in this very moment i'm king IN THIS VERY MOMENT I SLAY GOLIATH WITH THE SLING AND I WILL RETIRE WITH THE CROWN Nell could not put into words how happy she was that she'd obtained a phonograph. It had been something she'd wanted for a while, ever since moving to Canada actually. She never had the money back then, and in her spending spree when she was mad at her father it never occurred to her to find a way to play all the records she had a habit of collecting. Not until recently had she both had the money and the forethought to go and buy one. The money was especially a big concern. Her job paid well, but it wasn't anything astronomical. Her fiancé was rich, but she never mooched off of him or relied on his money. Especially in the beginning of the relationship when that would be a rather gold digger type move to make. Not that she was wise at relationships anyway.
The thought brought her usual smile to her face as she perused the shelves, sunglasses on her head. She wore a romper in the day's heat, not bothering to put a shirt underneath it. The garment didn't reveal much anyway, even though she usually wore a jacket with it. However, the heat was a bit too much in July. She was glad to have found time in her schedule to relax a little bit and actually enjoy the summer. Of course, she had a few papers to do over the expanse of time, but most of them were taken care of. She didn't enjoy putting things off. She shifted her weight to her right leg as her brown eyes scanned the lines on the back of the record, a few others cradled in her arm. Other than food, a lot of her money went toward music or buying things for her friends' birthdays. Her own was coming up soon, and she already had it in mind that she would be getting herself a present in the form of a tattoo. She added the record to her pile, and turned on her heel to see if there was anything else she wanted.
The familiar face stunned her for a moment, and she stopped as she wondered if she should approach. Lucy hadn't been too friendly when they met, and that was understandable. Her mother had just been arrested, and in a way it had been because of her. It certainly helped that Jane had come to Canada because of her and was arrested by Interpol. Not only that, but she could only guess at what Jane had told Lucy about her, if they even discussed her at all. In the end, she decided to approach the brunette and cheerily said, "Hey, Lucy, fancy seeing you here." Ugh, maybe she should have avoided that stupid cliche. Her awkwardness wasn't apparent, however, and she simply smile when she asked, "I suppose you're going to the Academy now, huh?" Nell could guess that the girl was a Water. It would have been very disappointing were she not. In any case, her powers showing up were most likely what brought her to Canada.

i'm okay, just go away into distance let me fade i'm okay, just go away i'm okay, but please don't stray too far Leaving home was quite possibly one of the hardest decisions Lucy Sinclair had ever made. Now, that might not be saying much, considering she was only fourteen, but even so, it was hard. She was born and raised in New York, had been leaving in the same penthouse apartment with her mother since birth, and now she was in a completely different country, living in the empty dormitories while school was out. Moving to Canada would have been inevitable for Lucy, even if her mother wasn't in jail. Now that her powers had shown their selves, she had no choice but to move to Maple Hollow and create a new life in the town.
Since finding out about them, Lucy's powers had intrigued her. She hated them, but at the same time, they fascinated her. She wanted to learn how to use them, to be powerful. But, her first day at the Academy had been disappointing. She would be learning nothing major until halfway through next year. In the meantime, Lucy had slacked off a bit in classes. "If only you'd tried harder..." was a phrase Lucy was accustomed to hearing from people over the years: her governesses, nannies, teachers... Hell, even her own mother would spout it from time to time. But the thing was, Lucy didn't want to try. She lacked the motivation. And so, she was an average student that was more content with dedicating her time pranks, parties and smoking than actually doing any work.
There was one aspect of her life that Lucy adored spending plenty of time on and that was her music. From an early age, Lucy had loved music, whether it was listening to it, or playing it herself on her piano, and then later on, her cello. Unfortunately, her cello and piano had stayed behind in the apartment in New York, but Lucy had tried to make up for not being able to play whatever she wanted, whenever she liked. She'd signed up for a couple of the music classes that the Academy had to offer, but it wasn't enough. Now it was summer, she had to go without her music, or find some way to be able to play in her home again. This was what had brought her to the music store.
Lucy had been perusing the keyboards for ages, after fawning over a beautiful piano for equally as long. As nice as it was, Lucy knew she wouldn't be able to get it home that night, which was exactly what she wanted. Now that she was surrounded by instruments, Lucy wanted to play right there. She pressed a few of the keys on the keyboard in front of her, a genuine smile spreading across her face as the notes hit her ears. Looking up, Lucy was curious to see if anyone was watching her. She was about to turn back to the keyboard and begin to play when a familiar face in the corner of her eye caught her attention. Smirking, Lucy turned back to the keyboard, playing random keys for no reason at all. She actually really liked it, and knew that she was going to buy it. It was rather lucky that money wasn't an issue. Lucy did have quite expensive tastes when it came to music...
"Hey, Lucy, fancy seeing you here." Lucy looked up at her cousin, immediately recognizing the voice with a small smile on her face. "Hello, Nell,"
Lucy said, turning back to the keyboard for a few seconds before her cousin spoke next. "Yeah, I am. she responded, almost too quick and sharp to invite further conversation. Honestly, Lucy couldn't believe herself sometimes. She had nothing against Nell, yet Lucy always found it hard with family. But, she was resolved to make an effort with Nell. Some small part of her wanted, no, needed to. "I'm a Water. Lucky me." With a wry grin, Lucy turned back to Nell. Lucy had always wondered why she was a Water, if Nell was an Earth. Lucy didn't even know where their Elemental genes came from. They were things she wanted to know, things she assumed Nell could tell her, but she remained quiet on the matter. "So," she started lamely, eyes never leaving Nell's face. "How's college?[/blockquote][/blockquote]

in this very moment i'm king IN THIS VERY MOMENT I SLAY GOLIATH WITH THE SLING AND I WILL RETIRE WITH THE CROWN Nell's eyes fell to the keyboard for a moment, smiling appreciatively. She had rudimentary knowledge on how to play, and she practiced as much as possible to get better. In her mind, she didn't have any talents, so she figured picking up an instrument could be something. Her eyes fell back on Lucy when the girl greeted her, and there was no coldness, for which she was glad. The unease flattened somewhat. And she guessed she didn't have to worry as much about her cousin. She's not like the others. But there was always the chance, just like Nell had, that she could break and give up and that would be that. But then the brusque reply had her defenses up again, eyebrow lifted as if she wasn't sure if she wanted to test the waters anymore. She's family, and she's still young. And she was not her mother, above all else. "Go figure," she said with an easy smile when Lucy went on. She didn't want this conversation to feel like egg shells, even though she felt like there was a lot she wanted to ask the girl. Do you write to your mother? What has she told you? Are you all right? Nell didn't know how Lucy was raised, but she couldn't believe that Jane was a good mother, even though that was a cruel assumption to make. She almost made comment on it, almost said, "I'm sure your mother is proud," but held her tongue. She didn't know, and those words might be bad ones.
Instead, she walked over to the keyboard, fingertips lightly tapping on the side. She felt Lucy's eyes on her, and turned her brown gaze back to her. Nell adjusted the vinyls in her arm, moving her hip a bit so they didn't jab as hard into it. "Oh, it's nice. A lot of freedom. Busy, even during the summer." She nodded to confirm this. Even though she didn't like to talk much about herself, she felt as if she needed to add something to show that she wasn't uncomfortable or anything, even though she didn't know what to make of the brunette girl. "I'm majoring in English and Literature. Minoring in Philosophy." Though she knew that she might take an extra interest in the latter, she wasn't too focused on what she wanted to pursue in her life. Unlike her fiance, she wasn't ambitious or driven. She didn't look toward the future. It was blank and big. "I'm surprised I haven't seen you around school yet." It wasn't too strange considering the sheer size, but Nell was glad the girl did turn out to be Water, even though there would have been little doubt with her blood. They wouldn't have to be enemies by default.
Nell inclined her head toward the keyboard and asked, "Can you play?" She could almost predict the answer, and not only because the girl had been playing some keys when she walked over. She came from a musical home, her mother had a godly talent, and it would be almost concerning had Lucy not inherited that or developed an interest of her own. "I would ask you if you were buying it, but I'm guessing you live in the dorms, right?" Most high school kids did, considering it was a boarding school and because...well, Lucy's mother was incarcerated. She felt a sympathy for her, but nothing in her demeanor or gaze said as much. She was trying to disconnect her relationship with Jane from her relationship with Lucy. Just because her mother hated her, didn't mean her daughter had to. "Uhm...are you doing anything today? Because I'd like to talk to you. And...catch up." Did Lucy have questions, she wondered? How much did she know about Jane and her 'business'. From shows she'd seen, she figured out that it wasn't like The Sopranos, that they didn't sit around the table and talk about whacking someone. She knew she shouldn't be as concerned about Lucy as she was considering they were pretty much strangers, but just as she was attempting a relationship with her father, she'd attempt one with her cousin. As long as Lucy wanted it, of course.
