”Where you goin’?” Altair looked at the Wind girl who was wriggling her torso around in an oversized black jacket that made her look like a huge, burnt marshmallow. Speaking of burnt, she let her blue eyes flick to the other kids lounging around the cliffs, possibly the coldest place to be in the Academy—but also one of the safest. The Fire girl only smoked bud on occasion, and so she normally didn’t associate herself with the potheads. However, she had nothing better to do, and weed was a good way to calm the nerves. Best part in her mind was that at least you couldn’t form an addiction to it, no matter what the burnouts liked to brag. People called it a gateway drug, and she almost smirked over that. She already had an addiction, she didn’t want to start another. Especially since there would always be the cravings, the pull, but she was strong in many ways. She’s handled it as well as possible.
The Fire girl brushed off her jacket absently and said, ”Detention.” She didn’t really feel like she owed an explanation to the girl with dilated pupils and a smile on her face, but she was in a good mood thanks to the pot. Anything could happen when she was feeling content, and it was easier to stay on her good side. ”Just blow it off, Al,” she told her, taking the joint in her fingers when a boy in a plaid shirt passed it to her. Altair snorted. ”And what, sit here with you jackwags? Don’t think so.” Detention sounded better to her than sitting around with these potheads because she had homework to do. She was proud, and now she had found another thing to be proud of—her grades. She was actually paying attention in class and handing in assignments. Not that she didn’t cause her fair share of trouble, she was simplymore dedicated to her schoolwork now.
When she entered the classroom and handed in her slip to the professor, he blinked in surprise, lowering the newspaper he’d been reading. ”You came,” he said with lifted eyebrows. ”On time.” She gave him a sneer. This guy barely even knew her, he just tended to do detentions whenever she had them. She was pretty sure that he didn’t notice that her eyes were a little bloodshot. She wasn’t high, but the relaxed feeling pot provided her with was nice. ”Don’t wet your pants,” she muttered as she walked to a seat, barely sparing Gabriella a glance as she passed by, placing her bag on the desk. She took out one of her notebooks but instead of working on the assignment, she began ripping bits of paper from the page. Since the professor was busy and she was seated behind the Water graduate, Altair felt that she was in a pretty good position. Taking out her Zippo lighter, she lit the minute flecks of paper and blew them in Gabriella’s direction. They crumbled and turned black before touching anything, however. Instead, they were merely a minor annoyance.
It would keep Altair occupied, at least, and she wondered if the girl would snitch to the professor. The smell of smoke would be apparent soon enough, but then again, Altair mostly smelled like smoke, especially after hanging out with the potheads. Of course, she had perfume on her and always like to keep herself smelling good. She continued to light the pieces of paper on fire before she said under her breath, ”How are you, Seong?” The teachers didn’t really care about talking, and the other students in the classroom couldn’t care about anything other than sleeping or listening to their iPods, but she stilll wanted to keep herself hushed. It was amazing, considering how much of a loudmouth the girl usually was. Still, she already had two weeks of detention—she didn’t want anymore. She had a life, a job, she had things to do that didn’t involve sitting in a classroom at the Academy, blowing flecks of burning paper at a Water elemental.

All of Gabriella's friends couldn't believe that she had gotten herself a detention. It is rare for Gabriella to be going to the detention hall. So she's not bothered by how shocked they are about her having a whole week of detention. "You got in a fight with a fire elemental? Sarah gasped as she put both her hands over her mouth. Not many of her friends know about her rivalry with Altair. She doesn't tell anyone about it, but it should be obvious the two of them are not actually fond of each other. One of her friends asked what happened while she was looking at four different syllabi to see what she needs to do to stay on track for her classes. The girl grabbed the books she needed, and put it into her bag. She tossed it on her shoulder as her friends continued to talk about her being in detention. "I'll be fine," The girl sighed as she interrupted their talk.
Gabi walked out of the dorms and into the detention. She was the first one, as expected. She gave the professor her slip, and he didn't say anything. Good, the girl didn't want to hear anymore about her being in detention. Gabriella took the seat that was towards the right of the room right behind the first chair. She took out her math book and started working on the assigned numbers the professor has given her. She started working on the problems but they were already causing her to be stuck. She erased furiously as she tried to find out what she did wrong. After a few minutes she moved on to another problem but it was just as hard.
The girl's attention was later averted to the person coming into the hall. She looked up to find the fire elemental she never got a long with. Gabriella went back to her work, but her pencil wasn't touching the paper. The girl was hoping that Altair would sit as far away from her as possible. Don't sit here, don't sit here. The girl thought as she looked at the pencil smeared paper, spotted with eraser dust. But she got a glimpse of Altair in front of her, and saw from her peripheral vision that she had sat down right behind Gabriella. The water elemental swallowed as she continued to work on her math problem. But something distracted her again. She smelled something, it smelled like something was burning. The girl moved her eyes behind her and saw that Altair was burning pieces of paper and blowing towards her.
Gabriella just ignored the little pieces of burning paper. Then she heard Altair ask how she's doing. Should she respond? She didn't want to show that her little trick is bothering her, so she replied without turning to face the high school-er. "I'm fine, thanks," The girl tried to say without a rude tone in her voice. Gabriella continued on with her math homework which she was having trouble with. I'll ask one of my friends later. Gabriella thought as she marked the problem and closed her book. She gently put it under her desk, and pulled out a book she needed to read for her history class.

Altair had to say, she was rather enjoying herself. She was a bitch, after all, even thouh she didn’t really describe herself as one. She only used labels when attacking someone else—they didn’t affect her. Call her what you wanted, and you’d get clocked in the face for approaching her, not for the words. She could care less what others thought about her, because she knew who she was and what she wanted. She knew that she was the best there ever was. Her ego was self-sustaining. After all, it was self-esteem. No one could affect how you felt about yourself. At least, that was how Altair viewed it. She always felt that way, even when she was a little girl. No one could touch her, not unless she let them. And she never let anyone touch her.
She wasn’t even bothered by the fact that Gab wouldn’t acknowledge her. Yep, the pot was sure helping in her mood. Of course, it would be gratifying to have her get pissed. ”Good, good,” Altair crooned, her finger coiling up a strand of her white-blond hair, formulating more ideas in her head to try and get under the girl’s skin. She wondered if the Water elemental would retaliate in the detention hall, or snitch. What else can they do, expell me? She smirked at the thought. She was still a high schooler, and elemental education was necessary—they couldn’t do that. And she believed that there was nothing else they could do anyway.
With a lazy grin, Altair reached out and tugged on Gabriella’s hair, gently though as if she were only playing with her. ”You have such nice hair,” she said under her breath as she rubbed the strands under her fingertips. She at least wasn’t lying about that—the dark strands were soft in her touch. Not for long if she was going to carry out what she wanted to. ”Do you straighten it? I mean, I could do it for you. I am a Fire, after all.” It was clear what her words intoned, that she wouldn’t be straightening it but incinerating it.

Gabriella looked through her bag for a pencil to annotate the book she was reading. She started underlining some sentences that seemed important, and also added some comments on the margins. The girl even circled some words that weren't familiar to her. She was doing all of this for her benefit, so it will be easier for her to use for an essay, and to keep her attention on something else besides Altair. The girl did decide to make this time her studying time, because she couldn't fit it anywhere else. Detention was never Gabi's thing, she hasn't even told her mother yet. She doesn't plan to, either. Gabi believes that her mother has never heard of college students being in detention. Most of her high school friends don't even know about her being an elemental, they just knew that her mother wanted to transfer her to a better school, even though it is quite far.
Gabriella rolled her eyes when she heard Altair's reply, and continued on reading, trying her best to ignore her. It's like she can't tolerate her being the same room as her, but now she's sitting right in front of the the fire elemental, that will do anything to provoke something. Gabi, calm down, just pretend she isn't even here. The girl told herself, as she closed her eyes, and took a deep breath to calm herself down. The girl turned back to her book and continued to underline whatever was important and writing comments when she felt it was necessary. She let out a small sigh when she felt Altair tug on her hair. Her comment threw her off a bit, but the tone in her voice just brought back the hatred she had for this fire elemental. Then her other comment caused her to put her book down, and move her hair over her left shoulder.
"Thanks, and no I don't like to damage my hair," Gabriella said gathering her hair into a side ponytail. She would know if Altair tried to touch her hair, and probably burn it again. Gabriella takes good care of her hair, she even has a great ceramic straightener to make her hair wavy, but she also has a heat protectant spray just in case. The only chemicals that she would allow on her hair are shampoo and conditioner, and heat protectant spray. Those are the only things that she puts in her hair. She has never dyed her hair, and doesn't plan on it. She likes her hair color just the way it is.

Jeez, this girl was boring. Altair studied a lot more than she used to, but still…it was hard to imagine doing so all the time. She wasn’t smart, even though the girl wouldn’t admit that—she had a lot of pride in herself and would never admit a weakness like that. She didn’t like reading, she didn’t like books, but she was at least clever enough when it came to street smarts. But that wouldn’t really help her in the Academy, so she’d learned to adjust as well as possible. She never really liked the idea of assimilating in anyway—another secret was that she feared losing her accent and becoming one of these people—and so she merely took her time in doing what was considered the right thing. Smoking pot with a bunch of burn outs wasn’t really the right thing, but it wasn’t uncommon. Everyone smoked pot. Adults did it, maybe even her parents experimented before, she was sure even a few professors did. It was actually better than her cigarettes.
The Fire girl let out a small sigh as Gab pulled her hair away. ”You’re no fun,” she said, her lips set in a pout. It was amazing, how different her demeanor could be at different times. It depended on what she wanted from someone. She could be flirty and nice with clients, she could be intimidating to her opponents, and she could be mellow and joking with her friends and her sister. It never really went much deeper than that however—no one got compassion from her, no one got any love or sadness or hope. No one except for Rowena. She remembered the night that had changed everything, the night Ro had called her and her words destroyed her world. They’d lost something so important to them that everything seemed to snap back to clarity, even though Altair spent her time throwing things and flushing her pills down the toilet. The other half was comforting her sister and telling the girl that they were going to pull it together, that they weren’t going to lose each other. Altair wouldn’t let that happen. No one else saw that kind of decency from her.
Altair stroked her fingers through her hair as if considering, the white blond locks silky in her hands. She wondered what she would look like if she dyed it, but she didn’t ever do such a thing—she was perfect the way she was, so why would she change her hair color? ”Whatcha working on?” The Fire girl asked as she crossed her arms on the desk and peered over the other girls shoulder, leaning in uncomfortably closed. She liked making people she hated uncomfortable. It was a talent of hers, really.

Can this girl be any more annoying? Gabriella asked herself as she continued to read and annotate her book. She's doing her best to ignore the girl behind her, who is constantly always trying to get the worst out of Gabriella. She doesn't want Altair to have the satisfaction of doing that, so she must resist replying with a sharp tongue. She continued to think about this while reading the material, but she realized that distraction in the back of her head was not helping her concentrate on what she needed to read. But she continued to read anyways, even mouthing the words as she went. If she needed to read out loud she usually does that in a study group or whenever she's by herself. Gabriella bookmarked her page and took out her water bottle and took a swig, before continuing with the book.
Gabi didn't even say anything when Altair mentioned how she's not "fun". Gabriella considers herself to be a fun person, but Altair's definition of fun was completely different from her's. She knows this because of the way Altair takes joy in other people's anger, and annoyance with the fire elemental. She was going to snap back, but she didn't. She can't give her that satisfaction, she will not. Why give it to her right after their little battle by the lake? Hasn't she had enough fights with her? Gabriella took in a deep breath as she tried to immerse herself in the book she was assigned to read. She needs to stay on track or else she'll fall behind, like the people who sit in back of the class.
But one thing that made her eyes freeze was when Altair leaned forward over her shoulder. She saw the girl's blonde hair from her peripheral vision. She decided to just show the girl the cover of her book. But before she did that she took her bookmark and put it where she marked her spot. Gabriella closed the book and showed the cover to Altair. The girl was wondering if Altair would snatch it right out of her hands to get a closer look, if she did, Gabi wasn't sure on how to respond to that. Was she supposed to try to get her book back? Or let her have it? If Gabi let her hold on to the book she will most likely burn it. She can't let her do that, no that can't happen.

Altair always thought it was a shame when she couldn’t draw out the kind of reactions she wanted from people. Well, that wasn’t completely true. Sometimes she enjoyed the unexpected. It depended on what the unexpected was. The disappointing part was when the unexpected turned out to be boring. Such as now. You have homework, she thought, but she just shrugged it off. She always ended up getting it done, whether it was in the class before or actually at the apartment. Sometimes even in the club when she was waiting for her shift. As she continued to observe the dark head of hair in front of her, she realized that it really was simply a matter of time before the other girl cracked. Gabriella couldn’t stay resilient for long. Atair kept her chin propped up, tapping her french manicured nails on the desk. Even looking so unamused, she still kept her poise, back straight, legs gingerly crossed at the ankles, balls of her feet gently touching the ground. It was in the way that she never let her guard down, even when it came to her appearances.
She got a little satisfaction from the fact the Water graduate showed her the book. ”Hmm?” She lifted a fine eyebrow. Altair did in fact slip the book, stroking her fingers down the cover before opening. She leaned back in her chair, opening it and taking out the bookmark. ”So many notes…Miss Smarty Pants, huh.” The comment did not sound at all bitter or goading, unnatural for Altair. The buzz did wonders for her really. ”Doing this for class?” She ran her fingers down the page she had flipped it open to, her eyes flicking up to the professor, who was still distraacted by whatever was written in today’s paper. Guiding her eyes back down, she started to slowly rip the page out, the sound garnering one or two students’ attention before they decided that it was ultimately uninteresting and turned back around. ”Be a shame to lose it…” The rest of her words were lost on a yawn as protected her mouth from view with her hand. Always dignified. ”Oh me oh my, I’m getting tired even looking at this.”

She felt her book slip from her hands. She turned around to face Altair. When Altair took out her bookmark, she clenched her fist which was lying still at her side. She can't hit her now, and she lacks the strength to keep Altair from pouncing on her anyways. Instead of playing her games, Gabriella decided to play nice to cool the fire. "Thank you, it's the best way to be an active reader." Gabriella said with a smile. It wasn't her best one, but at least it was a smile. She needs to cool down the fire that's building inside of her. The water elemental had to admit that Altair had a way of annoying her. "Yeah, can I have it back now?" The girl replied to the fire elemental's question. Gabriella extended her hand towards Altair so she can give her back the book. But that didn't happen.
The sound of the page ripping irked her a bit more, but she tried her best not to show it. "Yes, it would be, now may I have it back." Gabriella emphasized the last four words. She did not want any more damage on her book. The girl did take notes in a binder. She made sure that binder was always in her room because they were "carbon copies" of her notes. "Good, then hand it over." Gabriella said, keeping her extended hand, waiting for the book to be returned to her. She needs to finish that chapter. The girl was not going to turn her back on the fire elemental who still had her book that was annotated for class and for her own benefit.
The graduate needed that book to as proof for her history teacher that she read the book, and that she annotated it like the her professor instructed. She can't let her burn it, if that's what she's trying to do.

Altair snorted rather loudly when Gab said that she liked to be an ‘active reader’, clamping a hand over her mouth as she continued to laugh. It stirred a few people’s interest, but once they realized who it was, they turned away in disinterest. She had been rather disruptive today, so it wasn’t new behavior on her part. ”Oh well, good for you,” The Fire elemental said as if she were a teacher speaking to a very young student. The comment had amused her greatly, probably wouldn’t have if she wasn’t in the rather…odd mood she currently found herself in. She lifted her eyebrow. Since it was clear that Gab wanted it back…Altair didn’t think she was going to oblige her. If she had expressed disinterest, the Fire might have been willing to relinquish possession. But she didn’t think she would right now. ”You asked so nicely,” she said, like she was greatly pleased by this. ”But…I think I’ll hold onto it, kay.”
Altair tilted her head as if she hadn’t exactly heard the girl. Then, she tilted it in the other direction, going back and forth. ”Now we’re getting impatient,” Altair scolded, enjoying this. Some entertainment in the otherwise boring detention hall. She was glad that she decided to sit behind the Water graduate. Especially since the teacher meant she couldn’t fight her. It also meant that Altair couldn’t fight, but she’d deal with that. She held it out of reach of Gab, laughing meanly, and quieting herself when the professor looked over, acting like they were merely having a friendly conversation. Talking wasn’t really against the rules, but it was greatly discouraged. At least it was better than fighting in their eyes. ”What would you be willing to do for it?” Altair asked, quirking an eyebrow at her adversary. ”I mean, if I don’t get anything out of it, I don’t see the point…” It was clear that she was toying with Gabriella. The book was important to her, for her class, and Atair was glad for that. It meant leverage.

Gabriella did not want to reply to that comment, especially the way she snorted on how she likes to be an active reader. She's been marking her books ever since she was introduced to it during her high school years in the Academy. Altair may find it ridiculous but who cares, as long as she is getting the best from her education, she's happy with taking the time to annotate her books. When Altair didn't give back her book, Gabi bit the inside of her lip. She's trying to control the urge to grab it back. She doesn't want to embarrass herself, and cause a high school-er to humiliate her even further. This room had a few other students in here, and she did not want to cause any trouble. Even the professor or teacher is preoccupied with the newspaper.
She didn't care if she was getting impatient. She needed her book back. Gabriella needs to read up to chapter ten for tomorrow, and she has time now, so she needs to use this time wisely, but someone is in her way. She tried to calm herself down but her emotions won't let her. But one thing did shock her, it shouldn't even come as a shock. Altair would ask her something like that. "What?" Gabriella asked as if she didn't hear Altair. She heard her, she just couldn't believe she was asking such a question. If Altair is planning to do something to embarrass her, she is not going to give in to her little game. She can't. "I am not your entertainment." Gabriella said through gritted teeth. "So, give me the book." She said extending her hand out for the last time.

Altair’s grin was enigmatic and malicious all at once. Gabriella really was just encouraging her with the attention, and the Fire girl was going to milk it for all it was worth. What else was there to do? Fold paper planes like a fourth grader? Spit balls? She had an iPod, her cellphone, but that got old quick. And she’d found a much more entertaining way to kill time in detention. It was rare that she even got the opportunity, so she usually resorted to actually doing her homework. She had to wonder why such a thing was even invented? It seemed so very droll, even for the teachers who proctored them. It was a lose-lose situation.
She lifted a fine eyebrow. ”You heard me, sweetheart,” she told Gabriella, and they both know she had. Her lips formed a pout which could have been considered adorable on anyone else. On her face, it was just another expression of mockery and foul intent. ”Oh, but you’re so good at it,” she teased, noticing that the girl was getting aggravated. Well good. That’s just how Altair liked it. A little bite, a little fighting back. It was no fun for her anymore to fuck with someone who couldn’t even stand up for themselves verbally. That felt more like abuse than anything. In another mocking gesture, she gave Gabriella a high five when the Water graduate held out her hand again. ”Well then, it looks like I’ll have to hold onto it.” It was juvenile, but Altair didn’t care. She wanted to have her fun. ”You’re really bad at this whole bullying thing, you know that? Why don’t you snitch on me?” That would certainly spice it up, even though they were already in detention.

I'm good at being her entertainment? Gabi thought to herself. She wasn't sure how she had entertained this Fire elemental who was still in high school. But she shouldn't be thinking about that, she needs to find a way to get her book back, without damaging it. She is not going to please Altair in anyway, she can't. But she is probably giving her what she wants right now. If only she was a wind elemental, she can carry her book over with air, instead of water. So what if she was bad with the bullying thing? She has been bullied before but her brother was always there for her. Now, she just can't believe that she's in detention and she's an adult, and a high school-er is her worst enemy. Sometimes the graduate wish she never had this ability.
"So what? Why does it matter to you?" Gabriella asked Altair after she gave her hand a high five. The girl pulled her hand back, and kept it on her lap. Gabi has never been the bully, she didn't really hurt anyone, except for Altair. Well all she really did was soak her from head to toe. And she drained her own energy. Gabriella was the one who was physically punched twice, and she slightly sprained her ankle. Gabi doubts that she even bruised Altair's ego. She's not sure if she wants to turn into one, even if it is her enemy. That means she'll be stooping to Altair's level.

Altair did get bored pretty easily, but that was because she always had to be doing something. She was never content with just sitting around, even when she gave that impression sleeping in class. That was due to scheduling conflicts. If she had enough energy to stay awake, she could barely stay awake in the class, and had to occupy herself otherwise. Which was why a lot of the time one knew if Altair Bennett had class in a room because of the smell of nail polish. "Because you matter to me, love," she said dramatically, holding a hand over her chest. It may have been the type of ball-breaking interaction between two friends if Altair wasn't so cruel.
The Fire girl ran her tongue over her teeth. "I told you, you're my entertainment," she said. "Don't get me wrong, I couldn't give less of a fuck about you. But really, you could just tell a teacher." Altair shrugged. It wouldn't make a difference to her. Maybe Gabriella was aware of this and that was why she didn't go running to the professor that the Fire bitch was tormenting her. The girl was book smart, maybe there was some street smarts in that pretty little head as well. "Whatever, don't tell me, I don't care," she said with a wave of her manicured hand, the other still holding the page of a book. "Still not giving this thing back. Or maybe I will. We'll see." She didn't smile, her expression simply placid and not giving anything away.
