"You play tennis, Dale?"
The tone of the other boy was doubtful, the Earth crossing his arms as he watched Joshua tightening the laces on his boots before straightening, racket in hand. "Yeah," replied Joshua casually, as if this was something he talked about every day. In reality he rarely played tennis on the grounds as he didn't usually have his equipment with him. "So?" Hefting the bag of extra rackets and balls onto his shoulder, he jerked his head toward the door and started outside. It had rained the day before and washed away almost all of the snow. It left the ground soaked but the lack of frigid winter was a fact that most people were taking full advantage of—Joshua and his current companion included. "It'll be fun," he said, pitching his 'sale' of sorts to the boy. "A little sport never hurt anyway, right?" His friend still did not appear convinced as he paused for a moment and surveyed the soaking, muddy ground. A Water elemental was looking mortified as she traipsed back to the Academy, one side absolutely soaked in mud. "I slipped," she mumbled when the pair looked at her inquiringly.
The Earth elemental seemed to take this as backing support as he turned to Joshua, raising an eyebrow. "That could be us," he said. "Wouldn't want to get your nice white shirt all mucked up, would you?" Joshua was not to be so easily beat, smirking at the other. "You're forgetting something," he said importantly. A single wave of his hand caused a ripple in the air—it was immediately apparent by the abrupt temperature spike that he had heated the ground and dried up their muddy little problem in a small portion of the grounds, just large enough for a tennis match. His companion, Nicky, looked stumped. "We don't have a net?" It was said as a question and obviously as a last ditch effort to avoid agreeing to this, but it was only half-hearted. Before Joshua could even reply to offer a back-out if he really didn't want to hang out, Nicky waved a hand and gestured to the bag. "Alright, alright, I'll play you for a match or two. Hand me a racket." Joshua unzipped the bag and tossed him one of the spares, also taking out a tube of fresh tennis balls and extracting one. "Heads up!" he said, volleying the ball toward the other boy before he could realise what was happening.
As predicted, it soared over Nick's head and landed somewhere beyond. "Hey!" the other boy called across their makeshift 'court'. "Not fair!" Joshua's gray eyes were devious as he grinned back at him. Obviously in a good mood, the Fire graduate smoothly replied, "It's like they say, 'all's fair in love and war'—and love is exactly what you have right now." He winked and hit the second ball toward his friend, who didn't really seemed bothered by Joshua's unfair start to the match as he stepped easily to the side and hit it back. The Fire graduate was the better player between them if he were to make this into a competition but his serves were kept light and easy to return. He wanted outside for some air and for something to do, not to show off his skill in the only sport he could actually play. Sometimes he thought about trying volleyball as it, too, was not always a team sport, but he had never actually acted on the thought. He'd grown up with tennis, however, having a court in his own backyard and often paying visits with his parents to the country club, which had several.
After a little while, Nicky's phone rang and cut their current match short. Joshua took advantage of the pause to pull out a bottle of water from his bag and take a long swig, turning back to see the Earth elemental pocketing his phone with an apologetic expression. "That was Jay on the phone," he said and looked as if he were about to add something else to back this up. Joshua stopped him by raising a hand. "That's the girlfriend, eh?" Nicky nodded and Josh grinned. "Don't worry about it, man, you better go see what she wants. Tell her I said bonjour." He nudged his friend on the arm with a wicked grin. Jaime was French and as Joshua spoke it and Nicky did not, the two often came together to pull his leg. "Nice try, man, I know that one now. Au revoir, asshole." He was grinning when he left and so it did not offend Joshua. Unfortunately he was now left alone. He sighed, smiled to himself, then took a blind shot in the direction of the Academy. Unfortunately, he underestimated the power behind his serve and instead of falling short as intended, it crashed into the building... via window. He winced and ducked his head. Shit. I wonder if anyone saw that...?

Gabriella was enjoying some quality time with her friends. Sure it was still freezing cold outside but everyone needs some fresh air once in a while, even Gabriella knew she needed some fresh air, and she loved to socialize whenever she found the time to, so today was the day. The girl did get some studying done, and did more than she thought she was able to do. She even had some math homework done, which she thought she was never able to finish until night fall. Lucky for her she had some pretty smart friends who can understand those math terms. The girl never loved math, and she never will, unless she has a great professor who teaches it so that it can be fun, if math is ever fun, and that she can understand what the professor is saying. Lucky for Gabriella that this year is her last year taking math. After statistics, she is done!
The girls and Gabi were walking around the grounds, they couldn't find a dry spot at that all of them can sit on, and no one in their little group right now is a fire elemental. The girl is only hoping that none of her friends are too friendly to a fire elemental, because friendships formed outside of an alliance is quite dangerous and rare. Who wants to get in trouble for being friends with a fire, or a thunder? It isn't a crime to be friends with those people, but with the war going on, it sure is. One of the girls stopped the group and Gabriella looked in her direction to find two boys playing tennis, without a net. Gabi and her friends were a bit far for them to distinguish who was playing tennis.
The girl just thought it was strange how they were playing without a net. Gabriella remembers the net's height at the center is right at her hip. The girl wanted to watch from where they were standing but her friends were dragging her to a dry spot that they found. So they started walking there, and Gabriella heard something whiz past them above their heads. Gabriella looked up to find a light green streak, and she knew it was a tennis ball. All of them watched as it hit a window of the academy. The girl went to see where the tennis ball landed and saw that it wasn't too far from the window. The person was probably going to miss the tennis ball that is in a classroom. The girl ran into the academy and grabbed the tennis ball. Lucky for her that the classroom was empty.
Gabriella was jogging her way towards the dried ground, and wondered why it was so dry. As she drew closer she saw that the person who was playing was Josh. She cannot stand this boy at all, but she doesn't really hate him. He's different from the other fire elementals. He hasn't started anything with her, and she didn't do anything for him to hate her. "Hey, thought you might want this back," The girl said extending the hand that held the tennis ball. "So, you play tennis, too?" The girl asked. She had no idea that Josh played tennis, he didn't seem like the type who would.

As he was not very submissive or easily intimidated, Joshua did not wince as someone approached to hand him back the ball. If she'd been a professor or otherwise bitched at him for breaking the window, he might even have been a little cocky. It all depended on how people approached Joshua, really. As he recognised Gabriella, he arched a dark eyebrow at her and waited to see what she would say. He was not entirely sure what he thought of the Water girl—he did not like her, but nor could he claim hatred. Despite his sour moods and general distrust of people, Josh didn't hate a whole lot of the population. Hate really was a strong word, one he reserved for the real assholes in his life like Patrick, or people like Jane and Nell's grandparents that wanted her to be put in jail. Gabriella was merely someone with whom he did not get along. "Thank you," he said as he accepted the ball from her, using manners despite their differences. He would not be unpleasant toward her until she said something that put him off. Though difficult to deal with, Josh wasn't impossible. He could be civil if the situation called for it. We're aligned with the same side, I may as well be cordial.
He dipped his head slightly in agreement. "I do." He supposed people were taken aback by this because he didn't really show any other sort of interest in sports. Maybe they assumed he was all bookworm with no room left for even the slightest bit of athletic talent. It didn't really bother Joshua himself. It was somewhat of a stereotype between the rich and tennis but as he didn't share knowledge of his wealth with a lot of people anyway, this was something that only a few people made a connection to. Blinking, he surveyed her through a curious gray gaze. "'Too', you said," he remarked, pointing out the obvious in order to lead into his next question. "I'm assuming that means you play as well?" Not that it would have surprised him if she did—plenty of people played tennis and he didn't know Gabriella well enough to make too many judgements. All he knew from what little time they'd spent together was that her opinionated nature sometimes grated on his nerves. As someone who wasn't very argumentative himself, it could be irritating when someone else did not share this trait.
Giving her appearance a quick once-over, Joshua could not see any sort of scrapes or cuts to suggest that she had been in the classroom when the window had shattered. Still, it was possible that she had just evaded the glassy shrapnel and so he inquired, "Did it almost get you, or something? How did you notice it?" He held up the tennis ball slightly to indicate what he was talking about. He wouldn't have felt too guilty if it had caused her injury (as long as it wasn't serious) but he might have been nice enough to offer help. He didn't realise that she'd been outside the same as he was seeing as Joshua had been preoccupied with his friend and their tennis match. He hadn't glanced around the yard seeking to identify its other occupants. Though it was not to his knowledge, the classroom that he'd accidentally damaged with his rough shot was disused and so there had been no real risk to anything other than the property itself. "Mind not mentioning this to the administration?" He was not begging or pleading—if she insisted that she would rat him out, he'd likely just glower for a moment and then depart the situation before it turned into a fight. He didn't beg. He did, however, wonder whether or not she'd be the type to 'turn him in', per say.

Gabriella gave him a small smile as Josh thanked her for returning the familiar fuzzy tennis ball that has been in her life for about nine years now. She can't believe that it has been that long since the last time her father taught her how to play tennis. She misses him a lot, so whenever she plays tennis, she can't help but think of him and his advice on her backhand. She was never really good at that. It always felt weird, and out of place to her. "You're welcome," Gabriella said judging from the distance of where they were, and the academy. Wow, he must have been playing longer than she has. Gabi did stop playing tennis for a while because of her dad's early passing. But her mom urged her to play when she turned thirteen, so technically she has been playing tennis for about six years.
The girl rubbed her hands, just to keep them busy. She isn't fond of Josh, not at all. But there is something that makes him different from the rest of the fire elementals that are in the academy, and out in the world. Gabriella can't find any reason for her to hate him. She doesn't even know much about him in order to. She would be friends with him but, the alliance is making it quite hard for her, and maybe for the rest of the elements as well. "Yeah, I have been playing for a while." A while wasn't the whole truth, she should have said years, but he doesn't need to know about her life, and how her dad died when she was ten. Nell, doesn't even know that, so why tell someone whom she doesn't trust? Sure he seems like a nice guy, but you never know, Just thinking about how she first started made her want to tear up, but she can't, not now, and not today. It isn't even close to the anniversary of his death. She knew she was going to miss him, but she didn't expect to miss him this much.
When Josh asked if she wouldn't mind not telling them about him breaking a window, she wasn't sure what to say. She usually isn't the type to rat someone out, even if the culprit is her enemy. "Don't worry, your secret's safe with me," Gabriella said raising her right hand to show that she means it. But she put it down, when she knew that the administration will want to find out what happened to the window. Today wasn't that windy, and there aren't any signs of a storm coming. "But they will want to know who or what caused the window to break," The girl added. Josh was lucky that the classroom was empty, someone could have been hit in the head with that tennis ball going a billion miles per hour. Josh must have served that ball hard if he it reached that window, and managed to shatter it. Gabi can't even serve or hit that far for that matter. The difference between the two is that he is one year older, a boy, and taller, which makes him naturally stronger than she is.

Joshua shrugged at the words, not seeming bothered. "So? I'm certainly not going to tell them." He was completely alright with sliding under the radar and not getting into trouble for the property damage. It wasn't that he couldn't pay for the cost of repairs—his family were rich, it was pennies—he just didn't want something like that being written up. They might even give him detention for it and he had already landed himself in detention once this month. He was not keen on doing so again. He figured that they might look into it very briefly but as there was no real way to find out who'd been witness to the incident and who had caused it unless they discovered it in a short window of time, he wasn't too worried about the consequences. As far as he knew, Gabriella was the only one that had noticed. Besides, it was like she'd implied—it was not always an assumed fact that Josh knew how to play tennis at all. It's not like I did it on purpose. He liked the Academy and despite being a little standoffish and sour toward its occupants he had no ill will toward the place itself. He didn't get a rise out of lighting fire to things or breaking windows, didn't see the fun in using graffiti to mark up the walls. Maybe some people were into that kind of petty rebellion but he wasn't one of them.
Though aware that they were not on the best of terms, Joshua did not dislike Gabriella enough for it to be a tense situation. It wasn't awkward for him, either, perhaps because he was confident in himself. The Water elemental had approached him and he certainly wasn't ashamed of his actions so he had no reason to sense anything off about the situation. Sure, it had gone a little quiet since he'd let the subject drop but that wasn't something that bugged him—he was a quiet fellow, keeping mostly to himself. Still, it was not his intention to stand here revelling in the silence whilst Gabby did the same and so he asked, "Is that all?" It was not said in a rude manner, merely a questioning one. He didn't know if she'd came over here for any other reason. He assumed not, of course, considering she'd approached with the tennis ball in her hand and held it out to him but it was just safe to check. Once upon a time he would have just walked off wordlessly but he was growing more accustomed to treating the people in his alliance with manners, if not genuine kindness. He wasn't very good at being honestly kind to others, so a sense of cordial tolerance was good enough.
Looking at the cloudy sky for a moment, Joshua frowned. He did enjoy the rain and didn't mind being out in it but he wasn't much in the mood for being outside if it started pouring down in sheets. He had things to be doing later on in the day and it would not do to be sloshing around and dripping water. Of course, he could always just use his powers to avoid the problem entirely but at this point it would have been a pointless waste of energy. "I'd better head inside. It's going to storm and I'd rather not be caught in it." Again, he could have departed without an explanation but figured that he'd give her one so that she didn't think he was being a jerk. He started toward the Academy slowly, in no rush to get where he was going. His long legs carried him at a reasonable pace even if he wasn't in a hurry and so he didn't need to watch his pacing.
[Gabby can walk with him and continue conversation if you want, he's just not very talkative atm o.o]

The girl tilted her head to the side. Shouldn't he take responsibility for his actions? Surely Gabi is not going to take the blame for it. The girl isn't sure if there are camera's installed in this old castle. Gabriella cannot lie, no matter how hard she tries, people manage to get the truth out of her. Gabriella wasn't sure on how to reply to that. She even told Josh that she would make sure to keep his secret safe. She would be contradicting herself if she said anything about taking responsibility for one's actions. The girl looked at the floor and let the silence fill in between the "acquaintances". Gabriella isn't sure on how to describe their relationship. Josh doesn't hate her, and she doesn't hate him, and they aren't really friends.
The girl was pulled out of her thoughts, and she looked up at the older college student. "Uh, yeah," The girl said giving him a smile in response. Gabriella wasn't sure why she was staying where she is, when her friends are waiting for her on the other side of the courtyard. The girl looked towards the academy and found that they went back inside. Whatever. I'll catch up to them later. Gabriella thought to herself. Hopefully her friends haven't ditched her to finish talking to Josh. Don't they know that she doesn't really have a friendship with him? Gabi is sure that her friends know that Mr. Josh Dale is a fire elemental. Maybe her friends don't know her that well. The girl let out a sigh, her friends always found a way to leave her alone with some guy, even if he is a fire elemental.
The silence between them started to make feel Gabriella a bit uncomfortable. She turned her attention back to the fire elemental and saw that he was looking up at the sky. She furrowed her brows and also looked up at the sky. She found dark skies had replaced the nice white and blue sky earlier. The reason that she came out was because it wasn't going to snow or rain, but it seems like it is going to rain or snow. Gabi's eyes returned to Josh when he mentioned the storm coming. "Um, is it okay if I walk with you? My friends walked back before me," Gabi explained when Josh turned around to walk towards the academy. He was already a few feet away from her.

Joshua was slightly surprised by her request to walk with him seeing as they'd never really been what you could call friendly, but as he had no real issues with her he shrugged a little and dipped his head once to show agreement. "If you want." He didn't pretend to own the grounds and so even if he'd refused she could have tagged along behind him or walked ahead. However, Josh had enough common sense to understand that she likely meant walk and talk with him while doing so, else she wouldn't have had to ask to begin with. He wondered why her friends had gone on without her but it wasn't his place to ask questions like that. If she'd been a friend he might have made the inquiry but he was a lot more cautious around strangers. Could Gabriella tell that he was not someone who talked a whole lot? It certainly wasn't hard to pick up on—a few minutes in his company would tell you a whole lot about his talkativeness (or lack thereof). He generally found it easy to strike up and maintain a conversation if he'd known someone for a while but he was also a lot less wary of silences between his closer friends. He trusted them to know that he never saw a silence as 'awkward' and thus they should feel the same.
Still, he wasn't going to head all the way back inside as a silent shadow of the Water elemental. There would have been no point to agreeing to walk with her if he was going to remain tight-lipped and stoic the entire time. He was a man of few words but he was hardly what you could call shy. "You never answered my question earlier," Joshua said after a pause. He'd not been particularly offended and did not sound it. It took certain things to cause offence in Joshua and they generally involved his close friends and loved ones, the rare few insults against his person being enough. He figured she'd just not heard him or had been focusing on something else he'd said and let it slip her mind. "How'd you find the ball?" He still wondered whether she'd been in the classroom when it had struck or whether she'd just chanced across it. The latter seemed less likely to him but as his offence had not drew an entire classroom full of people outside or to the broken window and the source of its damage, he really wasn't sure either way. It was why he'd asked in the first place and also why he broached the subject again.
Having paused in his stride to allow Gabriella to catch up and walk with him as she'd requested, Joshua now started back toward the Academy once more. The long, low rumble of thunder broke the temporary silence but there was not yet any rain to join it in chorus. He figured that the clouds would rupture and soak them to the skin quite soon, however. He did not speed his pace because he already had longer legs and thus a longer stride than Gabby—they were both graduates more than capable of fending off a bit of rain for a short while. She could just bend it to her will so that it didn't touch her and Joshua's heat would be more than enough to fry a couple droplets. "At least it's not going to snow," he remarked. The comment was half to himself as the first light rain started to drizzle from the heavens. He didn't hate the cold and snow as much as some, he just didn't like what it did to his powers. Besides, he preferred the rain. He'd been born in the spring and it was his favourite season so he embraced the 'April showers' that inevitably came with it. He'd experienced rain on his birthday a few times but had no complaints about it. He liked the summer, too—there weren't many Fire elementals that didn't. Autumn had nice landscape and winter... well, it was dead and cold. He didn't hate it but it was his least favourite of them all.

Gabriella started question why she even requested such a thing. She knows that she can walk back to the academy by herself, she did not need an escort. The girl felt a smile tug on her lips when Josh responded. "Thanks," Gabriella replied as she had to jog a bit to stand a few feet next to him. Sometimes the girl wonders why she is so short, but there are girls who are shorter than her out there, so she should appreciate her stature. Of course sometimes it's hard for her to catch up when she's walking with people who are at least a foot taller than her. She will just have to make due with what she was given. Josh is a guy, so it makes sense for him to be tall. Sometimes Gabi wondered what it would be like if her brother was younger. There would be so many pictures of her being taller than him instead of him being taller than her. That would be nice to see.
"Oh, sorry about that," The girl said with a nervous laugh. She remembered hearing it but forgot to reply to his question. She doesn't know why she didn't answer him earlier. "It flew above my friends and me," The girl said thinking back to see how fast the ball was flying. "I saw which window it crashed into, so I went into the classroom and grabbed it." Gabriella finished her little story. It seemed like that's what she usually does, she tells the person a little story of what happened. None of her friends have ever mentioned that to her, but then again they aren't really that close to her. The reason that they hang out so much is to get to know one another.
Gabriella didn't even realize that she fell behind. She only noticed when Josh stopped for her to catch up. The girl took a few big steps to catch up. The girl didn't think he was walking fast, but his long legs was helping him cover more distance than she can. Gabi nearly froze when she heard the thunder. The girl always hated thunder, she never liked how loud it can be. According to Gabi's parents, she used to cry whenever there was a thunder storm. What kind of infant wouldn't cry when there's a thunder storm going on? Well maybe a brave infant, but still thunder storms are quite scary. "Yeah," The girl replied to Josh's comment about how it's not going to snow. At least she can manipulate the water to land somewhere else besides her, but she's not going to waste it on a drizzle that started not long after the thunder.

He waved a hand as she apologised to dismiss it as nothing, insisting without words that he didn't really mind. Despite being difficult to deal with in terms of his anger issues and his near-inability to open up to other people, Josh could be remarkably easy going about the little things. Some assumed that all Fire elementals would blow a gasket and punch them if they so much as caused a minor irritation but as he was Fire himself, Josh knew that the lines were finer and the conditions more complicated than that. It was hard to tell (beyond the obvious, like attacking his family or his girlfriend) what would provoke Josh at times. He had gotten angry at a close friend for a comment she hadn't even meant in the way he'd taken it, he'd gotten angry at Nell because she wasn't self-confident enough, for goodness sakes. But he was not angry at Gabriella and thus had no reason to act as such. It wasn't like she'd ignored him out of spite or rudeness—at least, he didn't think she had. He supposed he could have been wrong but he wasn't going to dwell on it for too long.
From the sounds of it, she had just been out with her friends and had chanced upon noticing where it had went, thus dismissing his concerns about a classroom full of people bearing witness to the accidental crime. He was a little less concerned about possible injuries considering he was sure he'd be in trouble by now if anyone had been hurt but he still asked, "I take it you're alright? None of the glass got you?" His tone sounded more business-like than concerned. He didn't really have a high level of empathy for people he didn't know well. It was increasing over the years to where he did feel a little badly for someone if they were hurt but he didn't usually go out of his way unless they were a friend. It was just a part of his personality. He worried sometimes about becoming a doctor with this lack of constant compassion but trusted in himself enough that he could build it over time. Besides, it was different if someone came to him for assistance. He did what he could when it was asked of him, he'd just rather avoid sticky situations where possible. He had a strong sense of self-preservation, as well, something that came from a strain of selfishness.
As he was generally courteous and had been taught manners by his parents, Josh slowed his pace to match hers as soon as she had caught up with him. He was conscious of the fact that his height and longer legs meant that he could cover a longer distance in a shorter amount of time—it was hard not to be aware of when you left your shorter friends behind. He knew from being runty and shorter than most of the girls in his class when he'd been younger that it was no fun to flag behind just because your normal pace didn't suit everyone else and so he was a little more aware of it in his own height. "Are you supposed to meet your friends inside?" He wondered whether she'd leave as soon as they got to the school (it wasn't a long walk, after all) or whether she'd be going in the same direction as he was and thus stick with him until they got to their desired destinations. "I'm surprised they didn't wait for you. Did you tell them to go on ahead?" As he was curious, he disregarded his earlier concerns about personal questions and asked her anyway.

She was glad that Josh didn't get angry. Gabriella doesn't get angry when one of her questions aren't answered, so she doesn't expect Josh to be, even though he is a fire elemental. The girl hasn't met anyone who would feel anger when a question of their's wasn't answered. She would be surprised if someone does get angry about that, but then there are so many people in this world, so you never know what kind of people you meet. The girl decided to stay open minded whenever she meets someone, and she tries not to judge the person for the way they present themselves to her or anyone else.
The two of them continued to walk in the drizzle of rain that's dampening their hair. The question surprised Gabriella. She never took for Josh as someone who would care about one's well being, especially her. The two of them aren't friends yet they aren't really enemies. "I'm fine, none of the glass got me," Gabriella replied with a smile in a friendly casual tone, compared to Josh's. He sounded formal as if, she was someone she worked with. Maybe the two of them will end up being co-workers someday, so that's good practice, for him. The girl doesn't know why that came into her head. She wants to work in the medical field, and she's not sure what Josh wants to do, so why is she assuming that they will be co-workers? Gabriella mentally shook her head to make that thought disappear. She won't mind working with him, it's just that she can't imagine how the both of them will work together.
Josh's next question caused Gabi to turn to look up at the tall fire elemental. She looked back down at the snowy courtyard of the academy before answering, "I don't think so, I can walk back to the dorms myself." The girl replied making sure that Josh would hear her. She doesn't know why her "friends" ditched her to be out here alone with someone she doesn't really like, or hate. It's true that Gabriella can make her way to the dorms herself. "Actually, no, I told them to wait but I guess they wanted to go in before it started drizzling," Gabriella said looking up at the infinite amount of drops of water falling falling to the earth. But the next rumble of thunder was a louder than the previous one that happened earlier. The girl's heart jumped and she froze. This time it wasn't only the thunder, but the way this storm started to feel familiar.

[Sending a PM your way!]
Joshua nodded curtly to show that he'd heard, relieved that there were no injuries that would need to be explained away. It would be of inconvenience to him if Gabriella needed to head off to the medical wing because of his overpowered shot. Not so much because she'd be hurt, that would be more her problem, but because they'd want an explanation and he did not think that she would lie for him. Why would she? They might not have been enemies but he couldn't call her a friend, either. Josh wouldn't lie for her if it was his neck on the line and so he automatically assumed that she wouldn't do it for him. That was fine. It wasn't expected. At any rate, it wouldn't need to happen seeing as she had no injuries. He considered his chances on the fact that only one person had seen and no one had been hurt, deciding that Lady Luck had decided to be kind to him today. His luck wasn't terrible but it usually wasn't the best—more like average.
"Ah, so that's where you're headed." Joshua's mind instantly went to the warmth and comforting atmosphere of the Fire dormitories. He was banned from the area now and so much as stepping down into the dungeons was asking for it. He sometimes missed the maze of hallways and the dark, heat-filled passages. He had spent a lot of time down in the dungeons and in his element's dormitories during his first years at the Academy. Then suddenly he'd been kicked out thanks to his loyalty and he was forced to live with the realisation they'd never accept him back. It was fine since he lived in the Hollow and didn't need the dorms, per say, but he still got a little nostalgic at times. It had been a good place to study when the library got too crowded and he felt he needed space. "I'm off to the library," he said as the place popped into his mind. It was one of his favourite haunts at the Academy and the place you were most likely to find him if he wasn't in class. History section, third floor. "I've got some books I need for class." He normally wouldn't have offered such information but he figured he'd let her know why he hadn't yet parted from her presence, and that was because they were going the same way for now. There was a hallway up ahead he'd need to turn left on whereas Gabriella would need to head right if she wanted her dorms.
He arched an eyebrow as she spoke of her friends. "How polite." It was slightly sarcastic but not scathing. He liked the rain and didn't mind the thunder, either, but he did prefer to be warm and dry and just listening to the pounding of the water rather than being out in it. He enjoyed light drizzling but it was coming down in sheets outside and it would take a great deal of energy to fend that off with his powers. He paused in surprise when Gabriella froze, casting her a quizzical look. His gray eyes were puzzled. "Something wrong?" As he himself did not fear storms, it did not occur to the Fire graduate that the sound had been what made her stiffen. Instead he merely wondered whether she'd had some sort of epiphany and had just stopped walking. Realising that they were at the intersection of castle halls, he gestured in the direction he was meant to be taking. "Well, I've got books to be checking out, so... I suppose I'll see you around."

"Thanks for reminding me, I need to go to the library, too." Gabriella said when Josh mentioned the library. Gabriella loves the academy's library, it's the biggest one that she's ever been to. But then she did hear about the Library of Congress. She's old enough to go in there and look up things about the History of the States. The girl has only seen pictures of the Library of Congress, and it's amazing how beautiful and quaint it is. Gabriella does wonder how long the Library of Congress has been in this world. It is definitely older than her, but by how many years? She has always wanted to see it for herself whenever she had the time, but she needs to finish school first.
She smiled when Josh gave a sarcastic comment about how her friends left her out here in the drizzle with him. Gabriella doesn't mind just that there's always a bit of tension in the air whenever the two of them bump into each other. The girl tries to avoid him whenever he's surrounded by a group of people he seems to be comfortable with. Josh doesn't seem like a bad person, but his element is fire, she doesn't care about that, but apparently nature does. It's hard for her to have a nice conversation with him with the obvious tension in the air. But this time the tension has been dampened by the drizzle. It's nice to be able to talk to Josh without it really, but maybe he's still feeling the barrier between the two.
"S-sorry, I don't like thunder," Gabriella managed to say. She did try to calm her voice before talking but he was going to leave her in the courtyard with a thunder storm coming closer towards the academy. She walked to catch up with Josh, as the drizzle became a bit harder, she didn't even bother to use her abilities to bend the water to fall somewhere else. She let the water soak her hair and clothes. The library will give her some comfort, she remembered how her father always read her a book under the covers whenever a thunder storm occurred, that's what always calmed her down.

Joshua just nodded at her comment, not really knowing how to reply. He had not told her with the intention of reminding her and so he wasn't exactly going to take credit for that. Assuming that she would probably go at a different time seeing as he figured she'd meet her friends in the dormitories first, Joshua still bore the mindset that they'd part ways at the branch in the hall. He was glad to be out of the rain and cold at least. The castle was heated by fire and powered by thunder elementals and so it was a near-constant haven from all sorts of natural disasters. He liked the great outdoors but the school was nice when it was raining and you didn't want to be soaked to the skin. There was enough risk of winter illnesses as is, he didn't exactly fancy the idea of increasing it. Having grown up with a doctor that constantly badgered him about health risks, Josh tended to be wary of those kind of things.
He didn't know what to think of her apparent fear. He assumed that was what she meant when she said that she did not like storms, just judging by the way she'd froze at the sound of the thunder. He also took notice of the fact she was still quite wet from when they'd been outside. He was not a compassionate person but he also wasn't rude enough to dry himself off and not extend the same courtesy to whomever he happened to be with. Unless, of course, they were an enemy, but he didn't consider her as such. They might not have gotten along as friends but he felt no hate nor tension. Waving a hand, he allowed the heat to wreath the area so that it would dry her clothes and skin, ward off the cold and the rain. "I've always liked them." It was a statement and in no way meant to come across as condescending. He understood paranoia and phobia, did not question or ridicule it. Joshua had an intense phobia of needles as well as guns and drowning so he would be quite hypocritical to mock her for her own discomfort in the storm.
Josh blinked as she went down the same hallway as him. "Oh, are you headed to the library now?" He didn't stop walking as he spoke but he certainly kept his pace even and rhythmic to match hers. It was a bit hard to talk to someone when you were miles ahead. He might not have been expecting them to head to the same place but he had no protests against it. Josh did not own the Academy and he did not pretend to. Besides, Gabriella was not half bad. He certainly hadn't found any outstanding reasons to resent her today. Once they had reached the cavernous place with it's zig-zagging hallways of books and staircase leading to the upper floors, Joshua headed confidently in the direction of the Biology section. He had been here many times before seeing as his major dealt with a lot of the books in it and he immediately zeroed in on the row of books he was looking for. He had all of the textbooks and coursebooks, his own copies, but he liked to read a little extra on what they happened to be studying as well. Pulling out a thick volume, he frowned at it for a moment, trying to figure out if he'd read it before. Nope, don't think so, he decided, sitting down.

Gabriella felt safe in the nice warm academy, she even felt warmer than she usually did whenever she walked in. The girl glanced around and saw Josh warming her up. How can she resent this guy? He doesn't seem like the usual nice guy, that most people would love to hang out with. But it was nice of Josh to help her dry up. Gabi probably would have caught a bad cold if he didn't. "Thanks," The girl said as she put her hands in her pockets. Gabriella always felt that her hands were always cold during the harsh cold winters of Canada. Her hands are usually quite dry, but thanks to her mother's recommendation of a great moisturizer, her skin felt quite nice. Her skin hasn't felt this smooth for many winters, she needs to write a thank you note to her mother. The moisturizer was working wonders on her dry brittle skin that comes during the winter.
Gabriella furrowed her eyebrows. She has never met anyone that enjoys the sound of thunder. The girl found that quite shocking, thunder can be quite scary in her opinion, but she has been afraid of it since she was a child. The girl just nodded at this fact about Josh liking storms. Gabriella can't deny that she loves the sound of rain hitting a window pane, that helps her calm down a bit. Even hearing the sound of the rain hitting the castle walls was how she fell asleep whenever she had those sleepless nights. Gabriella was brought out of her thoughts when Josh asked if she was heading towards the library. "Yeah, I need some books on anatomy," She replied thinking about what she needed. She had a research paper that was due at the end of the semester.
Gabriella knew that anatomy books would be under biology, even though it was a completely different subject. It's probably just another division of biology, it focuses on the human body, which involves biology. The girl has been a fan of that subject for quite some time now, but she chose a different major out of interest. Gabriella was taking her time to walk up to the section of where her books would be. She always liked to take in the enviroment of the big library before starting on her homework and research. When she finally made her way up to the Biology section she saw Josh there. She assumed he majored in Biology, but asked anyways, "Are you a Bio major?" The girl asked as she picked out a book towards the bottom of the shelf. She pulled it out and read the cover, and put it back, for it wasn't what she was looking for.

Though not perhaps the friendliest person in the world, Joshua did dip his head in brief acknowledgement of the thanks. It was a silent 'you're welcome', but at least he did not ignore her. Josh was capable of being quite civil and polite toward those that he neither hated nor felt particularly friendly with—a habit that had been drilled into him by his parents. His mother was known around Maple Hollow as she was a politician and his father a very wealthy doctor who owned the hospital. They'd not wanted their son to get a bad reputation and ruin both the family name and his own, cutting off future pathways for himself thanks to arrogance and the like. He was grateful to them for their guidance even if he'd never really said it out loud. That said, he was not nice to his schoolmates just because it could benefit him, he was cordial out of habit. He'd been taught civility for certain reasons, taught manners as well, and now they were like clockwork. He'd hold open a door for someone without thinking about the kindness of the gesture. It truly had become habitual for him. Besides, he was finding Gabriella to be one of the Water students he'd perhaps judged wrong in the past. Being a Fire, he'd been predisposed to dislike the lot of them. Now he realised that being on their side wasn't too bad, after all.
Anatomy? The word caught his interest immediately but Joshua did not question it, deciding that it was probably best to keep prying to a minimum. Despite being as nice as he could be to her for the time being (not starting fights and all that) Josh still didn't feel comfortable enough to propose random questions. If it came up in conversation he would certainly take his chances on it but for now he'd try to remain subtle. He felt a little unsure of the situation when she tagged after him. What's she doing? Civil attitude did not take away his suspicious personality. It didn't show in his expression or posture as he continued toward his desired section but the confusion was in his thoughts. He wasn't sure if he liked this. Where was Gabriella going? He glanced toward her as she spoke and noticed that she was taking out an Anatomy book. That's right, he remembered, they're over here, now. They had been in a different part of the library until recently when the librarian had decided to move them for convenience. Internally he relaxed, realising his suspicions had been unwarranted. "Yes," he admitted. "Well, sort of. Biology and History." He had taken a double major because he'd been torn between his future and his passion. History had always been his favourite subject but medicine had been the career he'd wanted. So he compromised—or, rather, just took them both. It was double the work but he'd always been good with pushing his limits.
Gabriella had also, perhaps unknowingly, provided him an avenue to ask the question he'd suppressed earlier. Gesturing at the book in her hands as he straightened up with his own held loosely at his side, he asked, "Anatomy? Are you in Biology?" He'd had to take a few anatomy classes for his major and so he knew that it was a part of it but was also aware that it could be a personal interest or perhaps a part of another course. He felt a slight tug to ask more questions, delve deeper into this apparent connection. Joshua hadn't really talked to many people with a similar interest in medicine. There was Ace, one of his best friends that he'd met at a hospital, but he was different. He didn't seem as passionate about medicine and so Josh saved him the barrage of inquiries. He wondered if Gabby was the same. Some people went through phases of enjoying subjects only to drop them later on at a moment's notice. As he did not know the Water graduate personally, he could not tell which category she fell under. "I'd say I was surprised we don't share any classes but then again, you're in a different year, aren't you?" It was more of a question than an observation. He thought they were in different years but he was open to the possibility of being wrong.
