Ravi practically burst into the library, panting slightly. Running through a chilled morning wasn't the best idea, but Ravi had never been in his right senses when he was excited about something.
Coughing quietly to thaw out his lunges, he pulled the snowcap further down on his head and yanked his hair out of his eyes, his eyes scanning the library for signs of Joshua. Ravi's shoulder bag strap had slid and was now being held by its owner braced on his upper arm. Ravi pulled it back onto his shoulder carefully, making sure not to bend the folder inside.
He started forward, scanning the rows of tables for his friend, knowing he'd be standing a bit outside of the crowd whether he was trying to or not. He got a few looks as he passed by, trudging a bit of snow and ice in his path, leaving small puddles when it would thaw out. Finally he spotted the target he was looking for, and a small grin cross over his face.
Without hesitating, he sneaked quietly towards the table and pulled out a chair across from Josh, slumping down into it and grinning a close-lipped smile at him. Judging by Ravi's normal "thoughtful look", this new expression might look a little creepy to those who knew him. But he didn't care. To the outward eye he was probably still quiet and laid back Ravi Peters.
"Hey. he greeted as nonchalant as possible when he couldn't wait anymore. "How's it going?'
He pulled out his journal, a textbook and a few pens from his bag. And then he pulled out his sketchbook, laying it over his stack of books and opening it just enough so that he could see it. "Oh yeah...I would've waited, and this is completely random. But..." He grinned a very little, never one to smile too much. But the genuine excitement glowed in his eyes. "Happy early Birthday or whatever." He gently tore the paper out of his sketchbook and slid it across the table towards his friend, smirking down at the sketched picture before opening his textbook. For a second, he was worried Josh wouldn't like it, even if it was of Nell. Ravi never knew how Josh thought of Ravi's photography, sketching and writing obsession. Ravi had made the sketch with Josh in mind, so Josh wouldn't kill him...right? Shrugging, Ravi passed it off as nothing and started leafing through his journal, realizing for the umpteenth time how dull studying was going to be. He generally liked learning, but recently he had found no joy in it, maybe since he had gotten a lower grade on his last assignment for work he thought he had done a good job on. But those were thoughts for another time. Right now he looked back up at Josh, wanting to know what he thought of sketched Nell.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

Joshua's expression was intense and full of concentration as his gray eyes scanned the pages of the book, soaking in the information like a sponge. He loved to learn new things and expand his knowledge, loved to read about history and science and and culture, anything he could get his hands on, really. He'd never been much of a fiction lover but he'd read that too, provided there was nothing else. He was currently studying up for an essay subject he'd chosen in his history major. It was an opinion based one—those were his favourites. He liked being able to argue his point reasonably through the written word rather than a verbal spat. Joshua was not fond of yelling or bickering. He could handle a casual debate as long as it was casual but others tended to get too intense for his liking. He was not as opinionated as one might assume. He liked to keep to himself and believe what he would. Did it really matter if others thought he was incorrect? Not to Joshua. He flipped the page, too absorbed in his reading to notice the approach of another.
That is, until Ravi announced his presence by flopping down into the chair across from him. Libraries were quiet silent and the sudden noise caused him to glance up. A flicker of annoyance fluttered through his gaze as his concentration was broken but it calmed the moment he recognised the intruder as a friend. "Hello, Ravi," he said pleasantly enough. He might not have sounded the most amiable or approachable but he was fond of the Wind elemental and so did not sound hostile, either. Many underestimated his capacity to be a good and loyal friend. He'd known the other boy for a while despite their quiet personalities taking their sweet time to kick things off. He considered him a friend. They were not as close as he was to, say, Devin or Ace (and certainly not as close as him and Nell), but it was enough that he felt comfortable, relaxed in his presence. "Fine," he responded with a shrug. Though his default answer to that question no matter his mood, he was telling the truth this time. "I was just studying for class. You?"
Ravi's smiling was a bit unsettling to Josh but he didn't bother questioning it. Just because he didn't look like that often didn't mean it wasn't possible to break a grin every once and a while, right? Even Josh could be convinced to expression his cheerfulness in the company of the right people. He had not smiled yet since his friend had approached but his expression could not be called fierce. It was neutral, default, stoic. Waited? Random? What is he on about? Josh was too polite to interrupt with his questions and so simply decided to wait and see if Ravindra would explain things himself. Which he did, a moment later. "Early? No kidding—my birthday isn't until the end of April." He sounded mildly amused but didn't otherwise protest, looking interested. He had been more focused on his friend than on the sketchbook until Ravi brought his attention to it by ripping something out of it. Joshua blinked slowly as something was slid across the table to him, silently pulling it over to his side once it was close enough. What's this, I wonder?
His gray eyes were unreadable for a long moment as he took the sketch into his hands and examined it carefully. It was undoubtedly of Nell, for Ravi was no amateur artist and Joshua had always had a quiet admiration for his work. He'd never been particularly attracted to the arts as much as his friend but he did still harbour an appreciation for them. He could play the guitar and even a little piano but he'd never been into acting, sketching, that sort of thing. He quite enjoyed writing but only because he did it so much for the sake of his essays. "You're skilled," he said, voicing his opinion. Then he looked up. "Though I do hope you weren't admiring my fiancée from afar." Dark brows arched up in challenge. He briefly acknowledged that he'd never told Ravi about their engagement—well, now he knows—and then his lips twitched into the slightest hint of a smile. "Don't worry," he assured him, "I don't think you would do that. Rest assured, though, that if you ever do, I'm going to have to hurt you." The smile faded but the amusement remained in his gray gaze, betraying the fact that his mood was lighter than his words. He trusted his friend and had only been pulling his leg. "Thank you," he added in acknowledgement. He didn't have a lot of friends and he appreciated things like this.

Ravi knew full well the minute Josh set eyes on him, the entire thing would be blown. It didn't matter much, Ravi never got testy when things didn't go his way. He would just shrug it off, it wasn't that big of a deal. The way some people got huffy when things turned out differently than they were expecting was confusing to Ravi. Why fret about the small things?
"I'm doing alright. About to study too."
he shrugged, though kept his displeasure at the thought off his expression. It didn't help to complain about stuff. "If you don't mind me sitting here, that is...I can move." he offered sincerely. He knew Josh was almost like him, that he sometimes just liked to be alone with no bother. Generally Ravi liked to work alone anyway, but Josh was quiet when he wanted to be and never interrupted when Ravi was studying or working on something. So Ravi never minded studying around Josh. Other study groups did nothing but talk. Ravi smiled a quiet kind of smile that was most reflected in his eyes. It was his typical smile, almost a shy kind of look that couldn't be read easily except if one knew how to read his eyes. Josh was completely confused, especially when Ravi mentioned his birthday. But Josh also looked interested, which was good to see. It meant he might except Ravi's "gift" easier. And then Ravi studied Joshua's face when his friend examined the sketch of Nell. Ravi had been working on it off and on for a while, mostly because it was difficult to keep up to date on every detail of Nell's face without seeing her whether in a picture or in person, and the two didn't see much of one another. Ravi had also been too nervous to snap a picture of her, for fear of her telling Josh in passing or Josh finding out some other way, which would spoil the entire thing. Ravi was a patient person, especially when good results came out of it, but he was afraid the sketch would take long after Joshua's birthday at the rate it was going. Joshua's expression was hard to read as he studied it now, and Ravi drew his hand through his hair and removed his hat, throwing it in his bag in his wait. "So?...what's the verdict?" he asked quietly and patiently. And then Josh spoke of skill, which made Ravi smile, and of admiring Nell, which Ravi shook his head at with a larger grin. But wait... fiancée? Had Ravi heard it right? He stared a moment, grin slowly fading from his face, his brows inching downward in confusion...which turned into interest when Joshua didn't correct himself...which turned into a fresh new grin, wider than before. "Josh!"" it was louder than normal for Ravi, and he received a few 'shh's from around them, but he didn't care. "No way... Wow, really?" he leaned back in his chair, grinning, and then leaned forward again, excited for his friend and Nell. He had known they'd been together for a while, and he admired their relationship's depth. He loved them both as friends, valued them as people. And now they would be together forever. Ravi couldn't be more excited, and it was apparent on his grinning face. "Congratulations, man." he said quietly, but with sincerity as he smiled wider. "How long have you kept this from me?" he narrowed his eyes jokingly.[/blockquote][/blockquote] [ahaha, love it! Hope this is okay. I rambled a bit, sorry.]

Joshua shook his head and gave a quiet wave of his hand. Though he did not speak, he did not mind Ravindra's presence at his table. Joshua, too, hated it when people interrupted his quiet and solitude—he came to the library to accomplish things, not to hold conversations. However, he'd never known the Wind student to be an annoyance in the library and so did not object to the company. Nevertheless, he appreciated the polite gesture of asking. Some would just assume themselves welcomed and sit down without further ado, making it a little harder to get rid of them than if they actually gave the option. Not that Josh was opposed to being rude, though, for he did not have much of a filter. Had he disliked the idea of Ravi being anywhere near him while he studied, the Fire graduate would have told him so. Even though they got along, it did not allow him a safe pass from Josh's opinion.
A quiet smile touched his lips as Ravi reacted with more enthusiasm than he had expected, attracting the attention of several people in the process—Joshua's gray gaze flicked toward the others in the library and then back to his friend, deciding it wasn't worth it to glare and be snide about things. Ravi had said his name a little loudly, after all, so it was only justified. "Yes?" His tone was quiet and teasing of tone. The smile was more akin to a smirk as seconds passed, the Fire graduate unable to hide his amusement. He found a certain joy from telling people about the engagement in various manners, getting a kick out of their individual reactions. He dipped his head when the Wind asked for confirmation. I'd be a bit of a dick to joke about that, wouldn't I? He contemplated that thought for a moment. Well, perhaps not if he only messed around with his friends. To pull a trick on his family or worse, Nell herself, would be a little different. His mother had been upset with him for waiting to tell her and Josh could only imagine how that upset might have been increased had it all been a careful sham. Plus, that ring didn't come cheap. Thankfully he was not short on cash for though he knew Nell probably didn't care how much money went into it, the ring had been a pricey investment.
"Thank you." He delighted in the fact that most people did not seem to care about their young age or doubt their affections for one another. He cared deeply for Nell and it frustrated him when that was not recognised or accepted by others. Like Lovejoy. The mere thought of the Water graduate made his blood boil and he pushed it from his mind. "Not long," he replied. "It's only been a few weeks." He'd not bothered to call everyone he knew up and inform them of the engagement but he did tell his friends when he met them in passing. It was an important thing in his life and he trusted them with the information. Trust was a big thing to Josh. If you extended your trust to him, he'd respect it, and he would probably learn to trust you in return. He did not tell those he trusted about his personal matters but he was more relaxed around them as a whole.
He went back to his studies for a short while after that, seeing as they were both there for the same reason and there was no point in putting it off. He was comfortable with the silence and did not find it awkward. At the end of a chapter, he glanced upward and said amiably, "So what are you studying for?" His questioning tone was soft but audible. Spending most of his time in libraries and other quiet places (such as classes), it was no problem for him to keep his tone level and light. He was not at an angle where he could properly read the title of the material and wasn't about to crane his neck in order to get a better look. Asking was a lot more practical. Ravi was a friend and Josh was not meek or bashful to begin with. In fact, he was quite the opposite. It had not always been that way but the days of his youth were long behind him. They were not days upon which he often reminisced.

Ravi grinned his same vague grin when Joshua silently allowed him leave to study at the same table. He always liked to say that he had friends, it made him feel-- maybe accepted? Like he belonged so long as he had a few people who tolerated him. He didn't like feeling like he was misplaced in the world. He never minded being alone to his thoughts, but sometimes there were those days when he just needed someone to tell him without words or knowledge that he was, well, okay.
It was really great news that the two of them were together. Nell and Joshua. Ravi felt a deep sense of gratitude that he was told so soon as well. He didn't know if Josh had gone and told a bunch of other people, but still. That Joshua had thought to tell Ravi about the engagement was enough to tell that they were good enough friends. Ravi valued Josh as more than a friend, more of a person to look up to maybe? That was just Ravi's tendency when looking at people who were slightly older than him. Joshua was a good three years at least, proving a good enough example for Ravi to look to, should he need one. He didn't always really want or need one, but the thought that there was
that availability was enough for Ravi. He had to wonder if Joshua saw him as a little kid compared to his other --probably older-- friends. Oh well, can't be helped. At least he tolerated the Wind. "Few weeks," Ravi repeated with a grin, leaning back in his chair with glowing eyes, "Long enough to set a date? Or are you taking it chill?" he inquired, shuffling slowly through his textbook without really having any goal to where he was going to start reading. He brushed a hand through his hair, his smile turning to a joking one. "If you'd like, I can be your cliche engagement photographer. Awkward hugging poses and all." he grinned delightedly, expecting a strong protest from his friend. Joshua, from what Ravi learned of him, wasn't one of those grandiose announcements in newspapers, hokey pictures showing off rings and smiles, overly obvious Public Display of Affection type of people. And that's something Ravi preferred. Even if Josh had that tendency, Ravi hadn't really noticed it much. He prodded through the pages of his book with a bored expression on his face. It was misplaced from his normal mood, the desire to learn. For some reason recently it felt like Ravi was off his game, that he couldn't focus on learning anything that people forced him into learning. He used to love school, but he guessed there were just those days when life got you down and school just made it worse. He looked up when Joshua asked the question, taking a slow breath and shrugging. "History." he stated simply, unconsciously starting to doodle something int he margin of his journal. "That is, if I can ever focus. What are you working on?" He inquired, genuinely interested. Ravi imagined college as ten times more fascinating than general high school (whether at a school for Elementals or not). Maybe it was just his hopes talking, but college seemed to be the place where one could actually focus on what they wanted to do, rather than be forced to learn something that they didn't want to learn more than the other thing that was frowned on. He knew that as soon as he entered college himself, things would change, especially if he pursued the family business of psychology, if only to make his father happy. And if that meant giving up what he really wanted to do in life, to please his father, to make him proud...Ravi wouldn't hesitate. And that was a sad fact.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

Despite being older, Joshua had never really thought to look down on Ravi—or anyone else, really. He was a pretty independent guy that gained no satisfaction from elevating himself above others. He acknowledged the fact that Ravi wasn't old enough to drink legally, like he could, but that was about as far as it went. In terms of friends, Joshua treated the lot of them equally. He did not have a huge circle and so he viewed them all with the same quiet respect. Anyone that could put up with him was, in Joshua's eyes, a keeper. Especially Nell, but she was a different story entirely. There was a lot more than friendship there. "Hell, no," he said, smirking a little. "We're still young, we're taking it slow." He had proposed to her in order to solidify their relationship, to assure her that he was ready to make a full-time and permanent commitment to their relationship. He was in no rush to tie the knot and start talking about vows and wedding dates and all of that. Just knowing that he had Nell was enough for him. Still, they would get married eventually. He was set on that. There was no point paying an arm and a leg for an engagement ring if an engagement was all that would come of it.
Just as his friend had suspected, Josh responded to the comment with a soft snort of disbelief and a good-natured roll of his eyes. He did not take Ravi seriously but he still said, "Thanks but no thanks. I'd sooner jump a cliff." He was not a big fan of cliché romance or public displays of affection. He would certainly kiss Nell in a public place if the mood was right but he wouldn't spend the next five minutes playing tonsil hockey and disgusting the people around him. He had manners. They also had their own place—well, Nell's place, where he was currently staying—and so any affections would be the same behind closed doors. He got no thrill from disrupting the peace of the public. However, he did like people to recognise that they were together. He took pride in his relationship and so he'd slip subtle hints into conversations where it suited him, similar to how he'd dropped the note of the engagement to Ravindra. He enjoyed that.
His gaze sparked with interest as History was mentioned, though he did not immediately reply. It was not until Ravi returned the question that he said, "The same. Who'd have thought?" It was slightly sarcastic but light of tone. His favourite subject was history and it was common knowledge around anyone that spend a significant amount of time with him. He'd loved the subject since he was a kid and he'd panicked when he'd realised his career aspirations clashed with his personal interests. Hence the double major and all the extra workload. Joshua held his place in the book with his thumb and then flipped it over to show the cover, giving his companion an idea of the material he was perusing. It was for class, sure, but history had never felt like work to him. The essay itself was saved, half-complete, to a flash drive in his laptop. He was not someone that could make frequent pauses to read and then write down new sentences—it always gave him the feeling that he'd write something too close to what he'd read in a book. Instead, Josh would read several chapters of a book or two, give it a few hours, then return to his work. It was a longer process but it made him feel better about his originality. His professors had certainly never complained.
"So, why can't you focus?" He was honestly curious. He could definitely relate to the feeling, even if he didn't suffer from it quite as often as the average teenager. Well, alright, he wasn't a teenager any more, but that was besides the point. Even someone who generally enjoyed working and keeping busy could be prone to distractions. Sometimes he got restless and wanted to get up and move around rather than sitting and reading books all day. It was times like these he usually hunted down his fiancée and asked if she was up for anything, or else just hit the gym to burn off the extra energy. He had to keep his physique up somehow, even with his vegetarian diet. "Just a bad day, or...?"
