The Medical Wing was always one of the busiest and most tense places during a war. It was unspoken that the Wing was a place of peace so that all those seriously injured could rest and recover but that did not make the students trapped there any less tense with one another. The staff of the Wing would kick out any students that started a fight almost immediately but thankfully most had the respect not to go for the throat in such a crowded place. Ashton had given up his seat in the waiting room for a girl that could barely walk. She was a Thunder who'd apparently been tripped by a vine lashed out by an older Earth. Even the peaceful, calm elementals could wound sometimes, even if it was not entirely intentional. She was being supported by two of her mates but she waved them away irritably as soon as she sat down.
The Thunder and Fire who had come in with her gave him a harsh glare but Ashton held up his hands with a warning frown. "Let's not make this a fight." As a leader he was expected to set an example for the rest of his element, some of whom were gathered in the Wing for various injuries and to visit friends. He had given up the seat out of common courtesy. Thunder elementals had a special place for bitterness in his heart because of the last war but Ashton was not a heartless person. Wary of them though he may be, he was still going to extend his kindness in a situation like this. Her friends apparently doubted this for they certainly hovered protectively. "I can take care of myself," she snapped. The Thunder raised a doubtful brow at his fellow elemental and the Fire just laughed. Some friends, thought Ashton. Well, maybe that was how they dealt with things like that in their element. She didn't seem too offended, anyway, just irritable.
"Why are you here?" one of the Waters asked him, her brow furrowing. The girl's lip was busted and she was holding her arm gingerly--perhaps due to having been shocked, though there was no visible mark. "You don't look hurt." Ashton, who was indeed in quite a bit of pain, lifted his shirt so that she could see what had ailed him. A large burn marred his right side, curving around to affect some of his back and stomach, as well. A Fire elemental had caught him unexpectedly in the side and then dashed off before the Earth leader could retaliate. Normally he would call such thing cowardice but he didn't think the boy had been afraid. He was probably just off to go and brag to his buddies about how he'd gotten a good hit on the Earth leader. Letting his shirt fall again to cover the injury he winced ever so slightly as the fabric brushed against the wound. He hoped that they would be able to catch it in time so that there would be no scarring but this place was awfully busy. I hate wars, he sighed, leaning with his good side against a wall to wait.

All that she wished was to say that this was just a normal day but unfortunately she couldn't. After the war had started just a few weeks earlier, she had come to the idea that nothing would the 'just like a normal day' for a little bit. Even though it had taken awhile for her to realize this, it took a couple of fire kids to come up behind her while she was walking back to her dorm after lessons and they decided that it would be fun to bash her up and in true Aramina fashion, she didn't tell anyone. It had only been up a week or so afterward that someone had realized what had happened. That person being her brother, after she had forgotten to wear a hoodie while she was in a skype video chat with him and considering that that was last night, he had said that if she didn't go and get her injuries checked out then he would come down. That, being the last thing that she needed at this moment. It also doesn't help when while you are walking down to the medical wing you get shocked by a couple thunder students trying to have a laugh.
As soon as a few thunder kids that had shocked her had left she got herself up, trying to to think about the places which were screaming at her to stop and just rest for a second, she began to re-continue her journey to the medical wing. Even though she wasn't getting there very fast, she knew that she would get there eventually. It also helped that on her way there she met up with a couple of water kids that helped her for a little bit of the way before they were ambushed once again. They had told her to get to the medical wing as fast as she could, so that is what she had done. Even though she had no idea who she would meet up with once she had gotten there.
As soon as she walked, or wobbled, in all that she knew was that it might be awhile until she was able to get checked up. There had been so many people sitting, lying and standing around waiting for one of the nurses to be able to have a look at their injuries and with that, there were many different kids. Each element could make some sort of damage and then each student had a different way to hurt a person with their element, making each injury different from the next. As soon as she found a nice place to sit on the ground she had heard a couple of students starting to have a argument, but one of the voice sounded familiar to Aramina. She quickly looked toward the small group to see Ashton lift up his shirt to show someone his injury and all that Aramina could do was gasp. It was pretty bad. As soon as he had leaned against the wall once again Aramina came up behind him and tapped his shoulder. "Hello."

Sometimes Ashton understood why war caused so many people to resign in their leader positions. It was a difficult thing to be dealing with when you were just an ordinary student with your ordinary problems but it got even more insane and difficult to deal with when you were responsible for your own injuries as well as those of an entire element. He had thought about resigning after the war himself on a couple of days where it had gotten really bad but in the end usually came to the same conclusion--he couldn't do that to his fellow Earth elementals. After he'd handle his temporary position so well during the first war they'd asked him to step up as a real leader and he felt that to renounce his position after all of that would be letting them down in some way. So instead he swept his emerald-coloured gaze around the room to seek out his companions and make sure that no one else in the place was giving them trouble. The leaders were meant to keep the peace and that was still on his mind even though he was here for an injury of his own. It was always going to be on his mind.
He was so busy concentrating on his thoughts about the war and the Earth element that he did not notice anyone approaching or hear any sort of footsteps. In fact, he had no idea Aramina was there at all until he felt the tap on his shoulder and heard a voice nearby. He was not someone that reacted with violence to his surprise but he did jump visibly and spin around in surprise, hand immediately going to his chest as his heart picked up speed. His eyes registered her familiar appearance before his ears could recognise the sound of her approach and a weak laugh brushed past his lips. "Ara," he said, not sounding angry at all as he sighed in relief. "You gave me a fright, there!" It was a lucky thing that Ashton was by nature such a friendly and relaxed person. Taking a Fire or Thunder elemental by surprise probably wouldn't have netted the best reaction. Heck, even some of his own side could be prone to accidental violence when you caught them off guard. Ashton usually was not. A few of the Earths had turned their attention toward their leader when they caught the movement but as there seemed to be no danger everything went back to normal after a few seconds.
Ash smiled at her despite the fact that he was in pain, but it was that sort of smile that one produced at the sickbed of a friend. He figured that she was not here because she fancied a look at all the medical diagrams and cold-and-flu tip charts hanging on the walls. "Did they get you, too?" He didn't freak her out by showing her the bad burn on his side, unaware that she already knew about it anyway. He would have asked a generic question like 'so how are you?' but that was a pretty stupid thing to inquire in the event of a war. Especially when you were meeting up with your friend in a place as grim as the medical wing. 'Oh, I'm fine, just a couple teeth knocked out and missing a finger. You?' Yeah, he wasn't going to take that route. Instead, he said, "This place is really hectic during wars. Sucks we had to run into one another here of all places, eh?"

As soon as Ashton had turned around to see herself and jumped just that little bit, she really couldn't help but laugh and just be that little bit worried. For the way that he and looked just before, she mainly just wanted to know if him jumping just that little bit had hurt him at all, in the slightest. It had just been one of those in the moment decisions and she thought that nothing really bad would happen. "Ohh," She said with a hint of sadness in her voice, you could tell that she really hadn't meant to do that at all, "I am sorry. are you alright?" She asked hoping that there hadn't been to much damage done. Aramina quickly looked around her to try and make sure that no one, mainly the earth students in the room, hadn't thought that something had happened and that a massive fight would just start to happen in the medical wing of the academy.
Though it was what Ashton had said next that really brought her back to home and what was happening in this current point in time. At the same time the pain that she had been feeling just a little while earlier was now starting to come back to her in little bits at a time, thankfully. She didn't know what would happen if all the pain had come back to haunt her all at once. "Yes," Aramina said with just a little bit of a sigh, "They got me a couple weeks back but it have just gotten worse and worse until today." She admitted to the earth leader. Trying to explain that she had had a run in with a whole heap of fire students a few weeks ago, even though she hadn't said anything to anyone up until now. "You have a point there," Aramina agreed with the earth leader when he had asked her about the medical wing during wars, "At least they have one." She said, thinking about some of the schools that she had gone to in the past that hadn't had any medical wing at all. Though they really hadn't had war either.

When Ashton detected the slightly sad hint to Ara's tone he immediately waved his hands in an attempt to dismiss her worries. He didn't want her to think that she'd hurt or offended him in some way, he was just a jumpy guy--especially with the whole war that they had going on. "No, no, I'm okay," he said with a chuckle and a bit of a smile. "Just a bit on edge, is all." It made perfect sense for someone to be on edge during the war, too. Sometimes he wondered what it was like to take part in a real war. The Academy's wars caused a lot of injuries and could often make or break friendships as Alliances split the school down the middle but there were hardly ever any deaths. There had apparently been a few in the past chalked up to 'elemental accidents', though. A classmate of his swore that a few of them were due to wars but Ashton wasn't sure he could believe him. Not even the Fire elementals usually aimed to kill, but then again, with the way they'd all treated Nell the first time around could they really be trusted? It made his head hurt to think about it and thus he tried not to over-analyse. They'd just need to power through this war like they'd gotten through all those before and the new year would bring a fresh start. Usually the removal of the graduating leaders and a lot of the bitter senior students calmed things and he hoped it would happen this year, too.
He gave his friend--he considered her a friend, anyway, he built friendships with lightning speed if the other party were agreeable--a sympathetic and sad smile when she explained how they'd attacked her. For someone like Ashton who was very empathetic and hated to see anyone in pain, let alone people he got along with, wars were a hard thing to deal with. However, there was a reason that the guy was the Earth leader. He was made of a tougher substance than one might have imagined and he could handle the pressure a lot better than even he'd have thought himself capable of. "That's harsh," he said, the sympathy showing through in his tone. "Have you... taken sides, yet?" It was proposed somewhat awkwardly because as the Earth leader he felt a little biased. It was obvious that she wasn't with the Fire group if they were making her a target but if she was neutral he really didn't want her to feel pressured. "I just mean that... well, sometimes it helps to have people looking out for you," he amended a little awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck. If Ara was true neutral he didn't know if he could bring himself to turn on her. I'd have to though, wouldn't I? he acknowledged sadly. I'm a leader, I don't have a choice.
The Earth leader nodded his agreement as Aramina brought up a very good point. He gave a minute shudder as he considered the prospect of not having a medical wing in times of war at the Academy, quickly thanking whomever was responsible for running and staffing the place in his mind. "It would devastate the Academy otherwise," he mused gravely. The conversation was grim and he felt a little bad for keeping the mood so dark but during wars there was never much of a choice. What could you talk about except the dreary clouds of war that hung over your head? It was hard for even the optimists like Ashton himself. "Are your injuries very serious?" he asked, knowing that there was a pretty lengthy waiting list for treatment since the wing was so full. "I'd switch spots with you if you want." That was Ash for you, always putting others before himself.
[My muse is on a roll this morning o.o]

For the most part, Aramina was just happy that he was alright. The last thing that she really wanted at this point was for herself to actually hurt someone, namely one of her really good friends. For her, she was just happy at this point, all injuries aside. "That's good," She said while sighing just a little and placing a hand of the back of her neck. "that's good." Ara repeated herself under her breathe. You could see that she was relived in a way, but you could also she that she was still on nerve a little. Like she had seen something, or someone, that didn't want to see. Even though she was good and hiding her emotions at times, you you tell by the look on her face that something was up.
Ashton's question really got her thinking though. When the war had started she didn't wasn't any part in it, though her friends knew that she didn't know what side to turn to. One of her really good friends from her dorm just happens to be the girl leader herself. She is always trying to get people to join her side of the war, and Ara was wondering what she should do. Lose one of her friends, the minority, or go with everyone else, the majority. After a couple minutes thinking about it she decided, for good, what she was going to do. taking every little think into consideration at this point. "I am with you guys." She said with a smile on her face. Ara was really happy with her final decision and she knew that she was going to stick with it. "I know that I have a couple people that have got my back, they just don't have any classes or anything with me." She said with a half smile, if that's what you could it.
Aramina couldn't help but smile just a little. As long as he still agreed with her, she would be happy at this point. Not many people really understood what she was trying to say when she would say stuff like that. It was nice to have someone that agrees with her. Though as soon as Ashton began to ask her about her injuries she could help but laugh a little to herself. Ashton would always put other in front of himself, though that was made Ashton Ashton. "Don't even think about it!" Ara said making sure that she wouldn't give up his spot for herself, "I am fine, it is just a couple of bruises and a little electro shock. No need to worry, ok?"

Ashton smiled reassuringly at her words, though the smile faltered a moment later when he saw that she seemed down. He assumed that it was just lingering feelings of doubt and guilt for the fact that he was hurt, not realising that something else might be up. Ashton was not an idiot but he was also not the most perceptive. He didn't jump to negative conclusions easily because he wanted to believe the best in everyone and everything. "Are you okay?" he questioned, the worry saturating his voice. He hated it when friends were upset, especially when he didn't know why and thus didn't know how to help them. He felt like this was somehow his fault (of course) and so his brows pulled together as he said, "I'm really okay, you know, if that's what this is about." He smiled again, the gesture contrasting for a moment with the concern in the rest of his expression. I wonder what she's thinking?
Though he was not supposed to be biased or try and hoodwink his friends into being on the same side as he was, that did not mean he was not relieved as Aramina said that she was on his side. This was betrayed by the soft laugh that brushed past his lips. Thank god. If he'd had to fight her it likely would have put a bit of a strain on their friendship. He likely would have used the excuse that the medical wing was safe grounds in order to get out of confrontation but it would have meant the end to the friendship at least until the war was over. He didn't want that. He wanted to stay friends with the people he cared for, not cut ties just because of this war. "That's good to hear," he said earnestly. "Aside from the war, how have you been lately?" He felt it was only fair to inquire how she was doing in general rather than just fussing over this whole thing about the war. Peoples lives didn't go on hold just because fighting had broken out at school and he knew that. His mother was still writing her book, his father still went to work every day, Ashton was still looking for a job to save up college money...
He returned her smile and nodded. If she was sure, he wasn't going to force her. Though he definitely put his friends before himself that didn't mean he was an absolute idiot or that he was pushy. Besides, the burn on his side did hurt. He wished he had a friend that was a Fire student. They could apparently heal injuries that were inflicted by the flames. It was the same with Thunder elementals and burns. No Thunder or Fire would want to be friends with our kind. Well, there was Asha, but that hadn't exactly worked out, had it? And Nell had that boyfriend of hers but Ashton didn't know him well, either. "It's hard to believe they're still holding the dance and graduation after all this," he chuckled. "There'll be a lot of new leaders in the new year. Maybe that'll help things." He didn't know whether or not he'd still be leader in the new year. He was eligible but would his element elect him again? There were no 'tryouts' for leader, it just happened to be the choice of the element themselves.

Aramina thought about it for a second but as far as she would have wanted it wouldn't have been the person that she that it was. One of the guys that had hurt her over the past couple of week, unfortunately. She look back at Ashton as soon as he had asked her if she was really alright and she couldn't help but smile to herself, it was just like him to say something like that. Even though it was usually something that she would try to solve on her own, this seemed like something that she should tell someone, it seemed like a good idea a tell a leader when she thought about. "Well, you see the dude over there," Aramina said as she pointed to the guy in question, "I could have sworn that I had seen that dude when I was attack a week or so ago." Even though she was being honest, it sort of felt good to tell him what as on her mind.
At this point Ara was happy that he was trying to make just normal conversion, mainly after what she had just said. Going from saying that to normal was something that she was really thankful for. As soon as he had asked her what she had been doing you could say that she did have to think about that one. Other than running way from people trying to get to her it was either doing work or a little bit of gaming here and there. After a little bit she decided to make it sound as fun as ever, "Well, I have been doing some work here and there but other than that, not much." She said with a bit of a smile, "The war take up so much time and energy doesn't. What about you?" Ara asked with a smile on her face.
Ara couldn't help but agree with what Ashton had just said. She had only been at the school for two years had she hadn't seen a war as bad as this one, though she wasn't really involved with the last one. But she heard about it and how bad it got, even though she didn't know the full details of the war she knew that is was bad for the couple people involved. "You have a point there," Ara said just thinking about the Dance, there was someone that she wanted to go with but she hadn't been able to catch up with him, "Though it sounds awesome, being a leader and all."

Ashton nodded and followed her gaze, emerald eyes settling on the person in question. He was just wondering what this guy had to do with the situation at all when she explained that she had seen him when she was attacked. Though he was not an angry person or anyone violent by nature, he still felt a sweeping sense of distaste toward the boy. "You mean you think he attacked you?" He wasn't going to leap for the guy and start wailing on him in the middle of the Wing, of course. He wouldn't even try to get the guy alone later and attack him. However, if this boy decided to give Aramina trouble again, well, she had allies behind her now. That was the great thing about the alliances. They caused a lot of problems sometimes but it was nice to know that there were a group of people that really had your back during times of need. "If he gives you trouble again, you know who to call," he said with a bit of a smile, turning his gaze away from the boy and back to his friend. "As long as you're with us, our alliance'll be there for you." Given that he was the Earth leader, he could really promise that sort of thing. Some people were wary about trusting the Winds but Aramina had his complete and total trust. Sometimes Ashton was a little too trusting but he always allowed people the benefit of the doubt until they gave him reason to think otherwise.
He nodded in agreement -- no matter who you were or what element you were in, the war was time consuming. It was sometimes a pain to get up in the morning with the knowledge that he was going to have to deal with Earth Elemental Issues 101 instead of whatever homework he had for the day. He loved being there for his element but wars complicated things. "There's been a lot of the same on my end," he said. He'd been flagging behind on his work again and with exams so close he was admittedly panicking about studies as well. He just hoped that luck would carry him into the next year without too much of an issue. He couldn't imagine the lecture he'd get from his parents if he really stressed out and ended up failing because of this war business. "Oh, and I'm going to the dance with a friend of mine," he said with a fond smile. He really did see her as 'just a friend' but that didn't mean he wasn't looking forward to it. He was glad that he could do Hannoly a favour. No one liked to show up to the dance alone. Aramina's in tenth grade. I wonder if she's got a boyfriend old enough to take her? He considered asking and chuckled. "Do you plan on going? I know you're not a junior or senior yet, but..." He trailed off with a cheeky but joking grin.
He was surprised to hear her opinion about being a leader. He knew that there were a lot of people who thought it would be interesting but he hadn't pegged Aramina as the overly ambitious type. Then again, neither was he. His element had elected him temporarily in place of their original election who had gotten hit by a bus and hospitalized in the beginning of the year. That boy hadn't been up to leading once he'd recovered and things had just went from there. He didn't regret the decision to say yes but he'd never really thought about being a leader until the position had been thrust upon him. Maybe that was for the better. It never went to his head this way. He didn't have an ego of which to speak. Ara didn't seem to have one either. "It has its ups and downs," he replied honestly. "I do like it, though. It's nice to know my element trusts me like that." He'd always been good at socializing and making friends even before he'd come to the Academy but that didn't mean he was unappreciative of the trust that the Earths showed in him. He considered most of them his friends, after all.

You could defiantly say that that something that Aramina wouldn't have done if this was any other circumstance. It was never unusual for her to rat somebody out if they had done something to her, due to her always being scared to them wanting to get her back, or something like that. If it wasn't Ashton that had asked her about it then she wouldn't have said anything at all. True. "I am pretty sure," She said with a quiet voice, "It look like guy that did it anyways." Aramina was as sure as a person could be in a situation like this one. Though she was mainly happy with what Ashton had said next. She was really relived to know that a whole heap of people there if she ever needed any help, other than the couple of people that had help her just before, considering they were in a couple of her classes. "Thank you." Aramina said with a smile on her face, you could tell that she was really happy about this.
Ara couldn't help but smile when Ashton asked about her going to the dance. She knew that she wouldn't be able to go but there was someone that she really wanted to go with this coming year, when she was in the right year! "Not this year, but I really want to go next year with this guy that I know." She said with a slight blush on her face. You could tell that she really did have some sort of crush on the boy of mention.
She could tell that Ashton was really proud about being a leader and all. It was something that Ara had been wanting to do for quite a while now but hadn't really had the guts to try and do up to this point. It was also something that she wanted to be able to take part in, being able to help anyone that needed help and having that type of trust by the people around you, would be amazing. "I really do hope that they pick me to be a leader." Ara said with passion.

Ashton's green eyes lit up with an amused sort of curiosity. "Does this guy have a name?" It was friendly teasing when it came from Ashton, not actually meaning to fluster or embarrass anyone. He liked to see his friends cheerful no matter how new they were to a friendship with him and if that meant supporting them through crushes and love interests alike then so be it. Besides, he was curious as to whether he was acquainted with the guy that she liked. "Best of luck on getting to go next year, though," he said sincerely. Even though he teased and trolled a lot for the sake of good sport and a laugh to go along with it he really did mean it when he wished his friends the best. He wondered briefly whether he'd have a date for the prom next year. Would he have gone with Asha if it had worked out better? Ah, of course. He finally thinks that he's over the fiesty Fire and the memories assault him again. Relationships were hard for Ashton, break-ups were hard, so he hoped that Ara's love life worked out a hell of a lot better than his own. He might have had a lot of experience in the dating field—some good, some bad—but that didn't mean he was necessarily 'good' at being in a romantic situation. Quite the opposite if he were to be honest. He hadn't a clue what he was doing half the time.
He tilted his head a little as he regarded the Wind elemental curiously. So she really does want to be a leader, huh? He wondered what it felt like to be that self-assured, to have that kind of confidence in yourself. He wasn't particularly low on self-esteem but he also didn't have enough of it to really propel himself forward. He felt the usual and harrowing anxieties when trying new things, always concerned that he was going to mess up in some way and have no way of fixing things. It was ironic that an optimist could worry so much when it came to his own life and experiences but he couldn't help that he didn't have much of them. He was still very much a greenhorn in the world. A lot of people had experienced death and tragedy—all Ashton had to speak of was a lot of crash-and-burn romance. Still, even though he couldn't share her ambition he did respect and even admire it. "Do you know a lot of people in your element? That helps." His tone was thoughtful and expression serious. "I wish I had more advice to give but really my election was random. I stood in for a while and just took over when our old hand didn't come back." Ashton shrugged and offered an apologetic grin. He knew it wasn't much in terms of helping out but hey, anything counted, right?
Shifting his position slightly, the conversation had taken his mind off the burns until the sudden movement caused a searing pain in his side. A few curse words of which his mother would have been ashamed hissed past his gritted teeth and his eyes watered for a moment before it died down to more of a dull burn as opposed to a searing agony. "Well, that was stupid," he stated with a weak sort of laugh, hoping to inject some humour into the situation and dispel any sort of worry. Damn, did it ever hurt. He was anxious for the waiting list to go down so that he could get it treated but he would never ask for a sooner spot in line. As a leader he likely could have pulled such a favour but he was too selfish. He'd be more likely to do exactly the opposite—had tried to, actually, when offering Aramina his spot on the list. To avoid thinking about the pain he once again grasped the topic of their conversation. "Why do you want to be a leader? I'm honestly interested." He liked being a leader and could understand the want now that he knew what it was like, but surely she had no experience, right?

Aramina couldn't help but blush just a little bit when she began to wonder wither or not she would tell him about her current crush. She knew that he just wanted to know who the guys was and if he knew him at all but it was the fact that the guy didn't even really know about this that was freaking her about a little. "His name is Sebastian, don't know if you know him at all. He is a water." Even though it felt like she didn't really need to tell him that, but it also was the fact that this war was still going on and the fact that if he would have been for any other sides of the current war! Though as soon as he had given her luck she couldn't help but smile. She hoped that something might happen in the future but who knew what could happen. The dance was a whole year away now that no one could know what was going to happen in a whole years time!
As soon as Ashton had asked her why she wanted to be a Leader and that made her really think. She always thought that being a Leader would made her more confident but now that she was older she defiantly had some more things to think about. "I would really like to be able to help people that are in my element and when I think about it, being a Leader would be a good way to be able to help those that are close to me." Even though Aramina did wonder if he liked her response to his question, she was more true to herself with her answer then anything at this point. But it was at this point that she began to wonder what had made him want to be a leader in the first place, just as herself. "What about you?" Ara asked poking his shoulder, "Why did you want to become a leader?"

He thought about it for a moment when Aramina spoke—did he know a Sebastian? Ashton knew a lot of people and so it often took a moment of thinking to correctly place a name to a face. She told him that the boy was a Water elemental and Ash gave an absent nod, glad for the extra information. "I know a couple in Water, I think," he said. "Does the nickname 'Bass' ring a bell?" He remembered having thought it strange that Sebastian's nickname was pronounced like the guitar rather than the fish, which would have made more sense in relation to the name itself, but he always called people by the name they requested. Ashton was just a very compliant and friendly person by nature. This meant that it was easier to take advantage of him as well but as long as it kept his circle of friends large and functional then he'd sacrifice the occasional failure. It still hurt when people like Asha and Nell betrayed the trust he inherently placed in everyone but that never stopped him from trusting the next person that came along with a friendly smile. When would he ever learn?
He tilted his head slightly as he listened to her speak, soaking in the words and listening intently. Listening had always been a strength of his—he would really devote his time and attention to a person if they wanted him too. He was never really spacey or disinterested when it came to his friends, even if the story they were telling him was a little boring. It was the companionship that he sought in a friendship. "That makes sense," he said. "I really hope you make it—seems like you want it for all the right reasons." He gave her a genuine smile, his green eyes light. He was not expecting the question to be flipped around to him but he took it in stride. "I didn't," he replied, ducking his head a little sheepishly. "Or... didn't think about it, really. It just happened. They chose me, so..." He trailed off and shrugged. Then, thinking that this might put across the wrong message, he flailed his hands a bit. "Not that—ack!—I'm complaining! I like being a leader!" He winced, having been cut off momentarily by a gasp of pain. His frantic gesturing had yet again bothered the painful injury on his side.
