For a busy man such as Joshua Dale, a schedule was practically a necessity to assure that he didn't miss anything in his daily life. He might not have had a job but between volunteering at the hospital and medical wing and juggling two majors, he definitely didn't have a lot of time to himself. He embraced this hectic lifestyle with a fervour but it meant having to slot in time for friends wherever possible. In the beginning, when friends had been a definite rarity, this had not been all that difficult. He'd ensured that he didn't get into too much on the weekends apart from studying and he'd invite Lark or Devin over to hang out or watch movies or even walk around the mall if they felt up to it. Now, with a wife and several close friends as well as a number of acquaintances, Joshua's schedule was almost dizzying. He was no social butterfly, he didn't have a vast array of people begging to hang out with him, but it was rare that he had more than one or two trusted people in his life at one time in his high school days. It was an adjustment.
So that was why, upon realising that he had a decent window of time before the study session he'd planned for later in the evening, Joshua pulled out his phone and leaned back into the couch as he scrolled through his small but respected list of contacts. He had already seen his best friends lately—of all his contacts, Lark and Devin were usually the first on his list to get any sort of attention if he had free time. That didn't mean he neglected everyone else, though, as he now purpose tried to find someone he hadn't really hung around with in person for a while. He'd seen everyone at the wedding and had laughed and talked with them all and accepted their congratulations but that was not the same as having some one-on-one time. Oh, Gabby, he thought, stopping as he came across her name in his phone. His lip twitched, the start of a smile. He remembered how they had gone from an awkward and unfriendly tension to the gradual building of a friendship. Why not? He texted her, inviting her to go out for coffee at Tim Hortons if she had the time.
Message sent, Joshua stood up from the couch and exited the living room, grabbing his jacket as he headed out the door. "I'm heading out," he called loudly, his voice echoing through the foyer of the mansion. "I'll be back in an hour or so." He didn't know if anyone was in close enough range to hear him but it was something, at least. The beige jacket was familiar and reminded him of his wife, for she had been with him when he'd purchased it. Josh avoided heavier clothing at most costs, hating the thick and stifling feeling of winter clothes (especially as a Fire that could simply adjust the temperature at will) but in an effort to appear at least slightly sane in society he decided it couldn't hurt to bring one, even if he took it off the moment he entered the door of the cafe.
Which was exactly what he did.
After ordering an extra large coffee and a box of donuts (his "usual"), Joshua found a table and draped the offending jacket over the back of his chair, sitting down to wait for his company to arrive. He was in a good mood and so he appeared relaxed as he settled back into the chair and sipped at the scalding coffee. Yet another perk of being a Fire was not having to wait for the damn thing to cool off!

Click-clack That was the sound of her keyboard as she typed her essay on her laptop. It's not due for a while but she wanted to get a head start and she doesn't want to end up falling behind on anything this year, especially her junio year. She's going to have to think about graduate schools soon, and she does have a choice but she's starting to waver from it. The girl has never studied abroad and she wants to try doing that but her mother is just too paranoid about her living so far away from home. Gabriella is trying her best to convince her mother if she can study in Washington state. It's just across the border, and she can drive back up if she wanted to visit, or her mother can drive down if she wanted to see her. Transportation now a days is way better than the transportation when her mother was young. Her brother is convinced that she can study abroad on her own. Gabi may not look strong or street smart but she knows how to take care of herself, the only thing is that she needs to hide her elemental powers from the people around her, she can definitely do that. If her mother actually lets her go, where will she practice? Gabi shook her head slightly I'll think about that later. Now concentrate on this essay. Gabi thought as she turned her attention back to her work.
The twenty year old sighed as she leaned back on her chair, laced her fingers together and stretched her arms out in front of her. She's been sitting the library for who knows how long. She glances at her watch, and sees that she's been in the library for at least two hours. Gabriella let out another sigh as she looked out the window to find that the day is still nice just a bit gloomier than she expected it to be today. The girl slumped in her chair as she looked at her white screen with a bunch of words and the cursor blinking at where she stopped. I haven't talked to any of my friends in so long. She thought as she stared out the window yearning to go outside with one of her friends at least. Well if none of her friends are free she can at least go out and walk in the fresh air. Yeah, I think I'll do that for an hour or so. She smiled at the thought and started saving her work, closing the window and shutting down her laptop before putting it into her backpack. The girl took out her wallet and grabbed the two books she decided to borrow for her research paper. "Thank you, have a nice day." She said to the librarian before stepping out with her books.
When she stepped out of the library she put the books into her bag, and hoisted it onto her back. They were heavier than she anticipated but she'll deal with it, she does need to build some muscles after all. Gabi walked out into the crisp cold air, she took in a deep breath and pulled on her gloves. It was nice to be outside after being in the library for so long, she needs this fresh air to keep her alive. The girl smiled to herself as she buttoned up her jacket and just continued walking down the street with a joyful step, she's too happy about giving herself a break, but she doesn't care what people think. Gabi stopped for a red light, and she felt her phone vibrate in her pocket. No one has been texting me lately, I wonder who it is. Gabi thought as she took out her phone.
The text was from Josh.
She opened it and saw that Josh asked if she wanted to have a cup of coffee with him. Of course she replied with a simple yes and a smiley face. Her friendship with Josh has grown quite a lot since the first time they met. Both of them realized that they were on the same path, and Gabi was a bit tense around him before because after all he is a fire elemental and she's water. They're like complete opposites yet they are getting along quite well. She even remembers the beautiful wedding that he and Nell had. It does make her wonder when she will be married. The girl made a turn to Tim Hortons, it was only a few blocks away from where she's standing she might as well go and enjoy a cup of warm tea in this weather. Gabriella walked into the cafe and found Josh sitting there with a cup of coffee and a box of something she wasn't sure what. She waved as she approached the table. "How are you?" She asked Josh with a smile on her face. The girl sat down across from him before asking, "How are you and Nell?"

At the response to the text he smiled briefly before pocketing the phone, not seeing the point of replying further. They would meet up in Tim Hortons and talk there.
When she approached his table he lifted his chin and offered a smile in greeting, his gray eyes much warmer and demeanour a lot more welcoming than it once would have been. He still remembered the days of awkward tension, how she'd seen him knock the tennis ball through the window and how he hadn't trusted her not to rat him out. Then he remembered discussing their college choices together, remembered talking at the wedding when Joshua couldn't keep the smile off his face, realised how far they'd come. How far we've all come. God, it had been so long since he'd betrayed his element. His life had changed so much since then. "Hello, Gabriella. Were you close by?" He asked due to the relatively short time it had taken her to reach the coffee shop. It benefited them, actually, for it meant that Joshua would not have to replace his coffee five minutes after her arrival.
He had not yet opened his box of donuts but he did so now, taking a jelly donut first but not biting into it right away. Instead he held the powdered good and gestured toward the box with it. "You can have some if you'd like. I don't mind sharing." He usually ended up sharing his donuts whenever he went to Tim Hortons with one of his best (and secret) friends, Skye, so he had grown accustomed to allowing the box to become fair game. Just as long as they didn't touch the jelly donuts. Those were his favourites.
She asked after him, which Josh appreciated. Though things such as these were often considered the necessary pleasantries of conversation it was still good to have a friend express interest in his mood. He might not have enjoyed talking about himself or his past or much of anything at all but the concern was appreciated. "I'm fine," he said, the smile hopefully backing him up. 'I'm fine' was his answer to everything whether he was fine or not but sometimes the answer was in his facial expressions instead. "I got accepted into MHU. Guess who's going to medical school in January?" Though he did not grin like an idiot, squeal, or jump for joy, the delight was evident. It was not as strong as when he'd first opened the letter after returning home from his honeymoon with Nell but it caused a stirring of happiness in his gut whenever he thought about it. This was it, this was his dream falling into place. "I applied for BCU and a couple others as well but they don't start until June and I want to stay close to home so I've already made my choice." He had a wife now and a little sister to take care of, he didn't want to relocate for medical school. It was nice to have the option of staying in his hometown. "Next year it'll be your turn, eh?" She was a year below him but it wasn't long yet.
He and Nell. He liked that, liked how they were asked about together. No longer Joshua and Nell but the Dales, two parts of a whole. Subconsciously he twisted the ring around on his finger as he answered. "We've been great. France was amazing—every bit as breathtaking as they say." Then there had been the issue of Nell getting drunk and making a slip-up in front of a Parasian native but he left that part out for his wife's sake. Embarrassment aside, the rest of the trip had been phenomenal. And it had been a honeymoon. It wasn't just the country that he'd been enjoying. "Then we had a Halloween party when we came back—did you hear about that?" It had been pretty big news around Maple Hollow. News travelled fast in a small city. "It was a lot of work but it was worth it." Even though it had meant wearing an uncomfortably warm and electric blue turtleneck the whole night. The sunglasses had been a plus, as well as the permission to go around making loud references to The Lonely Island. "What about you?" he returned. "How have you been?" He asked after her both out of courtesy and out of genuine interest.

Gabriella set her bag down on the floor, and let it lean on the leg of the table. She was happy that Josh asked her to come out to the cafe. She doesn't really come in here because of the coffee smell. Gabi has never been a fan of coffee, and she has no idea why. It's too bad that she can't manipulate the water in the coffee. "I only had to walk a few blocks." Gabi replied to Josh's question.
When Josh asked if she wanted a doughnut, she gladly accepted his offer. "Thanks I would love some." She said with a smile. The girl grabbed a napkin and opened the box. She looked for a glazed doughnut and took it out from the crowd of doughnuts in there. Gabriella hasn't had a doughnut in a while, so she thought it would be nice to have one. The girl remembered how her parents always bought doughnuts, for her and her brother. She always asked for the glazed one while her brother always asked for a jelly-filled doughnut. It was a monthly thing that her parents did for her and her brother. It's just one of those things she looked foreword to as a kid.
"Congratulations!" Gabi said with a big smile on her face. She's so happy for Josh, and excited for him. She can tell that Josh is happy that he got accepted; he did work hard, and the fact that he's married just shows how committed he is to his new wife, and his academic life. Gabriella can't imagine being married and going to school at the same time. Gabi knows its going to be too much for her to handle. It is possible, because Josh is one example of that. He's the only person she knows that is married and is still going to school. It's crazy how well he manages his time. Gabi has her own schedule and all but she just ends up going with the flow. She needs to learn on managing her time better; especially if she wants to go onto grad school. Gabi nodded when Josh mentioned that it'll be her turn next year, "Yup." Gabi said nodding as she took a bite from her doughnut. She's not really sure on what else to say.
Gabi listened to Josh talk about him and Nell. They are so cute together, and the wedding was beautiful. And she's glad that the two of them had a great honeymoon together in France. Gabriella has never been to Europe; she's only been to Korea, for it is where her grandparents came from. "I've been studying. I have a paper due in about a week or so. I'm almost done just need a few more pages." Gabi replied taking another bite of her doughnut, and then wiping her mouth. "So I came out here for a break." Gabi added with a small smile.

He nodded and took a bite of the donut, feeling no need to give a verbal response. He could tell that the donuts had been made fresh and the warmth of the donut itself was contrasted by the cool jelly. He took a moment to savour the taste before swallowing and offering to share with his friend. While some people wouldn't mind in the least, his mother had always taught him that it was rude to eat in front of your friends. He might not have been the most cheerful or approachable guy but he'd learned his manners from his mother and he tended to remember them.
He could tell that her congratulations were genuine and the smile that touched his lips was one of gratitude. He was so proud of himself for getting accepted into medical school and it felt nice to have others share in the excitement for a moment or two. He was too proud to jump up and down or wave the letter in the air when it had come in the mail but he'd certainly grinned like the Cheshire Cat for hours afterwards. The smile on his face was much less wide now but his happiness was the same. "Did you end up deciding where you want to go?" He remembered talking about college choices with her last year when he'd only been about to enter his senior year. So many important decisions had been made since then. It was weird at times to reflect on the past, realise all the things that changed. He brushed aside the feeling. I don't remember her saying. Perhaps she had and he just didn't recall but Joshua had a fairly sharp memory and so he hoped that it hadn't failed him. His skills in memorization were one of the things he prided himself on. He wasn't a braggart but he did not deny his own skills when he knew they existed. He had an ego, after all. Most did.
Gabriella mentioned studying for a paper and he chuckled, shaking his head. "Sounds fun," he said in a tone that suggested it was probably the opposite. Even academically inclined guys like Josh weren't fond of the grind that tended to occur at the end of the year. Everyone struggled to finish up the last of their projects and papers while also studying for the exams and it was a huge, stress-filled headache until they were released for winter break at last. "Good luck with it, though." His words were genuine and he lapsed into a brief silence to nibble on the edge of another donut. He knew it probably wasn't in his best interest to eat (almost) an entire box of donuts in one sitting but he couldn't help himself sometimes. He loved his sugar.
The subject of school was an easy one for Joshua. He didn't like to talk too much about his personal life, a habit from when everything had been negative and he wanted to avoid the subject, and so school was something he had a strong opinion on and a lot of experiences with. That said, it was fairly easy to segue into further conversation with, "Been studying a lot for the exams? I try to get a few hours in a day, at least." He might have had a brilliant memory and a sharp mind but that didn't mean he wanted to trust all of his marks up to luck. Studying ensured that he reminded himself of all the material he'd learned over the years and that he didn't have an inconvenient lapse in memory when sitting finals. It was the stuff of his nightmares. "Bit hard to believe I'm graduating at the end of the month. I can still remember freshman year." He chuckled, reminiscing. He'd still been very much a Fire back then, never having met Nell Shepherd and making his distaste for all Earths and Waters plain. He was glad there were people like Gabby who could get past all that and treat him like a friend.

The girl shook her head when Josh asked if she decided on where to go for graduate school yet. She's still trying to convince her mom that she can study abroad and come back home to look for a job, but she is not letting it go. Gabi heard that Oregon Health and Science University was one of the best schools, and she has the grades to get into the school, but her mother just won't let it happen. Gabi really needs her brother to convince her. Maybe he can move down with her, but she doubt that's going to happen, because her brother always has something to do. "But I am thinking about studying abroad." Gabi says taking a bite from the doughnut.
Gabriella nodded when Josh commented on how much fun it was to write a paper. "I know they're so much fun." She said adding onto the sarcasm. It's not that she doesn't like writing, it's just she also needs to study for her other classes. It can be stressful. Gabi has gotten sick a few times just because of the stress that school came with. She's also still getting some pressure from her mom to continue doing well in school. Gabriella is just hoping that she won't get sick this term, but winter is approaching soon, and that's usually around the time that she catches a cold. I should take some vitamin C later. Gabi thought to herself as she took another bite of the warm doughnut. "Thanks, I'll need it." The girl said in response to Josh's good luck wish.
Silence fell between the two and Gabi took another bite off of her doughnut. The doughnut has cooled off quite a bit so it's not as warm as Gabi would like it to be but it's okay. She was getting a bit tired from studying so much in the library, she needs the sugar to keep her awake for another session. "Yeah, I have. It's quite tiring." Gabi said taking another bite from her doughnut, she wants to finish it before it starts getting really cold. She's about half way done at least. "You need only a few hours? I need more than that." Gabriella said.

When Gabriella spoke of studying abroad, Joshua was reminded of his younger days when he had still held fantasies of Harvard's medical school in his mind. It was Ivy League, it was prestigious, it was the very picture of success to an eight year old that wanted to be the very best doctor that he could be. That dream had stuck, too, until recent years when family and friends had started to anchor him to Maple Hollow. Now he had a reason to stay. His lip twitched at the memories. "Ah, I used to think about that myself," he admitted. "Didn't have the heart to leave in the end. I grew up here, Maple Hollow's all I've known." It was partial lie, partial truth. If anyone wanted the real reason he was not applying to schools like Harvard and McGill they'd need to figure it out on their own. He did not like to discuss himself and his life too in depth. It was not that he did not trust Gabriella (or any of his other friends, for that matter) it was more that he'd developed a habit over the years of not revealing a whole lot of personal information.
To divert the topic away from his own ditched plans to study away from home, he asked, "Did you have a specific place in mind?" Some liked to study abroad in Europe but he didn't see the appeal as they did. He was happy in Canada and his only desire to study in America would be to gain the sort of bragging rights that prestigious schools like Harvard gifted their students with.
After a brief silence during which they both sipped their drinks and ate their sweets, the talk shifted from medical school to studying and Joshua nodded sympathetically when Gabi mentioned the drain that studying had on her. "This time of year is always hard. I'm glad we've got the break afterwards, to be honest." As driven and intelligent as he was, Josh did not know if he could handle going straight from the stress of finals into a whole new year of fresh material, or in his case, the first year of medical school. He'd heard that it was tough and he was looking forward to a month of rest and recuperation before he was tossed back into the academic fray. "I try to put in some extra hours on the weekend but I generally pace myself. A few hours each day and I'm not brain dead by the end of the week." He chuckled, being a slight bit modest with his answer. In truth it was intelligence and skills in retention that let him off the hook. He did not have to study until his eyes closed on themselves in order to pass a test.
Finishing off the donut that he'd been working away at, Joshua wiped his fingertips on a napkin and washed it all down with a long sip of coffee. The drink really had been an acquired taste—acquired during long nights staying up late to study or proof-read assignments that were not due for days. He was diligent, a hard worker. It was his system, his way of doing things. It did not work for everyone but it worked for Joshua. He yawned, more of a reflex than any sign of exhaustion, and set his drink down before asking, "Do you have plans for the break? I've barely gotten anything done for Christmas... damn exams have taken a lot out of me." He'd have a lot of shopping to do over the holidays, he could see it now.

Gabi is not letting go of the idea of studying abroad, while her mother is not letting her go so far from home. She did think of staying close to home, but Gabriella doesn't see the benefit in that. Gabi wants to study somewhere different. She loves Maple Hollow and all, but she does want to visit other places, other than Korea. The girl smiled when Josh said he thought of doing that, too. But he decided to stay. The reason he said he stayed was because this town was all he knew. Gabi thinks it's another reason. "Ah, I see." Gabi said nodding her head. "I love Maple Hollow, but I want to explore the world a bit more." Gabriella added as she wiped her mouth after finishing her doughnut.
Gabi was about to ask Josh another question, but he beat her to it. "Oregon Health and Science University, it's not too far." She said with a hint of excitement. She has looked at their website everyday ever since she has heard about it. Gabi even showed her mom, but that thought of her only daughter going to another country to study terrifies her. She doesn't know why it terrifies her so much. Gabi can fend for herself. She knows she can't use her powers, but she knows some self-defense. Maybe she should talk to her mom, more to see where this fear is coming from. Then hopefully they will come to an agreement to let her go.
She lifted her cup and took a sip of her drink. The warmth filled her up and relieved some of the stress that she felt just thinking about her mom. She should arrange a meeting with her mother soon. "Agreed" The girl said as she stretched. She is a bit tired from sitting all day. "Oh, that's a good idea, but I still need more than just a few hours." Gabi admitted. She needs those hours of studying because that's how she obtains her best results. If she doesn't add those hours, she is not going to end up with the grade that she wants or needs.
"I'm just going to spend time with my family. Some are coming from Korea just for the holidays." Gabi said with a smile. She was so excited to see her relatives . She hasn't seen them in so long. She missed all her cousins, uncles, and aunts who live in Korea. "The exams have taken a lot out of all of us." The girl said agreeing with Josh. She hasn't been able to do any shopping for her younger cousins. She can make something, but that's giong to take longer than buying something.

He supposed he should count himself lucky. Being from a rich family who did not hold back in allowing him to do whatever he wanted, Josh knew that he was free to travel the world whenever he liked. He'd been to Ireland with his father and both Spain and France with his wife. He'd been to many parts of Canada with his family over the years. He was anchored here, now, and he knew that he'd prefer it to stay that way. "Makes sense." I think a lot of people want that, in the end, he thought to himself. The world was a big place and when you'd only seen the small area in which you lived it seemed larger still. He wanted to travel more as well but he knew he'd have all the years ahead of him for that. He could travel with kids if they had them, with Nell alone if they didn't. His future was a secure and comforting thought to Josh. It held no fear.
Detecting the excitement in her voice, Joshua's lip twitched fondly. It was nice to see his friends pumped for something and he wondered if they felt the same when he went into spiels about biology and history or whatever else took his fancy at that point in time. "I've heard of it," he said. He didn't know a whole lot about the school, admittedly, but he had heard the name before. "Well, good luck!" He wondered if it was considered a good school to attend. Then again, MHU doesn't have the strongest reputation. Maple Hollow was so out of the way and hidden that its schools probably didn't get the least bit of public coverage. They offered schools for almost anything, though, because they were a self-sustaining community that wanted to attract as many elementals as possible. They were mortal beings with immune systems that could get sick and injured just as anyone else and so Maple Hollow needed to train doctors.
Everyone functioned differently when it came to their studies. Josh knew enough to be aware of that. Sometimes those habits had to change, too, to adjust to a new form of schooling. He knew a guy that had breezed through high school without the need for studying before getting a cold wake up call with the college workload. Joshua, who had studied throughout all of his schooling regardless of whether he could recall the information on the spot or not, had never needed that period of adjustment. His work ethic was his key to success. "Hey, whatever works for you, y'know?" He didn't want to give of an impression of being better than anyone. He needed to study a little harder for subjects that he wasn't as invested in, for sure. He'd breezed through Math because it was all about following instructions. He'd done brilliantly at History and Biology because they were his passions. However, much as he liked reading, English had never truly interested him. He didn't care much for analysing poetry or plays. So he'd been much more careful around those subjects.
Family was what mattered most during the holidays, that's what his parents had always taught him. He offered a small smile. "Oh, well that's good, eh? Always nice to have your family around." He knew what it was like to have family separated, though admittedly not by oceans and entire countries. "I figure my family might come down from Nova Scotia, though I haven't heard anything of their plans." His mother's family had fulfilled their dream of living on the eastern island when Patricia had came into her wealth and started making the sort of money that she did. His mother also paid for the necessary plane tickets for her parents to fly out during special occasions. "Tell me about it," he laughed in agreement. "Here's hoping for the best. You think you'll do well?" He was fairly confident in himself but then, Josh was a confident guy.
