Irritated and confused were the two emotions that usually started Laney into a sneaky hate spiral. Add on pain from the major burn on her hand and you had one angry girl on your hands. For the most part, she had thought she was doing well with her training. She had finally managed to manipulate the flame on a small candle and bend it around a bit, enlarging it and so forth. Nothing special, but it was a whole lot better than where she was at before she was sent to the Academy. Her dad had taught her the basics and that was about it. She knew about the different elements and their alliances and who she could and couldn’t be friends with. Her father had given her a zippo to carry around with her everywhere so she was never without flame, but as for controlling it and manipulating said flame, that was null and void.
Cradling her burnt hand close to her chest, Laney made her way through the castle and toward the hospital wing. Having been practicing day and night, her brain was just a bit on the exhausted side. She hadn’t wanted to quit though, knowing she was behind pissed her off even more. Damnit, she needed a better plan, or maybe even a tutor. Hell, maybe even two tutors. Or three. Whatever it took to catch up and make her father proud. She still couldn’t believe she blew up a candle just trying to put the flame out. Talk about totally opposite ideas. She grimaced at the thought. If she didn’t stop thinking about it soon, she would just make herself angrier and controlling anything after that would be highly unlikely.
Walking in through the door, Laney smiled meekly at the person behind the desk. ”I, uhm, have a burn I need taken care of… I ran it under cold water, but it didn’t help much…”

The day was drawing to a close and the pace had slowed considerably in the medical wing, leading to a comfortable sort of repetition as Joshua helped the rest of the staff deal with the few cases that were still coming in. There was a boy with a bad electrical burn that Josh sent on to someone a little more specialized and then a freshman who'd found out the hard way why their classmates had spent an entire year warning them away from the dungeons. He liked how easily his element responded to him now when he attempted to heal things with his powers. In the beginning, back when he'd only been a college freshman and everything was new to him, he'd been stuck learning by shadowing a much more experienced member of the staff. Now they usually left him on his own, confident that he wasn't accidentally going to cause damage instead of fixing it.
They also didn't say anything about Nell's frequent presence in the wing, hanging around and keeping him company when she didn't have classes or anything better to do. He often joked around and asked her if she didn't get sick of the place with the amount of time she was there between injuries and innocent drop-ins. He appreciated her presence, though, and far from distracting him it actually helped him to resist strangling a good deal of the patients who rubbed him the wrong way. "Are we heading home right after or did you have something you wanted to do first?" He looked up from where he was organizing the daily records to where his wife was perched on the counter. They technically weren't supposed to be sitting on the furniture but rules were made to be broken and so he treated it as if it were completely normal.
Outside of the room they currently occupied, the receptionist smiled at Laney when she approached the desk. "A burn, hm? Tough luck. Just a second!" She looked over a list of who was working in the wing and who was free, settling on a name and then turning back to Laney. "If you just head down that hall there, someone in room three can help you!"
The third room happened to be the one that Joshua and Nell were currently in. The Fire graduate turned his attention to the door (which he had left open to signify that it was free) when he saw movement from the corner of his eye. Not knowing that she was from the enemy alliance and forced not to discriminate either way, he offered a smile. "Hey there. A burn I'm guessing?" It was the majority of what he dealt with in the medical wing even though he was able to handle cuts and sprains as well. He left the medical records alone for the time being and decided it was best to introduce himself and explain the situation. "Name's Josh. This is my wife, Nell." Though he introduced her so casually, he felt a pulse of pride at the word wife. He liked that, their connection. The ring on his finger was rarely removed. "I'm the one who'll be helping you out, though. Can I take a look?" He always needed to know what he was dealing with, after all.

Nell greatly preferred being in the medical wing to visit her husband, rather than being the patient. Unfortunately, it so happened that she got sent there a lot more than she would have liked. Today, however, she had dropped by to wait for him to finish up for the day. Her classes had been finished, and she was free of any immediate homework that needed completion. Plus, it was fun watching Josh treat people. She had told him before, but she really admired the fact that he wanted to become a doctor. However she didn't exactly tell him some of the reasons, like the fact that helping people was a wonderful thing to work toward. A desire to become a doctor was something to admire in general, though, something that many children say they wanted to be when they grew up, alongside president of the free world and an astronaut. It rarely happened for a lot of kids, but it was going to happen for Josh. Nothing would stop him from graduating medical school, or at least that's what she believed. He worked hard for this, and she was with him for every step of the way. As his wife, no less. She took a lot of pride in that, enjoyed not just being a wife but being Joshua Dale's wife.
While she waited, she had plopped herself up on a counter, looking around for things she could play around with. She tried her best not to be a nuisance. She was sure the moment she started knocking equipment over she would be sent somewhere else like a pet that misbehaved. Instead, she took out some of the paper from her notebook and spent time folding origami frogs. Josh looked up from his work and questioned her about having. anything to do first. She tilted her head for a moment, trying to think if there was anything she needed, but she shook her head in the end. "Nope, I think we can go straight home," she told him, folding a leg for the frog. "Unless I'm forgetting something...we do have food, right?" That's the only thing she could think of, but they usually had a well-stocked fridge. Because this was the Dale residence, no one went hungry in the Dale residence.
A girl walked in, and she looked pretty young, making her immediately adorable in Nell's eyes. Her arm was cradled against her and it didn't dawn on her yet that she had been burned. Josh introduced himself, and then her, and she felt her stomach flip when he used the word wife. She smiled brightly and waggled her fingers at the injured girl. "Hi, I'm Nell," she said airily. When Josh went to check out the burn, Nell leaned over a bit so she could try and get a better look too see it. Her eyes widened in sympathy when she did. "Ohhh, how in the world did that happen?" she questioned, sympathy tight in her voice. She looked a lot like a child who'd first discovered an earth worm and couldn't believe something like that existed in her backyard. "Does it hurt real bad?" So much for blending in with the background and not getting in the way of anything. Nell couldn't help it, she worried about people.

Come on, come on, come on. This is reeeeallly starting to hurt now. Laney’s eyes fallowed the receptionist’s down to what was apparently a chart. Yes, super tough luck, now can you fix it or not? One of her soft brown eyes started to well up with a tear as she waited. She wasn’t exactly a pro when it came to pain. She learned to keep her mouth shut when being beat while at one of her foster homes, but she couldn’t make the tears stop. Perhaps it was just her body’s way of trying to cope with the pain or maybe she was just a pansy. Either way, she learned to deal with it and that was that. Using her good hand, she brushed away the tear that had finally made it’s way over the ledge of her lower eye lid. Snapping her head up to meet the eyes of the receptionist, Laney nodded her head, ”Room three.” And with that, she all but ran down the hall to the room with the open door.
Making her way through the door way, she stopped short. Why were there two people in there? Was she in the wrong room? Had she just intruded on someone else being helped? What game was the lady playing at for sending her in there? Laney frowned, brushing another tear from her pale cheek. She was just about to turn and walk out when the man started talking to her. A burn? Oh, right. Laney nodded, holding both of her hands near her chest, her burned one cradled in the other. She looked between the two, now that he had introduced both himself and the woman. Josh and Nell… Alright, not too difficult to remember. Upon being asked if he could see the wound, she hesitated, but held out her hand toward him, palm up. ”Uhm.. yeah…” It was beat red and starting to blister. ”I’m Laney..”
Laney’s dark brown eyes snapped up toward Nell as she began talking to her. She swallowed and frowned slightly. What exactly was she going to say? I’m a moron that can’t get a grasp on my own bloody element and it back fired enough to burn my hand. Sighing, she looked down toward the ground and wiped another tear from her cheek, ”I was practicing my element and it… sort of back fired. I wanted to put it out, but it… exploded instead… I just want to be good at it… and I keep failing.”
She let out another sigh before nodding her head at Nell, ”Yeah… I tried cold water but that didn’t do a stupid thing.”[/blockquote][/blockquote]

His brow furrowed as he tried to picture the inside of the fridge the last time that he'd open it. It took several seconds to go over what they had and what they might need but he was fairly satisfied his recollection skills were not crapping out on him. "I think we're doing all right for food but we could swing by Metro on our way home, pick up some extras." The upside of being rich was that you could live on your whims. Feeling like steak? You could head to the store and buy it, no strings attached. Run out of milk? Just replace it. "What are we having tonight, got anything in mind?" He was already hungry just thinking about food. His wife was a brilliant cook in his biased opinion and he was pretty sure he could eat anything she made. Including meat-based meals, now that she'd corrupted him.
Whoever the girl was, the tear that she brushed away made it obvious that she was in pain. It was not surprising, nor was it the first time that he'd seen someone crying in the medical wing. For someone that got incredibly awkward when friends and strangers held weep-a-thons around him, he was surprisingly calm about it in the medical wing. He attributed it to the fact that it was relatively obvious why they were upset and so there was no need for awkward questions or patting on the back. Instead he helped them out to the best of his abilities and usually the tears went away with the pain. It helped him stay neutral.
The girl held out her burned hand and introduced herself. Nell took over the talking as Joshua's gray eyes swept the injury, critical and analysing. "How long's it been since you burnt it? The sooner I can reverse the damage, the better it'll heal." There were people who came in several days after they injured themselves and by that time it was too late to fix a lot of things quickly. The body often healed on its own but elemental healing meant any chances of scarring were minimized and who wanted scars? He took Laney's hand in his for a moment to inspect the burn, though he was careful not to cause her too much pain.
Ah, she's a Fire. The wariness was instant but Joshua forced himself not to react to the news. The medical wing was meant to be a place of neutrality where the staff treated each and every student like a patient and not like an elemental of whatever affiliation they were lumped under. So he strove to do the same with Laney. She was not a Fire, was not his enemy—but she is—and he was going to help her. "It doesn't look too bad," he assured Laney. "With any luck you won't be even to tell it was there at all in a couple of days." He loved the way his powers could reverse the damage so wholly and completely now. In the beginning he'd only been able to start the process and then step aside for a senior member of the medical faculty to handle things but now he was near-graduated, mere years from reaching the peak of his capabilities. It was an empowering feeling.
His lip twitched almost sympathetically. "It does a bit, actually, but you've got to keep it under the water for a while for it to really do any good and it's best that it's cool and not freezing. It helps with swelling." He shook his head. "Not that it matters much. I can do a lot more than the tap can." His tone was light, almost suggesting humour, but he did not laugh or even smile. Nodding toward the bed in the room, he suggested, "You might want to take a seat—it won't take long, only a few minutes, but it's still better to get comfortable." It would be impractical for her to stand the entire time he was trying to heal the burn.

Nell figured that it wouldn't hurt to go get some stuff from the store, but she was trying to remember if they needed anymore of the little things. "Sounds good. Should probably get some more pepper." That was definitely one of the little things that she would probably forget on most trips to the store. He asked if she had any plans, and she tilted her head to think about. "I could make chicken parm. It shouldn't take too long." She wasn't too tired, at least, and was always up for cooking. It required little stress, and she figured that they both would be pretty hungry, along with Annabel. "Unless you want something else...?" She was still unsure about how much she corrupted him and if he would be fine with it.
Nell let Josh take over in his nursing duties. Could she call them doctor duties, even though he wasn't one yet? It was only a matter of time in her mind. Laney was apparently a Fire student, and though that naturally made her nervous, like some Earth instinct she'd been born with, she was still empathetic as she would be with anyone who came in injured. People being hurt were bad, and she did not like to see that happen, so it was natural that she felt a sadness at the fact that this girl got a burn on her hand.
After Josh told Laney she might want to sit, Nell piped up. "Don't worry, you'll get better with your element!" she chirped with the certainty only an optimist of her intensity could have. "But try not to make things explode from now on, because those are bad. I mean, I once exploded a souffle...huge mess, chocolate all over." That sounded a lot better than it had actually been. And it had been frightening, as a matter of fact, considering that she hadn't even supposed to be in the room at that time. At least she wasn't tagging the chalkboard, instead making a delicious dessert. At least, it would have been delicious had it not ended up on the walls of the classroom. "What grade did you say you were in?" she questioned, moving the subject off of her botched recipes and rambling.

The fact that Josh and Nell were having a side conversation about dinner had her slightly angered. She was standing there with a large burn on her hand, in quite a bit of pain and they were worried about chicken parm? Laney narrowed her brow and kept her mouth shut, her lips in a tight line to prevent her from saying anything wrong. Could she honestly blame them though? They were a young married couple, what else would they talk about? Not to mention the fact that she was just a patient, one of many she would assume. She wiped another tear from her cheek and looked at Josh as he began talking to her again. ”Uhm… About twenty minutes ago? Thirty, max. As soon as it happened I did the water thing, and when that wasn’t doing helping I came straight here.” She swallowed and looked at him, hoping she hadn’t done anything wrong.
When he began talking again, Laney nodded her head and made sure to keep that little bit of advice tucked away. Cool, not freezing water, for a few more minutes and that should help. That was a nice bit of information to keep handy actually, especially since burns were probably going to be a lot more common that she would like. ”Thanks, Josh…” She did as she was told and sat down in the appointed chair. Getting comfortable, she looked over at Nell and nodded her head. ”I seem to just have everything backwords… I want a bigger flame, it goes out. I don’t want a flame, it explodes.” She shrugged and glanced down at her lap. Upon being asked what grade she was in, she felt a bit embarrassed. ”I’m in tenth… when it comes to school subjects I’m just fine, excelling, actually. But my element… I wouldn’t stand a chance against a fourteen year old…”
She wiped another tear from her cheek and shook her head, trying to shake the uneasy feeling that came with her answer to Nell. She frowned slightly, finally understanding why Josh and Nell’s name sounded so familiar. ”I don’t want to intrude on anything… but uhm, are you two, thee Josh and Nell? I think my dad has talked about you… If you’re the right ones.”[/blockquote][/blockquote]
