Just Before Sunrise The Lakefront
Stroke. Stroke.
Crystal let the familiar hug of her element flood over her as she pushed her way through the water. When asked why she got up at "ungodly" hours of the morning simply to swim, she usually answered with a, "I like to keep fit.
[/b]" but really she just liked the quiet, most of the students had finished partying by this point and realized they needed at least one hour of sleep before classes started. That was the reason she was here, to see the castle at it's most peaceful state. There was no one practicing their abilities by the waterside so the water was calm and best of all no students to comment on seeing their guidance councilor in a bikini swimming laps in the moonlight. She tried not to think exactly how cliche it was to be hiding out in the moonlight swimming but she at least didn't find anyone at the bottom of the lake so it was a good day. Stroke. Stroke. She could see her hair floating up around her, it had always entertained her how it bounced up around her as she swam. Everything always seemed to have a new life in the water, she knew it wasn't that the water had magical properties but it still put everything into perspective. She was able to think about what was happening in the lives of everyone around her. She never actually thought much about her own life - that would require her to have one - she just wanted to get her life right the first time. She sighed as she noticed the sun just barely coming up over the horizon. The time for reflection was over, time to get to work, she didn't want to be late for that first straggler to wander up to her door. Students tended to come to her with their problems at all hours of the day, she wished she could be everywhere but sadly no, she was not that skilled. She pushed up to the shore revealing a body of someone much younger, but the eyes of someone who had worried far to much. She pulled the water off her body and sent it back to the lake before donning her baggy shirt just to wear back to her office to change into something more professional. She kept more work clothes there then she would care to admit having spent many a night in her office working. She was glad she at least had a comfortable couch in her office to crash in when the need arose. It was only then that she thought she heard movement somewhere around her. Who else would be up at this hour?[/size][/blockquote][/justify][/blockquote][/justify

It was the sort of dusky darkness that preceded the rising of the sun when her car pulled into the sparsely populated parking lot just inside of the Academy gates. She figured that most of the cars would be from early-arrivers like herself or else the students who stayed in the dormitories but lived in Maple Hollow or at least worked there enough to get away with having transportation. The buses that would travel down to Maple Hollow to pick up anyone lacking a ride were parked neatly in a row, their headlights dark and their interiors abandoned. She didn't usually come to school this early. It might be almost creepy if she were the type to be spooked by such things but Rin had always prided herself in being a brave woman.
Besides, there was a reason that she'd arrived during the too-early hours of the morning. That'll be the last time I try to cook when I'm half awake, she thought irritably, closing the car door with a little more force than was necessary. A car alarm going off just outside her building had roused her at an earlier hour than her normal alarm would have and a gnawing hunger had sent her into the kitchen. Half-awake and bleary-eyed, she'd somehow managed to start a small fire in her oven. Smoke alarm assaulting her ears and smoke filling the apartment, she'd managed to put it out herself but had been eager to get the hell out of the place until the open windows had lured the smoke into the fresh air and out of her house. This was why she usually ordered takeout. Ugh. But she'd tried to be responsible last week and had actually bought groceries, which had led to the oh-so-lovely apartment fire. Why did anyone bother cooking?
The faint chill in the air reminded her that the warm summer days were almost over. Instead of following the main path up to the doors, Rin decided to pass some time by taking the more scenic route along the lakeside. She expected to be alone, given the time, and so she paused in suspicion when someone surfaced from the depths of the lake. Water elemental, probably, she thought with a roll of her eyes. She'd never understand their fixation with swimming and the like. She didn't get off on jumping into the centre of a tornado, now did she? The thought amused her for a moment and she resumed walking until she was close enough to recognise the figure. Not a student, as she'd initially thought, but a fellow member of faculty. The orange shade of her hair gave it away fairly quickly. There weren't a lot of redheads in the faculty and so it was hard to miss either one of them walking down a hall. "Crystal," she acknowledged, because she never used surnames or titles. She wasn't a student any more, no matter how uppity some of the professors could get. "The hell are you doing out in a freezing lake in the middle of the night?" All right, so it was hardly the middle of the night, but surely the other woman would get her point.
[Didn't know how well they were supposed to know each other so I kept it vague ;D]

After the initial shock of seeing another living breathing human being just before the sun rose she managed a smile at the drama teacher, and almost grinned when she just greeted her with only a first name, she had expected something like Doc to come out of her mouth and it was a nice surprise to be wrong. "Good, well almost morning to you as well Rin."
[/i] If she wasn't going to be formal Crystal could roll with that. She was just glad that Rin hadn't spotted the tattoo on her hip, there was being unprofessional, and then there was a psychiatrist in a bikini with a tattoo at her place of work. That wouldn't be fun to explain. Then she took on the task of answering Rin's question, she could go with her normal answer but she suspected that her coworker would see right through that answer in a heartbeat. So that left only one course to go with, "This is the only time the place is still." she gestured to the school behind her, letting her eyes pass over all the memories she had created over the years on these grounds, days of troublemaking and skipping class. Somehow on her mediocre grades from high school she managed to pull herself together during college and went on to pass medical school with flying colors. Yet, here she was back at the scene of many a crime. ”It’s also a good place to just think. The freezing water helps with that actually.”[/i] Rin was right, the weather was getting colder very quickly, soon there would be snow to deal with on her morning swims but there was an advantage to being a water elemental. The ice didn’t really bother her much since she tended to create it. Crystal considered it the equivalent to a cold shower in the morning only it really was freezing water. It was just nice to be able to float through the water and take one moment to herself before the chaos of the day started. She took another look at Rin and noticed a few things that most people would have missed. Though instead of a head on approach to asking what was wrong Crystal took the roundabout approach, ”Speaking of middle of the night, what are you doing up at this hour?” With a little digging she might get a straight answer, although that being her job made her a rather good listener. Not many people understood that she actually enjoyed helping others with their lives, but there was not much she could do to change their minds unless they were open minded to the idea. [Friends sounds like a great idea to me ^^][/size][/justify][/blockquote][/blockquote]

She raised her eyebrow. Was she being mocked for her lack of a cheerful greeting? She couldn't tell. It didn't seem like it, at any rate. "Bullshit. You kept your good morning to yourself." Would Crystal pick up on the meaning of the words? Rin wasn't trying to hide the fact that her morning hadn't been quite as enjoyable, not feeling like she had anything to hide. The words were deadpan and without real feeling as Cat flipped her dark red hair behind her shoulder. Her job was bound to put her in a worse mood, it usually did, but she showed up to work each day and did what she was meant to do. She needed the money and so she stuck to the rules.
The redhead looked out across the lake, thinking back to her own high school days when she'd hung out with her friends out by the cliff smoking and skipping class. The lake was clear during classes, too, but of course Crystal was probably holed up in her office playing a good guidance counsellor during these hours just as Rin would be in her classroom. "You're a Water, aren't you? Make waves, kick everyone out. Problem solved." She shrugged, completely serious. Rin could do something very similar and she demonstrated that then, icy eyes narrowing in concentration as a violent gale whipped up around them, sending her hair about her before it slammed into the lake and caused a large, carrying wave that crashed against the cliffs on the far side. "Course you'd need to make sure there weren't any casualties." She smirked. It would definitely hurt to crack your skull open against the cliff. She might have been sadistic but even Rin wouldn't try to kill a student. She didn't have a wish for jail, she was no murderer.
She gave the counsellor a long look as if she'd grown a second and third head right there in front of her. "You're sure you're not the one that needs counselling?" Caterina had never been known for her gentleness in conversation. She was as blunt as a hammer. "Once you lose another couple thousand brain cells you'll be telling me that jumping in lava helps depression." It could be hard to tell whether her offensive comments were made in jest sometimes but she didn't bother to explain. This was Rin, plain and simple.
It was her time to be questioned and she did not pause very long at all before giving her answer. "My oven had a nice shot at impersonating a Fire elemental. Too bad it didn't learn your little tricks as well." She rolled her eyes but looked otherwise unbothered. She wasn't too bummed about the already shitty apartment, she had more of a problem with being here than there most days. Like any human being, though, she hated the acrid taste of smoke and didn't want to die from its inhalation so she'd decided an early trip to work had been order. "Not like I sleep here. Hell no." As she once more lifted a hand to tuck red hair behind her ear this time, the deep green vine that started the tattoo that stretched up her left arm to the shoulder was partially visible. The blouse she wore was enough to cover it and sure enough, as soon as he arm was lowered and the sleeve dropped back down, it was invisible. She wouldn't be judging Crystal for any tattoos, that was for sure.

Just kick everyone out of the lake, that was an interesting concept. Although it would be rather difficult to actually get rid of all the students and have a nice calm time to ponder life for a moment. Although that would probably last for all of three seconds before she was needed elsewhere in the castle to put out some fire. Sometimes she wished she could have the kind of freedom that the students had to go about their lives and just do whatever they wanted to but she knew that no matter what happened she couldn't just let go like she had in the old days. Someone had to make sure the students didn't burn the place down.
She was quickly discovering something about Rin, well once you got past the spiky exterior, she had a wicked sense of humor. Where she got her ideas from, hopefully not experience, Crystal couldn't even fathom. She could almost see where her train of though went and it was nice to be able to just talk to someone without having to write a report on it later. Yes she was friendly with her coworkers but Rin and a few others were barely out of school themselves but it was still nice to be able to just talk to someone. "I'm pretty sure I don't need counseling, although more time of the day would be very nice to help get all my work done."
[/i] At Rin's story she gave an apologetic smile, for being a town when things could get set on fire with a heated argument Maple Hollow could use a much more efficient fire department, or more citizens just needed to help out more when it came to fires. That would make sense but then again everyone had their own lives they needed to live. Who was going to help out with a little thing like putting out their neighbors house. Elementals were almost as bad at humans sometimes. "Well at least it wasn't acting like a thunder elemental. It would not be fun being shocked by your oven every time you touched it." So her sense of humor could use some work. It was early in the morning. At Rin's last comment Crystal let a guilty look creep across her face, "Well sleeping here isn't all that bad... If you can put up with the partying and such."[/i] She didn't mention the pranks and such but that was something every student knew about.[/justify][/blockquote][/blockquote][/size]

More time in the day? Rin could almost agree with that, if not for the fact that it was for an entirely different reason. "I'd take less hours here any day of the week." She did not try to hide the fact that teaching was not her one true calling, didn't try to disguise that her feelings toward it were less than affectionate. At the same time, she didn't complain endlessly for she knew that she would not be quitting her job any time soon. She would need to repeat her last two years of college if she wanted to graduate and while she'd considered it many times, that wouldn't be possible without money. Money didn't grow on trees, it arrived in the form of the paychecks she got from work. And so she stayed with the hope that maybe, one day, she'd find something better for herself.
She'd been told several times that she'd make a damn good Fire, though she'd also been told the same about the Thunder element thanks to her vindictive streak and the fact that she often judged people by first impressions like books by their covers. If she didn't get enough of an impression the first time she'd met a person then she'd leave her judgements for the next time but those judgements would certainly be made. Crystal had initially struck her as the goody-two-shoes type (to be fair, she thought the same of most of the staff that dedicated their jobs to helping the students) and it had taken a while for her to shrug off that initial assumption. Now she saw her as a coworker and someone who could stand her sense of humour, something she always respected. Not a lot of people appreciated it or understood it and so she liked having those few that didn't run after a couple of seconds in her company.
She made a sound of amusement in her throat that was neither a laugh or a scoff, shaking her head. "You know, I wouldn't be surprised, the amount of problems I've had with that thing." She didn't have the best of luck in the world, something she'd long since accepted as fact. Her mother was dead, her father was nuts, she'd flunked out of college, she hated her job, what was a little oven-hatred on top of everything else? "It's broke about three times since I moved into the damn place and the landlord's a little shitbag that doesn't do fuck all unless you're willing to practically beat down his door." She flashed a brief, almost malicious smile. "Which I was, of course." He didn't like her very much but she didn't give two shits what he thought of her so long as he fixed anything that was broken and she had a roof over her head. He'd looked for reasons to kick her out before but as irresponsible as she may have seemed, Rin paid all her bills on time and she didn't usually cause any damage to the unit. The fire hadn't even done much, just scorched the wall beside the oven and part of the hood. No doubt he'd try again with that as his main point.
She raised both brows at her coworker. "Shit, you don't know the next thing about me, do you?" It amused but did not really surprise her. Rin was quite open about her life and personality barring her past but she and Crystal could hardly be considered the best of best friends. They were more like friendly acquaintances at this point and so she supposed there was much to learn. "Trust me, I can do more than handle them. But are you suggesting you sleep here? Why the fuck would you wanna do that?" She paused briefly to consider whether or not she should be filtering herself a bit more and then decided against it. Crystal wasn't a student or a supervisor. If the other woman reported her it just meant she was a whiny bitch. In Rin's mind, at least.
