"Ain't gonna change a thing." She continued to glare at him, then sniffed. "You can let me go now. I don't plan to run." When he continued to look unconvinced, she rolled her eyes. "Like I'd get very far."
Which was true because Rory could not run to save her life. He laughed at that and released his vise-like grip on her arm. She threw him a reproachful look and moved her hand to massage the spot, and then grimaced because that was the hand she was not supposed to move. "Ahh... bollocks. Fuck. That hurt." Tony's expression was one of triumph at that and she could not resist sticking out her tongue at him. "I'm supposed to admit that you were right, aye? Oh great master of foresight?" He grinned. "Something along those lines. Although, a simple thank-you would suffice. One does wonder how you manage these things... you tripped on - what was it?" She scowled, quite sure that Tony had not forgotten as he was not one to forget things so easily. He was doing it just to wind her up. "A... uhm... tree. Like... log. Thing.""You said it was a twig just a minute ago.""You prat. A branch, then.""Alright. Deal." She laughed a little at that. Tony was always a laugh to have around. What had happened was that she did manage to injure herself in ways that amused her friends. She had tripped on a perfectly flat piece of ground, and upon trying to protect her face, had managed to twist her right wrist. It was now bent at an odd angle. Robin had been with her, and he made a huge fuss about it. Robin was a little squeamish by nature and tended to panic when other people got hurt. She had successfully managed to shake Robin off by assuring him that it wasn't as bad as it looked and that it could heal by itself. But by the time she'd been trying to copy down some notes for biology in the common room, Tony caught her wincing and grimacing one too many times and threatened to drag her to the medical wing. She had indeed let him drag her all the way out of the common room, but Tony stopped at the foot of the stairs and said quite seriously that he would not hesitate to carry her if she continued to be so difficult. Now, Rory did have pride. "You wouldn't." "Try me." "Christ, Tony. Alright, fine, I'll come quietly."And that's how they got the door leading into the medical wing. She paused and turned to face him. "Mission accomplished, Tony. Now you can leave." He smirked and reached over to wrench open the door. She sighed, but threw him a smile over her shoulder. "Thanks, love. You had better go and calm down Robin." And with a shake of the head and and amused grin, he left. Sheesh, friends. [/blockquote][/blockquote] strawberry fields forever

He loved the cleanliness of the medical wing. So many people claimed to be perturbed or put off by the sterile hospital smell or the way everything was consistently spotless but to Joshua it all had a very natural feel. He'd grown up with a doctor as a father and he'd tagged along with him to the hospital a few times, finding himself fascinated by his father's work. He loved the cleanliness of the place, loved the quiet. It was a calming environment to the Fire graduate as he washed his hands with the unscented soap and dried them on the crisp white towel hanging next to the back sink of the room. The medical wing of the Academy was perhaps less hospital-like than the real thing with its stone walls and flooring, giving it an almost medieval feel, but it still carried that odour that was not an odour, a scentless smell. He exhaled and rocked back on his heels slightly as he glanced around the room, caressing a train of thought in an attempt to figure out what he should be doing next. After only a brief pause he deduced that he had enough time to perhaps see another patient before he would call it a night and head home to Nell and Annabel, as well as to the Biology assignment he had to work on. With his real job a thing of the past, he found time to be a much easier thing to manage.
The waiting room was not too crowded today, much to the relief of all those working there. A large amount of patients to be seen meant a lot more stress and a lot less effectiveness. It was why the doctors and nurses of the Academy were so willing to allow an aspiring doctor such as himself to lend a hand with the little things. A girl with her wrist at an odd angle caught his eye, the sight concerning him. He knew that it was probably a more serious case but in glancing around for a more senior member of the staff he realised that the emptiness of the medical wing could directly be attributed to the fact that everyone was currently busy with a patient. Shit. He already had speculations thanks to the deformity of the wrist that it might be a fracture or a break and that meant that she should probably be seen as soon as possible. He hesitated for a moment longer, made a split-second decision, then approached the girl with a friendly smile. He wasn't big on smiling but if he approached her with his usual, intense expression she might feel intimidated, he figured. "Hey," he greeted. "Guessing you're not being seen by anyone, hm?" It certainly didn't look like any of the rooms were ready to permit her except the one that he'd just made his way out of. "I could take a look if you'd let me. I'm only a volunteer but they wouldn't let me hang around if I wasn't trustworthy." This much was true. He might have been a Fire but he was a decent person overall.
He didn't want to panic her and so he did not start in with all of his speculations right away. He knew that telling someone 'it might be broken' could cause panic if you weren't careful. Maybe she was one of those reasonable, calm souls who did not fly into a fit if they were told some kind of bad news but as he'd never met her before and didn't recognise the face, he had no previous judgements which he could go on. He also didn't know of her element but that was for the best in a place like this. She could be a Thunder or a Fire and he'd still be obligated to treat her and he'd prefer to be able to see a patient without going into an internal rant about them. It was easier that way. Realising that in his 'introduction' he had not actually introduced himself, he gave a bit of a start. "Oh, I'm Josh, by the way." He'd have stuck out his hand in courtesy but it seemed like a cruel joke when one of hers was a bit... disabled at the moment. So he didn't, instead letting the words stand on their own. "I could do a couple tests and all that to get started before one of the doctors are freed up." He trusted the receptionist to send one such doctor along when one became available and she nodded without his having to ask her, being close enough to hear the conversation.
[Figure Virgine can jump in as soon as she finds out Josh is a Fire and freaks or whatever?]

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -LIVING IS EASY WITH EYES CLOSEDit's getting hard to be someone but it all works out- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Ridiculous.
This was ridiculous. She'd gotten badly banged up before, usually due to her own clumsiness and sometimes because some Fire or Thunder student had been hellbent on riling her up. And she was never one to back down from a fight. Her friends tended to roll their eyes and laugh it off with her. Robin had tried to motivate her into going to the medical wing several times, but she managed to brush it off as a nonsensical suggestion every time. So despite her many injuries, this was the first time in her two years of being at the academy, that Rory saw the inside of the medical wing. It was sterile, white, smelled distinctly of antiseptic, and currently a few students were occupying the white plastic chairs pushed back against the wall. She cradled her hand gingerly and looked around, standing awkwardly and feeling altogether out of place. Of course she could walk right back out before anyone noticed her, but Tony would drag her right back up. Perhaps then he'd even stay to make sure she didn't plan a great escape. She shuddered at the thought. He wouldn't let her live that down either.
Some boy with dark hair spotted her. He looked at her with trepidation, if she was not entirely mistaken, but zeroed in on her nonetheless. He looked like a student, definitely not old enough to be a doctor. But then again, in Rory's mind, all doctors were balding old men. She smiled back cheerfully when she guessed that she had, of yet, not been tended to. "Nope. Not yet." She brightened a little. "Good idea! Maybe someone should just take a look at it and give me the okay. It's probably nothing anyway. I was not going to come," she grimaced a little, "but my friend, Tony, insisted."
A lot of people she knew felt uneasy in hospitals. She supposed that people had some kind of fear, or at least an adversity, to medical places. Rory wasn't afraid of hospitals or of doctors. She tended to find doctors rather tiresome, and hoped that she would not be asked any intimidate questions. She did thank her lucky stars that at the very least, it was her wrist and not her ankle or leg that was hurt. It would be inevitable that she'd have to show her leg if the latter were the case. She truly hoped that it would never come to that. Well... the volunteer seemed nice enough. He also didn't make a show of being pompous, or anything. She smiled, apparently quite at ease. "Well, at least that's reassuring."
She looked around at some of the other students who were waiting and then looked back at him. She nodded when he introduced himself. Her wrist was actually hurting quite a bit, but she still refused to believe that it could be anything worse than a sprain. "Oh, cool. I'm Rory!" She grinned. "I'd shake your hand to be polite... but..." she giggled, her left hand still cradling the injured one. She raised her eyebrows a little when he spoke of tests and wrinkled her nose. "That sounds like it will take awfully long. It's pretty cool that you volunteer in the medical wing, by the way. What year are you in?"
[ooh yes. good idea!]

He'd not been scared to approach the girl, no, merely deciding whether or not it would be a good idea for him to see her or whether he should leave everything up to a senior member of the medical staff. He was quite a confident person and didn't fear or worry over a whole lot of things. Only Nell and her well being, his friends, his family. That was more about their health, both mental and physical, than anything else. This was not a problem for him. She did not seem hostile as he approached and he marked this as a good thing. He could handle the attitude of a Thunder or Fire in a working environment but that did not mean that he wanted to.
He did raise an eyebrow when she seemed sure that it was fine, for Joshua himself was thinking in a much different direction. "Yes, it's fine, because your wrist is really meant to look like that." Sarcasm probably wasn't the best way to deal with another person, particularly not if they were injured. Whoops. He simply could not help a mild exasperation. He did not apologise for speaking the way he did, merely said, "You should be glad your friend sent you here. It doesn't look like nothing." He wasn't going to go off into a tangent about all the possibilities because he was not an article on Google, he did not want to tell her about all of the 'could be's and freak her out. Diagnosing oneself online could be a dangerous venture considering a simple headache seemed to point to a brain tumour in some cases. Yeah, it definitely wasn't the most comforting source of information. Joshua thankfully knew quite a bit from years of volunteering at the hospital and studying biology.
She didn't seem too bothered by the whole environment, at least, which was a relief. He did not do well with people crying and he didn't do too great with panic. He could handle it, certainly, he was not incompetent, he just preferred that it be avoided. It was why he knew that in studying to become a physician-scientist he would want to deal with older patients as opposed to pediatrics. Kids, sensibly, tended to freak out when things were wrong with them. They thought they were invincible. She introduced herself as Rory and he nodded, lips twitching when she cracked a bit of a joke and giggled. "Probably best we avoid that," he agreed. If there was indeed a fracture or a break, the motions that came along with a handshake would probably bother the injury a lot more than it already was. He wasn't some sadist who revelled in making others feel pain.
Apparently tests were not something that she looked forward to. Understandable enough, he supposed, but they were a necessary evil in this case. "I could make an educated guess, already have, in fact, but it's much better that I get the facts." There was an x-ray machine in one of the rooms which he was particularly interested in visiting because it would likely prove his theory about a break or fracture of some sort. He did not want to ignorantly diagnose it as something that it was not and so it was always best to be sure. "I'm a senior, college," he replied to her question. Another year of school and he'd be free to go off to medical school and really enjoy himself. He couldn't wait, to be honest, because Joshua was excited to kick-start his real life's dream. Taking Biology as a major helped him learn some things but medical school was the real deal. "You'll consent to an x-ray, yeah?" He phrased it as a question, wanting to be sure. "It could be a break and we'd want to be certain of it, either way." Now he was voicing his opinion.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -LIVING IS EASY WITH EYES CLOSEDit's getting hard to be someone but it all works out- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Maybe some people would have flinched a little. His sarcasm wasn't even masked. It just kind of rolled off Rory. Few things could seriously upset Rory, in fact, she wasn't sure anyone had ever seen her crying. She liked to keep up a constant cheerfulness, one that people either found endearing or annoying. She smiled. "Ohh, no... If it's something real bad, Tony's never going to quit talking. He'll be unbearable! And he's already got such an inflated ego." But she was grinning. Not actually worried about it. In hindsight, the thought of an injured wrist, any worse than a sprain, should have bothered her more. But it was something interesting, something new, something that she hadn't experienced yet... and she really liked to experience everything. Her brother liked to say that Rory would jump off a bridge just to make sure that she really could not, in fact, fly.
"If it is worse than just a sprain, do you think that will count as an excuse not to hand in my biochem assignment tomorrow? I haven't been able to finish it and she gets anger issues," she rambled on, speaking about the teacher now, "and I kind of like my head in place." She could go on for lengths about various teachers. There were a few who she found fantastic, especially those who were able to shape lessons in an exciting way. Teachers who taught in a bland way quickly managed to get Rory to lose interest.
She followed him into a room that turned off from the main corridor. It featured a machine that looked vaguely interesting and the place smelled just as sterile as the corridor and waiting room had. People weren't kidding when they spoke of the almost disturbingly sterile feel of a hospital. "A senior. That's fun. Then you are almost off!" she exclaimed happily, sitting down on the edge of a sickbed. "I'm in eleventh grade, if you care to know. Still got a few more years." At his question she just shrugged. "Sure, why not? Do I get to keep the picture afterwards?"

He looked a mixture of surprised and skeptical when the girl seemed more worried about some guy called 'Tony' than the fact that he'd suggested she might have a more serious injury. After a moment he mentally shrugged it off. Some people were stronger than others and maybe she'd contracted an injury such as this one before. He did not know her history as a patient or even if she had one at all and so he wasn't going to make too many assumptions about her. "Threaten to do the same to him," he suggested dryly. "That might shut him up." He had a rather morbid sense of humour, perhaps because any other kind would not be suitable for working in a hospital. If he didn't learn to shrug some things off easily he would allow his work to get to him and that was never a good thing. Doctors had to be people of inner strength.
He had to resist the urge not to make an immediate comment on biochemistry, being that he was rather passionate about anything involving biology thanks to his major. Instead he held his tongue but felt amused by the way she wanted to use her injury as an excuse not to hand in her assignment. "Well if you've had up until now to do it, I can't see why the teacher would accept it as valid," he pointed out. He'd never had that problem because he was one of those students, the ones that teachers tended to like and peers tended to roll their eyes at and stare incredulously. A model worker. "If it was assigned recently you might get out of it but I can't do the whole note writing thing. Maybe if you ask one of the doctors afterwards." The medical wing could issue pardons of sorts for some of their patients if they truly needed a way to slide under the teachers' radar. A broken or seriously injured wrist was definitely a good excuse not to do any writing if it was not the dominant hand so he figured she might be able to get away with it. "Is she a Fire?" he wondered curiously of her professor, amused by the remark on temper.
His lip twitched at the thought of senior year being classified as 'fun'. "Yeah, if you don't like sleeping." It was sarcastic again, his default personality. He wasn't actually bothered by studying, though, and so it was mostly in jest no matter how serious he may have sounded. "Few more? So you're staying on for college, I'm guessing." A lot of elementals did, mostly because they did not want to part with their power. He'd done it out of convenience mostly. They'd offered him a full scholarship and he wasn't going to turn that down. A lot of people had told him he should have ("You're rich, you should have let it go to someone deserving!") but he was sure he deserved it and so his guilty conscience was practically non-existent. "I don't see why not." They'd probably keep copies themselves but he didn't see the harm in giving her one. It would be an interesting thing to show off to friends. There was a specialist managing the x-ray machine and Josh left that up to him, frowning at the image when it went up several minutes later. "Definitely looks like a break," he mused. "We can fix that up but we'll need to wait for one of the doctors to finish."

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -LIVING IS EASY WITH EYES CLOSEDit's getting hard to be someone but it all works out- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Her brother often found the fact that Rory tended to have such a... blasé attitude towards life worrisome. Injuries that tended to throw most people out of the loop, merely fascinated her. It's not like she tried to injure herself just for laughs, no. Injuries happened and she knew that they would, and she found it a tragic waste of time to harp on over something like a broken bone. Plus, she felt that it was about time that she broke something. Everyone had a story to tell about a broken leg, or broken arm. She distinctly recalled someone going off about a broken small toe.
There was, however, one injury that Rory did not find exciting at all. In fact, she tried hard not to think about it. Occasionally it was dredged up again, usually unintentionally. The mere word was enough to bring back painful memories. She laughed then. "I like the way you think! It probably wouldn't work. I've made threats before."
She made a face at that. Homework was immensely boring and she was one to leave it to the very last moment. "Blimey. You right sound like my brother! And ye seem pretty bright,"
she said brightening. "To get where you are now, ye would have to be. I don't think I'm stupid... nah, no I'm not. I just get distracted. There's so much out there. I don't know what I want... but... well, a lot of things." She wasn't aware that she was talking a rather lot. Especially to a person she'd known for ten minutes, tops. But Rory was naturally a talkative, amiable person and didn't see why she couldn't impose her chatty self on other people. "Ah... 'twas assigned two days ago. I wouldn't normally care that much but she's a dragon. Miserable sense of humor, the old bat." It wasn't as if the question was posed with any malicious intent. And even then, he couldn't know. Still, Rory gave a sudden start. Probably mainly because her mind was elsewhere and the mention of -fire- brought her back, uncomfortably, to reality. She shuddered and then smiled, hoping that he hadn't noticed. Or maybe taken it for a nervous tremor, of pain, or something. Her wrist did hurt something mad. "Uh... yes, she is." Which was even more reason for Rory not to want to cross her. Ever. Now that he put it that way, it got her thinking. She'd always sort of assumed that college would be the only option. It cost money... money that her family sparsely had any of... but it would ensure her a future. With a degree she had a chance at a career. But maybe college wasn't the only option she had. She furrowed her eyebrows. "Oh... well... it always seemed the only option. I have to go to college." She decided there that it still remained the only option. There was no way she wanted to spend the rest of her life off government subsidy, in some miserable district where the crime rate was high and the future looked bleak. No. No. Never. While she sat on the bed, she kicked her legs back and forth, since she couldn't sit completely still, and waited for Joshua to look over her x-ray. She shrugged when the diagnosis was, as she'd assumed, a broken wrist, "ah, alrighty, then. Now the amount of pain makes sense. Soo, Joshua, what element are ye then?" She did not think that he'd be a Fire. They weren't usually the caring types and he seemed like a nice enough person. Plus, volunteering in a medical wing... She smiled. "I'm an Earth, by the way- ohh, my, that's fantastic!" she said in the same breath, when she saw the x-ray scan. [/blockquote][/blockquote] strawberry fields forever

His lip twitched with amusement when she said that she liked the way that he thought. It was nice to find someone with a sense of humour that wouldn't flip their lid and suggest that wishing harm on their friends was the last thing they wanted to do. You'd be hard-pressed to find a lot of people with more loyalty than Joshua and so it was actually insulting when people suggested he was a bad friend in any way. He found humour in things, was all. "Ah, losing it's flavour, eh? Shame." It was no fun when someone became so adapted to you that you couldn't pull one over on them any more. He was not a Water, not obsessed with pranks or anything like that, but he did fancy a nice joke every now and then. It sucked when people merely blinked and rolled their eyes at him. Boring.
Her accent was nice, his favourite, actually. He'd always had a fondness for the Irish accent ever since he'd went there on vacation with his parents years back. New York was pretty high up there too but that was only because of his fiancée. "I like to consider myself as being intelligent, yeah," he said with a bit of an amused smile. He did like when people thought he was bright. He needed his smarts, for one thing, he knew he was smart, but acknowledgement was a good thing. He knew how to take a compliment without being overly modest or too cocky. "You don't strike me as being stupid, no," he agreed with a thoughtful frown. It was hard to tell at first glance but she didn't sound ditzy. "Indecisive?" he guessed.
He knew a lot of people like that, actually, and it baffled him because of how incredibly sure of himself and his future he was. Devin and Nell were both pretty uncommitted in terms of their future. Nell had changed her major a couple of times already, he recalled. He couldn't live his life not knowing, it would bother him, he thought. "I'd say I could sympathize but I already know what I'm doing." He gestured around the medical wing. "Graduating and going into medical school, I'm sure you can guess why." He didn't hang out in the medical wing because he wanted to be a cyclist. Funny thought.
A dragon? The term made him chuckle, though it was no insult to Rory. As he'd thought, the Earth elemental confirmed a moment later that the 'dragon' in question was a Fire elemental. Dragons breath fire, he thought, and for some reason this was very funny to him. He held back further laughter, not wanting Rory to think that he was laughing at her. He had been too preoccupied with thoughts of dragons to notice the shudder that had passed through her at the mention of Fire. If he had, maybe he would have been a bit more careful in the future. "Yeah, they tend to get that way," he agreed. He would know that all too well. He'd calmed down in terms of his temper but it still existed, thank you very much.
He wondered what kind of have to this was. Some people had to because their profession demanded it, like Joshua, others were going because their parents pushed them into it, still others because they felt like they'd get nowhere in life without a degree. It was a shame that some jobs required ridiculous degrees, really. It made sense for doctors, lawyers, psychologists, teachers, but for a simple office job? It didn't make sense to him most of the time. Oh well. He didn't want to work in an office, he wanted to go into the medical field, so it didn't matter to him either way. Not wanting to pry into her reasons for attending college, he said, "Here, or?" Some chose to go outside of the Academy for college, after all.
He liked the way she handled the whole situation. Joshua didn't do so well with crying and panic as he did the level-headed individuals who accepted their injuries without biting his head off in the process or sobbing all over him. She asked his element, very direct, and he did not think to lie to her. He did hear her name herself as an Earth before he got the chance to reply which should have tipped him off but it didn't. "Ah, I'm a Fire," he said without hesitation. "Aligned with your type, though." A lot of people knew he was a traitor but she probably wasn't one of them and so he didn't automatically assume as much.
[EDIT;; So Avery can come after your reply, perhaps?]

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -LIVING IS EASY WITH EYES CLOSEDit's getting hard to be someone but it all works out- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - she said with a short laugh and then deadpanned, "saying 'I'll do you!' loses its effect after a while. The lad does my head in, I swear!" In fact, she threatened Tony and the others several times a day, just as they did with her - though they were all just joking, obviously - so making threats to beat the other up wasn't taken seriously anymore. Not that Rory would ever seriously hurt any of her friends, but she did not think herself too good to smack Robin upside the head when he got annoying. None of the guys treated her 'like a girl', so to speak. She thought that occasionally they forgot that she even was female. They tended to issue their surprise whenever she decided to wear a skirt or a dress. Armando's remark that 'geez, Rory, you've got sexy legs,' had earned him a dictionary to the face. He'd refrained from remarking anything of the sort ever since. She nodded, grinning. "Indecisive seems about right. I just don't think I could settle without having seen everything there is to see beforehand, ye know? What if I miss out? The last thing I want is to be stuck in one place forever, and not having seen nothing." Medical school... huh... and then she blurted out, before thinking first - as was a habit - "but isn't that super expensive? I mean. Sorry. That was not..." probably a bit insensitive. She tended to see things with a price tag. The way some of her friends bought stuff left and right, Tony included, made her think that they'd never had any financial worries at all. She'd never been completely honest with them when it came to her own money issues. It didn't seem right and frankly, she did not want charity. And she did not want pity either. "Sorry." She nodded distractedly at his question. "Yep. There's not much else." She was not about to start lying to herself. There really was no other option. If worst came to worst, if perhaps her father lost his job, then she would not be able to attend college anyway. But she did not like thinking of the worst possible outcome, it only made people miserable and there was no point to it. "Oh..." And the colour drained from her face. Rory prided herself on being rather fearless. Some preferred calling it reckless. But she liked danger. She liked anything out of the ordinary and anything that was just slightly interesting. This though. This was a danger she sought to avoid at all costs. She did well to steer clear of any Fire Elementals. It was bad enough that she had to come into contact with some Fire Elemental teachers, but that was a necessary evil if she did not want to flunk out of a quarter of her classes. She also trusted that teachers wouldn't hurt their students and tried her hardest in lessons taught by Fire Elementals, so as not to ever evoke their short temper. She was afraid of open flames and even lit candles. She could not strike a match and chemistry class was an absolute horror because she refused to stay in class whenever Bunsen burners were employed. Of course it would have to happen today. What was worse, the x-ray technician had left the room, shutting the door behind them, effectively drowning out the noise from the waiting room. She was aware that she was hyperventilating just slightly, and pressed a hand to her mouth, in a fruitless attempt to control the rapidly building panic inside. She knew that it was irrational. Joshua had been nothing but nice. He'd even assured her of his changed alliance. And yet all she could think was that there was no way she could stay in the room. It was stifling and way too small, she realised. Her leg tingled uncomfortably, the way it tended to whenever she thought too much about the incident. It was years back, but she remembered it all the same, in startling detail. And fire hurt. It hurt more than anything she had ever experienced. Oh, God. Oh, God. Oh, God. She should have seen it coming. But how could she have known that this amiable guy was a Fire? She could have lived with him being a Thunder. It was bad, but not as bad. Rory shook her head, more to clear her mind of the numbness she felt, than anything. She felt frozen with fear and yet all she wanted was to go. She cleared her throat and willed herself not to cry. No.She would be damned if she burst into tears. Not in front of him. She would not make herself an easy target. So she looked up and said in as clear a voice as she could, and with considerable shaking, mind. Damnit. "I... I- I think I'll go. I h-have to go. Yes." She stood up to leave. Or rather to bolt for the door. Broken wrist be damned. [ooc: I used to have this crippling fear of fire actually. Bunsen burners were pure hell. xD Oh, it's totally up to you! If you want Josh to have a reaction, you could post a mini post and fetch Avery. Or maybe Avery comes in, or something? I suppose that's up to Virginie. Ah, Avery loved days like these. A nice balance between busy, and well, not so busy, which was rare. Since he became a doctor nurse at the Academy, days either just seemed to be packed full of injured and tortured students, or agonizingly long days where he wouldn't see a scratch. Not that he had anything against his job, he loved it, but there were just some days where Avery just wanted to lie down on the floor and stay there. Granted, he did such things before, but no need to get into details!
"Yeesh! How many times have I told you not to go around looking for fights?" Avery scolded the water in front of him, though rather than 'scolding' it sounded more like 'playful endearment.' Ugh, Avery really needed to fix that. Barely anyone took him seriously! Though more than half of that was his own fault. He couldn't help the overdose of endorphin his brain produced on a daily basis. Seriousness...caused wrinkles. And Avery liked his face void of any trace that indicated he was old and therefore a pedo because of his...flirtatious ways. "You're really bad at this! And I can take care of myself!" the water shot back, his nose scrunching up at Avery's tone, but quickly winced. His face was covered in bruises and scratches, and Avery sighed. The nurse was older now and had grown tolerant of enemy alliances, but that didn't mean he didn't understand the hostile feelings toward them. They were literally drilled into him when he attended the Academy and since he returned, Avery saw that things hadn't really changed. Probably worse, considering the injuries he saw on a daily basis. And so Avery patted the water student on the head, a smirk forming on his lips, and teased, "Obviously not." The water scowled at him, though he smiled shortly after. "Can I go now?" Avery stayed silent, continuing to put band aids where they were necessary, and the water huffed in impatience. The nurse rolled his eyes, flicking the student in the forehead, before nodding once. "Next time I won't let you off so easily!" he called out to the now retreating/escaping patient. After the few moments when the door closed, Avery opened it up again, poking his head out to look outside at the medical wing. Things were calming down considerably, and he scrunched his face up in distaste. Gross, that meant it'll be boring again.
Avery was just about to go back into his office when one of the fellow nurses saw him. She beckoned him over to her and informed him that Josh was off with a patient who looked like they had a broken wrist. The name 'Josh' was all Avery needed to set off; he really didn't an explanation or anything. He was mostly excited to see the fire graduate, as they only saw each other once in a while.
...Avery was a lonely person.
And so he skipped off to the x-ray room, lollipop in his mouth as he hummed a random tune. It wasn't something to be all be happy about, with what the patient probably having a broken wrist, but Avery liked meeting people. Even if the situation was a little, uh...weird. And most likely painful. After reaching his destination, Avery opened the door slightly, his head popping in. "Nurse Avery at your service~" he sang, now fully inside the x-ray, but he was met with a girl right in front of him as she darted for the door, her eyes scared and her breathing heavy. Avery initially leaned back out of reflex, but he peered closer to the girl's face. It looked like she was ready to collapse at any second. "Are you alright?" Avery asked carefully. He could just sense the fear radiating from her and he glanced up briefly, his eyes instantly finding the fire standing there. Avery blinked, his eyes slowly narrowing, as if accusing, what did you do?
Someone was about to get some ass whoopin'.

The scary thing about Joshua was that, unless he was talking to a friend and they made it clear that they were joking about whatever was bothering or offending him, Joshua's threats were best taken seriously. He didn't talk for the sake of hearing his own voice and so if someone angered him and he threatened to hurt them, they'd better watch their back. He didn't often resort to threats of the non-serious sort because, as they were discussing, they lost their colour after a while and it became a case of crying wolf. He hated when people did not take him seriously and so he did his best to ensure that there was no fucking around when it came to him and what he meant by things.
He enjoyed listening to the way she talked, the way she worded things. It was not an insult, he didn't think she 'talked funny', it was really just a case of his loving the Irish dialect and enjoying conversation with someone native to the land. He'd only been there once and he really did have plans to go back at some point in the future. He remembered how green it had been. Almost overwhelming, especially since he'd thought that Maple Hollow was already pretty good about the nature thing.
"Mm. I can't say I relate, really," he admitted with a shrug. "I've always been sure of myself." Though it might have sounded like he was saying this to be a braggart, Joshua really was being honest with himself and with her. There was no use lying to the girl in an attempt to come across as more empathetic. If he could relate to someone then he'd tell them so but he was just as quick to admit that they were as different as apples and oranges. He'd already told her that he knew what he was doing but he'd reasserted with the word 'always' that it was not a new development for him. Medical school had been something he was setting his sights on since he was a kid. "I guess there's no rush, though, since you're still in high school. Be a bit different if you were already in college and all that." Then there was the stress of choosing your major and decisions. A stress he'd never felt, thank goodness.
He blinked when she mentioned expenses, something that rarely crossed Joshua's mind. I mean, he knew that things cost money and that it made the world go 'round but since his family had always been so wealthy it had never been enough of an issue for him. "Well, yeah, a lot of medical students are in debt for a while after they graduate," he said. "But I won't have that problem so it doesn't bother me." He didn't tend to talk about the wealth he had because people tended to look at him differently afterwards but he also didn't pretend otherwise when it came into the conversation. She apologised and he waved his hand. "S'fine." It really didn't bother him, not a sensitive enough subject for that.
It would take an incredibly oblivious person to miss the changes that came over her when he mentioned his element, so casually, like he hadn't expected it to be a problem. For he hadn't, really. Joshua was an observant person so it was nearly impossible for him to miss the way that her babbling silenced itself and she seemed to pale, to clam up or something along those lines. She covered her mouth and her breathing seemed to pick up. She was panicking, he could tell, but he did not know why.
As if the situation was not bad enough, Avery came in a couple of seconds later when the girl was making her way toward the door in order to leave. Normally Joshua would have been happy to see his friend but the accusing look that Avery gave him infuriated him. He did not like being blamed for things that he did not do, especially not when it was a friend confronting him. He trusted his friends to have faith in him, to know that he did not go around causing problems for no reason. He was meant to act like a professional in the medical wing, he wanted to work here in the future. His gray eyes flashed with a warning and he said in a low voice, "Look, I don't know what you're thinking, but I didn't do a damn thing." He was also miffed at the girl now, though that was mostly because he felt like he was being seen as the bad guy. All he'd done was tell her his element! "And you can't even tell him I did," he said to her, "because you know I didn't touch you." There was almost a hint of a threat to his voice, though it was mostly the anger he was feeling rather than an actual intent to cause a problem.

. . - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -LIVING IS EASY WITH EYES CLOSEDit's getting hard to be someone but it all works out- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Her hand was frozen on the doorknob and she backed away instinctively when it pushed open, and was met by a sight she didn't quite expect. She could tell that he was a doctor by the coat he was wearing, that and Joshua has said that he needed a doctor in order to take care of a broken wrist. She wasn't at all put off by the fact that this particular doctor was singing and had a... well, apparently a lollipop in his mouth. She raised her eyebrows just slightly, her breath catching as she tried to formulate an adequate response to the question he asked, apparently upon taking in her pallid complexion, and the way her eyes darted towards the door like those of a frightened rabbit.
She tensed up slightly when she heard Josh speak and grit her teeth when his words registered. Of course. The situation couldn't have looked more wrong to any outsider. Misinterpreted. She willed her heart to stop beating quite so fast and the consistent pounding in her ears was making it hard to focus. She took a deep breath and raised her head to look from Joshua to Avery. "He... he didn't touch me," she said quickly, her breath shaky.
"He didn't do anything." She added this to make it absolutely clear that Josh wasn't to blame for anything. At least, not consciously. She wasn't hateful or spiteful and he could get into serious trouble even if she made false claims. No, that wasn't Rory's way. Not that it changed anything about her desire to leave. And leave fast. She dug her nails into the soft flesh of her palm, the pain allowing her mind to clear for just a moment.
She did not want to tell them why. She knew that someone would insist. It's not like they could just ignore a breakdown like that. But she couldn't and she wouldn't because voicing it would just bring it all back in a flood of emotions. That helpless moment when she realised that she was unable to defend herself, held down firmly by hands that were stronger and rougher and meaner than hers. The severe and sickening stench of gasoline, a smell that made her stomach clench and heave even no. The lighting of a match. No. No. Oh god, no. And no. No, she couldn't. Rory bit down on her tongue, tasting the coppery tange of blood almost immediately as she did. Her mind cleared even more and she managed to muster a smile.
For all the world it would look as if she was okay. "I- I have to go. Now." She said it slowly, meticulously, her eyes darting again to the door that was propped open, but still blocked by the newly arrived doctor's form. She could dart at it, hope for the best and use the element of surprise that may even be in her favour? Then she wouldn't have to remain in the room any longer, what with her phobia right there. And the way they glanced, she interpreted their looks to be accusatory (though they probably weren't), at her. And like a frightened rabbit, Rory darted.
[sorry it took so long! I was suddenly sucked into work overload! and I also apologise for the surprise change of pictures at the top of this post. I was growing bored xD]

Okay, so maybe Avery was in the wrong to suspect his friend of doing anything he shouldn't have, especially when they knew each other for a few years already and knew that they wouldn't hurt a fly. But the fear in his soon-to-be patient's eyes shook him. Avery knew that look all too well, as he dealt with patients just like her often. And so he let out a sigh, waving his hand as an apology to Josh. His doctor nurse instincts were peaked; patients were always the victim to him. "Josh~" Avery said lightly, as to tell him to loosen his tone. The girl was obviously very scared right now--about what, Avery didn't know--so his threatening tone of voice wouldn't help the situation, though Avery knew it was mostly the fire temper than anything. Even after these years, it still peaked up around the nurse. Granted, that was mostly Avery's fault, but it was still the fire temper nonetheless.
Avery turned his head away from Josh when the girl finally spoke, a little shaken up. He nodded, offering a smile to lighten up the atmosphere. Eek, it was like he walked into thick fog. "Okay, that clears up one misunderstanding," he said, moving his lollipop to the side of his mouth. Avery peered closer to the girl, both hands on her shoulders, and asked, "Now do you mind telling me the real story? Before I accuse Josh of anything else." A little joking wouldn't hurt! Though he side glanced at said person, his eyes no longer accusatory; rather, they were widened in curiosity. And somewhat apologetically. Avery was known to jump to conclusions and this was no exception, so he felt bad for accusing Josh right off the bat. He'll apologize properly later, but the swelling wrist the girl had was the main subject of his visit.
"Umm, we're gonna have to treat your wrist first before you can--" And the girl darted towards the door, catching Avery off guard. He let out a little squeak despite himself, though he quickly caught the girl around the waist. "Whoa~ where do you think you're going?" he asked, somewhat breathless as he moved his hands to be on her shoulders, hoping it keep her there. Avery shot a look at Josh; clearly there was some connection between him and the girl's current state. He wasn't accusing. His expression was just...blank. And so he hesitantly wrapped one hand around her shoulder and lead her outside the x-ray room, making a gesture for Josh to follow with his other hand. Avery was going to get to the bottom of this eventually, but he really needed to treat her wrist before it got any worse. Or she escaped.
Leading them to his office, he made a gesture for Josh to stay near the door (just in case the girl planned to make a grand escape), and settled the girl on one of the stools. "Well isn't this nice~ three's a company!" he chirped happily, skipping off to a corner in his office to get some supplies. After a few moments of rummaging, he poked his head around the corner, grinning. "By the way, I didn't get your name~ and I know all the pretty ones!" It was safe to say that Avery didn't know how to read the atmosphere.

Perhaps it was his imposing demeanour, the scar on his face, his status as a Fire, but Joshua was almost used to being accused of things that he didn't do. So used to it, in fact, that he probably should have been numb to the feeling by now and able to easily shake it off. Anger did not allow that sort of ease. Anger was not meant to be a simple thing. His jaw was still set and eyes still narrowed when he recognised the signal of apology. He wanted to let it drop but he couldn't get rid of the knot in his stomach, the ire that had rushed in like the tide. He took a breath and scowled when Avery used his light tone. Don't treat me like I need to be scolded. The doctor had not quite done that, really, but the anger did not see it like that. He focused on breathing, though he remained looking quite irked.
The girl speaking did help, at least in some sense. He would have been in a much worse position if she'd somehow tried to blame him for the fact that she had panicked and tried to leave. She would have been in a difficult situation as well. He might have confronted her, snapped at her, made things a lot worse than they already were. Instead he nodded to back up that he hadn't touched her or done anything. "All I said was my element," he muttered to Avery, shaking his head and looking a tad exasperated. Was that it? It almost seemed silly to him, though if he were thinking in the vein of phobias it would not have seemed silly at all. It was the same reason he could not get on a boat without trembling like a leaf, the reason that he clammed up at the thought of swimming, the reason he couldn't swim. He was hydrophobic, afraid of the deep water, of drowning. Maybe if he really thought about it, he could relate. But he wasn't thinking about it. All he could think about was that she made no sense.
He shrugged when Avery looked at him. Don't ask me. I don't know. He'd been helping her out with her broken wrist was all, making pleasant conversation to make the medical wing experience a little easier. She was lucky, really, because there were days when he was a lot less approachable and he would simply nod to things and diagnose the student before sending them on their way. Of course, he usually did this with people he knew were Fires and Thunders, his enemies by alliance. I'm on her side, why the fuck would she flip her shit? It still didn't make sense. It bothered him.
He was quiet as he followed them and stood in front of the door, blocking any sort of escape from it. He didn't really know what to say when one of the people in the room was acting all strange and the other one was only seeking an explanation, one that Josh did not have. The Fire raised an eyebrow at Avery's cheerful disposition, so opposite to his own at the moment. He was still simmering down from earlier. Anger was bad for him. It took a while after the resolve of whatever had set him off to calm him down. He could not say that he was still upset but he could feel the residual irritation. "I'm not going to attack you," he told Rory while Avery was doing his thing with supplies. "They wouldn't let me work in the medical wing if I did that." It was not said light-heartedly or accompanied by a smile. Instead it was a simple statement.

. . - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -LIVING IS EASY WITH EYES CLOSEDit's getting hard to be someone but it all works out- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -She sighed when he caught her around the waist, resigned to the fact that escape was futile. On one hand it was good that Avery had stopped her when he had. If he hadn't, she might have actually made it to the waiting room before getting caught and... well, that would have raised quite a few questions. Her common sense seemed to be clouded by fear. She could not control it, she couldn't.
She gnashed her teeth together and balled her free hand, the one not attached to a broken wrist, into a tight fist. She had no choice but to give in to the slight pressure on her shoulder and let the doctor steer her out of the room and into another. She could tell that Joshua was following and when she turned slightly, she saw him stand by the door. Oh, they thought she would try to run again. Well, damn. She turned back to watch Avery prance about his office. He sure was cheerful. If she were less tense, Rory would have appreciated it. As it were, she was far too preoccupied with trying to figure out how to get out of this situation, to pay much attention to him.
His question snapped her back out of the mulling and she looked up, surprise. "Uh... Rory. Me name's Rory." She grimaced at her own accent. Sometimes she could mask it better. Now apparently was not one of those times. She looked back down at her hand. Her wrist looked pretty bad, now that she was paying closer attention to it. It was still at an odd angle, and now had turned slightly blue and swollen. She jumped, startled, when Joshua spoke again, and turned in her seat. She nodded hesitantly. It helped. A little. "Okay." She nodded.
Joshua had answered the doctor's question of 'Do you mind telling me the real story?' not that his answer answered anything really. Well, it did not help clear things up. She squeezed her eyes shut and made her decision. "A'ight. Fine," she said, looking up at Avery. "Ye want to know the story? Fine." But she did not feel like telling it. Instead she reached down with her uninjured hand, and awkwardly fumbled at the laces of her shoes for a moment. It was all very ungraceful due to the state of her right hand, and Rory was not a lefty. Finally she managed, and proceeded to kick her shoe off, before carefully pulling off her sock. She pulled her jeans up a little higher, but only managed up until a little ways over her ankle. The scars proceeded up to her knee. "The other one's the same," she said in a hollow sort of voice.
Some people probably wouldn't see why she was so bothered by them. Sure, they weren't pretty. But many people had scars. Joshua had scars. Most everyone did, she knew. But they meant a lot more to her. They stood for her weakness back then. And her father had been utterly unsympathetic. He'd been raging that she'd "let" herself get hurt and he had to pay for her stay at hospital.
She looked once at her maimed foot and then away again. She was disgusted by it and avoided having to look at her feet as much as possible. She even slept wearing socks. No one, no one but her family knew about it. The scars certainly weren't pretty. They hadn't been allowed to heal properly and the hospital she had gone to had done a lazy, haphazard job patching her back together again. Her families finances couldn't cover anything more than the bare minimum. "Why'd you have to get yeself injured like that, lass?!" her father had accused. And she couldn't blame him. She'd sucked up the monthly wages all in a single day. Most people would probably get plastic surgery. Make the larger scars less noticeably, smooth out the jagged and ugly scars. The scars crisscrossed, her foot was a warzone of them. In some places the skin was stretched, glistening and taut, like that over a drum. She grimaced, but didn't make eye contact with either Avery or Josh when she spoke next, "ye can't tell anybody. Please."
