detention and poppy were definitely not two words that went well together in the same sentence. in fact, most people would have normally thought that they were goingcrazy if they ever heard those two words in the same sentence. ever. even for poppy, she would have been quite surprised if she ended up in detention. she would usually just stay away from any kind of trouble. as soon as she saw that a conflict was developing between two people, the girl would run away as fast as she could in order to not get caught in all of it. trouble was definitely not something that she liked. imagine her surprise when her and nell were simply taking a stroll around the school – the dungeons out of all places, but poppy was not one to complain about anything – and they had gotten caught in the middle of a prank that had certainly been pulled by water elementals since there was an all out flood going on where the fire elementals’ dormitories were meant to be. it truly looked like the great flood from where they were and they definitely did not have time to build an ark. however, when they had tried to flee the scene of the crime, they had simply ended up right in the teacher’s grasp who had heard the commotion and had decided to try and catch the culprits. even though she would never have said this out loud, she wandered why this person had ever become a teacher in the first place. how stupid could they be, really, to think that an earth elemental and a wind elemental could have pulled off such a thing? it was ridiculous. but poppy was never one to seek conflict, even less so with a teacher and she decided to shut her mouth about it and accept the detention that had been given to the two girls. it was not like she had anything better to do anyway. she never did. well, except from the occasional class she would give one or two younger wind elementals on how to handle their element better. but that was planned to happen in another week or so. she probably would have spent her day doing homework anyway. poppy arrived before everybody else at the location of their detention. well, it was to be expected, really. she probably was the only one in there who really did not mind being there and didn’t have any other plans for the day. she felt bad for nell. being who she was and as friendly as she was, she probably had better things planned for her day and had had to give those up because of that stupid detention they had gotten. she sat down at one of the desks quietly, putting her bag down on the top of it and rummaging through it as she looked for that one notebook she had planned to go over. a few things dropped to the ground and she prepared to shoot an apologetic look the teacher’s way to apologize for disturbing something that had not even started yet – you could definitely see that she was not one who was used to being in detention and that she was nervous about it. however, the teacher never even glanced at her. typical. she shrugged slightly and started picking up her things. finally, people started arriving. she recognized them for being those who generally always got into trouble. she recognized one in her own element and grade who had been known since ninth grade to always be up to mischief. he always was on the water elementals’ side when something was going down. she also noticed the few bullies who had already picked on her here and there but did not dare make eye contact with any of them. she finished picking up her stuff and simply decided to focus her eyes on her work, waiting for nell to show up and hoping that the girl would sit near poppy so that she could have some kind of protection if the teacher suddenly decided to leave them alone. she did not feel so comfortable with all these misfits and ‘bad’ students in one room, to be honest. but then again, this scenario could not happen, could it? the teacher was not only there to watch them. they were meant to set an example, right? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - credit , to me tagged , miss nell doe shepherd, aka starkkkk. music , everything on my comp. outfit , clickers, bby.words , SEVEN THREE TWO. notes , awh, poor little poppyyyy.~

Usually Nell ended up in detention because of stupid things. Forgetting work, a book, being late to class. And those things happened rarely, so the detention hall had never seen much of her. This was only slightly different from those other times, because she didn't think she'd ever been in a situation like this before. They hadn't even been in the dungeons, they'd just been near it, and yet they had to get involved with a bunch of Water students and their prank. They were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, but the teacher didn't really care about hearing their stories or alibis. She wondered if he was a Fire himself, but didn't get to question that before they'd been sentenced to the detention. She remembered her past experiences, the time with the Fire leader. That had not been fun. It was lucky that she was passive and didn't get in people's ways, she didn't have many enemies. And Poppy was the codifier of such an idea. She would never hurt anyone or do anything like what the Waters had done. Of course, the teacher didn't know that, but she was still defensive about that. It wasn't fair to assume they had done anything without taking in both accounts. Nell wouldn't have cared half as much if Poppy hadn't taken the heat for it, too. The girl most certainly did not deserve a detention, she was as innocent as a deer grazing in the pasture.
Nell tried her best not to be late for the detention, even though she did not want it at all. She had her father to take care of, and work after that. She wondered why college students could even get detentions, but that was how the Academy worked and she didn't question it. The problem was getting lost on her way to the detention hall. Even after the years she'd been attending, her directional issues never failed her. She didn't recognize most of anything around it because of how rarely she had to have a detention. The place was a mystery to her, and so she was pushing the time by the time she showed up, messenger bag on her shoulder, hair caught up in its usual bun. She wore a loose fitting sweater over leggings, and smiled a bit as she entered, handing the teacher her slip. It was amusing that they even needed slips, like someone would wander in here just to hang out when they didn't have a detention. "You're late," he said as he read the slip, and she gave him an apology without explaining why. She didn't like to admit that she couldn't find her way around places, that was admitting weakness and she didn't have weakness.
She looked around and found Poppy sitting and doing some work, of course having gotten here earlier than her. She walked over to a desk nearby, wondering if she'd spot some familiar faces. Not all of her friends kept out of trouble like she did. But even that was a lie. She most certainly didn't stay out of trouble, but she didn't intentionally seek it out. Not recognizing anyone, she sat down next to the Wind girl and said, "Sup." She felt exhausted, it having been a long day and destined to get longer. She'd be dealing with a sick father, a dick brother, and a manipulative aunt later on in the day. All she wanted was sleep, and she wasn't worried about that, like it may be a sign she could be backtracking to another time when all she wanted to do was sleep. It was still surprising when she lacked energy. "Hey, do you wanna try to petition to the teacher to let us out of here? I can't really stay, I didn't expect that I'd be getting a detention, though." It was not usually on her laundry list of things to do, so she hadn't planned ahead. And she really could not stand here, though she didn't tell Poppy why. She was not a person for talking about her personal life, even though she never acknowledged it out loud.

poppy was quite aware of the fact that this detention was unfair. she thought that, since they lived in a free country where democracy ruled, they would have been seen as innocent until they were proven guilty by some kind of strong evidence that accused them both. however, the teacher had not bothered investigating the scene of the crime. according to his way of thinking, anyone who was on the scene of the crime when it happened was guilty. at least, that was what poppy thought to be his way of thinking. what else could he have been thinking at that moment, really? however, with the low amount of luck that she had always possessed, she was not surprised that the teacher had found them and not the actual culprits or some other people who had been roaming the halls around the entrance of the dungeons at that time. it had to fall on the two of them. she had wanted with all of her heart to contest this to higher powers. however, she thought that even if she tried, it would be no use. they probably would have ended up getting another detention for some other stupid reason that made absolutely no sense. better just go through it than risking being punished even more severely. at least, that was her opinion. it was mostly why poppy had not dared arriving late at the detention. in fact, she never dared arriving late for anything that was related to school, really. it made her feel even more nervous than she normally was and god knew that she did not need more stress in her life. when she looked up from her paper after a few seconds of working, she noticed that a few eyes were on her. when she took a better glance around the room, she noticed that she was the only one who was doing something with her time. all the others were either sleeping or sending messages to one another. she raised an eyebrow. she definitely did not belong in this room. when nell showed up, poppy was quite glad. at least, she had someone who was on her side in this room now. she was not on her own anymore. she felt somewhat protected by nell’s presence. however, the feeling vanished once nell proposed that they should ask the teacher if they could get out of there. the girl’s eyes found their ways to her friend’s and widened slightly as she concidered the idea. contesting the decision of a teacher to another one? this certainly seemed like a bold move to make to her and everyone knew that poppy did not have a single ounce of bold inside of her small body. for example, when had stood after teacher had arrived several minutes after her and she had stood to give him her slip, he had barely looked up from whatever he had been doing. whenever she walked through the hallways, it was like people were walking right through her. they never noticed her, even if their bodies slammed right into her own. they barely ever looked down to apologize to her. they simply kept walking. she sometimes wondered if she had died overnight without noticing it and people could not actually see or hear her. then again, if she had been dead, they would have been unable to physically make contact with her. it would have been somewhat wonderful, really. at least, it would have kept her from having all those marks on her arms. i d-don’t think that’s s-such a g-good idea, nell.. poppy murmured as she looked over at her friend. she could understand that other people might have had other, better things to do – unlike her, but she really did not see the point in asking for something they obvously were not going to get with such an uncaring teacher as the one who was “watching” them. her eyes fell back on her paper and she bit on her bottom lip. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - credit , to me tagged , miss nell doe shepherd, aka starkkkk. music , everything on my comp. outfit , clickers, bby.words , SIX SIX EIGHT. notes , woot.

Nell didn't get angry. It wasn't in her range of emotions. There were a few rare occasions, bu they were just that--few and rare. Most of the cases were with her father, the man who knew how to push her buttons like a pro. It was only family who had that special privilege, as she's found. She guessed the fact that she'd gotten in such a bad fight with Josh early on in their relationship just proved they were meant to be family. Otherwise, she always dealt with issues calmly and rationally. That was the better option. Especially in a situation like this. She did feel a prickling of agitation, something that wouldn't have been there if she didn't have things to do. She was very stressed out as of late, but she covered it up well. Nell was good at pretending, good at going about things with a smile on her face. That's how she worked, after all, charming and with a wide smile. Even when Jane was trying her best to upset her. She'd been a bit calmer as of late, but that just made her fear for the fact that she was planning something big. What could that big thing be? Nell didn't want to ponder it, the idea frightened her. Her aunt had too much power on her side, was a big obstacle in the way of most of her life. What could she do in the fact of that? In the face of anything?
She gazed at Poppy when the girl said that it might not have been a good idea. Another sign that Nell did not get mad, she was not even bothered by that. Instead, she thought of how quiet and compassionate Poppy was. How content she seemed to be to sit out on the sidelines. "Think about it, Popita," she told the girl, turning in her seat a bit. "There is no reason for us to be in here. We did nothing wrong. Do you want the man to keep us down?" The last part was clearly not serious, but leave that to Nell. It wasn't like her to keep things completely in the realm of seriousness, such a thing was near impossibly for her. "Let's take a stand. The worst they can do is tell us to sit down and shut up. What'll it hurt to tell them our side of the story?" She was getting into the realm of movie-style speech, now, but the intent was sincere. The girl was as determined as the best of them. "We don't even need an alibi or to cross-check stories, because we did nothing wrong!" Her voice didn't rise, but it did become fiercer with intent. Even though she was peaceful most of the time, she did have a passionate side.

poppy was not one to lay her feelings down on a table for everyone to see. she had never thought that letting people read you like an open book was a good idea. well, in fact, she used to do that. however, she had learned the hard way that she should not have trusted people that easily. she should have known better than to let other kids use her like that. at that time, though, she had been such a naïve little girl. she had inherited that trait from her mother. she had thought that the world was a good place where people could sometimes be genuinely nice. she had not lost all faith in the world since then, but she knew better than to let everyone see how she truly felt. she was definitely not as good as nell when it came down to hiding her feelings. most of the time, she would not hide them behind a smile. her nervosity was her wall. whether she was feeling anger, sadness, disappointment, they would all be hidden behind the wall the trust issues she had had developped over the years. even when she was happy in a certain situation, she was unable to truly show just how happy she was. a simple smile would be a sign, but she would still be as quiet and shy as ever. she thought she would never get out of that vicious circle. the more she hid her feelings from the world, the more her paranoia about people trying to hurt her was growing and the more nervous she always felt. except from her parents, she never felt that she could trust anyone fully. you could not exactly blame her, however. after all, she had seen the worst side of some people. the manipulative and plain mean one that they’d wanted to hide from everyone forever. somehow, she had this ability of making the bad come out of certain people without actually wanting it. was she truly that annoying? if so, something needed to be done about it. the girl had always been one to respect authority. she knew her place and would always stay in her place no matter what. attempting to get out of detention with nell by explaining their side of the story seemed out of place to her. still, the way nell talked was quite convincing. this detention definitely meant more to her than it did to poppy. clearly, the earth elemental had something else on her mind. she had better things to do than sit in a stupid classroom while doing nothing and just lose her time. in another situation, even if nell had had something better to do, she would have said that they needed to accept the consequences of their actions. however, the fact was that there had been no actions in the first place. they had down absolutely nothin except from the fact that they had had the misfortune of walking by a scene of crime at the wrong time. the nickname her friend used put a smile on poppy’s lips as she turned her head away from her work and looked in nell’s eyes. a slight chuckle escaped her lips and she found herself shaking her head only slightly, in a very “poppy” way. her last comment was the thing poppy needed to get her going. ex-exactly! she murmured with slight enthusiasm before carefully standing up and slowly walking over to the desk of the teacher. she stood there, in front of the desk for a second or more, before the teacher got tired and looked up. she took a deep breath to calm herself down. w-with all d-due respect, uh.. m-my friend and i.. we d-don’t belong here.. she started shakily, her eyes wandering off of the teacher’s face every now and then. she didn’t have the strength to do this. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - credit , to me tagged , miss nell doe shepherd, aka starkkkk. music , everything on my comp. outfit , clickers, bby.words , SIX FOUR EIGHT. notes , yet anotherrrr. i’m so on fire.

Her teeth flashed in a grin when Poppy gave a gentle shake of her head. And it seemed that there was a flash of inspiration, of spirit, that brought her to her feet. That's my girl. There was something like pride as Nell followed her, a mother watching her child speak her first words. She didn't doubt there was strength in the bird-like student, it was the kind of hidden strength. The best kind, because it surprised people when it came out, caught them off-guard and unawares. The stutter did not show off that kind of strength, however, but Nell was more than willing to help her out. She placed her hands on the desk as if leaning forward would strengthen her argument. "That's right," she stated firmly, her voice in stark contrast to Poppy's lilting tone. In times when she got serious, she was glad for her background, that she came from the city where taxi cabs hit people and drove away without apology, people cursing each other out for simply breathing the same air. She had the accent of unforgiving people, a background of New York toughness. Hopefully she wouldn't become too adapted to how those around her spoke, all these kind Canadians. She was already less-than-intimidating, she didn't want to lose the conviction of voice.
The teacher directed his gaze between the two girls and said, "Don't belong here?" Nell shook her head. "We were framed for a prank pulled by some Water students. The wrong place and wrong time." Her eyes were as steady as her voice. She would make a good lawyer, it was in the genes. Even though she didn't want to, she remembered the courtroom, her grandfather's tailored suit, clinical eyes the same hue as hers. She didn't want to be a lawyer. They didn't deliver justice, and she wanted no part in that. "Can you prove it?" The man voiced it as a challenge and Nell exchanged a glance with Poppy before glancing back to him, the same sternness in her eyes. "If we can find the kids who did it and tell them to fess up--" He held up a finger. "How do I know you're not just trying to get out of this?" She pulled her hands back, staring straight. "If we don't come back with the kids who did it in an hour, you can give us another detention." His eyes searched hers and Poppy's, but she did not show weakness. This was not some plan to ditch out on detention. This was a plan to set her and Poppy free. He sighed. "Go ahead." He actually agreed to this Scooby Doo ploy. She smiled in triumph and turned to Poppy. "Sound like a plan?" An incredibly overreaching plan, but a plan, and the only way she knew to get her over her father's house on time.

pretty much as soon as she stood up from her seat, poppy knew that this was a pretty bad idea. she would have gone back to her place if she had not felt something pushing her forward to the teacher’s desk. maybe it was because nell was following her or because of the way she knew her friend looked at her from simply feeling her eyes on her back. she could not go back now. it was impossible, so she kept walking forward until she reached the desk. she had tried to think of the right words to say, of a way to explain the teacher correctly why they were in this situation and why they needed to get out. one of her hands was quickly put in the front pocket of her jeans while the other pushed her reading glasses up on her nose. it was a little habit that she had to keep herself from getting too fidgetty, which was something that she did when she was overly nervous. usually, you would only notice the stuttering. however, the truth was that there were stages in poppy’s nervousness. it started with the stuttering. then, it got a little worse with the lip biting. after that came the fidgetting and moving stuff around. after that, well, it had only happened once when she had had a panic attack. she had curled in a ball on the floor and rocked back and forth until her parents had found her. she replaced her thin blouse gently before sticking her free hand in the other front pocket of her jeans. when she spoke, she barely knew what she was saying. she hoped that the words which were escaping her mouth made some kind of sense. otherwise, she would just look like a fool and the others would start laughing, which would lead poppy to going on an all out cleaning rampage. it probably would not have been the best thing to do. fortunately, before it could get worse, she heard nell’s voice and knew that she would not have to speak again, which was a big relief for her. the earth elemental had this under control. for the first time since she had moved from her desk, the girl was able to focus on something else other than what her hands had been doing. she focused on nell’s words, taking every single one in, which she was certain the teacher sitting in front of both of them was not doing. he seemed to be looking somewhere between the two of them, not quite sure on which one he should focus. when poppy looked up at her friend, she was convinced that the older girl was totally in control. the way she leaned forward with her hands firmly pressed on the desk and the sternnes in her voice, poppy started feeling confident enough to slowly slip her hands out of the front pockets of her jeans and let them hang at her sides until one reached for the other arm, holding it. poppy answered the teacher’s question in her head. no, they could not prove it. and there went their chance at getting out of here. she was disappointed. not for herself, of course. she had nothing better to do anyway. but for nell. she seemed to have somewhere important to be and she was upset that she would not be able to get there if they stayed in detention. however, she would not say a thing, keeping quiet and going back to her place. she turned around just when nell started speaking again. THEY COULD?! poppy seriously had no idea as to where the girl was going with this. it sounded completely ridiculous. they had not even seen the students who had pulled this prank and managed to frame them. how were they supposed to catch them? the girl ran a hand through her hair quickly and started chewing on her bottom lip and listened to nell finish her offer to the teacher. it seemed like a fair bargain and he accepted, letting them roam the halls in order to find two people they most likely would not be able to find. poppy simply nodded. s-sure.. why n-not? she said softly, letting a light smile appear on her lips. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - credit , to me tagged , miss nell doe shepherd, aka starkkkk. music , everything on my comp. outfit , clickers, bby.words , SEVEN ONE SIX. notes , annie’s a poofie.

Nell may not have been the best strategist, but she was good under pressure and good at coming up with things on the spot. She could worm her way out of a lot, with just a few chosen words. Not that she often needed this 'talent' (she didn't actually have talents, according to herself and the mean thoughts in her head that constantly belittled her) but it came in handy in situations like this. A creative thinker, she was one to be fantastical with her ideas, but she saw nothing wrong with that. It had once been a fantastical idea that the earth revolved around the sun, and now it was a fact accepted without a second question. Her father had introduced her to such ways of thinking, and once upon a time she may have hated acknowledging that fact. Even now she might have still hated that he was responsible for it, but the anger and bitterness got so exhausting. Nell was an old soul, she'd lived far too many lives to allow herself to grow angry over every little thing. And for those who wondered how she could be so patient and calm all the time, that was the answer. She never saw a point in getting upset. That was not to say she didn't have limits, they existed. It just took a special kind of person to realize that. Her father certainly had, he was the only one to see this strange kind of anger. Usually, her temper manifested silently and coldly, like a blizzard outside the windows of a house. With her father it was a raging wildfire, it was an explosion, it was something so astounding that Nell did not even know she was capable of it. Every time she blew up at her father, it still surprised her. That was not how she worked, that was not how she operated. She usually did not get so pissed off, didn't let it take over. It was their relationship, she decided. It had to be the relationship between those two that dictated just how bad her anger would get.
When Poppy agreed, Nell took a breath and brushed an errant hair away from her eyes as she nodded, the look in her eyes revealing the cogs in her mind working toward the idea that she had come up with. She exited the classroom, her sneakers silent against the glossy floors of the Academy. It was relatively quiet, classes being done for the day, and she felt her phone buzz in her pocket. She took it out to read the text from her father, and quickly shot him one back telling him why she hadn't come yet. Nell returned the phone to her pocket, addressing the blond-haired stutterer then. "So the best place to look for our perps would be--" The ringtone 'Dickhead' cut her off, and she fished the phone out of her pocket, hitting end, shooting an apologetic look toward Poppy as she continued to walk. She was texting again, annoyed by the fact she had to do it. Well, annoyed as Nell Shepherd could get. Nell did not like to be the kind of person to text around other people, but clearly her father needed to know why she was in detention. (He used to be worse, this 'good father' attempt.) The man had an innate ability to completely exasperate her. Nell wondered whether or not he actually tried or if it just came to him naturally. Sometimes, she knew that he actually did try to get on her nerves, tried to infuriate her in his spiteful ways. He was a Thunder through and through, and she was glad that she did not turn out completely like him. She did not deny similarities, did not deny that when her great grandfather had once said that she was her father's daughter, it was a true statement.
Once that was over with, she returned her phone to her back pocket. She would not care to look once he texted back, she did not need to answer to him. She was nineteen-years-old, had been living on her own since she was seventeen, and he decided to come back into her life during that time. He could wait for a response. She'd waited for eleven years. "As I was saying," Nell continued, and just then her phone vibrated and she laughed a little bit but did not take it out. "Our best bet is the Water dorms. Hopefully they haven't gone home or anything. I recognized them, but I don't know their names." That was one annoying fact about this little escapade. They had a lot of time left, and she didn't think they'd need all of it, but she would be sorely disappointed if the two of them ended up empty-handed and with another detention. Especially since she would be sacrificing Poppy in that case. She refused to let that happen. "Do you know any Water students that could help us?" She was Wind, Nell was Earth, their only option would be to sneak in. They could get into trouble, but it wasn't like they weren't already in enough of it. Besides, they wouldn't be doing anything too bad, and hopefully if they got caught, Nell could use her vocabulary powers to get them out of it. Something she and Jane had in common, the ability to twist words, but she did not allow herself to think on that. It would end up messing with her mind more than her mind had already been messed with over the years.
