It was the weekend. Saturday to be exact. Bastian was down at the Hallow spending the weekend with his parents. Bastian had to make a small stop first to what had become one of his favorite places since his move to the Hallow. The ice cream parlour. What could Bastian say? He was a sucker for ice cream. During his orphanage days he didn't have the luxury of eating ice cream whenever he wanted like he did not. This was one of those times that he definitely took advantage of his new situation. Bastian walked down the familiar street as the parlour came into view and a grin grew on Bastian's face. He pulled the door and went to wait in line which thankfully wasn't long. He only had to wait maybe a good ten minutes before he was finally the at front. He looked at the many flavors. They all looked good but today he would be pleasuring himself with his favorite. Mint-n-chip.
Bastian got the biggest size bowl with two scoops of the delicious sweet dessert. He payed for his sweet delight and went to take a seat. His parents wouldn't be home for a little while so he would just pass the time at the parlour until they text saying they were home. He took an empty seat and pulled out his drawing book and a few pencils. He opened the page to a drawing that he was working on. It was a character drawing. It sort of had a superhero quality to it. The character was surrounded by a forest. It looked rather intimidating but very heroic. At least in Bastian's eyes. While he was drawing he enjoyed his delicious ice cream as he drew.

The great thing about living in Maple Hollow, as opposed to in a dorm at the Academy, was that things were never a mandatory bus ride away anymore. Before if Sandra had wanted ice cream, it would have meant hoping beyond hope that they had something like that for dessert or something in the castle itself, or she'd have to take the bus out to town, and that was usually too much trouble just for ice cream. Where Sandra now lived, the nearest ice cream parlour was but two blocks away, and this was definitely close enough for her to walk. She'd spent time wandering around for a few weeks in her spare time, killing time and getting used to the neighbourhood. She'd known a good deal of the town before, having visited pretty frequently, but it was a good idea in Sandra's mind to properly familiarize herself with the place now that she actually lived there.
Needless to say, this particular parlour she'd already kind of known about, having visited a number of times with friends on their weekends and what-not. Still, it was very exciting in Sandra's mind to now be able to get there in a matter of minutes, so even though it was now November and therefore pretty darn cold, she decided to brave the weather and head out to grab some ice cream. It wasn't actually that cold, actually, once she'd been walking a little while -- the sweater had definitely been a good call. In fifteen minutes or so she'd reached the ice cream parlour, and she had ordered a soft serve half-chocolate, half-vanilla cone when she looked around for somewhere to sit. It was pretty empty, but without anything to do but eat her ice cream Sandra would feel kind of lame sitting by herself, that was for sure. Luckily, she wouldn't have to today. "Bastian?" she asked once she recognized someone sitting by himself -- even if she hadn't seen his face (though she had) the sketchbook would have been a dead giveaway. "Hey, what's up?" she asked, grinning as she bounded over to him. Hopefully he didn't mind being bothered.

Bastian took in another scoop of his beloved ice cream. He could die happy in all honesty. By this time Bastian had pulled out a couple of colors from his bag to start adding color to his sketch. Everyone that knew him well enough knew that you could normally always find him with his sketchbook in hand. People would be more surprised to find him without it. He'd be lost if didn't always have it handy. You never knew when something worth drawing would pop at you and Bastian was always one to be prepared. As social as Bastian was he could find himself getting lost in his drawings. It would take his friends to pull him out. Kai was always doing that when he would find Bastian in his dorm drawing away. The only thing that was keeping him grounded at the moment was his ice cream. His need to put down his pen to eat his ice cream was keeping him from falling into the world of his drawing.
Then something else pulled him out of his own little world. A sweet voice. Bastian looked up to see who it was and smiled his bright smile. "Hey Sandra." he said putting down his pencil again and grabbing his cup of ice cream. "Nothing much. Just celebrating." he said as she made her way towards him. Sandra was an eleventh grade water that Bastian had met. They had quickly hit it off and became fast friends. Sandra was definitely one of the prettiest and friendliest girls he had met since his arrival at the Hallow and the Academy. Of course there were many girls who were pretty and friendly but Bastian wasn't friends with all of them. "I'm guessing you had a craving for ice cream as well."

Though Bastian had obviously been busy, he didn't seem too put off at being interrupted, and Sandra was kind of glad of this. It would have been pretty awful if she'd interrupted him when he'd wanted to be left alone. Luckily, he was smiling, and so she took this to mean that he didn't really mind. As per usual, she was already smiling too, so it was just a big circle of good feelings all around. "Hey!" she greeted, sliding into the seat across from him at the table without any proper invitation, but he hadn't seemed to mind anything thus far so she figured that if he wanted her to, he could just ask her to leave later. She probably wouldn't be that offended. "Celebrating?" she asked, eyebrows wrinkling together in confusion. "Huh. What are you celebrating, anyway?" Maybe he'd just gotten a really good mark on a test or something, or he liked the weather outside, and that was cause enough for celebration. Maybe it was some kind of big news, though. She didn't know.
She licked at her ice cream -- mmmm, ice cream -- and took a moment to really savour the taste before answering what he said next. "I always have a craving for ice cream," she corrected with a grin, taking a bite out of her cone too while she was at it. Ice cream cones were definitely the best, but then again, Sandra could pretty much have ice cream in any way, on anything, at any time, just name it and she'd be there. "But today I was lucky enough to have a craving for ice cream and enough money, so you know how it is!" Well, maybe he knew how it was. She figured he did if he was here, but then again, he was apparently celebrating something. "Whatcha drawing there?" she asked, looking upside-down at the picture he'd been working on.

It wasn't uncommon to run into school mates in the Hallow, especially on the weekends. Not many people like being cooped up at the castle on the weekends. It was very 'potter-esque." Living and going to school in a castle nearby a town. Difference being that they could come down Maple Hallows whenever they liked. Of course most people normally took the weekend to come down to the Hallow since during the week with homework and such there wouldn't be much time to catch the bus down unless you lived in town already like Bastian did. Of course Bastian lived in the dorms but his family, adoptive family, lived in town and he came down just about every weekend to visit. Point was though that during the weekend you would definitely see the town flooded with students trying to let loose after a long week of schooling. So you could expect to run into people you knew. And in this case it was Sandra.
Bastian knew that Sandra lived in the Hallow as well. When she questioned him he just gave a bright smile as he gulped down a spoonful of ice cream. "A year in the Hallow." he said plainly. It had been a year ago that he had been found by the scouts of the academy and brought to live in the Hallow and move in with the Hawthornes. At the time when he first arrived he had found the town different. He had been so used to big cities, first Philadelphia and then New York City. So when he came to the Hallow it had been definitely a change. Not saying it was extremely small but compared to the places he had been it was a change. Of course it had been a change for the better considering what had happened but that's another story. Not many people knew that he was adoptive, it just wasn't he went on bragging about but it wasn't something he hid from people. He wasn't ashamed or anything. It just wasn't something he brought up to every person he knew. If the subject was brought up he wasn't hesitant talking about it.
He smiled at her comment. "That's makes two of us." Bastian was one to always be in the mood for ice cream, especially if it was mint or chocolate. He had a weakness for those. "I see. One of these days I'm gonna treat you. All you can eat." he said with a bright smile. Money no longer became a problem when he came to the Hallow. Not that he went on spending sprees whenever he wanted but it was there when he needed it. His smile grew when she asked about his drawing. Bastian was one who loved to show off his creations because he took pride in them. He turned the book around so that Sandra could get a better look at it. "Nothing special really. Just a cartoon. Going with the superhero look this time around." he said as he reflected on the drawing and ate his sweet. "So how was your week?"

A year in the Hollow? Well, that was a weird thought, though not a bad one. She kind of thought it was cute, actually, that he remembered such a thing and actually had made proper enough note of it that he would go out to celebrate it. The idea was definitely nice, though, of his celebrating an entire year now in the little town, and so she just beamed at Bastian. "Aw, how cute! You moved here a year ago?" She kind of felt like leaning over and pinching his cheeks or something, but that would have probably just annoyed him, so she decided that this would be a very bad idea. Another time, maybe. Bastian really did have the cutest face, though, and he was the type of kid that she found honestly, seriously adorable. "Well, ice cream's just so yummy..." Sandra said innocently, grinning a little even as she licked more at her ice cream. The cold weather outside had long since been forgotten.
She giggled a little bit at the idea of an all-you-can-eat buffet of nothing but ice cream, but she also kind of thought that there was... probably nothing better on all of Earth, actually, if it actually existed. She was sure one existed somewhere. There was of course usually ice cream at those large buffets and what-not, but there was also all that other food. She did love food in general, but not when it was keeping her from her one true alimentary love. "All-you-can-eat ice cream, huh?" she said, sighing a little bit contentedly and leaning back in her chair, daydreaming. "All those different flavours... All the ice cream I can eat... Sprinkles, too?" she asked hopefully, giggling a little bit. She was sure he didn't really mean an ice cream buffet or anything, but the idea was just too good for her not to at least imagine a little bit. She looked eagerly at the picture when he turned his book towards her. "Oh, but that's so cute! Aw, what a hero. I bet he gets all those damsels in distress," she teased a litlte bit, laughing. "It looks really good, Bastian!" She considered the question for a second, taking a small bite out of her cone. "My week was okay! Just the usual, homework and stuff." Exams were coming up soon too, much to her dismay. "What about you?"

He nodded his head with pride. One year. One full year since he first set eyes on the town of Maple Hallow. He didn't know what to expect and had no idea of how much his move there would change his life. He just smiled at the thought of it. "Yup. A year today." he said with joy. Of course he didn't exactly go into the details because when he meant that he had moved here he meant alone, not with his family. It was a year ago today that he stepped into the Hawthorne's home. He remembered how he felt when he had first stepped into the giant house. He felt so out of his comfort zone. It felt like a palace to him. Everything looked so exquisite and fancy. He had been nervous to tough anything out of fear of breaking something. Of course the Hawthornes made him feel very welcomed. Besides it would only be for a few months. When the new year started he was going to be moving to the dorms. It was that simple.
As simple as it sounded though things began to change rather quickly and unexpectedly. Sandra pulled him out of his thoughts with her ice cream comment. He just smiled at the water. "Amen to that." he said before taking in another scoop of his ice cream delight. He could never get enough of the yummy desert. When she started talking about his little offer he just smiled at her mischievously. "Now what would an all you can eat ice cream invite be without the essentials. Of course there will be sprinkles." he said matter-of-factually. "And don't forget the fudge." he added on. What would ice cream be without the fudge? He then smiled at her comment about his drawing. "Thanks. And but of course. After all what hero doesn't get the girl in the end? I prefer the happy endings over bittersweet ones any day." He sat back as he contemplated his answer. "Dull as usual. Just getting ready for exams. And of course drawing every chance I get. Lately it seems like I've been using my pencil to write more than draw. Not very fun when your life revolves around drawing." Bastian lived to draw so when he wasn't given the chance too he felt very incomplete. "The most eventful thing I did was go to a concert last week with Nell."

She smiled. He'd remembered the exact day, too? Sandra had moved before, but she certainly couldn't remember the exact days of... anything, honestly. One year in a place was certainly something to celebrate, though, especially when it was somewhere like Maple Hollow -- she really did like it here, always had even back before she'd moved into Matt's place and became an official resident of the town. Technically, she'd only just visited on weekends before, which was still a pretty good way to learn a place, she figured, but it was pretty different. "That's good! Where did you move from?" she asked curiously. These were things that had never come up in conversation with Bastian before -- she'd known that he lived in town, but not where, and she'd never known either that he had come from elsewhere before. They'd also, of course, never discussed how good ice cream was, but that was one of those things that didn't often require discussion. Sandra just assumed it to be true of everyone she met. "And fudge," she repeated, sure that there were stars in her eyes at this point or somethign. "Bastian, if you can get me a free all-you-can-eat ice cream place, I would owe you for life," she told him in what would have been a serious tone if her smile didn't ruini t.
Sandra had to agree that happy endings were better. Bittersweet endings were way too much like... like real life, and the persistent optimist in her wouldn't allow these in stories and drawings and what-not. That would just be depressing. She really wouldn't want that. She was glad that Bastian's new superhero, this drawing, would be able to get whichever lady he so desired in the end. This entire thing reminded her of her conversation with Devin the other day, though, about his becoming Captain Canada -- why were superheroes coming up so often in conversation? "Hey, Bastian, you should draw me a costume for this new superhero I made up," she said suddenly, giggling a little bit. "His name is Captain Canada, and he has a maple leaf on his chest, and a maple syrup gun, and he's awesome." He also looked like Devin, but Sandra didn't know if he and Bastian were acquainted or not, so it might be too weird if she mentioned this. "Aw, dull's no fun!" She shook her head a little, but this did of course tend to be people's usual response around exam time -- there was no time for much else. Sandra, on the other hand, was supremely unconcerned with her upcoming exams, so she was hoping she'd just be able to shrug it off without much incident. "Ooh, you went to a concert? What concert?"

"Thirteen years in Philadelphia. A couple months in New York and then here." he said before taking in a scoop of his ice cream. It had been an interesting adventure. Of course he was only giving her half an answer. If he was to answer completely he would be saying, thirteens in an orphanage in Philadelphia and a couple months on the streets of New York but why ruin the mood. This talk did make him realize that as much as they were friends he had never asked where Sandra lived. He knew enough that she lived in town with her brother but not where exactly nor did he actually share the same thing with her. That he lived in a small mansion in the more expensive neighborhood of Maple Hallow. He smiled at her next comment about the ice cream. "Well, you never know what I have up my sleeve" he said with a wink.
Happy endings were the only he thought about growing up. Getting older life obviously taught you that you don't always get a happy ending but that didn't mean you should hope for them. Some people would tell you that you shouldn't believe in happy endings because you were only setting yourself for disappointment but Bastian never thought like that. He thought happy endings gave you something to work for and look forward to. What was wrong with that after all? Bastian blinked at Sandra's sudden request. Draw a superhero? He listened to details she gave him and then thought about it for a moment. When an image began to come alive in his head he put down his cup of ice cream and turned his sketchbook to a blank page. He grabbed a pencil and started drawing before he lost the image in his head. First drawing out the body of this hero and working his way out. "Should he have a cape?" he asked as he started drawing the face with a mask.
Bastian continued drawing when Sandra asked about the concert. "Some concert in the city. Nell took me. And for my first concert ever it was a lot of fun." he said with a bright smile as he started working on the chest emblem. The way he was drawing this character was having him in a battle ready stance with his maple syrup gun pointed at the ready to fire. "What colors did you want?"

Considering Bastian was only just an itty bitty niner still, thirteen years must have been nearly all of his life, Sandra realized. That was pretty interesting! "I've been to New York once! But wow, thirteen years, huh? What's it like in Philly?" she asked, smiling a little. It was interesting to hear about her friends' lives -- she liked to get to know people and learn things about them, and sometimes she felt that, with a pretty huge circle of friends, she never knew all that much about all of them. She had her best friends and naturally she knew quite a bit about all of them, but outside of that she mostly enjoyed people's company rather than talked about their actual lives and what-not. It was nice hearing about Bastian's. He was such a cute kid. "Like a magician," she said, giggling a little, because that was what she thought of immediately upon hearing the words "up my sleeve". She had a pretty random mind. That was probably... not the greatest. "But a magician that focuses on ice cream or something." She didn't know what that would actually involve, but she was sure he could use that creative artist's mind of his to come up with something.
She giggled a little bit when he blinked. Well, to be fair, she had said it kind of out of the blue, but superheroes were the current topic of conversation! It wasn't like she'd literally just asked him out of nowhere when they'd been talking aobut, like... turnips or something. She watched patiently as he started drawing. Bastian seriously had a gift for this kind of thing. -- sometimes she wished that she could be artistic like that, but Sandra... honestly just wasn't good with her hands. Urgh. Her penmanship was at least legible, though, but she could do nothing like this. "Nope, no capes," she answered confidently, shaking her head. She and Dev had decided that thanks to The Incredibles -- that movie taught some solid superhero life lessons. She was close to finishing her ice cream at this point, and she bit into the cone, listening and watching happily as he drew. "Ooh, nice! Who was playing there?" she asked, curious. She didn't know what type of music Bastian liked, even. "Well, he's Captain Canada, so red and white are good," she said with a giggle. Part of her couldn't believe he was even humouring her like this, to be honest, but he was a nice kid.

What's in like in Philly? To think it had been over a year now since he had been in the city. "Well, like most cities I guess. Big, loud at times, fast paced. Definitely like a jungle sometimes." he said with a thoughtful smile. Philadelphia may not have always been his happiest place on earth but it definitely had its share of good memories along with its not so good memories but it had been his home for thirteen years so it would be an important place for him regardless. "Food's good I guess, but it's been over a year since I was there so I may have forgotten a bit." he said with a bit of a chuckle at himself as he drew in his book. He giggled again when Sandra called him a magician of ice cream. "Just call me the Houdini of ice cream." he said with a bow of his head. "Making ice cream magically delicious for the thirteen years." he said jokingly.
He taken another scoop of ice cream into his mouth while he was still drawing. Of course when Sandra had asked him about the drawing there was the chance that she may have been just messing around but it was a chance to draw so he took it. So no cape which would work. He went into his bag to grab out some colors and started to fill the costume in. He was only paying attention even to catch her next question. "Ummm, just some band. Not really sure but it was a lot of fun." he said with a bright smile. He was just about down with his drawing, just getting in some finishing touches on the gun and hair. When he was finally done he put down his pencils down and tore the picture out of the book before sliding it over to Sandra. "What you think?"

It really did sound like just the typical city, but she nodded a few times anyway as if to digest this information. "That's fun. Did you like it?" she asked, smiling. She figured that he did, if he had lived there for so long, not that people often had choices in where they lived when they were just kids or teenagers... or young adults, even, sometimes. She had grown up in Vancouver and had loved it there, though. Home was very nice. Maple Hollow was nice too, though. She could see why he celebrated his entire first year here. "Oh, you should go back and visit! I guess Philly's a bit far though, huh..." She didn't know much of the Eastern side of the United States, or even much about Canada over there, apart from the very basics. She could navigate her way around where she lived and honestly, that was enough of an accomplishment. "Mister Ice Cream-ini or something," she said, laughing. "And many years to come!" She raised what was left of her ice cream cone, which doesn't much, in a mock toast.
She was alright just watchimg him draw, and wouldn't have honestly minded if he had just ignored her question, but Sandra was always up for making conversation, and so she nodded eagerly at his answer, even though he hadn't really answered at all. "Some band, huh?" she asked, giggling. "You'd think that you'd remember something like that!" He probably couldn't remember if he'd never known in the first place, though. "Glad you had fun, though," she said a little more calmly, finishing off the last bit of her ice cream and sliding forward a bit in her seat to see the picture a little better. She grinned broadly. "It's perfect! Thanks, Bastian!" She would have given him a hug, but from across the table that was a little difficult. Instead she settled for a happy squeal as she took the picture, taking care not to get any ice cream cone crumbs on it or anything like that. "You're the best!"
