Though Joshua had planned to hit the library after class and get done with whatever studying or assignments they had been set for the day, the lesson had presented a surprise--it was a lecture, rather than a regular class day. He had listened throughout even though a couple of his classmates wore the glazed expressions that suggested their boredom, taken notes and then packed up at the end of it. He expected some sort of homework or at least the mention of what they should do to prepare for the next lesson, but there was nothing but a goodbye from the professor as he waved them from the doors. This left him with a couple of options for his lunch break. He could go down to the library and study something else, or else just read something that interested him, or he could... do what? He had been so convinced that they would have some sort of thing to be getting done that he hadn't really considered an alternative option. Most of his friends would probably either be in class or in the mess hall right now, so he quickly pushed away the idea of texting any of them. He didn't want to get what few friends he had in trouble by causing their phones to ring in the middle of a lesson. Not everyone remembered to turn the ringers off and he knew that the Academy weren't always pleased when people interrupted a class with such things.
The mess hall, however, was still an option. Joshua usually preferred to make his own food later in the day went he went home--or, lately, went to Nell's--and he wasn't too hungry anyway, but perhaps there was someone there that he knew. He wasn't sociable by nature but even he wouldn't say no to a little company once and a while. It helped to keep him busy when studying and projects could not. Deciding that he would at least drop by and just leave quickly if there was no one familiar, Joshua changed direction and walked away from the direction of the library and toward the stairs for the first floor instead. He tried to take lesser-known corridors in order to avoid the crowds on their way to the same place as he--crowds weren't something he particularly enjoyed. People jostling around you, bumping into you, cursing at you and shoving you out of the way... Josh was strong and could hold his own, but he didn't want to run the risk of getting into physical confrontation. He couldn't promise himself he wouldn't go off on someone that started cussing him out in the middle of a hallway. It took him much longer than the main crowd to actually enter the hall, and so by that time most of the teenagers were sitting in groups of their friends.
Not feeling too up for eating himself, Josh just grabbed himself a bottle of water and some of the dessert--which today was an assortment of brownies. Each place had a list of ingredients taped to it in case students had allergies, but as he didn't have to worry about this he just lifted a stack of about three or four and then cast around for a table. His usual one was empty as always but he didn't feel like sitting alone--if he'd intended to eat alone, he would have just left eating until later. He had come here looking for something to do, and he spotted that something in the face of someone rather unconventional. The Earth girl wouldn't be his normal choice of entertaining company considering she was rather timid compared to most of his friends, but he felt like he needed that today. He didn't want the company of someone too loud, boisterous or excitable. He had classes after lunch and Josh really didn't want to enter these classes with a headache, thank you very much! He sat down with as much distance between the two as the table would allow--across from her, that is. However, his expression was friendly as he looked at her. "Hello, Kyra," he greeted, just so she knew he wasn't sitting here due to everywhere being full. He bit the end off one of the brownies, swallowed, then asked, "How's your day been?" It was an innocent ice-breaker for the conversation, he figured, and not a personal question. He didn't like personal questions.

[/div] missing me? Kyra didn’t care for class time, when she was often assigned to work a little too close to a boy, but she hated lunch time. She’d been here a few days, and most of the kids were learning how she behaved. Didn’t mean they respected it. For some reason guys seemed to find it the most fun to watch her reactions when they tried to talk or touch her. It was embarrassing for her when she acted strange. It was like every morning she woke up telling herself she wouldn’t react, that she’s be strong. But, when she got to school and someone tried to reach out for her she’d still flinch away. Now that it was lunch time, she was even more open to that kind of thing.
Swiftly and with her head down, Kyra made her way to the lunchroom. She wished she was short so she could hide easier. Instead she was 5’11 without heels. Not that that last tidbit mattered, as she still couldn’t wear a pair to save a life. Instead she wore flats like the navy blue classic ones on her feet right now. They matched the stripped navy blue dress she had on. Kyra had a love for the color blue, and it showed. Even her backpack was blue. Though Kyra was tall and thin, it almost seemed too big for the girl. It didn’t even have that much stuff in it, and the journal Kyra always kept with her for writing song lyrics was held tightly to her chest. After skirting around large crowds she finally made it to the cafeteria and headed for the line. It looked like they were having fried rice and sweet and sour pork or something along those lines, with steamed vegetables. She took some of the rice, and moved on to the desert. Taking two brownies she then made her way to the place where people sat. For a long minute she stared around, trying to find a place to sit down. She didn’t have a friend in this school, so she was looking more for an empty table.
She found one, and sat down swiftly. Her appetite still wasn’t that good, but it was to be expected all things considering. Her brother was trying just about everything to get her to gain weight. She had put on a good four pounds, but there was still another ten to go until she would look healthy. She was trying her best to reach that goal, hence the brownies. She ate slowly, and was about halfway through the rice when someone sat down. Instantly her head shot up, a little nevous and hoping it wasn’t someone trying to be funny. She recognized the boy, but not because he’d bothered her before. She noticed him probably because he seemed to make care not to bother her. Even now he was sitting a little ways away. It made Kyra feel slightly guilty but at the same time was not something she could help.
Nodding her head in Greetin, Kyra finished her bite slowly. “Um… good and you?” She asked, taking another bite as if to occupy her time. The school deserts were good to her, as she wasn’t a picky eater at all. Kyra would, and had, eaten just about anything. Her favorite place to eat was DairyQueen. Then, as she thought about it she began to wonder if Canada had one. Who could she ask? He eyes fell on the boy, Joshua, and she stared for a few seconds before swiftly looking away. After another second passed she asked: “U-um… you wouldn’t know if Canada has a Dairy queen would you? I mean, if you don’t that’s OK too…”

It didn't really bother him that she was quiet and skittish. In fact, perhaps the reason that he could tolerate her company was that she was not overbearing or too excited in conversation. Those that were too pushy and outgoing were a real turn-off for Josh in terms of conversation--he usually preferred the less extravagant personalities of the Earth elementals to the bold and brash Water students. Kyra was an Earth elemental with issues. He had no idea what these issues were, but he didn't care to ask her. He didn't pry into the personal lives of others and just accepted her timid nature as a part of her personality like it was. Just as he had to watch his anger around Nell and exert the occasional patience with Harlow and her nicknames, adapting to the fact that he had to sit further away from her than even he normally would from a person had been sub-conscious. It was just polite. "I'm fine," he said with an air of nonchalance, shrugging as if to back this up. He was always fine, at least to other people, but today it was more serious. He actually was feeling alright and it was one of his better days. He wouldn't say that he was in a particularly cheerful mood, but those were rare. These neutral moods were actually a good thing.
The question wasn't one he'd expected and Joshua blinked in response. Then, after the initial shock, he found himself nodding. He loved Dairy Queen himself, actually, and his thoughts wandered back to when he and Nell had raided the food court at the mall and then went to the movies. "I think there are quite a few in the Hollow," he replied. "The city down near the Academy." It was possible that she knew of Maple Hollow or even lived there, like he did, but he'd never found out such personal information about her before. He didn't ask questions like that of his friends unless they were making plans to get together or something. Hell, even a lot of his friends didn't know where he lived. As a secretive person it was second nature for him to keep things hidden from people. "Why do you ask?" He hoped that she didn't mind the inquiry, he was just wondering at why she'd wanted to know. It had seemed random after he'd only just greeted him, after all. The mention of Dairy Queen put him onto the thoughts of their delicious ice cream and the fudge-topped sundaes--suddenly the brownies, tasty as they were, didn't seem quite so tempting. He had half a mind to go into the Hollow right now just for the sake of a sundae but then reminded himself it was not polite to just up and leave in the middle of a conversation with someone.
So, after taking another bite of the brownie and swallowing carefully, he glanced toward her. His gray eyes were light and while they were not what you would usually call friendly, his gaze was certainly not hostile. He wanted to ask her if she was new to Canada and where she had come from, but decided that he would reserve those more significant questions for later in the conversation if it went well. He always felt strange asking questions and with Kyra it was amplified--she was so shy around him that he didn't want to frighten her off by saying the wrong thing. But her company was still relaxing. She wasn't in his face and demanding to know things about him, which was precisely what he looked for in people. Instead, he tried to ask something a little less specific. "Is the food not to your tastes today or something?" He gestured mildly toward what she was eating, his attitude questioning but light. He had assumed that because she was eating it that it must taste alright, though of course he was unable to compare anything but the brownies since he himself was not hungry. In his past experiences with Academy food, though, he was not prejudice toward them. They didn't have evil lunch ladies or mystery meat--nothing like the stereotypes of high school food. It was usually pretty good, he was just not in the mood for eating. Maybe Kyra was the same way. Maybe she just wanted to know. He wasn't sure, and that was why he'd asked.

[/div] missing me? “Oh.” Kyra mumbled to his information of being fine. She didn’t know what else to say, or what someone was supposed to say. “I hope it gets even better.” Was what she finally settled on. It was a little lame even she knew, but for someone like her to even talk to a guy, it was special. It was probably the way this one minded his steps around her. Kyra didn’t think he was a bad person. It was less of a conscious thought that all men were not to be trusted-though she had that too-as it was a subconscious feeling that made her unable to be around them. A mislead Gut feeling stemming from feelings from the past.
When he told her of the food court, Kyra perked up a little. “Oh? Um yeah. My brother lives there” She said, explaining why she knew the town before closing her mouth swiftly and looking back down to her brownie. She took another nibble as an excuse to fill the silence. Not that it was awkward. Kyra found it nice and relaxing, even though many were uncomfortable with it. That was just how the more quieter people worked she supposed. Yes, Kyra could be talkative. Well, she thought she could be. The only person she couldn’t seem to shut up around was her brother now that she finally trusted him. When the question of why she asked came from Joshua, Kyra looked back up with wide eyes. It wasn’t that she was surprised though, Kyra just had large eyes that made her either always look concerned or curious. Her brother said it was cute but she had been told by others that it was weird or annoying.
“Um,” Kyra started out her answer like she seemed to start out every conversation. “I got to try it a month ago and it tasted really good. But, I haven’t gotten to eat there for a while.” This time there was the small improvement in that she didn’t stutter from being too terribly nervous. She had never tasted it before her brother took her. Though it may seem weird to be so old and never have it before, Kyra wasn’t exactly in an environment where stuff like that was apparent. But DairyQueen even had a new flavor of blizzard each month. That thought brightened her mood. She wondered what flavor it was this month.
Kyra realized she had looked away in her thoughts. When she looked back at him she noticed he was looking at her. He had pretty eyes. When Kyra had that thought she put her head back down in the position it was usually found in. At least he wasn’t looking at her with a mean look. Another question had her looking back up to him. “Oh, no. It’s really good.” She said and to her it was true. She wanted to make sure he knew it wasn’t the food that made her ask.
Playing with the edge of her dress Kyra wondered why Joshua had chosen to sit next to her. Was he expecting her to be more interesting or to hold a conversation like others would. Things about Celeberties or Movies? Kyra was less than educated in those type of things. When another moment passed Kyra felt th ened to mumble: “Sorry.” And rub her arm as if she was cold. She wasn’t, but it was a habit she had when at a loss for words, a sort of fidgeting. “I’m not that good at talking or um, holding conversations or... people in general.” She apologized for the lack of conversation, hoping he wasn’t frustrated with her or something.

The way she'd said that her brother lived in the Hollow suggested that she wasn't staying with him or he wasn't staying with their parents, but out of respect for privacy as usual Joshua did not inquire to sate his curiosity. After all, he was not living with his parents at the moment and if anyone asked him why he would lie through his teeth. He wouldn't admit that he was staying with Nell, either. Not that he didn't love his girlfriend--he did, dearly--he just didn't want to admit that he had to rely on anyone else. It was different when it had been his Mum and Dad, like they were obligated to let him stay there because he was their son. Nell was doing it out of generosity and that sort of thing made him uncomfortable. So he kept the thought to himself. Instead, he said, "I'm from the Hollow, so I know my way around." He didn't mind admitting that he lived in the city he just didn't like to specify where. He wouldn't even give the neighbourhood if asked--or, if he wanted to look less suspicious, he would lie. Most people didn't assume that he came from a lot of money unless they saw his car or recognised that his jacket was actually from Marc Jacobs collection, for example.
He nodded as if to show that her explanation made sense. He liked Dairy Queen himself and so he could understand why someone might want to know of the locations if it was a favourite. I could really go for some sea salted fries at Wendy's right now, he thought absently. Damn, now he was starting to feel a little hungry. In the silence following her answer Joshua's mind was on food and on the gas tank of his Lamborghini. Did Harper have enough juice to go all the way to the nearest Wendy's and back without refills? Probably not, he mused. I could top up at the gas station across the road from it. Yes, that sounded like a good idea. He made plans to head to Wendy's after school and wondered if he should ring Nell and invite her along, knowing the girl's love of food. Her classes end later than mine today, I think. She was still on the twelfth grade schedule of course and Joshua just had his classes sporadically throughout the day depending. Deciding that he would work out all of the details later, he focused himself on the conversation. He didn't want to be rude and space out or anything, even if he was just naturally a quiet person.
He blinked at her when she apologised for how quiet she was being. Truthfully, Joshua hadn't noticed or cared all that much. He was so used to silences that they seemed natural to him and he was surprised that someone would apologise for something like that. Then again, some were much more talkative than he and might expect more from Kyra than she could give. He wasn't like that. Offering her a rare smile, he pointed out, "I don't say much myself." It wasn't because he was particularly awkward, per say, it was just his loner personality. In return he hoped that Kyra didn't mind if he seemed not to be trying too hard to talk to her. Honestly, Josh wasn't rude if he was fond of you. He quite liked what he'd seen of Kyra so far from the few times he'd hung around her--he liked that she was quiet because it meant he didn't make much of an effort. But he didn't bother pointing all of this out--he wasn't good on the subject of feelings--and he certainly didn't apologise for his own silence. Josh wasn't apologetic.
Since she had pointed out herself that she wasn't very good at holding conversation, he decided that he'd just go on being polite and friendly in the hopes that he wouldn't make it too hard for her. "What do you usually get at Dairy Queen?" he asked. Then, so that she understood he wasn't going to interrogate her about her own preferences with nothing in return, he said, "I'm partial to their hot fudge sundaes, myself." He loved chocolate and ice cream and anything sweet, really. Sundaes--especially when you added strawberries, peanuts, or both to the hot fudge--were a must in his junk food cravings.

[/div] missing me? In response to his comment on not saying much himself, Kyra nodded her head lamely. It was as if her lack of any real response furthered both of their arguments of being less than social. She didn’t mind that he didn’t talk much. On the contrary, it wouldn’t make much sense if she did, being the quiet person she was. His lack of apprarent social skill was also likely the cause of her comfort around him. Well, not exactly comfortable, but she wasn’t as afraid of him as she felt she should be. Feeling she didn’t need to respond further to his statement, and also feeling the moment had passed during her brief reverie, she chose to direct her attention back to the rice instead. A brief period of time passed before another word was spoken between them. To no surprise, it was him who initated the conversation, if it could even be called that.
It didn’t take Kyra long to think of an answer to his question. “Um.. The blizzards. They had a Pecan pie one and that was nice.” It was a monthly flavor, but it was also the flavor that made Kyra branch out to try more. Since then she’d also fallen for the Georgia Mud Fudge blizzard, replacing the brownie bits with Cookie dough, and the Turtle Pecan cluster with additional cookie dough bits. The flavors were new and unique to her. And, even though she didn’t much care for sweets, they were mellow enough for her to stand.
It was a Friday Kyra realized, and it would be nice to try and find a DairyQueen to eat at on her way to stay at her brothers house. She would be staying alone thanks to a recent case of his located in the united states, but it would still be nicer than staying in a dormitory with other people she did not know. On the spur, Kyra took out her Cellphone. Her brother got it for her. It was a Sprint LG Rumor Touch. It looked expensive, but that didn’t mean anything considering everything looked like that to her. So far she knew how to add a contact, call somebody and send a Text message. Kyra heard she had Date service or something, and that included a map. She should be able to find the restaurant that way.
A few moments passed by of Kyra trying to find the map screen. It seemed to almost be futile. Everywhere she tried to poke on the screen, she got the wrong thing. It was expected with someone as computer illiterate as her. Getting slightly frustrated, Kyra halted her attempts. She would never find the Dairyqueen without her GPS, even if she had the address. Once again her blue eyes found their way to Joshua. She looked back down, thinking that she shouldn’t bother him twice in one sitting with useless Questions. But, another minute ticked by and Kyra decided to take a chance. “Um… I’m sorry if im bothering you... you don’t have to help but I was wondering if you knew how to get the map menu on a cellphone?” Kyra showed him her cellphone. Right now she had the contacts page up, with only two contacts saved. One was her brothers house number, and the other was her brothers Cellphone. She held it loosely so he could take it if he wanted, but tight enough that she didn’t drop it as she looked down at her lap, embarrassed and feeling bad for bothering him so much. She only hoped he didn’t think she was obnoxious or annoying.

Sitting with Kyra was as easy and effortless as he had expected it to be. It was almost selfish to desire the company of someone so quiet and reserved--not because she didn't talk much, but because his presence might have made her uncomfortable. Joshua wasn't so oblivious that he'd never noticed the way she sometimes flinched away from him, at least when they'd first become acquainted. He didn't understand why but in his mind she seemed to be a bit better now and so he figured that it was alright to sit here. Josh had never been particularly empathetic. It might have been kinder and more sensitive to go find someone else's company but he had wanted someone who wouldn't talk his ear off or expect him to do the same, so he'd chosen her. If she had a problem with that she'd tell him, right? Probably not, but Joshua didn't bother thinking along those lines. He had convinced himself that it was fine and sometimes his own approval was all Joshua needed.
Though he normally ate any sort of junk food with fervour, Josh savoured the brownies seeing as they were the only thing that the mess hall had to his tastes that afternoon. He might not have been hungry but he could always go for something chocolatey or otherwise sweet. Dark chocolate and anything with peppermint were some of his favourites. Dark chocolate and peppermint was almost too good to exist. Speaking of Dairy Queen, maybe he'd stop by it on the way to Wendy's. Or was there a Wendy's before a Dairy Queen? He brought up his mental map of the Hollow's streets, the streets of his childhood, tried to remember the views out of car windows. He knew his way around of course but as there were a few of each fast food place it took him a moment to deduce that he could safely get his Wendy's and then hit the drive through of DQ for a sundae of some sort. Preferably something with peppermint. Or maybe one of their cakes, he thought, the idea of it delighting him. I've always loved--
He was snapped out of his thoughts by Kyra, whom he blinked at in surprise before he focused and listened to what she was saying. The map feature? Well, they had different phones but Joshua was pretty sure it wouldn't be hard to find. He was alright with technology, after all. Wasn't the greatest and probably couldn't fix a phone if it was broken, but he was good enough to master the basics. "D'you mind if I...?" He gestured at the phone and then took it lightly, not wanting to be too forceful or anything. The less direct words and actions were a subtle switch from his usual personality that was almost subconscious. He'd certainly not been quite so careful around her when they'd first met, but he was learning at least. He was doing pretty well for someone that had no idea what Kyra's issues were in the first place.
Frowning at the phone thoughtfully, he backed out of the page she had up and searched around a bit. He was very careful to avoid clicking on anything personal like her messages or her information seeing as he was only here to look for the map. It did not take long before he mumbled a quiet, "Aha," and offered Kyra a smile. "This is it," he said, showing her and holding it out so that she could take it back. "Do you know how to work it?" He wasn't trying to imply that the girl was an idiot, of course, but if she couldn't find the map menu that meant that she'd never used it on her phone before, didn't it? Either that or she was just very forgetful. He almost found himself asking where she planned to go but then reminded himself that it was a personal question and shot it down.
