It was September and the leaves were just starting to change from green to reds and oranges as rich as jewels from the most brilliant of stones with the help of some cooler days they'd recently had. It was a beautiful day. The sky was blue and the sun was shining, bouncing golden light off of the lake and onto the grounds around it. The air had a hint of autumn crispness and nippy days were soon to come. Cold air was something Juliet never did get used to even after spending the past few years in Canada. The fall was fine, but the moment the leaves were gone leaving the frail corpses of the trees that once loomed high and mighty during the summer months Juliet tended to become depressed. But that time wasn't now. Now it was just the start of a beautiful early autumn day and she was dead set on enjoying it.
The few fallen leaves crunched under Jule's feet as she walked to the lake just as she had every day. It was her favorite place at the Academy and tended to be on the quieter side. But it wasn't the quiet that drew her there. But instead the water. It was the biggest body of water within walking distance and by far the biggest on campus. It wasn't her ocean, but it would do for now. Juliet sighed as she reached the lake. It was so flat, so still and undisturbed. Not a wave or a ripple. She wanted to jump in it just to make it move. Make sure it was still alive. Will it to be the ocean she missed so badly. If only lakes had waves. Then at least she could surf.
The best part about the lake was her tree. A big oak tree with strong branches, her favorite branch, a branch that reached over the water. The crook of it was the perfect place to write a letter or read a book or spy on the idiots who thought they were alone.
Jules hoisted herself up the trunk of the tree. Climbing higher and higher. Today she wanted a view of the trees. She wanted to look at them before they lost their leaves and the beautiful landscape became dull and lifeless. It always did happen too fast...
She climbed, one branch and then the next like she had so many times before. Suddenly, she heard a noise she wasn't familiar with. The heart stopping cracking of a branch. Shit. fuck. fuck. fuckity fuck fuck shit shit shit! The branch snapped and Jules slid quickly from it falling. Branches smacked into her until finally she caught herself on the lowest branch below, the one that reached over the water. She landed hard on her stomach, the branch knocking the wind out of it, the adrenaline the only thing keeping her holding on. Upon catching her breath she could start to feel the pain come in. Shit. She gasped for air. She could hear the sound of quick footsteps. Someone was coming towards her. They must have seen. She could hear them running fast but they were coming from the other way.
She wasn't sure if she wanted help or not. Her face was flushing with embarrassment. Her pride had been tarnished.

Fall was different in Canada. Though she didn’t notice too much of it back in the city, here it was all around. My first autumn of freedom. A sort-of freedom, a flimsy thing that could be taken away from her at any moment. At the end of the year, actually. But for now, as she always did, she focused on the present—she looked up at the colorful foliage, her favorite part of fall. She enjoyed the feeling, the chill that made her throw on an old Varsity jacket she got from the thrift store last winter. She enjoyed just taking walks around when she finished up all her work, but usually she had someone with her. Nell hated being alone with her thoughts, so if she was ever going somewhere she’d ask her friends if they wanted to come along with.
However, since it was so peaceful and the girl she’d just been studying with needed to go home, she decided why not to stroll the Academy grounds alone. She really thought of it as her home, other than the apartment where Pablo was. Canada was her home, and it was ironic considering she wasn’t even legally there. She let out a soft, content sigh, but unfortunately she couldn’t form a cloud in the coldy air. Nell thought of her friends who’d pretend they were smoking, even when they usually did smoke. As she crossed the lake, she looked for rocks along the shore to find a flat one to skip. Even though she really didn’t know how to skip rocks, she tried. She didn’t even know how to swim, actually.
Her peace was interrupted by what sounded like branches cracking, and she looked over to find that it was her friend, Juliet...crashing down through a tree. Nell’s eyes grew wide, and she hurried over to the tree, crushing fallen leaves beneath her sneakers. ”Jules, are you all right?” she called up, anxiety apparent in her voice and her scrunched together eyebrows. ”Uhh…let me get you down from there.” She used her powers to grow out one of the branches below Juliet and made it flexible enough to gently wrap around her waist and pull her down, setting her on the leaf covered ground. The branch returned to normal, Nell asked, ”Are you hurt? Do you want to go to the medical wing?”
She was always worried whenever her friends got hurt. Very worried. Even when they were completely fine, because health was a big issue for her. But she didn’t let that on too much—unless she outright told you, you wouldn’t tell that she was a health nut. She didn’t want to seem like an overbearing freak of nature, as Tilly used to call her. And so, just so she wouldn’t seem like the complete mother hen she was, she added humor by saying, ”You should leave the tree climbing to us Earthies.” She gave Juliet her brightest smile to accompany it.

Thank GOD it was Nell running to her rescue and not someone else. Oh Nell. So wonderful and with the best timing out of anyone she'd ever met, at least at that very moment. Jules looked down at her good friend. She looked more shaken up then Jules felt. She chuckled and sighed. "Yeah I'm fine." She promised through breathy words as Nell grew the branch and wrapped it around Jules lowering her down.
"I think I'm ok...." She said though she could already feel throbbing around her ribs. Wonderful, just what she needed. She'd broken ribs before, amusingly enough not in such a different situation than the one she was in today. That time she'd been climbing rocks and fell. She tended to fall out of things a lot. Juliet really didn't have any business climbing anything with her track record but that wouldn't stop her call it stupidity or pride. The girl couldn't be stopped. But it made her laugh hearing Nell's joke. "You know... you're probably right." She grimaced then met Nell's smile.
"I don't think my ribs are broken..." She said lifting up her shirt to take a look. A little swollen, VERY red. "No if they were broken I probably wouldn't be standing. Probably just bruised." She assessed happily before looking over at Nell. Her sides still hurt like a bitch. Every time she took a breath it felt like she was being punched but she was doing her best not to let the pain show up on her face for Nell's sake. She didn't want her to worry. She'd go to the medical building later if she felt the need but she was sure that they'd just give her ice anyway. ICE! That much she could do... kind of.
Jules went over to the water and focused trying to manipulate it into ice. She'd only just started learning this and knew she could make the water insanely cold but ice was harder. But she'd done it before. At least she had in class. She closed her eyes and concentrated hard. After a few minutes she had enough ice to get her by for now. She took off her shirt and wrapped it in ice before pressing it against her ribs. "There! Good as new!" She smiled at Nell.

Nell was now skeptical whenever someone said they were ‘all right’ or ‘fine’, and it was most likely Josh’s influence. Or maybe the knowledge that whenever she said she was fine, sometimes she wasn’t. Lately more than ever. But she kept telling herself not to be overbearing and going off in an overprotective spiel, fussing over the girl who looked pretty out of it for someone who said they were ‘ok’. ”Can’t blame you though,” Nell said, her voice airy, though now with more concern than usual, ”Climbing trees is awfully fun.” In the past, when she’d sneak out, she would cimb the park trees to stay out of trouble. She wasn’t completely unaware of how dangerous the South Bronx was. She could give herself that much now, whenever she beat herself up for being so damn stupid when she was younger.
The creases in her forehead only deepened like ruts in a field when the girl pulled up her shirt. ”That’s still bad,” she said, lifting her eyebrows. She wasn’t going to poke the girl in the stomach to check and make sure—she was pretty sure no medical proffessional would do that. ”Seriously, if you don’t feel good,” Nel trailed off, still trying not to be ridiculously pushy or anything. She know how she felt when other people tried to tell her what to do. It didn’t really annoy her—it took a helluva a lot for that—but it made her a bit uncomfortable. She was a private person, and she liked everyone to see her as a strong and someone to rely on. So she could see why Juliet wouldn’t want to go to the medical wing.
The Earth girl was surprised to see her manipulate ice. ”Oh jeez, you can do that now?” Nell thought any show of elemental prowess amazing, especially graduate level stuff. She tried not to think of one person she had seen use ice, because thinking of Jane made her feel sick and she would like to ignore her for as long as possible. In any case, she was more than excited to watch what Juliet was doing. But she laughed when the Water elemental wrapped the ice around her waist. ”You’re going to walk around with that?” she asked, tilting her head while giggling. She admired that Juliet could do that with confidence—Nell had her scars to hide, the word under her naval that didn’t allow her to wear bikinis. ”All right, I won’t force you to march down to the medical wing, but I have my eye on you.” She playfully made the hand gesture, pointing her fingers at her eyes and then Juliet’s. Then, still smiling, she asked, ”So what were you doing up there, squirrel monkey?” She didn’t think tree climbing was most people’s idea of fun, even though she indulged in it. Once she was harrassed by Cynthia, actually, and that thought wasn’t very pleasant either, now that the Thunder leader had passed.

Jules waved her off. "I'm fine I'm fine." She laughed though breathing was a bit hard. "Just got the wind knocked out of me." She said pressing the ice rag against her side frowning when she found the ice had turned back into water. She'd tried but just like last time she tried to do something so advanced, it took for a minute before failing and just turning into very cold water. But she didn't need Nell to know that. She loved her friend but Jules still liked to impress people and pretend to be more advanced than she actually is. "Oh yeah it's nothing." She shrugged. "Just a little something I picked up."
She looked over at her friend. She really did think Nell was one of the prettiest girls in the school, sometimes it pissed her off. She was so sweet and understated that it made her more gorgeous. But then she also felt proud. Her friend was one of the prettiest! She nodded and laughed. "Oww! Ow laughing hurts!" SHe laughed harder. It really did kill. "Yeah I'm going to walk around like this! What's the big deal? A bikini are the same thing basically." She pointed out.
Squirrel monkey? She giggled then sighed. "I thought it'd be a good place to write a letter... but I think I'll stick to just writing to my grandfather in my room I think..." She decided. It really would have been the perfect place. She loved that spot but now it seemed much more unappealing. "What are you doing out here though? No Josh today?" She asked raising a brow.

True to Jules’ words she sounded exhausted. ”I’ll believe you,” Nell said with a small smile. I’ll just watch you like a freaking hawk. Her outward expression never revealed internal feelings—good thing she usually thought of pleasant things. Nell noticed the shirt soaking through with water, but she gave no sign of having realized anything. Instead, she said with eagerness, ”You’re too modest, Jules. Seriously, that’s amazing. You’re already starying college level stuff.” Nell knew she was going to have to wait a bit herself—she wasn’t the strongest twelfth grader, that was for sure. And even though she’d certainyl gotten a heck of a lot stronger, she knew she had so much more to learn. And she was more than fine with that.
Nell thankfully overcame the urge to flap her arms in alarm at her friend’s sudden exclamations of pain, because she was laughing along with her. Of course, she felt bad about it and covered her mouth. She’d read somewhere that people feel inclined to laugh at other’s misfortunes the most, but she didn’t want to be like that. She removed her hand from her mouth. ”Try not to do that.” The Earth girl was only half-joking. She bit back a Spongebob laugh box reference, just in case Jules didn’t get it and looked at her strangely. Instead, she pointed to Jules as if acknowledging her words. ”Touche.” It was a fact—sometime Nell wondered why people just didn’t swim in their undies. ”But usually people don’t wear bikinis in fall.” She grinned, even though she was always concerned about health.
Nell blinked up at the tree, then met Jules’ eyes before shaking her head and laughing a little. ”A letter? But hey, if you like to hang out in trees, I can’t judge.” An Earthie certainly had no right to do so. ”How is your grandafather, anyway?” Jules spoke of him before, and Nell was always interested in others’ families as long as she knew it was an okay subject for the person. ”Nope, no Josh,” Nell said with a smile. The two had separate lives, and he was probably busy with his double major or something right then. ”Actually, I was just taking a walk. Singing show tunes, talking to the birds.” She chuckled. ”I finished my work early because I’m cool like that.” She nodded with a feigned cocky smirk before seriously asking, ”Wanna come with?” Nell jerked her head toward nothing in particular since she didn’t have anywhere to go.
