Nell was an early riser for as long as she could remember. When she and Tilly slept next to each other, she’d be the first one up, bouncing on the bed to wake the other girl. Who would groan, turn over, and call her a freak of nature. And she always awoke before her mother. That way she could sneak out in the early hours of the morning when the streets were a lot less dangerous to be walking. At least she had some common sense then, but not a lot. She guessed no matter how much things change, a lot stays the same.
Like her early morning energy. Always in a good mood when she got up, it only took a few seconds before disorientation wore off and she was up making coffee and feeding Pablo while huming a song. Josh had experienced this first-hand whenever she slept over. Barring the one time she would rather forget, the argument where she’d made herself look like the biggest bitch there ever was. But that hadn’t been because it was early in the morning. That was because she followed her gut instincts when she should have just trusted her boyfriend like any girl who’d done it before would have thought to do. But you won’t make another mistake like that, because you learned. She guessed the fact that she’d screwed up big time before helped her anxiety when Josh had been avoiding her in August, that maybe she’d done something terrible without realizing. And in a way, she had. She was the reason that his father kicked him out, and she really wished she didn’t have to have such depressing thoughts so early waking up.
That’s probably why she enjoyed running with Ben so much, especially when it was so early in the morning. It took her mind off of things, especially when she was with someone. Because when she was alone, she thought and thinking about the past and the future was not a good thing for her to do. So as she plopped down on the sand next to the lake, she took quite a few deep breaths before attempting to speak. Pulling her earbuds out, Nell said, ”Is it bad that I want to do is gorge myself on food right now?” As if she wasn’t already hungry all the time, exercizing sure helped in that department. But it was necessary for her and her diet. Besides, she enjoyed it as well, especially when she had Benny as company. ”At least the temperatures are cooling off for fall,” she observed, leaning back and shaking sand off her shoelaces. The sweatshirt she wore was good defense against the cooler temperatures, but now that they weren't moving around goose flesh bloomed on her unprotected legs. Sending a bright smile at Ben as she twisted the cap off her water bottle, she sing-songed, ”Oh, it’s a lovely day in the neighborhood.” She couldn’t help chuckling after saying it, before actually proving herself capable of serious conversation. ”Have any plans for today?”

on the topic of music, one of the things that made ben in such bright spirits half the time was his favourite personal band, panic! at the disco. when he had first started listening to them so many years ago, many complained that their lyrics made no sense to the general population, which made ben question if he was crazy. then again, lady gaga did not make sense to him with her lyrics, but no one complained about that. nonetheless, he adored the band and if he ever had the chance to actually listen to them live, was sure he would pee himself with happiness. thoughts of his band dwindled as he noticed nell slowing down, forcing himself to do the same. as she sat down on the shore of the lakeside beach at maple hollow, ben followed her, removing his ear buds as he did so, and just in time.
with her question, ben found himself laughing. if nell ever asked him to guess what was on her mind, ben would probably reply food and would probably get it right. "to each their own i suppose." he replied to the question. "is it bad that i want to swim right now despite knowing it is probably freezing?" he returned the question, though his was easy to answer. he was a water element and of course would want to swim, despite the temperature. just like that, temperature was nell's next topic and ben wondered if she had read his mind. nodding in agreement, he decided against asking.
with another laugh escaping his lips as she sang, he rolled his eyes. nell was priceless... and odd. though, she was able to take a funny situation and ask the technical questions ben found annoying, though better than introduction questions. "i will probably attempt to get some school work done, fail miserably and end up swimming or something." the something would be painting or drawing, a secret addiction of ben's. he had a rule against outward expression, but once alone, was free to do as he pleased. glancing at nell, he wondered if he would ever reveal this part of him. i mean really, who knew ben was artistic?

Nell rolled her eyes aat Ben’s response, stretching her arms out over her legs. She liked how it felt after exercising, her muscles unwinding and the sweet restful feeling in her body was a nice change from the anxiety she felt. Maybe she needed to get a massage or something. Dealing with both her father and Jane has had her rather stressed out lately, but she didn’t let it affect her relationships and conversations with her friends, especially not Ben. ”Yeah, it is. Think you might want to get that checked out,” she teased. ”I’m not one to judge you guys.” She used the vague, safe term since they were in Maple Hollow in her joking. Ever since Josh told her that there weren’t as many elementals as she first thought there were and it was the government’s fault, she was extra careful what she said when in the presence of non-elementals. She didn’t want to be kidnapped from the very people she was trying to avoid for other reasons. The government machine was causing too many problems for her.
Giggling at her friend’s words, she said, ”You are quite the overachiever.” She enjoyed him and his easygoing personality, of course. It was a Water thing, she noticed, but he did it especially well. Then, she thought of something, wondering if she should inform Ben. She was a private person, but it wasn’t anything too private. It just made her feel…weird. Nell liked Benny, she really did, but it was hard to reveal things about herself. But she also realized it was similar for other people, and it made her happy she just wasn’t strange. She decided against filling him in on how horrible of a swimmer she was, instead she opted to say, ”If you catch a cold, I’ll make you chicken noodle soup.” It wasn’t too good an idea to go swimming when it was so cold out, but what was it like with Water elementals? She didn’t really know. She was still overly concerend about other people’s
Nell looked up at the sky, which was pretty clear. It would probably turn out to be a nice day. ”Well…I was seeing someone doing yardwork and piling all the leaves together, and I thought, wouldn’t it be cool to just make a giant mound of leaves and jump into it. And I mean olympic swimming pool big, so there aren’t any broken bones.” She added in some hand gestures to accompany her words, just to show her excitement about this plan. Nell had seen kids do it before after their parents raked the lawn, scattering leaves everywhere. ”You up for that? It’d take a bit of work, but hey, what’s fun without the work?” She never complained about anything, and putting labor into doing something fun was of course something she wouldn’t gripe about. ”And hey, we can just get a bunch of people together and set a world record.” A lot of her ideas were stupid, but she was hoping this one wouldn’t be as bad as, say, filling a mall fountain with fish and then falling into said fountain.
