=- = - =- =- =- =- =- =- =- =- = Tyson checked his watch; lessons were nearly over for the day. It was already rather quite but he knew there would be a rush for the exits in around half an hour. It didn’t matter much to Tyson, he didn’t intend to be here that much longer but this particular assignment had him banging his head against the wall, nearly literally at one point. He was sat on a desk with his feet propped up on a chair in front of it as he stared blankly at the whiteboard. His lecturer had graciously allowed him to use his classroom whenever it was empty. It was an offer Tyson didn’t usually take him up on but in recent weeks with his assignments getting that much harder he had found himself relishing the extra space of the whiteboard and the creative space of an empty classroom to pace.
Right now, the board was full of complex equations that all lead to dead ends. Tyson was convinced he was missing something; it was an aspect to self taught modules that annoyed him. He doubted he was even applying the method correctly not to mention the various other equations that he could have gotten wrong. He let out a sign of frustration as he checked his phone. As he flicked it on, he felt a twinge as the electrons moved from the battery supply to the screen. Tyson couldn’t wait to get out of here and into a research lab to get a better understanding of his ability. He often pondered if Nikola Tesla or Thomas Edison were thunder elementals because of their work on electricity. He had no messages or missed calls, he thought he was on shift tonight but his boss would have texted him to let him know. He checked the time, he’d wait another hour before calling to ask if he was needed.
The bell broke his chain of thought, his concentration had already been wavering at this point but now it had been lost completely. He jumped off the desk and strode towards the whiteboard, grabbing the duster as he went. Taking one last look at it, he shook his head. He’d tackle it tomorrow, when he hadn’t already endured a full day of lectures amongst various stressful conversations. He gathered his things into his bag, pulling out a previously completed assignment and leaving it on the desk for his lecturer as he swung the strap over his shoulder and headed for the door. He pondered whether there was time to drop by a coffee shop on the way home and read some more of that book one of his classmates had recommended to him. =- =- =- =- =- =- =- =- =- =- = Outfit: HERE Notes: Fist post on site! :3

[Since summer = no Academy boards open we can just say that this thread is in August, which is two days from now xD]
Having a double major was stressful. It was hell. Some days Joshua whole-heartedly regretted his decision to tackle two main subjects at once. At the end of the day, however, he couldn't really blame himself for what he had done. History had always been his favourite subject but it wouldn't really get him anywhere with his aspiration of becoming a doctor so he had been backed into a corner as to what he was going to do. Josh figured that he could always just drop his history-based classes if he really felt the pressure but he had a feeling that he would never do something such as that. It was pride, mostly, pride that would definitely not allow him to admit defeat. So he stayed behind extra hours during school most days even though classes had just kicked back in after the summer holidays and finished his papers, studied on his own time--basically everything he'd done in high school times ten. A hand ran anxiously through jet black hair as he slammed the book in front of him shut. This is not happening. His brain felt like it was fried. He'd arrived here this morning a few hours before school had started and it felt like he hadn't been given breathing space since. He would work more on this at home later; for now, he was taking a break.
He had left the library and was heading toward the stairs to go to a different floor when the door of the classroom he was about to pass opened. Joshua paused in order to avoid a collision with the person emerging, fully intending to just swerve around them and walk on by as soon as he knew there was no danger of impact. He had not, therefore, expected to recognise the individual. "Oh... Tyson," he said with mild surprise, abandoning the use of a nickname due to the formality of the half-greeting. He hadn't spoken to him in a bit and was still unsure about the standing with him due to the split between alliances but thus far it hadn't seemed to affect their friendship, so he didn't allow it to bother him too much. "What were you doing in there?" He wasn't attempting to pry--indeed, if Tai didn't want to tell him what he'd been up to then Josh wouldn't think anything of it. The Fire graduate was very secretive and tended to avoid talking about anything personal. Not that many things done inside of the Academy were personal. Maybe he'd been sitting a detention or had just been the very last to leave the room. The hallway had seemed deserted and so this wasn't too likely, but it was at least possible.
That is, it had been deserted a moment ago. Since the bell had rang quite recently there were sure to be students flooding the halls and going every which-way to get to their classes. Ignoring this and trying not to think about alliances, he said, "How've you been?" It was a friendly enough question and was certainly only asked because of the fact that he knew this other boy well enough to trust him. Conversation was always difficult between Josh and someone he was not well acquainted with. He and Nell had nightmare experiences to look back on together. That was something else he tried his best to avoid thinking of.

=- = - =- =- =- =- =- =- =- =- = The book in question was a diary, of sorts, about a comedians visit to CERN in Switzerland. Having a degree in physics, the author clearly knew his stuff when it came to the Large Hadron Collider but his career in stand up comedy had made the book a humorous read. Seemingly simple machines or tasks were made to seem far grander and sometimes more dangerous as he was shown around the facility over the course of a week. Tai was around halfway though, but was getting to the best bit. At least in his opinion anyway, it was hard to convince people who weren’t into the subject matter that it was a good read, regardless of their previous knowledge of physics or CERN.
Tyson then stopped abruptly as he left the classroom, avoiding collision with another student as he turned to face the individual. ”Sorry...” But he cut himself off as he realised who it was. Tyson hadn’t seen much of Joshua over the summer break, despite himself having to attend some lectures for the purposes of his research paper during the summer holidays. Tyson wasn’t fully aware of everything that was happening with regards to the alliances within the academy and some argued with him that as one of the oldest thunder students in the academy, he should be fully up to date and setting an example. But in truth, despite not having all the facts, Joshua wasn’t someone he would let confrontations of a more grand nature come between them. ”Josh.” He said calmly, nodding as a form of greeting. Joshua was somebody Tyson had learnt to respect over the few years he had know him, despite being in a lower grade the pair had a few things in common. ”Handing in some summer homework, first week back and all.” Tyson said with a light chuckle, shifting his weight slightly to the right.
The bell still rang softly in Tyson’s ear, a polite reminder that the corridors would soon be swamped with students eager to be free. It didn’t stop him from offering Joshua his hand in greeting. ”I’ve been goods thanks, despite the workload.” He said, casually bringing up the topic of school work. ”Yourself?” In truth, these questions were simple formalities and all told, Tyson pondered if Joshua thought the same at times. Tyson glanced at a clock on the wall behind Joshua, pondering if he now had no choice but to head home and wait for his boss to call, the coffee shop would undoubtedly be closing in an hour or so. =- =- =- =- =- =- =- =- =- =- = Outfit: HERE Notes: haha, caught red handed, but ty (:

Josh relaxed slightly when he realised that Tyson was not hostile, chuckling when the other male told him what he was up to. "Of course." He had done most of his summer work earlier in the month of July because he hadn't had many friends to hang out with and had simply spent his time working on it. It was a bit pathetic that working had still been the highlight of his day in the beginning but in hindsight it had at least saved him from dreaded last-minute rushing, and it had also left his last couple weeks free for the vacation with Nell and his family. Though her allergies had caused some problems it had still been a fun week overall. He was glad that he could have that sort of fun with Nell, really. "First week's always hell with the shift in subjects." You had to get used to your new schedule and become better acquainted with the people teaching you, learn what they expected of assignments and the like. Josh was pretty good at getting in the positive range of his professors, namely because he did all of his work and didn't act obnoxious in his classes. He was not--and would never be--of the teachers pet stereotype, but he survived. That was all you could really ask for, right?
They were indeed formalities of conversation, but Josh was growing used to the fact that such things must be addressed when you haven't seen someone for a while. He took Tyson's hand and shook it--no hard feelings, that much was clear. He might have had a grudge against Tai's element as a whole thanks to what they had done to Nell but he didn't think that Tyson was the type to participate in such unjust and petty things, so the grudge did not extend to his friend. They were better than this, both of them, it wasn't like they were going to dissolve into fighting because of something that had happened months ago. "I've been good as well," he said, then cracked the slightest hint of a smile. Josh wasn't a person that smiled often but it really did add character to his words as he said, "I don't mind the work too much. Keeping busy is a good thing." This was true. Anyone that knew Joshua well knew of his intelligence and the fact that he was an ambitious and driven person. He wanted to carve his path in life and he wanted to do it without help or any sort of cheating and so he applied himself to his studies as much as possible.
Deciding to drop formalities just a little so that they could relax around one another for real, Josh said, "So what are your plans for the day, hmm?" He didn't really have anything planned himself--Josh had been about to go home, but he could be persuaded to do other things if a friend was up for it. "Maybe we could hang out." He didn't use catch-up sessions with his friends as some sort of a gossip session. No, that was a girl's thing in his opinion. Except when he'd asked Asha if the rumours about she and the Earth leader were true, he didn't put much stock in gossip. The things people said about him! Judging by the fact that Tai was both older and that he stuck around, Josh was confident in the idea that the Thunder elemental was mature enough to be above that. "I'm just coming from the library myself. Had last period free." He had quite a few study periods across the semesters, but that was not necessarily an exciting thing. Unlike a lot of people who went home early during their study periods or just hung out with friends that shared them, Josh stuck to what they were for. Studying. It might have been boring, but he was used to that by now.

=- = - =- =- =- =- =- =- =- =- = Tyson had set himself a schedule as per how to tackle his summer workload which, naturally, he had completely ignored. It wasn’t all down to his lack of motivation as things just happened to pop up as he was about to get stuck into a long homework session. It was a miracle that he had managed to get the bulk of it done this past month, but it had required many trips to the library, more than he cared to admit. Tyson nodded in agreement with Joshua. ”Aye, been relearning my way around some of the buildings!” Tyson joked, his English accent as strong as ever. Despite not being Scottish, Tyson had picked up some of the dialect from a few of his extended family back home in the United Kingdom where his Aunt and Uncle had been living in Edinburgh for ten years now. He didn’t particularly find this odd as he liked how expressive some of these new words could be.
Tyson relaxed more as Joshua settled into the conversation, he feared that he would have had to make his excuses and leave if the tone of the conversation dropped slightly. But right now, he was glad to talk to a friendly face after such a stressful day. ”Glad to hear it.” He said with a smile, picking up on a faint smile from Joshua, something he rarely saw from him. Tyson hadn’t gotten all his assignments yet; most of them would be given to him tomorrow as that’s when he had the most varied timetable of the week. ”Yeah, helps you get back into the swing of things, eh?” Tyson said with a slightly neutral expression on his face as he pondered calling his Boss.
But then Joshua seemed to handle his other thoughts of what to do with the rest of his day, at least until work called. Coffee with a friend seemed much more tempting than with an inanimate object and a wall for company. ”No plans yet.” He said succinctly, softly smiling at Joshua’s offer. ”Sounds good.” He swapped his bag over from his right shoulder to his left as the textbooks inside had started digging in quite uncomfortably. ”Same here, lesson was cancelled so ended up working too.” The common ground of both having slaved away for at least the past hour gave Tai hope that the pair would appreciate a sit down. ”Got anything in mind?” He asked his friend, pondering if the younger student wanted merely some company on his way home or to simply take a seat on a bench. =- =- =- =- =- =- =- =- =- =- = Outfit: HERE Notes: none

There was a slight sparkle of amusement in Joshua's eyes when Tyson spoke, but he offered no verbal appreciation and he didn't laugh. It wasn't that he didn't find the joke something that he could appreciate--no, this was just Josh's general behaviour. Friends of his, and thus probably Tai by this point, generally adapted to his stoic mannerisms and overall seriousness. When he got so close to you that he felt comfortable expressing himself it was often a shock to some that he had a real sense of humour at all. Nell had often times looked like she was unaware of whether he was really joking at all. He didn't do this sort of thing on purpose to baffle and confuse, it was just in his nature to be a bit closed off. He was similar to the Thunder students in several ways, but a nasty temper and strong genetics had insisted that Fire was his real calling. "It does," he agreed with a small nod, agreeing to Tyson's comment on the work. He wasn't someone that could take a long break from doing things. Sitting around a house all day and watching TV wasn't an acceptable past-time for someone like Josh. He at least had to read for part of the day to feel like he wasn't slacking. Josh was a strange guy. He'd found something he was good at and the way he made his habits sometimes suggested he was afraid of losing it.
It seemed they'd both been freed from their periods but had shirked this freedom for the sake of further work. That wasn't to say that Josh always went out of his way to be responsible--he was sure that if Nell or one of his (very few) friends had texted him during his time at the library he might have been persuaded to part from his studies. "They've got some nerve calling them free periods," he said, though he didn't sound irked. Perhaps he was joking? It really was hard to tell with Joshua, but at very least he was not scowling or speaking in bitter tones. "They give us enough work during the year that we spend all of our free time working anyway." Such was school, he supposed. He could understand why it wasn't the favourite thing of many people. Just because he saw things differently didn't mean he was oblivious to other opinions. "How'd you fare with it?" He was questioning whether or not his friend had actually gotten anything done when it came to what he'd intended to do. Sometimes boredom or headaches or even something like fatigue got in the way.
Josh shook his head. "Not really. Got anything you want to do?" He was in the sort of mood where he'd be up for a number of things--including a coffee shop, if Tai mentioned it. He didn't really have a fondness for coffee but most places had other options that he did enjoy, such as tea. He could drink coffee if he really needed to. Sometimes it was the only thing they had in the house when he was staying up late and trying to study, so it was certainly a tolerable substance when in need. "No one's expecting me, so." This was a half-truth. His parents did prefer if he informed them of his outings, but given that Josh was nineteen he only humoured them half the time now. Even though he was still living under their roof he could certainly think for himself and didn't have any sort of a curfew. It annoyed Donovan, but thankfully Patricia managed to keep things calm between the boys for the most part. She really was the mediator. "Are you working tonight?" He knew his friend had a job at Blackjack simply because he'd bumped into him there before. Josh's family was very rich, he could afford a step up in price for the comforts that were available in the upscale bar.
