Ashton really tried to see the best in people. Even in those that insulted him, backstabbed him, or generally gave him a hard time--there was always a second and sometimes even a third chance when you were dealing with Ashton Raleigh. He wasn't judgemental, either. You didn't have to be a guy for him to like you, didn't have to be Earth or Water for him to consider hanging around you. In fact, one of the fastest friendships (did he consider it a relationship now, or was that too weird?) he'd ever experienced had been with the Fire bitch, Asha Woods. Unfortunately for Ashton, this last little detail was causing him quite a lot of problems.
"Stay away from our kind, Raleigh," the Fire graduate said roughly, shoving him. Ashton instinctively tensed and prepared to defend himself (he wasn't a total pushover) but immediately backed down a little when the older male started to heat the air and then conjured a wave of fire nearby, a none-too-subtle threat. "Didn't think so," he sneered when Ashton hesitated. He seemed to be revelling in the power that he had over the Earth leader, enjoying the fact that he could probably take him down pretty quickly if he tried. "Just lay off, would you?" Ashton sounded exasperated, tired. "Why does it matter who I hang out with?" The graduate only laughed. "It's a bit pathetic that I understand politics more than a leader, isn't it?" He was asking the question to no one in particular, seeing as he and Ashton were the only ones in the hall. He'd broken away from the pack mentality, but that was alright considering it was just an Earth student he was up against. "Let me remind you why you flower children can't hang around us."
The fire was hot and merciless, and the blast hit the side of his neck with some force. Ashton yelped in surprise and pain, clutching the burn with a hiss of agony. The Fire male chuckled under his breath and walked away, clearly not concerned about the possibility of Ashton pursuing him. Which he didn't. Ashton was the leader and thus was expected to stand up for himself a little more, but he didn't have a death sentence. He knew that he couldn't take on a graduate even if they were from Water or Thunder, so he just clutched his neck and blinked to try and focus on something other than the pain. "Shit," he muttered, realising that he was probably going to need to get this treated. "Might as well get it over with," he sighed to himself, heading to the Medical Wing.
The waiting room just inside the door was a lot less packed than it had been during the war, and this was a serious relief. However, there were still others with their fair share of maladies and injuries, so instead of insisting on some sort of favouritism and going first, he sat down with a hand on his injured neck and just hoped that things moved quickly this morning. Though the burn was quite painful, Ashton was stubborn in the mindset that he couldn't let any of the others in the Wing see him at his worst. He didn't want to appear as some sort of weak little nancy, the typical stereotype that most assholes thought of when they considered Earth students. He might not have been too strong or aggressive, but he wasn't weak.
"Ms. Summers?"
It was really like a sort of a doctors office in the way that the receptionist glanced up to address a girl from an element not his own. She looked like she was either sick or suffering from some sort of allergy, and she vanished into one of the several back rooms. Ashton sighed. Maybe this will take longer than I thought.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - Jarred laid stretched out on the bed situated on the left side of his dorm room, sharp green eyes stared blankly up to the ceiling above him. He was dreading today. His right hand loosely gripped the plain black t-shirt he had intended to put on, while his left rested on the scar on his left side. He hated to even touch it. He sighed deeply and his head turned to the right to glance at the little digital clock that sat on his night stand. Almost time for his appointment. With a groan he sat up and began fumbling with his shirt for a moment before pulling it over his head. Where did my shoes go.. He glanced around and noticed his well worn old work boots laying in a heap beside his dresser. With both hands on the edge of the bed he reached over with his left leg and kicked his shoes back within arms reach, slowly he put them on. After another reluctant sigh he stood up and in just a few steps crossed the room to the door. One hand turned the nob while the other grabbed his old cowboy hat and he slowly strode out into the hall. Down the hall and out into the common room his eyes never left the ground. He reached out to pull open the big doors that led out toward the main campus only to have them burst in on him. He stepped back looking surprised as a few fire students came in joking something about how much of a pansy the earth leader was. He shook his head a little which caught the attention of the student doing most of the talking "Got a problem pig boy?" Jarred just rolled his eyes and paid little mind to the comment, he was used to being greeted with negativity because he wasn't all, anti any other element like the rest of the fire students seemed to be. The kid walked closer to Jarred and sneered "Want me to scar you up like I did that little shit?" He was in Jarred's face now, a little too close for comfort as he raised a hand near Jarred's neck. He grabbed his fellow fire student's hand and simply squeezed, rollin the tendons in his hand over the bone. His older brother had done this to him once, though when he'd done it it was just in play and his brother hadn't been near as harsh, never mind the fact that it still hurt. But Jarred wasn't playing. "Ain't it a little too early to be threatenin' people?" His voice rolled out deep and dripping with that southern accent, though it was calm while the kid was squirming to get away. He sighed and let the kid go, then turned his back and walked out the door. "Ill teach you to attack your upperclassmen you little brat!!" The student yelled as Jarred shut the door in his face, he expected he'd be having some problems out of that one in the near future..
He walked slow down the halls toward the medical wing, he didn't feel like rushing to an appointment he didn't want to keep in the first place. He was only doing this to keep a promise to his mom and dad. The heels of the old boots on his feet scuffed along the floor with his lazy stride as he rounded the corner, he spotted someone walking in the same direction with a hand over their neck. His curiosity nagged at him to get closer and see if that was indeed the person that the other fire students had been talking about, but then again if it was then he knew that person would be going to the medical wing and he was defiantly in no rush to get there. So he slowed back down and let the person get out of sight, his suspicion would be confirmed soon enough anyway. Too soon actually for as he rounded another corner there it was.. His eyes turned up to the big back lit sign over the double doors "Medical Wing" He sighed and his shoulders slumped down as he walked in. Up to the front desk, he said good morning to the receptionist and put his name down on the sign in sheet. He glanced across the room for somewhere to sit, somewhere out of the way where he could atleast cat nap before he got called back, seemed like the wait would be kinda long today even though he had an appointment, judging by the girl who walked into the exam office that couldn't stop sneezing. Green eyes scanned the room again, this time he was looking for the kid he'd seen in the hall. Sure enough there he was across the room form Jarred and he could just barely see what looked like a burn from around where his hand was covering it. He tipped the brim of his hat down and shook his head, he never did understand how grown people could be so childish..

He'd heard a couple of rumours about one certain Fire graduate that walked through the doors of the Medical Wing, and one of them was that he was southern. Certainly looked it, though Ashton, what with his cowboy hat and his attire. But the Earth leader averted his gaze, instead studying a piece of abstract artwork that hung in the waiting area. Why is that even here? It was probably to brighten the atmosphere of the room, but it wasn't like the art was particularly uplifting. Ash wasn't an artist, though. Maybe it was an artistic thing, where you had to be a visionary to see it? He didn't even care--truth be told, he was just trying to avoid conflict by not staring at the Fire elemental who had just entered the room. He wasn't an utter coward or anything of the sort, but he knew that the Fire kids could be rather cruel and irrational in their reasons for attacking someone. They'd assaulted him simply because he'd been seen hanging out with Asha, after all. 'Their kind', they'd said, but he'd known immediately what they meant. Why did it have to be so difficult to hold down a friendship in this place? It wasn't like Asha was their leader or anything.
But you're a leader, he reminded himself with a bitter sort of sigh. Politics was a real pain in the backside once you got to thinking about it. He wasn't allowed to have friends that fell outside of the 'code', he wasn't allowed to disagree with his own element and their decisions to outcast someone because of their beliefs. He didn't believe that the Earth students would so blatantly kick him out like they'd done with that boy in Fire, but he was a bit afraid for his position at the moment. There had been a lot of change in the hierarchy after the war. His stand-in position had been solidified, and they'd lost the female Earth leader and even the male Fire. People were being replaced left and right, and Ashton really just didn't know how to deal with it all. Except for to survive, really. Tough it out.
Slowly, the Earth leader lowered his hand from the side of his neck, wincing as he did so. It hurt like a bitch, but at least he knew that this would be working to heal it. That made him come to a strange revelation--what was wrong with the Fire male that had just come into the Wing? A deft glance toward him was made just in time to see the guy sigh and tip his hat down. Other than looking sort of glum, however, the graduate appeared to be pretty healthy. Partially out of curiosity and also because he wasn't a complete and total coward, Ashton decided to ask him about it. "Hey, are you sick? You don't look injured." It wasn't rude or even accusatory. In fact, coming from the lips of the friendly Earth leader it could even have been considered polite. It was clear that he was asking from a place of general curiosity and concern, rather than just trying to be an asshole and passing off the problems of someone else as trivial in comparison to the bad burn that was now very red and visible against his neck.
Except for the fact that they didn't know one another other than by possible reputation, and so this situation could turn awkward pretty fast if Ashton didn't introduce himself. He was being potentially stupid by talking to a Fire graduate much like the one that had just burned him, but he'd already made a slip up and so what was a couple more? "Uh, I'm Ashton by the way," he introduced himself. He was even ballsy enough to stick out a hand and arch a brow, as if wondering what the graduate would do about it. "Ashton Raleigh. The Earth leader." It still felt weird to refer to himself as the Earth leader. He was used to being 'that kid that's standing in for Rich'. But he wasn't standing in for Rich any more. Richard had never come back from his unfortunate accident, and after the war his element had asked him if he'd like to make it official. He'd said yes, and that was that.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - Jarred had lost track of time sitting in the medical wing, things were moving slower the usual here and it seemed like the little girl with the allergy problem would never come out so he could just go in and get his appointment over with. As a matter of fact the bored freshman had nearly fallen asleep under the shade of the brim of his hat, and he would have if it hadn't been for a voice. He opened one eye and looked in the general direction of the sound, then pushed his hat up just a little so he could actually see who'd made it. It was the earth male sitting across from him, the one he'd seen in the hall. And judging by the wound he could clearly see was a burn, it had been the 'kid' the other fire students had been bragging about. He had found the tone in his voice kind of nice as it had been his experience recently, that most people only cared for themselves. Though he couldn't at all understand why the kid would even want to be nice to another fire elemental after what the last one had given him. He looked up and stretched a bit. "Nah I'm just here for my check up." He replied with a slight smile and that thick drawl of his. He noticed after mentioning why he was here that he'd been holding his side this whole time, he quickly dropped his hand and with his other reached out to shake Ashton's hand, "Nice to meet ya, Im Jarred." When his hand left Ashton's it reached up for his hat to remove it, run his hand over his buzzed hair a few times, then replace it. He glanced again at the burn and his own curiosity got the better of him. "Was it them fire boys that gave you that?" He asked carefully, glancing at the burn, last thing he wanted to do was upset him. Though secretly he'd kinda hoped it was so he wouldn't feel so bad about nearly breaking one of the asshole's hands..
Just then he heard something fall from behind the exam room door followed by a never ending string of sneezes and the sound of a girl crying. Oh this was going to be a long day, or at least a long wait.. He looked back to Ashton and thought about what exactly it would be that the doctor would do for that burn. He didn't know if the medics here had some sort of amazing healing ability, but from his time growing up on the farm and his native american roots he also knew a thing or two about dressing a wound. Maybe he could help Ashton out and get out of his annoying check up at the same time? He smiled, just a little "Do ya know what they're gonna do for you in there or are ya just tryin' to get that looked at?" He asked, thinking Ashton might know more about the healing capabilities here then he did as he only came here every few months. - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Ashton went from being confused to being outright baffled when the Fire graduate mentioned a check-up. Ashton wasn’t in the habit of coming here to get himself checked out when he wasn’t actually sick, and in his life that had always been the definition of a routine check-up. Rather than trying to fix something that was wrong, you were trying to figure out if there was something wrong in the first place. Call him oblivious, but Ash hadn’t even noticed that Jarred had been clutching his side the entire time. The Earth elemental was very kind and didn’t tend to judge, nor did he make a habit of observing others. Subtle things like hand gestures and wincing weren’t things that he would always pick up on. Sometimes, perhaps, if he was studying you, but Jarred made him a little nervous. He never really knew how to deal with Fire elementals until he’d deduced their personality. Some of them, though, some of them were alright. Josh came to mind, that guy that had risked his entire Alliance coming after him to side with a friend. So Ashton was always willing to give someone the benefit of the doubt. “Are you worried about getting sick?” he wondered innocently. He truly didn’t realise that the check-up was for something else. “I know a lot of people get paranoid in the winter, but it’s almost summer now.” Then again, there were always the hypochondriacs to worry about.
Surprising him by not only being cordial but actually being friendly, it took a moment for Ashton to respond to the introduction. Ducking his head and giving an embarrassed little grin, Ash replied, “Nice to meet you, too Jarred.” The accent and the very southern style of dress didn’t bother the Earth elemental at all. He hardly ever cared about things like that in people. He was blind to things like race and class and other sorts of stereotypes because Ashton was an all-around accepting guy. It wasn’t that he couldn’t see that you were white or that you were wearing a cowboy hat, he just chose not to let it affect his opinion. Perhaps that was why he’d been an Earth elemental and not been stuck with something like Wind or maybe even Water. Water elementals were nice, but he’d always found his own kind to be a lot more considerate and compassionate. “I’ll admit that I’m surprised to find you’re so friendly. It’s not often I’ve met friendly Fire elementals.” He wasn’t shy in admitting this, but he added a smile to assure the graduate that he meant no offence by the words. He was just chattering aimlessly and being the friendly guy that he was.
Ashton frowned softly as the burn was brought back into the conversation. He would have glanced at it had it been possible, but of course it was on the side of his neck and he’d have looked quite stupid trying to crane it and get a good look. “Yeah,” he said, seeing no point in lying. He didn’t know that Jarred had heard about what had went on and had even followed after his fellow graduates, and he probably wouldn’t have known how to react to the situation even if he did. It wasn’t often that Fire kids went against their own. “It stings like nothing else, but it’s not so bad.” Ashton waved a dismissive hand, trying to be the brave one in the situation. He figured it was Asha’s influence that made him like this sometimes. He didn’t want to be called effeminate or anything, he didn’t want his masculinity challenged again. She might have been joking around with him, but seeing as he liked her and valued her opinion, it had affected him.
He was caught off guard by the question about the Medical Wing, mostly because it sounded as if Jarred really had no idea about how the place worked. “I won’t just get it looked at, I’ll have it healed when I’m there,” he replied. It seemed like the most obvious thing in the world to him, but that was just because Ashton was used to being burned and having to come get treated at the Wing. It didn’t occur to him immediately that Jarred might not be a frequenter of this place. In fact, it took several seconds before he actually slapped a hand against his leg lightly. “Oh, I’m sorry. Didn’t you know? They can heal elemental injuries.” He wondered if this guy had ever gotten a burn and just let it sit. That would have really sucked. “I figured it was better to get the burn treated than to just walk around with it stinging for weeks.”

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - Jarred just blinked a couple times then chuckled a little, he'd only just met Ashton but he could already tell he liked his spirit. He seemed so naive about things and at the same time caring enough to look past what he didn't know. Jarred liked that quality in people, yet hardly anyone possessed it. "No, I'm not worried about getting sick.." His voice trailed while he tried to think of how he could explain his presence here while not having to go into so much detail about the reason. "I uh.. Ive got an old injury that I have to get checked sometimes" He finally replied with a weak sort of smile. Then he thought about it and realized that that was the most he'd told anyone about his scar in a very long time, then again nearly no one had any knowledge of it here, save some of the teachers and of course the people in the medical wing. He liked it that way.
He shook his head a little to bring himself back to reality and out of memory lane when he heard Ashton speak again, something about nice fire elementals.. Such a thing existed? Well besides himself of course, but Jarred was the exception to the rule, or atleast that was what he'd been led to believe judging by the other fire student's attitudes. Even when unprovoked they acted like they had a constant chip on their shoulder. "You haven't given me any reason to be mean to ya." He replied frankly, and with another little chuckle. "I don't see why I should go around hatin people, 'specally people who are nice to me first" He glanced back up at the burn, such a nasty parting gift to give someone who did nothing to provoke you. He suddenly had the urge to go back to the fire dorms and give the kid a matching wound, but it wasn't his fight so he shouldn't really get involved. Even so he still couldn't wrap his brain around where some people in this school got off thinking they could just treat people like the dirt they walk on. Though really, around here the dirt you walk on could spring to life and trap you if you aren't careful who you mess with.
Jarred's expression went from slightly bemused to down right surprise when Ashton mentioned that they could just heal burns. No muss, no fuss, just make them go away. It was the craziest thing he'd ever heard, and nothing he'd ever experienced as for the most part the only thing he came here for was the check ups. Any illness or wound he suffered he usually took care of himself using old medicine traditions kept in his family. He had no clue they could preform such medical medicals, even here. "Oh wow! That's pretty cool" His eyes still somewhat wide with almost childish surprise he laughed a little, he couldn't imagine how silly Ashton might have thought he was at the moment, he talked about the healer's abilities like they were just common place and anyone could do it. Though after just hearing that someone could do something like that he wouldn't be surprised. "I usually just pack mint and honey on my burns.." He replied with a weak sort of smile. Which, in learning the trade of a fire elemental he'd contracted his share of nasty burns. - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Ashton seemed surprised when Jarred revealed that he had an old injury, and then he reverted into a sheepish sort of smile as he realised that he'd been putting his nose where it didn't belong. "Oh," he said, nodding. "Sorry for prying so much," Ashton apologised, knowing that it was his place to make sure Jarred knew he didn't mean anything by it. Ashton was just a very kind and genuine soul, and he hated the idea of someone thinking him to be a nosy little brat. "I just figured it had something to do with paranoia after the war, you know? Everyone's so concerned about injuries and sicknesses and stuff." The war really had been some kind of hell, and as the Earth leader Ashton had taken a lot of that onto his own shoulders. Not that he was complaining about any of this, though. Raleigh was a good guy that tried to do right by his element and give them the best leadership possible.
The Earth elemental smiled as the older boy spoke. "I like the way you think, Jarred," Ashton concluded. Why couldn't all of the Fire elementals be a little more like this? Ash wasn't naive enough to expect peace love and harmony for the rest of his life, but it would be nice if they could just stay out of the way of the Earth elementals. Ashton didn't like the neighbours dog because it always made a point to shit on their lawn rather than its own, but that didn't mean he went and kicked it. Perhaps this was a bad analogy because Ashton would never consider kicking something as adorable as a dog, but the point was still the same--if you didn't like something, let it alone. "Well then I'll give you the same benefit of the doubt," he decided with a smile. "You've been pretty nice to me so far, so I won't judge you based on your element." It was a pretty nice thing to do, and in Ashton's opinion it was the right thing to do. He was the Earth leader, so here's to being responsible and not starting unnecessary battles.
"Mint and honey?" he repeated, having never heard of doing that for a burn. Ashton's parents used to tell him to treat any sort of burns with aloe when he would catch his hand against something hot like the stove as a kid. They didn't have the convenience of a Fire elemental in their household that could magic away a burn with a flick of their wrist. "Does it work pretty well?" He was genuinely interested in what Jarred had to say, and it was pretty clear that he wasn't just yammering on for the sake of a conversation. Ashton was just that--genuine. It was no wonder that he made a lot of friends and got along with a wide circle of people, because Ashton really couldn't see the bad in someone unless it slapped him in the face. He wanted to believe about good things, not evil. "I used to use aloe, but the Wing is pretty convenient. It stings and looks a bit like sunburn for a while, but it helps prevent scarring." The mark from when he'd been attacked in the dungeons had now faded completely.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - Jarred just chuckled a bit and made the sort of jesture with his left hand saying that Ashton had nothing to worry about with what he'd called prying. In fact, if that was his way of prying, that was the nicest interogation he'd ever gone through about the nature of his injury. "Naw don't worry 'bout it." He finished off the reassurance with that simple sentence. His right hand moved up to remove his hat and set it on his knee while he nodded slowly as his classmate mentioned war. To be honest he was tired of hearing about it, but he could also understand how scarring it might be for the people involved. "Yeah I could see that." He agreed with sort of a somber tone. "I kinda tried to keep my nose outta all that though." He admitted with a short nod that followed with that sort of silence you give a subject that effected the lives of many.
It was Ashton who broke it though, and in a way that made Jarred smile. Liked the way he thought huh? Well that was defiantly a first. Most of the students in his element despised the way he thought and some of them even went so far as to make it known that they didn't think he even deserved to be a fire elemental, let alone be rewarded for his ways of thinking or given the benefit of the doubt. "Well I thank ya' very much." He bowed his head down slightly, that sort of physical 'thank you' gesture. "I'll do my best not to disapoint." He had to admit he was a tad bit amazed at how diplomatic this earth elemental was being considering not even a couple hours ago he'd been attacked by one of his very own classmates. That's the power of an open mind I guess. He mused to himself, slightly lost in his own thoughts before Ashton's voice bought him back to reality again.
Speaking of herbal remidies, now this was something he knew about. "Oh yeah, works real good." He replied with definate confidence. Mint and honey was something simple his family has been using sence he could remember and for generations far before he was even thought of. "When we'd bring the herd up for spring before turnin them out in summer pastures we'd have to brand them and it never failed someone would get burned by either the iron or the fires they were put in to heat 'em up." He chuckled remembering what a fiasco those days were. Angry claves everywhere and cussing farm hands everywhere else. "The honey heals and the mint cools it off. Ive used it loads of times and the only scar I really have didn't come from a fire."
Ugh.. crappy post ._. I sorry Dx I've been sick and so has my Jarred muse QQ

Ashton's mind had been blown this year by the amount of decent Fire elementals that just seemed to be coming out of the woodwork. Alright, so perhaps Asha had been really mean to him at first and so had Joshua Dale, but the pair of them had shown that they had good sides as well. Asha was sort of a love interest he supposed seeing as they hadn't confirmed aloud that they were dating, and Josh had went against his entire element for a friend in another. Jarred hadn't even started off rocky, instead just being a nice guy right from the get-go. He was always surprised by things like that, but it also cheered him up. "I try not to get involved, but I kind of got forced into it this year." He chuckled a bit sheepishly and messed up his brown hair. Yeah, 'forced' was a pretty good word for it. If you were an elemental leader they all expected you to suddenly hate who the element hated and love who they loved. At least Earth kids weren't quite so vicious about this as Fire, but it still made him uncomfortable.
"Don't your element give you a hard time about it?" Ashton asked as he suddenly realised that Jarred was a part of the very element which usually took betrayal and lack of involvement very seriously. It irritated him to think that the Fire kids thought that they could dictate everyone's lives simply because they were in the same faction. "I think it's kind of childish," he frowned, not realising the irony of thinking something was childish when he was in the presence of someone older than he was. "It's not like you're doing any harm by not attacking me, or any of the other Earth kids for that matter." It did good in his opinion. It meant that he escaped without injuries and that Jarred wouldn't be getting in trouble with the school for violence. What was wrong with that? Nothing, at least in his books.
Ashton listened with genuine interest as Jarred told him something about branding, a thing he was quite ignorant of, and the fact that it often caused burns. "Ouch," he mused, smiling a bit. "That can't be too pleasant." Jarred then told him about the natural remedy and how it left one without scars, something that seemed quite impressive for something made out of nature. Then again, the burns at the Academy were made with pure fire and likely turned out a little worse. Still, it was nice to keep that in mind in case he burned himself on the stove at home or something. "That's really neat," he mused. "I've never really thought to do anything like that before."
