"Excuse me?..." she asked, glancing up with a smile. It was now a trademark of hers. Well, at least for the last few days. She was constantly happy. When she woke up, she was smiling. When she sat throughout boring history classes, she was smiling. Well, they weren't that boring. Just that she caught every tenth word. Obviously, drawing doodles at the corners of her notebook pages was more fun. And don't forget the muffled giggles she got now and then. Yeah, she landed in detention two days in a row. Why? Because she answered with sighs or philosophic sentences to 'yes or no' questions. After that, she figured her teacher just gave up hope.
The weird part of this was, she didn't mind that much. The girl still wondered the forest. She still snuck out of her dorms for reckless reasons. The one thing that was different was her beginning to hum, or even sing... stuff now and then. And then there was that one evening she skipped a little. Well, something was wrong, alright. She did try to shake the feeling. At times it even went away... and then it hit her after a couple of hours. It was as if there was no escape, really.
What was she doing now? Well, heading through the park and attempting to somehow get back to her school. Was it late? Yes.. yes, indeed. The sun had already set and the lanterns had been set off. So, it qualified as late. Why was she even away from school? Well, she had burned her notebook. It was math, I think. You see, it looked pretty while hovering in the air and flaming up like that... yeah, she should get back to normal... but really, why did it take so long to get a notebook? Well, she had spent most of the day daydreaming and drawing figures with her finger while looking at the ceiling. Yeah, her roommate kicked her out to go get that notebook so she could copy her notes and get ready for that annoying test that was coming up after a few days. So, there she was... heading back Also, she noticed that recently she preferred dresses more than jeans. For example, that very day, she was out in a short, white, comfy summer dress. The girl had jumped in the lake multiple times a while back. She could take a light evening breeze on bare skin, thank you very much.
But the answer was referred to one of the guys in front of her. They seemed to in mid twenties... or perhaps it was just her. She didn't really take her time glancing over the guys... After all, she recently only cared about one guy in particular. And she was feeling awfully polite these last days too. That was probably the reason she hadn't flicked them off yet. But it was really annoying. They had asked her to go with them to some party or something? Well, after about a dozen times of a polite 'no', they didn't give up. She just figured she'd pass by. But no, nothing was easy, obviously. One of those guys grabbed her hand and that is when she replied with the earlier mentioned phrase.
"No, really, I'm going home." she gave out, now finding this actually annoying.
'Nonsense. You're coming with us.' the guy replied with a laugh while pulling her at him rather forcefully. She could feel the scent of alcohol when hitting his chest face first. Oh, god, he was actually sliding a hand down her back. Ew!
The girl shrieked at the squeeze and pushed away. Of course, now her hair was messed up now and she was rather pissed. "Just leave me alone, already!" she barked, spinning on her heel to go the other direction. What the? One of them was actually standing in her way. Seriously? Oh, god, why was this happening when she had heels and a dress? Shorts and sneakers would have been so much better. Besides, what was it with jerks traveling in packs? Well, she wasn't traumatized or anything, just annoyed. The girl had encountered comments and rare grope attempts. They were disgusting and annoying if anything else.
*Why today?... Awh, and this was my happy time... mean.*

Joshua didn't mean to be defiant. He really didn't start the day off intending to break the rules that his parents put in place for his grounding, honestly. But as the day wore on and he became more and more tired of lazing around and doing nothing, the call of the outside air only grew more tempting. He went up to one of his windows and put his hand against the glass for a moment, feeling the warmth from the sun outside that had soaked into it through the day. It would surely be much better to hang around outside than just sit in here reading all the time, wouldn't it? Joshua adored reading, and when even he was on his last nerve about it... well, then you knew that things were bad. As long as he didn't get caught, it would be fine, right? But how was he going to get out...? It reminded him of his childhood as he sat down on the end of his bed, dark hair slightly messy from laying in bed all day. He used to sit and hatch elaborate plans for how he would break out of his house arrest and go to meet his fri--to meet the gang downtown somewhere. He couldn't think of those men as friends.
The answer came to him so quickly that it was almost brilliant. When the butler entered his room at the usual time to do a quick tidying up of anything that needed fixing, Joshua saw his chance. The man disappeared into the closet and Josh called, "I'll be in the bathroom, no need to clear up in there." He shut the bathroom door loud enough to be heard, and then simply slipped out of the now-unlocked room door and into a shadowy hallway. His heart immediately jumped to his throat, wary of each and every shadow and movement in the rooms. He was paranoid that his parents or sister would be lurking around every corner, despite the fact that he knew his father was at work and his mother was probably in her office on the second floor. Annabel might just be asleep, considering the fact that it was dark and that if he was going to be sneaking out, doing so at night was probably foolish. It would be too easy to run into trouble at night, but Josh wasn't thinking about that. Instead, all he could concentrate on was his boredom and the fact that he wanted a few hours of freedom.
By some stroke of luck, he managed to get down to the first floor without so much as hearing his family, let alone running into any of them. It seemed oddly suspicious until he passed the door leading into the garden and realised that Belle and his mother were chatting, their backs to him as they gushed on about flowers and garden plans together. He lamented the conversations he used to have with his little sister for a moment, then turned away guiltily and slipped out of the front door. "Sorry, Belle...' The words were whispered softly under his breath. She'd probably take a long time in forgiving him for the wrongs he'd done in being arrested and lying to her about so much in his life. He'd tried to preserve her perfect innocence, but in doing so he'd only hurt her more. I only hope she can forgive me.
Josh tried to push his sister from his mind, cheer himself up as he got beyond the gates of the mansion--or rather climbed over the gates of it. He was a little rustier at fence-hopping than he had been in youth, but at least he avoided getting stuck or breaking an ankle on the landing. He didn't know where was was going, so he ended up simply walking in a random direction. It did not help when he came upon the park, remembering the last time he had been here with his little sister and the fact that everything had been fine back then. She hadn't known. Stop thinking about Annabel! It seemed the fates also wanted him to drop any thoughts of his sister, for at that moment his gray eyes fell upon a scene unfolding before him. A girl was being antagonised by a couple of older men, something that made Joshua feel mildly distressed and uncomfortable for a moment. There were about four men and only one woman, and the fact that they were stumbling slightly suggested drunkenness. A selfish part of him didn't want to get involved--Josh didn't play the hero, that wasn't his role in life.
At the same time, the girl was in trouble. Clearly in trouble, and if he didn't step in... what did that make him? An asshole, that's what, he thought bitterly. It would be stupid to think that he could take on four guys alone, even if they were drunk. But he had his knife, and it was with that simple weapon that he did one of the stupidest things he'd ever attempted. Striding up to the scene without so much as a 'hello' to whatever damsel in distress he was aiding, Joshua clocked the nearest one in the side of the head. "Hey, asshole, look at me!" he called out. "The fuck do you think you're doing?" Of course, that got the attention of the others. Pulling the knife, Joshua held it up to keep them at bay. "Don't think I won't use it, because I will fucking shank you if you--Freya!" His gray eyes registered shock as he realised that he knew the girl they'd been harrassing. Shaking his head--now is not the time for pleasantries, Joshua--he said, "We should run. Now. We can't take all four of them, drunk or not." But he wanted to make sure she was ready before he took off or anything. Josh took a wary step back as one of his possible opponents advanced. "The hell did I walk into? Did they do anything?"

Disgusting. That feeling was nothing more than disgusting. That male actually groped a part of her. And while there were cases when this was allowed, it was as far from this situation as she was far from actually agreeing to go with them. That means, it was a little further than it was from the second closest star... and I mean, star. Hey, one space ship made it there in fifteen years. She wondered how well the guy would do if casted out of space. Feeling her heartbeat rising and herself getting more annoyed by the second, she was actually contemplating about flaring up that cigarette one of them had. Hey, they were drunk. What was the chance anyone would believe them? Besides, she'd have flames to work with right? It'd only be fair seeing as she was probably going to sit in the shower for a good three hours that night.
Just as she was on the edge of incinerating one of them for the scare, her attention was distracted by a familiar figure, followed by a familiar voice. She took a moment to recoil from that entrance. Josh? Seriously? This was a surprise. Did some beacon go off every time she was in trouble? He popped up at the forest and now he barges in when she gets molested. Well, look at that. And she thought she had a hero complex. and wasn't it him who commented on her being reckless and stupid? Well, no, that wasn't reckless at all, Josh. Yet, she couldn't help but feel an ample amount of gratitude toward the guy. She was actually... happy. As weird as that was, she was already used to being happy. Nothing new there.
Oh look, he recognized her. She didn't think it was the best time to start chatting and talking lunch dates, either, but she did hesitate to glance back at the jerks surrounding her. It was just the shock. What was he doing there, anyway? She was starting to think he had the need to play hero at times... or he just wasn't an complete jackass... one of the both. Hey, she didn't know the guy too well. She could assume both, really. And this whole 'Seth thing' only made thinks worse because she lost focus and actually started thinking about how funny 'I will fucking shank you!' sounded. I mean, really.. the word 'shank' was amus-Anyway, see what I mean? Focus lost at a snap of fingers.
He was right, thou. The two should have gotten away from there as soon as they could. Really, she had the same plan. What she didn't like was running in heels this high. Reaching down to pull off her shoes as quickly as possible, she couldn't help but be glad he gained their attention for a bit. Well almost. While bending down she could feel something on her butt. Oh, god, seriously? And she though her mind was in the gutter. "For the love of god, man, just get yourself a blow up doll!" she snapped back, before beginning to run, tugging on Joshua's arm just barely, as if to make sure the guy actually began to move. Oh, they were lucky she had butterflies in her stomach that week. Had it been her in a lightly sad mood beforehand, she might have disregarded the whole 'don't burn people outside of school' thing. Hey, she'd have a reason, right?
(holy crap, that's short... I'm so sorreehh T^T)

Joshua had never really had a hero complex before. He actually was the type of guy that would rather pretend he'd seen nothing and move on than to get involved, but even his questionable conscience didn't like the idea of rape. He didn't think he could just walk on past this situation and sit at home later wondering if they had used her up and left her dead in an alleyway, which would have been the most likely outcome in this sort of situation. He wasn't foolish, at least. Joshua didn't have some idea that he could just bust in, kick ass, and leave. He wasn't trained in any sort of fighting style and even if he was, there were four of them. If he'd been allowed to use his powers it would have been a snap to just wave his hand and incinerate the guys, or at least threaten to, and then walk off all nice and calmly with Freya. However, that wasn't allowed. The last time he'd accidentally lost control and snapped on someone, the government were about to get involved. Thank goodness for his mothers connections in the political world that could erase evidence and call off the search for the elemental in question--her own son. None of Mum's coworkers knew that their own Patricia Dale, Member of Parliament, was an elemental herself, else she'd probably have been their next victim.
Freya tugged on his arm and his next instinct was to bolt, though he did try to remember that she probably ran a little less quickly than him thanks to the fact that his legs were a lot longer. He would have liked to have turned around and decked the one that had grabbed her ass in the face, but he wasn't stupid enough for that. As mentioned earlier, Joshua didn't have a god complex or a hero complex. He usually didn't get involved in this kind of a thing, so he wasn't brave enough to go all kung-fu on their asses and try to impress the 'damsel in distress' in this situation. He led the way into the forest seeing as it would be the best place to hide from a bunch of drunken idiots that would probably lose most of their interest as soon as they lost sight of the girl they were pursuing. Panting from the exertion and bracing one hand against the trunk of a nearby tree to try and catch his breath, Joshua gave her a strained sort of smile. "Well, that was eventful," he said with dry humour. He really didn't find this whole situation funny at all, but he was trying to make light of it at least.
Once his heart rate started to slow down a bit and he could breathe without it sounding haggard and stressed, Joshua wiped his brow with the back of his hand. Gray eyes seemed concerned as he glanced toward the way they'd came, but there was no sign of them nor any sound of footsteps through the trees. Good. It was kind of dark underneath the canopy of the trees and might have been creepy to anyone who didn't like the dark, but it barely seemed to have an effect on Joshua. He'd been raised to understand that scary movies were fake and that you were a whimp if you thought there were monsters under your bed or skeletons in your closet. "What happened back there?" he asked her. "Before I showed up, I mean. Did you know those guys?" He wasn't accusing her of being a slut--oh, no, nothing like that. He just wondered if she'd been hanging around them before they got totally drunk off their asses and started to hit on her and go for her.
A sardonic laugh brushed past Joshua's lips. "I wish I could have broke a few bones, but I don't really want to end up in jail." He tossed the knife up and caught it as if to indicate what he'd meant. If he had really carried through with his threat to shank them or if he had instead decided to snap someone's arm, it wouldn't go well. At the Academy during the war it had been alright to go through with a few acts of violence, because people tended to blame whomever they were angriest at over the real culprit and so the Academy officials couldn't do any accurate investigations into the injuries. Here, however, out in the real world, Joshua was already in trouble with the law. He was grounded by order of his parents and the cops now knew his name for speeding down the street in a Lamborghini and evading arrest. He didn't want to add assault or attempted murder onto his list of offences. "Are you okay?" he wondered, furrowing his brow. He didn't see any visible injuries, but he hadn't witnessed the whole scene. He'd just come upon it midway. "Stupid fucking idiots. I hope they stumble into the street and get hit by a bus." It was a vehement threat that he didn't really mean, but he didn't like it when guys did that kind of thing. It was a violation, it wasn't 'alright' just because Freya was pretty. His parents had taught him to believe that rape and taking advantage of women was most definitely not okay, so he had very negative views of anyone that saw it differently.

So they ran off. Was it uncomfortable? Yes, it indeed was. She couldn't say there path wasn't full of little sharp objects because they really were. What was it anyway, small rocks? Some other rubbish people just had to drop on the ground? Well, probably both of those. Also the recoil from her steps was something she wasn't used to. The pavement took its toll on the girl's feet, really. Now she was certain not to go anywhere during the night without a pair of comfy sneakers near by. But it wasn't just the feet. She could feel the rage slowly drifting apart as she continued to run. It was just her, her heart beat, her breaths and that figure of Josh in front of her. The rest sort of drifted away. She couldn't even make out the sounds while running. Perhaps, she was just focused on too much at the moment. After all, she had to keep up with the guy. Damn, he had long legs. She was pretty sure some models would be jealous, you know. I mean, really, she felt as if the width of two Josh steps was the same as three Freay steps... She could keep up, thou. Shorter legs made quicker steps by default, you know.
Reaching the forest, she slowed down, running a bit on her toes, as if not to step on some pine cone or whatever. Her feet had suffered enough, thank you very much. Similar to Josh, she also found a tree to be a decent place to rest upon. Pressing her back against it, she just tried to catch her breath, her chest raising and falling with every one she took. She felt a little light headed, stopping so suddenly and all that. In all honestly, she didn't expect to end up that way. She was in the city for a simple deed, for your information. Getting groped and running in a forest barefoot was not on her 'to do' list. At least not on that date. But at least Josh was trying to get the mood up. She was a little surprised because she wouldn't expect the guy to actually shoot out a joke. Last time the two met, she recalled the guy amusing himself with Freya's fears of spiders. But she did try to laugh. "Heh... eh..." well, she tried. The breathing was still not back to normal so she couldn't really laugh, but the corners of her full lips were curled up and there was a smile on her face, revealing a bit of her pearly whites. Hey, it was funny. The bad thing was her gut stabbed itself every time she tried to laugh right then.
"Ew..." she replied on instinct as soon as she heard the words 'knew those guys'. She felt as if she had gotten dragged through the intestines of a cow... no offense to the cow. The girl actually shivered and at that noticed that her wrist was on fire... Now how the - oh right, back then, when that jackass grabbed her hand. It really hadn't felt that strong at first. Perhaps as she pushed away? Well, either way, it hurt like a bitch. The girl glanced over to her hand and only made sure of what she already knew. There was no way of telling if there were bruises in the dark. Well, she was pretty sure the stupid marks would go off after a week or so. But honestly, did it look like she knew them? Then again... he had just came in at the right moment. "I didn't even get their names... I mean, I just came to the city for a notebook... and ended up with a bunch of jerks asking me to go with them." she gave out with a sigh. Oh, perhaps it was so much easier being a boy? Really, she would assume it was. Not a lot of drunken men tried to grope boys! Well... most of them didn't!
She laughed at the words. "Well, I appreciate the thought, hun." Well, she really did. Usually Freya would say such things when getting a little defensive about her friends. It reminded her of herself at times, really. Hey, maybe they were a little alike, besides the element. You could never know, right? Well, sort of... "And I'm fine. Besides getting groped I think I only have a bruised wrist. Nothing a long shower and time can't cure." she replied with a light smile. Then again, she really wouldn't mind a drink. It might've sounded weird to some, since alcohol could be blamed for this, but she reckoned she'd feel better after one shot. Not intention on getting smashed or anything, really.
"You pop up when ever a girl is in trouble or am I just lucky?" she asked, a slight smirk playing across her lips. Hey, perhaps he was a secret hero or something. She should at least try to find out. "But thank you, Josh." she added in a sincere tone in the end.

Joshua had forgotten in their mad dash to get away from those drunken idiots that Freya was barefoot. He wasn't the most empathetic or sensitive guy around, so it didn't occur to him that she'd taken off her heels and that running through a forest barefoot could be painful and even dangerous considering that there could sometimes be broken glass from beer bottles littered everywhere. The park by his own home was a lot nicer, he recalled. It was in the upper-class neighbourhood so the Hollow's officials made sure that it was kept clean and orderly. This place didn't seem to be so lucky, but of course Joshua didn't notice thanks to the boots that he was wearing. They were the thick-soled kind that were meant for hiking, and they were also one of his favourite pairs. Apart from sunglasses, they were one of his favourite articles of clothing. He heard Freya's attempt at laughter and glanced over at her, lips twitching into a wan sort of smirk. Yeah, it sucked, didn't it? This wasn't exactly what he'd expected when he'd planned to sneak out of his house. "Jesus Christ," he breathed with an exhausted sort of chuckle. He didn't have the energy to actually start laughing yet, but their predicament was almost silly if you considered it. "Who'd have thought I'd come upon this, eh?" Even in a sarcastic sort of drawl, his native Canadian accent was still prominent, even throwing in a stereotypical word while he was at it.
Immediately after her expression of disgust, Joshua figured that Freya didn't know the men. After all, why would you say something like that if you were about to confirm the question? Sure enough, she muttered something about not knowing their names and a notebook. "Couldn't it have waited until morning?" he asked with slight exasperation. He didn't think that all girls were weak and shouldn't go out past night, but there were a lot of drunk guys about on your average night. He would know, too, because sometimes he was one of them. He'd never tried to force himself onto a girl, though. That was just a line that he wouldn't see himself crossing lest he be disgusted with himself for a very long time. "Did you have to come through the park?" The question made perfect sense to him, so he didn't hesitate before asking it. "This doesn't seem like the friendliest place to hang around after dark. I don't usually come out here, but..." The whole fact that she'd ran into a gaggle of drunken guys when she had went to walk through it insinuated that it wasn't the nicest place to be.
Freya told him that she was fine, though the fact that her wrist was bruised was slightly concerning. "Is it sprained, do you think? Can you move it around without too much pain?" It was sheer habit to ask these sorts of things when someone was hurt. It was what his father would do, usually followed by a reassuring, "Don't worry, I'm a doctor." He was a surgeon, actually, a cardiologist, but he had gone through medical school before specialisation like any good doctor would have. Joshua wished that he could give Freya the same confidence in a bad situation that his Dad gave to others, but he wasn't at that point yet. Maybe in time, though, because he had taken Biology as his major for a reason. He was going to try his best to graduate into medical school and then secure a job, possibly at Donovan's hospital in the Hollow. He already had plans to do his residency there, because most of the staff knew him and would treat him in a friendly manner when he was learning the ropes. He was almost excited to learn, but he wouldn't get ahead of himself. "We could go get it checked out if you're worried about it," he offered. "Better to catch it early than to suffer in the long run, right? But if it's just a bruise you should be okay."
The Fire elemental smirked at him, and Joshua arched an eyebrow at the question, though he couldn't resist smirking right back. "Just lucky, I think," he said honestly, seeming amused by the question. "I was just hitting the town. Nowhere in particular, just trying to kill my boredom. I decided to take a cut through the park, and well... yeah, you know the rest." He shrugged. He didn't feel that she was indebted to him for saving her ass from the drunk guys or anything, it was just something he'd done when acting out of impulse and he was nevertheless glad that she was alright. Still, Freya thanked him, and Joshua's lips twitched in response. "No problem," he said. "Were you headed home?" he asked her, brow furrowing. "I'd offer you a ride, but I walked here."
Not only that, but I'm grounded and my car is under house arrest. "I could walk with you, though. In case those guys come back."[/blockquote][/blockquote]
