"Thus they talked and evil counsels prevailed. They loosed the sack, whereupon the wind flew howling forth and raised a storm that carried us weeping out to sea and away from our own country. Then I awoke, and knew not whether to throw myself into the sea or to live on and make the best of it; but I bore it, covered myself up, and lay down in the ship, while the men lamented bitterly as the fierce winds bore our fleet back to the Aeolian island."
Sighing pleasantly, Aaron let the cover of his book close slightly. Keeping his forefinger on the page, so as not to lose his place, he studied the vinyl hardback cover with a smile. "The Odyssey" by Homer. He ran his fingertips over the inscribed lettering of the title. As he did this, a light breeze passed through. Glancing up, Aaron smiled again as the wind ruffled his hair and rustled the leaves around him. In the distance, some younger students were talking by the lake.
Shifting his position, the graduate Wind elemental chuckled at how ridiculously cliche this scene was. The sensitive male lead sitting comfortably in a treetop with a book while overlooking a picturesque view of a lake. He couldn't have written it better himself. Seemingly in response to his humour, the breeze blew stronger yet. Clicking his teeth in mild annoyance, AJ flicked the hair from his eyes and did his best to straighten it back out. As a wind elemental he always loved a good breeze, but there were still times when certain aspects of it irritated him. Still, the wind would always be special for him. Somehow it's presence always felt like that of a trusted friend. Someone he could always rely on, who never let him down. He gave a musing smile. Well, never let him down hard. Reaching up to a higher branch, Aaron plucked one of it's abundant leaves. Turning the frail foliage over in his fingertips, the elemental finally let it rest in the palm of his hand.
Pursing his lips, Aaron blew gently into his palm. As the current passed over the leaf, he watched it shiver before being carried off in the new breeze. Flexing his fingers with a whimsical air, AJ manipulated the current he created. Tilting his head back against the trunk of the tree, he watched the tiny speck of green flutter and dance against an endless backdrop of blue. Wherever he wished, the wind carried the little leaf. Swirling it around and letting it drift low before catching it with an updraft. It was like an elegant play, and he was the director and author. Just like the ones in his books. Letting "The Odyssey" fall open in his lap once more, Aaron let his leaf slowly rise above his head before spiraling down in a gentle cyclone of intermingling currents toward his upturned palm. As the leaf circled down, a final gust pushed it off course and onto the pages of his book. Raising an eyebrow, AJ stroked the leaf and closed the book on it with a bemused grin. "No matter how powerful we get, you're still going to have the last say. Aren't you?" Another gentle breeze was the response.

It was a nice day outside, and Josh was taking advantage of this. However, where most of the children were using this pleasant weather to horse around and hang out with friends, he was--not surprisingly--studying. The light wind of the day provided mild irritation by flipping the pages of his book prematurely, but it was not enough to irk the boy. He was resting in the shade of the grand stone structure, with a clear view of the wide lawn, forests, and lake that opened out in front of him. Joshua paused at the end of a chapter to observe a couple of the girls down at the lake who appeared to be arguing over something, disrupting the peaceful scene. A frown of curiosity played his lips for a moment, but he ultimately dismissed it as nothing too interesting and looked away. Though he often got pulled into certain unfavourable situations at the Academy--the war came to mind--the Fire graduate did his best to stay away from the melting pot of drama. He was here to learn, cheesy as it sounded, not to argue about alliances and gripe about the workload. It was a school; were they expecting vacation simply because they were elementals?
Another breeze caused the pages to slap against the hand that was holding the rest of the book steady, eliciting a bit of an eye roll from Joshua. Really? Shaking his head, he forced the pages back to their original position and continued to read. That was the problem with the outdoors--whilst it was nicer to read in the open air, it was a right pain in the backside when everything seemed determined to interrupt. Sighing, Joshua closed his textbook for a moment and pushed it aside, allowing it to join his study notes as he leaned back against the wall. He didn't have his sunglasses today, so his gray eyes were assaulted by the full glare of the summer sunlight. The shade in combination with the breeze was starting to bother him; being a Fire elemental, he liked the warmth and the heat from the sun. He could have just warmed himself up--one of the perks of controlling heat--but he much preferred it to be an effortless task. Before he could think about moving, however, another insistent gust of wind made his decision for him. In a flurry of study notes, one particular sheet of paper danced away from the rest.
Joshua rolled his eyes at it. "You would make me move," he said accusingly, pushing himself to his feet. He gathered up the closer pages first, shoving them between the textbook so that they were effectively trapped there. The single sheet that had started it all only danced further away from the scene of the crime, however, coming to rest against the trunk of a tree. After retrieving it, Joshua would have considered moving somewhere more comfortable if not for a sudden and unexpected voice from the branches above. His brow furrowed as he looked up--who the hell was that guy talking to? At first he'd assumed that he was with a friend, but further inspection proved the branches were empty. "Having a chat with yourself up there?" There was mild sarcasm colouring his tone, but he wasn't trying to provoke anything. This was just Joshua's personality--he was fairly blunt and tended not to filter his remarks. "What are you going on about, anyway?" The last say? It didn't make any sense in talking to yourself. Unless he was schizophrenic. That would be... something else indeed. TAGGED Aaron Colville WORDS 592 NOTES Hope you don't mind my crashing ;D Rambled a lot, sorry about that.

The words were a surprise, and caught Aaron off guard. His eyes momentarily widening a margin to register his shock, AJ glanced casually down at the other student with an interested smirk. Having a chat with himself? He chuckled. Perhaps it would seem that way to most. "Not at all." He said in a lazy tone. Rolling onto his side, he allowed an arm to hang down from the branch. "I was just having a chat with an old friend." He smiled at the newcomer. He looked to be younger, but not much. If Aaron had to place him, he would say this one was a sophomore. He couldn't yet tell which element, but he had a suspicion. Resting his chin on the back of his hand, Aaron let his other arm swing in slow lazy circles as he studied the other elemental. It was a hobby of his, or rather, more of a habit; to try and figure out as much about an individual as he could, before actually officially meeting them. Glancing at the notes in the elementals hand and books, he guessed the reason for this one's intrusion.
To keep the conversation going, he didn't want the fellow thinking he was just staring, AJ continued on about his 'old friend.' "I see you've met him as well." He made a gentle current rustle the paper in his hand as a hint. "After all," he gestured to the loose piece of paper, "Why else would you be over here disrupting my peace?" He said the last bit with a placating grin. He didn't want to upset anyone. After all, he wasn't really disrupting anything. Taking in his new acquaintance's appearance, AJ tilted his head. Black hair, a sarcastic wit, and scars that attest to lots of fighting. He raised his chin onto his palm, and clicked his teeth. He'd almost be attractive if not for that scar. Although, it did grant his facade an air of danger. "You must be a fire elemental." He spoke plainly. Smiling cheerfully, he added. "I can tell." It was unusual for Aaron to be so friendly with a stranger. A fire especially, but he was in an unusually peaceful mood today. Besides, this one looked like he might be entertaining.
Deciding he'd spent quite enough time looking down on his new playmate. Even if it did give him a lovely sense of superiority over the man. AJ swung his legs over the branch and slid off. As a Wind elemental, he couldn't fly, but he could cushion his fall. Using updrafts to slow his descent slightly, Aaron landed with a light spring, book in hand. Now that he was on ground level, the elemental noticed for the first time just how tall this guy was. He may have been younger but he still stood a good bit taller than Aaron. Recovering from his momentary interest in the man's height. AJ held out the hand not holding "The Odyssey" for the Fire to take. "My name's Aaron, but most call me AJ." He held his other arm close across his body, holding his side. It was something he always did around new people. "Who might you be?"

Joshua cocked a smooth brow at the other male, a sort of judgemental doubt flickering in the depths of his gray eyes. He's nuts, isn't he? He was a rather serious person by nature and thus didn't immediately assume that Aaron was joking--not until the wind rustled the pages of his notes and the man spoke again. He was clearly a Wind elemental by the way he could manipulate the breeze like that, but Joshua had never met him before. This wasn't very surprising. Josh wasn't friendly by any means, not unless you had a hell of a lot of patience and understanding on your hands. It still shocked him that Nell refused to call an end to their friendship, especially thanks to the very rocky start it had. "I would hope it wasn't your fault the wind is so insistent today," Joshua frowned, wondering if the man had been sitting up in that tree and bothering everyone with currents. After all, Wind elementals were unpredictable. They didn't have a category in which they could be pigeon-holed. "It's rather bothersome to be interrupted in the middle of studying." Studying, which was something this guy looked like he might have been doing himself shortly before the scene unfolded. Or was he just reading in his spare time?
A subtle frown played his lips when the Wind elemental called him out for his own affiliation. "So what if I am?" He wasn't perhaps as antagonistic and pushy as most of his kind, but he still had quite the temper and he was finding himself irritated by how cheerfully this guy called him out. "Are you suggesting my sarcasm makes me predictable?" He was quite offended by this, seeing as there were irritable folks in all five of the elements. He'd even met a moody Earth student before, though those were admittedly quite rare. He caught the man examining the scars and scowled in obvious disapproval. "It's rude to stare," he pointed out bluntly. Alright, so maybe Aaron wasn't staring, but Joshua was quite self-conscious when it came to the marks that marred his skin. No one knew where they'd come from except the boy himself, but people tended to make assumptions. Some of these were heinous and ridiculous, others at least sensible, but no one could possibly know that he'd been attacked. It wasn't something your average person concluded. The fact that he was a Fire elemental led most to believe that, well, "He probably brought it upon himself."
Hence why he didn't get along with 'most' people.
The man stuck out his hand and Joshua tensed for a moment, unsure of how to react. After a brief moment's hesitation, he brought his own hand up and shook his hand firmly. Distrust still kindled behind the colourless gaze of the Fire elemental, but it wasn't like he was here to start a fight. He was just naturally wary and a little bit standoffish. "Joshua Dale," he introduced himself, considering the Wind elemental had asked. Aaron, he'd called himself. Aaron or AJ. Josh hadn't really heard of him, but he dismissed that with ease. There were a lot of people he'd never heard of. "Just Dale, to most." It wasn't that he insisted upon going by his surname, it was the fact that not many people knew him personally, so they addressed him impersonally. He didn't know whether Aaron would have heard his name tossed around, and as with a lot of things, it didn't matter to him. Under the Fire's responses, AJ had visibly withered. The Wind elemental still didn't deal well with aggression, or disapproval, or any form of dominance. When faced with such situations, Aaron tended to become a little submissive. Very submissive actually. However, despite the Fire elementals obvious distrust, AJ was happy to see that he still took his outstretched hand. He was taking the proverbial olive branch, one might say. His name was Joshua Dale. AJ had never heard of him, and judging from the look on his face at the Dale comment, that was a surprising feat. Allowing the name to sink into his memory, Aaron took a moment before smiling. "A pleasure to meet you Josh."
Aaron had heard that most people called Josh Dale, but calling someone by their surname seemed to be such an impersonal way of calling them. Besides, AJ didn't like to follow with the norms of the population. Releasing Josh's hand, Aaron folded his arms across his stomach and frowned slightly. "Sorry about...er." He trailed off awkwardly and averted his eyes." He was of course mentioning the staring thing. He hadn't meant to cause offense. In fact, it seemed everything AJ said had caused some form of offense with this guy. Shrinking visibly, AJ quickly lost his pleasant attitude. He was all apologies now, which he knew would probably just irritate Josh further.
"Also, In my defense, i don't consider fire elementals to be any more predictable than the others." He shrugged his shoulders. "To me, everyone is predictable if you pay attention." He gave a strained half smile. "And although slightly amusing, the breezes were all natural today." He hugged his book to his chest. "I don't use my powers for trifling mischief. Most days at least." He added the last part with a grin. "Like i said when you got here. My friend always has the last say." He chuckled and leaned back against the tree trunk. Turning his head to look at the lake. Partially to avoid Josh's eyes, and partially to avoid looking at his scar. He'd hate to give the Fire student another reason to dislike him.

A pleasure? Was it? Joshua couldn't be sure. Naturally, the abrasive and cold manner with which he treated others was something the Fire elemental was aware of. He didn't, perhaps, intend to come across as so rude, but... sometimes it was just impossible for him to keep calm and say nothing. However, when the other male even went as far as to apologise for staring at the scars, Joshua frowned a bit. Should I believe him? He definitely didn't seem as if he was coming from a place of dishonesty, it was just Josh's natural and immediate reaction to doubt something. "Just... be more careful about that in the future," he decided tersely. He wasn't here to start a fight, after all. He didn't want to make enemies. The scars just made him uncomfortable and he couldn't help that, no matter who it was that he was talking to. Even Nell staring would make him uncomfortable. Then again, she knew what they were from. It was a bit different.
Josh folded his arms slightly when Aaron said something about predictability, not liking the way in which he was still, in a way, pigeon-holing Josh into the category of his elemental kin. There was a reason why it bothered him, and it ran deeper than just a dislike of being called simple or easy to figure out. He didn't get along with most of the Fire elementals. They'd turned on his best friend and then they'd cast him out when he refused to do the same. He didn't appreciate being likened to them. But he supposed he couldn't blame this guy for that. Aaron didn't know of his complicated inner workings, after all. "It still doesn't always do to judge a man within five seconds of meeting him," he pointed out. There was a strained aspect to his tone that suggested he was trying to play nice, and you had to hand it to him--at least he was making the effort to civilise himself. He might not be able to skip through the lawn and befriend everyone in sight, but it was also unwise to go making an enemy out of everyone he met.
Especially this man, who seemed rather shy and soft now that he thought about it. Josh might have been making an effort, but it was indeed getting more and more difficult to stay kind and polite with someone that had given a bad first impression. Calm down. He focused on what Aaron was saying, something about the wind again. "Do you always talk about it like it's a sentient being?" Oh, jeez. That came out a little less nice than he'd been intending. He hadn't quite been snide and sneering, but he couldn't say with certainty that his tone had been void of the slightest snark. He just couldn't be decent to anyone, could he? It was such an effort to be nice. "I can't recall ever referring to the flames as my friends." He flicked his hand and the fire came to him just as loyally as an old friend might have, vanishing as quickly as it had appeared. "It's an element to me, nothing more."
