Honestly, freshmen could be so... Ugh, annoying, Leif wasn't one to be like that to most people, honestly! He was a nice person who didn't find people annoying, but these freshmen were just, gah! Leif had never felt more anger and frustration towards a group of people before, it was unbearable to listen to these... For a lack of a better word noobs, yes noobs, he had no other word to describe him in his frustration against them, sure it was probably the worst word to use and there was a more educated word to describe these annoyances, but in his anger and frustration, Leif found himself settling on the first word that came to mind, no matter how stupid it sounded. Leif made his way through the never ending waves of freshman, he didn't know why they were so abundant, annoying and knit close this year, but he didn't like it, it was suffocating! There was no where Leif could escape to, his common room was boring, his room was boring, mess hall was crowded and pretty much every where else Leif spent his time at, eventually he gave up and went to the library, sure, there was a chance that freshman would be there, swarming the computers but at least he could hide with his stolen laptop and some books.
Finally getting himself inside the library, he almost cried out in joy over the lack of freshmen, it was like heaven, only in school, but there was one issue that still remained, what if something war related came up? Sure, he was neutral in this but he was still an earth student which made him a target, not exactly a large target but a target indeed. Right, issues from the war was the last thing he needed, he was already stressing out of the waves of freshmen and he would snap if something war related came his way, what if the freshmen swarms were a cause of the war? Ugh, Leif wanted to just rip out his long hair, he really doubted the assumption, but of course he was a novice at this thing, never really paying attention to previous fight - if there was any - before. He wondered why this one caught his attention so much then, maybe it was how sever it was? Or maybe it was because of Ashton, he really had no idea, or maybe he was right and there was no war beforehand, he doubted the latter option though.
Not even bothering to go to the computer desks and attempt to do something on the computer, he felt that being frustrated right now was a bad idea to get even more frustrated at technology, and anyways if the damned noobs came in, Leif did not want to be in their most populated areas, he loved the internet, he really but god dammit, they were getting on his last nerves! Leif wasn't an angry person so this mood was a surprise to him, he guessed that freshman must be very annoying to him, but this was a first with him, he swears, if the freshman next year as this bad, screw his morals, he's blowing them up.
Moving upstairs to the safety of the books, he moved into a low populated section and began to scan for a book, something to catch his eye or something, and as he finally found something interesting, all hell broke loss. Inwardly Leif swore and outwardly he sighed, he could hear the noisy chatter of the freshman and he dropped his hand from the book he was going to grab and exhaled heavily, groaning.
"Why?!"

Joshua had never really bothered with the freshmen as much as the other Fire students seemed to. He was mature enough that he didn't feel like terrorising them was fun, and he'd been bothered enough in his own freshman year to know that it wasn't as glorious when you were on the receiving end of the bullying. Scrawling nines all over the faces of freshman was for regular high-schools; at the Academy, you got shiny burns and thundershocks to welcome you to the student ranks. But not, thankfully, from Joshua Dale. The only time he'd ever hurt a freshman was when they'd provoked his temper, he'd never really initiated the first contact. But if there was one thing that the sophomore could not stand, it was when they took their lazy, procrastinating behinds to the library to sit and talk. They had the entirety of the school and grounds for their sitting and chattering pleasure, and yet the lot of them seemed to relocate to the quietest and most relaxing place in the Academy to 'study'. The only thing they 'studied' was, 'that hot guy from fourth period!'.
He was about ready to knock someone out when the librarian caught sight of his glaring, giving him a sympathetic grimace. "Sorry, Joshua," the old woman said earnestly. She was quite fond of the Fire student thanks to his respectful use of the library. He'd never burned a single one of her books and always came bearing numerous apologies if he even forget to return something a day late due to the stress of classes. "They've got slips from the teachers saying they've got to be in and studying." He sighed, remembering that as a freshman you could indeed get such 'study slips' from your classes to ensure that you got your work done and got into good habits. "I know," he said, resigned. "They're just..." He cast another tired glance, and she finished, "Annoying you?" He nodded. "Yes. Very much so." He'd moved from his usual section (History, for it was favourite subject) to a more commercial section for he was not studying for a History paper, but it seemed he was going to have to flee to his little inter-library lair regardless.
He had gotten up and just finished packing his large collection of study books into his bag in preparation for the move when he heard both the incessant chatter of the freshman and a frustrated cry from a close-by row of shelving. Standing up, Joshua glanced over to the area from whence the sound had came and recognised someone else who was here a lot, but who he didn't know on much of a personal level. "Annoying, eh?" he said regardless, sympathising. "You should try another floor. It's quieter there." Freshmen usually trolled the first floor like it was their day job, but it didn't seem to occur to them that the library had multiple levels. Joshua whole-heartedly worked this to his advantage. The third and final floor was where his usual haunt was located, but he was pretty secretive about it. He didn't like to be bugged. Unfortunately, Joshua had a reputation. Just like Asha and Ace Woods were known for rivalry, Elaine for blindness, and Tatyana for ruthlessness, Joshua was known for being the biggest bookworm on campus.
Leif was also rather booksmart, and that was why Joshua knew his name. He generally got to 'know' the library regulars, even if he never spoke to them in person. Josh cursed his natural curiosity for that fact. He wondered if Leif knew who he was, but didn't ask. The guy was an Earth student, he knew that much. Does that mean we're like allies now, or...? Of course, Joshua wasn't aware that Leif was technically neutral. And maybe Leif didn't know Joshua had betrayed Fire and Thunder. Miscommunication was very possible.

The chatter seemed to have no end, it was continuous and getting higher? No, that was the sound of Leif's brain reaching a point where it would self-destruct into goo and Leif would bat shit crazy all over the freshman. Leif snickered to himself, nah, more of it was the fact that these preteens were somehow on helium, or maybe he was right and his brain was exploding, whatever floats his own boat he guessed. Sighing, his eyes darted to the side, looking at the chattering annoyances, weren't they supposed to be quiet in the library?! Leif guessed not since they were chattering away like monkeys, he guessed that they probably had some sort of study hall note or something that allowed them being in here without getting booted out by the poor librarian, he felt sorry for the lady, having to deal with them twenty four seven, he could leave, she couldn't.
Running a finger through his dark hair, he began to knock his head against the bookcase, it hurt of course, but the pain caused the ever annoying voices to disappear just a little more, until another voice caught him. Turning his head a bit, he saw an older guy, he was someone he had seen multiple times around before the library, he remembered asking for the name of the student from the librarian - he liked knowing the regulars - what was it again? Then it hit him, he was a fire graduate if he recalled, someone by the name of Joshua, the librarian seemed fond of him by the way her voice held no annoyance when she spoke of him, so Leif guessed that was good and by the way he spoke, he didn't seem so bad, but of course he couldn't judge a book by it's cover. Wait, he was a fire student, didn't that mean technically they were enemies? Leif was unsure, the boy could be neutral or one of the guys that turned on their own groups - he had been surprised there was some - so he better not press and find out for himself.
Leif turned his whole body to face Josh and gave a small thank you smile. "Yes, they are." Leif mused, "I don't know how much more I can take before I explode." Sure, earth students were calm but they had their own little berserk buttons, Leif's was his family and freshman but who cared about that? No one tended to push those buttons and this is the first year freshman really started to get to him so, he had never really exploded in the past, but hey, was to late to start. Really thinking about it, Leif doubted the boy even cared, rubbing his neck awkwardly, he continued to speak regardless; "True, these freshman don't seem to understand there are higher levels," now that was just a point of stupidity on their half, Leif didn't quite get how you could miss it, "but the sound carries pretty well here, so even so, the sound is still as annoying as it is on this floor." Leif sighed, there was no sanctuary right now, everywhere was flooded with them
Running a hand through his hair, he moved and grabbed the book from the shelf, the one he had be reaching for in the first place. It was a book of fairy tales, something Leif indulged himself in, he loved fairy tales the most out of all types of stories; by this he meant the classic type of story, not like, what was that book? Twilight, now that was just horrendous, Leif had read the whole series since it was a phenomenal book, but how wrong was that. Pulling himself from his thoughts he looked at the boy in front of him again, and decided, why not make small talk? Might be able to drown out the devils, um, freshman. "Your name is Josh right?" Leif asked oddly, why was the shy guy trying to do this? Why?
He was dying that's why.

Joshua arched a brow slightly as he watched the other boy start to bang his head off the bookcase. "No matter how irritating, they're not worth the cost of your brain cells," he said a bit dryly. He remembered having gotten a concussion once and regaining consciousness in the hospital--he'd been more worried about the possible effects on his intelligence and thought process than the fact that if he fell asleep he was most likely never going to wake up. "Plugging your ears would be more effective, but then you'd look like an idiot. I suppose there's no way to win." Joshua shrugged. He wasn't saying that Leif was an idiot, only that he'd look like one if he went around with his fingers jammed in his ears--Joshua was a dick at times, though, so it could definitely be taken the wrong way if he wasn't careful. Joshua usually didn't care. Let people think of him what they liked, it hardly phased him any more. He was a loner, he liked it that way. Even of the friends he had, he hardly trusted any of them.
He shook his head in disagreement of the next statement however. "No need to be overdramatic," he said, not caring all that much if he came off as rude. "Once you get up a floor or two, it's much easier to focus." He wasn't appreciative of exaggeration like some would have been. Joshua was generally a very serious and level-minded person. He joked on occasion because of his mother's free-spirited attitude, but he hardly ever just went with the things others said if he didn't agree with them. And Joshua practically spent his life in this library--fleeing upstairs did help. It wasn't like the freshmen were shouting at each other, they were only talking, it just sounded so loud and prominent in contrast to the usual comforting silence of this sanctuary. This boy just seemed to really hate the freshmen, and so he was probably exaggerating quite a bit due to his predisposition.
He blinked. Alright, so Leif did know who he was. "Yes," he replied, "I'm Joshua." Most people of the Academy had fallen into the habit of calling him 'Dale', so he figured Leif had found out about him from other sources, though he didn't guess that the librarian would have been the boy's informant. As for Joshua, he'd just overheard a conversation with people in Leif's class during a lunch break. They'd mentioned his name in passing and Josh had made the connection that this must be the quiet Earth boy in the library. Most of what the Fire graduate knew he knew from observing, eavesdropping, rumours. He wasn't a gossip and he hardly ever brought these things to the table around others, he was just a naturally curious person who liked to feel informed. "If I'm not mistaken, yours is Leif. Earth student, though I'm not aware of your standing in this war." He arched both brows this time, as if wondering whether Leif would inform him of his allegiance.
A high-pitched giggle from a Water girl made him roll his eyes, and he glanced toward the half-hidden spiralling staircase that led to the second floor. He supposed he could see why the freshman often overlooked it, but he'd found it on one of his first few trips here. You also spend a lot of time here, he reminded himself, then turned back to Leif and said, "Well, I don't plan to stand here until my ears bleed. If you're going to come, you'd better take the book with you." Joshua himself had in hand a thick ancient history volume, ever the history nerd. The rest of his books were in the bag that was currently straining his right shoulder.

"You have a point there." Leif mumbled, he looked at Josh from the corner of his eye, raising an eyebrow at the next statement, once again it was true but odd to say, but of course Leif wasn't one to judge. He let his head tilt a bit before shaking off Josh's comment completely, he really had to stop analyzing everything people said, that's why Leif read, it was easy to lose yourself in the books and leave the analyzing for the reread, unlike life which moved to quickly for Leif to live in the moment before analyzing, he had to do everything at once and it wasn't easy for him. Maybe his over-analyzing was why he had no friends? No, he'd blame that on his perspective of friends.
Giving a small shrug, Leif understood that he was most likely blowing this situation completely out of proportion but whatever, he could be dramatic when he wanted couldn't he? He was just annoyed really, and that lead to exaggeration of anything really, he really had to watch himself when he over exaggerated. Leif found no real reason to even bother fighting back or even responding on this, Josh was right, he was being dramatic, they were only talking - rather loudly might he add - not yelling, he found the shrug sufficient in his attempt to respond to the older boy.
"And correct you would be." Odd wording to it, but a plain answer to Josh, his standing? Well, that was a touchy subject, he was neutral for the whole of it, but more leaning towards Nell's side, now, if he was on the opposing side this could lead to a bad situation, but seeing as he wasn't attacking him or anything of the sort, Leif guessed he might as well attempt at something. "Neutral, for the most part. Leaning towards Nell if anything." Leif watched Josh with some interest now, he didn't know where Josh would land in this war and he hoped not on the opposing end, he wasn't sure how he would fend against the boy in case he decided to do something, but from what he heard of the librarian's bits of praise, Josh wouldn't do that here. "And yourself?"
As Josh spoke his blue eyes darted to the staircase as he nodded slightly, shifting the quite thick book of fairy tales in his fingers, before his eyes dropped to Josh's book, it was a thick history book, Leif wasn't a big history nut - excluding the mythology - and leaned more towards fairy tales and myths, he liked the ideas that came from them and the whimsicalness to it he could be captured in the fantasy stories for hours before returning to reality. Maybe Leif hated reality because of the pain it brought to him, he hated reality sometimes and other times he was quite content with it, but everyone preferred to dream than to be in the real world didn't they? In your dreams everything could come true, or at least that's how Leif looked at it. Maybe Josh was an opposition to that, as he had observed from some people, history nuts tended to prefer the realism of everything, but there was always the exception, maybe Josh was one, he would never know unless he asked or Josh said so himself, but Leif being Leif, he wouldn't ask, and unless Josh made the move to comment on it himself, Leif would be forever in the dark, oh well, the price of being shy was high. Leif nodded once more to himself more of as he confirmed the idea inside his he before moving to follow the boy, deciding to let the graduate lead the way.

The two were both quiet by nature, though for different reasons. It was clear that Leif seemed pretty shy and reserved, whereas Joshua was just a solitary personality. Whilst some craved the comfort and companionship of their friends, Joshua would find ways to deal with being alone if the situation arose. He didn't pine for company, but rather enjoyed the absence of others by reading a book or something. It was, therefore, not really surprising when you considered the amount of books he'd read. The boy had an entire library back home in the mansion dedicated to his books. There were even more books in the basement, though all of those belonged to his family as a whole, rather than Joshua himself. The Dale family archives were just that--an archive containing all scripture, recordings, and anything else involving the family name. They were a very old family that went back for generations upon generations, and they held name to a massive fortune as well, hence the mansion. So it was only natural that he'd become independent. You didn't exactly make many friends on your street when it was massive and only contained one or two other houses. The mansions were widely spaced.
Neutral. Joshua considered this for a long moment. Well, so was Elaine, and he concluded after a moment that 'neutral, leaning toward Nell' was a lot better than being on the side of the people that were trying to kill her. Still, Leif was an Earth student? Did he not feel the kinship that most elementals did with those of similar affinity? You betrayed your own alliance pretty quick, he reminded himself. "I'm with Nell," he said without hesitating, studying the other boy with intense gray eyes as if expecting his views to be challenged. It wasn't often that the Fire elementals betrayed their own, Joshua knew this well, but if anyone accused him of dishonesty there was going to be hell to pay. He saw Nell as a very close friend, and he'd be damned if he let anyone hurt her if there was something he could do to stop it. "Completely and totally." There was no gray area in between--only black and white, good and evil. Death was permanent, murder stayed with you. He knew from experience. He'd never killed someone in his life, but he'd stood and watched someone die. It couldn't be erased.
Noticing that the other boy was not moving, Joshua took the incentive and departed for the staircase. He honestly didn't care whether Leif followed him or not--Josh was not social, he could live without company if the Earth elemental chose to stay on the ground floor and put up with the incessant giggling of the freshmen. He could have went all the way to the other side of the second floor and up the other staircase once he'd reached the landing, but instead he scanned the area for a good place to sit. There were a few people here, but it was mostly quiet due to those people trying to get some honest work done. Josh's gaze settled on an empty table, which he then wandered over to and sat down at. Long, pale fingers fiddled on the desk as he wondered whether he should study or just sit for a moment and wait for his headache to start fading. It would be easy to concentrate without one.
Sighing slightly, the graduate started to unpack the large amounts of study material from his bag, pulling out a couple of assignments as well. They were not due until much later in the week, but that didn't matter to Joshua--he hardly ever procrastinated, it made him uneasy to leave things lying around. "You can sit here if you want," he said in Leif's general direction, not looking at him as he shrugged and hunted down one of his good pens. "I don't bite." He figured that the Earth elemental might be a tad wary of him thanks to their natural status as enemies. "I might not be neutral, but as long as you're not opposed to Nell's side..." He trailed off, allowing the rest to be inferred. If Leif wasn't trying to kill Nell, Joshua wouldn't attack him. Simple as that.
