The morning had been surprisingly calm. Joshua had always been a morning person--as a child growing up in the mansion, he'd enjoyed rising earlier than the rest of his family so that he had at least a few minutes to himself. Josh enjoyed peace, he liked solitude. So perhaps it was only natural that both qualities carried over into his life at school. He was up before the sun had even peeked it's light over the horizon, and the Earth dormitories were dark and shadowy as he glanced around the common room. Still feels like I'm intruding, here, he thought to himself. The Earth elementals were kind enough to allow him shelter here when his own former allies had expelled him from their midst, but this place was nothing like what he was used to.
The Fire dormitories had walls of charred and blackened stone, hot to the touch with a sweltering environment to boot. The common room had multiple fireplaces and they were almost always lit, casting shadowy firelight in even the darkest of nights. Everything was decorated in darker colours paired with scarlet and crimson, and the rough hewn walls always made it feel like you were travelling through a cave when you explored the areas branching off from the main room. The Earth dorms, however, were nothing like that. It was peaceful and 'homey' here. There was only one fireplace, and it was hardly ever lit because of an instinctual--and sensible, he supposed--fear of fire. The walls and floor were made of earth, with vines and flowers and other plants just growing right out of the wall. The fragrance of the many flowers permeated the air, and it made him dizzy at first seeing as he was unaccustomed. It wasn't that the place was uninviting, it was just... different.
Was it a good fact that he was the first one to rise that morning? Joshua furrowed his brow with a frown, trying to decide what to make of this. He really wasn't sure. Did he want the company? It doesn't matter, he decided. Normally he'd spend the morning studying but he was a tad uncomfortable hitting the books and sprawling out on one of the couches like he would have done in his own environment. When he was here it always felt as if he might accidentally shatter something with a single touch--the wariness of the Earth elementals toward him suggested as much. It makes sense, he thought, resisting the urge to sigh. I am a Fire elemental, after all. It was just a bit awkward. He sat down with his hands in his lap as if having them stray too far would catch the entire room on fire.
It didn't help when he realised the date--Saturday morning, which meant that he had absolutely no classes and nothing to do. He didn't mind a day off every once and a while, but during a war his classes were actually a welcome distraction from the fact that everyone was trying to slaughter his friend. The fact that they were targeting Nell made his stomach twist every time he thought about it, so his solution was simple--don't think. Unfortunately, when a thought was meant to be forbidden from your mind, it usually ended up making things worse. He would likely be stuck here until either the mess hall or the library opened, for those were the only places he really felt that he could go to hang out right now. He still had a red mark from the burns inflicted on him when he'd been stupid enough to try and sneak into the Fire dormitories to get his textbook, so he was now forced to use the school set. They were doodled on with pages torn out and it was just the most nightmarish experience with a book he'd ever had. Joshua noticed that some of the other students were starting to wake, and he figured that it must be morning for real now.

living is easy with eyes closed - - - - misunderstanding all you see - - - - Sleep was something Sean was definitely good at. He liked sleeping so much he'd wish his sleeps were all so long and comfy... be awaken by a kiss every morning. At that, the boy got up all of a sudden and completely forgot his train of thought. That feeling when you were dreaming something so vivid and that when you woke up, you forget entirely, unable to remember what had gone through the past few hours. The sudden dizziness hit him in the head as he sat up from bed and he felt his body falling back into the sheets, snuggling his pillow close to his heart. He liked pillows alongside liking eating chocolates. He frowned though, when he felt that the pillow was too thin for him to squeeze and he wondered where his favorite pillow had gone to...
Oh right, he was in the academy now. In the dormitories. Where the bunk was as comfy as the cold floor and the pillows as fluffy as a bean pole. Or maybe he was just being too exaggerated. The bed was fine, the pillows were too and the fact that nothing itched was a plus. Bedbugs were out of the picture too. So why exactly was he frowning...? Probably adjusting to a new place was actually harder than he'd thought. He'd grown used to his own bedroom back in the small house with his Nana that it might take him some time to get used to his own space in the massive castle. Sleeping proved difficult too. Sean had been drifting in and out of sleep for the whole night, always sitting ramrod straight and then falling back into the sheets. Instead of feeling well rested, he felt more tired the longer this continued. He was sleep-deprived and he wanted to sleep... and water too, his throat felt parched.
Groaning into the pillow for as loud as only he could hear, he rose up ever so slowly and felt around for his comfy slippers. He walked quietly, minding the other sleeping forms around him and looked to the window, the sky caught in between night and day. A rather astonishing sight, when darkness fought for its place against the light. He would've stood there and admired it... if he wasn't so sleepy and needing to refresh his dry throat. Sean tried to lift his foot one at a time and found that difficult, the call of the bed as strong as his desire to get his throat refreshed. Lucky he didn't need much of his sight as he walked blindly across the corridors and heading for the common room.
The whole place was brimming with life and leaves bristled as he passed by, feeling the presence of an earth elemental walking by them; attracted to it, wanting to be caressed by it. Involuntarilly, Sean's hand raised to the wall and felt vine and leaf brush by it, guiding him to where he was headed. He was asleep on his feet.
However, as he passed by a couch toward his destination... his legs caught on someone elses and he fell, face down, onto the floor. Lucky enough, the vines, as if they had a life of their own, though mostly because probably Sean's little training in defense saved him, supported his fall and he hanged there, a feet from getting his face smacked. His eyes fluttered open and life was pumped back into his sleepy body, realizing the pain he'd have suffered if it weren't for his ever safety mechanism. He breathed a sigh of relief and scrambled up, noticing the sun finally breaking through the darkness of the night. How long had it taken him to walk from the bedroom to the commons?
Sleep usually dulled time and awareness so he didn't know.
All he knew was that it was almost morning now and luckily, looking around, no one saw his embarassing act, except for one maybe. The one he'd tripped upon. Turning around, he bowed his head, much to his dismay for he never bowed to anyone, and apologized.
"Sorry," was what came out of his mouth and feeling awkward, straightened up and looked at the boy infront of him, as rigid as a rock on where he was sitting. Sean's brows furrowed as he noticed this but bit his ever curious self from asking why the boy looked so... stiff. Instead, he turned and headed for the water tank, his throat hurting from the sudden use. He wondered why he'd bowed and left it to the reason that mayhaps, since his rationale was still asleep, he was doing things out of his control.

On any other morning, in any other place, Joshua Dale would have torched any sorry soul that had the nerve to trip over him. He was impulsive and angry by nature, being a Fire elemental and all, so it wasn't uncommon for him to lose his cool at the drop of a hat and totally go off on someone simply because they'd not been watching their step. Thankfully for Sean, however, that morning would be considerably different. Everything in the Earth dormitories seemed so untouchable and fragile to Joshua that he just sat stiff and didn't touch a thing, afraid that he'd incinerate the walls just by looking at them or that the vines would burn away under the caress of his fingers. Because this was how he'd been taught to think--Earth was fragile when it came in contact with fragile. This entire place could burn to the ground if he allowed his elemental kinesis to take hold of it. So he did not. And it was this concentration against hurting any of the delicate beauty around him that probably saved the very Earth elemental who'd tripped over his foot.
"Ack!" Gray eyes went wide and muscles stiffened in alarm as the contact was made, every bone in his body screaming for him to turn around and retaliate. His volatile personality meant that he was a powder keg of anger and dangerous thoughts waiting to be disrupted, but the fact that he'd been so careful in keeping calm and still meant that there was a moment--just a fraction of a second--where he realised that the boy was not some unseen attacker and managed to keep his powers under control. There was a warning wave of warmth which swept over the somewhat drafty common room, but nothing strong enough to spark flame and nothing that would harm the Earth student who'd 'attacked' him.
Joshua's breaths had quickened with the alarm, and his eyes were filled with a guarded semi-hostile emotion as the stranger straightened up and turned toward him. That trick he had done with the vines was quite impressive, but of course all elementals could do strange and crazy stuff when they were in danger. However, Josh still had a question of his own--was he in any sort of trouble? I'm the one trespassing here, not this guy. That thought made him uncomfortable, and the hostile wariness started to fade slowly. Sean apologised after some weird sort of motion that Joshua in his confused state could not place, then turned away and started to shuffle over to something that looked like a water cooler. They had water down here? Maybe for the plants? I don't know. Water couldn't survive in the Fire dormitories thanks to the sweltering heat, and that only further reminded Joshua of the fact that he was trespassing on some sort of sacred ground here. He didn't belong here. "It's, uh, it's fine," he said quickly, and now his throat felt a tad dry. Nervous, perhaps? "I guess I should have been paying more attention."
Rubbing nervously at the back of his neck, Joshua noticed with relief that it was at least nearing morning. It was still a good hour before the mess hall would be open for the students to get snacks and the like, but at very least it was getting closer to a time of freedom. Josh was a college student and thus free to wander as he pleased, but that didn't mean he could get into places when they were still closed. Except maybe the library. He'd been told by the librarian that he could sneak in after hours as long as he was responsible with whatever book he needed to retrieve. She was fond of him, of this he was relieved. Licking his lips so that his voice didn't crack, Joshua found himself slightly concerned after the welfare of the guy who'd tripped. He hadn't looked injured, but it wasn't like Josh had gotten up and studied him. "Hey... you're okay, right?" Feeling a little awkward, he added, "I mean, you're not hurt or anything? The vines looked like they broke your fall and everything, but I, uh, I wouldn't really know." He didn't do plants and shit.

living is easy with eyes closed - - - - misunderstanding all you see - - - - Heading now with open eyes to the water tank, Sean noticed how the coldness of the room left swiftly and in its absence warmth started to flood in. His shivering body, one he hadn't noticed when he got out of bed, found itself relaxing, his heart calming. Not that he was against the cold or anything, but this boy loved the sun and with how rarely the sun seemed to shine, for now, in this part of the country, every few seconds of warmth was welcome to him. He found himself stretching and letting out a rather long yawn, the sleep in him leaving his bone and muscle. He reached behind the table for a cup and poured himself a full one, gulping it all in one motion before pouring himself another one.
He hadn't realized he was that thirsty.
As he drank, he noticed how the plants seemed to creep in closer to the dripping water and he almost smacked the greedy greens. Almost. Earth was his element and the basics had been engraved in his brain the moment his powers started to show. Thanks to his Nana, he had a bit of a training before coming to the school and he had specialized in plants. These vines that were now starting to move, the presence of himself giving them the freedom to do so, were trying to get the water they wanted.
"No babies," he crooned, caressing the leaves. "You can have 'em later when it's time." Sean spoke softly, as if to a baby. There was a schedule for watering the plants and if it were not followed, it would end badly for the receiver. Too much water resulted into drowning. Sean had completely forgotten about the earlier incident, his eyes now soft with care and when the boy he'd tripped upon spoke behind him, he jumped slightly. His brain was still starting to wake up.
"Oh," he turned around, water swishing in his cup. "It was my fault," he smiled warmly, walking forward. "I should have been more awake and watched where the floor was. Guess I've gotten lazy with how these plants guide you wherever," he chuckled, gesturing to the plants and greeneries that covered the earth dormitories from top to bottom and vice versa. These weren't normal plants, everyone would know that. They could move by themselves if they wanted, grown most probably by the masters of the craft and whatever it was that gave movement to them was beyond him. All he knew was that when he'd set foot into the dorm, the plants had welcomed him, not by just hanging still but by moving around his feet. He had just stared at the floor and walls for a whole hour then.
He landed a spot beside the boy and gulped down the last of his water, forgetting his manners. From the top of his cup, he looked up at the boy, again, his stiffness not missing Sean's scrutinizing eyes.
"You want some?" he asked, keeping the cup on his bottom lip. He was just about to rise when the boy asked for his welfare. D'awww. Sean would never really grow used to the caring nature of earth students around him. He'd grown used to violence and black eyes. People usually shot first before asking; 'specially when they were drunk. He cleared his throat to free his voice of its raspiness, he was still in the process of reviving his body.
"Yep," he said, turning around as his arm came to rest on the back of the couch, making himself comfortable. "The vines acted as a cushion and kept me from kissing the floor intimately," he rolled his eyes at himself and grinned at the boy... who wouldn't really know anything about vines. Curious, he studied the boy further and when realization finally hit the bull's eye in his head, memory still fresh from the attack he'd endured to save, his now bestfriend, Tasmin, he was up against a wall. Back flat against the cold surface. The movement had been fast, mostly due to his defensive reaction and since the bruises and scars were still fresh on his lean form, it had given him enough strength to scramble to the wall farthest from the boy.
"You... the warmth... fire... stiff..." Sean said as he pointed an accusing finger to the boy. Everything just snapped into perspective and he spoke in an incoherent line of words, unable to keep his mind from talking loudly. He looked to the windows and saw the sun just about rising up, not enough to warm the morning air and since the fireplace was rarely, almost never lit, the warmness from earlier couldn't have just poofed out of thin air unless someone was doing it. Now that he noticed it, the air had been warmer when he sat closer to the boy and now that he was this far, the air wasn't as warm.

A weird, unsettled feeling pricked at his stomach as Joshua watched the boy scolding the plants. He was speaking to them as if they were people, like they could understand him and didn't just count as decorations for the walls around them. Now, this was something that Josh was not used to. The Fire elementals didn't sit and have chats with their torches unless they were absolutely batshit mental--they'd had a crazy fellow once, he remembered--but as he watched the plants more carefully, he could have sworn they were responded. Not verbally, but... Is he making them do that? Curiosity joined the discomfort, but he tried not to appear too interested as he glanced around the room. He was oh so out of place here, it became more and more obvious as the seconds tick by. Dry lips were begging to be licked, but he didn't feel right doing much of anything in the company of another. Not here, not now. I miss my element, he realised with a repressed sigh.
At least the guy seemed nice enough, apparently not realising that Joshua was from a rival element in the war as he turned to reply. Josh nodded slightly, relieved that he wasn't snapping and snarling. Again, not what the graduate was used to. A Fire elemental would have--stop it, you'll make yourself sick. Comparing the two completely different factions was just going to make it worse. "The plants... guide you?" It surprised him so much that the question slipped out before he could stop himself, immediately correcting with an, "Aha, I mean, uh, yeah, of course they do." Damn it, he was terribly flustered and he didn't usually get like this--he was so out of his element, and quite literally this time. He swallowed and cleared his throat a tad. "We're both at fault I guess," he said, deciding to compromise. "My apologies, regardless." If it had been a Fire elemental who'd stumbled over him Joshua Dale would have been glaring and sneering by now. It just didn't feel right doing that to an Earth kid. They were so... soft? Gentle? Not cold and cruel? Oh, he didn't know. It was early and he was mixed and messed up.
Though he tried to relax his muscles and appear nonchalant as the Earth elemental sat down beside him, Joshua's brain didn't seem to want to connect with his limbs at the moment. He was rigid as a board and actually found that he was getting nervous as he was spoken to again. He wasn't afraid--hell no, Josh didn't get scared of these guys--he was just uncomfortable. Incredibly. He tried to smile and appear normal, but the gesture ghosted across his lips for only a second before it was gone. "Oh, I'm fine," he said. It actually might have been a smart idea to take him up on the offer considering his lips were dry and he was going to develop a sore throat if he kept this up, but his pride and his awkwardness would not allow it, nosiree.
He did chuckle at the floor-kissing comment, but it didn't sound like the hearty laughter of someone who'd truly enjoyed a joke. It sounded like the laugh one would reward their in-laws with if they were trying to be polite but didn't really know how to go about doing so. It wasn't that he didn't find the remark amusing--if Nell had said it, the sound might have been more genuine--he was just unsure of how to react. "That's good," he said, simply to break the silence before it got too awkward and threatened to swallow him whole. He felt ridiculous getting this worked up over being in the Earth dormitories, but you've got to understand how strange this all was for him! He truly didn't understand how he was supposed to be behaving in this hollow of enemies. Or were they allies now that he'd switched sides? All this thinking was giving him a headache. He was an intelligent kid, but over-analysing was becoming a problem.
Caught in the act, he couldn't really deny the realisation of Sean about his element. He winced back slightly as an accusing finger was jabbed in his direction, not sure what he should say. "Uh, yeah," he admitted, slowly raising his hands with palms out in front of his chest, a mild gesture of what was probably surrender. He didn't want to cause a scene or scare everyone off. There had been a lot of problems with this lately, he didn't belong here and there were more reminders by the second. Even Nell had assumed he was planning an attack when he'd first run into her, and she was the entire reason he'd been forced to stay here. "I'm not going to attack you, I swear." Could one really trust the word of a Fire student? Well, he certainly wasn't acting very aggressive--poor guy had even tried his hand at kindness when Sean had nearly kissed the floor. "I'm... on your side. It's why I'm here, the, uh, the Fire kids kicked me out." Pausing and choosing his words with definite uncertainty was so unlike him, but this was the only way to handle the situation.
[I love waking up with muse o.o This post came so easily. Poor Josh has no clue how to respond xD]
