Headphones were a beautiful thing. The black earbuds were wedged into his ears as he sat in class, not even thinking to listen to whatever it was the teacher was babbling about. This was a daily routine for Adam Rizzo; he went to school and shirked actually paying attention in class. Some days he tuned in if he found it interesting but for the most part he preferred to listen to music or talk to people. Forever the chatter box. In all reality, Adam did not like people to know that he enjoyed learning. He liked most school subjects and did quite well in them, but knew that (being somewhat of a bully himself) being an academic person only landed you in the world of wedgies and swirlies. Adam was not about to have that. Couldn’t ruin his tough guy persona, now could he? English was definitely a favorite though. Eventually someone would find out, and he could only hope it was someone he trusted not to poke fun at the fact that he did not seem the type to dig into a book or enjoy writing. Zoned out, he nearly jumped when a pen thunked him in the forehead. Dark eyes drifted up from the book on his desk towards the teacher. She did not look pleased. “Would you please pay attention?” Adam scowled and scoffed before looking back down at his book. “What do you think I’m doing? I wouldn’t have my book open just because.” Actually, he did, and it worked. The teacher sighed and went back to her lesson. The bell rang, and he filed out of the classroom with the rest of the students.
Eager to avoid going home for a little while, Adam took a detour away from the sidewalk and out onto the Academy grounds. He was not sure what he was going to do yet—maybe make a climb up the cliffs and relax for a while, or see who else was lurking around that he could hang out with. Adam, despite his anger issues, was a social person and liked having others around him. As he neared the lake, he caught sight of a few people having a snowball fight. Not exactly yearning to join, the young Fire attempted to steer away from them and towards another point around the lake. Unfortunately for him the Water students that were present decided that they wanted him to join, whether he wanted to or not. Back partially turned, Adam was pelted in the back of the head by a chunk of snow. He tensed. “Hey, I can’t seem to find my snowball!” One of them called out. “I can’t seem to find it anywhere. D’you know where it is?” Adam’s nostrils flared, shoulders tense. One of the assailants’ buddies answered the question, as though it were an inside joke only they knew about. “I know where it is. It’s all over the back of his head. You’re such a dumbass.” The other boy laughed aloud; the Fire clenched his fists. “Oh, right! What a waste of a perfectly good snowball, too. Such a shame.” To some this may have been entirely harmless. Asher would have laughed it off and probably joined them in the fight, bright smile and all. Not Adam. His pride stung, and he did not like this feeling that he was being made fun of. Confident as he was, even someone like him had days where they were more sensitive than others.
Adam turned around sharply. His dark eyes were narrowed. “You wanna start something, dickface?” The boy challenged, walking over to them without hesitation. He did not mind fights, and was not afraid to initiate them if need be. In his mind this fight had been started by them. Adam did not back down from anything. One of the Water students crossed his arms. “What are you gonna do, kid? Kick snow at my feet?” Once he was up close and personal with the group of students, Adam realized that even though he was tall, he was not that tall. A couple of them were a good three inches or more over his head. Even so he stood his ground. “No, I’m gonna beat the shit outta you actually. And once I’m done making your face uglier than it already is, I’ll fuck you up some more.” He could feel the rage surging through his veins, nearly causing his vision to blur. He was starting to see red. Adam’s anger did not always make sense, but he didn’t care. If he was angry, he was angry. The others laughed. “I’d like to see you try. Maybe you’ll glare me to death.” Without any warning, Adam leaped at the taller Water student and began trying to make hits. A few of them landed. Seeing that the younger student was not completely helpless, one of the other Waters saw this as an opportunity and used the lake to their advantage (after the Fires melted the ice a while earlier). They shot a stream of water towards Adam, sending him reeling off of the other student. Stunned by the cold water, he did not have time to respond before the other kids started beating up on him from above.
[Coulda kept going--muse was like, whoa. XD but I figured I'd leave you an opening. Feel free to manipulate the NPC's however you wish my love~]

Skye really, genuinely tried not to get caught up in other people's petty little problems. Over the years that she had been at the Academy, however, this had proven to be a little bit of a problem, and a tougher task than it would have seemed at first. It wasn't like it was something she had gone in wanting to do, though, because she hadn't even anticipated drama aside from the usual. As it turned out, this was more or less impossible as a Thunder, allied with the Fires, who were honestly all too willing to jump down people's throats for Skye's liking most of the time. She wasn't as confrontational, honestly, had never been meant, she didn't think, for fighting, certainly not the physical kind... She also found arguments stupid, though, so of all things this was probably why she had few people she could label personal "enemies", not because there was a shortage of people she hated or those who hated her in turn. The problem was that Skye accepted most of this as just being a fact of life for an elemental, and it was so that when others rushed headfirst into something, she was usually the one hanging back. She didn't have any problems with it, though, and in a sense she was pretty sure that most Thunders were like that. They had never been the rash ones, she didn't think. Not all of them made actual good choices, though, but at least she could say with a little bit of certainty that they didn't generally start shit, for a lack of better words, quite so much as their... hot-tempered allies.
It had worked thus far, whatever Skye was doing. She was going to keep doing it. It was the principle she stuck by, and while she wouldn't say that she was inflexible with this, she generally found that it was better to keep her own opinion on things. Her own opinion was generally that it was unnecessary. It wasn't like the alliances were a system that she didn't understand, because that was always the way it was, and all in all she had to admit it -- on the whole she did find that she got along the best with her fellow Thunders and even most of the Fires, with a number of exceptions. Skye was just going to keep her head down and stay out of things that weren't even her business. Even then, passive as she might be (or at least appear), there were certain times when she couldn't help but be swayed one way or the other, and Skye wasn't going to deny it -- when she saw someone outnumbered, her instinct was to see what was going on and help them. Usually, she found, it was a number of the older Fires picking on the younger Earth and Water kids, and then... well, it was difficult, because there was little Skye could do in those situations to diffuse them when she was supposed to be on the Fires' side. Today was different, though -- as she approached she saw that the gang of kids, all beating on one, was one entirely of Waters. They were familiar-looking, too, and she was pretty sure she'd seen them before, in years past or something. It would make sense. Skye had been here for quite a while, after all, was one of the oldest students in the school now. The kids couldn't have been older than eleventh or twelfth grade, though -- except for maybe the one they were beating on, who (from what she could see through the whirlwind of fists that were coming his way) seemed at least a few years younger.
Niner, probably. She wondered what he'd done to piss off a bunch of Waters so badly, but she approached a few steps closer, relatively silent except for the crunch of the snow underneath her boots. The kids were unlikely to hear that anyway, though, being so preoccupied. The one smallest one, the one taking all the hits, looked familiar too, but not in the sense that she must have seen him when he was younger or something. What was it? For some reason it occurred to her that he was probably a Fire or a Thunder, but then again... Maybe that was only because these were Waters, she knew, who were beating all over him. For some reason the fact that he was a Fire or Thunder made her want to intervene, as if this were an obligation... It kind of was, in a way -- they were, after all, allies, if she was correct in her assumption, and wasn't that the point of an alliance, so that they could defend each other and all? Then again, what did Skye have to do with some punk kid in ninth grade who didn't even know what battles to pick? She watched him take a particularly nasty blow, though, and exhaled slowly -- watching the condensation from her breath as she did so -- before taking a few steps closer. She was far enough to maintain a safe distance for the time being, but close enough that she wouldn't appear scared -- which, quite honestly, she wasn't, because what could a couple of little idiots in high school do to Skye? It was winter. There was static all over the place. She was literally very much in her element. "Get off of him," she ordered, calm as anything, and maybe that was why people usually found her intimidating, but sometimes it came in handy. The kids momentarily froze to turn around and look at her, but on sight -- because she was a girl, because she was after all much shorter than all of them, because she just didn't look that strong? -- they seemed to shrug it off.
"Cute. But you seriously only have a few seconds to back off before things get pretty ugly out here." She probably wouldn't actually hurt them, not unless they were actually stupid enough to come at her or anything, but it wasn't like the threat wouldn't hold any water. Skye hung around Thunders and Fires all day, and the senior student ones, no less. She knew how to play this game.
(urgh i didn't end up manipulating them that much but if they stick around, we'll see what happens. also LOLOL thanks for the muse!)

Adam was not necessarily the type to admit when he had been bested. He would not toss in the towel or wave that white flag unless he knew for sure that it would hurt his pride less than losing would. Right now he fought back as best he could, throwing punches whenever he was given the opportunity. He managed to get himself up off of the ground enough to at least dodge being kicked in the sides relentlessly and make a few decent hits from his position on the cold, snowy ground. Adam wanted to use his fire, wanted to try and display what he possessed, but he was far too inexperienced to make any real attempt. His stamina would not hold out long enough to drive his assailants away. Of course, if it had not been for his temper none of this would have happened in the first place. They were Waters; they liked to pull pranks and rile people up for the hell of it. Unfortunately Adam had a fuse about an inch long and it took very little to set him off. Had he been a fellow Water, or even an Earth the snowball to the back of his head would have meant absolutely nothing. He might have joined in on their game. Too bad he took it as an insult and allowed his anger to get the better of him. It usually did. Everything was fair game to pissing off Adam. Such a curse. As soon as he had managed to get up and jump at one of the other Waters in attempt to display that he was not one to back down in a fight, a voice broke his train of thought. The boy beneath him sent a fist straight into his jaw, causing him to roll over into the snow. He held the side of his face for a second but the rage subdued the pain. His nostrils flared.
"It's not our fault he couldn't handle a snowball to the back of the head," One of them replied, crossing their arms and completely ignoring the fact that the ninth grade Fire even existed. Adam said nothing for the time being, trying to work out whether or not he should use this opportunity to get another hit in before they tried to cause any more problems. While he pondered on this he looked over the brunette that stood before them. The girl that halted the fight was definitely older, but of what alliance or element he was unsure. Maybe a Fire or a Thunder, considering the fact that she was protecting him. Perhaps a Wind since they were rather neutral to the alliances and all. Or maybe they knew nothing of who he was and was simply opposed to violence? Tch. Adam thrived off of fights and arguments, so this was nothing new to him. He did not really regret any of it. One of the other kids seemed to laugh off the fact that Skye even dared to make a threat, but one of the boys appeared to be nervous. "I'd like to see you even try." The first one replied, before the other tapped on his shoulder and whispered something in his ear. He blinked a few times before passing Skye a wry smile. "You know what? Yeah, sure. We'll back off. Maybe next time he won't get his thong in a wad over an innocent, stray snowball." Adam growled and pushed himself up into a standing position, still looking furious. "Innocent!? You fuckers did it on purpose!" He clenched his fists and growled, ready to make ready for another fight when they started to walk away in the other direction. "Pussies!" He called after them.
Once the group walked away, the young Fire turned his attention on Skye. There was a mixture of anger and gratitude, though the anger somewhat overtook any potential softness to his gaze. He would not say thank you, considering that required letting go of his pride. And the fact that all she had to do was walk up to them just to chase them off. "You know I could've handled those assholes by myself," He stated flatly, eyes narrowed. He was almost always wearing a scowl of sorts even if he was in a decent mood. Right now the anger was coursing hot beneath his skin. Skye just so happened to be the only one in front of him now. "What, didn't have anything else better to do than get in the middle of my fight?" Not that Adam was winning or anything, but still. He liked to think he would be able to eventually. Now I won't even get that chance. His lip twitched as he crossed his arms and assessed the Thunder graduate standing before him. He was still clueless as to her element and any fine details. "Apparently you have some sort of super-human Water student repellent or some shit, considering they turned around like little bitches with their tails tucked between their legs at the sight of you." And that enraged him more than anything else. How was this girl able to do what he couldn't? He couldn't understand it. He jumped them, tried to instigate a fight and he wound up on the ground. His pride was stinging majorly at this point. Adam locked his jaw and touched his face, flinching slightly from the touch. It was tender, and there would probably be a good sized bruise there later. Not to mention his jaw ached and his arms hurt from trying to fight the boys off.

Skye was no stranger to pig-headed people and the stupid things they said or did, not at all. These kids were really no different. She had met far too many obnoxious people in her life for her liking, and it came in all forms -- the obnoxious Fires and Thunders whom she had to get along with, the douchey Waters and occasional Earths who liked to bother her alliance, Winds who could fit into either of the two former categories, random people on the street who were just idiots. Then again, Skye was pretty quick to pass judgment on people, but this didn't mean that she normally found herself mistaken. Most of the time, people only proved her right. She didn't even bother saying anything in response to the one boy who kept talking, though she was kind of amused at this... bravado. She wasn't going to actually hurt the idiot, but there was no way he could know that, and judging by the shifty look on the other kid's expression, he definitely believed that she would or at least could. This seemed to be enough for him -- she just stood there, tilting her head only very slightly to the side as one of them whispered into the mouthy one's ear. Then he appeared confused and was quick to raise the white flag. She still didn't move, just watched as they walked away -- she sort of had half a mind to call something back after them, did have a slightly mean streak in which she liked to taunt people, but she ignored it. "Good idea," was all she said instead as they turned and left, once she was sure they weren't going to change their minds and come back.
Then she took a few steps closer to this kid she'd saved -- a kid actually a few inches taller than Skye, but the youth in his face told her that he was still definitely much younger, a kid who apparently had a very colourful vocabulary and not much control over his own temper. She would have bet good money on his being a Fire, but she wasn't about to go and say this aloud. "You were being destroyed," she said, not necessarily in a mean tone, but more of a completely genuine one. It was true. He'd managed to get in a couple of good hits, this she would admit, but they were all older, more experienced, stronger, bigger... and there were more of them. They'd probably still be beating on the kid if she hadn't stopped them. "And no, not really, just thought I'd do something nice. If you like though, I could call them back and let them do whatever they want to you, but I doubt you want that." She wouldn't really do it, but part of Skye was sort of miffed -- just sort of, she wasn't so attached to the situation as to take real offense -- that the stupid kid was being so ungrateful. That really was what she got for stopping a couple of brats from smashing his face in, wasn't it? It hadn't really been trouble, but she really didn't want to have to deal with this guy and his attitude. It felt like such a cop-out at this point to just walk away, though. "And no. Just a Senior. No Water student repellent needed." She didn't bother disclosing her element, either, but she knew that the fact that she was an experienced Thunder also probably played a part in those Waters' quick willingness to leave. "I'm guessing you're in high school? Fire?" There was no point in beating around the bush. Judging by the fact that he hadn't tried to use his element, she was also betting that he was a ninth grader, but she wasn't going to say this aloud. She could spare him a little bit of dignity -- it probably wouldn't do to say what was basically, around here, the equivalence of "I'm guessing you're pretty weak". At least, this was the way most people -- proud Fires, especially -- would probably take it.

Adam watched them walk away, the urge to chase after them and get his revenge rising up inside of him. He always had to prove he was right, that he had the upper hand, that he was tough. When he couldn't, he became angry and tended to lose control. Was he grateful to this older student for saving his ass? Adam didn't want to be but if not for her intervention the consequences could have been much more severe. He would not admit to any of this aloud, or thank her, because that meant admitting that he indeed needed help. Pride was a burden more often than not and yet he carried it with him like he would a trophy. Did pride often make one seem like an idiot? Maybe in Adam's case, it did. "Bein' destroyed?" Adam scoffed and rolled his dark eyes, eyebrows knit together in frustration. It did not take much to make him frustrated. It really didn't. "I actually was doing just fine, thank you very much. If I had had a few more minutes with them they all woulda been on the ground wondering what the fuck happened to 'em." And that, there, was a bold faced lie and even he knew it. Had she not come along he surely wouldn't have even been recognizable. He hated that the Waters managed to catch him off guard the way they did. They were opposing alliance! He did not like to be shown up by the likes of them. The only person on the other side he cared for was Annabel. She was always the exception. "Is that a threat? You voluntarily jump in and try to help and then try to call them back. Hardly sounds like a good Samaritan to me." In some weird roundabout way he acknowledged her help without directly saying it, though he did so with a scowl on his face.
No matter how much Adam wished that this fight had been in his favor, there was no hope of that. Would he go to the medical wing and get checked out? Probably not. Far too much pride. He did wince as he blinked, however, a tell-tale sign that he did feel the pain inflicted upon him by the Waters. He crossed his arms. "Oh ho, big bad senior. I guess that makes you the shit of the school huh?" It was harsh humor, really. More like an attempt to belittle her position to make himself feel better. He was just a ninth grader. Had no control over his powers. No stamina. Adam hated it. The curiosity got the better of him; obviously she was not someone to be fucked with, otherwise those Waters would not have backed down so willingly. Senior or not. "What element are you anyway? Obviously not an Earth because they wouldn't have acted like pussies at the sight of you." He looked indignant, looking her up and down with sincere assessment before allowing a smirk to cross his lips. "Fire, baby. Do you honestly think I could be anything else?" Such a cocky little bastard. He cocked an eyebrow but winced from the movement, though he did not allow his expression to change. Did he even realize that the reason this girl probably even took notice of his element was because of his serious need in an attitude adjustment and his insatiable temper? Probably not. He took great pride in his element. Adam tipped his chin upward. "So, I'm assuming your name isn't babe, or angel, or beautiful though they are pretty suiting. Mind filling in the blank?" Forever flirting. If he's not angry, he's throwing out complements to every pretty girl he sees. Maybe it was better this time around considering he should not be so insanely aggressive towards the person who saved him. A good shock or a punch to the face would have been warranted.

She could almost see it on his face, that desire to call them back and prove his own worth in a proper fight, but he somehow resisted -- maybe because he was too smart to do such a thing, maybe because of Skye's presence there now. Either way, she would have bet an arm and a leg that he was a Fire at this point. She knew Fires pretty well, too. In a way, they were all comically similar, which wasn't to say that she didn't like many of them just fine... maybe not all of them, though. "Right. Just biding your time, I'm guessing? Or waiting for your moment... or just letting them think they had the upper hand." Her tone wasn't even sarcastic, but the meaning was clear. Skye was no stranger to others thinking that they were some kind of superhuman, but she dealt with them in more or less the same way... and sometimes it worked out, but other times it didn't. It was hard to tell. Skye wasn't changing her ways just to fit somebody else's ego into her life, though. "No. Do you seriously think that I would use other people as a threat?" That sounded like just about the weakest, emptiest threat she would have ever heard in her life. "I'm no good Samaritan, but I'm not calling them back.." That was probably lucky for this kid, too, but she had better control than to say this aloud. Though she was pushing a little, she didn't want to actually make him angry or anything. That would have been hell to deal with. One lowly little newbie Fire she could handle, but they were by far the most cliquey, and the last thing she needed was all the Fires -- and probably many if not all the Thunders -- turning against her too.
She pretended not to notice his wincing. At least for now, there was no use in bringing that up. It would have been like kicking a puppy -- admittedly a very obnoxious, poorly-behaved puppy -- while it was down. He was down whether or not he knew it. "If you say so." Skye wasn't so easily-intimidated, though. Bad attitudes were pretty much nothing in the vicious world that was the Academy. "And what grade are you in?" She could have guessed that too, would have pegged him as a ninth or tenth grader at highest, but this was probably a little more rude than guessing at his element. Fires took pride in their element, after all, seemed to relish in it and love it -- as all the others did, but there was something about those damned Fires. However, there was nothing she could imagine to make ninth graders proud. "Thunder," she answered, pretty straight-up. "So I'd say that their leaving was pretty warranted, actually." From as arbitrary a position as she could manage, Fires and Thunders really were the most intimidating of them all. All the elements could be destructive in their own rights, she knew that, but there was sort of just... something about these two elements specifically. They destroyed things, broke things down. Lightning shocks were much rarer than rain, but (excluding monsoons and other such strong storms) generally more destructuve. "And no. I can honestly say that I never thought you could be anything else," she deadpanned.
Honestly, she would have settled for a what is your name?, or maybe more creatively what should I call you?, but apparently the kid was feeling... creative. She quirked an eyebrow at him. Yeah, though he was certainly much taller than she was, he couldn't have been more than fourteen or fifteen years old... and no matter how lonely Skye got, she had no intentions of flirting with barely-teenagers just to get her kicks, thanks. Gross. She wasn't really so lonely in the first place, though. "Skye," she said anyway, not bothering with more information than that. "And good try. What's your name?" Well, she could probably go ahead and return the favour, sort of, since he'd asked first. At least, she'd return the favour of asking for his name. He probably shouldn't expect her to come up with pet names or compliments or anything.

Adam retained his air of cockiness and arrogance, knocking his chin up a little bit as he looked at Skye. Who did this chick think she was anyway? Oh, right. The one that saved his scrawny ass from a worse beating than he was already being dealt. "All of the above, actually." He replied, lips tightened into a thin line. He did not like relying on people for anything. Never. He'd much rather suffer in silence than admit he could not handle something on his own. Would it be the death of him one day? Possibly. He never claimed it was the wisest thing to do, but he never particularly cared. He did what he wanted. Adam shrugged and passed her a look of contempt. "That's what it sounded like," He replied coldly. "Besides, I don't even know who the hell you are so how would I know what you would and wouldn't do? For all I know you're just here to try and pick a fight with me too." Because that's how it usually went. Not that it bothered him all too much; he liked to try and prove himself to be better than other people. Even if it was just a verbal fight Adam was constantly trying to gain the upper hand. It didn't always work out in his favor but those times weren't mentioned. A small exhale of relief did pass through his nostrils; at least she was not going to stoop so low as to let the kids come back and make another attempt. If she did, then there would be hell to pay. Adam would not let go of it that easily. "Probably in their best interest anyway," He crowed, looking proud as ever. "I know they would regret coming back around and trying to start shit with me."
Did he even realize how down and out he actually was? It was fortunate that Skye did not mention his injuries, otherwise his arrogance would have probably shot up a few notches just to try and prove himself to be more of a bad ass than he actually was. She seemed to act so nonchalant about her position as a senior; hell, if Adam had that type of superiority you could be sure he'd use it one way or another. Inwardly he growled. He hated to be asked what grade he was in. People always looked down on him, thinking he had no strength what-so-ever. He would show them. "Ninth grade," He admitted grudgingly, sounding almost like a whining child than a confident Fire. "But grade is only part of it anyway. I coulda beaten those bastards into the ground if they hadn't fuckin' doused me with water." The shock of the cold water on top of being caught off guard certainly did not help his situation any. Adam would blame it on everything but his own lack of strength though. He couldn't make a hit at himself. Adam eyed her up and down as though he could see the electricity encompassing her. "That would make sense then. That's a fucked up fight if you ask me. Just show up and they run away like little girls." In all actuality, he was envious that Skye had managed to scare them off. Adam had a horrible way of showing appreciation or displaying his awe of someone. In fact it usually came out as deep disdain or anger. His natural default. Perhaps a reason he was friendless? Or well, had very few people he could consider as such. He was somewhat like his brother, yet not.
The young Fire waggled his eyebrows, unaware that Skye was not really giving him a complement. His pride for his element was strong. "Good. I don't want to be labeled as anything else." Especially as an opposing element. Not that he could pull that one off safely. He was far from being a pacifistic Earth and did not exactly have the jovial, outgoing prankosity of the Waters. Annabel was the only one of the opposing element that he willingly put himself around, but that had to be a secret. Definitely for the best. He flashed her a smirk. "Skye, huh? 's a nice name. Suits you I think. Though I think the other three are still pretty adequate." The woman was a considerable amount older than he was and yet Adam still attempted to flirt with her. That would probably get him into serious trouble one day. "Thanks, I try." Adam blew on his fingernails and brushed them on his shirt to display his confidence. "I'm Adam, but you can call me whatever you want, baby." What could he say? He found Skye very attractive and was not afraid to show it. His ego would not even be hurt if she turned him down, simply because he knew that that was going to happen. Did not stop him though. Never did.

Skye would almost admire his confidence, if only he weren't so annoying about it. The atittude really was irritating, though... and why was she always stuck around these types of people? It was kind of amusing, at least, that kind of self-assurance that he'd had it all under control, but at the same time she had to seriously wonder how beaten up he really could have been at the end of it all. "Well, at least you have no shortage of confidence." She had been at the Academy for a very long time at this point. Fights weren't news at all anymore. She raised her eyebrows at what he said. Yeah... Skye definitely wasn't there to pick a fight with him, that much was for sure. Actually, she didn't know why she was there, period -- maybe just because she wouldn't have wanted to see some kid getting beaten up. It occurred to her that they would have probably gotten along famously if she were his age, too, but Skye had changed way too much in the past seven going on eight years. "You might be glad to hear that I'm not... or maybe you're not." She didn't know how his brain worked. She was assuming that he mainly operated in blind anger. "Probably would regret it," she admitted, though really she doubted that they would have much trouble with this kid at all. If anything, they'd regret coming back if they found her there. "They're Waters, though, they're fairly... resilient." Fires were too, she'd guess -- maybe in a different way, though.
He seemed pretty unhappy with being in Grade Nine, which made a ton of sense. They were sort of the underdogs after all -- at the bottom of most everyone in the hierarchy, and if this was kind of bad at any regular school, it was worse at the Academy. At best the kids at regular high schools got bigger and bigger each year, making it easy for them to bully the little niners. At the Academy, they became legitimately more powerful with each passing year, a combination of natural progression and of course the way classes were meant to shape up. Each year was more demanding and what-not. In a way she envied him for being so young -- at least, classes had been much easier back then. "I never said you couldn't," she said, even though she had been implying it from the second she stepped into his... fight, if it could even be called that. He'd definitely been getting ganged up on, but Skye couldn't tell whether or not he'd deserved it. In a way, he probably had. Then again, she didn't think any people really deserved to be beaten on when they were outnumbered and outsized. "Grade Nine's not so bad. Everyone started off there, anyway." She guessed that from Adam's perspective, though, it had been pretty unfair of them to actually use water on him. The kid probably couldn't have lit a match if he'd tried. She wasn't too familiar anymore with how well Fires could use their powers so early in the game, though. "I wasn't looking for a fight." I'm not you, was what she thought, but she didn't say this. "And I bet you'd love it if kids turned and ran at the sight of you." It was probably true. Skye wasn't sure how she felt about it, honestly -- in a way it was amusing and kind of nice when she didn't feel like dealing with people's bullshit, but at the same time she didn't think that people actually being frightened of her was necessarily a good thing.
She actually almost laughed out loud at the sight of him waggling his eyebrows, but she stopped herself at the smallest of smiles. She really didn't want to be the one feeding this kid's ego. It was probably much too big as it was. He really was the typical Fire. "Trust me, I'd never dream of it." There was a slim possibility that he could have been a Thunder too, she supposed, but then again... Thunders were a little quieter than that. Skye's kind would have probably been the type to walk away from it all but slowly plot the kids' demise. Was that worse? She couldn't tell. "I think it might just confuse people if I started going by any of the other three, so Skye's good." She wasn't sure it was worth any kind of flattery to stand there with a, what, fourteen-year-old hitting on her. "I'll stick to Adam." It wasn't even a question of whether or not she would have gone for anyone at this point (seriously though, she wouldn't, regardless of who it was at this point) but this kid was so seriously not on. "Are you really this overconfident or are you actually just bored?"

He was not about to admit it, but his confidence level was borderline narcissism at times. Adam knew that there were things he could not do or should not do, but still crowed about his skills and abilities. A mixture of being egotistical and stupidity, this one. It was a wonder anyone could put up with him for extended periods of time; possibly the reason he and Annabel got along so well was simply the fact that they were a lot alike in their confidence and ability to argue until their faces turned blue. This chick did not seem much that type. "It's a never ending fountain, baby. Confidence is better than being a whiny pussy about everything and not knowing what you want or what you can and cannot do." They might be considered decently wise words if they came from someone else, and possibly expressed in a less vulgar way. But that was Adam; no filters, no real thought to his words. He normally could care less how it made others feel. Even with his mother and brother there were times when he spoke his mind and the words were harsh and bitter. It all depended upon his mood. "I guess I can be glad for it, though I suppose I don't particularly care either way. You can do whatever the fuck you want." In all actuality he was relieved that she wouldn't go so far as to call his assailants back. On the outside he exhumed confidence and knew he was not a wimpy weakling who could not fully defend himself, but even so he was not stupid enough to say 'come back and beat my face in!' when he knew that they had managed to gain the upper hand the first time. Adam could be logical sometimes. "Resilient or not they better not show their fuckin' faces again." Which was a stupid threat considering they were on campus. He was just an angry kid.
Even if Skye had never outwardly made the statement that he couldn't handle himself, he always made the automatic assumption that people underestimated him. Probably because Asher did quite a bit, as did several of the older students. It was a bit of self-defense, he supposed. "Tch. The fact that you stopped my fight said enough." Not really; some people really did have a soft spot for other people whether they could care for themselves or not. Adam unfortunately didn't see things that way, or any way but his own. It was sometimes a lonely view. Adam shrugged. "Yeah. But that doesn't mean they give a fuck about that." It was always the same old thing, and it even went on in middle school. The upper classmen always said 'those annoying ninth graders' or whatever grade was annoying them at the time, forgetting that they were once of the same grade and probably equally annoying. Adam would probably do it too, when he reached eleventh or twelfth grade but currently his level bothered the hell out of him. This time he did smirk and let out a small, amused chuckle. "Who wouldn't love that? Helps me weed out the people who aren't worth being around." If they couldn't handle him, then they needed to go find somewhere else to be. Saved him the trouble for sure. He did not even realize that Skye was not all that impressed with him or his element; his confidence somewhat blinded him to the obvious. He thought he was the shit and to him that was all that really mattered. If someone else thought so or made not of it he soaked it up like a sponge but he gave himself enough of a boost to last him three lifetimes.
"That's a shame," Adam lamented with a heavy shrug. "But I guess I can handle calling you Skye then. I may slip up on occasion but it won't be on purpose." That was such a lie; it would certainly be on purpose. He wasn't even sure if he'd see her at any point after today but he never forgot a beautiful face. At least he could wink at her and say 'hey' in the hallways if they ever crossed paths again. Asshole Adam may be, but he was most certainly a social person as well. Could remember a face and a name, or one or the other. He flashed her a smile. "Suit yourself. Maybe one day you'll change your mind and come up with something else." Probably not but he simply could not resist flirting with her. Or any female for that matter. There were a few he had learned to avoid being overly complementary towards but the rest were fair game. Like Skye. Especially since she rolled with the punches and did not retaliate or lash out. Adam had to admire that. He laughed, his dark eyes sparkling. "It's not overconfidence. It's just flat out confidence. I don't think there's too much of it. Not at all." Then he thought about it for a moment before adding, "Though I guess I'm pretty bored too. So confidence and boredom mixed together is a bad thing huh?" He eyed her, raising his eyebrows.

She considered this for a moment. Was it any better? Skye was pretty sure that they were both equally annoying, at least when people took either of them way to the top. Then again, it was hard to say. She could probably be considered a little bit overly confident too, just... in lesser degrees, in different ways. Skye didn't need to tell other people that she was god's gift to man -- she liked who she was, and she was pretty sure that this was confidence enough. "Not when you take it to the point of arrogance," she decided, figuring that this was good enough an answer, but she knew that this would mean pretty much nothing to the kid. It never did. Skye was honestly way too used to telling people to cut shit like that out, and they never did. It was pretty much a given at this point. "Somehow I figured you wouldn't really care either way." Kids liked to front like that, and Skye... had long given up on trying to convince them that they did, or else they would never have these types of conversations in the first place in which these things came up. People almost always cared more than they let on. "Chances are you're going to see them again. The Academy's big but not that big." It was big in the sense that it was a huge castle, sure, but there weren't that many elementals to the point that Adam was actually likely never to see those kids again. "And what are you planning to do if they do show up?" Whatever he said (and she somehow figured that he was going to have an answer) she doubted that it would be an accurate prediction, unless it was "get beaten up again", but he wasn't likely to say that.
Okay, admittedly, Skye really didn't think that he could handle himself. By the looks of him and his willingness to dash into the situation, he'd probably won a fair amount of fights in his (short, very short) life, but he'd been failing pretty hard in this particular one, and it was the real reason she'd stepped in. Even idiots didn't deserve to be beaten too badly, and maybe this way he would save face. Nobody really knew for sure how the fight would have ended if she'd just ignored them... though they would probably be able to take a few good guesses, and those guesses were probably the same as Skye's had been. "It might not occur to you that some people actually do things just because they like to help people," she said anyway. It wasn't entirely true. Skye didn't really feel the need to help most people. People could help themselves, especially egotistical brats. "No, but you won't either," she stated as if it were fact, and it was as good as. The cycle always repeated itself. Part of it was that people were just selfish and liked to push other people around, and part of it was probably that they liked to give back all that they'd taken before. "Why bother pretending?" Skye didn't care too much for this whole power thing at this point, though she couldn't deny that she'd used it to her advantage before -- like just now, scaring off those Water kids. Mostly, though, she just wanted to be done with school and the Academy and all the bullshit that came with it. "I'm sure eventually you'd be very lonely... but it does kind of come in handy." It was probably true for her too, though maybe she wasn't as obnoxious about it. Anyone around her at this point was someone who knew her and accepted her well enough.
Seriously though, Skye didn't know the point of his lying to her when she could see through it like a sliding glass door... that had just been sprayed with glass cleaner or something. That was a seriously terrible simile and she kind of wanted to facepalm, but that would be horribly awkward considering he had no idea. Then again, to be fair, she kind of wanted to facepalm at his actions too. "As long as you try your best," she said, and maybe it sounded ridiculously skeptical, but there was no way she was going to believe a word that came out of his mouth at this point. Look at the kid, trying to be some kind of womanizer. "No, this is very unlikely." Were Skye in a better mood -- and maybe if the kid weren't like, a child or something -- she might have tacked on a few nicer words at the end. She was definitely not going to touch this with a ten-foot pole, though. That was just awful. "If you say so, but I'm pretty sure having too much of something is all subject to opinion, and for some reason mine is telling me that it's definitely too much," she pointed out, then paused a second, raised her eyebrows right back in return, and nodded. "In this case? I'd say it's a pretty bad thing."

Adam shrugged his shoulders and did not look perturbed by Skye’s comment in the least. The boy was not really bothered by much of anything, actually. Not when it came to himself. He was a confident and cocky kid and did not really care about other people’s opinions. Unless it was his mother. That was a different story entirely. “I can take it to whatever point I want to,” Adam replied, looking as haughty as ever. Such a child. He did not really like that this chick was calling his confidence arrogance, but whatever she wanted to think was out of his control. “Glad that you didn’t have any other expectations.” His brows were still furrowed together, looking frustrated as always. The kid was just one ball of grumpiness. Odd, considering he did have soft spots for people. They were just few and far between and they were not expressed on a daily basis. Like his mother, Asher, and Annabel.
“And even if I do then I’ll be sure to show them what I can do,” He said with nonchalance, as though he had the utmost power. Like people were going to cower in his presence, quake in his shadow. All of that good shit. He liked to be intimidating; it gave him some sense of strength, even if it was not physical. If a glare could make people back away, then excellent. Adam scoffed at her, as though affronted by her question. “Seriously? Babe, I have all of the Fires behind me. Even if I took them on again by myself there will come a time when they won’t come off so lucky.” The Fires were loyal, like a pack. If you messed with one, you messed with multiple. He liked to know that if someone fucked him up bad enough there would be a group of Fires asking who it was and what they could do to take care of the problem. It was not always the toughest route, but hey. Adam was not going to go out of his way to ask for help though. No. If they noticed he had been hurt and asks questions he would just point in the general direction. No whining and pleading on this end. “Really? I would’ve never thought. I guess because I’m not one of those people.” And he wasn’t. Adam was a bit of a selfish person and was not all that interested in putting himself into other people’s problems. He had enough of his own to worry about.
He ignored her comment about him not caring. He probably wouldn’t by the time he reached that point, but right now it was an annoyance. I’m not a fucking twelfth grader so I wouldn’t know any different. He argued in his head, for once keeping something to himself as opposed to stating it aloud. There was no pretending really; he was more or less just letting that drift away. He was not going to confirm nor deny that he would be just like the rest. “Tch. I’m not lonely. I’ve got plenty of people around me.” The young Fire argued hotly, eyes dark. He didn’t like being told he was going to end up friendless or without comrades simply because he was not some flowery Earth or jokester Water. “I don’t like having a bunch of close friends anyway.” Too many opportunities to get hurt.
Would Adam actually try his best? Nah. There was no need to. If he found someone attractive he was going to flatter, end of story. Nell was an exception but that was because of Annabel and he knew what Josh was capable of. “Whatever,” He flipped his hand to dismiss it. Skye was obviously disinterested in his flirting but that was not much of a deterrent.
“Oh really? So are you saying that your opinion is the only one that’s acceptable?” He raised an eyebrow and drew his lips into a really thin line, definitely not happy at the thought that she assumed her thoughts and opinions were of the highest caliber. That was annoying. Oddly enough he thought his opinions were also extremely important but he was not about to place himself under a microscope when he could do so to someone else. Saved him the trouble of bothering with his own personality and all of the little bits and pieces that he should probably be working on. “Well, I don’t really give a flying fuck if you think it’s a bad thing or not,” He pointed out. His shoulders were tense. “I’ve never been known to give a shit what others think about me. So you can just shove it.” At the word shove, the boy nearly spat at her. “So thanks for your opinion, but no thanks.” With that, Adam waved her off with a rough, almost clenched fist and wandered back up towards the Academy.
