There was a Chapters in Maple Hollow's mall, and Caitlyn knew it well. This was partly because she did, after all, occasionally need to buy books, but it was mostly because right across from it there was a music store, and she usually made a point to drop in whenever she was here at the mall just because it felt like the thing to do, and the manager of the store was really just lovely. There were of course music stores scattered around town, too, but it was always convenient to be able to pop in here as well when she was hanging around the mall. It was also nice that these two stores were located by one of the side entrances to the mall, and so once Cait had parked it was easy to just simply stroll in and make this her first stop. Today, this wasn't the case, or at least it shouldn't have been, for today she was here at the mall to meet Joshua. It was just the beginning of December, and it had been quite some time since they'd last spoken, a few weeks at the very least, considering there had been exams and all sorts of other things to deal with in November. Mercifully, however, it was now their break from school, which meant that there was ample opportunity to meet up and just... hang out, something that Caitlyn didn't always give herself time to do. Well, there was of course still these matters of their jobs and her volleyball practices (which weren't at school and therefore didn't stop just because she no longer had classes) and, she was sure, spending time with family when it got closer to Christmas, but compared to the school year, she had more than enough time to pass really doing nothing.
They'd planned to meet right in front of Chapters, as it was relatively easy to find and didn't involve much walking so long as they came in from the correct entrance, and it looked like Caitlyn had gotten there first. She didn't see Joshua anywhere, at least, and she hadn't received any texts or calls or anything of the sort, so she'd assume that he wasn't yet there. She hovered outside the bookstore for a few minutes, waiting (he wasn't late, really, it was just that she was still early), but then became distracted when, in the music store across, she saw a 50% OFF sign that caught her eye immediately. It was perhaps a tragic downfall of Cait's that she liked to buy things, despite not necessarily needing it or, really, having the money to do it all the time. Ah, well. There would be no harm in just going over to see what it was, and Joshua hadn't even arrived, so there was still time yet... She scurried into the other store, wanting to see what it was, and evidently the items on sale were sheet music books. There was an entire section just for the alto sax... Caitlyn glanced over her shoulder back at Chapters, saw that Josh wasn't there yet, and made a beeline for her section immediately. It couldn't hurt just to spend a few minutes looking, and she'd try to keep an eye on the bookstore across just in case he showed soon -- but of course, Caitlyn would inevitably forget to keep watch.
[ sorry if this isn't much to go on at all! maybe he could figure that she wound up in the music store, or see her in the window and go in searching? or if you don't like that just let me know and i can change it so that she sees him arrive and comes back out, haha. anything's fine! ]

As a hard worker himself, Joshua had not been at all offended when he'd been unable to talk to Caitlyn for a few weeks. They'd both been busy with exams and he had two jobs to work and so he'd figured she was going through much of the same stress load that he was and didn't find himself bothered by it. When winter break came, though, he figured there was no harm in getting in touch. It was the first time in what felt like a long time that they'd both had enough freedom to meet up. Chapters had seemed as good a place as any to hang out, especially to someone like Joshua who loved books as much as he did. Plus it was a part of the shopping mall and so they could always drift in and out of the different stores. He didn't see Caitlyn when he first arrived in front of the store, shrugging off his winter jacket as his gray eyes flicked around to all the different people. None of them his friend, unfortunately. He was right on time, though, and figured it was possible she could be running a tad late. That was fine by him. The roads were often bad in winter and people were not capable of teleportation. Being exactly on time was easier said than done. Even Joshua himself had likely been off by a few minutes. He was a patient guy, but after a few more minutes he wondered whether Caitlyn had already gone into Chapters, possibly to pass time. He wouldn't be offended, of course, he just wanted to meet up as soon as possible. Going over to a woman sitting on a bench, probably waiting for a friend or something, he asked her if she'd seen someone that looked like Cait, giving a brief description of his friend.
"Yeah, she went into that store over there." In a voice rasped by years of smoking, the woman responded and gestured to the music store across the way. Josh chuckled. Sounds like her. "Thanks." The Fire graduate crossed over and entered the music store, pausing just inside of it to look around and get his bearings. He knew it well enough but it looked like they'd changed the layout around. That was fine, he could deal with that. Deciding to just walk around until he bumped into Caitlyn, if it had even been her who'd come in here, he started off in a random direction. He was briefly distracted by a stunning guitar in the window display but pulled himself away and eventually found Cait by the sheet music. "Yo, Cait, finally found you." His greeting was friendly and his lips twitched into a smile that was brief but genuine. It was good to see her again after the several week break from one another's company. Hard-working people did not often have time. "Checking out some sax music, huh? Find anything interesting?" His curiosity suggested that he was not upset about the fact that she'd slipped away into another store rather than waiting where she'd said that she would. Joshua really wasn't bothered easily by things like that. Stupid things set off his anger and serious things bugged him. Not this. "So what store should we hit up first, d'you think?" He had a wallet full of cash and a good mood in place.

Caitlyn jumped a little bit when she heard someone's voice. It wasn't exactly every day that people decided to sneak up on her like that, after all. It turned out, however, that it was just Joshua, and she breathed a sigh of relief after she'd turned to see him properly, making sure to keep the sheet music in the corner of her eye just in case. (There was a lady with her arms full of music books already, who looked like she was probably eyeing that. Cait wouldn't consider herself a selfish person, but some things in life were just...special.) "Oh! Hey, Joshua," she greeted, smiling brightly. It had been a little while since she'd last seen him, considering both of their busy schedules. For Caitlyn, it was a little bit difficult to see friends in general. When she didn't have school she probably had homework, or a piano student tot each, and when it wasn't that there were volleyball practices (or games, less frequently for obvious reasons) or band rehearsals... or naturally, practicing on her own. That was a responsibility of hers much the way that homework was. "Were you waiting long? Sorry about that," she said, and she was genuinely apologetic too. Joshua didn't seem bothered by it, but Caitlyn liked to stick to plans once she'd made them, and she had arranged to meet him outside of Chapters after all.
She was a little bit relieved to see that he didn't seem angry or upset or anything. It didn't really do to get on her friends' bad sides when she so rarely had time to expend on little things like hanging out. Maybe it was sad that was considered a "little thing", however. It wasn't that she didn't enjoy it. Caitlyn pushed all of this aside to think instead about his question, though. She brightened up a little as the conversation turned to music, although it shouldn't have been very surprising considering they were standing in a music store. "Yeah, kind of! There's this thing of jazz... It looks a little hard, but fun," she answered, smiling as she picked up the book she'd been looking at earlier, flipping through the pages to show him. She wasn't sure if music (or more specifically, alto saxophone jazz solos) was anything Joshua was particularly knowledgeable about, of course, so there was the possibility that he didn't really have the same impression as she did. Already in her hands she had a number of other books as well, namely one of Disney songs for the piano (she'd thought somehow that she had all the Disney music there could be for her two instruments of preference, but apparently this wasn't the case). "Actually, there's a lot here, I think I'll have to be a little more candid than this." But she was horrible at saving money when unleashed onto a store like this, so that wasn't very likely to happen at all... It was either very fortunate or unfortunate that she probably couldn't afford all of these books anyway, fifty percent off or not. "Hm... That's totally up to you! I have a few things I need to get but I'm sure we'll wander by the right stores at some point. Did you need to go anywhere in particular?"

Despite being a Fire elemental with a bad temperament, Joshua was quite patient and tended to be tolerable of his friends up until a point. It was a good thing, too, for if his anger issues stretched into impatience as well he probably wouldn't have friends to be upset with. He tended to get upset over things that were more stupid than sensible. It wasn't like he didn't realise he was being a bit silly and unfair at times, his pride simply would not let him back down. But he wasn't bummed out about this and so he easily returned the smile and gave a single shake of his head. "Nah, I wasn't too held up. I just asked someone if they'd seen you around, was all." It was rather helpful that the other woman had been around to witness Caitlyn vanish into the music store, though, else Josh might have been waiting even longer. Even his patience had a limit and if he'd been led to think that he had been stood up he could not imagine that he'd have been very happy about it. Not happy at all. He blinked at the book of jazz, which looked a whole lot like other kinds of music but that still didn't make too much sense to him. He didn't play and so that was probably why. "Definitely looks a bit complicated, yeah," he agreed nonetheless. He could tell by all the notes that it was no 'Mary Had a Little Lamb' or anything beginner like that. Joshua liked challenges, though, and so he said, "Nothing wrong with complicated, though. Ups the satisfaction when you play it right the first time, yeah?" He thought so, anyway. It was why he always tried to find the more complicated guitar songs to play by ear. It was fun trying to work out all the styles and chords that were used. Like a puzzle.
Spotting the book of Disney piano that Cait was holding in her arms, he lightly tapped the front cover with a smile. "Now that I understand. Piano, right?" He knew a little bit about playing thanks to Patricia. He could even play the more complex songs so long as he had the sheet music to go along with it. No writing, was all, and no trying to learn by ear like he could with the guitar. He had a better grasp on the latter instrument. He'd never had to watch his spending like Caitlyn was advising herself aloud to do, except of course when he'd lived on his own and been cut off from the family wealth. He tried not to think about that time too much but he did recall that it had been a constant struggle. Luxury versus necessity had been a difficult lesson to learn. Hell, he clearly still hadn't learned it, for his spending habits were notorious as ever. "Hm. Well, it is almost Christmas," he pointed out with a sly sort of smile. "Could always treat you to a couple of the more expensive ones, spare your wallet and all." Joshua was a generous person when it came to his friends. The Christmas holidays were his favourite time of the year because he really liked to have an excuse to gift all of his friends things that they normally wouldn't accept from him during the year. Like Lark with the guitar he'd gotten her for her birthday, he did not hesitate to spend big, but he was also willing to get smaller things if he felt they would be more appreciated by the friend in question than something big and flashy. It was a matter of taste.
He thought about it and shrugged. "Nah, I didn't have too much of a plan," he assured her. He figured that he would just mill about and pick over what took his fancy. He was in an amiable, relaxed mood. It was always a good mood to be in. "Maybe we should actually go into Chapters? I could do with a couple new books to read." He was always up for some new reading material. Joshua was like a walking encyclopedia sometimes with all of the random facts and the like that he picked up from books and classes. He didn't get all annoying and spew these facts aloud, though. A lot of people didn't give a shit and it was more irritating than informative. Thankfully Josh understood that. He was quite tolerable in his intelligence. "How've you been lately, what've you been up to?" He was genuinely curious as he looked sideways at her. "Enjoying the holidays and all?" Enjoying wasn't a strong enough word for how Josh felt about Christmas but there was a possibility it was different for Caitlyn. Maybe not, though. He hoped not! He liked his friends to be in high spirits.

She smiled, glad to hear that he hadn't been too held off by her random disappearance into the music store. Even so, this was probably something that she shouldn't do in future. "That's good," she said anyway, though she couldn't help the, "But still, sorry!" that came out. She was apologetic by nature for those kinds of things, things she could control and help. It was her own fault this time, and there was no getting out of it, not that she would have wanted to for any reason. No, no. Caitlyn was perfectly alright with fessing up to her own mistakes. "Lucky that person was there though! Who was it, just a stranger?" she asked, turning around and craning her neck, but with all the people and such blocking her view of the outside there was no way she could have really seen anyone. She wasn't even sure who she was looking for anyway and so she turned her attention back to the music. "Nothing on beat," she commented, then left it at that and smiled. "That's right! There needs to be a challenge for you to get better." It was too easy to play through things she already knew inside and out. Luckily, Cait was well-disciplined when it came to her practice routines. She looked over at the book in question when Joshua tapped the cover, however, and brightened up. "Yes! You play piano?" she asked, a little bit impressed. For the most part, it was something kids started and never saw all the way through. She knew this from years of taking lessons and, now, a little bit less than a year of teaching them. Caitlyn liked when her friends showed interest in music, however.
Money wasn't an issue for Joshua, she knew. That sort of thing would have been difficult to miss. She also knew that he was a very nice guy, at least in Caitlyn's opinion (once she had given him a chance) and so it wasn't so much of a stretch that he would be pretty willing to buy something for a friend, particularly around Christmastime. Even so, she teetered, both metaphorically and literally on her feet. "No no, it's fine!" she said, shaking her head at him. She had to learn to manage money more responsibly! Her parents were more than willing to help out if or when rent and the like became an issue, but she was still trying to do this more or less independently, and that meant that the money she made from work was what she had to spend. Her face probably gave her away with the stack of six or seven books in her arms, however, and she ended up blushing as she amended, "Well...if it's a Christmas gift." She was already sifting through the books regardless of this, still trying to determine if she would be willing to leave anything behind. "Sure, we can definitely go into Chapters! I was thinking I could use a new notebook, actually... Some of the ones there are so pretty," she said, thinking of plain old notebooks from the dollar store. She liked things that looked nice...and this was probably why she lacked proper money management skills. "Let's go there and then we can just wander around, I figure." She smiled in response to his question. "I've been good! Just doing the usual I guess, but it's really nice not to have classes. The holidays are great... How are you doing lately?" It was better to cut herself off before she wound up going on.

He chuckled as Caitlyn tried to glance around as if to spot the stranger whose identity she did not know. "Yeah, I definitely didn't know her," he confirmed. Still, he was glad that she'd been hanging around else he might have lost track of his friend completely and that wouldn't have been very good. They didn't want a fight between them over her not showing up when they hardly found the time to talk as is. Both very dedicated to their lives and studies, they had to take what they could get. "I think I'd get bored of something if I got too good," he mused thoughtfully. He was good at chess and remained good at chess but that was a different game every time. Songs were a different story. Like levels in video games, they did not change. They were consistent and once you practised to perfection it lost its flavour in his opinion. He liked things that would force him to improve over time, to step up his game. That's why the man wanted to be a doctor, really. For the challenge and the satisfaction. Also to help people, of course, but that was not the only reason. "Only a little," he said, and this was him being honest rather than modest. "I mean I'm no Beethoven or anything like that but I'm not too bad if I've got the sheet music." He didn't think he could ever be a composer. The thought made him quail and that was saying something because it was hard to intimidate the Fire. "My mother taught me." She'd gotten sick of him lingering in the doorway and watching her play with that captivated expression and so she'd offered to let him sit down beside her and learn the ropes. It had brought them closer and it had given him a fun new talent to play around with. He did not play often but he enjoyed it when he did, at least.
He watched her with an expression of amusement as she struggled over his offer, wondering at the battle that was going on in her head. Would she be like Lark in her refusal? His Fire friend was very picky about accepting Josh's gifts, but then again, a lot of that probably had to do with the money he tended to spend on them. Like the very expensive guitar. Still, he'd convinced her to accept that in good grace. He didn't try to convince Caitlyn, though, merely waited. She amended her words and his lips twitched in further humour. "Even if it's just one," he said, wondering if it would be easier for her to accept if he didn't absolutely go out of his way. He would if someone let him but he was also willing to compromise. Gift-giving was incredibly easy when it came to his little sister, though. He could hand her something that cost the universe to obtain and she'd hug him, thank him, and then go off on her own to mess with it. No harm done. "Yeah they've got some quality stuff," he agreed. All of Joshua's notebooks had a very professional feel about them, nothing fancy but nothing cheap, either. He liked to come across as someone who took themselves seriously, even if he displayed this in small ways like the neatness of his desk or something. "Mmkay, sounds good." He picked up a set of guitar picks when he passed them in the store. One could never have too many picks. Once they'd paid for their stuff and crossed over into Chapters, Joshua pressed his lips together in thought before answering her question. "I've been pretty great, too. The holidays really are a good time of year. Exams went well so that's a relief. Did you do alright on yours?" Seeing as they were both hard working people he figured academics was a subject they could relate on pretty well. "Looking forward to Christmas and then the new year. Senior at last." His final year at the Academy would surely be a difficult one but Joshua was never the type to turn down a challenge.

She'd started hoarding music books quite a bit over the past couple of years. Before then, things had been pretty intense with piano lessons, considering she always had something or other to be practicing. Of course, that wasn't to say that she hadn't had her own things of interest to play, but it was different now that she no longer had actual obligations. For band, of course, she still had things to practice for her sax, but without anything to play really for piano, she'd developed a pretty bad habit of stocking up on whatever she wanted. It wasn't such a bad deal, though. Except for the fact that it made her pockets run on a little bit empty, it was kind of awesome. Admittedly, she had one or two whose spines she still hadn't even really cracked...which was a figure of speech, as those books didn't really have the same types of spines as an encyclopedia, for instance. Caitlyn just nodded easily at Joshua's words, though. That was true enough. "Definitely... Also bored if you push yourself too much, though, and you get frustrated," she commented lightly, because she'd done this before as well and she was sure that Joshua might have, only maybe not necessarily when it came to music. That was just what was on her mind. "I'd love to hear you sometime, though," she said, smiling, though she wasn't sure whether this would actually ever happen. Maybe Joshua had a piano! That did make sense, as she knew he had quite a bit of money, and if his mother had been the one to have taught him. "Do you play often anymore?" Many people learnt and then quickly decided it wasn't for them and gave it up, much as they would have anything else. That was fair enough.
Caitlyn blushed profusely. She didn't really mean to turn down offers rudely or anything, and definitely not from good friends, but at the same time, she had never wanted to be too dependent. It was perhaps the reason she insisted on paying rent herself, at least as long as she was at all able to, when it was pretty likely that her parents could have at least helped. If not that, she could also be living back at home... She did like home, but she had gotten very used to what she was doing now all the same. Joshua was offering this as a Christmas present, however. She hesitated another second before placing one of the books, one of the simpler jazz ones, back onto the shelf. "Would you mind if it's this one?" She smiled a little as she held up the book on the very top of the small stack she had now. "I think I can cover the rest." This would allow her a bit of spending money, too, for the rest of the day... With everything paid for by one of them or the other, and now a bag full of music books in one hand and her purse hanging lazily off of her other arm, she crossed into Chapters just on the other side. There was nobody hanging around here anymore, and she wondered where Joshua's inside tip as to where she'd been earlier was now. "Yeah, I think my Math exam could have gone a little better, but other than that it was good!" She'd done well enough in Math anyway, she thought, except for the two or three questions she'd blanked completely on. "Yeah, Christmas will be awesome! Do you have plans with the family or anything like that?" Cait smiled a little ruefully at the thought of his becoming a Senior now, however. "That's always an important year..." She remembered her final year of high school very well and could only imagine that college would be much, much worse. Hopefully she would be up for the challenge when it came... She was sure that Joshua was.

Joshua pushed himself to the limit in almost everything that he tried to do. He would wear himself down with how much he studied and practised and trained, then pull himself right back up and attend school in the mornings and work in the evenings. He was built to work hard, to strive for the best. It was his nature. A lot of people thought of his methods as crazy and dangerous but he figured someone who vanished from friendships from time to time in order to pay attention to her education would understand. Still, everyone had their limits. If he pushed as hard as possible and couldn't accomplish something, it upset him to no end. He remembered trying hard to be good at soccer and other team sports in childhood and how it had not worked out on any level. "Pushing too hard can be a problem but if you don't push hard enough, you'll fail. It's a catch-22, I guess." He chuckled and shook his head at the thought. Life was unfair with its little tricks sometimes. Nothing was easy but some things were not easy enough. "Really? I don't see why not." He was surprised when Caitlyn expressed an interest to play but not opposed to the idea. "I'm better at guitar but I wouldn't mind playing for you. I don't play too often but it's not been long enough to make me forget." All knowledge slipped away over time. The brain was a fascinating organ but even it was not perfect. It could not retain every single thing it learned and if something was left untended to, it would eventually wither and die out. He was terrified of losing his intelligence even if he would not admit this fear to anyone else and so he studied almost religiously, more than he slept. He liked that he was clever, that he had a natural gift for learning new things, and he didn't want that to fade away.
His friend indicated one of the books and he shook his head, returning the smile. "Not at all." He had no problems covering it while she paid for the rest and so he did so with a content expression, glad that he could do something for a friend. He liked to do things for other people. Many assumed at first glance that the stoic and often intimidating Fire was a bad guy but he wasn't, really, he was just a little rough around the edges at times and he looked scarier than he was in person. Six foot three and a scar on his face, he guessed he could see how some people made assumptions. "Ah, Math. The bane of many an existence." He said this with a partially dramatic air, mostly to emphasise the fact that he didn't usually talk like this, then smiled and shook his head. "I aced the Math exam but I was worried about the physical test. Turned out alright in the end, though." It usually did for him. Joshua was too dedicated to fail, really, it was more about how good he did rather than how bad he did. It had always been that way. His brother had grown up with the athleticism and the social circle where Josh had been the smart one, holed up in the back of the classroom with his nose in a book and an intense expression on his face. "Well Nell has work but I'm spending Christmas with my sister, maybe my parents as well if they're free. What about you?" He planned to spend time with Nell when she got home from work, though, and that was good enough for him. He loved her, he didn't care when he got to see her as long as he did. "Yeah, tell me about it," he said, raking a hand briefly through his hair. "Already took the MCAT's but I need to send in applications for medical school come fall and I hope I can manage to keep my grades up through all that." He was pretty confident that he'd manage but there was still the usual anxiety. This was his future.

She certainly hoped that it wasn't a guarantee that she would fail should she stop trying for any brief period at any time in the future, but at least in her opinion, it was true what Joshua said. She had always been taught to work hard and strive to succeed, and while her parents had been fairly flexible in that sense, it was... advice, or a value, that she had always maintained. She did have the issue of overworking, however, and it could be a serious problem when she got sick or anything like that because she'd neglected to take care of herself. It wasn't exactly as if she could simply take off a few days. There were things that needed doing, and life didn't stop just because she was sick... She hated being sick, however. Normally she did an alright job of making sure that she ate all three meals a day, got to bed as soon as she could, and so on, but it definitely wasn't always possible when she was constantly running around. "It's always worth it to find that balance somewhere," she said, smiling a little. "But I feel like life wouldn't even be complete at this point without having something to do." She got a sudden image of both of them meeting up again in the future, only they were old in this image and they were at bingo, not at the shopping mall... Neither would have much to do at that point but play games and the like, she supposed. The entire thing sounded horrible, but so did growing old in general. "Still, I'm sure you're great! Whenever there's a piano around then, since I think we'd just be kicked out of here if we tried to commandeer this one," she said, gesturing to the large grand piano in the corner of the store. There were a few people looking at it, but an employee hovered around there just to watch over it. It was a beautiful instrument, however.
"Thank you," she said, smiling appreciatively at Joshua, but she didn't press it much further than that, unsure of whether or not it would simply annoy him if she made too much a deal of it. It sort of was for Caitlyn, however. While she wasn't quite as fiercely independent as some she knew, those who wouldn't accept a thing at all, she didn't like to be reliant. She shoved this thought aside, however, bearing in mind that she would have to buy Joshua something later as well if she could. Though she was normally pretty good about holiday shopping, getting things for people as soon as she noticed them rather than waiting until the weeks before Christmas, she hadn't had anything call out at her. Wealthy as Joshua may be, with enough money to buy himself whatever his heart desired, she was sure, gifts were nice. "I just had a bad day, I think," she said, shaking her head a little. She was normally pretty good at Math, actually, but exams were always a stressful time. "That's good, though! Was the physical test difficult?" They normally were. "Oh, that's sad... At least you'll have time otherwise with her this break though, even if it's not actual Christmas day," she said. "Good that you'll have your sister and your parents, though! I'm probably heading back home... I miss my parents. And the twins." She had only just finished her Freshman year, and it was the first year she'd spent in her own apartment, having to pay rent and do things on her own. This was kind of baffling. The twins, of course, were her younger siblings, in all their tiny, blonde cuteness, though she was sure that since summer when she'd last seen them they would have managed to grow about two feet or something ridiculous like that. "You can," she told him with confidence. "How were the MCATs?"

Oh how he hated waking up on an exam day and feeling like his performance might be anything less than stellar. He was incredibly obsessive when it came to his marks because his ambition would not let it be any other way. He didn't want to fail, to flag, to let anything get in the way of his dreams. He was sure Cait of all people could understand him. "That's a pain," he sympathised. "Well, at least it didn't mess you up too bad, right?" Silver lining, silver lining. He wasn't too much of an optimist but he also wasn't the type to drag his friends into the dumps by talking about how much better they could have done. That was morbid and very unfair. "It was... well, it wasn't the hardest thing I've ever done by any means but being junior year and an advanced course... yeah, it's probably what most would call difficult." He wasn't going to try and play off modesty. He never tried for modesty when it came to academics, nor did he try to brag by pretending that everything was easy for him when it wasn't. If school was that easy to skate through, everyone would be doctors and lawyers because it paid so well. "It went... ah, it wasn't my best, but it was enough to keep from harming my grades. Thank god." If his GPA had taken a hit because of his physical testing he probably would have been a mess about it. There were no retakes of those exams. His high score on the MCAT would probably rescue his GPA even if it did suffer a drop but he would rather avoid taking any chances. "How did your elemental exams go?" Elemental exams were a requirement for an Academy major, no matter what that major was. Like core classes.
He smiled in order to insist that he wasn't too upset about not being able to spend all of Christmas day with Nell. It was a bit sad, sure, but it wasn't the end of the world. "Eh, I live with her, it's not too big a deal. I see her all the time." He hoped that didn't sound like she didn't matter because that was not the effect he'd been going to at all when it came to the way he'd worded that. "I can only imagine. Do you live too far from here?" He meant far from the Academy and unless you lived in Maple Hollow, well, most everything was 'too far'. It was the reason why a lot of students that didn't live in the Hollow were gone during the summer and winter break because they went to visit family and the like. Josh was lucky in that most of his relatives lived in Maple Hollow, at least the most important ones like his direct relatives and his fiancée, so he could see them often even during the school year. She asked about the MCAT exam and he twitched his lips into a smile. "Brilliant, actually. Not going to lie. I got a thirty-nine." Considering that was a very competitive score, he was proud of it. It was in the top percentile, proof that he wanted it more than anything else in the world. "On the downside, I swear to god I never want to see that test again." He laughed, shaking his head. "I'm glad I took it before I took on my job or I'd have never made it out alive." Never ever. He hoped that his really good score and GPA would give him a guarantee into UMH. It wasn't a top-tier school or anything so that meant he had a good chance (he hoped). He'd done so much for this, it would suck to have it all be for nothing.

That was true, Caitlyn supposed. The exam really hadn't been that bad, all things considered. She'd blanked completely on several questions, but that was... all sort of to be expected, at this point, when she was going through stressful periods. But she was sure that, as always, she was just overreacting. The few questions she'd left blank or scribbled down nonsense or guessed on would probably be outweighed by the things she'd done well, and she was sure that there were enough of those too. "No, it wasn't as bad as it could have been," she admitted, nodding. She was the type to get panicky over small things like that when she messed up on them, however, and she wasn't likely to settle until she was sure that it really had been balanced out and made alright in the end. "And that sounds hard," she added sympathetically, "but I guess it's the type of thing you have to get used to, going to an elemental college and everything." She lowed her voice for the last several words. Though nobody seemed to be listening in and she doubted they would think much of it even if they'd overheard, she never thought it was wise to go shouting about the Academy to the world. "Mine weren't bad! The hardest one was just... dealing really specifically with endurance, but it was last so it was a matter of not getting worn out in anything before that." She'd skipped all her volleyball practices for the week, she recalled. It was too much strain otherwise.
This did make sense, Caitlyn thought, but she didn't know anything about engagements or anything like that. She'd been in a relationship... fairly recently actually, and it had even been pretty serious in fact, but nothing like having a fiancé. This was something else entirely. Plus... Joshua and Nell were together, and Caitlyn and her ex were not anymore, precisely because he'd demanded so much of her time. She was kind of relieved for Nell, in a way, that Joshua didn't seem to be the type of clingy that required their being together all the time. Then again, much like Caitlyn herself, Joshua probably didn't have time for such things. "This is true! Did you get her anything for Christmas?" she asked, eyes almost glinting with mischief. She wanted to know these things! "Sort of, yeah," she answered with a bit of a wry smile, "Edmonton, actually. I have my apartment here now, though, but... we'll see what happens after college is over, I guess." She supposed that she might want to be closer to her parents again when the time came. Her family had never anticipated her having to go away for high school, after all, as they weren't elementals themselves, but after some time she'd grown accustomed to the mild independence, and now essentially full independence. She did love her parents and younger siblings, however, despite being used to staying so far away. Caitlyn smiled to hear that he had done well. It sounded sort of terrible, however, having to take that kind of intense test. "Lucky you did! And lucky that you really won't have to take it again. That's so good, though." Joshua was certainly very intelligent.

In the end, Josh supposed that putting up with elemental courses was worth it in order to stay in Maple Hollow and study his powers at the same time. "It's hard to think that I'll have to hide from everyone when I go off to UMH," he admitted. "I thought about going abroad for college and all but I decided to stick with the Academy because of my gift." Once you were pushed into the real world it became a hell of a lot harder to use your powers. There was no truly safe place to practice or talk about them unless you were in the company of your own home. The government made it really hard and the Academy was really the only safe zone. Tucked away in the mountains beside a town that no one but the residents really gave two shits about, it was safe. "Endurance really is tough," he sympathized. "I mean, I spent all of high school learning that Fire and Water don't mix and then all of college forcing them to." He laughed, shaking his head with a twitch of his lips at the thought. It definitely wasn't his favourite class since he was afraid of drowning and watching some of his classmates manipulate their water could get intimidating but the fact that he was on the right side of the alliance to be friendly toward them now probably helped. He knew that they were attacking him for class, for grades rather than out of a genuine desire to cause harm. "I imagine it's even tougher as a freshman, yeah? I took my first course in sophomore year when my stamina was a little more impressive." Plus he simply hadn't been able to fit a stamina course in with all of the others that he'd taken in his first two semesters. Geez, college was a rough time. He liked it, though, oddly enough.
He'd never had a relationship before Nell. He'd had plenty of, ahem, romantic partners, but nothing had gone on longer than a night or two. It was kind of nice to think that his first relationship had worked out so well. Was working out so well. The loyalty had always been there, it had just been a matter of waiting for the right person to come along. He nodded. "Oh, yeah, of course!" he exclaimed. He loved getting gifts for people and since she was his fiancée he definitely had no plan on holding off on that. "I got her a couple tickets to one of the operas she really likes. Shh, don't tell." He smiled, threw in a wink for good measure. He trusted Caitlyn not to say anything to Nell or he would not have bothered telling her what the 'something' was. "Not as flashy as last year but hopefully she still likes it." Nell did not demand any sort of gift, though, let alone 'the more expensive, the better' so he wasn't too concerned. Last year he'd gotten her a trip to Spain, a trip that he'd went on with her. It had been really fun. "Alberta? Damn, that is pretty far." He raised his eyebrows at the thought, impressed at the distance. It wasn't that far looking at a map but when one considered the driving distance, well, that's when things started to look serious. "Yeah, I was really happy with it," he said, sounding it as much as he'd felt it. "I was paranoid for ages after I took it but apparently I didn't have anything to worry about." Getting those results had shot his mood through the roof, he remembered, and then there had been a matter of trying not to brag about it. Picking up a book, he flipped through the pages and felt a breeze on his face. "Always did love the smell," he said, referring to that age-old new book smell.

Caitlyn honestly wasn't sure, some days, why she had chosen to attend the Academy for college as well. She could have gone elsewhere, she supposed, and in the end... really, her elemental powers weren't quite as important to her life as they might have been to others. It didn't have much to do with her main goal in life, at least. This may have had to do with the fact that nobody else in her family, as she was adopted, even had the gift. She'd grown up in a world without the need or even the existence of such things. "In my case... I think I just wanted to see it all the way through," she said, smiling a little. "Kind of weird though, I guess, that we put so much stock into it only to go off and become... anything else. Doctors and stuff." The doctor part was, obviously, referring to Joshua specifically, but of course elementals went onto all different walks of life, sharing nothing but a common high school and perhaps college. "No... that isn't fun at all. Earth and Fire, too," she said, smiling a little. Fire was so destructive in and of itself. It actually made plenty of sense then that the two elements wouldn't get along, one naturally of creators and the other destroyers. She nodded, however, at what he said. This was definitely true, without question. "Yeah... I think now that I probably should have waited at least until next year or something." There was much less structure to the college classes, however, compared to the high school ones. Nobody held their hands and told them what they had to learn when; it really was just an entire mix of things that they chose from whenever they wanted.
She had of course expected nothing less of Josh than that he would have gotten Nell something, but it was of course encouraging to hear his... enthusiasm, in a way, for it. She would have asked what the gift was, but it seemed that this would be unnecessary. "Hey, that's awesome! And my lips are sealed." She grinned. Nell was one lucky girl, and she deserved it. Cait knew how much she liked opera, how much she liked... everything, actually. That was the sort of wonderful thing about Nell, that she just liked everything and was so lovely in general. Joshua was one lucky guy, too. "What did you get her last year that was so flashy?" she asked. She was sure that she should have heard something about it, but she couldn't remember it now. Caitlyn could hardly remember what she had given or received last year, after all, so this was no real shock. "Yeah... luckily I'll just be driving to the airport and taking a plane, though," she said, laughing a little. While she wasn't a bad driver by any means, she certainly wouldn't want to drive quite that far all on her own, and she didn't expect her parents to come get her or anything like that. They were, however, paying for her flights as they always did. Her parents were quite well-off, actually, though they were by no means quite as wealthy as Joshua's family. "I usually worry about tests, too, but they almost always turn out okay," she replied with a quiet laugh. It was always the case. She glanced over cover after cover, not spotting anything she really wanted (or needed for the next year, either). This was normal, however. She didn't expect to find things she was looking for at first glance. But there was a corner at the back dedicated solely to journals and the like, and she wandered off in that direction, still keeping an ear out in case Joshua said anything. "It is pretty nice, isn't it? What do you have there?" she asked, leaning a little to the side to see the cover of the book in his hands. She giggled a little bit at the sight of Joshua feeling the breeze from the book, however, before spotting a fairly nice-looking journal on the top shelf. She stood on her tiptoes to get it and... still failed. Curse this (lack of) height of hers. "Do you mind grabbing that for me?" she asked, a sheepish grin on her face.

He nodded when she said that she'd wanted to see it all the way through. It did make sense, really. A lot of elementals got some kind of attachment to the Academy and it was hard to really say goodbye until you were forcefully ejected from it like a baby bird from the nest. Learn to fly. "I was going to go abroad but my family talked me out of it. Said that if I still felt like going to Harvard when it came time for graduate school that they wouldn't stop me." His lips twitched. A part of him wished he hadn't listened to them, that he'd tried to study in America rather than Canada, but then he realised that he would never have met Nell if he'd done that. Cheesy as it sounded, he was glad that he hadn't done anything that would have diverted him from meeting the girl who was now his fiancée. He was in love with her. "And the only reason I'm going to UMH for medical school, at least hopefully, is 'cause of Nell." He didn't sound irritated at all as he said it, merely stating a fact. Nell was the reason that he wasn't planning to disappear for eight years to get a top-quality education. He might not be able to get into Harvard, which had been his dream since he was like, eight years old or something, but he was sure that if he applied to all the Ivy Leagues and then the top schools in Canada as well that at least one of them would take him. He knew that he had a lot of confidence, but hey, he got a thirty-nine on the MCAT. That was pretty damn good. "Do they give you a lot of trouble? The Fires, I mean. Being in opposite alliances is tough." His only weakness elementally was Water and though he had once been opposed to them alliance-wise, they were on the same side now. It made it easier. "If you did well I don't see why it matters," he mused. "I mean, look at it this way: getting it out of the way now means you don't have to do it later!" She could focus on the harder classes of sophomore year without having to stress over how much stamina the endurance classes drained.
He grinned back at Caitlyn when she said that her lips were sealed, unable to help himself. It was amusing how giddy he could get over Nell, at least internally. He didn't squeal or jump up and down, he didn't babble incessantly about her in conversation, but anyone who brought up the girl in his presence could see the effect it had on him. "Oh, I got a couple tickets to Spain," he said, not having realised that Caitlyn was unaware of last year's gift. "We went over the summer and stayed with her great grandfather. It was really nice. Spain's a great place and all." He spoke semi-fluent Spanish now thanks to his fiancée's teachings and he had taught her French in return. It had been one of the many little things in their relationship that he cherished. "Well that's good, at least! Still, the airport's still a decent drive from here." He frowned in thought as he considered it. Maple Hollow really needed to get its own airport, he thought. It wasn't quite big enough for that yet, though, too remote for most people to care, and so the nearest was ages away. "I know, right? You spend weeks panicking over how well you're going to do, the days after it convinced you failed, and then you get the results back and it's fine. Happens to me all the time." He was naturally very panicky when it came to his academics. He wanted so badly to do well in school and so he stressed himself out trying to make that wish a reality. It worked, but at the cost of his mental health sometimes. The stress probably wasn't very good for him. "This? It's uh..." He flipped the book over so that he could read the cover. "Some sort of young adult fiction, nothing I'd actually read. I thought I recognised the title but nah." The book that he'd been looking for definitely wasn't young adult fiction. He didn't read fiction much. He preferred books about reality. He followed her gaze to the journal and smiled before reaching for it and handing it down to her. Being tall really was an asset, especially when he went grocery shopping with Nell or something. She was so short compared to him it was almost comical.
