He hadn't liked cigarettes at first. He remembered the first time he'd tried one and nearly hacked up a lung with the bout of coughing that had followed. Now, though, Bryce didn't think he'd be comfortable living without the pack of cigarettes he had tucked into his pocket, one between his lips as he snapped his fingers and watched it light. Taking a drag, he pulled the cigarette away from his lips and smirked. It was satisfying that he could do that now, that he no longer had to worry about setting the entire thing on fire by mistake. Still, it was a slow process. The cigarettes were more to calm him down than anything else. They didn't prevent the anger all the time but they stopped him from flipping out over anything and everything. His psychiatrist had told him to avoid self-medication, that he should take the pills prescribed to him, but he hated the damn side effects of those things so he avoided it. They made him feel hazy, weird. Drugged. The cigarettes felt good. He took another couple puffs from the smoke before tossing the half-finished stick on the ground and not bothering to stomp it out with his foot.
He was standing outside in front of his brother's mansion, debating whether or not he'd go inside. A part of him knew it was a bad, irrational idea. That part was very small. The rest of him was focusing on how much he hated Joshua and Nell, how much satisfaction it would give him to violate the safety of their personal space. Yeah, it sounded like a good plan. The security was pretty good on the place but it had its blind spots. Bryce knew about them from watching his brother sneak out when they were younger, from sneaking out himself. The only reason he'd never ratted his brother out to their parents was that Josh had an equal amount of dirt on him that he'd wanted to keep quiet. All of that was over now. Both adults. One of them successful, the other a reject. Bryce hated his brother for being everything he could be. It was good enough reason for him to break into the house. He'd came in from around the back, through the forest where there was no fence. Then he'd crept around to the front yard to survey the house. It was broad daylight but he knew they weren't home. He'd watched, saw them leave. Annabel wasn't with them. Maybe I'll visit my darling little sister. The thought was not a pleasant one. Bryce unlocked the door via the key, simple as that. Should have had the locks changed, asshole. He felt smug as he shut the door behind him.
Annabel's room was in the same place as always. She'd closed her door and he opened it without even trying to be subtle, knowing she'd figure it out in a few seconds regardless. She was lying on her bed and staring at the screen whilst playing video games, didn't look at him. "Didn't think you'd be back so soon. Did you guys have fun?" He wondered who she thought she was talking to and smirked. "I'm sure they're having loads of it, sis. Shame I couldn't join in." It was so satisfying to see her turn in surprise, give a start and immediately scramble into a sitting position, letting her headset fall around her neck and glaring. She really had grown. She'd still been a little kid when he'd seen her last. "What are you doing here? Josh and Nell aren't home, you shouldn't be in here." Bryce laughed, rolled his eyes. They were a dark, stormy shade of blue. It set him apart from his brother and he liked that. Difference. "If they were home I wouldn't be here, Belle. Use common sense." He tapped the side of his head, continued to smirk at her. The expression was almost feral. "Don't call me that." Bryce ignored her and slipped into the room, strode closer, which caused his sister to stand up and get on the defensive. "Leave," she said, her voice shaking ever so slightly. "Just... just go away, Bryce. I'll call the cops if you don't!" He chuckled under his breath. "I really wouldn't. I don't think our dear elder brother would appreciate it." He didn't explain what he meant by this and he hadn't, unfortunately for him, heard the door open downstairs.

Nell wasn't normally on her guard. She didn't like to live her life that way. It had once been a natural instinct, what she was forced into thinking so that she could live to the next day. But now that things were changing, she was constantly on alert, as if expecting a man in a powder blue tracksuit to jump out at her with every corner or alley she saw. Paranoia nestled into the corners of her mind, and so she was instantly poised for danger when she'd returned home after an evening out with Josh. The constant paranoia had her ears pricked up to listen for anything out of the ordinary even before she could kick off her shoes, and it was the strange sounds from upstairs that had her hairs standing on end. Something wasn't right, and she trusted her instincts enough to be assured that she wasn't just being ridiculous. This was a mansion after all, there was security, security that not just anyone could get past. That only meant worse, to her. It meant that the voice belonged to someone who knew what they were doing. Her eyes scanned every surface, the walls, the ceiling, the floor, like they could give her some kind of clue before she made her move. There was nothing else but what she could get from the level above her.
She carefully made her way up the steps, still listening to anything else out of the ordinary. Ah, crap. Nell blinked when she realized that she only had a little clue as to where she even was. The place needed one of those 'you are here' maps that they had in the mall. She instead let Annabel's voice guide her, and figured that the girl would be in her room, which she could at least be certain was on this floor. The problem was, which door? Door, door, door... Nell looked at them all, wondering what lied behind each one and hoping that she didn't bypass the one belonging to Annabel. She saw a door ajar, and came up to it, pushing it open with the palm of her hand. Her eyes widened when she saw that it wasn't just Annabel in there, playing with her video games. In the next instant her expression turned grim, jaw clenched before she opened her mouth to say anything. "What do you think you are doing, Bryce?" she said, her voice the audio version of an icebox. She did not suffer fools, and in coming in her, in her home, Bryce was certainly a fool. It did not matter that he was psychologically impaired, that he barely had control over himself.
Her arms crossed over her chest, it wasn't hard to tell that she was on the defensive. Territorial, like a reticulated python protecting her eggs. Her stare might not have been so fierce if it weren't for the fact Annabel was here. She didn't know if Bryce had ever tried to hurt the girl before, and she didn't care. He was here now, in her room which was something that she did not like whatsoever. The fact that Bryce was within such a short distance of his sister churned her stomach. Nell stepped to the side, showing him the door that she wanted to kick his ass through. "I thought you learned your lesson last time," she started again, voice smooth but fierce. "I'll give you three minutes to walk out of this house before I'm calling the police." Her voice left no room for any sort of argument or rebuttal. She didn't want to hear it. Her patience had its limits, and it came when dealing with Bryce. It practically disgusted her, seeing him in this room, in this house, like he could do such a thing after touching Josh. Did he think she played games? "And if you ever come here again, I will give you worse than the police. Am I clear?" There was no smiling, she was taking great efforts to not knee him in the groin at this point.

Annabel had backed into the wall by the time Nell opened the door and Bryce stood two feet from her, his expression smug and full of ill intent. Would he hurt her? Bryce did not even know himself. "I never paid you much attention, did I, sis? What a shame." He didn't know what was going through her mind as those blue eyes filled with fear narrowed at him, the girl trying to make her demeanour look tough. It was cute, really. Did she maybe think he was being a creep? No, Bryce wasn't like that. Incest wasn't his style. He liked making her afraid, though. Liked the power, the rush of adrenaline. Power always made him feel great. It was a high greater than drugs. A rush better than sex by all means. Not that he experienced a lot of the latter. His personality tended to drive people away too fast. Annabel seemed to fix on something behind him and in the next moment he heard the door open and turned to face Nell. "I'm visiting the house of my childhood, silly Nell," he said in a dangerously cheerful voice. It was falsely so, enough to be sinister. Ice splintered through the cheer and turned it to something frightening. "I wanted to spend time with my sister! Isn't that right, Annabel?" He didn't take his eyes entirely off Nell as he glanced quickly to said sister and then back. He didn't trust the Earth, not after the last time. "Leave me alone, Bryce." Her voice quavered in her throat. So weak.
By the way that Annabel seemed to keep looking between he and Nell, Bryce assumed she was thinking about running to her future sister-in-law. He was in the way, though, enough to make the move a risky one, and it satisfied him that she didn't try it. He probably would reach out and grab her just because he could. He did not want to let Nell win, after all. I have more power than I did the last time, Nell. Watch yourself. Did she know? He wondered if that was the case. It was her darling half-brother that Bryce had to thank for that power. A cooperation of fiends, a deadly friendship. "Lesson? I'm sorry, were you under the impression that you'd taught me anything?" Oh, Bryce knew what she meant. It sent a shiver down his spine to think of the vines that had wrapped so tightly around him, that had stopped him from doing what he'd so wanted to do in his psychotic episode. His memories were vague, but they were there. Funny. He didn't want Josh dead now, just wanted to scare him. Make him regret all the times he'd proved he was better. Bryce hated being second-best. The psychosis didn't listen to reason, though. There were times when he snapped. "Three minutes? Be fair, Nell, I only just arrived. You have impeccable timing, sister. Am I allowed to call you that?" Oh, he knew as well as Annabel did that Nell and Josh weren't married yet, he just figured it would bother her.
He liked being a pain in the ass.
Nell wasn't attacking and that was making him cocky, about as cocky and triumphant as he'd felt the moment he had heard the word police pass her lips. "I was hoping you'd mention them. The cops, I mean. I don't think Joshua would approve, Nell. Not at all." No, Bryce was positive that his brother would not want to go to jail. There weren't many people that would enjoy jail. Especially not people with so much going for them. He hated that Josh had a lot going for him. It bothered the Fire more than he could put into words. He'd like to see him behind bars, but... "So I guess you'll need to deal with me after all, won't you? I've never met an Earth that liked to play rough." There were daggers in his smile as he stepped away from Annabel and toward Nell for only a moment. Annabel took this as a good chance for escape and slipped around him, running toward Nell and hugging her tightly for a moment. "Nell, thank god," she breathed. "I thought..." Apparently she didn't know what she thought because she broke off and detached herself, content to stand beside Nell and look a lot less frightened. More wary. There was anger, too. She was defiant. "Where's my dear brother? I'd like to say hello. Give him my regards." Oh how he'd love to rub his threats in Joshua's face. "I'd like to stay a while, if that's alright." He knew it wouldn't be. It was why he said it. To get on her nerves.

Nell was not pleased with the scene before her, Bryce intimidating Annabel. When was the last time she'd been so angry? When she found out what Rafael was doing to Angela? When Jane left Lark in that room? Incidents of anger were so rare and isolated they were easy to pin down. The boy's tone only made to grate on her nerves. Visiting his childhood home. "Would you like me to show you the driveway? And my car? Then you can visit your childhood hospital." She tilted her head as if that should be the most wonderful prospect. Nell really had no desire to get his blood on Gwen's bumper, mind you, but the intent behind the threat was there. She was not just going to stand by. He was not a threat to her, no, he was a threat to her family. And he appeared to be underestimating her. He should have been more frightened, backed into a corner, not so fucking cheerful. When he regarded Annabel and she heard the girl's response, the anger was so frightening and intense she had to take a moment to collect herself before saying anything. "Do not even speak to her," she said, her voice like a hiss. One move, one glance in his sister's direction and Nell would be on him like a fly on horse shit. He was up against the completely wrong person right now. She couldn't even stop to think how lucky it was that she and Josh had come home when they did, before Bryce could do anything. She didn't want to think of what that anything might be, even if it was simply intimidation.
His next comment had her moving her jaw to keep calm. She couldn't work her mouth into that smile that kept her from exploding if it ever came to that point. Usually, that point was reserved for her father. Bryce had a special place in her heart now, a place she never liked to acknowledge she had. So, she wasn't going to mess around. She knew her limits and she wasn't going to allow this to continue so that she'd do something she'd regret. “I’m not in the mood for your game-playing shit.” When Nell got pissed off, she wasn’t fond of word play and insults, Bryce's cheerful demeanor and his cocky attitude. Why the hell was he so cocky? He understood what he was dealing with, an irate Nell and Josh when he came. She may not have been too much a threat, But Josh was something else entirely. Right now, she just wanted Bryce out, away from his sister. Her sister. And she didn't care what she'd have to do to get him away. "Fuck no," she replied flatly when he asked if he could call her sister. By the expression on his face, she knew that he understood that he was still playing his games. Nell would be happy to be a Dale, she wouldn't be happy to be considered a sibling of Bryce's. And she didn't care about cursing in front of him, even though it did bother her to do so in front of Annabel.
Her patience had a limit, and Bryce was finding it out now. The fact that she wasn't humoring any of this meant that he'd found the right buttons to push. "Why wouldn't he approve?" she asked when she really just wanted to wrap her hands around his neck. Nell was at least pretty sure that Josh wouldn't be complaining when his brother got arrested again. The bastard tried to kill him, after all, and right now he was standing in the room with his baby sister. Bryce was just going for everyone's berserk button, wasn't he? God, she hated his tone, the way he spoke so confidently. "I reiterate, Bryce, I am not playing with you. You are so far out of your league." She was a college graduate, this was her home, and she would not hesitate to use force against Bryce. She did it once before. And he had just started attending the Academy. He was also uncontrollable, but she let that slip her mind for the moment so she could be in control. When Bryce moved, Annabel came over and it was one of her bone-crushing hugs. She snaked and arm around her before moving her a little so Nell was closer to the interloper. "Oh, he'll be on his way, and I'm sure he'll be just thrilled to see you." Normally, there might have been a cold smile. But now there was only a flat look to her eyes. "I am more than willing to take this outside, so try me, Bryce, I dare you." This violence was a strange thing, but goddamn if she wasn't going to fight a bitch.

Bryce was actually a little impressed by Nell's comeback, if not as frightened as he should have been. Amusement glinted in the cold, dark blue eyes of the Fire elemental as he smiled at her. The smile was just as devoid of friendliness and warmth as his gaze and it was not hard to see. He'd never been good at covering up his intentions lately. People that knew his dark side knew that it didn't go away unless he was heavily, heavily medicated. He'd 'forgotten' to take his medication, conveniently so, and there was no hiding now. "Joshua said you were a nice girl, Nell. You don't seem all that sweet to me." Did he know that it was only because he was pushing her buttons and trying her patience? Of course he did. Bryce might not have had much control over himself but he wasn't completely stupid. He knew some things and one of those things was how to rub people the wrong way. He tried to do so, it gave him a thrill. "By all means, if you want to go to jail, Nell, I'll walk right alongside you. You can run me down and I'll be laughing in my grave." He wondered if Nell actually would. She didn't seem psychotic, didn't seem like him. Then again, maybe she did have that crazy streak. Maybe she would kill him, say 'fuck you' to the consequences. She couldn't call it defence unless he attacked her, right? Bryce knew a thing or two about the law because he'd been on its wrong end a few times. "I'll speak to Annabel all I want. She's my sister." Annabel just shook her head, a silent 'No I'm not' if there ever was one.
There it was, the question that he'd been waiting for. The sinister smirk played his lips for a moment as he gave a pause before answering. Bryce liked to think that the ball was in his court, that he had control at all times. He could keep her waiting if he wanted to. He didn't want to wait too long, though, he was excited for this, and so after several seconds he decided to give in and answer her question. "I hear my dear brother did something the police wouldn't be too fond of," he said softly, Annabel looking confused. She probably didn't know. Bryce knew that Nell did, though, and it was Nell he was concerned about. "If you want them to find out, then by all means..." He shrugged and spread his arms wide as if inviting Nell to call them or to do something that would offend him. He loved having power over his brother and Josh's family. He did not really consider them his family even if they were by blood and association. They had left him high and dry. His grandparents were the only decent ones of the lot. They'd tried to understand him. Tried. It hadn't worked but it was more effort than his brother had ever put forth. "And don't play dumb, Nell. I think you know what I mean. I wouldn't call my bluff unless you want me to make a few calls of my own." If she tried to test him then he might just use his weapon against her. He'd prefer to keep it safe a while longer but if necessary, he would strike.
"I'm no more out of my league than you are." She was an Earth. She might have been older than him by a year and she might have had a lot more training with her powers but he'd had some tutoring to stop him from exploding in a fiery rage over the other patients at the hospital. So he wasn't the strongest but still strong. "You're tiny, no offence. Do you really think you could take me?" He smirked. "You got lucky last time." He hated her for that. He was somewhat relieved that he hadn't followed through with murder and went to jail for the rest of his life but he hated Nell anyway for simply existing and for daring to best him in any way, shape, or form. Bryce hated being a loser. "Will he? Perfect." He couldn't wait to see the look on Joshua's face when the older elemental found out that Bryce was no longer completely powerless. Nell seemed pretty determined to fight him and Bryce found this quite funny. "Be careful, Nell," Annabel said worriedly, clearly not wanting the Earth to get hurt. She's scared. How cute. The thought was scathing. "Lead the way then, sister. I don't know what you think you can do to me." But he was willing to try and force her into testing him, giving him even more power. He thrived off it.

Bryce really did not stop talking. It was doing a good job at ruffling her. A girl who could sit unperturbed through anything, and here was her fiance’s brother, her future brother-in-law, digging underneath her steel fortress. ”Disappointed?” she asked scathingly. She didn’t care if he thought she was Satan incarnate, and she bet he knew this. What did he think of her? Nell didn’t spare time to wonder at that, because it was something else she had no concern over. Whether he hated or loved her, it did not matter. She wanted him out and away, and that’s what she focused on as she stood with her arms still crossed over her chest. ”Don’t underestimate me.” The lengths she was willing to go to protect people had no limits. She’d sacrifice anything, even the freedom she fought so hard to claim. She was overzealous about many things, and her love for others was one of them. She would destroy herself to make it better for someone else, it was as simple as that. It was something she never wanted to think about, the extent of it all. ”And this is my house, so I am in charge here.” It was Josh’s house, she knew that full well, but she was more than willing to mark her territory in the face of an interloper.
Her eyes moved to search his own, trying to find the bluff there. Her faith in Josh did not allow her to assume there may have been anything else he’d have done to get him in trouble with the police. The graduate’s thoughts went to one place. ”How did you find out about that?” she asked, careful. Especially because she didn’t want to say anything in front of Annabel. The girl didn’t know anything about it, and she didn’t want her to know about what her brother did. Without the details, it could only sound like a simple crime, and she refused to let Annabel see Josh in that kind of light because it just wasn’t true. If it ever came out, from Bryce’s mouth or some others, she’d be at the ready with the reasoning of it. ”If you think that because you know about it I’m going to let you do whatever you like, you’re dead wrong.” She stared him down with her dark brown gaze. It would be easy to mistake her for a Fire at this point, the anger rolling off her like a miasma. And for a moment, she thought of the real power she had over this situation. I could make it so that you disappear and no one ever hears from you again. It was startling, that kind of realization and the fact that she’d even think it. That was the kind of thing Jane lured her in with, the promise of power over enemies. Nell didn’t want to believe she had enemies, but now she knew.
These were fighting words, Nell was well aware of what she was getting into, the fact that she was wading waist deep in shit creek. Did she care at this point? More now than she had before, because clearly he knew more than he should. She wasn’t willing to reveal to him how much power he really did have. The shortness thing, definitely a sore spot, but not something that would have bothered her in another situation. But it was just Bryce stacking up the pile of shit she had reason to dislike him. Hate? She thought back to when he held a knife to Josh’s throat, and thought that yes, this must have been what hate felt like. ”Lucky? All right, I’d like to test that out.” Now the idea of Josh finding out that his brother knew what he did to Rafael made her stomach clench. He was stuck, now. If he called the police, Bryce could turn right around and rat Josh out, and Rafael would more than likely be beside him to spill the details. She forced the thoughts away. ”It’ll be fine, Annabel, just stay here, kay?” Nell ruffled the top of her head affectionately, a sign of comfort. She didn’t dare move her eyes from Bryce’s blue gaze. She didn’t trust him not to play dirty. He was already committing a crime by breaking and entering, after all. ”You have a lot of trouble with thinking, don’t you?” she shot back smoothly, and to prove her threat real, she led the way downstairs, out of the house, into the back yard. She turned abruptly without stopping and swung out hard to sucker punch him.

The blue eyes glinted. "I'm almost... impressed." He liked it when people bit back, when they tried to fight him. Confrontation was fun whether the other party wanted to be confronted or not but that did not mean that he enjoyed it all the exact same. He preferred a bit of a challenge. He liked wordplay and argument. Better yet, he liked people to argue when he knew (or thought he knew) he had the upper hand. He liked to see people talk tough only to have him crush their words. It was empowering in a way. "It's a bit late for that, seeing as I already have." She was an Earth elemental and a girl, a short one at that. What power could she have over him? Bryce was cocky and overconfident at the moment and so he did not feel the least bit threatened by her. In the beginning he had, when she was not restricted in her hate, but now he had a weapon of sorts. "That's too bad, Nell, because I'm not going to listen to you! Sorry." He didn't sound sorry in the least, mostly because he was not, and he was smirking as he spoke. He thought that the Earth elemental was a fool for continuing to push his buttons and he still didn't believe she was capable of murder. Underestimating. Oh, if Bryce had known what she'd done to her mother, what fun he'd have twisting those words around on her.
Nell definitely knew, then. Bryce stared back without blinking, allowing her to see and believe how serious he was in this situation. Bet you wish you hadn't been so cocky now, huh? The thought was smug. If she did anything too serious to him, both she and his brother would go down for it. It was enthralling to think of putting them both in jail for their separate crimes. He would revel in that thought as long as possible. "I have friends in helpful places." He raised his eyebrows and let this speak for itself. He did consider Rafael a friend. United in hatred. Bryce didn't have many people he could consider friends, mostly just people he would use for the sake of using them, but there were a couple of exceptions. Rafael hated Josh and Nell, Bryce hated Josh and Nell, it worked out quite nicely. "Wouldn't you like to know what Josh did, Annabel?" His voice was sugary sweet as he glanced at his sister. "It's not nice of them to lie to you, is it?" The girl looked torn and confused, glancing between Nell and Bryce for a moment. Loyalty won out and she fixed her gaze on Nell for a time before looking back at him. "I won't believe you." He smirked. It would be the truth. "What a shame." He considered telling her just to plant the seeds of doubt but he was more focused on Nell and decided against it after a brief pause. Maybe some other time he would.
He laughed. "Is that wise, Nell? Threatening me?" He wondered if she thought that he wouldn't do it, that he wouldn't call up his friend and start trouble for the both of them. But hey, it would be awfully convenient if he allowed Nell to mess with him. He'd try his best to defend himself and he'd probably succeed but if he didn't he could hold that over her head. It would be glorious. "Suit yourself. You're more foolish than you look." Annabel said something in Nell's defence but he wasn't paying his sister any mind by this point. He wiggled his fingers in a mocking wave goodbye as he followed Nell, fully intending to fight her like she wanted. He'd like to pin her against a wall or something inside the house but he figured if it came down to elemental powers he'd want to make sure he could fight back without setting the house on fire and trapping himself. He didn't care about his sister or Nell as much as he did his own hide. He was expecting her to try something and so he reacted when she turned around, jerking back to avoid the punch. The height difference made it a little difficult as well. A chihuahua challenging a Great Dane. Or a pitbull, vicious as Bryce could be. "You're cute," he mocked, making to shove her backward, a taunting ploy rather than a particularly vicious attack. Did she really think she stood a chance?
[Josh can come in whenever - just say the word xD]

Maybe if she wasn't considering Bryce a serious threat at this point, she would have rolled her eyes at his comment about underestimating her. But the fact that he bypassed security and came into Annabel's room made her take him very seriously. And that was why she didn't want to play with him. She had seen what he was capable of, what he was willing to do. Or maybe it wasn't willing, maybe his mind was so far gone that he did things that he didn't have control over. He didn't have control over his temper after all. "Pity," she said curtly, a frown to match his smirk. Her hands were on her hips now as she looked him up and down as if gauging to see what she could do about him. He was taller than her, bigger than her, and she knew that she couldn't fight. She didn't know how. She may have been physically fit, but fighting took skill and experience, and she didn't have either of those things. Bryce shouldn't know, though. Never reveal intentions to the enemy, that was a big no-no in any situation. She didn't even reveal her intentions to her allies. But she knew enough about confrontation to understand certain things, no matter how pacifistic she was. In knowing that this couldn't be solved by a simple discussion, she let that fly out the window. What would it take to make Bryce understand that he should go the fuck away?
Friends in high places? The lifting of his eyebrows helped things clicked together. She wasn't slow, and she knew that only one person other than she and Josh should know about this, because he was using it as his weapon. "Rafael?" she said, knowing she hit the nail on the head. Who else? Josh certainly wasn't sitting down and having tea with his younger brother, talking about shanking Rafael. The thought could have made her laugh if it was any more funny. "He's not in a very high place. I'm not surprised you'd make friends with shitheads like him." She could believe it. Douchebags had magnets that attracted other douchebags, right? That's why they roved together in packs. She may not have known a lot, but she knew that much. What did I tell you, her mind seethed when he spoke to his sister, though she managed to keep that locked in her head. She didn't waver when Annabel gazed at her, probably expecting an answer. I'm sorry, Annabel, her eyes seemed to say when they dare left Bryce for a moment. "Don't try and drag her into this, Bryce," she said when Annabel said that she wouldn't believe him. He was not going to get the poor girl wrapped up in all this. It was business between the three--and now four--of them, and she wasn't going to risk Annabel by making her a factor. He could get Josh arrested. Her stomach flopped again as if it was just giving up. This was panic now, panic that she wasn't in control anymore. She was a climber searching for footholds.
Her eyes were steely. Is this what Josh felt, when he got mad, when he made the decision to hurt her brother? Because she could definitely understand now that anger was taking the reigns and steering her in the wrong direction. "I don't make threats, I make promises," she told him, and it was true. She never said anything unless she planned to follow through. And she planned to follow through on this, which was not very wise for her, now was it? She didn't think of it when she took it outside, just like she promised and swung out at him. It was the first punch she'd ever thrown, and of course he managed to get out of the way. She couldn't react as he pushed her back, stumbling a bit and hating how weak and small she was. Nell didn't even think it'd have done much damage had it landed. Maybe to her. The sensible part of her was glad for the dodge, because it made her stop, think about what she was doing. She was giving him what he wanted. "I try," she said when he called her cute, her voice coming out a little breathless as her chest rose and fall. Not another second passed before she let vines whip out and wrap around his legs, jerking to let him drop to the ground. She'd never fought before, so this was all very new to her. "How's that for cute, brother?" she shot back to him.
[uh...any time so she doesn't get her ass beat?]

Bryce's laugh was cold like the winter winds outside as it passed his lips, his eyes glittering with that same ice. He hated Nell and Josh, more so than he hated a lot of people. He also hated his parents for giving up on him, for abandoning him, but he hated his brother for being the cause and he hated Nell for existing. Plain and simple. Nell was... in the way. He couldn't explain it better than that, not even to himself. He never tried to justify things, his feelings and actions. He let them happen, let the chips fall where they may. "That's not a very nice thing to say about family, Nell," he said in a condescending tone that was meant to mock disapproval. He was one to talk. Of course, Bryce knew that he hated his family and so that was a moot point. Hell, he could hardly consider them family any more. "Oh, I'm terrified. Just sense my fear." He was mocking her again as she told him about promises, clearly not impressed. Bryce was cocky but he felt that he had every reason to be. Nell didn't seem like a very tough-shit opponent. He turned out to be right when he could both dodge the punch easily and then shove his future sister-in-law back with a single movement. He laughed as he watched her stumble back, though he figured it would have been more satisfying if she'd tripped and fell. Oh well, he could fix that. And he had every plan to fix that before she wrapped vines around him and tripped him up. An angry snarl burst from his lips as he fell back on his ass, burning the vines with a swift movement and scrambling back up. "Fucking bitch!" Oh, he wasn't going to play around any more.
Gathering a large surge of energy fuelled from anger and adrenaline, the burst of fire came easily into the air. It reared back like a serpent and then he blasted it toward Nell... only to have it turn around just as abruptly and hit him in the face. "What the fuck do you think you're doing, Bryce?" Joshua's words were growled as he dropped the hand he'd lifted back to his side, expression livid. Annabel had been waiting at the door for him when he'd gone into the house and it had only taken a frantic and rushed explanation about Nell being in some kind of trouble with Bryce to take him out into the backyard. He'd witnessed Nell's attempt to punch Bryce and his retaliation before he was close enough to intervene but thankfully they'd avoided a serious confrontation. Bryce didn't play nice, he fought dirty. If this had been left for too long, it wouldn't have ended well. The knife was in his hand before Joshua was conscious he was gripping it, more for the sake of a security blanket than anything else. He liked to feel like he had some kind of protection, especially after the last time. Bryce, who had stumbled back and put his hands to his face by first reaction, now ignored the redness to his skin and sneered at his brother. "Might want to put that away, Joshy. Wouldn't want to have you stabbing anyone else, would we?" Joshua's attention immediately switched to Nell, his gray gaze sharp and full of wariness and surprise. How does he know? The communication was silent, no words needed for the two of them to speak. It was something he usually took the time to appreciate but right now he was too busy being angry.
Though Bryce had advised against it, Joshua did not put the knife away. He remembered the last time with the kitchen knife and the near-death experience, didn't want a repeat. He did not feel afraid of his brother. When Nell was threatened, there was no fear. Only a desire to protect her. His instincts kicked in fast and hard. "Are you alright?" She didn't seem hurt but he could not always trust first glances. If he'd done something to her before Joshua'd had a chance to intervene—the mere thought caused an infuriated tremble. "Get the fuck off our property or I'm calling the police." Our property, he'd said, cementing the fact that he was with Nell, loyal to Nell, everything that was his was also hers. The bond he had with Nell was thicker than his blood ties to Bryce by far. Unfortunately, his brother looked more pleased with this demand than he should have. Josh was wary and stuck close to his fiancée, not liking this in the least. "Are you going to force me, Joshy?" Ugh, Joshua always hated when his brother took on that snide and condescending tone. Like everyone else was below him, like he was on top of the world. He looked at Nell, clearly irritated and uncomfortable. How did he get in? He made a note to ask Nell for details when they weren't facing off in the backyard like they were now. "I'd really be careful what you wished for, dear brother. I mean, if you hurt me, you never know who that might upset." Bryce looked at Nell on these words and Joshua looked at her too, not understanding how cryptic Bryce was being and not liking it, either. He trusted Nell and didn't suspect her of telling him. Rafael? It seemed bizarre. Who the hell would hang around his brother?
[Nell's rage is so adorable I can't-- xD]

Family? Never had her expression been darker, like clouds had passed overhead. The tension was like a storm brewing between them. "The hypocrisy of that statement is almost painful," she said. He spoke of family? After what he did to Josh, after crossing too many lines for her to even think about reaching out a hand to declare a truce. She didn't believe in family loyalty, but for her own family. They were the people who hurt her parents, who turned their backs on her. She wanted to keep away from them, and so she chose her own family. Nell did not choose Rafael, the bastard son born of her father's cheating loins. And she sure as hell did not choose Bryce who had been delivered upon this house like a plague. "I don't give two shits whether you're afraid of me or not." Her mouth had a mind of its own right now, but she couldn't stop it. Let him be cocky. It didn't make a difference to her. He could be cocky all he liked while she wiped the floor with him, because in that heated moment, she believed that she could take him. The adrenaline under her skin told her so, the twisting in her stomach tricked her into overconfidence. Really, all she could do was little tricks with her powers, pulling him down like she did. She wanted to hurt him. This foreign sentiment should have terrified her for the incident with her mother, but she was too focused on Bryce at that point.
The fear didn't even hit her when he summoned his fire, the element that could turn her own to ash. She stepped back, not out of fear, but to prepare her defense in the face of what she knew was to come. Sorry, lawn, she thought as she held up her foot. But before she could form the wall, the flames ricocheted all on their own to hit Bryce. She stood still, breathing deep breaths as she stared at her opponent until she turned her head at the voice. "Josh..." She wished she wasn't as relieved as she was when she saw him. She wished that she could have more faith in her fighting skills, but the fire had sobered her and made her realize the complete truth of the situation. Even if she could best him elementally which would be a stretch, she was the physical equivalent of a slug, with fighting skills to match. So Josh's arrival was like breaking the surface after being submerged. Nell closed her eyes for a moment, taking another deep breath, before opening them to see the knife in Josh's hand. At Bryce's words, she looked to see his burnt face, the anger in him. The words made her fingers twitch before she curled them into fists. She met Josh’s gaze, her own plain and stark. Clear in it the fact that there was only one way for Bryce to have found out about it. Rafael had not gone to the police, and she wanted to pretend that it was his pride that prevented such a thing. It was simply the fact that Josh had given him a resource, and Nell didn't want him to know that. I'm so sorry.
She noticed that her body was trembling then, and not from the adrenaline, but from the kickback to reality, the fact that this had almost been her first fight and she had just about gotten her ass handed to her. If she had been brought down, then what? Bryce would have simply won. "I'm okay," she said, and then as if to reassure herself, she added, "I'm fine." He hadn't injured her, just managed to rile her up with mere words. She felt ashamed now that she had come to her senses, letting Bryce get to her like that. But then she felt of Annabel, the fact that this was her family's house, and she was that spitting python again. Nell bit her lip at the mention of the police, even though her heart gave a noticeable jump at the word 'our'. It couldn't work that way, the law wasn't their friend anymore. She turned a glare on Bryce when he got cocky again, and she knew that he had every right to be condescending. He won, in every way. With both gazes on her, Nell's expression turned flat and emotionless. "Rafael and Bryce are buddies." Even though she looked at Bryce, it was obvious she was speaking to Josh. "And Raf likes to talk." Nell looked at her fiance then, lips curving into a frown. Josh was far from happy as is, she could only imagine how he was feeling about this development. "Don't call the police. Raf will find out...and..." She left the last part unspoken, because it was obvious what would be happening to Josh.

It bothered him to see the trembling in her limbs and know that his brother, his flesh and blood was the cause for it. Nell is more like family than Bryce has ever been. Family loyalty had always been rather important to Joshua. He'd forgiven his father's countless faults, he was close with his mother, and his protective streak over Annabel could not get any more prominent. Bryce? He had severed those ties the moment he'd tried to kill him. There were certain things you could not bounce back from in any type of relationship and violence of that kind was one of those things. He stepped closer to Nell and put an arm around her waist, for her comfort as well as his own. His gray eyes were blazing with anger as he turned his gaze to Bryce. You shouldn't be here. Joshua had always felt safe at home. Always. It was like the mansion was an impenetrable fortress, a military base deep underground that no one but the residents could access. Apparently he'd been wrong to feel that safe. "I'm sorry about my brother," he said coldly. "He should have learned to stay away after the first time." Joshua had not been much help in fending Bryce off the last time he'd been here but he was sure Nell knew what he meant. The police had been called and Bryce had been arrested, the couple going back to their day after the threat of his brother was eliminated. But it had been a rather uncomfortable day, really, because there were certain things that could shake a person up. Near-death experiences were one of those things.
He could not explain the chill that ran down his spine when his doubtful suspicions were concerned. Rafael and Bryce alone were bad enough, but together? It was not something he had ever wanted to hear about. She probably felt him tense, being so close, and alarm flashed like lightning through his eyes. "Ah." He hated seeing the satisfaction in Bryce's eyes. He looked incredibly pleased with himself, the cat that ate the canary. What a fucked up friendship that is. Should have known. His brother had always fallen in with the wrong crowds, even when they were kids. This was not just the wrong crowd, though, this was Rafael. He deserved to be in a league all of his very own. Nell warned him away from calling the police and Joshua's expression was grim with understanding. If he called the cops Bryce might end up going to jail, sure, but he'd get out in the blink of an eye. Josh would lose years of his life if Rafael reported him. "Fine, no cops," he agreed, shaking his head. He looked irritated. He hated being backed into a corner like this. First Rafael held power over him, now Bryce? It gave him a headache to consider it. I don't want to go to jail. There was the fear again, coiling around his lungs like a serpent and squeezing until he found it hard to breathe. He tried not to show the fear, didn't want to give his brother the satisfaction, but he felt that Nell would know how he was feeling without his needing to say a word. They'd discussed this when he'd first let himself slip and stab Rafael in the first place, she knew his standing.
It was like a bad movie as they stood there facing one another, neither side giving too much ground. Nell and Joshua had the upper hand in a fight but Bryce had a trump card that could undo almost any move they might make. It was a tough situation. "How did you get in?" He asked Bryce instead of Nell, wondering whether he'd give a straight answer. "Through the front door." Joshua opened his mouth to call bullshit on this, picking the lock would set off one of the many security systems, but then Bryce fished a key from his pocket and held it up. "Change your locks, bro." Joshua shifted his jaw and looked upset with himself, sending an apologetic glance toward Nell. When he'd had his own place in terms of the apartment he'd never had to change the locks because the building owners did that for everyone. He'd forgotten about that necessity—well, not so much forgotten as overlooked its importance. What had he cared about blocking his parents and sister out? He'd thought they were the only ones with keys, had completely forgotten about his asshole of a little brother. "Yeah, we'll do that," he said sharply, and he would. Bryce wouldn't be getting in again. "Now will you get the fuck out?" He wanted Bryce off their property. He was not entirely sure how he would go about accomplishing this goal without doing something to provoke Bryce. He seemed to understand this, lips curling into a sneer. "And what are you two planning to do if I don't?" Joshua looked at Nell, blinked. Fuck. What do we do? Maybe they could think of... something?

Nell let herself feel safe when Josh put his arm around her, even though it was an illusion. At least she was no longer staring down the beast alone. She'd never realized how exhausting anger was until that moment as the energy fled and she could honestly say that she did not envy Josh's temper. Nell listened to his cold words, exhaling and looking away for a moment. Things were different now, that was for sure. It was no longer the two of them with the upper hand, it was Bryce and the information that he shouldn't have. And having the two in such close proximity with each other set her nerves on edge. This wasn't okay in any way, shape, or form. She bit her lip when she felt her fiance bristle with the information, knowing what must have been going through his head. Our brothers are wonderful, aren't they, she thought with fatigued sarcasm. Nell wished they could have called the cop. For once, they were on her side. She could use the law as a threat without fear of being found out to be an intruder in the country. Now looking at Bryce, it was obvious whose side the law would be on. Even if she told the cops everything that Rafael was, that he hurt his girlfriend, that he probably had more crimes on his rap than Josh, who could say that would even work? Who could say that would make them safe again? It wouldn't, because the police didn't much care for the back and forth snitching game. That was too much bullshit for them to put up with.
She hadn't asked Bryce this very important question before, and mentally backhanded herself. She was far too busy with seething at him, forgetting that there should have been no way that he could get past security. But the key answered every questioned, and she met Josh's gaze with a small twitch of her lips. She didn't blame him, who would have guessed that the boy would have tried something like this again? No one could have predicted that Rafael and Bryce would have even crossed paths, let alone swapped stories. The Earth girl was at least pretty certain that Josh telling Bryce to leave would be ineffective. The cockiness was for a reason, a very good reason, and Nell wished that she could have preventing the two boys from ever meeting. There was no way to turn back time, though, no way to even think that the two knew each other. She met Josh's eyes with a similar expression before looking back to Bryce and saying, "There's no reason for you to stay. What do you even want here?" Her voice was calm, as was the rest of her, and so it was obvious she wouldn't lunge for him anymore. She'd learned her lesson. Nell had let her anger get away with her, and she didn't want to think about the consequences that could have been had should she have actually fought Bryce. It was obvious that he would have won.

Joshua hated that his brother had power over him. He had always hated it when they were kids as well and his parents had taken Bryce's word over his. He was the younger one, Josh was the big brother, and in their eyes it was like that meant that all problems caused had been Joshua's fault. It had not been until Bryce had finally snapped and came at him with a knife that they'd realised how far gone their younger son was. There had been no apologies. Now he was standing and seeing that same smug expression on his brother's face that Bryce had wore whenever Donovan would punish Josh for their arguments or when Patricia would ground him for the week and coddle his 'crying' brother. I hate you. I hate you so much. It was real hate, the kind of loathing that he'd never thought he would feel against a family member. Ever. "What if that is what I want?" Joshua narrowed his eyes as he tried to understand what Bryce was getting at. Then his brother quickly clarified with, "What if I want to... stick around a while?" His grin was like that of the Chesire cat, sneaky and sly. Joshua's gray eyes widened for a moment in shock before anger blazed through them. "No," he said immediately, and his voice was rough with the anger that he could not contain. He could never cope with the rage and the way that it drained his energy and made him feel hollow. The drain hadn't hit yet, though, he could go on for a while yet. "Absolutely fucking not. Not in our house. No." He looked at Nell and the alarm, the sheer abhorrence of the idea was as plain as day.
He hated the triumph. Knew what it meant. "What if you don't have a choice?" There it was, the threat. Joshua had known even when the insistence had left his mouth that his brother was going to counter with his trump card. He loved this, holding something over their heads in such a spectacular way. I bet that's why he's here. "You don't need to stay here, Bryce. Just go." He wanted to punctuate the sentence with curses and threats but he knew it was not in his better interest. The struggle was evident on his face as he worked his jaw, anger smouldering like embers in his colourless eyes. "Would you let me stay, Nelly?" Bryce was using that innocent, mocking tone again and Joshua practically snarled on the words, "Don't call her that." His voice was low with warning and he wanted to step forward and wrap his hands around Bryce's throat. Clock him across the jaw. Burn him to a crisp. It bothered him more than he could put into words that he could not do any of this without worrying about Bryce reporting him and Rafael reporting him. Bryce was insane, Josh might be able to play those cards in his own defence by saying it was self-defence, since he knew Bryce would certainly hit back, but it was a lot harder when his brother had another weapon. Plan B, B for back-up. He flipped the knife shut and pocketed it so he wouldn't be tempted. "Well, Nell, what do you say?" Josh could tell Bryce was using her name regularly more to mock his brother than to avoid offending him.
The idea still bothered Josh, as did the fact that if they tried to turn him away he might take that a little too far and run with it. Josh knew that the Statute of Limitations in British Columbia would not protect him for some time yet. It would need to have been two years before he could pull the rug out from Rafael and claim the stabbing to be null and void. The law couldn't touch him any more then. Two years was a long time to wait, unfortunately. Two years was not now. "Annabel is here, Bryce. I don't want you near her or Nell." He didn't care so much about himself, wasn't worried about Bryce hurting him as he was about the girls. Not because they were girls but because they were his family. "I don't care about your bitch of a fiancée," Bryce said with a smile on his face, and even though he knew the insult was meant to offend, the reaction was immediate. Joshua slid his arm back and stepped forward with obvious aggressive intent, Bryce stepping back with an infuriating, "Careful, Joshy! Wouldn't want to hurt anyone, no?" The anger was making him shake and he looked at Nell, said one of the more reckless things he'd ever let slip. "Nell, I don't give a shit about what he can do. If you don't want—if you want him gone, he goes." Joshua felt like he could handle it but Nell? He didn't want to compromise her safety. Or Annabel's, though she was likely safer since Bryce didn't have anything against her. He'd never hurt her even when they were kids. "Would you do that, Nelly? I go or he does, what a choice." Joshua glared at him and really, really wished that murder was not illegal.

Nell did not like what came out Bryce's mouth in response to her question. It was made even clearer when he elaborated on that, adding a grin for good measure. Her heart must have stopped in its usual rhythm before picking back up at Josh's adamant refusal at this. He voiced his opinion much more clearly than she could hers, but it was obvious that she was unanimous in that. Nell looked at him, before turning to Bryce and asking him, "Are the dorms not treating you well?" Would he really go this far just to annoy his brother? Or worse? What did he even have planned now that he could play this game like a pro? There were too many questions, and that made her feel less than safe. But she was trying to focus now, to come up with anything that might get them out of this situation. It was obvious that wouldn't be possible. It was called a dillemma for a reason, there was no way to get out of it, no way to back away from the situation. No amount of clever thinking could change Bryce's winning hand.
No choice. That's what this all came down to, Bryce cornering them so that they had no way out. But Josh still stayed strong, and Nell wished it was worth something. Because the younger boy was right. What could they do to stop him? He turned the question on her and she folded her arms across her chest. Before she could even say anything, however, there was an immediate rebuke from Josh about the pet name. It was clear that Bryce said it with the intent to annoy them, just like Jane in her methods. Unless she became deathly serious, it was Nelly to her and she did not enjoy Bryce calling her that, especially with that expression of triumph. Nell didn't see Josh get rid of the knife, as focused in her staring as she was at Bryce. The classic Fuentes stare, dead as a shark's gaze. "I say you need new hobbies," she deadpanned, and she should not be invoking someone with issues like his, but was he really only doing this to piss them off? Did he enjoy being an unwelcome guest? It most likely gave him some sick satisfaction in knowing neither of them wanted him around.
Nell was as sure as she could be on the answer. On one hand, her fiance gets locked up for five or six years of his life. On the other, Bryce stayed and did whatever he wanted to do. And after he went for Josh, Nell could be sure that he did not have the best intentions. And what about Annabel? She should not have to deal with someone like him. Josh made that point, and she had to agree, even though the other option was not much better. They both sucked. She gave no reaction at being called a bitch, but Josh certainly gave one as he stepped forward, and she touched his arm as if that alone could stop him from making a move. Decisions, decisions. But one thing made it clear what she should decide on. In prison, she could not protect Josh. He'd be gone for however long the judge decides on, and there would be nothing she could do. At home? She could keep an eye on Bryce. "No Josh," she said, dropping her hand as she narrowed her gaze on Bryce. "All right, you can stay. However long you want. But I will be watching you, so don't even think this means you have any power here." She hated the idea of him being in her home, but even worse she hated the idea of Josh rotting in jail.

Joshua had not even thought to ask about or mention the fact that Bryce was supposed to be staying in the Fire dormitories. His anger and upset about the whole situation had driven him to forgetfulness. All the same, when Nell asked what he had failed to, Joshua's eyes narrowed expectantly at his brother. "They kicked me out." Bryce did not seem proud of this. In fact, Joshua, who'd grown up with him, would guess from his tone that he was trying to cover up some sort of bitterness. The attempt was somewhat ineffective. "I wonder why," Joshua muttered scathingly, unable to help himself. "Did you try to burn them down while everyone was sleeping?" He knew he should not have been egging his little brother on but he could not help himself. They'd had a rivalry of this nature since they'd been little kids. He could not help the anger that burned in his chest, the desire to step forward and throttle his younger brother. There was no family loyalty any more. "No," Bryce practically growled. "They just did, alright? So I want to stay here." It was a demand rather than the request it had been the last time he was here. Maybe if Josh had not refused him the first time, this would not have happened. But no, Joshua could not bring himself to believe that his brother was better. After all, Bryce had snapped again. He'd probably snap a third time. Josh hated the idea. "Yeah, like I'd really want you living with me after you've already shown what a pleasant house guest you are." Bryce narrowed his eyes and they glared at one another for a moment moment, a livid staring contest.
Nell's hand on his arm reminded him of what he would be losing if he went for his brother right then and there and he brought his own up to grasp it, something stable he could hold onto to stop from losing his mind like Bryce had. The brothers had one major difference, and that was Bryce's mental instability. Josh was more controlled than that, he had to be. I can't give him the satisfaction. He shot Nell a glance of silent thanks, wanting her to know that she'd helped him without saying it aloud and allowing Bryce to gloat about it. Nell chose as he thought she would and his lips twitched slightly as he looked at her, mingled gratitude and exasperation in his gaze. He was glad she was so loyal to him but at the same time almost wished there was a way to solve this without his brother winning. "Thank you, Nell," Bryce said in a sugary tone, offering a cold smile. "You're so sweet." Joshua's grip around Nell's hand tightened ever so slightly—not enough to be uncomfortable, more of a sign that he was fighting off another pulse of anger. "Do you really think you scare me, sister?" Bryce didn't seem intimidated, probably wasn't, but that was not what set Josh on edge. "You're not a part of this family, Bryce," he said coldly. "Nell is more my family than you ever were." It was a low blow and he could have sworn that he saw something unreadable in Bryce's expression, almost like shock but not quite.
"Looks like you two won't have to change the locks after all," Bryce said, jingling the key. It seemed he'd recovered from whatever it was he'd felt when Josh insulted him, at any rate. "I'm going to go and get some things I'll need. Expect me back." He wiggled his fingers in an irritating wave that made Joshua want to slice his fingers off individually and then went toward the back door and presumably through the front. Joshua let out a pent-up, shuddering breath and pulled Nell into a tight hug. He didn't want to show any sign of weakness in front of his brother, none at all, but he did not care if Nell knew what he was feeling. She knew everything about him. "I'm so sorry," he said earnestly, wanting her to know. "I didn't think—I never would have thought..." Bryce and Rafael, what a combination. And now Nell had to live with a psychopath under their roof because of him, because he'd been the idiot who'd stabbed Rafael. The legal system wouldn't save him for a while yet. "Is Annabel alright? Did he do anything else other than break in?" It hadn't really been breaking in, really, not if Bryce had the key, but it came with the same feelings as a robbery. Violation of privacy. Lack of safety. Their home was no longer an impenetrable fortress but an easily accessible ruin. That's how it felt. The enemy would now be sleeping inside the walls.
