“Is this all you do? Play video games all day?” A pair of small, dainty feet dangled over the arm rest of the couch, head rested comfortably on her brother’s lap. Devin stuck out his tongue in response before hitting a few more buttons on his controller. Athena rolled her eyes and chuckled. “You haven’t seen me in a few months and this is how I’m treated? I’m a guest!” Devin then took a moment to laugh and paused the game to look down at her with a smile. “Good grief ‘Thena. You’re my sister, not a temporary guest. Last time I checked you were moving back up here.” Although he was teasing there was a fluttering of happiness in his heart. The prospect of having his family move home with him was exciting, and could not wait for it all to be official. Athena had come up early because school was out; Judith wanted to ensure she was around in time to start school in January in case the move had any hitches. Christmas would at least be spent with his sister, which was a welcome thing. He was happy to know that he did not have to deal with the big holiday all alone. The girl had gone quiet and took to snuggling up to her brother instead of arguing. Her attachment to the boy was obvious.
After the game ended Devin shut off the console and leaned back on the couch with a sigh. “Josh is coming over in a little bit,” He broke the silence after a moment or two, noting how quiet Athena had been. She allowed her eyes to drift up in his direction with a bright and unwavering smile. It looked almost exactly like her brother’s. “Oh! That’s exciting!” Athena exclaimed. “Too bad I’m gonna be heading out with some of my old friends soon. You don't mind?” She had not been in Canada long enough before to really spend time with any of them and play catch-up, but now with winter break upon them it would be simple enough. The blonde shrugged and did not mind that in the least. “Sure thing sis.” The girl partially frowned and placed a finger to her lips in thought before poking his arm lovingly. “I think I can wait to at least say hi to my other brother right? That would be the polite thing. And then I’ll go.” Devin smiled and pushed her off of his lap so he could get comfortable again. His eyes flitted over towards their Charlie Brown Christmas tree, which was a little fuller than the tiny sprig in the cartoon series but scrawny in comparison to others.
Athena got up and made way to the other room to get ready. “Oh, and I’m going Christmas shopping too! Aunt Judith gave me a little money. Anything you want this year?” That was a question he had been waiting to hear, just so he could give the answer, “Nope, I already have you and Aunt Judith coming home. That’s the best present.” From the other room, Devin could hear the girl chuckling. With a sigh he sprawled out on the couch and got comfortable as he waited for Josh to come over and hang out. There was a present neatly wrapped near the tree for his best friend; it seemed rather suiting and hoped that it would be of use. As though the Christmas spirit filled the Earth graduate from the core, Devin began to hum ‘Jingle Bells’ while tapping his foot lightly on the floor. He had already called up most of his friends to wish them a happy holidays, and hoped they were doing some special things with their families too. I’m just glad Athena is here. It at least made the holidays feel a little bit brighter. It let him know that things were changing for the better, and Devin looked forward to it. “What do you think Josh would like for Christmas?” Athena asked as though thinking her name drew her attention once again. Devin shrugged to himself. “I’m sure he’d like anything you give him. Maybe a puzzle or something.” Joshua liked stuff like that.

"Where ya goin'?" Annabel was oblivious to nothing as she leaned over the second floor balcony that overlooked the front yard and driveway. Joshua shielded his eyes from the bright winter sun as he looked up at her, car keys dangling from his hand. "Devin's," he said, loud enough for her to hear. "Why?" He didn't really see that it mattered considering she was probably going to do what she had done almost every day since she'd started her six month long break from school. It was coming to a close and she'd soon have school work again like everyone else but until then she spent her time doing what most gamers did: gaming. "Just wondering. Tell him I said hi!" He nodded to show he'd heard. "And it's from both of us!" Joshua chuckled at this last bit and gave her a thumbs up, knowing that she was talking about the gaming system that Joshua had ordered for his friend. Custom, which meant a buttload more money than the console was originally but that was never an issue for Joshua. Annabel had been the one who'd suggested it, though, along with all of the other bits and pieces that "went along" with it. She knew video games better than he did and when Joshua had mentioned that Devin only had a PS3, Annabel had adamantly insisted, "Fix that. Seriously." Ah, to be a gamer. She had every console one could own and an entertainment system full of games, as well as another bookshelf that held nothing but games. Really, money was a dangerous thing. Most of the games and systems were Christmas presents as she didn't have her own money.
The drive to Devin's was a little slower than normal, mostly because he always made a point to slow down on the icy roads. He didn't care if it frustrated the drivers behind him that wanted to go over the speed limit and kill themselves, he could not afford to crash this car. Harper was not something that would be easily fixed if she got wrecked. Eventually he pulled into the parking lot of the building and knocked on Devin's door, greeting him with a broad grin when it was opened. "Yo, DJ, 'sup?" Josh was always in a jovial sort of mood during the holidays. It was a time when he got to see his friends more often than usual thanks to school not getting in the way and it was also a time when it was considered perfectly acceptable to give gifts. Nothing wrong with that! He expressed surprise when he saw Athena, not being aware that she was going to be over. "Hey 'Thena," he said, cracking a friendly smirk in her direction. "If I'd known you were here I would have brought you something." His words were genuine, sincere. Especially since he hadn't seen his 'other sister' in a while. Really, when you got as close to a family as he was with Devin's, they might as well be family. He was the same way with Lark. Maybe Nell would have been like that, too, if not for the fact that he'd gotten close to her in another way. "Anything you want? I'll get it for you." No holding back with Josh. He cared more about making his loved ones happy than all the money he'd end up spending.
Turning his attention to the large and quite heavily bag of presents he had in his left hand, Joshua lifted it slightly, the grin still on his face. For someone who didn't often smile, he hardly stopped when he was around his best friend. It was like he saved up all of the grins and smirks and smiles and laughter until he was in good company and then just let it all out. "From Annabel and myself, as I'm sure she'd kill me if I forgot to point that out. And she says hi." Oh, siblings. They really were pains in the ass sometimes but you loved them at the end of the day. Devin was like a brother and Athena like a sister so they fell under that category as well, though they managed to get away with not being quite as annoying as Annabel managed. It was probably because his thirteen year old sister was more than adept at getting under his skin. She knew all the tricks. In the bag of gifts there was the (custom) Halo-edition Xbox 360, all of the Halo games (because why not?), three extra controllers to complete a full set (gaming, Annabel insisted, was more fun with friends), and a headset to complete the package. "Figured you could make use of it somehow, eh? I'll play you a couple games if there's still fun in knowing you'll win." He laughed at the thought. They could always get him drunk and then he'd stand a chance but he really didn't want to be the only drunk one. Besides, this hang out needed to be sober after what had happened the last time with Devin sticking his hand in the damned fire.

Content with a few good rounds of Modern Warfare, Devin set the controller on the table and wandered into the kitchen to grab himself a drink. The fridge only held the basics: water, milk (for cereal of course), a carton of juice for Athena, and of course a few twelve-packs of assorted soda. Snagging one of the cans, Devin popped it open and took a swig before hearing the doorbell go off. Eager as always he somewhat half-skipped to the door and pulled it open to see his best friend standing in the doorway. “Yo, Josh!” The Earth graduate replied cheerfully, stepping out of the way to let Joshua inside. Athena, upon hearing a familiar voice popped out of the other room and smiled brightly. “Josh! How are you?” Athena exclaimed before running at Josh and wrapping her arms around him tightly. The girl did not know much about personal space; something she seemed to share with her brother (though he was a bit more conscious of his physical contact than she was). She stepped away and looked up at him. “Oh, don’t worry about it! I’m just glad to see you, and just in time for the holidays.” Athena did not mention going out to go shopping and grabbing Josh a little something for Christmas; Devin merely smiled and stuck his hands in his pockets. Athena waved him off with a chuckle. “Ah, I love you. It’s really fine! I need to head out to see my friends now.” She walked to the door and opened it, glancing back at the two boys. “I’ll see you later!” With that, she shut the door and left Devin and Joshua to their own devices. Scary, isn’t it?
“You know you guys didn’t have to get me anything, right?” Really, Devin was just content with his friendships and spending time with people as opposed to getting gifts. They were nice and a good token of friendship he supposed, but nothing like the bonds he had with other people. That was always more important in the end. “But tell her I said thank you, and hi back!” He really did love Christmas. Something about the holiday season brought him into even higher spirits, which was saying something considering he was usually pretty jovial to begin with. Realistic yes, but his attitude often times portrayed otherwise. Devin peered into the bag and his eyes went wide with shock. Holy shit… Everything he had wanted was sitting right there in that bag. Instantly he turned and set it on the coffee table in the living room before turning towards Josh with a soft smile. “Thanks man, this is awesome! I can’t believe you actually…” Actually, he could. Devin never expected to get any gifts from his friend, but he knew Josh well enough. It was no surprise that he went above and beyond. No holding back. The blonde nodded eagerly. “Oh hell yeah! I can make use of it every single day. I mean, now I’ll never have to leave my house.” Joking, of course, but the thought did cross his mind more than once. What he could give to be a lazy bum and do absolutely nothing for the rest of his life. Glorious, glorious laziness.
Upon Joshua’s suggestion, a glint of arrogance flicked through Devin’s bright blue eyes before he pulled the Xbox out of the bag and set it on the table. “Dude, I don’t think I could ever get tired of winning.” He was competitive by nature and always liked a good chance to win something if he could. With video games, Devin knew his way around the controller. Josh was better with chess and puzzles and other strategic board games; both had their strengths and weaknesses, and both liked to give the other the opportunity to show off and have fun in their element. Once the boxes had been opened and the console was set up, Devin looked to his best friend and offered him a controller. “You sure you wanna play me?” He challenged lightly with a smirk. “I mean, I can’t say I won’t go easy on you or anything…but I’m definitely up for a round or two.” He flicked on the TV and flopped back on the couch with a heavy sigh, wriggling a little to get comfortable. The game started up the intro. “Feel free to grab anything from the fridge if you want, or snacks or whatever! I’ve got plenty of shit around here to munch on and stuff.” He offered. His home was his friend’s home; if he could offer someone a place to sleep or something to eat, then he would. The boy would give up the shirt on his back for a friend.

He was used to Devin's sister and her kamikaze hugs of doom and so Joshua was more than ready for the girl to wrap her arms around him. He chuckled in amusement and returned the gesture, answering the question with an, "It's Christmas, I'm great. Favourite time of year and all." Not his favourite season but his favourite time and for Joshua that was enough. Athena insisted against the giving of gifts and Joshua wasn't too bothered by this. He wasn't in a place to argue right now and wouldn't anyway. "If you're sure about that, okay," he shrugged, putting his hands in the pockets of his jeans after he'd set the bag of gifts down and looking content. He was an easy-going person around his friends. He was so hard-working and dedicated that it was nice to come and hang out with Devin for a while and really relax. The Earth elemental complimented his personality in many ways and this was possibly one of the reasons the two clicked as well as they did. Devin was a pacifist, Joshua was aggressive. Devin was approachable, Josh wasn't (or at least, not nearly as much). Devin was lazy, Joshua wouldn't be lazy if you paid him to be. It meant they didn't have much in common but they'd made their friendship work so far! "It was nice seeing you again. Have fun." His words were sincere as he smiled and lifted his hand, jerking it once in a lazy wave before letting it drop back to his side again. It really had been good to see Athena, especially after so long.
Joshua rolled his eyes and waved his hand at Devin's comment. "Oh, shut it," he insisted. "You know you're excited." He was mostly trolling his best buddy but he really didn't mind buying gifts for all his friends. There were people that insisted that holidays should not involve gift-giving, that it took away from the spirit of the holidays (or the true meaning of Christmas) but Josh believed that it did the opposite. If the gifts were well thought out and personal, it was a way of assuring those close to you that you cared about them and knew them well. Anyone that knew Devin slightly well would know that the boy was over the moon about video games but as his best buddy, Joshua knew how to make it special all the same. He grinned at Devin's reaction, clearly pleased with himself for making a good call. "Annabel suggested the system but I wanted to make it unique. You know me, I'm a fucking rebel. I have to cheat the system." He was still grinning, obviously joking. The point of a custom edition gaming system was that it was just that. Custom. It wasn't what everyone else had, it stood out in the crowd. For his best friend, Josh ensured that it was special. "Careful you don't get stuck to the couch or something. Bathroom breaks would be a pain in the dick." Literally and figuratively, he supposed. He'd never been stuck in a chair but if it happened he'd get back to you on that.
He raised an eyebrow, smirked. "True." Winning was always fun. Joshua found that there was more satisfaction in it when it was more challenging but winning when you knew you were going to could also be pretty entertaining. There weren't as many bragging rights but it beat losing any day. "Dude, I already know I'm getting my ass kicked. I did offer." He lifted his hands to chest height as if jokingly surrendering. "Besides, you need to test it out, yeah? Make sure everything's working." It had better. It wasn't like the entire package had come cheap. Money wasn't an issue for Josh but if he did pay a lot for something he expected it to arrive in working order or else. Especially if it was for Devin. "Think I will. I'm dying of thirst." It was an exaggeration of course but he went to the fridge and grabbed a bottle of water. He would have grabbed the soda but it wasn't nearly as adept at quenching one's thirst. The shit you learned in class sometimes. He took one of the controllers and requested with a laugh, "Try not to kill me in the first five seconds when I'm still trying to work out what the buttons do." There was always the campaign mode but he'd still need to get a handle on the controls before he died in two seconds flat. Hey, he had Annabel as a sister. It had happened before.

"It's one of my favorites too! Next to my birthday of course." Athena's voice was chipper and light as she tilted her head to the side, hair bobbing with her movements. The girl enjoyed her birthday because that usually involved a nice party, though a short family vacation was not always out of the question. Devin rolled his eyes and smiled. "Of course, 'Thena. You and your birthday. Can't forget the princess, now can we?" He teased her lightly, the girl reaching over and giving him a playful punch on the shoulder. Athena chuckled and mussed with her hair as though remembering that she were about to go and meet a good looking guy. Devin tried to ignore this; he knew his sister well enough to know the little signs and cues that inevitably gave her away. He better not touch her. Not that Devin was all that intimidating. He was more of a short blonde teddy bear than anything else. She passed her 'other brother' a bright and unwavering smile as she walked past him towards the door. "Nice to see you too Josh! I'm gonna go spend money, so I think I can have fun with that." Devin shook his head and dramatized his exasperation with Athena. Really, he loved his younger sister and bore a fierce protective instinct over her no matter how annoying she might become. He assumed it was merely the fact that they lived with one another for so long that after a while some of the little things did not seem so little anymore. Mountains from molehills.
Oh, Devin was excited. He was excited beyond words that he was now holding a custom made Xbox with one of his favorite video games plastered all over the plastic cover. It was epic. Be still my heart, He thought dramatically. He cocked an eyebrow and smiled. "Hell yeah I'm excited! That doesn't mean you had to get me something." He was not going to refrain from showing his delight in the gift! That would not be very Devin-like. "I have something for you too, of course." With a nod, Devin turned and wandered over to the Christmas tree. Having his job did at least give him the advantage of buying gifts for his friends on holidays and birthdays. Picking up the box, he turned around and handed it over to his best friend. "Hope you like it! I never know what to get a man that has damn near everything, so I tried to be as creative as I could." Inside the box was a 3-D puzzle of the Roman Colosseum. Joshua liked history and puzzles, so it seemed like a pretty sweet combination. He proceeded to observe his own gift with childish delight. "Annabel is a genius, as are you. I've been saving up for one of these actually. Now I can use the money for something else!" Devin did not have a whole bunch stowed away for buying said Xbox, but it was enough for him to use on that gaming chair he had had his eyes on for quite some time. "I'll just piss in a bottle," He tried to keep a serious expression on his face but that did not happen for more than a split second before smiling. Subconsciously he adjusted his shorts at the thought of being unable to relieve himself.
Devin was competitive by nature, which was odd considering his pacifistic personality. He did not like to fight but was not against a good challenge in something he was good at, like video games. Josh made for a decent opponent at least; he did not come prepared to verbally attack Devin should he gain the upper hand and kick Josh's ass. "Yes, yes you did offer. It's nice to have someone offer for me to beat them up." He chuckled, making light of the fact that he was one of the least confrontational people. Devin closed an eye and pointed to Josh with a smirk. "Right! Gotta test out the new hardware y'know. Make sure it's fully functional." Instantly his mind drifted into the gutter and a faint chuckle passed his lips. Of course Devin never claimed that his mind was ever out of the gutter. More like took up permanent residence there. While the music played he watched as Josh retrieved himself a drink. Forgetting that he left his soda in the kitchen when his friend arrived, Devin shot up from the couch and went to grab it before getting comfortable again. Once the game started he would not be interested in removing himself from the couch for a while. "Aww," The blonde pouted, "Way to ruin my fun. But fine, we'll do the first campaign level. Then I have no real way to kill you and you can't blame me if the Covenant beats the shit outta you." The game started up and Devin leaned over his knees to try and focus on the TV screen. Did he take the gaming business a little too seriously? That was certainly possible. Hopefully it would benefit him in the long run.

Joshua merely looked amused. "Course I had to get you something. You're my best buddy, it's Christmas, I don't need another excuse." He didn't so much enjoy shopping for the gifts as handing them to his friends and watching their expressions light up with delight if he proved he could make a good call. It was satisfying. He preferred to give gifts in person if he could get away with it rather than sending them through the mail or telling his friends not to open it until Christmas. Seeing the look on their face was so much better than an over-the-phone thanks, no matter how sincere. "Oh, so I'm not supposed to give you shit but you can give me shit? I see how it is." He was smiling, though, cheerful, so hopefully Devin could tell that he really didn't mind. He liked getting gifts. He did have a lot of things thanks to his wealth but gifts were special. They made you think of the giver whenever you put them to use and it was a pleasant feeling. Most of his gifts ended up being books, which of course to a man with a personal library was not a bad call. Unwrapping the box that Devin handed him, Joshua examined the puzzle with a curious fascination. He wasn't the type to burst into a loud exclamation of glee but the glint in his gray eyes said enough. "This looks difficult," he mused thoughtfully. He'd done a 3D-Puzzle once before, a dragon that his sister had asked him to work on. Only once. It had been challenging. "Perfect." He grinned, then, breaking the intense expression. "I'll be working on this for days. That's what I like. Thanks, DJ." He was very good at puzzles and so he usually finished them with lightning speed. This looked harder.
It was good to know that he'd saved his friend the necessity of blowing a bunch of money that he didn't necessarily have on something like this. Joshua had plenty of money, more than he actually knew what to do with, and DJ was just another teenager trying to scrape by with a job and an apartment, bills to pay, the works. He liked to hear that he'd done him a favour. "Have fun with that," he chuckled. The Fire graduate raised his eyebrows when Devin mentioned pissing in a bottle. It sounded like a plan and all, until you really thought about it. Why was Joshua thinking so deeply into things? Well, because that was a part of his personality. He couldn't leave things as they were. He had to pick them apart, analyse them. "Uh huh. And what'll you do once the bottle gets full, huh? Drink it? You wouldn't be able to get up for food and drink, either." He smirked his amusement. It was disgusting to think about but he doubted that his friend would actually get stuck in the chair. "Well, we know I'd kick your scrawny ass in a real fight so it's only fair." He thumped his friend on the back at the word 'scrawny', grinning. Devin wasn't a limp stick and so Josh was only teasing. It was his pacifism that really held him back. Wouldn't hurt a fly. Joshua would never hurt his friend and so an ass-whooping wasn't a likely thing for their future. Only in video games where Devin reigned supreme.
His mind jumped straight after Devin's into the gutter and the graduate sniggered, eyes sparkling. "Dude, no homo." That only made him laugh harder and he shook his head, face flushed from the laughter. He wasn't using the phrase in the serious sense of course. Devin knew he wasn't gay, Joshua knew he wasn't either. It was why he could make jokes about being head over heels for the blonde beside him without breaking composure or adding a 'just kidding' to the end. If people really doubted his sexuality then they didn't know him well enough. "I'm not that bad," Josh scoffed. He could hold his own against the computers like most people as long as the difficulty wasn't set insanely high. AI could be tricked, fooled. People were a lot harder to baffle and Joshua usually died first in competitive matches with friends. He was smart and strategic but there really wasn't a lot of time for strategy when someone waits by your spawn and puts a bullet in your head ten seconds in. "It's a game, Dev, we're not trying to get into the Guinness." Joshua said this as he glanced over to observe Devin's intense posture and expression, his own relaxed and light. Maybe that was part of his problem. Maybe he didn't take gaming seriously enough. He focused more on school, on learning useful things. Devin learned how to kill people on a TV screen. Different fields and all.

“Whatever floats your boat, man.” Devin teased with a spark of humor in his blue eyes. He enjoyed getting gifts—who didn’t?—but also did not expect any every time he turned his head. After years of knowing Josh it should be obvious that Christmas would involve a gift but every time the blonde tried to tell him that it was not necessary and that “he didn’t have to”. It was a pretty pre-set conversation around this time of year. “Actually I didn’t give you shit,” Devin pointed out, smirking. “I gave you a present. Though contents in the box may not be congruent with the picture on the front.” He shifted his eyes back and forth as though he had something to hide, but that did not last long before he burst into another chuckle. Really, could he ever keep a serious expression on his face when making a joke? Probably not. It made lying to people difficult too. He watched with a pleased expression when Joshua opened the present and looked it over. Like Josh, it was one of the reasons Devin enjoyed giving gifts to others. Their bright smiles were so uplifting. Difficult? Yeah, that was pretty much the reason he went out of his way to buy it for his best friend. A challenge. Devin smiled as Josh did. “You’re welcome! Figured you could use something time consuming and mildly infuriating.” It was a joke of course; he would never intentionally find something to piss off his best friend. That could be hazardous.
There were times when Joshua bought him expensive things that made Devin’s gifts seem inferior. It was nothing his friend did, no! More the fact that he wished he could go out and give his friends the world and everything they could ever want. When that was not feasible it made him feel bad to see others spend more on him when he could not afford to return the favor. The gift was more heartwarming than he let on. “I will have fun with that,” He nodded. “Since my aunt gives us money for groceries I can actually use it for something I want.” This was knowledge from previous experience; the siblings could eat someone out of house and home if given the chance. Judith was kind enough to save Devin the struggle by giving them a weekly budget to keep the house stocked with food until she managed to move back home herself. Then, the house hunting would begin. Devin looked thoughtful at his friends’ statement of the obvious. “…ew. That would be absolutely disgusting. I guess I’ll have to get up then. Dammit.” He scrunched up his face and lightly placed a fist on his knee in emphasis. “So much for upholding the ‘laziest man on earth’ title, eh? I’ll try for it again next year.” Was there even an award for something like that? If there was, he’d be all over it. That was one competition he figured he had some sort of chance at winning. He was propelled forward by Joshua’s thump on the back and he laughed. “Hey! I’m not scrawny!” Devin played off being offended. “I’m just…lacking in immense strength and eight-pack muscle definition.”
Devin wiggled his eyebrows at Joshua with a smirk. They were both very comfortable with their sexuality and so the back and forth was not awkward in the least. Devin loved the ladies, and Josh lived a similar lifestyle before settling in with Nell, so who cared what others might think? Haters gonna hate. “Aw, you know you can’t resist me,” The blonde leaned over a little and batted his rather long eyelashes. “I’m just too fucking adorable. Like a puppy. A…hairless puppy. But still fucking adorable.” He was not the most secure being on earth but if he was as ugly as a horses’ ass he probably would not get as many girls as he did. Then again, they were drunk ninety percent of the time. Hm. Oh well. He would not let that get him down; someone in the world would find him attractive. “You sure about that? Or has Annabel been giving you lessons?” Josh’s younger sister was a whiz at video games, and always gave Devin a run for his money. He enjoyed playing against her when the opportunity arose. He glanced over at his friend with a raised eyebrow. “Hey! Who told you about my aspirations to be in the Guinness Book of World Records? That was supposed to be a secret.” He pouted, playing up the drama. He loved his games and returned his gaze towards the screen but knew he could manage a conversation at the same time. Multi-tasking beast. “So how is Nell? You guys doing anything for Christmas?” He knew how much Josh admired the Earth girl and felt it was a good conversation starter.

At the word 'boat', Joshua grinned a little, his gray eyes sparkling with amusement. He was not drunk but that did not matter as he burst into song, "I'm on a boat and, it's going fast and, I got a nautical-themed pashmina afghan..." He couldn't quite pull off the exact vocal tones but it wasn't for lack of effort and Joshua really didn't care what he sounded like, as long as he didn't shatter mirrors or bust anyone's ear drums he was all good. He wasn't half bad at singing even though he'd never had lessons. Not good enough to be a singer but not bad enough to raise complaints if he got his rock on with friends in a public place. He laughed at Devin's remark, shaking his head. "If it's a bomb, bro, I will come back and haunt your ass." He didn't actually believe in ghosts and the afterlife, mind you, it was more for the sake of joking around than anything else. And if someone ever did murder him and coming back as a ghost did end up being possible, damn straight Joshua was going to haunt them for all eternity. He'd pull cruel pranks, fuck up relationships, and all around enjoy being a vengeful bastard. 'Time-consuming and mildly infuriating' might have sounded like a nightmare to anyone else but to Josh it sounded like a pretty good deal. He liked challenges, didn't like things to be simple. He never took the easy way out even if it would save him a lot of trouble. He didn't understand people who got satisfaction from solving menial things. Where was the accomplishment in that? "You definitely know me." That was so true.
Though Joshua was fiercely independent at times, he had to admit that it was nice to have the family fortune to fall back on. It was partially his now, there was no waiting until Donovan died to inherit it. As long as he didn't go buying million dollar mansions and cars he was pretty much allowed free reign. They had so much saved up that it was perfectly safe to rely on the funds for grocery, bills, the works. He did make his own money, though, and he tried to keep the fortune as intact as possible. His life was still young, after all. "I'm gonna have to agree with you there," he said, nodding and pulling a face at the thought. God, drinking your own piss was disgusting. There were people that had those neat survival tricks that could save your life but Josh wasn't sure whether or not he'd be able to stomach the thought of downing his own urine. "I don't think you'd have a chance at that one. You're not shamu the fucking whale or anything, you're still scrawny enough to up and move around." Sorry Devin, your best friend has arrived to crush your dreams and all that wonderful shit. He grinned when his friend got defensive. "See? I told you, scrawny." He closed a hand around Devin's arm, tight enough to be an actual hold but clearly not meant to hurt. "Skin and bones. You need to fatten yourself up." He liked hanging out with Devin like this. Guy time, buddy time. He felt relaxed around the Earth elemental and that was nice.
Though this was something Joshua would never do around a friend that he was not comfortable with, he reached out and patted DJ on the head when he claimed himself to be adorable. It might have seemed creepy or weird to anyone else but Devin would certainly know that Josh was just messing around. Like always. There was something about a lifetime of friendship that made you feel comfortable around another person. "Annabel give me lessons?" Josh laughed, for the mere thought of his sister trying to teach him video games was hysterical. He believed that she liked the power she had over him. He was older, smarter, more self-sufficient, but she could kick his ass in video games and that was clearly the most important asset. "Nah, man. It's more like 'Let me show you how to die in five seconds' as opposed to 'Let me show you how to play'." She was brilliant with sniper-type guns, hiding in the shadows and picking everyone off before they even figured out she was there. It was irritating but funny at the same time. "Yeah, I'm thinking of having a party and Nell's on board. You gonna show?" He wanted to make sure he got a chance to invite all of his friends to the prospective party. He was pretty excited to hang out with all his friends during the holidays. "She's good, though. We're both good." No mention of Jane, of course not. For why would Josh bring up business that was his fiancée's alone? He wouldn't.

Oh god that song. Devin broke into a smile and started laughing as Josh sang a few of the lyrics. He hummed a long, swaying his head as it played itself in his head. "Fuck trees I climb buoys mother fucker!" He replied with as much emphasis as they gave in the video. Lonely Island was great for random fuckery songs, and Devin could thoroughly appreciate them. The song 'I Just Had Sex' got stuck in his head. "I would be honored if you came back and haunted me out of aaanyone else," He replied with a fervent nod. "Because then I'll know you're still around! I would miss you too much otherwise." He was playing along with the joke while simultaneously making a serious comment. Josh was his best friend; without him, where would he be? Josh-less. And that would suck balls. They had been friends for so long and been through so much, Devin wondered how different life would be had he not met his best friend. He had other friends, sure, but nothing compared to your best buddy. Top dog. King of the hill. Any other metaphors that said Josh was the shit. "I would hope I know you a little bit by now." Devin shook his head. Really, if he did not know something about Joshua by this point there would definitely be a problem. It would mean they were either not as close of friends as they claimed to be or Devin never paid attention. Neither of those were true.
"Dude, way to be a downer! I can be smaller than Shamu and still be the laziest bum on this earth. I think you underestimate me." The blonde shook a finger in Joshua's direction, a scolding but playful look on his face. No really, he could sit around and do nothing all day and not feel the least bit guilty about shirking chores or school work. A nasty habit, but something he did not really care to work on at this time. Maybe college would be a wake up call? Or maybe the self-chosen hours and classes would only make it worse. Devin looked down at his arm as Joshua gripped it to further prove his point. He put on a mock frown. "You're just jealous," He huffed, turning up his nose. "You can't handle my skinniness." It was funny, considering he loved his junk food and soda. Surprising he was not fat and flubbing around on the couch by this point. Thank god for teenage male metabolism. "I'll be sure to do that. I think I'm on the right track with my snacks and soda, right?" Even Athena was stunned by the stash of sugary foods and drinks lingering in the house. When they went grocery shopping a few days prior she asked for him to spare her stomach and intestines and buy at least some fresh fruits or salad items for her to eat. Devin rolled his eyes but acquiesced considering Judith did give them money for food. He was not going to deny his sister what she wanted.
Devin was not opposed to teaching Josh how to play games, if he was interested. It was more the fact that his friend never displayed any real interest so Devin never offered. Annabel was his sister and he was pretty sure that there was a sibling competitiveness there. That would prevent her from feeling the urge to teach him. "She just wants to have the upper hand. You're a fast learner and I'm sure with plenty of practice you could kick her ass on occasion." And that was any gamer's biggest ego hit. You were teaching someone to beat you. How embarrassing. Devin was competitive but also loved his best friend and did not mind spending a little time teaching if Josh was interested. "Sure! I'd love to come and hang out with you guys. I have Nell's gift too, so I'll be able to give it to her when I see her." Having a job definitely had its perks, like being able to buy gifts for all of your friends. They were not extremely expensive or flashy but they came from his squishy heart. "But I'm glad you guys are doing okay." He became absorbed in the game for a minute or two before he realized something. "Oh, yeah, you've only got one year left before you graduate! How does it feel?" He asked in that deep announcers voice, quirking an eyebrow.

Ah, duets. They were fun whether you were drunk or sober and Joshua liked that he could really be himself around Devin with no restraints. He didn't have to worry about upholding any kind of stoic image or anything like that because this was his best buddy and they could just say 'fuck you' to the rest of the world. "I'm on the deck with my boys, mother fucker," he said with a grin. Comical music like that of the Lonely Island was something most people could enjoy if they had a sense of humour. His taste in music was pretty diverse as long as it avoided screaming or horrible sounding instruments. He liked his ear drums, thanks, he didn't want them to split. He hugged Devin tightly in jest when the boy mentioned missing him, the perfect definition of the word clinging as he glued himself to the Earth. "D'ahw," he said in a trollish, teasing manner, his gray eyes lit with delight. This was why he loved coming over to hang around with Devin. It was hilarious and fun and relaxing all at the same time. He had a lot going on in his life with two jobs and two majors, guy time with DJ was something he could really get on board with. He closed his hand in a fist and noogied his buddy, hard enough to be noticeable but not really trying to cause a great deal of pain. Devin was squishy and they were friends, Joshua was playing around, not trying to fuck him up seriously or anything like that. "You know I'd miss you too, man. S'why I'd switch your sugar for salt and shit. I do it out of love." He snickered at the thought.
Joshua scoffed when Devin bragged about his apparent skinniness. He was able to maintain a serious face as usual even as he lifted up his shirt and pounded on his chest. Ouch, that actually hurt. He didn't show it of course, just said, "Dude, I have muscle. Fuck your skinny ass." He thought about what he'd said and laughed, figuring that Devin would also pick up on the accidental innuendo. "Maybe not like that, though." Since he was your typical guy, Joshua picked up on most things that could be taken as a double entendre. And then some. Most of the time he would point it out no matter who he was with. Poor Nell had to put up with his sexual jokes on a consistent basis and she deserved a medal for tolerating him some days. Hell, it was all in good fun. It wasn't like he did it to be creepy or anything like that. The guy thought it was funny and that was that. "Best be careful or you will end up like Shamu, the path you're on," he teased. Nah, Devin had done pretty good for himself so far. Josh was impressed. The Fire graduate had a good metabolism but he also worked out on a regular basis and so all the sugary sweets he ate did nothing to affect his hardened muscles or his slender figure. Tall people looked odd when they were fat and so he wanted to avoid that, thank you very much. Much like he had to duck sometimes to avoid hitting his head on the lower doors. Thankfully society tended to cater to people who were a little over the average height and most doors weren't head-smacking ones. Most.
Yeah, he was a pretty fast learner. It was nice to hear someone say that about him even if it was true. Joshua might not have been reliant on the praise of others to make himself feel confident and accepted but that did not mean he was opposed to it. Especially not when it came from the mouth of his best buddy and childhood friend. "Yeah... yeah, maybe I could get better at 'em," he said thoughtfully, ideas already forming in his head. Hey, Devin was pretty good at video games, right? "Practice makes perfect, eh? I bet a few tips from a good buddy couldn't hurt, either." He nudged Devin lightly to indicate him though it had been pretty clear what he meant either way. "Maybe instead of kicking my ass, you can teach me how to kick ass. Cooperation at its finest." And hey, the thought of Devin teaching Josh something was pretty funny. Usually Josh was the one with the desire to teach things. Video games were not Josh's area of expertise, though, and so he would let Devin take the reins there. He was actually a little excited at the prospect of learning the ropes of something that his friend was good at. That meant they could have something in common and that was a good thing. Always a good thing. "Hey, awesome. I got her tickets to some opera or another. She likes them." He didn't but hey, he was chill with Nell liking whatever she wanted. "It's... weird," he admitted, after sparing a chuckle toward Devin's interview-like tone. "Feels great to be so close, though. God, I can't wait for medical school. What about you? College at last, eh?" He shoved him lightly, grinning.

Devin was not quite expecting Josh to hug him, and so he exhaled a little louder than intended and had to wriggle to get comfortable. He did manage a laugh and patted his best friend on the back. A manly clap, if you will. It was a really amusing scene, to witness a boy of five foot six being snuggled by a man of six foot three. It was like a giant hugging a midget. At least, that's how it felt. Devin did not mind in the least though; he was glad for time with Joshua and loved how at ease they could be with one another. Devin was at ease quite a bit more than his friend was on a daily basis, but still. He knew he could be stupid and perverted and make crude jokes without someone rolling their eyes and getting upset. Josh was similar to him in that aspect. A nice bit of common ground. "Ow ow ow!" The blonde cried out, closing an eye as he was met with the classic noogie to his head. "Watch the awesomness there, buddy. It takes me forever to get my hair the way it is." Laughing, he managed to duck and avoid more noogie time. His hair was in a bit of a disarray; was that really any surprise? It was a lazy day at home, so Devin saw no point in messing with any sort of gel or trying to make it look nice. No one to impress here, unless you counted Josh who probably could care less what his hair looked like. "Oh, so that's what they define as love these days? That's pretty fucked up bro. Pretty fucked up." He nodded, still smiling a little. Even if Josh did switch the sugar for salt he could cope! Salt was probably healthier anyway. It just did not taste good if accidentally used on something meant to be sweet. A cookie with salt? Bleh.
"I have muscle too!" Devin protested with a humored glint in his blue eyes. "You've taken anatomy. Without muscle I'd practically fall apart, yeah?" Obviously he knew what Joshua meant but why make it a serious 'who has more muscle' contest? He knew Josh would win, so there really was no point. Devin had enough to look good but that was the extent of his muscular-ness. So long as people did not find him absolutely repulsive that was all that mattered. It took him a second to register what Joshua said, but he laughed along with him. "Ouch man. Ouch. I thought we had something special, but obviously not." Devin shook his head and looked up at the ceiling as though fighting back tears even though there was a smile on his face. Josh was good at keeping a serious expression but Devin was not. It was a good and a bad thing, he supposed. "Don't be hatin' on the whales, bro. Besides, Shamu has it made! He gets to do flips and show off for people and get free food." Devin definitely was not all that worried about his weight at this point, even though he probably should. One day it would catch up to him and bit him in the ass. Then again he never did claim to be one that looked too far into the future. For him, getting as fat as a whale did not seem all that close at hand. He did lift up his shirt for a moment and poke at his stomach; it was flat but had no heavily defined muscle tone. Just enough to prove that it existed. Nothing more. "I think I'm good for a while though." Give it a few more years and Devin would try and be more conscious about his weight. Until then he was content with soda and junk food.
The longer Devin thought on it, the more he realized how little he and his best friend had in common. It was not necessarily a bad thing, but a realization that hit him only just now. He was lazy with no real direction, played video games, did not strive hard in school, the works. Joshua was the opposite. Sometimes he wondered how their bond was so strong with so little to work off of. That's because we know how to make it work. We're just that fucking awesome. No further explanation needed. He glanced at Josh with a smile. "Yeah, you could." Anyone could with the right amount of practice and patience. Like with anything if you were going to get pissed and walk away you were never going to learn. "Oh? You're interested in learning a little from the master? I could definitely give you some tips on how to be amazing." Teasing in his tone of course, though he was serious in saying he did not mind helping Josh out. His blue eyes lit up with excitement and he nodded eagerly, now looking forward to playing games with his best friend. I can actually teach him something instead of the other way around. That would be new. "Dude that would be sweet! I love ass kicking lessons." So maybe he would not go entirely easy on his friend during these lessons but how would Josh feel the urge to learn if he made it too simple? "Aww, that's sweet. I got her a bunch of cookbooks. I'm sure she could make some good use of them." Like testing out the recipes on Josh, for instance. Nell was a good cook that he knew of so it should not bee too bad. "I'm sure you can't! It feels weird to be graduated but not bad. Going undecided for now until I figure out what I wanna do." He was still interested in video game testing and skateboarding.

Since he actually had taken anatomy and could ramble for hours about said subject if you gave him the chance, Joshua almost gave a too-serious answer to Devin's question. Sometimes he forgot that not everyone liked to hear long-ass spiels about things they wouldn't understand unless they'd learned themselves but thankfully he caught himself in time. His buddy was intelligent but it would take a while to explain all of the little branches and subjects that his spiel would have covered and it really wasn't worth it for the sake of the joke. So, instead, he simply said, "Then you'd literally be skin and bones. Blegh." It was a nasty thought. His mind went to how some of the old people at the retirement home had lost all elasticity and youth in their skin so that it sagged and hung in paper-thin folds off their bodies. It was a sad sight sometimes, age. He tried not to allow himself to worry about the day that he'd be an old man with all the problems that came with age. That was a part of his future he didn't look forward to in the least. "Not that special, bro. Screw the back door, I'll find another way out." He threw him a wink, figuring that Devin would understand. He loved that he could trust his buddy to catch on to all of the little wordslips and weird phrasings, all his immature and inappropriate jokes. Joshua had matured in many ways over the years but he did not think his mind would ever permanently leave the gutter. Hell, Josh didn't even want it to. Perverted jokes were often the funniest jokes because they made some people turn red as a cherry and others die laughing.
With a completely straight face, Joshua asked, "Does he splash and get e'rybody all wet?" The song was still stuck in his head from earlier and so he could not help but make a trollish reference to it. And now it was stuck even further. This ain't Sea World, this as real as it gets, he thought, keeping the beat alive in his head. Oh, he was going to have to listen to the damned song later. It would annoy him the rest of the weak otherwise. He was at least glad that Devin had confidence in him when it came to getting good at video games. It was always nice to have your buddies tell you they thought you could do something, at least if you were Josh. He didn't survive off people telling him things like this but he certainly thrived off it. Like it or not, Devin's opinion mattered to Joshua. He might not show it very often but if Devin was upset with him or his actions in some way, he'd feel guilty. Not always guilty enough to rectify the situation or change his opinions but still enough that he could detect that guilt. "The master, huh? Now I wouldn't get cocky. I'll have to sic your competition on you in the form of a very competitive sister." He laughed, shaking his head. Then his expression changed for a moment as he said, "Ah, did I tell you she got her powers?" Annabel wasn't as happy about that as anyone had hoped. They were the 'wrong' powers, as she'd so eloquently and angrily phrased it. "Water. First in the family, at least for a while. She's not too pleased." He looked sympathetic for a moment, then shrugged. "She'll get used to it, I guess." Devin's sister had adapted to being powerless, after all.
"At least she can acknowledge us at school, when it goes back at least." Joshua did not always seek out the silver lining on the clouds but if it was an evident lining he would still point it out. He'd been worried about what would happen about Annabel if she ended up being Fire and now he wasn't going to have that worry. She'd be able to acknowledge Joshua and all his friends in their alliance without worrying about reprimand from another. Still, he felt bad that she was so bummed. "Dude, it's Nell. I'm sure she will." He was not too worried at the prospect of potentially being overloaded with a different recipe every day or meal because of a cookbook or anything like that. He liked it when Nell cooked for him. He liked everything that she did. He was biased of course. "Being undecided isn't so bad," he said, sounding contented enough as he pressed the buttons on the controller and got a feel for what the fuck was going on. And then ran straight into his death. "Well that was an intelligent move. I'm wonderful." He laughed at himself, shaking his head. "Right so, uh. Tips, bro. How do I not die?" He laughed again, obviously amused. He knew there were probably several ways to avoid certain death in a game like Halo but it was a good idea to get a few tips from the self-proclaimed 'master' and simply work their use out on his own. He could play for hours and figure shit out for himself but no thank you. Joshua didn't think he could play for hours even if he was good. Didn't have the laziness for that.

Devin laughed and caught on to Joshua's comment; really, these two were so incredibly perverted it was a wonder that anyone could put up with them on a daily basis. Simultaneously. Devin and Joshua could be quite the handful together if given the chance to be so. It was all in fun though. Devin loved that his best friend could do things like this with him and not feel awkward or out of place. The blonde wiggled his eyebrows and smirked, his boyish features lighting up in sheer amusement. "Back door is the only way out, baby. No choice." Devin was as straight as they came lol came and was not the least bit concerned in displaying homosexuality towards his best friend. It was not like he actually meant it. No harm done. The man liked his women and would much rather fondle a pair of boobs than balls. If someone else preferred it to be the other way around that was fine of course. He was not going to discriminate. Men were simply not his cup of tea. Although they were song lyrics, instantly his mind shot straight to the gutter and Devin burst into a fit of laughter instead of actually attempting to sing along. "Oh yeah," He managed between deep breaths to try and calm himself. His sides hurt. "He just loves to get people wet. Squirtin' people using his blow hole and shit." Oh my god. Really, did he even have a filter for the perversion? Not really. Just about anything could be taken the wrong way if he thought on it long enough. With certain friends he refrained from being so outspoken but with Josh there was no hesitation.
He made a 'come at me bro' motion with his hand. "I'll take on your sister. I'll show her what a real video game master looks like." Devin smirked and chuckled, clearly not interested in making too big of a competition out of it. He didn't mind anything friendly in the least but Annabel was Joshua's younger sister and knew how protective the man was over her. He plucked up his eyebrows in interest. "Oh? No you didn't! Congratulations to her!" Whenever your family was full of elementals it was a pretty big deal to get them yourself. Athena did not have any powers, but she seemed okay with it. "A Water? That's a bit unexpected, but I guess I can see how she would be one." Her personality suited the element well enough. It was a surprise in the sense that the rest of the family were Fires, but not purely shocking. Devin smiled brightly. "Yep! I think she will cope just fine." Joshua pointed out that Annabel could acknowledge them, and realized that if she had become a Fire there would be a lot of strain. Although siblings did not have as much pressure on them if they were opposing alliances, it would still not make things easy on her or Josh at school. Or Nell. Or himself. Her being a Water was more of a blessing than anything, he supposed. Best to look on the bright side. "I think she'll come to appreciate the fact that she can associate with everyone. It might be weird for her for a while but..." He shrugged, figuring the sentence didn't need to be finished.
"I hope so. Always wanna make sure my gifts can be put to good use." Devin smiled. He liked to do things to make people happy, especially Josh and those others he was closest to. They were sometimes small, simple things but for him it was the thought that counted. He wanted them to mean something, or at least have a use for the person he buys it for. If he had more money he would try and go a little bigger. "Well, it's not bad for me. I wasn't even sure about college but I figured it's best to do it." Like Nike. Just do it. There was no harm, no foul, and who knows? Maybe there would be something to completely pique his interest and alter the way he looks at school and studying forever. That was wishful thinking, but one could hope. Devin fought back a laugh when Joshua died in the game but the smile was most certainly there. At least that seemed to be the boy's default expression so it was difficult to tell if he was actually laughing on the inside or not. "You are epic, bro. It takes skills to die like that. I'm envious." He clicked one of the buttons a few times, enjoying the feel of the new controller in his hands. In regards to the console, so far so good. "Well, first you need to learn to breathe..." Devin teased, glancing over at his best friend with a smirk. "Okay, in all gaming seriousness, your best bet is to at least choose a gun that is an automatic and can shoot off a shit-ton of rounds. Since we're on a team we can kinda watch one another's back and stuff. Press this," He showed Joshua the button on top of the controller, "To strafe from side to side. Might make it easier to dodge their attacks." It felt weird teaching his best friend something, but he was not going to complain.

Joshua was secretive about himself but he knew that Annabel would not mind him telling his friends about her power even if she was a bit upset about the whole Fire deal. She was an open person and tended to talk a lot even when she did not know a person well. He often had to remind her that he didn't want her rambling on about him when she was holding conversations with her friends. He appreciated any admiration she might have but he preferred to keep his personal life personal. The fact that she was very different reassured him as he spoke to Devin about her. "Yeah, we didn't really see it coming, either. I mean it suits her but our whole family have been Fire." Patricia seemed to have passed on her outgoing personality to her daughter but not a whole lot of her anger issues. Donovan and Belle often seemed as different as day and night. That was alright, though, because he loved most of his family. Bryce and Patrick did not exist. "I hope so." He didn't want Annabel to be unhappy about her situation and powers for the rest of her life. He could not imagine what it would feel like to hate the element that had been gifted to him by fate and his personality. He loved his fire, even when the element and its alliance had turned on him. His gift had done nothing wrong. Maybe Annabel would come to this conclusion soon enough. "I couldn't have ignored my own sister at school, that's for sure. It'll be a lot more convenient this way." He hated to mention convenience when it inconvenienced Annabel's happiness but the words were what they were. He couldn't help his feelings.
He would never truly understand how it felt to be unsure about college. He'd been certain about what he was doing with his life since he was eight years old and that hadn't changed even in recent years. He was so aware of himself and what he wanted from life that when others were not, it sometimes surprised him. It was never held against his friends, though. He didn't see himself as better than other people because of it. "I mean, at least you can say you gave it a shot even if you give up," he shrugged. "Not that you will or anything, it's just better to have tried and failed than nothing at all." Well, not so much failed as decided that college was not his cup of tea and dropped out. On the contrary, Joshua felt that he'd have been stranded without college. No college meant no medical school and no med. school meant no becoming a doctor like he'd always wanted. No, that wouldn't have worked for him. "Least it stops you from becoming Shamu the couch whale, eh?" The gray eyes glittered with a teasing amusement as he nudged his friend a bit harder than was necessary. It wasn't meant to be an incredibly rough gesture or anything like that, this was simply how Josh behaved around his closest guy friends. Mostly around Devin, though, for this boy was the best of the best. Again it was a friendship he hadn't cemented his true appreciation for until it had gotten many years into it but he never regretted befriended the squishy magician blonde.
Joshua rolled his eyes with a good-natured smile when Devin gave him a sarcastic answer to the question. "No shit, Sherlock." Ah, he did love his best friend. He also trusted him to understand what Joshua had meant and sure enough the Earth elemental was soon giving him a more proper explanation. "Hm. Kay." He wondered what weapons in the game were automatic but he figured he could pick them up and try them until he found one that worked. Wild bullet-spraying guns were not usually his style but he was going to trust Devin's word on it. Being a 'noob' and all, Josh preferred to follow the tips of someone who'd been playing for a while. "Got your back, bro," he said with a chuckle. He pressed the buttons when Devin told him to, chuckling at the movements on the screen. Strafing. How fancy for a video game. He ended up finding a gun that worked and stood back from an enemy, holding the trigger button and grinning when it went down. It was oddly satisfying even if the enemies were not the most difficult thing in the world. "Better than last time. I could get used to this thing." The gun, he meant, but offered no explanation. Devin probably knew what he meant anyway. At least when they were on co-op he could rely on the often derpy AI to forgive his occasional fails. His best friend would not be so merciless if Joshua forgot how to do something. It was all out of love, of course, something that was important to remember.

Devin was definitely surprised by the news of Annabel being a Water; they had always talked about her taking on the element of the rest of her family, and then out of the blue it was the total opposite. It did have it's benefits though. Devin would have felt a bit sad knowing that he could not say 'hello' to her at school and would feel hesitant seeing her in general. Joshua was one thing because that was her brother but Devin was just a friend. They were not as chill about friendships as they were with siblings. He momentarily wondered what Athena would have been had she manifested an elemental power of her own. "Yeah I'm sure it was a bit of a shock to everyone." He replied, nodding his head. It would have been strange to be in an entire family of Fire elementals and come out a Water. He could only imagine how Annabel must have felt. However it did have it's advantages and he hoped that she would take hold of that and embrace what she had. "That would be really convenient, yeah. And I can still see her too! It would have made me sad to have to ignore her at school and stuff." Devin nodded and looked happy about this. He partially frowned but it did not linger long. He was a realistic person, but even through that he was smiling and happy and tried not to let too much bring him down. That would be unhealthy, and he did not want to drag others down with him. "Is she at least excited about going to the Academy? I mean, I think it's a pretty cool thing no matter what element you are." Maybe he was biased but still. He wanted Annabel to enjoy her years there.
Although the two were vastly different when it came to their studies, Devin still admired the fact that Joshua was not condescending or rude about his lifestyle. Some people were so driven to make sure people lived the way they did that they wound up looking down on people who were different. Josh did not do that to him and Devin was incredibly grateful. It was because of this that the boy felt a stronger drive to try and do better with college. If not just for himself, but for Josh too. When he did not feel forced to do things Devin was more than likely to do them. "True! At least I can say I tried. I might wind up liking it, but I won't figure that out by not going. I'm glad you got my back, bro." He smiled at his friend, all toothy and bright. "Let's just hope I don't fail though. More like...realized I didn't want to do it and walked away." And he would much rather walk away than flunk out. Devin was an intelligent person and that would be an insult to himself if he actually got below a B. College was going to be more difficult than highschool and he knew that, so maybe he could set his standards to a C. Sad, but setting them too high might actually turn him off to the whole college ordeal. Devin laughed and nudged his best friend playfully. Hitting Joshua's side was like hitting a wall. Devin was just way too squishy for his own good. "Nah, I think the Shamu thing is still possible. Don't forget that this is me Josh. I can make anything pertaining to laziness possible." He flashed Josh a grin. He really did wonder how well this college ordeal was going to go. Having people like Sandra in his life was both a blessing and a curse, being as she was equally lazy.
"Hey, I'm not Sherlock. I prefer to be Watson. He doesn't have as much responsibility." Or did he have equal responsibility? Devin wasn't sure. All he remembered was Watson spent most of his time merely tagging alongside Sherlock and making little comments in between the assumptions made by his companion. He kinda saw himself as a Watson to Josh's Sherlock, only he wasn't short and chubby with a pair of spectacle glasses. Josh seemed to take his advice on the game and Devin nodded. "And I got your back too bro." He supposed it held a double meaning; he had Joshua's back both in game and in real life. He was not much of a fighter but he could support the hell out of anyone if given the opportunity. Supporting Josh gave him great fulfillment. Devin chuckled and smiled as Joshua took out their opponents with a greater ease. "Nice! You're good. With my help you could be the best." It was strange how cocky Devin made himself seem to be, when he was actually quite insecure. Probably because he was around Josh. "There's other gun options too. Just figured you should at least get used to the game before you go picking up other weapons that are harder to mess with." Like sniper rifles. God those were a pain in the ass if you were in up close combat with the covenant. The grunts were simple to kill anyway due to their size and were not even worth a sniper round, and the larger of the covenant were better off being killed with swords and other fast action guns. "You could always go for the rocket launcher too. Don't even have to have really good aim to use one of those." He figured if Joshua's goal was merely to survive and get the hang of the controller that was his best bet.
