It felt odd to Harley begin back in Maple Hollow. It felt like she hadn’t been there in such a long time, but nothing had really changed. She had missed everyone, and everything. Of course it hadn’t been her fault that Charolette had gotten sick, and needed more attention that what the small hospital here could give her. Harley had managed to convince all her professors to email her all the assignments so she could work on them while she cared for her grandmother. The doctor’s had told Harley that they weren’t sure how much more time Charolette had, but that it would be better for the old woman to spend it with her family in Maple Hollows. Charolette of course complained the whole time they were there, and said that they had forced her to eat the meat that they gave to her. Harley believed the woman, but when Harley had told the nurse of Charolette being a vegan, the nurse simply shrugged, and said, “She needs protein, it’s why she’s so weak.” Harley couldn’t argue with that, but Charolette filed a formal complaint much to Harley’s dismay. Harley didn’t do much, but sit in a chair making sure her grandmother didn’t cause the nurses too much problem, which turned out to be a bigger job than what she had expected.
Of course, there were the people she had left behind in Maple Hollow. All those great people, most of which had no idea why she disappeared. She had managed to slip a note to Beatrice to give to Samson, but he had been the only one to get a note. Everyone else had no idea why she decided to job off the face of the earth or if she was even coming back. Samson didn’t even really know if she had actually coming back, but she was. She had too. Harley wasn’t a cold person; she wasn’t going to leave the people she cared about behind forever. Harley had appreciated her time away from the Academy, and Maple Hollow though. It had given her plenty of time to think about everything that had happened to her. The red head had been given a chance to think of her actions, and how they effected everyone around her. Her thoughts went to Jolene, and Harley decided that she wouldn’t have changed a damn thing. She had told Charolette this on the way back, and the old woman had declared that Harley was just as stubborn as the rest of the Johnson family. Harley had simply snorted at the woman. Stubborn? No. Hard headed? Maybe. Needless to say, Harley did not feel bad about Jolene.
Her thoughts also went to Josh. They had just started to mend their relationship, did leaving mean that it wasn’t there? Harley had called him the moment she arrived in the Maple Hollow telling him to meet her at Tim Horton’s if he wanted too. It’d be nice to sit with him, catch up on all the stuff she had missed. Harley looked up to see she had arrived at Tim Horton’s. It was a good thing she had looked up or she would’ve ran right into the building. Definatly not how she wanted her first day back to be. Harley walked inside and ordered her usual, then found a table towards the back. She wanted her reunion with Josh to be private, if he showed up. As of the moment, he was the only one who knew that she was back in town. She kind of wanted to keep it that way until she saw Samson. Harley didn’t want to be bombarded with people wondering where she had gone too. She wanted her first few days back to be peaceful, then let the chaos consume her. Would she get that though, that was the real question at hand. She had no idea what happened while she was gone.

Joshua blinked and looked over at his phone when he heard it ringing, not really sure whether or not he was in the mood to answer. In the end he just yawned and let it go to voicemail, not in the mood. I'll get it in a bit. He was lying on the couch and quite comfortable where he was, listening to music and relaxing his wrist. He'd injured it during a rough tennis match with his father where the two men had gotten a little intense. He was not competitive... until you matched him to the man who had raised him. They had discovered recently that tennis was a good way to settle an argument, as opposed to attacking one another like they'd used to. Joshua had gotten so involved that he'd broken his racket in the deciding serve of the match, and nearly broke his wrist as well in the process. They'd had a reluctant laugh about that when Donovan had been treating him back at the mansion. "At least I won," he'd said, and his father had given him an odd kind of smile. Strange a way as it was happening, it felt like he was reconnecting with the man. That was what he'd always wanted—to have a father that he could talk to and hang around with. He wanted the fun back in their relationship. And now it was, even if it took a pulled wrist to prove it. He wanted to work on his essay for school but typing with one hand had frustrated him and he was not as ambidextrous as he'd have liked. Being left-handed, he'd used his left hand to hold the racket, and thus it had been the one to suffer the damage.
After merely five minutes, Joshua's restlessness won over and he stood from the couch, cursing colourfully as he nudged his sprained wrist in the process. He'd have a fun time explaining this one to Nell when she got home, he was sure. And they'd need to be really careful when kissing or doing anything else, really, because he didn't want to make it worse or interrupt a heated moment with a string of cuss words. This is so inconvenient, he sighed to himself. He could take pain medication to try and nullify it but he preferred the feeling, just so he knew when he was in danger of making anything worse than it already was. He found a voicemail waiting for him and hit the button before he even checked to see who it was. His expression was surprised as he recognised Harley's voice on the other line but a light smile touched his lips. I'm glad to hear she's alright. He had been a little miffed when she'd dropped off the face of the Earth without so much as a text message to let him know she was leaving but he did not harbour any ill will. He expected she must have had a logical reason to leave, seeing as she hadn't been around at school. If she'd merely been ignoring him he doubted that she'd risk her education just to give him the cold shoulder. Realising that he'd be a little late thanks to waiting before he answered, Josh responded with voice-mail in kind. He normally would have texted her but his wrist was frustrating him. "Good to hear from you again, Harls. I'll be there in a bit—sorry, I didn't see you'd called."
He was not wearing a sling or any sort of gauze to protect his wrist and so the only indication that anything was wrong was the awkward way that he handled things with his right arm instead of his left. He gave the clerk an apologetic glance when she watched him patiently, finally extracting the correct change and handing it over to her. He carried his order—a large iced cappuchino—over to the table where his friend was waiting, sitting down and casting her a smile. "Sprained my wrist," he explained before she could ask, holding it up so she could see where it was swollen and slightly discoloured. Donovan had done what he could to put it right so that it would heal faster but time would be the only test now. "Tennis," he added after a pause for thought. He realised that Harley wasn't aware he played tennis but shrugged it off. Now she knew, right? Joshua was not what you could call 'open' with people but he was a little less mistrustful than he had been this time last year. Telling someone that you played tennis—sorry, telling a friend you played—was not the same as giving them your personal details. "Are you doing alright? Geez, it's been a while. Everything okay?" He tried to keep his tone smooth but he couldn't help a slight note of concern from creeping into his voice.

A small sigh escape Harley’s lips as she waited for the guy she considered her best friend. She kept asking herself if he would even show up, or if she would be left sitting here by herself drinking a coffee. It was almost a depressing thought if it weren’t for other things consuming and fighting for her attention in her mind. Harley was curious as to what had gone on while she was away, for all she knew another war could’ve happened. They seemed to be common nowadays, and it really wouldn’t have surprised her. Harley hadn’t tried to contact anyone while she was gone, she had been to focused on making sure Charolette got better, and didn’t fight too much with the nurses. Harley had to give a small smile at the thought of Charolette, the little old woman, arguing with the nurses on what she could and couldn’t eat as a vegan. The one nurse, Ms. Becky, had given Harley a “stern” talking to after Charolette yelled at her for trying to feed her meatloaf. “Miss Johnson, I’m really going to have to ask you have a talking with your grandmother. She must get the right proteins in her body to get better. That’s what you want, right Miss Johnson?
” Harley had given her a scowl, but nodded her head at the question. Harley wasn’t going to force feed her grandmother, that was for damn sure. “ I don’t think you understand Ms. Becky. My grandmother has been a vegan since before my mother was born. There is no way in hell you are gonna make her eat meat now when she’s like seventy.” After that, Ms. Becky didn’t complain to Harley. What was Harley going to do? Force feed the stuff down Charolette’s throat. Uh, no. Harley refused to do that to Charolette. She might put some voodoo spell on her, and make her life more miserable than what it was. Right before the doctor’s had released Charolette, he had pulled Harley aside to explain the seriousness of things. Apparently, after two months of treating Mrs. Johnson the doctor’s would be unable to treat her because she was refusing service and medication. Horror had consumed Harley-she could still feel it while sitting at Tim Horton’s-to the point she started to cry. “ I’m sorry Miss Johnson, but your grandmother is going to pass sooner rather than later. It’s best that she be where she is comfortable, and surrounded by her family.” How was Harley going to tell Kansas that Charolette was dying, and refused help? Poor kid had lost enough people in her life, she didn’t need to be losing the woman who raised her. On the car ride back to Maple Hollow, Harley had refused to talk to Charolette. Why would she do this to them? She was the only they had left, and she was just going to leave them like that. Before they had hit the five mile mark for them to be back into Maple Hollow, Harley had exploded with anger. So much so that the car became overly heated. She hated it when she got out of control, but something like this was serious. “ Why would you do this to us? To Kansas?” Charolette had stayed quiet for a while, but eventually answered. “ It’s my time, Harley. This world no longer has any room for me, and I quite miss your grandfather. I’m sure you’ll do good to take care of Kansas, and my house.” Harley hadn’t known what to say to Charolette after that. Harley’s thoughts snapped back to reality when she heard the closeness of Josh’s voice. Her green eyes glanced up to see him walking over with his drink. She gave him a smile of the sorts, and glanced curiously at his hand. She wasn’t going to ask about it knowing that if Josh wanted too, he’d tell her about it. A delicate brow raised at his words. Sprained? Tennis? Oh God, she had missed a lot. Since when did Josh play tennis? That was sort of strange to Harley. “ I never pegged you for a tennis guy. I figured more of a golf or something like that,” she said with a smile. Harley took a sip of her coffee, and watched Josh. She looked for anything that would be off about him, but he seemed to be in all one piece. Thank the good Lord, or she would’ve had a cow. “ Are you doing alright? Geez, it’s been a while. Everything okay?” Harley took another sip of her coffee before answering him. She needed a minute to try, and think of a way to explain everything to him without overloading him. “ I’m fine, I just had to take Charolette into the city. She was hospitalized two months ago; that’s where I’ve been.” Harley paused to think of how to word the next few sentences without Josh pitying her. That was the last thing she wanted right now. “ Charolette’s dying, Josh. She won’t make it much longer. I have no idea how to Kansas that the woman who raised her isn’t going to be around for her graduation, or her wedding, or her first real date.” Harley took a deep breath then released it. She was glad to have that off her chest. Post by JOSHUA DONOVAN DALE on Jan 24, 2012 14:09:35 GMT -5
Joshua wasn't at all phased by her surprise—had expected it, even. There weren't a lot of people that knew he could play and that didn't bother him much. He'd learned back and forth between home and the country club that his parents had always dragged him off to when they needed to coexist with the other rich and over-privileged members of Maple Hollow's society. Unable to legally drink and not having many people around his age to talk to, Josh had taken to the tennis courts as a sort of escape from boredom. The Dale's also had a tennis court in the mansion and so he'd been able to take the sport to a new level when he'd developed a liking for it. "Eh, golf is alright," he shrugged. "A bit too mundane for me." He didn't like having to walk around huge areas of the course in order to chase the tiny white ball. Besides, it didn't cause much exertion. Tennis was good because it kept him fit and it strengthened the muscles in his arms, as well. Top that off with jogging and visits to the gym and it became clear that Joshua looked after his physical fitness. He had to, what with his love for sweets and eating food. He didn't like to eat as much as Nell did—that would take dedication—but he still liked it, so that meant staying in shape. He rested his hand on the table, only the slightest wince betraying the sharp pain that shot up it on occasion. Josh didn't like to show weakness, even in front of friends.
The delay before the answer unsettled him slightly, though he didn't express this to Harley. Was she hiding something from him? Was something seriously wrong? He cut off his train of thought before he could properly create scenarios. Joshua knew from many years of experience with his own mind that he'd only blow things out of proportion if he allowed himself to think too deeply about a subject. Instead he picked up his own drink and sipped it slowly, setting it down as she began to speak so that he could listen respectively. He tensed and his gray eyes widened slightly when Harley mentioned her grandmother's hospitalization, almost tempted to interrupt and ask what had happened to the old woman. Trying to be as polite and also aiming for sensitivity, however, he closed his mouth to spare her a slew of questions. Family matters were often tender wounds and he didn't want this to turn into a fight when they'd only patched up their relationship a few months ago. Dying? That word was never a good thing. Harley's grandmother was going to die. He was immediately struck with a sense of confusion and sympathy mixed together—he wanted to make his friend feel better but at the same time he was well aware that death was too permanent for that. They were both Fires, quite a proud group, and so he tried to avoid anything that sounded too much like pity. "Will you be able to take care of Kansas?" He asked a question rather than offering condolences. He was sure his friend knew that he felt for her and she didn't need to hear the words from his lips.
He had planned to let Harley know what had gone on in his life during her absence but he decided to put off sharing news of the engagement until they steered clear of these stormy waters. It seemed cruel even to Josh to spring the news of your happy engagement onto someone whose family member was dying and whose life would likely fall apart. How would Harley support them both? He worried about this but did not ask. Again, he was trying to avoid an absolute waterfall of questions. He knew from his own experience that people generally reacted negatively when you interrogated them. "And Samson?" he asked, even though he had a sort of resentment toward the Thunder. He'd treated Harley pretty badly in Josh's opinion but he knew that he had no say in the matter. "How are things with him?" Joshua did not appreciate when people challenged his love for Nell and so he figured Harley and Samson would have a similar connection. He knew he'd like to string anyone who insulted Nell from a tree and so he bit back any snide remarks about the Thunder that he may have had. He was the supportive best friend, not a nosy, interfering prick. No one liked to have their choices questioned. Heck, he didn't even know if they'd gotten back together. Last he'd heard was that Jolene had been taken out of the picture but he'd heard nothing about Harley and Samson, hence why he'd bothered asking in the first place.

To say she was surprised was an understatement. Harley had never begged Josh as the tennis type, but was more amused then freaked out. The one thing she didn’t want was an image of her best friend in small, white shorts running around a court. Now that was a disturbing image, and would love to forget it. Sadly it was imprinted in her mind, and she was afraid it wouldn’t go away for awhile. Harley took a small sip of her beverage as she eyed Josh. It had been over two months since she had seen him, and he seemed well. Harley was glad that he looked good. Of course that didn’t mean he was good. She suspected that he was though. Harley gave a slight nod, and thought for a moment. He was right, golf is too mundane for him. “You’re right. Golf is way to peaceful for you, so I take it back. Hockey seems more your speed.
” Harley grinned at him over her drink, and added, “ More violent, and just your speed.” Of course she was joking. About hockey being his sport. He could be violent, but if tennis was his game, then she’d leave him to it. Harley didn’t want to get in the way of a man and his tennis. Harley had to try and suppress a chuckle at that thought. All of her little happiness drained from her face. Harley believed she had been through enough in her life to deal with yet another death. At her age, she had seen way too much death. She would prefer to leave it alone, and just go on living, instead of worrying about whether or not someone close to her was going to die. Harley didn’t blame anyone; she didn’t even blame herself. She knew it was apart of nature for people to die, and for the next generation to take the deceased place. It didn’t make the hurt anymore bearable. Harley took another long sip of her beverage, and was thankful that Josh didn’t pity her. Harley tired from hearing sympathetic apologizes, and pitiful, “It’ll get better.” Harley knew all of that. She knew people were sorry she was going to be burdened with more death, and taking care of her young sister. She knew it would get better, but it didn’t take away the permanent pain that came with it. So, yes, she was glad when Josh didn’t say, “I’m sorry.” Harley cleared her throat, and said, “ I’ll be taking custody of her. Charolette and I both agreed that we didn’t want her in the system, and chance her being taken from the Academy. Charolette signs over the rights in a few days.” That wasn’t even the hardest part of it all. They still had to tell Kansas what was happening. The phone calls to whatever family they had had been the worst. People she didn’t even know where going to “help” plan the funeral. Harley didn’t need any damn help from people she didn’t know, and would refuse anyone and everyone. She hated when people tried to butt their nose into things that they needed to stay away from. She already had some weird lady offer to take Kansas. Charolette had told Harley that it was her great Aunt Matilda or something like that. Her father’s aunt or something like that, Harley didn’t, and she didn’t really care. After a screaming feast with said woman, Harley knew that Aunt Matilda wouldn’t be taking Kansas anywhere, anytime soon. Of course, said woman had a few heated words with her sister as well. Apparently, Harley was equipped enough to handle taking care of a child. Harley begged to differ. She knew good and well she could care for her sister better than any stranger. Money might be tight for a while, but it’d be there. Harley choked back a cough when he asked about Samson. Harley knew that the boys didn’t really like each other, so for Josh to ask about him was a slight shock. “ He’ll support me, and my choice.” Harley took another slow sip, and watched Josh. She gave a slight shrug. “ Things are good, expect for the fact that oh, I don’t, I left for two months. He didn’t even know where I went.” Harley was a bit guilty for that. She didn’t tell anyone where she was, and she had made Kansas swear she wouldn’t tell anyone. Desperate to get her and Samson out of the conversation for now, she asked, “ How are you? And Nell?” -------------------------------------------------------[/blockquote][/blockquote] TAG; Josh <3 SONG; "Turn it off" Paramore KEY; "speech", thoughts, "quotes"CREDITS; Template by Hana~ of CAUTION2.0! His lips twitched in amusement. "I'd end up melting the rink." He figured that Harley knew what he meant by that. Fire elementals tended to burn things when they were upset and ice was rather susceptible to the effects of heat. One moment there would be an ice rink and the next a swimming pool. "I can't skate that well anyway. Can you?" He was curious to know whether Harley had any skating talents or not. Joshua knew how to skate and he wasn't so terrible that he was clinging to the wall the entire time but he definitely wasn't what could be called 'good'. He knew Harley was joking and so his responses were merely to milk that humour for all it was worth. He did not miss the fact that the mood turned solemn when Charlotte and Kansas were brought up. How could it not? Death was a terrible thing. Josh was lucky in that he'd not experienced too much of it but he had certainly lost people before. His grandmother, his friend. "You're right," he said. "It's better that you take her than the system." He had no experience with foster care but he knew from what others said that it was not a good place to be. It would split the sisters, as well, which wasn't something either of them probably wanted. "How is Kansas handling all of this?" He didn't know Harley's sister too well but he'd liked her what few times they'd met. She was sweet. He wouldn't wish death of a relative upon anyone but it seemed worse when it was his friends that suffered it.
He was not the most observant man in the world but neither was he the most oblivious. Joshua picked up on Harley's subtle reaction to the inquiry and wondered what she was thinking. I don't have ulterior motives, he thought, though he did not speak these words aloud. Does she trust me? Apparently so, for she answered his question after she took a sip of her drink. "It's good that you have his support." He gave her a long and silent look, trying to convey without words what he felt about the issue. He did not like Samson but Harley was one of his best friends. One of the people he felt he could trust. He did not want another fight and so he would refrain from taking jabs at her boyfriend. Would she have done it for me and Nell? He did not think Harley and Nell hated one another and so he supposed he would never know. "Neither did I and I don't hold it against you." Then again, it was a little different with relationships. He'd stopped talking to Nell for only a week and things had gotten tense between them. That was my own fault. He'd ignored her because he was too afraid to admit defeat. He regretted it now. "Circumstances, Harley. They matter." If she'd only ignored her boyfriend because she could then Josh figured he had every right to be upset. It was different when she returned bearing the news about a dying grandmother. She'd had other priorities to deal with. Then again, would I forgive if it was Nell? He couldn't answer that.
Speaking of Nell, Joshua arched an eyebrow when Harley asked after her. She was changing the subject but it didn't bother him and so he said, "I'm fine, apart from my wrist of course. Nell is alright, too." He hesitated internally, wondering whether or not to break the news. It seemed inconsiderate to mention how great his life had been going when his friend's seemed to be getting worse by the minute but she had asked after the couple. It's her own fault if she resents me. This thought in mind, he said, "We got engaged." He did not have a ring on his finger that people could notice and gasp over, demanding the details. Instead, it was left up to Joshua to disclose the news. He liked it that way, liked being able to confess his engagement to the Earth elemental. He was proud of Nell, proud of himself for sticking it out with her. "I would have told you but, well, you've been gone." His tone did not suggest bitterness. It was true, she'd left, but he did not hold it against her. He might have been a little upset at her absence when he was unaware of why she was ignoring him but now that they'd cleared that up he was only sympathetic to what she was going through.

Harley smirked at his response. Of course he would; she probably would as well. “You know, just stick to tennis. The worst you could do was set the ball and racket on fire,
” she said, her eyes filled with humor. It was nice for her to get back into the swing of things with Josh after everything that had gone down in the past year. Harley couldn’t be more thankful that they had patched up their differences, and united in friendship once more. To say that she had missed his sarcasm and oh so bright personality would be considered a understatement. Harley raised her brow to the question, and said, “ I use to skate some before I moved her. I was big with sports when I was younger. Hockey was one of them, but I was usually in the penalty box,” a small smile was on her lips at the memory of her hockey days. She probably wasn’t too good at skating anymore, but she was sure if she got her footing again, she’d be fine on the ice. Would she play hockey again? Probably not. Like Josh, she’d melt the ice with her temper. People would be wondering why they were swimming instead of skating. Though hockey was a great way for her to release her anger as a child. As quick as the joking had come, it had went. Harley was thankful that she had Josh to talk to about it. He was probably one of the most honest people she knew, and she actually valued his opinion on things. If she wanted the truth, she knew he would give it to her. It was one of the reasons she liked him as a friend. He is also the only one, other than the select few, that could get away with telling her the truth without getting smacked. “ I would’ve fought tooth and nail for her, even if Charolette hadn’t agreed. Kansas is too fragile and innocent to be put in the system, and I refuse to let something like corrupt her.” Call her overprotective, but she loved her little sister like no one’s business. Harley thought for a moment, then said, “ We haven’t told her yet. Charolette and I are going to sit down with her later in the evening, and tell her. I know she’ll be heart broken. Charolette raised her, and now she’s losing her. The red head wasn’t stupid when it came to how Josh felt about Samson, and vice versa. They, unfortunately, disliked one another. Harley could understand a mutual hate between the two, but she really wished they would get along. They both had their own reasons to disliking each other. Samson disliked Josh because she had taken Josh’s side over his. Josh disliked Samson because of how he ended the relationship when Jolene was in the picture. Thank God she was gone, too. That girl needed some serious help, and truly hoped she got it wherever they sent her. Harley was glad that both Josh and Samson could manage to not make snide comments about each other, and would settle for hateful glares. For now. Eventually they were going to have to get over it because she wouldn’t pick sides. They were both important to her, and she couldn’t deal with not having one of them in her life. “ Would’ve been awkward if he didn’t, but he couldn’t have stopped me if he wanted to.” Harley nodded her head in agreement at Josh. “ I don’t think he holds it against me. I think I just worried him with our relationship being so sketchy at the time. I guess it was just poor timing on my part,” she said simply. It probably was poor timing on her part, but he’d have to get over it. Which Harley knew he would. As long as she made it up to him in food, and a few kisses, Harley was sure she’d have his forgiveness in no time. The thought had crossed her mind that he had found someone else. Again. Harley didn’t go through all that Jolene crap just to lose him again. Harley listened carefully as Josh spoke. She was glad for the subject change just because she knew of the dislike between the two boys. Harley didn’t want something to be said, and then end up in argument with Josh over Samson. It could happen with the temper of the two of them. It’s happened before, and the red head would much rather not revisit something as horrific as that. It had been pure torture to not be able to walk up to one her best friends, and talk to him about something. They both had been too stubborn to apologize, and it didn’t finally happen until Samson had broke up with her. Harley supposed that was one good thing that had happened out of all of that. “ I’m glad you guys are good, and still together.” Harley truly meant that. She had been hesitant on whether or not it would work out with the difference of elements, but they were still going strong, and that was good. Nell was a nice balance for Josh, and definatly could mellow him out some. Maybe. To say that Harley was shocked was a complete understatement. Engaged? “ Engaged? Wow, that’s awesome. Congrats, man.” Of course she was happy for him. Harley would judge his decisions for marriage, especially if it made him happy. Harley was in no position to be raining on that parade, and wouldn’t. Harley held up her hands, and shook her head. “ It’s fine, I’m just glad you told me. That’s quite an event. What’d your old man say?” Harley was curious to know what Donavan had to say about his son’s engagement. It amused Josh to think that Harley had been so into sports when Joshua himself hadn't taken much of an interest. "Soccer and I had a brief relationship. We didn't work out." He had been talked into trying out for a team by his father, who'd wanted his son to get more active and focus on something to do with other people at the same time. He was a terrible team player, however. Joshua was meant to work on things by himself and not to rely on cooperation for success. He'd forgot to pass the ball at critical moments and had messed up a lot in practice. The coach had taken pity on him and tried to help him work things out but Joshua hadn't wanted to drag them down when they'd played against rival schools. Ultimately he'd resigned and he didn't think his team was unhappy to see the back of him. "I don't doubt that you would." Joshua could understand more than anyone how important one's sibling could be in their life. He loved Annabel dearly. His brother? Well, he tried not to think about him too much. "I can only imagine. She's got you there for her, though, and that's more than she could ask for." The support of close friends or family in the event of a tragedy was often important. He'd never lost anyone as close to him as Harley was to Charlotte but he could fathom a guess that it would be a deep, wrenching pain. He worried sometimes about his grandparents in Nova Scotia. He didn't give a fuck if Patrick died. Sometimes he realised how heartless that was and then found he didn't care. The old man was a terrible person.
He was in agreement with her there. He never tried to force Nell to do thing against her will, except in the case of prom when he'd known she'd probably thank him for it in the long run. If he'd heard that Samson was trying to fight against Harley somehow then he would likely have had something to say. Would he have said it to Harley? That much was debatable. Joshua was not hesitant or soft-spoken by any means. At the same time, he didn't know if he'd be willing to risk their friendship by getting in the way of her feelings for Samson. He understood that not all of his friends approved of Nell but he at least expected them to keep their mouths shut around him if this was the case. "Eh, none of us can help when life gets in the way." He doubted that Harley had wanted her grandmother to wind up in the hospital and so he did not think that she was to blame for it. He was respectful enough of her relationship to drop it there. Thankfully she didn't seem to dislike Nell as much as he did Samson. That would have made their situation more awkward than it already was. "Thank you. It took a lot of guts but I'm glad I asked her." He'd been worried that Nell would reject him or she would think he was rushing into things but now she was his fiancée and everything was well with the world. For now, anyway. Life had it's ways of disrupting the peaceful calm. "I'm glad you understand." He wouldn't have liked it had she freaked out on him for not telling him sooner.
His lips twitched at the words 'old man' as he imagined how Donovan would react to being called that. "Old? Joshua, I am not old. You'll have me in a wheelchair by fifty at this rate." Shaking his head and keeping his inner joke to himself, he said, "My father was happy for me. It was him I went to for advice." His mother, Patricia, had originally been a bit miffed that her husband was the first to know, but she'd gotten over it soon enough. Josh had always been more attached to Donovan than he had his mother. It was nothing personal but everyone had the parent they could go to more often in their times of need. Josh respected the opinion of his 'old man'. He respected his mother, too, but it was not the same. "We haven't got a clue when we're making it official but hell, I'm not rushing. I just wanted to... secure the future." He said the words slowly, tasting them on his tongue, then nodded. Yes, he liked the way that sounded. He was securing a thought of his future with Nell, making it so most people knew there was going to be one. It was no summer love, no simple fling. Him and Nell were really together. Ball and chain. It doesn't feel that way to me. Nell had never made him feel trapped or suffocated and for that he was glad. Joshua didn't think he could maintain a relationship he was not comfortable in. It was not the Fire graduate's style to inconvenience himself for the sake of others. "How'd you manage to get out of school for a few months?" he wondered as the thought crossed his mind.

With the mention of soccer a sudden flash of sadness came over Harley. It was gonna as quickly as it had showed, but it had been there. Soccer. Harley refused to play that support ever again. It had been that sport that her parents had taken her from, and why she had gotten so upset. If she had never been into soccer, maybe her parents would still be here with her. She wouldn’t have grown up with Charolette, but at least Kansas would’ve known her parents, and wouldn’t be so sad with the upcoming news of Charolette’s death. Harley looked up at Josh with a sour look, and said, “I played soccer once. I’ll never play again, either.
” Harley wouldn’t even watch it on TV, and she really use to be into soccer, more so than hockey and any other sport. Now the sport was just dead to her. Harley couldn’t agree more with Josh, and she was thankful that he was there to support her with all of it. She didn’t know if she’d be able to make it through without his support, and wise words. She wished it didn’t have to play out like this, but Charolette wouldn’t take the help of the hospital, and the only thing they could do was send her home, and let her go peacefully in a place she loved. Harley probably would do the same thing. If it was her time to go, then she supposed that she wouldn’t want to spend it in a hospital. She sure as hell wouldn’t want people trying to force feed her food she didn’t want to eat. Harley knew that there was a strain between Josh and Samson; Josh didn’t agree with how things had gone down with Samson. She didn’t blame him, but her feelings for Samson were just too strong to turn off. It’d be like trying to breathe carbon dioxide; it just wouldn’t work. Harley did hope that the two managed to fix their issues with each other because Harley wouldn’t be able to chose between her best friend and her boyfriend. They both meant something to her, and she wanted them both to be in her life. Harley was excited for her best friend, she really was. She loved that he had asked Nell to marry him, though she knew that the wedding would probably be more in the future then anything immediate. It was nice to have something bright, and happy to look forward to when everything was so dark, and unhappy for her right now. Harley was ecstatic that Josh had been able to find a good girl to make him happy, and not a bitch just trying to get the green. “ Of course I understand. You found yourself a keeper, obviously you need to secure the future,” Harley grinned at him. A grin came to Harley’s lips as he spoke about his father. She was a bit surprised that Josh went to his father for advice, but was glad that the relationship wasn’t rocky anymore. At least, not as much. It was always nice to see families come together, and get along. Harley was sure that they still had a lot to work on, but as long as they were getting there. “ That’s great. I’m glad that he approves.” Harley nodded in agreement with him. She didn’t think that they should rush into the wedding, just to be sure that’s definatly what they wanted. Better to take it slow then tie the knot, and wind up getting a divorce because it didn’t work out. “ I feel you. Just take it slow, make sure it’s what you want before you rush into the wedding. You guys have the rest of your lives to sign a piece of paper, and make it truly official.” Harley grimaced at the thought of school, and all the work she had emailed to her. “ Most of the professors emailed my assignments to me, but I had two that wouldn’t send me anything, so I’ll be making that up.” -------------------------------------------------------[/blockquote][/blockquote] TAG; Josh <3 SONG; "Turn it off" Paramore KEY; "speech", thoughts, "quotes"CREDITS; Template by Hana~ of CAUTION2.0! [:\ Why anger issues? Why?]
Joshua's gray eyes flashed with hostility and anger when Harley fixed him with a sour look, entirely unaware of the situation with her parents or, indeed, that he'd said anything wrong at all. He'd merely mentioned a sport he'd once played and had dropped a long time ago, not something that was particularly offensive in his opinion. "What's your problem?" he challenged, narrowing his eyes in dislike. He tried to avoid fights with his friends but he could not help that his anger was sparked by certain things, unjustified glares being one of them. "The fuck was I suppose to know you didn't like soccer?" If he'd known that soccer had been the sport to essentially 'kill' her parents in Harley's eyes, he might have been a little less caustic and cold with his words. However, all he knew was that she'd apparently never played it since... since when? She hadn't even said. God, I can't open my mouth around people. He shook his head and took a long sip of his drink as if to calm himself. It did not do much good. The only thing that could calm his rage was time—time or Nell, and the latter wasn't here right now. Harley wasn't the only one he'd blown up at in a spur of the moment burst of anger. He'd shouted at Nell, snapped at Devin, challenged Lark. None of his friends were really safe from Josh's infamous temper.
Not wanting it to turn into another serious fight, he at least had the sense to close his mouth and end it there. He remembered how awkward it had been last time and it would be even worse, now. In their new alliance there were only three traitors and she was one of the two that could really understand how it felt to be the wolf among sheep. The Fire among the gentle pack of Earths. He was the volatile one, the loose cannon. He knew some of them feared him. Joshua arched an eyebrow at Harley, almost disbelieving. "What I want? Of course it's what I want." He never would have thought to propose if the thought of 'forever and always' with Nell frightened him. 'I do' meant a commitment that was much more lasting than a simple relationship and he was fine with that, welcomed it. She was the only one he cared about. He'd never cheated, never strayed. He'd thought about cheating in a moment of weakness, back when the relationship was new and her naivety prevented a certain level of seriousness to their connection, but that was over with now. "I'm certainly not waiting because I'm not sure of her." She's one of the things I'm absolutely positive about. There was an almost defensive note to his voice, a defiance. There was no anger but he felt the need to impress upon his friend how important Nell was to him.
He rolled his eyes when she mentioned her professors. "Assholes. Need help studying or anything?" Joshua was definitely what could be considered the 'go-to friend' when it came to study buddies. That had been the purpose of his connection to Nell before they'd become friends and it was a role he played for people who were his friends, too, if they wanted it. He was good at studying, at keeping organized, at maintaining focus. He wouldn't be the type to relent if a friend suggested ditching the books for video games or even something he enjoyed like drinking, gambling or chess. "Did they at least give you enough time? I'd hope so, given the situation." Unless she didn't explain it to them? He had taken a few weeks off school when he'd been attacked the second time but he'd been too proud to admit how bad it was, too ashamed to admit why he was skipping. It was only once he'd gotten a warning from the school and returned, despite being in a lot of pain, that his professors saw the damage that had been done. The bruises had faded but the awful scars took much longer to heal. They remained still, memories of his mistakes.

For a moment, Harley was taken aback by Josh’s anger and hostility. She wasn’t sure what she had said to anger him, but Harley was going to apologize to him like any normal person would do. Well, unfortunately Harley wasn’t the normal person, and had a temper right up there with Josh. It had been getting better, but something snapped Harley when he got snippy with her. She hadn’t done a damn thing to him besides state that she didn’t like soccer. Of course, her reason were unknown to him, but that wasn’t the point. The point was that he didn’t need to angry because she had said in a flat tone that she wouldn’t go near a soccer field or ball again. “My problem?
” Harley snapped back. She didn’t have a problem, but it seemed like he did. Maybe it was because she was so stressed, but Harley almost wanted to argue with him, but she knew what would happen if she did. Harley glared hard at him for a moment before deciding that maybe she should tell him. Hell, she hadn’t told anyone, not even Samson or Kansas. She didn’t want Josh mad at her because of something so stupid, but soccer pretty much ruined her family’s life. “ Look, I know you didn’t know,” Harley hesitated for a moment before continuing. “ When I was younger, I played soccer. My parents told me because of my temper that I shouldn’t play anymore until it got under control.” Harley’s breathing became heavy as she said the next words. “ I got so angry with them, and then I started the house fire. My dad got Kansas and I out, and he had gone back for my mom, but they never made it out.” Harley stared down at her hands for a moment. It felt good to finally tell someone, and ease the guilt that had been building on her. Harley didn’t want Josh to find out like this, but she knew she had to tell him or they’d be angry with each other for no reason. It wasn’t his fault Harley couldn’t own to the fact that she had accidentally killed her parents, or that Charolette hadn’t been able to look at her for months after the fire. It had been a very dark time for Harley, and it was about the time she started the Academy did her attitude start to change. Harley didn’t have to look at Charolette everyday, and she didn’t have to hear Kansas cry over the loss of their parents. Harley had been emotionless. A zombie of the sorts. Harley gave Josh a light smile at his answer. “ That’s good. Nell is a good balance for you.” It was always nice to see her friends happy, and content with life. Especially Josh. Harley nodded with agreement, and said, “ Well, I wish the best of luck to you both in that department.” Harley snorted in a agreement at Josh. Her professors were assholes, but she took what she could get. “ I might. I haven’t taken a look at assignments, but I’m sure that I’ll need a study partner for something.” While away she had managed to do most of her assignments, and get them turned in on time, but there were those few professors that wouldn’t allow her to bring any of the assignments to the hospital with her because they felt that she needed to be there for the lesson. Harley hadn’t fully explained what was going on because at the time, Harley barely knew what was going on when she left. “ They did. The assignments I got, I did, then emailed to them. With the other two they said I needed to be there for the lessons. So, I’ll be working late, and catching up when I can.” -------------------------------------------------------[/blockquote][/blockquote] TAG; Josh <3 SONG; "Turn it off" Paramore KEY; "speech", thoughts, "quotes"CREDITS; Template by Hana~ of CAUTION2.0! A friendship between Fire elementals could be a difficult thing. On one hand, they were both angry individuals with temper problems that could flare up at any given moment, perhaps not even over something sensible. On the other, they understood anger. Joshua knew that she was probably going to snap back when he started in on her but he also knew that he wasn't going to back down simply because they were both getting upset. "Yes, your problem. What're you looking at me like that for?" He didn't like being glared at but he might have understood it if he'd had knowledge of what he'd supposedly done wrong. I thought we were done with all this confusing bullshit. The anger was coming off him in waves, silently seething as he held her glare with his own. Two could play this game. Had he any idea what she was going to say next, he might have backed off. He couldn't predict things like this, however, and so he merely looked wary when she spoke. Didn't know what? What was so fucking bad about soccer, anyway? He didn't like a lot of sports but he didn't feel the need to glare his friends down when they were mentioned. He relaxed and listened, though, because you didn't need rocket science to realise when something was important. He realised what she was implying somewhere near the end and a sense of dread and even a little guilt flooded through him. Oh... so she...
His pride wouldn't allow him to apologize, at least not outright. Maybe Harley would understand that apologising for anything was like swallowing a bag of rusty nails for him. Not something he'd do willingly, at least not unless it was Nell. The Earth girl got special treatment but only because he was in love with her. "I can... I can see why that upset you, then." These words were the best he could give her, an acknowledgement that he understood the reason for the harsh look and that he wasn't going to hold it against her any longer. He could still feel the anger but it was residual now, not directed toward anyone or anything. It meant he would flare up much quicker than usual for the next little while but if nothing set him off then he figured he would be alright. "You didn't have to trust me with that, but... thank you. I'll keep it safe." Joshua was an excellent keeper of secrets. He did not tell his own but he could be trusted almost unconditionally with the secrets of other people. Joshua did not see Harley as a killer. She couldn't have known that her power would act up in the way it did. He didn't bother trying to comfort her, though, because he was not stupid. Telling someone that something wasn't their fault usually amounted to nothing and he didn't want to start an argument over it. I'll need to remember not to mention it in the future. That wouldn't be hard, seeing as he disliked soccer himself thanks to what it had dragged him into. He hadn't been very good at it, he'd been playing to please others. Never again.
Joshua hated falling behind on school work and having to scramble in order to catch up and so he sympathized with her predicament with the other two professors. It was stupid, in his opinion, that they had not simply allowed her to do the assignments when she was away from school. Hell, though, what could be done? Nothing, really. Noticing the time, Joshua asked, "Do you have anywhere you need to be?" He knew that he'd need to leave himself in another little bit, regardless of whether Harley had other commitments or not. He had a fairly busy life and so much as he'd have liked to devote long periods of time to his friends, the Fire graduate didn't always get his way.
[Figure we could end this soon, possible start a new one? it's set ages ago so I don't want current events to get confused with past ones LOL]
