The library was certainly one of Gale's favorite places on campus. He was dedicated to his learning, and he had a great deal of intelligence because of that. He wasn't one to flaunt or brag about it, but he knew it was true. He dedicated a lot of time to learning more about his element. He spent time learning about the other elements as well. He thought that in learning the strengths and weaknesses of other elements, it would help him in a fight. He didn't want to be brought to his knee's every time like he had been before. He tried, but he needed more power. Against the thunder students he was invincible, especially when he was soaking wet. It was just not something that gave him an advantage and he did not enjoy it. But he was pretty sure that having electric shocks jolted all throughout your body wasn't something anybody liked too much. But trying to fight back didn't help when your attacks where so much weaker.
It was almost embarrassing, and he probably would have been seriously hurt if Nell hadn't intervened. He had his mothers personality. He was sweet, trusting, and cared about people too much. He was slowly losing his ability to trust people. Slowly, but it was going away. He didn't trust Fires, and he didn't trust Thunders. It was in his nature to be enemies with them anyways, right? He didn't enjoy even being around them. He wouldn't admit that he was afraid of fire, but he wasn't afraid of the elementals. He was slowly gaining the confidence to stand up for himself. He could thank Rafael for that. There was one thing the kid did for him, was helping him fight back. Gale never stood up for himself, but rarely did he get in fights. Every time he did it seemed to be one sided, but he was going to change that. He had to.
That evening in the library was a quiet one. There where only a few people split up amungst the different tables, each one seemingly caught up in a book or two. Gale wandered the isles, pulling out a few books that looked helpful. Chatty as he was, he enjoyed the quiet of the library. It was the one place he found it easy to be quiet, because he was usually emersed into reading and studying. He didn't have homework that evening, so he decided he would study some books on the manipulation of water. It was a good thing, he thought. To learn different tricks. Not that he would say the reason was so he didn't get his ass kicked next time he got into a fight, but that was the real reason. He took the books, sitting at an empty table and flipping one of them open, skimming the words for something to catch his eye.

Anything less than perfect was not good enough for Joshua when it came to his grades. If he found himself pressed for time he would sooner sacrifice dinner or take a day off work than allow himself to slack in the area of school. One had to be intelligent when it came to medical school, really intelligent, smart enough to beat out the other applicants and stand out amongst the crowd. He could not fail in his dream, couldn't falter in his ambition. If Josh did not become a doctor, it would crush him. It did not matter that re-applicants were allowed, that there was always a chance to try again. If he did not get in on his first shot, he would feel like he'd failed. Failed himself, failed his dreams, failed his father. He had originally wanted nothing more than to do his father proud but now he wanted this for himself, too. It mattered to him. Not more than Nell, more than his friends, more than his family, but certainly more than almost anything else. That was why, despite exams being several months away and the elemental having little idea of what to expect, he was already studying. They had been back for a month, long enough to learn new things, and he was bent-set on ingraining them into memory so that he was well-prepared. Just like every other year, he could not afford to fail. Top of the class every year. I can't let this one be any different.
The silence of the library was a familiar and welcome comfort. He had grown up with a love of reading in the peace and quiet so libraries were like a natural habitat for the graduate. He was quiet by nature because he so often needed to be. Careful not to disrupt any of the others as they studied at tables nearby, Joshua was content to sit for hours flipping through textbooks and reading over stacks of notes. Most of the information was retained thanks to his good memory but it was still nice to refresh everything. So many names for so many different things in the human body, so many different diseases that a human could contract. The book he currently read would make almost anyone fear to step outside their door in the mornings. Medicine fascinated him, the way that doctors studied to find cures for things that he was still trying to understand. I'll get there someday. Pausing at the end of a chapter, he looked up and saw someone that he knew milling about the shelves. The Water was not anyone he could consider a best and closest friend but he liked him well enough and his lips twitched. I don't think he's noticed me. Joshua glanced at his book and back at Gale, pondering an interruption. He may want to be left alone. It made sense, after all. Josh wasn't the type of guy that enjoyed being pestered while reading. At the same time, it seemed a bit pointless to ignore a friend.
You never know until you try. So he decided he would do just that, closing the book and sliding it back into his already loaded bag. He hauled it onto his shoulder, weighted down by the stacks of books and his laptop, but as he was used to the pressure on his shoulder he showed little sign of discomfort. He wandered to the table that Gale had sat down at and leaned against it, one hand bracing his weight against the table. He didn't yet make himself seated. "Bonjour, mon ami." Only with those he liked would Josh tease like this. He had learned French from a young age thanks to his parents wanted him to know the language but it was not important enough to him that he would lapse into it like Nell did when she was excited or upset. He used the language to tease, to amuse, very rarely to show off. He didn't like boasting. Besides, a lot of Canadians knew basic French, even if they weren't as well-versed in it as he was. In case Gale was unaware, he said more seriously, "Sup, Gale? Are you studying or just here to read?" If the boy was studying, Josh would be a lot less forward about hanging around. He took his own studies very seriously. "Mind if I hang around? I won't bug you if you want to concentrate, you know me." He could be quiet as a mouse and simply revel in the company, or he could be a conversational partner if Gale was in the mood to talk.

There was a lot of different subjects that fascinated Gale. Despite how social he was, he loved to take time to read up on different things. It was healing for him. He read up not just on his own element, but he liked to learn about the other elements too. The way he looked at things, the more he knew about the other elements, the better he could defend himself against them. He wanted to master his element, and as leader of his element, it was his duty to do so. He took on the responsibility and wanted to become the best leader he could be for his element. He didn't want people to look at him and think he was weak. The bruise on the side of his face was enough to say that he needed to work on his fighting tactics.
While his intent was to be left alone, he heard a familiar voice and looked up. He understood enough french to understand that Josh had just said " Hello my friend. " Gale smiled at him, and closed the book. He wasn't going to be rude and not talk to Josh when was seemingly wanting to talk. "Hey Josh." He replied. He was decent friends with the older boy, but Gale considered himself pretty much chill with everybody. Josh was a fire, and probably one of the only fires he could stand. Though Josh was different, while his blood tied him to the very element he hated, his heart was with the waters and the earths. It wasn't something that happened very often. In fact, was quite rare. He didn't know Josh very well, but he knew him well enough to know he was different than the rest of them - or most of them, anyways.
"Nah, was just reading some stuff. It's cool." He nodded to the chair across from him, motioning for Josh to sit down. He was too nice to tell Josh to leave. Plus, if he was going to have company, better it be Josh than somebody like Rafael. The side of his face still stung from the punch to the face he received, and his bruise was turning many shades of purple and black. He tried not to draw too much attention towards it. He took the small stack of books and set them on the ground next to him, so to let Josh know he had his attention now. "So what are you doing up here tonight?" He asked, raising an eyebrow. Usually people didn't come to the library looking for conversation but hey, who was he to judge? Some loved to talk and converse where ever they went.

Ironically enough, Joshua was not one of those people who enjoyed conversation as much as the Waters. He was actually a pretty quiet guy, content to sit in silence with his friends and simply enjoy the companionship rather than craving dialogue. If he understood that his friends wanted to chat with him then he was often willing to try and shirk his solitary and silent nature for a while but for the most part, Josh was unchanging. He got rare desires to do something other than sit by himself, though, and it was one of those desires that had led him over to Gale. At least the guy was receptive enough, not questioning the words. He wondered whether it was due to an understanding of them (possible) or an assumption that they meant something friendly and a desire to move on without asking (also possible). He didn't question him about it. "Cool." As the books were lying in plain sight he glanced at the covers to see what it was that he was reading. "Studying your element, eh? Can't say I blame you. Exams'll be in a few months from now, best to be prepared." His mind was still on the end of the year tests despite abandoning his studies to chat with Gale and his thoughts likely wouldn't leave exams until they were over and done with. Then he'd be fretting about next years exams. Maintaining a perfect or even near-perfect GPA was a downright pain in the ass sometimes.
The question made him smirk a little. Joshua could often be a smart ass around his friends and today was no exception as he replied without pause, "Ah, nothing much, just plotting world domination and practising for a hockey game." Joshua could not actually play hockey but that was not the point. Though he'd said the words with a completely serious tone and expression they were mere lead-in for what he said next. "Reading, man, studying, what else would I be doing in a library?" It wasn't an ideal place for teenagers to hide amongst the bookshelves and make out or do any other couple-related things because it was a quiet place. Far too quiet for fooling around. Besides, he was alone. The only thing he ever did here other than studying or researching on his computer was unwinding after a long day when he had a headache. It was the ideal place for people that wanted peace and quiet and he'd hole up in the library after taking some Advil to try and wait for the pills to take effect. Even then, though, he usually had a book in hand. "I've been studying so long the words are starting to blend together, though, and that's not a good sign." He was kidding, of course, exaggerating for the sake of conversation.
The fact that Gale was injured had not escaped Joshua's notice and though he'd tried to ignore it and keep his attention on the conversation, the aspiring doctor within him was begging him to ask. He was not nosy, would not pry, he was merely concerned about the well-being of someone he considered a new friend. He'd known Gale long enough that they'd passed that incredibly awkward acquaintance stage that Josh seemed to force everyone to go through before he started to relax around him but they were not unbelievably close. Still, it was enough that he cared. "That looks pretty nasty, dude, you alright?" That was the thing about Joshua—he did not ask what had happened. He was not going to pry into Gale's personal life by demanding to know who had fought him and how he'd sustained the injury because, as he saw it, Gale had the right to keep that to himself. He was merely checking up on him. That was what Joshua did for friends.

Gale had almost forgotten about the end of the year exams. They crept up on him every year, but being a straight A student, he had to keep up on them. Studying, anyways. He was good at memorizing, and every year aced his exams. He was a good student, and his teachers usually liked him. His only bad habit was he tended to talk a lot in class, but he always got his work done. He didn't consider himself to be nerdy, not too much anyways. He had friends, and an avid social life, but his school work was just as important to him. He wanted to go to collage, and master the element of Water. He wanted to be more advanced than those in his class, and reading and studying was the best way to do that right? "Right, gotta keep up those good grades. Don't wanna flunk out in my eleventh grade year." He laughed a little, brushing his fingers back through his hair and leaning back in the chair a little.
Gale wasn't the best with using sarcasm, but he understood it. He knew Josh well though to know the boy was sarcastic. It was not a bad trait, unless you used it around somebody who was easily offended. That, Gale was not. He was down on himself a lot, so it was hard to offend somebody who already excepted the lesser facts of life. He just smirked a little at Josh's comment, about to say something when Josh changed his answer. Gale laughed quietly, shaking his head a little. "Right, I guess that was kind of a dumb question, huh?" He quirked an eyebrow up towards Josh. Gale was smart, but he was more book smart than common sense smart, anyways. "Might be time for a break then, yeah?" He said, with a smile. "But I guess that is what you are doing right now."
Gale had been used to people asking him all day about the bruise on his face. As the water leader, he was supposed to be solving issues, not getting involved in them. Though he didn't really fight back with Raf (He wished he would have), it still wasn't the best thing to be doing in your newly elected position. "Yeah, I'm fine." Gale said, waving it off like it was no big deal. He was good at that. He always put everybody elses wants and needs above his own. And always told people what they wanted to hear. It was just something he was good at, because he hated seeing people upset in any way. "I actually think this is a good look for me. I was told it brings out character." He laughed quietly, turning his head a little as if to let Josh get a better look at it. He made a joke out of everything. Es specially things that where painful.

Joshua smirked at Gale, a knowing glint in his gray gaze. "Like you'd flunk out." Joshua was not oblivious to the fact that the Water elemental was smart. The fact that they knew one another mostly from hanging around in libraries was a give away in and of itself. Joshua was also intelligent, it was something that they had in common. Like-minded people were either people he respected or absolutely hated. Those that were pretentious in their intelligence could, in his opinion, shove their random facts and intellectual bullshit up their ass. There was no need to be a dick about it. "Feeling confident?" No matter how smart a person was, it was possible that they could suffer from pre-exam jitters. "We've still got a ways to go, mind, but..." Joshua trailed off, shrugged. The more he studied for the current material now, the less he'd need to cram for the exams when the time came for them. That was how his logic worked, at any rate. He thanked his luck for his good memory or keeping everything he'd learned in both majors stored in his brain would be more than just a little difficult.
He merely chuckled quietly when Gale realised how silly the question sounded in retrospect, not bothered by it at all. It was a general conversation question and for all Joshua knew he had been wanting for a specific answer such as what Joshua was studying for. The Fire graduate was rarely ever specific, though, and he never offered much more than he was asked, if that. Secretive people tended to stay as such. It was force of habit above all else by this point. He was a bit surprised when Gale made a joke out of his injury but then reminded himself that not everyone was like him. Joshua would stare someone down if they so much as thought about joking about his injuries so it was baffling that someone else would crack jokes about their own. His scars were a sensitive subject for him. "Yeah, chicks dig bad boys. Except you're not really all that bad a guy, so you're shit outta luck buddy." He was kidding of course. Gale wasn't a bad guy, that much was true, but Josh didn't doubt his ability to find a girlfriend. If Josh had, well, hey, anything was possible.
The injury made him think of the current war, which Water wasn't a part of anyway, but that thought led him to something a little more relevant. "Oh, hey, I heard about your position," he said, lifting his chin slightly as the thought occurred to him. "Congrats, man. How's it working out for you?" It was almost funny to consider that Joshua had been a leader himself back in his senior year... of Gale's opposing element. He figured the Water elemental wouldn't know about that, though, since he started high school when Joshua had started college. Not that he'd deny if it somehow came up in conversation. Denial of something that could easily be proved true was sheer stupidity. He didn't talk about the dark parts of his past involving the gang because not a lot of people knew about it but a lot of the Fires knew about his former position, as well as some of the older students. "You think you'll be able to keep the position in the new year?" Some did, some didn't. It all depended on how active a role the elemental took in leadership and whether or not their element approved.

Gale laughed quietly at Josh's comment. "You know me so well." He joked. It was true though, Gale wasn't the type of student to even ponder flunking out. He tried too hard in school. Even in the subjects he didn't excell in, he was pretty sure he would get a good grade based solely on effort. That was just the kind of person he was. Once he dedicated himself to something, it was impossible to get him off of it. Gale shrugged his shoulders a little at Josh's question. "I'm pretty confident. I typically do well on the year end exams. But you never know." He looked up at him and smiled a little. Gale had a bit more distractions now than he had in previous years, so he wasn't sure. The fact that it was driving him crazy that he always seemed to be thinking about Sandra, even though he told himself it was just a small, innocent crush.
It was hard though, when you had been best friends with somebody for so long. He wasn't sure Sandy felt the same way, so he never said anything to her about it. Plus, he could control himself. He was sure most guys felt that way about their female best friends. He was pretty close with Sandy's older brother as well, Matt. It was just how he was, he was friends with everybody. Though he wasn't exactly the best with females. He had a few girlfriends before, he just wasn't the most romantic person in the world. It was almost irritating, how he just couldn't seem to figure things out. He figured he would eventually, just maybe not right now. "I don't know man, I think I'm digging this whole getting into fights thing. I think the bruises make me look pretty bad ass." He joked again. He hoped Josh knew he was joking. He really hated getting into fights, and didn't want to make a habit of it.
Gale had heard about the war going on at the school. The war between the fires and earths. He was thankful not to be part of it, but he still felt almost obligated. He had many friends that where earth students, and being a leader, he felt that he should be helping, in some way shape or form. He hadn't gotten involved though, and wanted to stay uninvolved for as long as possible. "Thanks, man." Gale started, smiling at Josh. "It's going pretty well. At least, I think I'm doing a good job." He shrugged his shoulders a little bit. He wasn't sure what the others of his house thought of him. He hoped that they approoved. Everybody still gave him friendly looks and smiles, nobody seemed to detest the fact that he was the leader of the element. "Well I hope so. I guess as long as I don't fuck things up too bad I shouldn't have a problem keeping my spot, yeah? " He raised an eyebrow, smirking a little. He really didn't think he was doing a bad job, and wasn't planning on it. In fact he was only planning on getting better. He was still getting the hang of being the leader, but it was coming along easier to him. It was almost natural.

Though he certainly understood that Gale was joking around when it came to his injuries, Joshua still found it hard to wrap his head around. He tended to base a lot of things off of how he saw the world, which wasn't the best tactic in dealing with people, so he sometimes took a while in growing comfortable with certain ideas. "Well, did you give back as good as you got, at least?" Joshua was not clear on whether or not Gale was much of a fighter. Most of what he knew of the other boy was from hanging out like this in the library, occasionally studying together when they needed company and focus at the same time. He did not know him like he knew his closer friends and so his many traits were things Josh could still be ignorant of after all this time. Pacifism was another thing that Josh didn't really get. How could someone be so kind to another person that they'd feel bad about hurting them even if the other attacked first? Joshua was aggressive and volatile by nature and with his terrible temper, he got into a lot of fights. Since he didn't have as much of a connection with other people as some, he couldn't quite relate. He respected it, but he didn't understand.
It had been a while since he held his own position at the Academy but Joshua's memory was quite good and so he reminisced for a moment when Gale mentioned doing a good job. They seemed to like me. At least, they liked me way better then than they do now. His lips twitched into a smirk for a moment but he did not explain the gesture as he brought his attention back to the conversation with Gale. "Well I don't know how it works with you Earths but the Fires always make it clear as day when they don't approve." They made it clear by either threatening to boot you out of your position or actually doing so, no questions asked. His element was a cutthroat one indeed. He supposed the Waters might be nicer but he wouldn't know for sure. "So I imagine they'll let you know somehow." The Waters might not have been as inherently vicious as the Fires but from what he'd seen they were not afraid to voice their opinions. Bubbly and outgoing did not necessarily mean kind and unwilling to put someone down if they thought a leader wasn't doing their job well enough. "Finding it hard yet or is it still too new a position to judge?" He was curious. Natural leadership skills mean Josh had no problem with leading but it wasn't the same for everyone.
Josh shrugged, unable to give a firm answer to that. "Wouldn't know. I never had to fight for mine." He realised as he said this that he was revealing his prior position but it didn't bother him. He wasn't ashamed. "Eh, I figure as long as you don't land them in a lot of trouble you might be alright. Provided they don't find someone better for the job." All elements seemed to chose their leaders based on different criteria. Fires liked those that were violent and intimidating to uphold their position of fear and aggression at the school, whereas Earths liked someone pacifistic but with enough backbone to stand up for the element. Waters valued charisma and the Thunders, from what he'd seen, liked someone crafty. Winds made sure that their leaders were not biased to one side or another, tried to keep the peace and avoid any wars. Joshua had fit the bill for the Fire leader position quite nicely, for before he'd joined the Earths and Waters and calmed his temper a little he had definitely been more than willing to start fights with the other elements. No shame.

Gale was mostly a pacifist. He didn't pick fights for no reason, but he felt that was slowly starting to change. He wasn't ever going to be the kind of guy to go out of his way to pick fights, but he was going to stand up for himself in the very least. He was tired of ending up the underdog. At this rate, one of the earth kids could try to beat him up and probably win. He just hated hurting people, seeing anybody hurting in any way. It was almost selfless on his part, as he didn't really care what happened to himself. He didn't look out for the good of himself. That wasn't a good habit, right? Gale laughed a little bit, at Josh's comment, taking it sarcastically. "Oh yeah, he got it real good." He laughed a little, before shaking his head. "Nah, man. I'm not a fighter." He just shrugged his shoulders. "That kid'll get whats coming to him soon enough. Rafael just think's he's a bad ass but, everybody has there weak points right?" he glanced up at Josh, with one eyebrow raised. It was true, everybody did. He knew he could take Rafael soon enough. He started questioning to himself if Josh perhaps knew him, but wasn't going to outwardly ask him.
While this position was new to Gale, it was coming along pretty easily. His house respected him, and nobody outwardly hated him. Gale wasn't a very easily hatable person at it was. He was too friendly and outgoing to be hated by too many people. At least those in his own house anyways. He had a way of being able to make people laugh, and most people enjoyed his company. There where those who he was pretty certain he just annoyed the crap out of, but that was okay too. Not everybody could like him. He had his best friends, his close friends, that was all he needed. He did not expect everybody to like him. "Well then I guess it's a good thing nobody has told me they hate me yet." He said with a small chuckle. Gale wasn't super worried about these things, as he knew the people of his element trusted him. "Well it's still pretty new but I'm finding it pretty easy so far." He shrugged and smiled a bit. "Haven't got anybody giving me any serious trouble yet."
Gale imagined soon enough he was going to find some trouble makers. He had the back bone to tell them what to do, and wasn't going to let people walk all over him. With this position he had taken on the role of a leader, and though it wasn't natural to him, he was getting the hang of it pretty dang quickly. None of the waters had given him much of a chance to act like the big boss yet, but he still had to keep everything neat and clean and orderly. Pulling pranks in the common room was the worst, because he had to clean most of it up. He could make them do it, and sometimes he did, but for the most part he just took care of it. He didn't mind stuff like that. "Oh? You where a leader too, then?" He raised an eyebrow. He hadn't heard of that. He knew Josh was a traitor to the fires, but didn't know he was thier leader. "Well, I guess I'll just have to make sure they stay liking me then." He laughed, running his fingers back through his hair. There probably where people better for the job, but they chose him. "So man, what's going on with you outside of .. you know.. school work?" He looked up at the older boy. He didn't really know much about him, despite their little chats.

At mention of Rafael, something dark flashed in Joshua's gray eyes, something angry. He really did not like the Thunder elemental, the guy was nothing but bad news and his very name made the Fire bristle with rage. Especially since he'd fucked with Nell and that was never okay in Joshua's book. "Ugh, I hate that kid." He figured they were thinking of the same Rafael, after all, it wasn't a very common name. The boy may have been his fiancée's half brother but that didn't change fuck all. If anything, it only made him hate the guy more. Siblings shouldn't act like that. His rocky relationship with Bryce, ironically, did not even cross his mind. "I hope he walks into a fucking meat grinder by mistake. It'd serve him right." Alright, so perhaps that was a little bit harsh. Josh wasn't as serious as he sounded at least. He didn't wish death on anyone, not even on his own brother. That wasn't what people did, unless of course they were sociopaths and serial killers. Those people ended up in jail, though, and that was not the kind of place Joshua wanted to spend the rest of his life in. "The fuck was he messing with you for, fun?" It wouldn't really surprise Josh. Wonder what element the prick's in? Hopefully Fire or Thunder. Then Josh could hate him without restraint.
He cracked a sort of half-smile and nodded. "Yeah, grade twelve. I think I did pretty good." Unfortunately, what the Fires considered 'pretty good' was probably 'pretty fucking bad' in the eyes of his current allies. Maybe Josh shouldn't have been speaking so freely but his lack of shame had successfully removed most of his filter from the conversation. Why should he care what people thought? Everyone made mistakes. Except Joshua didn't see his former leadership as a mistake, he saw it as an experience. "I imagine the pranks are a nightmare. It's the fighting with Fires. You can't ban temper problems, it just doesn't work that way." It was easy for someone of the opposite alliance to insist that the Fires had poor control over their element but in reality, there was no controlling something as deeply ingrained as anger issues. Joshua would know, he was one. All you could do was try to discourage the fights that hadn't happened out of rage, the ones that happened just because a group of Fires got bored and decided the Earths made good kindling.
What was going on in his life? Joshua had to think about that one a moment, lapsing into a contemplative silence. He wasn't very good at the whole 'sharing' deal. He tried to avoid divulging too much information about himself and apart from that, his life seemed pretty average to him. "Uh... went to Spain over the summer. Got a new job, too, at a retirement home pretty close to the hospital." In the library his interest in Biology was pretty evident due to the books he read so he'd told Gale in a previous conversation that he was wanting to become a doctor. A physician-scientist, to be exact, but Josh usually didn't bother specifying this. It got weird looks from people who didn't understand. "Apart from that, though, it's been pretty much the same." He'd also, you know, inherited a mansion, but he left that specific detail out of the conversation. Did Gale even know of his wealth? Josh hardly ever mentioned it outright. Anyone who saw his Lamborghini or his house could not doubt it, or if they knew the logos of the designer clothing that he often wore. Apart from that he was relatively low-key about it. "What about you?" It seemed only fair to return the question.

There where a lot of people who didn't know Rafael, at least those who asked about him anyways. Josh seemed to know him as he expressed how much he hated him. Gale was one of those eternal optimists who said he didn't hate anybody. "Yeah. He's not the best person in the world to be around." He snorted a little. He always tried to see the good in everybody, but Rafael was one of those people he wasn't sure had a good side. Maybe someday, years and years down the road, he would realize that being an asshole to everybody wasn't getting him anywhere in life. He could hope that, anyways. "It wouldn't be an accident if you know, somebody pushed him." Gale said with a shrug. He tried to keep a serious look on his face, but the smirk that crept over his lips made it obvious that he was joking. He wouldn't wish anybody to die, even somebody like that, but it was fun to see the pictures in his head.
"Fun seems to be a good word for it." He said, nodding his head a little bit. "I didn't do anything to piss him off, at least I don't think so. We just don't really get along." Again, Gale shrugged. He didn't want to draw too much attention to the fact that he was plotting his revenge for the boy. It was against his character, but Gale needed to. His pride was at stake. Everybody knew, especially for those of the male gender, pride was a very important thing. Gale was very prideful, but not cocky. At least not all the time. He could be a bit of a sarcastic ass at times, but it was all in good fun. Not Rafael's type of fun. "Well I'm sure you did." Gale replied, offering him a smile. He couldn't see Josh being a horrible leader. He seemed too good of a guy to be awful at it. But of course, he was a traitor for some reason. "Oh yeah that must of been awful. Fortunately enough for me, everybody seems to be pretty level headed." And it was true. All the waters where pretty level headed. None of them where too bad. At least, not around him anyways.
The silence that came after his question almost made Gale wish he hadn't asked it. Some people where uncomfortable talking about themselves. Him and Josh where not exactly good enough friends to know every little detail about the others life. So he was still learning what to say and what not to say around Josh. He was like that with quite a few people, but Josh was the only one he was around now. When he started talking, Gale took a deep breath, almost in relief. " Spain, huh? That must have been exciting. I've never even been out of canada." Gale chuckled a little, shaking his head. It was true, he hadn't been. It made him sound rather lame he thought. "One step closer to your goal then, bro. Keep it up." He nodded his head, with a small smile. Josh seemed to have his life pretty together. Gale's wasn't bad, either. He just felt he needed a little more excitement. "Nothing real exciting, I guess. School, girl's, shit like that." He smiled a little, shaking his head. One certain girl really but... He sighed a little, and folded his arms across his chest, tilting back in his chair a little. He balenced himself, making sure he didn't fall backwards. "I really need a life." He chuckled a little bit, glancing down at the table.

Joshua snorted and rolled his eyes. "I'd do it myself but murder happens to be illegal." He wasn't any more serious than Gale was, though he sounded it and looked a lot more straight-faced than his friend. Was Josh the type of person anyone would assume was capable of murder? It all depended on who was talking to him, really. He had a reputation for violence around the Academy and he spoke in gravely serious tones. At the same time, he had self-preservation. Jail was not the place to be, especially not for someone who wanted to be a doctor. Physician-scientist, really, but a doctor all the same. Murder meant jail-for-life and not just two years and a wrist-slap. No thank you. "I don't know how anyone can stand him." Josh wasn't even exaggerating. Joshua was temperamental and violent at times but he was an alright guy amongst the people he cared for. Rafael beat his girlfriend. How must he treat his friends? Josh already knew how he treated Nell and she was family. She's my family, too. He felt protective, not on a territorial level but from a lover's standpoint. And what Raf had done to Gale? It angered him, though thankfully not enough to track the Thunder elemental down and pound his face in. Maybe if the guy had been standing around, sure, but it was for the best that he wasn't. Joshua didn't need to be kicked out of the Academy any more than he needed to be arrested, thank you very much.
A lot of people had never journeyed outside the city or town they were born in, let alone outside the country entirely. Gale's news did not shock Joshua and so he just twitched his lips. "Yeah, went with Nell. Saw a bullfight and everything." Bullfights seemed a rather strange attraction for a vegetarian but Joshua had never pretended to be all hardcore and gung-ho about animal rights. He didn't believe his word against the word of thousands of Spaniards that loved the sport would do good, anyway. Joshua was relatively calm as long as someone didn't start kicking a dog around in front of him. That wasn't okay no matter who you were. "Once I graduate it's eight years of medical school and then freedom." He laughed, because eight years of medical school was a long time for most people to wait. He'd be close to his thirties by the time he was actually pushed out into the word of doctors and scientists, researching and working on patients of his very own. He was patient, thankfully, and so eight years was only a span of time for him. It didn't make him feel daunted, it only encouraged him to keep working harder. He'd get there in the end. After all, it had been twelve years since he'd first decided that he wanted to become a doctor. Time never stops.
Joshua raised his eyebrows at Gale and smirked, not missing the mention of girls in his non-committal statement. "Girls, eh?" Joshua wasn't the type of person that participated in a whole lot of gossip but if he liked someone as a friend then he would definitely be curious about how their life was going. That's what friends are there for, right? To pester you endlessly about your love life? Joshua's gray eyes glittered with humour. "Got a girlfriend over the break, or...?" Girls, he said, thought Joshua. Plural. Multiple girlfriends, perhaps? He'd never taken Gale to be much of a player, not like him and Devin had been (and Devin was again), but then again, he didn't know the boy well. "You've got one, bro. You can breath, can't ya? I'm pretty sure driving an axe into your skull would fix the problem, but..." He grinned and it was obvious that he was just messing with Gale.

Gale was impressed by how straight faced and serious Josh could sound. Gale couldn't take anything serious, life was a big joke to him. He had a rather sarcastic sense of humor, but he loved to see people laugh and smile. "Such a shame isn't it?" He laughed a little and shook his head. "I think I've watched enough crime show's though. I could probably get away with it." He said, without a smile crossing his face as he shrugged his shoulders. He really did not like Rafael, and Josh's shared hatred for the boy almost made him happy. He wasn't hateful or vengeful, but he certainly didn't wish anything good to happen to Raf. "Yeah man. I agree. He's an asshole. I'm surprised nobody has tried to like, drown him yet." He snorted a bit in disgust. It was irritating, sickening how somebody like him even managed to have friends.
Travelling had always been something that Gale was interested in. He wanted to travel the world, to see new things. He wanted to swim in all of the seven sea's. Swimming was one of his main passions, as was anticipated with many water students. "A bullfight?" He said, raising an eyebrow. "Wow, that sounds exciting." He chuckled a little. Spain would be a fun place to go to, he assumed. Gale always was interested in things like that. He didn't really see it as animal cruelty. Of course, he liked animals, but he also understood the entertainment purpose of bullfights, and rodeos, and things of that nature. "Damn, Josh." He started, shaking his head a little. "That's a lot of dedication, man." It really was. Eight years past graduation really was a lot of dedication. Not many people stuck to that. That was probably why doctors had to be so highly qualified. "I'm not sure what I want to pursue yet, really. In college. Just haven't really figured out what my passions are yet, I guess. I've considered marine biology, though." He said, smiling a bit. That was one of the things he was really considering going into. He thought it would be fun.
Player was certainly not a word to describe Gale. He's 'girls' comment was almost futile, because it was not really true. More like him crushing shamelessly on his best friend. "Yeah..." Gale said, rubbing the back of his neck a little as he looked down. He didn't have the courage to tell her how he felt, so he had to be happy with just being best friends for now. She really was his best friend. "Eh, no, not really." He shook his head, a small smile creeping across his face. "Guess I should have been more clear. She isn't really interested, I don't think, but... there's no harm in hoping right?" He chuckled a little nervously again and looked down. He sounded so juvenile. He let out a bit of a sigh and shook his head before looking back up at Josh and spoke. "Well, If I hold my breath I wouldn't be breathing. And I think I will pass on that axe thing. But thanks for the offer man." He said, laughing a little and winking at him. He put his arms behind his head and leaned back in the chair, letting his gaze drift back up to the ceiling. "So, man. This might be a bit personal but..." He paused for a moment, thinking of how to word it. How did you... when did you know... that Nell was like.. you know.. the right one?" He avoided eye contact for the time being, but Josh was the best person to ask this he thought. He and Nell where a wonderful couple, and they had been together for quite a while. He wasn't the most romantic guy in the world, but he wanted something like that. Someday.

Drown him? Of all the things Gale could have said, that was probably the one that had the most profound effect on Joshua, at least internally. He did not show any outward discomfort but on the inside he was thinking about how scary it felt when the water started to flood your lungs, and you couldn't breathe, and you couldn't swim to the surface, and—stop thinking, seriously. His thoughts often got carried away with themselves. Josh was afraid of deep water, afraid of drowning, but he wasn't drowning nor was he in immediate danger of doing so. There was no reason to get himself all worked up. He wouldn't mind if Rafael, say, fell off the cliffs and into the lake. As long as he conveniently forgot how to swim or didn't know how in the first place. "Yeah, it was pretty great. Shame we didn't arrive in time for the betting." They'd took bets against one another, though, and that had been fun as well. Joshua enjoyed gambling and it was a bit of a dangerous thing with someone with money to waste to be enjoying, honestly. "Dedication is my middle name. Well, not really. It does start with D, though." He doubted Gale knew his middle name, people usually didn't know that kind of thing about their friends unless it came up in conversation, but he didn't bother telling him. Did it really matter? He didn't think so, it wasn't relevant to the conversation. He was proud of his middle name. Donovan, like his father, after his father.
At first Joshua thought that marine biology was a rather random thing to be pursuing but then he reminded himself that his not liking the subject did not mean that other people felt the same way. He nodded, cracked a half-smile. "Sounds fun." As a part of his major he had to take some plant and animal biology as well and it was pretty fun as well, but that wasn't Joshua's calling. He wanted to work on human beings, else he'd have become a vet. He listened as Gale explained the 'girls' comment, not saying anything at first. Josh supposed it sucked pretty bad to have someone you liked not return that interest. He'd never had that problem. A few crushes over the years, sure, but they'd been harmless and he'd easily ignored them. Then there had been girls that he'd just found attractive for their looks and so he hadn't wanted to pursue a relationship. Josh was guessing that Gale had an actual interest in this girl who'd suddenly become the centre of their conversation. "Nah, no harm in that. I wouldn't go for it unless you thought she liked you back, though." He didn't know whether Gale was friends with this chick or a total stranger but rejection still sucked. Joshua hadn't been sure what Nell thought of him when he'd asked her out. The Fire graduate was confident and he'd acted on impulse. Lucky for him it worked out.
He was, nevertheless, still a little worried when Gale requested to ask him something. "Uh... shoot?" He didn't really like personal questions and so his walls immediately went up in preparation of defending himself or making some sort of lie up. He didn't like to talk about personal matters. When Nell was mentioned, though, he blinked his surprise. Why does everyone think I have the answers? It wouldn't be the first time someone questioned his relationship with Nell and it probably wasn't going to be the last. It was an honour, really, that his friends trusted him for advice, but he was never sure what to say. So he stuck with honesty and shrugged. "I didn't." He wasn't psychic, hadn't been able to predict when he'd asked the girl out that they'd be engaged to be married about a year later. He'd thought it might not work out. A lot of relationships weren't meant to be. He'd given it a shot and they'd got there in the end. "I love her and she feels the same way. Might not be fate or anything but it works for us." That was all he really knew about their relationship. "Took a few months of dating her to be sure what I felt, though. Love at first sight isn't what I'd call it." He'd loved her first as a friend and then thought there might be a chance at something more, so he'd taken it. "Sorry I can't give ya anything better than that, bro, but..." Nope. Nothing.
