The evening was winding down peacefully. Gale had a very rough start to his day. Earlier that day he had gotten in a fight with Rafael, and had a nice bruise on the side of his face to prove it. People had been asking him the majority of the evening where it came from, but he wasn't about to let everybody he got his ass beat by a lower classmen. He was not a skilled fighter, and that was something he was working on. He was not proud of it, and he wanted to be able to hold his own in a fight. He didn't want to be brought to his knee's each time somebody forced an attack on him. He wanted to be able to hold his own. He didn't want to look weak in front of everybody. Rafael was a jerk, and someday he was going to show him up. He was fully determined that someday he was going to bring the boy to his knee's someday.
Gale had made his way back to the common room for the evening, sprawled out on an unoccupied couch. There where a few people sitting around him in some of the chairs, and they where chatting about meaningless things. Everybody seemed pretty chill tonight, but people kept giving him sideways glances at the bruise that covered half his face. He didn't have a way to hide it, so he just embraced it. He hadn't iced it, so it was very purple and right there. He was in a slightly dampered mood, although the boy was never in too awful of a mood. Getting your ass kicked and a lot of people knowing about it wasn't exactly fun. He was just glad he got the feeling back in his limbs. Electricity surging through every muscle in your body wasn't the best feeling in the world.
Gale wasn't feeling too particularly chatty that evening, at least not with the people in the room. He didn't see one of his very best friends - Sandy - there. If she had been, he wouldn't hesitate to spend the night chatting with her. He liked to talk with everybody, but even when he wasn't in a great mood she always brought a smile to his face. He brought his knee's up towards his chest, and laid a book out that he had gotten from the library. He had a bit of a throbbing head ache, and had half a mind to go to sleep, but decided against that. Staying up for a while wouldn't be bad. Somebody walked in, one of the older males, and asked him what happened to his face, and Gale simply just laughed. "Nothing man. It's no big deal." He sighed, looking back to his book, though he wasn't really paying attention to it. His whole side of his face was still throbbing.

Sandra had just woken up from a wonderful nap, a proper one in her actual bed rather than an accidental one halfway through class for once. She'd gone straight to her dorm after class had ended, and had sat around "reading" (or looking at, rather) one of her textbooks -- she couldn't even remember which one now -- but had fallen asleep after some time. It was a long nap too, as she hadn't really slept well the night before (much to her dismay), and so when she woke up several hours later and looked at the clock, she realized that she'd actually already missed dinner. It had been such a nice nap, really -- comfortable and it was quiet all around her, because even the chatty Waters often took the opportunity to calm down and relax occasionally -- so all in all it wasn't surprising that she'd stayed in bed for so long... but really, in retrospect, it probably hadn't been the greatest of ideas.
Not that Sandra cared about what was the smart thing to do, of course, at least in respect to naps. A nap is a nap is a nap.
She didn't actually sleep with her teddy bear, not in the way that she would have as a child clutching onto it, but he, Roosevelt, was waiting faithfully on her bedside table when she awoke. She rolled out of bed, still in her pyjamas (she had actually gotten dressed this morning, but had gotten undressed again promptly for her nap) and picked him up, rubbing the sleep from her eyes with her other hand. Naps were always nice. She shoved her feet into big puppy slippers (which were much better than bunny slippers) and stretched briefly before heading out the door and into the Common Room, from where she could hear the vague jumble of conversation. They had gotten chattier since she'd fallen asleep earlier, she thought, but this was unsurprising. She passed several people on the way, smiling and saying hello as she went -- none of them seemed at all surprised that she looked like she'd just gotten up, which was just a mark of how well most around these parts knew her -- but didn't stop to talk, instead continuing on.
She looked around the Common Room once she got there, but it didn't seem that any of her closer friends were around at the time being... That was a shame; she had been hoping that she would be able to find someone to drag along with her to find food, seeing as she'd missed dinner. (Sleep was the greatest thing in the world, Sandra was pretty sure, but food did come a very close second.) Apparently she'd overlooked someone though, because on her second inspection of the room she did spot someone sitting on his own some ways away from her, and luckily for Sandra, said person turned out to be Gale. (Or, at least, it was the back of Gale's head, but she was pretty sure she could recognize it.) She smiled triumphantly. Gale had to be one of, if not the only one, of her best friends here at the Academy and quite possibly anywhere, and on top of that, she was sure he'd be willing to come with her on her adventure to find food. "Ga~ale," she sang as she approached, grinning and leaping over the couch that he was sitting on. She landed neatly beside him and didn't hesitate in leaning over and resting her head on his shoulder, her eyes closing briefly although she wasn't really tired. "What are you up -- what happened to your face?" Once she'd straightened up and could actually see him properly, it came out as a bit of a squeak as she spotted the bruise on his face. Or, rather, all over his face, she corrected herself in her head, eyes wide as she couldn't help but gape at him.

Gale knew most of the people in his house, and they all knew him. As the leader of the water elementals, it was kind of important that people know him. If they didn't, he wouldn't be a very good leader, would he? He wasn't sure why he had been newly appointed as leader, but he embraced it. He could only do the best that he could. He was friendly, and dead dedicated to his house. He didn't associate much with those of the rival houses. He didn't hate people, at least wouldn't admit, but he had a strong dislike for fire's and thunders. Personality didn't matter much to him. They where raw power that he just couldn't match. He knew that when he came face to face with Rafael. He needed to learn to harness his power, his strength, the way they could. To find a way to make it dangerous.
Gale wasn't really paying much until he heard a familiar voice practically sing his name. He turned to look just as his best friend - Sandy - landed beside him on the couch. It always brought a smile to his face to see her. He figured she was probably sleeping, she always seemed to be napping somewhere. He was guilty of doing the same thing much of the time, but he wasn't one to judge. " San~dy" He sang back, mocking her a little bit. The boy couldn't help but laugh a little bit as she leaned into him, in turn, he put his arm around her shoulders. It felt natural, but Gale wasn't great with girls anyways. While he had always been harboring a bit of a crush on Sandy, he wouldn't tell her. That would ruin thier perfect friendship, and God knows he couldn't stand to lose her as a friend.
She was the one person that he could tell absolutely anything to. He was even secretive to his mother, mostly because he didn't want to hurt her. When Sandy asked what happened to his face, his smile faded a little bit. Guess I could have known she was going to ask. He cleared his throat and pulled his arm out from around her and rubbed the back of his neck. " Well, you see..." He started, smiling at her a little sheepishly, just enough so it didn't hurt. "I sort of got in a fight with one of the thunder students." He looked at her for a minute. She would probably be surprised, because Gale wasn't one to fight at all. "But it's okay, you should see the other guy." He joked, although it was a lie. He hadn't done anything to Rafael except for get him wet - which just backfired on him in the long run. "But, enough about me. How are you doing today?"

Sandra didn't mind the slight mocking, was used to it and did it pretty frequently to other friends as well (maybe for other reasons, though; Sandy's voice was all her own). She let him put his arm over her shoulders -- it felt pretty natural, but then again Sandra kind of cuddled up to whoever would let her. Physical contact wasn't a problem. She did note, though, now she had pulled away to a tiny bit of a distance, that his smile had faltered once she'd asked about, er, the enormous bruise on his face. Seriously, it was pretty hard to miss -- she didn't know how he might have thought that she wouldn't have seen it. It definitely hadn't been there when she'd seen him just a few hours ago in class, either... No, this was definitely very new, judging not only by her memory but also the bruise itself. She was no doctor, and no expert when it came to injuries at all (she tried to avoid legitimate fighting if she could) but its colour indicated relative freshness.
She listened to his explanation with a frown, for once not returning his smile, sheepish as it was. So it really was a fight. That wasn't something that she'd seen coming, not by a long shot, at least not in the sense that Gale would have gotten in a fight -- shown the bruise, though, she was pretty sure there were few other things that could have worked. "Gale!" she squeaked, but this time when she said his name it wasn't happy and sing-songy at all. Her hunger was forgotten for the time being as she stared at him, eyes wide. "Who was it?" she demanded to know, as if she would go put a stop to this, but this was extremely unlikely. She wasn't a fighter. Neither, she had thought, was Gale. He was their leader! He was supposed to be resolving the conflicts, not getting into fistfights! He was a big softie, too -- there was no way "the other guy" had gotten roughed up any more badly than he himself had. "Gale..." she repeated once more, biting her lip, this time sounding sad rather than panicked. She just worried about her friends, especially when they were getting into fights that resulted in huge, purple bruises on their faces. Yeah, those were special moments to worry.
She didn't answer his question for a long moment, thinking that whatever problems she had were significantly less important than Gale's face was right now. "I'm okay," she said, uncharacteristically quiet as she pouted, after some hesitation. "I wanted to see if you wanted to go find some food or something, but..." She reached her hand up as if to touch the bruise on his face, but she decided that would be a bad idea in case it hurt (which it almost positively did, she was sure), and dropped it instead. "Not enough about you. You okay?" she asked softly.

Sandy was his best friend, so Gale certainly didn't like when she was upset. As friends usually where, she was obviously concerned for his well being. Getting in fights wasn't something he did too often. In fact, never - on purpose anyways. He was an easy going guy, but he wasn't a coward. He actually thought he was very brave in his own way. Just because he didn't like heights and didn't like getting in fights didn't make him a coward. You didn't have to be a bad ass to be considered brave, right? He knew getting into fights wasn't the best thing to do, especially if he got caught. He didn't want to lose his position as leader. "Sandy, Sandy, It's fine." He said, trying to soothe her. He didn't want her to worry. "It was .. just one of the thunder students. But really, it's not big deal, I took care of it."
There was a rather long moment of silence that was almost nerve wracking. Gale hated silence in any way, and especially just sitting here made him nervous. The silence didn't last for long, when Sandy finally spoke. He sighed a little bit, and looked at her. As she moved her hand up towards his face, he flinched a little - as a habit, but he didn't pull away. Then she dropped her hand. His blue eyes lingered on her for a moment, and his voice was soft. Comforting. Almost like he was talking to a child. "I'm fine, San. Promise." He smiled, as wide as he could without the bruise hurting too much. It stung when he smiled, but he couldn't help it. While he was a smiley person anyways, he always seemed to smile more around Sandy.
"Right, so..." He started, patting his hands on his knee's, before standing up. "Let's go find some food or something, yeah?" He smiled at her, and offered his hand to help her up. Even if she could get off the couch on her own, it was always the nice and gentlemanly thing to do, right? "I don't know about you, but I'm hungry." He hadn't exactly eaten much today, and the pain on his face had numbed the fact that he was hungry, but his stomach was growling now. There would be food out somewhere, there always was. Plus - if he knew Sandy, he knew she would be hungry. Plus, she had mentioned wanting to see if he wanted to get food anyways, right? And maybe find some ice for my face...

Waters weren't known for being notorious fighters, not so much as the Fires and even Thunders were. Of course, they also weren't as peaceful as the Earths, but at least the majority of Waters were able to stick up for themselves pretty well (and one another, she guessed, in many cases). She wasn't going to encourage this fighting, though. It wasn't exactly desirable. She gave Gale a look that told him this wasn't over, though she wasn't likely to remember later... at least, that would probably be the case if he didn't have an enormous bruise covering half his face. It served as a pretty decent reminder, to be honest. "You already told me that," she said, but she decided that if he obviously didn't want to tell her, then she would just have to get it out of him later. Between having an older brother and parents and all her friends, she had a good arsenal of tactics when it came to getting things from people... not that Sandra demanded very much, not really. "How'd you take care of it?" she wanted to know anyway, still eyeing the dark bruise with wariness as if it were something separate that had attacked and latched itself onto her friend's face. (She knew, of course, that this wasn't really the way bruises worked.)
The idea was reassuring enough, but Sandra noticed the look on his face even as he smiled, and there was something off about it somehow. "Does it hurt?" she asked, feeling a little bit childish and probably sounding that way too, like a tiny kid asking her parents about it. Unlike a parent, though, Gale definitely wasn't about to say "no, it doesn't hurt" -- or at least, not if he were being honest. It was a bit of a stupid question, in retrospect, like asking someone if it was hard to walk with a broken leg, or if being blind impaired vision at all. He'd have to be Superman not to feel that bruise (assuming that Superman could be bruised, which was really just a ridiculous notion). Gale, however, was no superhero. He was a good guy, to be sure, and her best friend, but he was no Clark Kent, and until such time as he developed some Clark Kent-esque superpowers, Sandra wasn't going to be too into the idea of his getting into random fights with the Thunders. Those guys could be vicious. This was clear evidence of that.
She made a soft hummm sound to herself for a second before answering, but eventually took his hand and stood up, back to all smiles though her mind wasn't really at ease as before. "Food sounds good," she said, one hand on her stomach as if feeling it would somehow tell her that she was hungry. She didn't really need random quirks to tell her that she was, indeed, pretty hungry, though. "Me too! I slept through dinner!" She figured that this wasn't a really weird thing for him to hear; it definitely happened more frequently to Sandra that it seemed to for other people. "We should get something for that bruise, too..." she said, half-pulling him along to the Common Room exit, even though it'd been his suggestion to go in the first place. Once outside, she linked their arms, her right with his left. "So where to, boss?"

Gale could tell Sandy wasn't exactly thrilled about the fact that he had gotten into a fight. Though he was a typical teenage boy, and didn't they all get into fights? He avoided it the best he could, and while he had gotten into fights before, he never ended up with quite a nasty bruise on his face before. It was grotesque and he didn't like the idea of everybody seeing it. Though it did make him look tough, he thought. Even though Rafael walked away with nothing wrong with him. That was the part he wished he could have changed. He sighed. He hated not telling the Sandy the truth, so he decided to come out with it. "Okay okay, it was one of the younger students. His name is Rafael. We've sort of gotten into scraps before." He shook his head, and waved it off. "But really, it isn't a big deal." He will get what's coming to him.
He always had a bit of a vengeful nature, even if it never outwardly came out. Since his father was killed by that fire, he always had a hatred for fires. Wanting to get back at them. He wasn't a hateful person, and tried to see the best in everybody. But that didn't always happen, of course. Some people where nice to their own groups of friends, but jerks to those outside that. Gale tried to be nice, or at least smile, at every person he came in contact with. Even if they where his natural born enemies. "Well.. I haven't... yet... But I'm going to. He responded, smiling at her a little bit. It was true, he had plans for taking care of it. He just needed to train himself, both mentally and physically, a bit first. He was going to get back at Rafael. Now it was a matter of pride. "Well, yeah. But it's not too bad." He said, nodding a bit. Which was not a full lie, but not the full truth either. It hurt every time he smiled, but he couldn't stop smiling. Es specially not around Sandy.
Food did sound good. Gale was your usual high school aged boy, and he could eat forever it seemed. He was thankful that he never seemed to gain weight, either. Even though he was quite lazy. He slept alot, and spent a lot of time studying. Hitting the gym was certainly not top on his priority list. He would like to have some bigger muscles, as most guys would, he just didn't want to put the effort in to get them. "I'm not surprised. I kind of figured you had." He chuckled as she took his hand and pulled her up. He liked feeling her hand in his, and wanted to hold it longer, but he knew he was over thinking things. It was a silly crush on his best friend, and he felt like a little junior high schooler when he felt this way. It was almost giddy, but he didn't show that on the outside. "Okayy, if you insist. But really, it's not too bad." He reassured her as they walked outside, taking her arm in his. "Well, where is the best place to get us some food?" He glanced over at her. "Your the master at this , aren't you?" He joked, laughing a little, and starting to walk. " We will find something."

Rafael. The name sounded familiar, but Sandra didn't really know the guy at all, and judging by the shade of purple that Gale's bruise was turning, she really didn't want to. She was relieved, though, that she hadn't had to do anything in particular to get the information that she'd wanted. Unfortunately, now that she had it, Sandra wasn't really sure what the heck she was going to do with it. She couldn't very well just march up to Rafael and demand that he stop, and to be honest, she definitely wasn't strong enough (physically or elementally) to stand up to a guy like that... Well, maybe if he was younger, but if Gale couldn't take him, then she probably wouldn't be able to do anything. Some kind of protective instinct flared inside of her, though. "Rafael..." she said, and the name felt weird in her mouth because she didn't think she'd ever said it before, at least not when referring to the Thunder kid. "What grade?" She didn't know that, even. "When did you get into fights before?!" His insistences that it was "no big deal" were meaningless, though, because obviously his own face didn't agree.
It was a departure from what she'd consider the "normal" Gale, the happy and friendly Gale who had that perpetual smile on his face. They were alike in that sense. She supposed this kind of set them apart, though, because Sandra was pretty unlikely to go running off and getting into fights. She wasn't a fighter, had never really wanted to be, and the best she could do was keep looking forward and holding her own. She was pretty good at that, actually, just getting by and taking care of herself when it was needed, but she wasn't the type to attack. Gale sounded pretty sure of himself and the fact that he was going to, though. She frowned right back even as he smiled. "But Gale..." She was no good at standing up to friends, on a whole other note from fighting and defending herself against the likes of rough and tough Thunders. "Boys," she huffed to herself, but she let him hear it and didn't bother to keep her voice down much. "But why go back if you could get hurt again?" This was one of thsoe things that didn't really make much sense to Sandra and probably never would. She didn't really want it to, either. Gale really was her best friend, but this was probably something she couldn't really get behind at all.
She grinned at his reaction to what she'd said, though, something that was actually much more characteristic than a frown. "Me either!" Sleeping through dinner was pretty common, actually, or at least more common than it was for anybody else. Most people didn't exactly have that problem, at least not the high schoolers at the Academy -- the schedule was pretty inflexible for them. "Yo," she started, poking his cheek (the one on the side of his face that was still okay, of course), "it's pretty bad and we're getting you ice or something." If they couldn't find any ice just lying around (and she wasn't sure it was too likely they would) they could always make a stop by the nurse's office and ask for some -- Sandra knew from personal experience that they usually had everything a student needed for this kind of thing. Apparently fights were pretty common... Fights or sports injuries. "I have no idea though! I was hoping you knew... or for an adventure. Adventures are good. Except I'm kind of really hungry." She decided to take the lead anyway, basically pulling him along after her despite the fact that he was, actually, a considerable amount bigger than she was. "So sloooow," she whined.

Gale was the type of person who felt he could always handle his own problems. That he never needed help. When he did need help, it wasn't for something like this. He was a fairly independent person, and especially didn't want to get Sandy involved in his problems. He didn't think she was actually going to do anything, but he really couldn't be sure. He nodded a bit when she repeated Rafaels name. Every time he said it, it left a bitter taste on his tongue. He really didn't like the kid much at all. "I'm actually not sure. I just know he's younger than us." He said with a small nod, before frowning at her next comment. He merely shrugged a little bit. "There have been a few times before, but nothing real serious. I've never came out with quite such a hansom battle scar." He said, laughing it off and motioning towards his bruise.
Gale was not a fighter, and certainly didn't go looking for them. He figured Sandy knew him well enough to know that he wasn't doing this on purpose. At least he kind of hoped so. The thing about water students though, was they where like one giant family. He thought of them all as his family, and he would protect them with his life. Es specially the ones he really cared about, and Sandy was certainly one of those people he really cared about. That is what best friend status was for right? His smile turned into a frown at her words. He didn't want her to be concerned. He almost wished he wouldn't have told her. But it felt nice to know that somebody did care. He sighed, but didn't really feel the need to respond to her comment. "It's not really something I can explain, Sandy. I guess you could say... it's a matter of.. dignity." He shrugged a little, but it was true. It was for him. Pride and dignity, there wasn't really anything more to it. He just wanted to leave a scar.
His smile came back as the conversation turned lighter. It really didn't surprise him at all that she slept through dinner. He had seen it happen multiple times, and he had done it a few times himself. It happened to students, when there was a set dinner time. All of them where worn out from the school day, and sleep just sounded good all the time. He knew he was missing out on a lot of sleep. He was usually the last one to bed, since he took it upon himself to clean up the common room after everybody went to bed. He could just be harsher and make other people do it, but he didn't have a problem with it. He chuckled a little as she poked his cheek, before smiling at her. "Yes master, if you insist." He couldn't help but laugh. Nothing was serious to him, not really anyways. He sort of hoped that they might give him some pain meds too. He followed as Sandy drug him along. That was until she made the comment about him going to slow. With that, he stopped walking and planted his feet firmly on the ground, not budging. "I'm slow, huh? Is this better?" The smile on his face showed that he was obviously teasing, and he raised an eyebrow at her.

Apparently, Gale didn't know Rafael very well at all. Somehow this made the entire situation worse for Sandra, the fact that her best friend was going around picking fights with people he didn't even really know. She was a Water through and through, so she really wasn't as peaceful necessarily, in the same way that the Earths were. She just really, honestly did not see the point, and while she was sure that this wasn't something Gale would have wanted to hear... Well, he was her best friend. If she couldn't be honest with Gale (and, well, a few choice other people, but Gale was the one in question at the moment) then she may as well not be able to honestly tell anyone anything ever again. Friendships were pretty serious business to Sandra. She didn't know what these "other times" had been, at least not in enough detail that she would have remembered on the spot like that, but she did vaguely recall a few things. She'd known Gale for a pretty long time. "That's not funny," she tinformed him, pouting but in actuality pretty serious. "Purple faces are not attractive." It kind of lightened the situation a little, but Sandra was mostly just not very good at taking things seriously. She meant it, though.
Dignity. It was a word that Sandra didn't really use often in every conversation, at least not in any serious way. There was joking around, sure, but when it came to it, what did teengers really know about dignity anyway? She wouldn't equate winning in a fight to having dignity, anyway... "Ugh. Guys," she said, giving him the side-eye as well as she could. She'd pretty much never understand the pitfall of testosterone that most dudes seemed to fall into, that thing that drove them to want to be the best and on top of their game all the time. Sandra didn't think she was weak (except for, uh, physically) but she didn't need to go around picking fights either. Then again, she didn't think Gale was the type to pick these fights. If anything, it was that Rafael's fault, and she was none too pleased with this beating on her best friend. That said, she didn't even know the guy. "You're our leader," she added. Leaders were supposed to keep the peace or something! The Fires and Earths were already in that war on their own...
Considering how quickly she was walking (or trying to walk) his arm actually slipped out of hers when he stopped walking, and only this made her pause to turn around and see what was going on. Apparently he wasn't doing anything, just standing there. Well, Sandra was not going to have this personal attack on her (mock) authority, thanks very much. "Mr. Gale Tobias Harrison," she said, standing a few feet away from him now as she'd taken a few steps before she had noticed he'd stopped. She would drag his full name into this situation just because she could, damn it all. "Don't make fun of me, punk. Let's take this outside!" She was obviously kidding, though -- even if she weren't, it would be a really stupid idea for her to challenge Gale to a fight.
(edit: we've decided to end this thread here! :3)
