Sandra hummed contentedly as she left her final class, saying goodbye to her friends, who were headed to the library. That was too academic for her, nope -- she wasn't sure how some people could be so very academic, to be honest, but to each their own. She would let them carry on and do their thing and end up with, er, a future, and she would spend her days napping and mooching off of people's things... Well, no, not really. At some point, Sandra was sure that she would have to gain and manage some kind of work ethic, but that time was not yet, and so she wasn't too bothered by it. Live and let live. She wandered off on her own, grasping by one of his arms her teddy bear, Roosevelt, and drumming her fingers on her backpack strap with her free hand. She debated on where to go -- there was nothing really interesting going on, and dinner wouldn't be for another few hours yet, so there was definitely time for her to wait.
The hallway was empty somehow, despite the fact that class had just ended (at least for the high schoolers), so she decided to forego any pretense and just skip along. There was a natural bounce in her step anyway, but having just come from a class she actually enjoyed, she was even more upbeat than usual. She reached the end of the hallway and exited out into the courtyard, which didn't seem to be very interesting either, but it was much more crowded than it seemed to be inside. That was to be expected, she supposed -- it was a nice day outside, with a breeze, the kind of weather that she supposed would be good for everyone, elemental or mortal or otherwise. She decided that this would be a nice place to get some fresh air too, and slowed her skipping down to a simple walk, distracted easily by some Earth students playing around with some of the nearby flowers, which bent easily to their wills.
She was so preoccupied watching them, in fact, that she managed not to notice where she was going, and bumped into someone. "Sorry!" she said hastily, the apology out of her lips before she'd even registered who it was she'd so unceremoniously walked into. Probably his or her fault just as much as it was her own, to be honest, because small though she may be, Sandra wasn't invisible, after all -- but she should have been paying attention to where she was going, as well. Being in such close proximity, she had to look up to see the face of the poor guy, but upon doing so she discovered that it was actually a rather familiar face. "Oh, hey! Josh, right?" Well, he wasn't exactly someone she knew well, no, but she did know a number of things about him, such as the fact that he was involved with Nell, and that he was a Fire who'd turned traitor to the alliance... sometime within the past year or two. Sandra prided herself on a pretty decent memory, but the dates were messy in her mind. They had been introduced a number of times, but never really had the opportunity to speak. To Sandra, however, Nell was a friend, and therefore Joshua, being in a relationship with Nell, was also a friend. He had to be a pretty decent guy, either way, she figured.

'Look where you're going' would not have been an appropriate scolding for the college student, mostly because he was not going anywhere when the girl bumped into him. Instead, Joshua was glancing at a text from Annabel on his phone and smiling softly to himself—until a weight slammed into him and caused him to lose his grip on the device. "Fuck!" he cursed, fumbling with it for a moment before he secured the phone in his fingers and exhaled in mild relief. It was not like he was short on funds, he could replace it if it broke, but Joshua did not like to be outright wasteful. He'd blow a ton of money on extra sunglasses when he already had about two hundred pairs, sure, but he didn't want to buy another phone if he could avoid it. He had heard the apology but did not recognise the voice and so, after ensuring that his phone was alright, he turned a gray-eyed glare to the intruder of his personal space. "You should watch where you're going." Joshua did not like to be wrong or to own up to mistakes. If there was any plausible way for him to get out guilt, he would. Guilt did not sit well with him. As far as he was concerned, in this situation he had done no wrong. This girl had not been looking where she was going and he was merely an innocent victim of circumstance whose sister was probably wondering why it was taking him so long to get back to her by now. They'd been texting back and forth for several minutes, Joshua avoiding a call thanks to the general commotion of the courtyard at present.
He cocked an eyebrow when she used his name, then realised that he did indeed know who she was. He was good with remembering people and the moment he realised he knew her face, the appropriate name popped into his head. He nodded. "Sandra. I wasn't expecting you to bump into me." His tone was cool, his words suggesting the lack of apology. Joshua was not exactly trying to be rude to her, no, but he wasn't the best at dealing with new people. It took a long time for him to warm up to a person and learn what sort of things they did and did not like in conversation. Whether or not he'd care depended on how close they grew as friends. He did not consider Sandra a friend—no, she was Nell's friend. Probably a mutual friend with another couple of the Earths and Waters he knew, too. Not his own. Joshua hadn't spoken properly with her before. He noticed that she was clutching a teddy bear and wondered why in the hell that was necessary. He glanced at it, considered a remark, restrained himself. He was blunt to the point of being considered rude sometimes but it was not his intent to start an argument. He glanced down at his phone as it vibrated in his hand, then ignored the Water girl for a moment as he tapped out a quick reply to his sister, telling her that he had to go. "Where were you even headed?" He looked back up at Sandra as he pocketed the phone, gaze questioning.
[Gah my posts are shorter today, sorry xD]

He seemed kind of angry, and she wondered whether this was because she had bumped into him, or whether he had been like that to start -- having a bad day or something. Sandra didn't dwell on this thought but just brushed it off, hoping that it was the latter. She didn't try to make a habit of getting people upset with her, after all, especially not people she considered friends (or at least friends-to-be-made). She said nothing in response to his cursing, as she figured it hadn't really even been directed at her, but she nodded quickly at what he said afterward. That had clearly been for her, considering there was no one else in the immediate surrounding area, and it didn't seem likely that he would say that to himself. "I know," she said, going a bit pink although she didn't actually embarrass or scare easily. "Sorry," she repeated before adding, by way of an explanation, "I was kind of watching the Earths... What they can do with plants is really pretty." Hopefully it didn't sound too much like a lame excuse, she thought as she pointed out the elementals in question on the other side of the courtyard, but it was the truth, after all.
It seemed to take him a few moments to realize who she was, or maybe he just took a few seconds to find her because he had to actually look down to see her, even when she'd taken a step back to allow him a bit of personal space. "I wasn't expecting to bump into you either!" she answered, not trying to be cheeky, but perhaps that was the way it would appear regardless. She noticed a mild annoyance in his voice this time, but hopefully it was something that would pass; Sandra didn't deal well with people being upset at her, certainly not when it was over an accident (albeit an accident that was her fault). His glance at Roosevelt didn't go missed, and she drew the bear up to her chest then, wrapping an arm around him protectively, as if waiting for the sneer that tended to come from people when they saw him, but it didn't come, and she relaxed a little bit more. Josh was a friend of many of her own friends, she reminded herself -- he had to be a nice guy. Sandra would trust in that. She allowed him to finish texting whoever was on the other end, and then smiled brightly at him. "Mm, nowhere in particular!" she answered, thinking a bit. Her feet had obviously carried her here with some sort of purpose, she supposed. "Just to find some fresh air, so... here, I guess! What are you up to?" she asked in return, not shy.
(haha, no problem! XD)

Though he'd hung around his new alliance for a good year now, it was still taking some getting used to. Like the fact that they were usually much quicker and more willing to apologise for things, even if those things were not their fault to begin with. Sandra had some fault in the situation (Josh possessing the rest and ignoring this fact) but it still surprised him. The emotion didn't show in his face as he blinked at her, noticing the pink colour to her cheeks. She seemed sincere enough and so he decided that he would believe her, following her gesture toward the Earth elementals in question. With his fiancee being an Earth, Joshua had a respectful fascination with what they could do. He'd given Nell free reign over the garden at their mansion and he loved to see what she did to it each day. "It's fine. They definitely have a talent." There was no smile on his face, no real cheeriness to his words, and yet at the same time Josh was as sincere as she'd been when she apologised to him. He showed it in odd ways and it was not uncommon for people to misconstrue his words, his actions, everything and anything about him when they didn't know him well. He wasn't a particularly odd person, merely hard to get to know. It took persistence and (usually) about a year of effort. Once someone really showed they cared about getting to know him, he'd start to respond. Sometimes. It wasn't always fated to work out, and he couldn't help that, really. It wasn't in his personality to try too hard.
He did indeed assume the comment to be cheek and his gray eyes flashed with subtle warning. Trying to be funny, are you? It seemed to counter the genuine apology from earlier, not clicking to Josh that she could be kidding or simply not realise how her words might be taken. "Hilarious." His voice was dry, expression unamused. This was why so many people gave up in the quest of befriending him. He did not make it easy. Sandra seemed persistently friendly, though, cheery and rather forward with her next words. He paused, not sure whether or not he wanted to humour her at all, then decided it wasn't worth it to walk away quite yet. "I was heading here. I got where I was going." He'd been planning to sit down on one of the benches but they were, as of the current moment, occupied. There was a small open spot beside two friends sitting and laughing but he never felt comfortable sitting too close to people he didn't know. He was not shy, merely not as social as someone from Sandra's element. They'd befriend the scenery if they could, he bet. "Other than that, nothing important." Texting his sister was important, at least to Joshua, but he was not the type of person to open up about things early on in meeting someone. "Why are you carrying that around with you?" He couldn't help it, had to demand an answer for the bear in her arms. It was not spoken as a demand, though, merely an arid question accompanied by a raised eyebrow.
[He's so difficult when you don't know him xD]

She smiled and nodded, glad that he seemed to understand, even if he wasn't too enthusiastic about the whole thing. That was probably just in his nature. Her eyes wandered over to where the Earths were still goofing around, unaware that they'd caused a traffic accident in the middle of the courtyard. The flowers they were working with seemed to be brighter, more vivid in colour, stand up straight and bloom fuller than the ones that went untouched (for the time being, of course -- to the best of her knowledge, Earths loved all life). "Wish I could do something like that," she said, though it was only half-honest, and the very next thing she said was, "Wouldn't give mine up though." There was something to be said for all the elements, but Water was hers and there was none other. That said, there was something beautiful about the way Earths could really breathe life into something, allow a plant to flourish and reach its full potential. The other elements weren't quite so linked to life in that way.
Sandra noted the subtle change in his eyes, though his face seemed to remain the same as always. The dry tone didn't do much to encourage her, either, and so again she was quick to apologize, "Sorry! I didn't..." The sentence was left hanging for a few moments before she finished, "Didn't really mean it like that." She wasn't even sure what she'd done wrong, to be honest, but it was a real apology -- she rarely meant to be mean or rude or insensitive. She made jokes, sure, with friends, but in this case it had been more of the first thing that came to her mind than anything else. Hopefully he wasn't angry... He was still here and talking to her pretty willingly, it seemed, so maybe if she were just more careful with her words everything would be alright. Of course, Sandra wasn't very good with minding her words. "That's good! Why here?" she asked, wondering if maybe he was supposed to be meeting someone and she was keeping him. Of course, he didn't seem to be in much of a rush. At his question she looked down at what she was carrying on herself, but this was just a bag and teddy bear, neither of which were particularly strange things for Sandra to be carrying around. Everyone carried a bag, however. She assumed he meant the bear. "Oh -- no real reason, just for fun I guess. He's sort of soft and squishy and nice." It was the object of much mockery for some of the student body, particularly the more mean-spirited Fires and Thunders, but these were generally comments she could wave off. "His name's Roosevelt!" A history joke on Sandra's part when she had been naming him, but not many people knew much of history.
(LOL it's all good, it's kind of hilarious. XD)

He supposed that all elementals had moments where they envied the other five but it seemed Sandra and Josh agreed on something. He certainly wouldn't switch his power if given the chance, either. He did not bother saying this even if it would have given them a topic to relate on. He was a man of few words when you didn't know him well, saying mostly what was necessary and not much more. He was getting better with it, at least he wasn't silent around Sandra, but it was definitely a prominent quality all the same. He considered her with a frown when she apologised yet again. Was she being serious? It was hard to tell with some people. Some faked sincerity extremely well and others were as see-through as glass. He decided, once again, that he would take her word for it. What reason would she have to lie, anyway? If she was trying to be a smart-ass she'd probably have smirked at him when he caught on. That's how Josh saw it. My bad, then. He should have apologised himself, perhaps, for assuming that she was trying to be cheeky with him. He didn't bother. "No reason. I felt like being outdoors, this fit the criteria." He shrugged, not seeming too invested in the conversation. At least she was getting an answer and he hadn't simply walked away yet. He did that sometimes with people who irked him. Sandra was not a friend but she was not someone he considered an enemy.
He listened unsmiling to her explanation about the teddy bear, still not quite understanding the appeal. Annabel had a lot of stuffed animals around her room but she didn't carry them around at school with her. Not when she was younger and certainly not now. Teddy bears were for kids. He almost said something but before he could open his mouth, Sandra seemed to decide it would be a good idea to tell him the bear's name. Luckily for her, that caught his full attention and an understanding flashed in his gray eyes. "Like Theodore... Teddy, I see." I see what you did there. It was witty, he supposed, even though it would fly over the heads of most. Joshua loved history and anything referencing it and so it relaxed him against the blunt comment he might otherwise have made. He didn't necessarily try to be rude to people, he was simply honest to a fault with his opinions. "So you like History, then?" It was the first time he'd shown a real interest in their conversation since she'd forced it on him by bumping into him. He generally didn't invest much in strangers or near-strangers but his intrigue when it came to a favourite subject was too difficult to resist. A few of his friends were also friends of hers and that meant she was alright, he supposed, but he always formed his own opinions of people.

Luckily for Josh, Sandra wasn't easily bothered by people who didn't seem as into things as she was. This was of course largely due to the fact that very few people were, though. She had little motivation to do things like schoolwork and chores at home (or even just cleaning her dorm here) and the like, but when it came to hobbies and things just-for-fun, she had no issues. Talking to people was easy, too, not the kind of thing that required effort on Sandra's part. Maybe other people were different, though. She nodded in response to what he said about being outside -- it was a nice day, a little bit cool for the time of year, but it was sunny, and that was good enough for Sandra. Maybe she could head out to the lake later or something -- if she could drag anyone with her... or probably even if she couldn't. "Yeah... it's pretty nice out! I guess the Hollow usually has pretty nice weather, though..." Sometimes it got pretty miserable, and obviously the winters were freezing, but Sandra was pretty much okay with all of it. It was just weather.
She nodded, beaming, when he seemed to understand. All Canadian bias aside (although it was definitely there, she would admit) Sandra had to say that Theodore Roosevelt was one very badass dude, thanks very much. She'd gotten the teddy bear not too long ago, actually, maybe two years or so, and it had been the first name to come to mind. Since then, he had accompanied her to many a class, and people were pretty used to the sight. Most didn't really understand the Roosevelt thing, though, which was just sad. She expected that maybe it was a result of the fact that many of them were Canadian kids who, really, didn't have any reason to learn such things about American History. Maybe everyone should. Teddy freaking Roosevelt! "That's right!" she said, maybe a little overexcited that he understood. It was the kind of thing maybe more people should know, considering that the bear was named after the original President Roosevelt, but not many people around here really spotted it. She didn't really know what Josh was interested in at all, but here seemed to be a start. She would run with it. "I do! I kind of just dabble, but," she said, grinning. "Like it enough to name a bear after one of the most badass U.S. presidents, I guess! I'm guessing you do like it if you got that..."
(LOL it's cool, yo! sandra will manage. ♥ sorry this post is kind of awful, i'm really tired right now. x___x)

Maple Hollow definitely had its good days with weather, though like any place in Canada it had its bad ones as well. It was like their weather couldn't decide whether it wanted to be pleasant or foul and so it simply switched between the two on a regular basis. They hadn't got any snow in July yet but he wouldn't be surprised if it happened in the near future. He nodded in agreement to Sandra's comment. He wondered if she lived there or whether she, like many of the boarding school students, simply went down to the city during the weekends with her friends to really experience the small but interesting settlement for themselves. To call Maple Hollow a sleepy settlement would not be all that accurate, for it wasn't boring so much as it was small. You didn't need hundreds of thousands of people to have a good time, at least not in his opinion. Josh wasn't fond of crowds. "That'll change come winter." He did not like the snow. The cold he could manage, for Joshua was a Fire elemental and there were none more adept to dealing with the cold than they were. The snow was different. Sometimes he wished that Maple Hollow had remained an elemental only settlement. Then you'd be able to tell where Fire elementals had walked in the snow by the perfectly cleared paths through it. Alas, it could not be so. It hadn't been that way in his parents time nor the time before that. There were a lot of humans in the Hollow. He had little sympathy for the first ones to arrive, ruining it for the rest of the population.
He blinked at her excitement, a little surprised by it, but the faintest twitch of his lips suggested that he did not really mind it at all. Joshua was not an overly sociable person but he did have a sense of humour and could find things funny, it was merely a rare occurrence that he actually let others onto this. It had taken him a while to start kidding around with the girl who was now his fiancée. "Clever." Oh, he was sure it had been done before, but at least it was more interesting than naming the bear Teddy for the sake of it being a teddy bear. Some people completely lacked creativity. He still didn't quite get why a teenager such as herself felt the need to cart a bear around with her but he decided against being rude about it. She wasn't that bad, he supposed. "I'm a History major, it sort of comes with the territory." Joshua shrugged, not seeming too interested even though he was. History fascinated him. His cues upon first interacting with someone he didn't know all that well were confusing, mixed signals if there ever were. He could not simply look excited about something when he was, he had to lead them in another direction first. He didn't do it on purpose, it was merely out of habit. Don't seem interested and people will go away, they'll leave you alone, you won't have to let them in. His trust issues were still present after all this time. "Canadian history, U.S. history, World history... I take a number of the classes." That was sort of the point of a major, after all.
[No worries!]

Change it would. Sandra had been in Maple Hollow for a number of winters now for school, and winters were never as nice and warm as she would like. She liked warm days, did much better in the heat than the cold (though she didn't do well in extremes of either). Hot days were also made for swimming and ice cream -- not that, when it came to the latter of the two, cold weather stopped Sandra anyway. "Might as well enjoy it while it lasts!" She cast her eyes up to the sky, which was that kind of perfect, stark blue that people seemed to love taking pictures of. It was pretty clear, too; she squinted and turned away when the sun came out from behind the sole fluffy white cloud in the sky. "Already September, huh..." Across the continent, most everyone else was returning to or had been in school for some time already by now. For Sandra and the other elementals, though, who'd been here since January (not including the month-long break in between semesters), the year would be finishing itself up within the next two months. She didn't envy other students at this moment.
It was hard to tell whether or not Joshua was being serious when he said that Roosevelt's name was clever, but she decided that she would just take his word for it. There was no point going around being suspicious of people she was trying to befriend. "History major, eh?" She couldn't tell whether or not it suited him or not, but of course most people's majors weren't really easily guessed just at first glance. She wondered briefly what she would want to study in university -- it was something she tried to think about as infrequently as possible. She decided, though, that he had to like History if he had chosen to study it, and so long as he liked it, it was probably fitting enough. She didn't know him well enough to properly judge otherwise, though (and even if she did know him better than she did, who the hell was she to say so?). "Which ones are you taking now?" she asked, curious. She had to admit that she didn't put much stock into academics, being more concerned with living her life, for instance, than studying about it, à la biology class. Still, she figured that there was a whole world of possibilities out there... and it was never too late to want to do something, even if she wasn't nearly dedicated enough to put in work to do something huge with her life. She did like History, though -- learning about it if not doing any work for it. That was always interesting; like a story, almost, but... things that had happened to real people.
Hopefully Josh was willing to share, even if it didn't seem that he was very talkative otherwise. Sandra would be willing to listen if this were the case.

School to Joshua was what could be considered a relatively 'safe' subject. He was not afraid to talk about his majors or the classes he was taking because it was not something he tried to keep a secret, not something he was ashamed of or something so personal that he talked about it only with his close friends. It was also something he defaulted to when he didn't know a person well but wanted to make conversation. 'Hey, how's school going for you?' Most people didn't mind. Some of them complained about their classes, others enthused about things they were actually looking forward to, still others complained about tests or research papers. It was something. So when Sandra asked him, the pause he gave was only to consider how in-depth his answer would be. "For my History major? Well I'm talking ancient civilization and an advanced seminar." Going into the year he'd thought he was going to hate the seminar, required as it was for his major, but he actually found it pretty enjoyable. His Biology major was a lot more hands-on thanks to anatomy and labs but he really loved history and so the lack of physical work didn't bother him all that much. "I'm a double major, too, so there's that." It would have been simpler if the two majors had courses in common but the only one that counted toward both was History of Medicine. It was an interesting class but it was only one class.
The thing he liked the most about college was the freedom, really. He could take courses that he actually wanted rather than being stuck with gym or art. He hadn't liked the required art course because he was only good at plain old sketching and he was bad at gym because he couldn't do the whole 'teamwork' thing. He'd had to talk it out with the administration and do extra credit to make sure he kept his marks up in those classes so that they didn't drag his grades down. Now, in college, he had no excuse not to do his best. He still had to take some general classes like Math and the like but at least art and physical education was out of the question. He liked mathematics because it was like following instructions. As long as you knew what you were doing, it was easy. "Do you plan on going to college here?" He figured it was a general enough question and she was making an effort to converse with him so he might as well show her that he wasn't too impossible. Difficult, yes, but not impossible. He wouldn't have any friends if he didn't eventually relax around people and give them the time of day when they wanted it.
[i hate you for making me research history majors xD]

Sandra didn't hate school, contrary to popular belief, and if there wasn't much better to talk about (which sometimes happened when faced with people she didn't know and who were like Josh) she was okay with discussing it, even. What she did dislike was doing work, and that was a totally different matter altogether. School in and of itself was perfectly okay. "Ancient civilization, huh?" She didn't know much about ancient civilizations -- in fact, to be honest, Sandra didn't know much about any history, just bits and pieces that she'd learnt over time and found interesting. This was actually kind of the way she knew most things, which made it kind of lousy when people expected her to really know things. Sandra could definitely stand to be a little more dedicated to something, but it wasn't really the way she operated."So which ancient civilizations are you studying?" She figured that they couldn't cram all the ancient civilizations in the history of mankind into one semester's worth of classes, after all.
"What's your other major?" she asked out of curiosity, trying to gauge what he would be the type to do. Then again, she hadn't really seen History coming, which just showed how brilliant Sandra could be at analyzing and predicting things. He seemed like a pretty smart guy, somehow -- maybe because he took what seemed to be a vested interest in a subject, which was more than most people. She figured it was something pretty academic-intensive -- of course, studying anything was academic, but there were always the Sciences and then the Social Sciences and languages and artsy things, and a whole list of other areas that people could go into, even at a small place like the Academy. It was probably good, too -- it allowed a pretty wide range of people around the place, and really it'd be pretty boring if the only people around here were focused solely on their element or one or two narrower fields of study. "Not sure!" she answered brightly, not too bothered by this, the fact that the only thing she could be sure of was her own uncertainty. "Lots of choices... Might stay here. Might go back home. Or go somewhere else in the Hollow!" She wasn't really too bothered by it, though judging by many people's reactions when they learnt this, maybe she should be. ...Nah.

Joshua usually tried to be general in answering questions about school work, figuring that to go into a long-winded ramble about his studies was also to risk losing his conversation partner somewhere along the way. A physicist could claim they were studying physics and get away with it amongst a crowd of high schoolers, but once they started going in-depth about what they were studying it could blend into a mixture of confusing terms and the like. All the same, Sandra's question was not a difficult one to answer. "Well we're going over the Etruscan civilization at the moment. Studied the Incans and the Aztecs, too, though that was earlier. It's more general than anything." There were specific courses relating to each empire or at least a few of them per term but this was not one of those courses. It was a requirement of the major, though, and it was history, so Joshua was quite content with whatever he was "forced" into studying. There really was no forcing him when it came to school. Really, his parents should be proud that they didn't need to threaten to take away computers or video games (or, in someone like Joshua's case, his books and tennis privileges) in order to get him to pay attention in school. Then again, they'd had to deal with other issues in their place. Like his temper, for example, and the fact that it got him into a lot of trouble at school when he'd get into fights.
Was she genuinely interested in what he was studying or was the Water girl merely trying to be friendly? It was hard for Joshua to tell and at this point he didn't really mind either way. It wasn't like he had better things to do. There was texting Annabel, yes, but he saw her every day and sometimes their conversations got a little repetitive. She wasn't boring but there was only so much you could talk about your day when it hadn't been all that eventful to begin with. "Biology." Then, because he was getting used to tacking this on, he said, "When I graduate, I'm going to medical school." He said it so confidently, like there was absolutely no doubt in his own mind that he'd be accepted. Hell, Joshua voiced this as if he'd already been accepted into medical school. He had a lot of drive. If the one in the Hollow wouldn't take him then he'd be damned if he didn't get into some other school. If it meant leaving Nell it would be crushing but he knew his career mattered, too. If Nell was willing to wait for him, he would go off to pursue his studies. If not... he'd cross that bridge when and if he came to it. "Indecisive, eh? Can't say I blame you. There're a lot of choices." He shrugged his shoulders, not envying her the lack of decision. He liked things to be solid and concrete in his life, hated the gray areas.

Sandra couldn't and didn't pretend to know anything about said civilizations, or if she had ever known it before she certainly couldn't remember it now. She was pretty lousy when it came to remembering things for more than a few years, though -- most of her memory seemed to be full of nonsense facts and random gibberish that didn't make sense to anyone else and would never come in handy. At least it was a tiny bit useful for trivia; people always seemed to be surprised when she knew these random things, and she wasn't really sure how to take that, but she decided long ago to just take things as they were. This made it much easier to be a positive person. "General's fun, though! Lets you look at more of the world I guess, right?" She figured it would just based on what he'd said about the civilizations he'd been studying in the class so far, but hey, there was nothing wrong with making conversation. Besides which, Sandra was sure that some small part of her wanted to know what the future could potentially hold for her... This part was mostly silenced by most of her, though, which didn't know and didn't really care.
"Woah, cool!" She definitely wouldn't have pegged him for a Biology major too, but this was probably because he'd already mentioned History, and the two things were pretty far apart as far as school subjects went. Medical school was interesting, too. She supposed that he definitely seemed smart enough for it, though of course she had no idea what Josh was really like. The way he said it made it sound like it was one of those facts that came without a single shred of doubt in his mind, thoguh -- which really just meant that there was none in hers either, because she was pretty willing to believe him. Plus, she didn't know why he would lie or exaggerate that anyway. It wasn't like Sandra was someone difficult to or necessary to impress. "Going for a doctor, then?" Doctors were probably to be admired... and they also made tons of money. Unfortunately, neither admiration nor money were very important to Sandra, but she figured that so long as these weren't the reasons Josh was doing it, he would make one sweet as heck doctor. He seemed to fit the part somehow. "There are," she agreed easily enough. "I think there's time." Well... at least, there was a bit of time. Grade Twelve was coming up fast now. She was aware.

Though he wasn't always the best at judging people five minutes into a conversation, Joshua was getting the optimist vibe from Sandra thus far. She seemed so positive, so cheerful. It reminded him a little of Nell and that was definitely a good sign for their prospective friendship. "That's true. There's certainly a lot to learn about it." Sometimes it got overwhelming even to Josh when he realised how much he didn't know in contrast to what fraction of it he did. Then he thought from another angle about how he'd hate to know everything because it would mean there wasn't anything else to learn. That comforted him. "I like it, though. Gets a bit tedious when we go over things I already know but I guess that's just the problem with passions." If you liked something enough that you studied it outside of a school environment, there was always a chance that in taking the classes related to that particular subject, you'd run into things you already knew. It definitely made the work load easier to cope with but Joshua wasn't the type of person that liked easy. He liked being challenged, he liked tackling new things and expanded on what he'd already learned rather than reading it all over again. His professors appreciated his enthusiasm, at least. It was like Pokemon, he wanted to be the very best. Except he was training for a career that didn't involve capturing creatures against their will and making them fight one another for a living, which in Joshua's opinion was way better.
A rare smile graced his lips when she pronounced his major as 'cool'. Yeah, I think so too. His gray eyes contained a hint of pride and he nodded when she asked him if he was studying to be a doctor. "Well, a physician-scientist, actually. They're doctors that do research, too." He didn't only want to work with patients, he wanted to work on finding cures as well. Solving puzzles was a favourite past-time of his, he liked to find a solution for everything. It was sort of a dream of his that he'd be able to find or at least help find a cure for something in his lifetime. Maybe not something major like cancer, just a lesser disease would do. Anything. Joshua wanted to be noteable for something, to know that all the years he was putting into his career would amount to something more than having 'M.D' tacked onto the end of his name. Though Dr. Dale, M.D sounds pretty sexy if I do say so myself. Yeah, he liked the sound of that. "Yeah, they usually don't force you into it until next year." Joshua, who had known what he wanted to do with his life since he was eight years of age, had not suffered the normal issues when it came to choosing his major(s) or deciding what school he wanted to go to. His decisions had been solidified pretty quickly. "Do you know what you're going for, at least?" She might not have known where she was going to college but maybe she had an idea of what major she'd aim for when she did go.

The world was a pretty big, old place, Sandra thought. This was no longer the days when, as she had learnt, people had believe that the Earth was only 6000 years old. If the entire history of all the world were a twenty-four hour clock, then humans would literally be the blink of an eye, for all that they'd done and how much they'd progressed over the years. Then again, much of this progress had been done over some mere decades or so in the past couple of centuries. Things happened at different paces, though; the Egyptian pyramids and the like were also pretty awesome. "There really, really is," she said, nodding, feeling suddenly kind of ridiculous for how little she knew about all of this. For Sandra, there was probably still much more to learn, if she ever got past where she was now. Eleventh grade was but a small step toward the rest of... well, life, not just education. "That's true, though!" When she managed to pay attention in class, she did kind of feel like a special snowflake (heh) when something was mentioned that she already knew. It was definitely a pretty good feeling (not that she could say it happened often), at least until they spent the rest of the lesson on it, and at that point Sandra tended to zone out and fall asleep. Teachers sort of hated that part. "Don't know, though... it's kind of weird! Even when you know a lot," she started, and she was sure that he did know quite a bit but was talking mostly in general, "there's still so much that you don't know."
She was glad for the smile, that look on his face that seemed... not just happy, but proud. Sandra kind of just liked to make people happy, though, even when it was probably something pretty little, like this. Few people seemed to take any real sense of pride in what they studied these days, though, so it was kind of surreal to Sandra. "Physician-scientist," she repeated (a weird habit of hers), just trying the word out in her mouth. It was definitely not something she'd ever said before, at least not together -- she'd definitely at some points before said both "physician" and "scientist"... just separately. "Research... like on sicknesses? Vaccines and cures and stuff?" Hopefully he wasn't too bothered by how much she was dumbing all of this down by, but truth be told, Sandra knew very little Biology, other than that some of the things biologists could do was awesome. It wasn't her forte by any means, though. "I guess that's how it'd work, yeah," she said, sighing a bit as she did so. Having to grow up and decide things about her actual future was a pretty scary concept to Sandra, who'd spent much of her life being coddled by one person or another. She thought she'd grown up pretty well thus far, all things considered -- she could hold her own far better than most people seemed to expect when confronted with her -- but when it came to important decisions, Sandra was still pretty willing to pass those off to someone else, anyone else. That was mostly the attachment to her own youth talking, though. "Not even a little," she said in response to his question. "Well... more like it's hard to say! Weird to choose something that you'll do for like, four whole years. You know?" Maybe he didn't. He'd already chosen what he was studying, after all, and seemed pretty sure of where he was headed afterward, for that matter.
