shoot it, shoot it out cause they want it a little more you can be rest assured , you give them all you got --------- --------- and you give them a little more It was a glorious, spring Saturday afternoon. School was, as always, grudgingly tiring five days out of the week, so the kids took advantage of their two days of freedom to relax and completely forget what they learned the week before. Devin Thatcher was never a role model student despite his intelligence, and although his memory was as good as ever he preferred to keep it on the down low. He was not much of a fighter to begin with, so actually acting smart was never a wise idea. It saved Devin a lot of trouble with the bullies. After all, what average ten year old was bullied for anything other than possibly being a nerd? It seemed to be quite the popular choice, though other options were certainly available. Blue eyes gazed up into the sky, hands behind his blonde head of hair as the grass tickled his arms. Athena, his seven year old sister, wandered out of the house and knelt over Devin's face to look at him with a smile. "Hi Dev! Whatcha dooooin'?" Inquisitive as always, that one. The boy smiled brightly at his sister and removed one hand to poke her nose. "I was cloud watching, until you put your head in my way."
Athena giggled and fell back, sitting on her rear with a soft thud in the grass. Devin loved his little sister, and hardly ever refused her company unless he was sick or with his best friend. The girl had a bit of a crush on Josh, but she was just a child. It was more than likely a simple admiration for the older boy, but Devin never really asked. Either way, Athena refrained from intruding on their buddy time too often. Today, Josh was actually supposed to come over at some point, but their conception of time was highly skewed. Five minutes was an hour, an hour was a day. "Isn't Josh coming over today? What are you guys gonna do? Am I allowed to join this time? Please!" Devin rolled his eyes and sat up, turning to face his little sister before standing up. "Stop asking so many questions! And no, you can't join us. We're doing cool boy stuff that you wouldn't understand." The boy crossed his arms indignantly, hoping that this would get the point across to his younger sibling. She was not stupid, but young enough to not comprehend everything. The girl tilted her head. "Like what? Does it involve giiiirls?" Athena queried, smirking. Devin scrunched his nose and shook his head vigorously, as though the question was seriously offensive. "Ew, no! I said 'cool boy stuff' not 'giggly girl stuff'. Ridiculous."
After the siblings had a moment long stare down, daring one another to say something more on the matter before they both relented. Athena pouted and slapped her arms over her chest indignantly before storming into the house, yelling for their aunt Judith to tell on her 'mean' older brother. Devin sighed and shrugged his shoulders a little before grabbing his skateboard off of the porch and going towards the street in front of his house. The skateboard was sure to be a decent source of entertainment for a while, at least until Josh showed up. Then they could find something better to do with their time. Devin set the board on the cement and took off a little ways down the street before turning around and coming back again. He had to stay in the vicinity of the house, per Judith's rules, so he merely rode around in a small circle. "Devin!" An older woman's voice called out to him from the house, the blonde stopping mid-skate to meet the flustered expression of his aunt. "Yes Aunt Judith?" She looked stern, irritated. "You need to be nicer to your sister. She is allowed to play with you and Josh today, and that's final." Without awaiting a response from her nephew, Judith went back inside and shut the door. Devin frowned, but partially understood. Judith was the closest thing he had to a mom now, after his mother passed away giving birth to Athena.

.PAY NO MIND _WHAT OTHER VOICES SAY -they don't care about you like i do ( like i do ) SAFE FROM PAIN, AND TRUTH, AND CHOICE AND OTHER POISON DEVILS The beer was cheap and tasted foul but Joshua kept a stubbornly neutral expression as he drank it down. Twelve years old, he was shorter than all of the older boys who surrounded him, leaning against the playground equipment or spitting into the sand. One boy had the privilege of sitting on the only functional swing, the other broken and hanging limply from one half of its chains. Beside him, Dylan lit up a smoke and took a long drag before offering it to the youngest member of their gathering. Josh hesitated for a moment, uncertain. He'd never tried smoking before. Drinking, yes, but never cigarettes. The smoke smelled foul. With the eyes of the others on him, however, he lifted his chin in a defiant gesture and took it in his pale fingers. So do I just...? Seconds later he was coughing and spluttering, surprised at just how awful it felt as it travelled its path toward his lungs. He promptly handed the smoke back to its owner, the laughter of the gang assaulting his ears. Dylan seemed to take pity, though he was grinning. "You alright, kid?" Joshua nodded, determined not to show weakness as he rubbed his throat despite his eyes watering from the force of the cough. "F-Fine," he said, taking another drink from the beer can in hopes that it would soothe his throat. It still tasted like shit and it didn't do much good but a second sip followed the first. They all drank it, why shouldn't he? No smoking, though. That wasn't for him.
His phone rang and he jumped in surprise, having forgotten to turn off the ringer. He didn't like the guys to know when people were calling him, especially when (he noticed, as he took it from his pockets) it was his parents. He chewed the inside of his lip and decided not to answer. Dad's gonna be pissed at me. He acknowledged this with a pulse of fear, then smirked. The fuck do I care? "No one important." His words were cool and he acted nonchalant as he dropped the phone back into his pocket. He didn't need his parents checking on him, god. I'm almost thirteen. Soon he'd be a teenager. He didn't need a stupid curfew, didn't need to answer to every call they made. He remembered what his parents always told him ("Don't ignore the phone, Josh, we worry about you.") but why the hell did they worry? He'd said that he was going out with friends. He did plan to meet up with Devin later on so it wasn't like he had lied to them, he simply hadn't told the entire truth. What if they check? Suddenly he realised that if he didn't go and visit DJ like he'd said he would and somehow the word got back to his parents, he'd be in big trouble. He stayed another five minutes wallowing in doubt and then said, "I'd better get going." This attracted the attention of the guys he was closest to. "Why?" Josh shrugged. "Better things to do. I'll see you guys around." He noticed raised eyebrows and passed glances as he left but recieved no protest.
When he finally reached Devin's street, Joshua realised with surprise that his younger-by-two-years brother was already there. As Joshua neared, Bryce stepped forward and sneered contemptuously. "Sup, loser?" He shoved Devin hard off his skateboard and stood on it so that the other boy couldn't take it back. "Thought my brother was supposed to come around today? Looks like he ditched your dumb ass. Not that I blame him." Bryce talked tough for a ten year old, sneering and jeering the entire time. Joshua was close enough to hear and the words filled him with rage. I didn't ditch him! He realised, not without a pang of guilt, that he might have done if he thought he could get away with it. He'd already been hanging around Devin less and less due to the gang's constant presence in his life. He pushed that aside and yelled, "Hey! What are you doing here, Bryce? Go home." Joshua strode over importantly and punched his brother, hard. Bryce recoiled and snarled, an inhuman sound in his throat. "Fuck you, Josh! Want me to tell Mom and Dad you weren't here?" Joshua narrowed his gray eyes angrily. "Like you're supposed to be out. They trust me, you're not allowed to wander around the Hollow." Technically, neither was Josh. His parents had trusted him to walk to Devin's house because they were too busy to drive and he'd taken advantage of this by going in completely the opposite direction, downtown to the seedy little park.
Bryce shoved him, this time, and Joshua was forced to step back, though the force did not knock him over. Instead it caused the rest of the beer to slosh around in the can that he was, stupidly, still clutching. Dark blue eyes gleamed in triumph as they caught it. "You're drinking again! Dad said he'd kill you if he caught you again! I'm going to tell!" Joshua was alarmed by this, truly alarmed. He can't find out! He can't! He remembered the argument with his father well. The broken lock on the liquor cabinet, the bottle of liquor smashed on the floor, the pain of the injuries, the shaky promise that he'd never do it again. "No you won't or I'll tell them you were out here." He looked at his friend and offered a hand to help him up. "You'll back me up, won't you DJ?" He sure hoped that he would, even though Josh himself hadn't been the most reliable of friends lately. Bryce scowled, flipped them both the finger, stalked off. "Sorry about him." Joshua scoffed and rolled his eyes. His brother was so irritating. "I got lost on the way here," he lied smoothly. "Don't tell, yeah? My parents have finally started to trust me." The entire time he kept his words quiet and cool, his posture casual. Monkey see, monkey do. He tried his best to act like a hotshot because they'd like him better than way, wouldn't they? "Whaddya wanna do?" Though he tried not to admit it, he relished these hangouts with Devin. He never felt like the other, more gullible boy was judging him. Realising he'd need to get rid of the beer, Josh took another sip. "Want some?" It was losing its flavour for Josh. I'll just toss the rest in the bushes if he doesn't. Devin wouldn't care as much as the gang would, right?

shoot it, shoot it out cause they want it a little more you can be rest assured , you give them all you got --------- --------- and you give them a little more Devin continued skateboarding back and forth, feeling incredibly guilty for being so mean to Athena. They had been through so much lately, at least in regards to their age. Devin lost his mother when he was three to childbirth, and his dad was now re-married to some awful woman that neither of his kids liked. She truly was Satan's spawn. Judith also noticed how Lauren treated Devin and Athena, so took it upon herself to invite them over on weekends. Two days of freedom from the wicked step-mother was better than none at all. The boy was still young and did not always comprehend the big picture, but he tried. Lost in his thoughts, he hardly noticed Bryce approach him. Next thing he knew, he was flat on his back on the cement, staring up at his assailant with utter confusion. Devin's arm stung pretty bad from the fall, but did not flinch. Even at this age he handled the bullies with as much nonchalance as possible. No satisfaction. Devin's eyes narrowed a little at the next comment, a small twinge in his heart. "He wouldn't ditch me! He's my best friend. Now give me my skateboard back." With a slower movement than normal, the blonde sat up and held his arm loosely. His forearm was pretty badly scratched up. Hearing a familiar--and much welcomed--voice, Devin turned to see Joshua approaching. He smiled.
The smile lost to gravity and formed into a frown as the boys started to argue, clearly sibling rivalry coming into play. Only having Athena, and being a very non-confrontational person, Devin hardly found himself in such an intense verbal fight. Normally it ended in one or the other in tears and then they made up a few minutes later because they felt horrible for causing someone to shed tears. Joshua offered a hand, and hesitantly Devin took it, using it as leverage to stand up. Josh's question threw him off a little. "Uhm...y-yeah sure. Of course." Insanely loyal. Aiding without question. Supporting without hesitation. Devin was oblivious to just about everything with his best friend, but never took the time to stop and think on the small details. Being so young did not exactly help there. He was still holding his arm and examining the damage. "I won't tell! Why would I do that? All you did was get lost." So incredibly naive. But this was Josh. Why would he have any reason to question his friend? That would make no sense. Besides, even if Devin started to wonder how he got lost on the way to a house he had been to quite a few times before, a gang was most certainly not the first thing on his mind. Josh had the upper hand on this one. "Well, I guess we have to ask Athena," Devin sighed, dropping his arm. "Because Aunt Judith says that she gets to play with us today. I kinda made her cry so..." He looked down at his feet, a bit ashamed for upsetting his baby sister.
Children were gullible. Most believed without asking, followed without question, accepted what was in front of them. Not all, but most. Devin usually did, and was blind to many dark corners in his little world. However, just like when it came to broccoli at the dinner table, some things were quite easy to deny. The boy leaned over and sniffed the inside of the can and wrinkled his nose in disgust. "Ew. That stuff smells like piss. You actually drink that?" Devin shook his head and recoiled slightly, picking up his skateboard in the process. Just then, the front door opened and little Athena bounced down the stairs towards them. "I'm ready to play now! Auntie Judith said I was allowed to. And there's nothing you can do about it, Dev." Devin sighed and dropped his shoulders dramatically, glancing at Joshua with a helpless look. "Fine. Whatever." He tried to sound agitated, but that was hard for Devin to do. He simply was not an angry person, not by any means. Athena clapped her hands together and jumped up and down, clearly eager to get a game going. "Why don't we play tag? Oh oh! Or how about hide and seek? I'm good at that. Or we could play castle, where I'm the princess, and Devin is the ugly dragon, and Josh has to come save me." She smiled triumphantly at them both; apparently she found her ideas perfectly wonderful and did not seem interested in anything the boys suggested. Devin rolled his eyes. "Why would I have to be the ugly dragon? That's stupid." Devin knew he was not ugly, and was very confident in that fact. If that were the case, then why did the girls at school try to kiss him all the time? Not that...he had kissed one yet or anything...

.PAY NO MIND _WHAT OTHER VOICES SAY -they don't care about you like i do ( like i do ) SAFE FROM PAIN, AND TRUTH, AND CHOICE AND OTHER POISON DEVILS Joshua nodded confidently and turned to smirk at his younger brother when Devin asserted the fact that he'd back him. He was confident, cocky when it came to the fact that Devin would do almost anything for him. He never really stopped to think of exactly how naive his friend was, how bad it was that he used him so readily. Every time the guilt started to eat away at him, he told himself that Devin didn't really mind when he was late. Hey, at least he showed up at all, right? "See, Bryce? Mom and Dad will believe Devin over you." His gray eyes glittered coldly as they locked onto the stormy dark blues of the younger boy. "I'm the favourite!" Bryce snapped. Joshua bristled, hating the fact that he thought it to be true. Bryce always had the upper hand when it came to an argument that involved their parents. "You're just the youngest." Bryce muttered something unintelligible and stalked off, apparently deciding that Devin's word would beat both of theirs. My parents never trust me. Why do they always take his side? It wasn't fair. He hadn't been the one that broke the glass table, it was Bryce, but just because Josh had been the one who'd yelled the loudest, who'd reacted with the most defiance, they took his brother's word over his. "You alright, Dev? He hurt you real bad or anything?" Though he did often take advantage of Devin's naive nature, the concern he felt was real. It didn't register in his expression or tone (he was still trying to come off as tough, unshakeable) but it was there.
Devin accepted his excuse almost immediately. It was almost too easy to trick the boy into believing anything he said. He was good at lying to people. He lied to his parents all the time and he lied to the few friends he had, too. He even lied to the gang, let them think that he was another kid from a shabby downtown apartment who left the house and wandered the streets because Daddy had hit Mommy again. He didn't want them to hate him for his nice car and his nice clothes, always trying to disguise brand names when he dressed nowadays. He shrugged at mention of Athena. "Whatever." It was kind of annoying that his kid sister had to play with them but he understood what it was like. His parents forced him to let five year old Annabel hang around him sometimes at home and there wasn't anything he could do to argue against it. If he argued, Donovan got mad, and Josh tried his best to avoid that. He snorted when Devin commented on the beer. "Course I drink it," he said importantly, like it was the best thing since sliced bread. "It's getting warm though." Using this as an excuse to why he didn't finish it, Josh tossed the can into the closest bush he could find just in time for Athena to coming bouncing out of the house like her merry self. He raised an eyebrow at Devin with a knowing, 'here we go' sort of look.
Always the type to be pleasant toward the relatives of his friends (you got in less trouble that way) Joshua cocked a crooked sort of half-smile in Athena's direction. "Hey 'thena." Her games did sound pretty stupid and childish, especially to someone who spent the majority of his free nights hanging around with college kids and drinking beer. They acted a lot older and more important than he did, he wanted to be like them. Still, he didn't dismiss them as such. Instead, his gray eyes glinted with a sort of mischief. "Hide and seek sounds great, Athena. I'll even be it first if you guys want." He shot a look at Devin and, when his sister wasn't paying attention, mouthed, 'Don't run.' He winked at his friend and then said importantly, "Alright I'll give you thirty seconds and I'll turn my back." He did so then, free to smirk as he set his plan into action. It was something he did a lot to Annabel when she tried to play with him in order to give himself some free time and space. "One, two, three..." After he was satisfied that Athena would be far enough away that she couldn't see what he was doing, he turned back to Devin and lifted an eyebrow. "See? Now we both get what we want. She'll get to hide and we can talk about our own stuff while we look for her." It wasn't like they were being too mean, right? Athena would think she was good at the game if they took their time and maybe it would make her happy or something. His real motivation was to talk to Devin. "So what's up, man?"

shoot it, shoot it out cause they want it a little more you can be rest assured , you give them all you got --------- --------- and you give them a little more Devin, though he had a sibling of his own, did not really understand the odd dynamic between Joshua and Bryce. They were so aggressive towards one another, so verbally cruel that it caused the young blonde to reel his head back in shock. He had learned most of his foul language from Josh, actually, though he did refrain from using it in case it accidentally slipped out in front of Judith. If that happened, he was sure to be grounded from doing anything fun for days on end, and that simply would not do. Not at all. Lazy or not, being forced to do something was a bit different than making your own choice. Devin took the time during their banter to examine his arm again, biting at his lip a little when he touched the sensitive skin. It was nothing horrible, but enough to leave a sharp sting when he moved it certain ways. His blue eyes caught Joshua's, smiling. "Ah, no it's fine. I'll wash it off later. It's a bit too big for a band-aid." The scrape went from his elbow and about halfway up his forearm, and about an inch wide. It was not deep, and would scab over soon enough. Devin lowered his arm and looked over at Josh. "Thanks for telling him to back off by the way," He added, shrugging. "I can't believe he accused you of ditching."
Ever the type to shrug off his own problems to care for the needs of others, Devin did not do well when Bryce insulted Joshua's loyalty. He did not know anything about what Josh did outside of their hangout time between houses, and that was fine by him. He figured Josh spent time with other friends--who those friends were, he had no idea. Devin blinked and watched as his friend tossed the can into the bush, not really saying much on the matter. Whatever the boy wanted to drink, he could drink, but Devin was not going anywhere near something that smelled like urine. That was just gross. Athena missed the can in the bush motion and cheerfully smiled at them both, triumphant and happy. "Hi Josh!" The girl replied with a nod, unaware that her presence was a nuisance and not greatly welcomed. Even Devin, who loved his little sister, was agitated that he had to spend time with her now. If it had been voluntary it would be different. The girl clapped her hands at the prospect of playing hide and seek with her brother and his friend, clueless to the words passed between the boys. Devin smiled and nodded, seeming to catch on. "Okay! I have the best hiding spots. You'll never find me." Athena smiled and waited for Josh to turn around, Devin pretending to move in a direction to hide. The girl took off as he counted and went somewhere to hide. Devin chuckled. "Works for me I guess. She really does have good hiding places so it will probably take us a while anyway. And she'll sit there forever until you find her." Athena was stubborn and refused to simply give away her location. Where was the fun in that?
"Well, besides being shoved off my skateboard and getting in trouble with my aunt, not much," Devin replied, shrugging his shoulders. "Oh, I cloud watched, but that's not extremely exciting." Being somewhat of a lazy child he spent most of his time playing video games and watching cartoons. That was the way to spend a day. Now, when he was with Josh it was a bit different but when they conversed about how their days were going there was not much for Devin to give. 'I beat Crash Bandicoot for the third time!' Was not really exciting to everyone. He'd learned that. "What about you? Was your day at least somewhat fun? Had to be better than mine." He waited for a moment or two to nudge Josh and make sure he said 'ready or not, here I come!' otherwise Athena would get curious and come out of hiding simply to see if they were in fact looking for her. If they wanted to talk and hang out, they couldn't have her come looking for them. That would be one twisted hide and seek game. "Once Athena gets bored playing with us, whaddya wanna do?" Forever willing to please his best friend, Devin was really up for anything that entertained them both. This weekend was pretty care free, so Devin wanted to enjoy it while he could. Come Sunday afternoon he would be heading back to be with his father and step-mother; during which time he did not get much time to himself. Lauren, Devin decided, was the spawn of Satan and needed to be exorcised.

.PAY NO MIND _WHAT OTHER VOICES SAY -they don't care about you like i do ( like i do ) SAFE FROM PAIN, AND TRUTH, AND CHOICE AND OTHER POISON DEVILS Band-aids were never something that sat well with Josh. His father was a doctor and so it was hard to avoid getting treatment for all the bumps and scrapes of childhood but he did not like wearing band-aids over his cuts. It made him feel weak and he usually ripped them off almost immediately. Donovan would scold him and remind him sternly that it would take twice as long healing that way but he never really listened. "Bryce is stupid. Don't listen to him." As the words passed his lips, Joshua was quite aware of the fact that he was lying through his teeth to Devin. There was a twinge of conscience in the back of his mind, a prickling guilt that he ignored as usual. He'd trust you with anything and you're lying to him. He lied to everyone, though, why would Devin be special? At least Josh considered him a friend. "He's mad that Mum and Dad don't let him wander around by himself." Joshua was proud and independent, his parents had recognised his responsibility and rewarded it. Bryce was... he was different. Whenever he was left to his own devices he seemed to get into things, to mess them up. A lot of the times Josh got blamed for it and that really bothered the oldest Dale child. Just because he'd been born two years before Bryce didn't mean that his little brother could do no wrong. "He better not tell." Bryce knew that Josh hadn't gotten lost. Josh could tell that his brother knew.
He nodded at Devin, Athena probably wriggling her way into some spot or another by now. Josh really did plan on looking for her, he wasn't so cruel that he'd abandon her in a hiding spot while they snuck off to do something else, he merely planned to take his time in doing so. He called out so that Athena knew he was coming to look for her before turning his full attention back on the conversation with Devin. "Where's the fun in cloud watching?" He glanced at the fluffy, shapeless masses in the sky as if they would somehow give him an answer. He could respect the fact that Devin wasn't into the same things that he was but he didn't get it when people said that they saw shapes in the clouds. They were masses of moisture in the air, they weren't rabbits and ducks or any other sorts of things. He refrained from saying this to avoid insulting Devin and instead remarked, "I think they're cumulus clouds." They were big and white and puffy. They did slightly resemble cotton fluff but that was the closest thing to a shape that he saw in them. He normally had a quick and confident stride, eager to get where he was going, but Joshua walked slowly as he spoke with Devin and glanced around for signs of movement. He'd been good at hiding seek when he was little and the runt of the class, but he'd hit puberty and gotten his growth spurt early. He was proud of that. There were still guys in his class taller than him but at least most of the girls were shorter now.
When asked about his own day, Joshua knew immediately that he was going to avoid the entire truth. He wouldn't tell Devin about going to hang out with the gang. The rest of the day, however, was fair game. "You probably wouldn't think so," he disagreed. "I worked on a project for class and then I played chess with my Dad for a bit." The project was in French, as a good deal of his schoolwork was. The prestigious private school focused on teaching the children in both languages officially recognised by the Canadian government. He liked it well enough, even if it caused whiplash sometimes. Chess had been fun. His father hadn't won this time like he usually did. Josh was quickly learning to recognize patterns and openings that he could use to his advantage, planning two or three moves ahead so that he could be ready for anything. It could be irritating to play with him sometimes because his turn took a while but that was fine by him. He practiced himself sometimes, too. "I dunno, I kinda feel like exploring. Like the forest or something, but Judith wouldn't let you, would she?" He rolled his eyes a little. Sometimes parents and guardians could be a pain. He would have been willing to sneak off but he didn't think Devin would. "What've you got?" He knew Devin played a lot of games but that wasn't Josh's thing, just as Devin's was not chess. They were different people and yet they still managed to get along pretty well. "Your sister really is good at this whole 'hiding' thing," he remarked.

shoot it, shoot it out cause they want it a little more you can be rest assured , you give them all you got --------- --------- and you give them a little more Devin shrugged a little bit, smiling. "I find it fun," He replied, not really caring whether or not Joshua found it interesting. Everyone had their hobbies, their likes and dislikes, so this was no different. "I found a few really cool shapes, but other than that..." The blonde tilted his head to the side as though it were no big deal. He was lazy, he knew it, and cloud watching was a good way to pass the day without having to do much else. Devin quirked an eyebrow, apparently confused. "Cumulus?" He repeated, also looking up at the sky and watching the fluffy white clouds drift lazily by with no real set direction or purpose. "Hm, if you say so. They're just clouds to me." Devin was very intelligent, but he was also younger than Josh and some bits of information had not quite crossed his path. He decided that later on tonight he would probably hop on the computer and look up more about the clouds, simply out of curiosity. He liked to learn, just when he wanted to, and at his own pace. That, and he wanted to know what Josh knew. He liked to feel as though he were able to keep a conversation with his friends, and that was difficult if he was not aware of the facts. Devin knew he was not stupid though.
"Oh, well that sounds fun," Devin replied, scratching his head. "I don't think I've ever really tried to play chess. Is it fun? I'd like to play sometime." He was forever doing the things his friends wanted to do. Sure, he rebelled on occasion and did whatever pleased him, such as video games, but more often than not he was fairly obliging to Joshua and anyone else he spent time with. "I actually have an old chess set we could use one day. It's pretty cool." If Joshua was really that into chess, then maybe he would find interest in the old board. Devin never took the time to actually stop and try to play, mostly because no one else was around when he thought about playing. One sided chess was bound to be boring. Devin walked lazily onward, not really striving to search for his little sister. "That sounds like fun actually! My aunt won't care I don't think. So long as we don't go so far that we get lost." There were certain things he did not argue about with Judith, but he was rebellious and liked to do his own thing his own way. He did not speak out about Athena because that was his sister.
"Well, we've got a bunch of board games. Monopoly, Life, Risk, Clue...and we have video games of course. And we have the playground in the back yard too." Devin gestured towards the back of the house; once the children started spending more time with Judith, she decided to get them something set up for outside. A nice swing set with a fort and a sandbox underneath. A slide was tacked on the side. Although Devin was getting older he still enjoyed sitting up in the fort and reading or drawing 'comic books', which were basically stick figures wandering around on the page talking about how they were going to defeat the bullies at school. Devin nodded and chuckled a bit, peering around a bush but having no such luck. "Yeah she's actually really good. A ninja. A blonde little ninja." He waggled his fingers a bit, still unable to find the little girl. His guess was that she tried to be sneaky and went inside through the back door, thinking they would never search inside. Devin and Josh were not really trying all that hard to search anyway, so if she was in the house she would be in there for a long while yet.

.PAY NO MIND _WHAT OTHER VOICES SAY -they don't care about you like i do ( like i do ) SAFE FROM PAIN, AND TRUTH, AND CHOICE AND OTHER POISON DEVILS The boy of twelve kept his head tilted toward the sky, though he was not looking for the shapes that Devin had been seeing earlier. Instead he was scrutinizing the cloud cover with a penetrating and analytic gaze. A lot of the knowledge he had wasn't very useful to him but he did enjoy sharing it with other people, so when Devin repeated the word he grinned a little. "Yeah, cumulus. They're the fluffy ones." They reminded him of marshmallows, too, and suddenly Joshua found himself wanting some of the sticky treats. He was really a sucker for anything sweet, anything to do with chocolate or candy. His parents disapproved of how much candy he liked to eat so he often bought it and hid it around his room so that they didn't know. "Cirrus are the wispy ones and stratus are the hazy kind." Then there were all the sub-species of cloud but he wasn't going to go off into a cloud-related spiel right now. They looked to be cumulus humilis right now and he only hoped they didn't start to form stormclouds. He couldn't remember his parents warning him about rain, though, so he guessed not. His parents often pestered him whenever he was about to go out like he was six years old again and they were trying to help him cross the road. Did they think he was dumb? Green meant go, red meant stop. Yellow was the in-between as far as he was concerned, the warning that the lights were about to change. He felt the same way when they warned him to wear a jacket when it was cold. Duh.
Joshua considered Devin with a thoughtful frown. "I find it fun. Dunno if you would." He had long since come to terms with the fact that he was opposite of Devin in many ways. He was ambitious, Devin was lazy. He was aggressive, Devin was docile. He was deceptive, Devin naive. It was strange that the two of them were best friends but after so many years of knowing him, he didn't question it. They went to different schools and came from different walks of life, too, but that hadn't stopped them from meeting one another. "Takes a while to learn all the different pieces and strategies but I could teach you how to play some time." It would be nice to play chess with someone who wasn't his Dad. He still wasn't sure how someone who liked video games and cloud watching would enjoy sitting and strategizing but hey, maybe he was wrong in his assumptions. He liked tennis, after all. He was getting better at that. He hated most other sports because he was bad at them. Josh didn't like being bad at things, made him feel inadequate. It was part of the reason video games frustrated him. "Really? Cool, I guess we could do that, then." He was a curious person. Some would call him nosy, but Joshua didn't listen to them. He liked to explore and to get into things, to learn as much as he could about his surroundings. Exploring was a form of gaining knowledge through experience rather than reading from a book. Anyone could look at a picture of a forest but going inside of that forest was much more enthralling, even for a bookworm like himself.
Board games were okay. He liked card games better (the guys had taught him how to play poker, which was really fun) but at least they were better than video games. "I like Clue," he said thoughtfully. It involved figuring things out and he was good at that. "D'you think your sister'll want to play, too? It's not as good with only two people." He liked guy time with his best friend but if Judith was forcing Devin to accommodate Athena then a board game between the three of them was not something he was opposed to. They still hadn't found her after a while of walking around and this surprised him. "Where d'you think she's gone?" Either they were really bad at searching, which was possible (especially considering their minimal effort) or she was just as good at hiding as she said she was. He did not consider the fact that she might have snuck inside to hide from the boys, seeing as he wasn't that kind of clever.

shoot it, shoot it out cause they want it a little more you can be rest assured , you give them all you got --------- --------- and you give them a little more Devin made a small hum of acknowledgement in his throat as he scanned the heavens, now interested in why really lay beyond the basic forms of clouds. This was better than school, because it was something his friend had to share. It was not being forced on him, nor was he requested to study for it and take a test. It was just random bits of information to add to his arsenal of useless facts--at least, for now he considered them useless. He was only ten, after all. What sort of person--aside from possibly his aunt--would find true delight in hearing him spew out what a cumulus cloud was? People were always picking on him for his intelligence, so Devin strayed away from doing this as often as possible. "That's really neat, actually," The boy agreed, shifting his bright blue gaze towards Josh. "So what looks like a fluffy rabbit would really be a cumulus cloud." It was interesting that they were so different, but managed to form a friendship. Devin was lazy, liked video games, and was not a huge fan of school. Joshua was quite the opposite. That was not what mattered to Devin though. What mattered was that they got along in the first place. Josh did not pick on him for his intelligence (when he did display it) and they managed to keep one another remotely entertained. Sure they had other friends, but they were best friends.
"I won't know if it's fun until I try it, right?" Devin replied, raising his small eyebrow and smiling. He was not a daredevil by any means, but a game of chess was not exactly leaping from a ten story building and hoping to enjoy the fall down. He actually avoided pain if he could, being as clumsy as he was. Devin only wanted his scrapes and bruises to be on accident, not on purpose. "I don't mind learning at all. Even if I'm not the best, it can't hurt to at least know the basics." He was not a sore loser, either, and was not going to get upset if he could not get it right the first time or if he lost to Josh. It was not in his nature to do so. Winning always brought him a sense of accomplishment, but he never sought out to beat everyone in his path. If that were the case he probably would not get picked on in school. Devin clapped his hands together once, to signify that their plan was set in stone. Well, as set in stone as it could be. "Awesome! We'll do that one day then. Just...not today since we have to entertain an extra person." Devin wanted to act frustrated and roll his eyes, but it was difficult. Athena was his little sister after all. She could definitely drive him up the wall most days, but he was not going to completely toss her off.
Although Devin was a gamer, he enjoyed the simple board games that Judith had to offer. They were not as fast paced and action packed as he would like most of the time, but strategy was not beyond him. He and Josh were both intelligent people, just one of them liked to keep it forever tucked away into a little corner in a dark closet. "We can do Clue then," Devin replied, nodding. Clue was actually one of his more cherished games, and often times challenged his aunt to a round or two. Athena was still learning though, being so young, and they had to take it slow so they could teach her the process of elimination and creating educated guesses. "Oh, I'm sure she'll want to play. If it involves us, and board games, then yeah. We just...we actually have to find her first." By this point they had already reached the back of the house, the playground lurking nearby. The backdoor was opened slightly; Devin smirked and pointed at it and whispered, "I think I have a pretty good guess..." He jerked his head towards the door and walked up the few steps to go inside. He could smell food cooking, his mouth watering a little at the prospect of eating soon. The boy could put down food without any guilt. "Aunt Judith! Have you seen Athena? She's in one of her really good hiding spots again!" Judith peered out from the kitchen and smiled at the boys, shrugging slightly. "No I actually haven't. But hello Josh! Nice to see you." The woman pulled her head back in and Devin glanced around, deciding that he only had one option. "Well, I guess Athena gets to miss out on Clue!" He said a little louder than he probably should have. From the staircase you could see a little blonde head poking around the corner.
