Josh had called Skye out to the park -- well, it wasn't exactly like that so much as it was that he'd called to ask her to hang out, but somehow the way it was presented informed her that it was more than just wanting to catch up with a friend. While she certainly did want to hang out with a friend like Josh, and hopefully the feeling was reciprocal, it seemed to be a little bit more than simply that. It had seemed to have... something of a purpose, that was. This kind of boggled her mind a little, but she didn't ask -- if he wanted to tell her ahead of time, then he could and he would, but she doubted this. He would have just texted or called her in the first place then, if that were the case; whatever it was, it seemed that it had to be done in person. That was fine. Getting into town was a bit of trouble, but not much (a matter of knowing when the bus would be coming, really), and once she was there it was easy to find the park -- she knew her way around Maple Hollow pretty well at this point. Plus, Josh was a good friend. As a Thunder, Skye lacked too much loyalty, but for a friend, she was willing to go to some pretty great lengths, not that this could be considered a particularly bothersome task. She couldn’t deny that she was curious as to what was going on, too.
As it was a Saturday, she didn’t have much to do (well, that was an absolute lie, but to tell the truth she just didn’t want to deal with the enormous pile of things she had to do) and so she decided to leave and head into town a bit early, catching the early bus that came at around noon. It occurred to her only afterwards that maybe she should have had lunch, but that was alright -- she’d woken at around ten and eaten then already. She could find something to eat in town as well, because she had a bit of money, but she just made a beeline for the park instead. It was a nice day! It was strange that it was June already (time had apparently gone by extremely, extremely quickly for Skye), but now that there was June weather, she definitely wasn’t complaining, at least not until it was July and the heat became pretty much unbearable. For now, it was pretty decent. Headphones in her ears, she got to the park -- about forty-five minutes earlier than she had planned to meet Josh, actually, but she was alright with waiting, especially seeing as it was so nice out and she could just sit somewhere for a while.
They had plans to meet up by the park benches, which were basically all set up in a little area by themselves, but she instead opted for the shade of a nearby tree. Skye wasn’t much of an outdoorsy person, but this was admittedly better than sitting around bored at a park bench, as long as she wasn’t about to find spiders crawling up her legs or something. She could move later if that were the case, anyway -- but this spot seemed suitable, seeing as she could see the benches from here, for when Josh showed up. She checked the time on her phone again. The gist of it was time to wait.

Maybe calling Skye hadn't been the best idea when he told her he had some significant news that he wanted to share. Joshua lay on the couch with his hands folded on his chest and his phone resting underneath them, wondering if she'd think it was something horrible like a death in the family. Well it's not like I would have sounded upset, he reasoned, soothing his paranoia. This was far from a bad thing. Some people considered marriage (and engagement) to be like a ball and chain, imprisoning you. He didn't understand why these types decided to get married but he left them to their business. To him, nothing between he and Nell had changed except for the fact he could more confidently envision his future. He didn't have to factor in rejected proposals or another man. Well, she could always cheat on him, sure, but Joshua trusted her enough that he didn't take her to be the type. Even he wasn't the type. Brittney had approached during a moment of weakness and he'd managed to keep a hold of himself despite that she was hot and so obviously trying to get into his pants. I hope Skye takes it well, he thought, realising that his friend was a Thunder and her type usually didn't get along with the gentle-hearted Earths. It made sense to him just like it made sense that Fires and Waters were constantly at each other's throats, though there was much less of that now that he'd switched sides.
He got up slowly from the couch, not realising that Skye had already left to the park and that he was keeping her waiting. He figured he had a good half an hour or so to kill and so he did as any respectable Canadian would and stopped at a Tim Hortons. The coffee warmed him from the inside out and he was already finished the extra large by the time he pulled the snow-white Lamborghini into the parking lot, taking it with him and tossing it into the garbage can. There was a sign that screamed, 'DON'T LITTER' at passers-by and Josh really didn't understand why some people felt the need to. As the park was kept relatively clean, there were a lot of cans stationed at strategic points. There was even a couple on the more common trails in the forest so that people didn't dump their trash in the underbrush where some unsuspecting animal could choke. Despite that Maple Hollow was a city, he'd grown up on the outskirts in one of the grand mansions surrounded by land. It meant that he was used to the forests and the finer points of nature. He liked hiking in the mountains and discovering new paths through the forest. Today he wasn't here for sightseeing, however, and so Joshua sought out his friend when he finally did reach the park. He had arrived with a good ten minutes to spare himself, surprised to find Skye waiting for him.
"I didn't expect to see you," he said, lifting his brows. He had expected her, just not this early. "Have I kept you waiting?" He didn't like to make people wait if he arranged to meet with them. Joshua was many things; rude was not one of them. Raking an absent hand through his black hair, he considered the benches and then shrugged, sitting down beside her. He liked the shady place underneath the tree, though he didn't remove the sunglasses that he wore. Josh loved sunglasses and most of his friends were used to seeing him in a variety of different pairs. Given that they'd been friends for years, he expected Skye was no exception. "Glad you could come, really. I know myself how much of a hell college can be." It was his little way of thanking her for showing up without saying the words directly. He didn't want to jump right into the news of the afternoon and so he said, "Did I interrupt anything important? I hope not. How are you?"

It turned out that Josh was early too, though granted not as early as she was, but one would have been pretty hardpressed to accomplish that -- taking the early bus had gotten her out here pretty damn early. She could have been rather content to just sit there and wait, too, but she definitely wasn't about to complain when Josh did show up about... ten minutes earlier than expected, according to the time on her iPod. She turned it off, however, shoving it with the headphones back into her purse and waving as he approached -- luckily neither of them had missed the other, so they'd spotted one another at the same time. "Well, you were the one who asked me to come out here," she pointed out, though she knew what he meant. She was just teasing, really, and she was sure that he knew so as well as she did. "But no, not really, don't worry about it," she assured him, shrugging a bit and motion for him to sit, though she wasn't sure he saw it considering he'd looked away toward the benches momentarily. Maybe she'd have to get up -- but no, he sat down, and Skye relaxed again, leaning back against the trunk of the tree now. It was hot -- too hot, she thought, to move, so she was glad that Josh planted himself down next to her without prompt.
She closed her eyes for a few seconds, just sitting back and giving her eyes a break from the brightness that was, er, the general outdoors in the summertime. Hopefully he didn't mind -- she definitely wasn't sleeping or anything, just feeling lazy in the heat of the day. When he started speaking, Skye opened her eyes again, smiling a bit at her friend. "It's nothing, don't worry." College really was pretty awful -- Joshua, she was sure, knew that better than anyone anywhere, being such a stickler for anything to do with academics... not that this was a bad thing. Everyone else, including herself, could stand to be a little bit more school-oriented... but if that were the case, she would probably be doing homework at the moment rather than sitting here, and she wouldn't have chosen that. "Though college can be pretty hectic." This was only true, of course, if by "pretty hectic" she really meant "overwhelmingly, allconsumingly, mindblowingly hectic" -- the kind of stuff she couldn't even have dreamt of back in her final year of high school when she'd decided for sure that she would be returning for college. Probably the truly difficult part, though, was the actual elemental part of it, much more than the sheer amounts of work could possibly amount to.
"'Course not," she answered, assuming he meant interrupted anything earlier when he'd called, rather than right now -- it was pretty obvious, at least she thought so, that she wasn't doing anything right now. When he'd called earlier, she'd really just been sitting around bored, so this was definitely a welcome change of pace. Plus, she really just didn't see Josh enough, for someone who was such a good friend. "Hmmm, I'm doing fine." There was nothing particularly noteworthy going on in her life, anyway. "And yourself?" She was still sure that he'd asked her to come out here for some reason other than just to make small talk, but he'd probably get to that when he did. Luckily, it just didn't sound like the news she could be expecting was anything bad. That was good.

He did not realise that Skye had taken respite from the heat under the tree and so the choice to sit down underneath it was purely for the sake of convenience. His friend seemed quite content sitting where she was and he certainly wasn't so fussy that he was worried about sitting on the ground, so he compromised his own desire to sit on a bench for something with a more nature-oriented feel. Sitting down in the grass reminded him of warm summer dyas spent sitting in his backyard and staring down at the lake, the waters clear as glass and sparking in the blazing sunlight. He hated the water but it was sure nice to look at. Normally he was alone, so spending this particular day at a park with a friend was a welcome change. Summer was not his favourite month but he enjoyed it nonetheless. It would be crazy for any Fire elemental to truly hate it, seeing as their powers and stamina were strongest during its peak. "You know what I meant," he said, lifting an eyebrow but smirking to show he recognised the joke. He liked joking with Skye because they were both so serious that they confused most, but not each other. There were still times when he was not sure whether something she said was literal or in jest and he was sure this was mutual but they at least had better odds than other people.
He noticed when she closed her eyes but made no comment on it, figuring that she was just comfortable or something. He did not consider people to be rude unless they did things that truly offended him. If she had fallen asleep then he might have had something to say about it. "Mm," was his wordless reply when she agreed with him on college. Everyone was cramming for the final exams before the summer and Josh was not much of an exception. He did not feel the same last-minute panic that others did because he did not leave studying until the last minute but he did feel the stress. He was confident in his intelligence and abilities but exams were still worrisome until the very day when the results came in. He would not be at peace until he knew his scores. "That's good to hear." He liked to know when his friends were doing alright and only hoped that she was telling the truth. He assumed that she was, for she seemed quite happy, but it was always impossible to tell with people. Especially Joshua himself. He always said he was fine when he wasn't and he said that he was fine when he was, as well. There was no distinction. Nell can see through it sometimes, he mused to himself. Nell. She was the reason for this entire meeting and his lips twitched briefly at the thought of her.
Figuring that there was no point in beating around the bush for ages before he pointed it out, Joshua decided that he would cut to the chase pretty quickly. "I'm great," he said. "Better than great, actually. I'm engaged." He grinned at his friend, gray eyes glittering with a combination of mischief and delight. He paused for a moment to both let the news sink in and assure his friend that he was not kidding around. He never understood people who pulled jokes on their friends concerning big things like pregnancy and marriage. Yes, it was funny, but it could also be cruel if you got them excited (or worse, frightened) for no reason. He leaned back on his hands and allowed an easy smile to grace his lips. It was a lot easier for him to smile lately. It was not only Nell who contributed to his contentment but she was certainly the biggest part of the picture, of that he was sure. She gave him what no one else could. Someone he could trust completely and unconditionally, on a level that his friends could hope to achieve but hadn't quite yet. "You're one of my closest friends, so I figured it was better you hear it from me—and in person—than from anyone else. Especially since I doubt Nell would be the one to tell you." He was completely unaware of the fact that his fiancée and Skye were ever acquainted at all, so in his words he was referring to the fact that they were not "allowed" to interact, similar to how this very meeting was forbidden by the rules.

She nodded in response to everything he said, figuring that she could let him get on with what he had wanted to say in the first place. It was probably more important than their idle small talk, anyway, even though it was always nice to catch up on the little things -- but if this were something big, it had to be a little bit more than something that trivial. Important enough to call someone out to town... and important enough to meet up with someone they were, by the standards of most other Academy students, not supposed to talk to at all. Of course, that hadn't stopped them in the past, but this time was definitely a little different, and she wasn't sure why. Actually, Josh seemed a little bit different overall, and definitely not for the worse, but she didn't and couldn't possibly figure out what could have brought on this change, not until he actually came out and said it. When he did, though, she shot up -- not actually so that she was standing, but so that she was sitting straight up, her eyes wide as she looked at him. "You're not!" she exclaimed in disbelief, but it was in a pleasantly surprised tone, and Skye could hear the warmth in her own voice, something that was actually pretty rare -- she was normally much more serious.
"Josh, that's -- no way! That's awesome!" Without even thinking about it, she'd closed the distance between them and pulled her friend into a hug. Displays of affection weren't uncommon for Skye, who believed that actions spoke volumes louder than words, but even after years of knowing Josh, she was never sure what protocol was for such things with him. It wasn't like they'd never hugged before or anything, but it was perhaps less frequent than it would be with most of her other friends -- she was more often than not pretty touchy-feely. She finally relinquished him and retreated a little bit, grinning. "Seriously, that's... pretty amazing." It really, really was great news. Skye couldn't pretend that she knew Nell very well, and she knew that there were any number of issues with this, but really, Josh wasn't even aligned with the other Fires and Thunders anymore. He'd been on the "other side" for quite a long time, and she personally felt that at this point, anyone who still wished it to be otherwise was wasting their time and breath. He'd made that call when things had gotten serious with Nell, or at least that had been a big part of it, and now it seemed like he was going all into this relationship. Nell was a sweet girl, too! She was, perhaps, not the type that Skye would immediately want to befriend, but she could see why Josh liked her. Loved her, even, really, considering the fact that they were engaged now. (She assumed it was with Nell, at least -- it would be bad, perplexing news if he'd gotten engaged to someone else.)
She beamed at him, suddenly full of questions and genuine happiness, a pretty strange transformation from her usual serious composure, but she felt that in this case it was understandable. This was definitely pretty exciting news. She was happy, also, that Josh would think to confide in her and let her know in person -- it was nice to realize that they were close friends (one of the closest, even!), that she was on the list of people Josh would want to tell in person about important things."Congratulations! When? How?" she asked, no longer looking quite as giddy but still smiling slightly. His mention of Nell, that she wouldn't be the one to tell Skye, reminded her dimly of some months ago when they'd spoken. When had that been? Back sometime... February? She couldn't remember exactly, but they certainly hadn't spoken since, so Josh was definitely right in that. He probably didn't even know they'd ever met, come to think of it, but that wasn't too important right now -- her friend was engaged, and that was definitely, definitely a pretty big deal in Skye's eyes.

Joshua found that he quite enjoyed anticipating the reactions of his various friends, amused by the way that some of them hit him and others dropped their jaws in shock. Ace had all but choked on his drink and Devin had looked like he was going to cry when Joshua asked him if he would be the best man when the wedding eventually happened. Skye's contribution was apparently going to be a hug, something that Joshua had not quite been expecting. He recovered from his shock after a second or two and chuckled, returning the hug without much hesitation. He wasn't the type to often cuddle up with his friends—Nell was a different story, but they were going to be married so that made sense. All the same, he was not one to object when a friend hugged him and would sometimes initiate the contact if he felt the need. "Yeah," he agreed, and there was warmth in his own voice as well. He was grinning, not smiling but grinning as his friend released him and he looked at her. "It is pretty great, isn't it? I can still barely believe it myself sometimes." He'd known Skye for years. She'd been around for the times when he'd sleep with various girls and commit to none of them, a drifter in the sense of relationships. Now he was happily committed and engaged to be married. It didn't surprise him that some of his friends were shocked and even glad to see that chapter of his life closed. He was certainly happy to see its end.
He chuckled softly as she asked two questions at once, pausing for a moment to decide which he would answer first. 'When' seemed to be the easiest. "When we got engaged? A few months ago. As for the wedding..." He trailed off and smirked at the thought. "We haven't set a date quite yet," he told her. "We're not in any rush. It wasn't for... specific reasons." He paused for a moment and raised his brows in order to let that sink in. It was his way of assuring his close friend 'no, Nell isn't pregnant, don't worry' without actually saying the words. He had gotten that question from a few people and his father had asked him when he went to Donovan for advice. The moment Josh had mentioned the words 'Nell' and 'proposal' in the same sentence, Donovan had wanted to know if there was a baby involved. Everyone has so much faith in me, he thought sarcastically. He was more responsible than that. Nell had college, he had college, they weren't ready for kids. He didn't even know if his fiancée wanted kids. I really should ask. It was inconvenient to want to spend the rest of your life with someone whilst not knowing whether their desires for the future would click with yours. "Once we know, you will," he promised, as he would with all his closest friends. "You'll be invited, of course... if Nell agrees." He hesitated, taking their elements into account, then smiled. "I'm sure she won't mind. She's great, really nice and all."
He closed his mouth there so that he didn't embarrass himself with flattering Nell through praise. He loved her but he didn't want to come off as a complete softie. The man had limits. "As for how... well, it depends on what you mean by that?" He was not sure whether Skye was asking him about how they'd gotten engaged and how he'd proposed to Nell or how they were getting married, so he allowed her to clarify that before he answered. "So that's why I dragged you out here," he concluded with another smile. He was smiling a lot today. Mention of Nell and his future with her was almost always guaranteed to put him in a good mood and the company of a good friend was helping to better it even further. He leaned back in the grass lazily, staring up at the sky. Man, he loved the summer months. They were so warm and comforting to a Fire elemental like him. "How have things been with your family and all that?" He did not like keeping the entire conversation focused on himself, both because it felt odd and because he felt selfish. The engagement was huge news, great news, but it did not make him the centre of the universe. Joshua realised that.

It was nice, in a way, to see Josh that happy. It wasn't that he normally looked angry, or sad, or anything like that, but he rarely looked this genuinely happy and just overall pleased with life. It was definitely a nice change -- if this was Nell's doing, if she was the reason for this positive change in mood, then Skye was most certainly glad she was around. Actually, if she actually took the time to think about it, she'd probably find that many things had changed in Josh since he and Nell had gotten together... and then gotten serious, no less. It was also strange because she realized that Nell hadn't known Josh before, either -- wouldn't necessarily know about the all of the girls he'd been with over the years and all the stupid things he'd done as a teenager. She'd been different at the time too, of course, but she was actually pretty sure that, the way she was now, she wouldn't have tolerated half of the things Josh had done. Fortunately, they were still friends today. Josh had really come a long way in getting things together. "Definitely, yeah. I can't even imagine..." she trailed off, but she smiled at him still, mostly just thinking about how unexpected all of it was. Josh and Nell were pretty young, too... but from what she knew, neither of them were stupid, so she would give them the benefit of the doubt.
It didn't seem they were in any particular rush to get married, anyway, based on his answers, which was reassuring. A small part of her was a bit disappointed that it had been months since they'd been engaged, which meant she was pretty late in finding out -- the rest of her, though, knew how difficult it was these days to just get together and talk for once. She definitely wasn't about to hold it against him. "I believe you," she told him with a slight twitch of the lips -- the idea that Nell might have been pregnant wasn't something that had occurred to her, actually, probably because she considered Josh to be too smart to mess things up like that. (A baby wasn't necessarily bad news, of course, and neither was a marriage, but they were pretty stressful things to have to worry about while attending school, of all things.) She smiled at the idea that she would know about the wedding, though, but wondered how awkward it would be if she were to attend. Many of Josh's friends now, she was sure, would have to be Water and Earth, based on the entire shifting of the alliances... Nothing would happen, most likely, except for some mild awkwardness -- not that any level of that would prevent her from actually going to the wedding, if she were invited. "Well, I can only hope then," she said with a small smile, "but, you know, I'd understand if she'd rather not." Nell had seemed alright with her that one time they'd spoken, but it was hard to be sure of anything really. For some, the elements and associated alliances were pretty serious. "Hey, I kind of met and talked to Nell a while ago, you know," she said suddenly, not wanting to interrupt the excitement of this engagement news but deciding that, while they were on the subject of Nell anyway, it was as good an opportunity as ever to tell him. She wasn't even really sure why, except that it sort of seemed like the thing to do.
She considered what he said next for a moment -- she'd really mostly just been saying whatever came to mind without thinking about it: a rare thing for Skye, but now that she was back to what was more or less normalcy she would think about it a bit. "How did you get engaged, I think, mostly," she clarified after a second. "Though I wouldn't object if you just told me everything, it just means I have to ask fewer questions later." She was teasing for the most part, but it wasn't entirely dishonest -- she wouldn't refuse anything he'd like to tell her, that was for sure. This was pretty exciting news, after all -- she felt that it was worth talking about. "Well jeez, you dragged me all the way out here just for that?" she asked, once again teasing, though her face remained serious this time, mostly over the excitement of the moment, though she could still feel her face twitching a bit every so often -- she was just... genuinely happy for the two of them. When conversation sort of turned back to herself, she hummed a single note for a moment before answering. "Same as always, really." Seeing as term was almost over, it'd been a while since she'd seen her family all the way back in Ottawa, but she kept in touch when she could. "I figure I'll be back in Ottawa over the break, so that should be fun." She wasn't sure of the exact plans yet, but it would be nice to see her parents for the first in a few months. "How about you?"

[Realised that both of us have Marianas Trench signatures. -high fives-]
It was always good to know that his friends had faith in him and that not everyone was going to jump to conclusions and assume they were getting married because he'd knocked Nell up. He'd never gotten anyone pregnant to his knowledge because he was careful and not at all as stupid as some people seemed to think. His intelligence was not solely academic, he had logic and reasoning as well as common sense. He knew that he didn't want to be that guy, so he wasn't. Surprise flickered across his features when Skye mentioned having met Nell and he smiled for a moment before it faltered. His friend had not mentioned anything about them hitting it off and so he worried for a moment that they might have gotten into an argument but as Skye didn't say anything about that, either, he hesitated to jump to conclusions. "You did? Did it go alright?" If it hadn't, he'd try and talk to Nell to smooth things over so that his friend could still come to the eventual wedding. She was an understand girl and he was sure they could work something out. Even if the two were to remain at odds with one another, Josh would still keep his relationship with Nell and his friendship with Skye. The two things were not linked—he hated Nell's friend Ethan (or at least strongly disliked him) and that didn't get in the way of his relationship with Nell. He was determined that it would work the same in reverse.
Chuckling at her comment, Joshua dipped his head in acknowledgement and went silent for a moment as he tried to piece together what he would say and how best to put it into words. "Well it's not like I can claim I was very original," he said amusement threading through his tone. "I took her out to dinner and I proposed to her." He left out the fact that it was at the end of a game of twenty questions, not wanting to explain how that game was like their 'thing' as a couple. It was how he'd originally asked her out and so he'd decided that it would be the way he asked her to marry him, as well. He wondered if Nell had caught onto that yet and whether she appreciated the thought he'd put into it. He hoped so. He wasn't the type to go all-out with an engagement at a stadium or anything like that, not having wanted to put her on the spot in front of other people, but he had at least given it some consideration. "She thought I was kidding at first but at least she said yes when she caught on." He grinned and the glee was plainly evident in the whole of his expression. He would have been rather crushed if Nell had turned him down because it would have meant that their relationship wasn't quite as solid as he thought that it was. "I would have told you sooner but we were dealing with things. Most of my friends have only found out recently." He didn't want Skye to think she was the last to know or anything.
He was used to a lot of his friends going home over the summer break and so he nodded when Skye mentioned Ottawa. "I'll be around the Hollow, most likely." He was still staying with Nell and unless she planned a spontaneous move to Vancouver he was there to stay. Then again, he wasn't sure he'd pack his bags and move out of the city on such short notice. He loved Nell but he had family in the Hollow as well. Not like it's going to happen, anyway. "Got any plans with the family?" He knew that him and Nell were going to Spain at the end of summer break and he was quite excited for the experience. He had gotten the tickets for Christmas, mainly for Nell so that she could go. She'd mentioned a desire to head there once and he'd figured it would make the perfect gift. She'd certainly been appreciative. "My family are great," he smiled. "Nell, too, though she's practically family anyway." He considered her a part of his family even if it hadn't been made official with wedding bands and vows quite yet. He looked forward to that day, even if it was far in the future. "My sister starts at the Academy next year. I'm sure she'll not shut up about it all summer." She wouldn't be starting until January but Annabel was already excited.

(haha yessss, boss! <3 marianas trench ftw.)
It was kind of cute that he'd care, actually -- Skye wasn't about to go telling him so, because like most twenty-or-so-year-olds, he would probably consider the word "cute" to be an assault on his masculinity, or something ridiculous like that... but it was nice, the tone in his voice, as he questioned after how their meeting had gone. She almost wondered what he'd say if she answered that it was either of the two extremes -- that they now either hated each other, or had become best friends. Of course, neither was the case, and she wouldn't lie to him just to mess with him, at the very least not in this case. He seemed pretty genuinely concerned with whether or not things had been alright, anyway, so she just nodded, quickly reassuring him, "It went fine!" She didn't really know what else to say about the encounter with Nell, mostly because it had been so random and started mainly on her part, something that, for those who knew Skye at all, was pretty unlike her. "She's really nice -- I can see why you like her," was all she said by way of explanation, not wishing to delve further into the details unless she was asked, but she kept her expression and tone pleasant, hopefully letting him know that she was telling the truth. She wouldn't have lied for a friend's sake, anyway, though -- she was pretty adamant on telling the truth unless literally, absolutely necessary.
"That's definitely sweet though," she told him with a slight smile. He was probably right about the originality factor, but then again, this was real life, not a movie -- besides that, although she wouldn't pretend to know what Josh and Nell's relationship was like, it was difficult to imagine Josh doing something completely bizarre or anything. The image in her mind was kind of cute, anyway, if a bit one-sided because she didn't know Nell enough to be sure how she would respond to, er, a proposal. The "original" proposals had been a little bit overplayed in fiction, anyway. Her lips twitched a bit at the thought of Nell thinking it'd been a joke, though -- she would have probably thought the same thing of anyone who proposed to her. That or not quite realized that it was happening and just stood there obliviously -- hopefully the former as opposed to the latter... or hopefully just figuring out that it was a genuine request. "Well, that's always good," she said, laughing a little. The whole thing was pretty incredible overall -- exciting news to be sure. "No, I understand," she answered with a nod. "Hopefully nothing too troubling though?" Skye didn't mean to pry, but dealing with things sounded a little bit ominous for a recently engaged couple... unless he really did just mean dealing with the usual, couple-y things. This was definitely more serious a relationship than Skye had ever been in, now that they were getting
[/i]married[/i]. It was still a very weird thought that a friend of hers was going to be getting married already. That definitely made sense, she thought, nodding. Josh did live here, after all. Unless he'd be heading off on a vacation or something, of course, which she supposed was possible too. He hadn't yet mentioned anything about that, though, but whether or not it was happening, she was sure it'd be a nice month for everyone to be relaxing and generally not doing (school)work. "A month around the Hollow doing absolutely nothing sounds nice," she replied. "And I'm not exactly sure yet... I think we're spending two weeks or something down in the States." By the States, she meant California and nearby, but she couldn't remember the exact plans. Her parents had said something about it, but she hadn't heard about a proper date or anything like that -- but her mom, being a teacher, also had the month (plus August) off for summer, and her dad was able to kind of make his own schedule due to the nature of his work, so it worked out nicely enough when Skye had a break during July. California would be nice, at least... but hot. She wasn't sure it'd be too much fun. "What about you? Vacation plans?" She nodded, smiling, when he said that his family (and Nell) were doing well. "That's good to hear." His family was nice, though she couldn't claim to know them particularly well... and Nell was definitely very nice, if not someone Skye would imagine she'd become best friends or anything with anytime soon. "Ah, true, I remember that! Getting a bit ahead of herself there, though," Skye joked, referring mostly to the fact that, after all, school years didn't start until January at the Academy. Joshua breathed a sigh of relief when Skye assured him that it had gone alright, lips twitching into a genuine smile. "That's good, I'm glad to hear it." He certainly wouldn't have liked sacrificing a connection with either one of them for the sake of the other but that didn't mean it wasn't easier when they got along at least on a moderate level. They were acquainted, which saved awkward pre-wedding introductions in the eventual future, and they did not loathe one another, which saved him from trying to mediate any disagreements. It made him uncomfortable to realise that if any of his friends started a real disagreement with Nell, he'd likely take the girl's side if he was forced to choose one. It was not that he did not love his friends but his love for Nell was something different, deeper. He wouldn't ignore his friends for her sake but he protected her above all else, regardless of whether she actually needed protecting. It wasn't that he saw Nell as a damsel in distress—he didn't think so low of her—but that it pained him to see her hurt in any way. It was almost embarrassing to admit that he was so soft around Nell, which was probably why he didn't profess it often. "She really is," said Joshua, nodding when Skye remarked on how nice Nell was. It was common in Earth elementals. Not that the other elementals couldn't be nice, Earths were just known for it. "I'm lucky to have her." He did consider himself so.
Joshua ducked his head a little sheepishly when she remarked on it being 'sweet', not used to such words being applied to him or the things that he did for people. It was not an unwelcome compliment, however, and he smiled his thanks at her. He liked to know when he was doing things right. Josh was confident and didn't mind giving himself his only direction when it came to guidance but it was always beneficial to have others voice their approval to back up your certainty that what you were doing for someone was the right thing. He was glad that he'd proposed to Nell, glad that he was able to finalise that connection in such a way. It had gone from never to forever in a short period of time—once the trial was over and he no longer had to fear his then-girlfriend going to prison for murder, there had been nothing stopping them from making things a little more concrete. "Oh, no, nothing bad!" he said quickly when he realised how that might have sounded. He was so used to being utterly secretive even with friends that he'd been unintentionally cryptic. "Normal things, completely normal." It was not entirely a lie. Most of the terrible things were in the past. "It gets hard to juggle school, work, and my relationship is all. So I've been a bit busy. But we're alright, don't worry." He smiled to back up this statement.
He listened as Skye mentioned a possible vacation to the States with her parents, nodding. He went on vacations with his parents sometimes and he rather enjoyed seeing other places, even if they didn't leave the country. The trip to the Maritimes had been lovely and his fiancee had come, too, which made it all the better. "That sounds like fun," he remarked. "Whereabouts, do you know?" It wasn't too personal and he might have asked it even if it was a little personal, knowing that a friend this close to him would be well aware they had the option of not answering. Joshua was very respectful of boundaries and would understand refusal to answer even the silliest, stupidest of questions. It was what came with being secretive. "Oh, yeah. Nell and I are heading to Spain for a week. She's taught me some Spanish, can't wait to try it out on the locals." He grinned and seemed excited by the prospect. He liked travelling and he liked it even more so when he had someone he loved as company. The plane tickets had been a gift to her from him on Christmas, after all. He had recalled her mentioning a desire to see Spain and acted promptly on the holiday. "Ah, don't we all," he said, remembering his own summer before the Academy and how much he'd wished it started along with the normal school year so he didn't have to wait so long.

She grinned a bit, amused at his apparently relief. Even if it hadn't gone too well, Skye hoped that she and Nell would have been able to get past their differences and deal with them for Joshua's sake. He was a good friend, and Nell's boyfriend -- er, fiancé, that was -- and she wouldn't have wanted to put him in an awkard position because of this. She also knew, though, that he was extremely likely to pick Nell over most any of his friends, and she wasn't foolhardy enough to think of herself as an exception. She knew, understood, and accepted the fact that Josh and Nell were now serious enough for him to make those types of decisions even simply based on instinct... Hopefully he knew what he was doing. He didn't seem the type to rush into these things, though. "She is," she confirmed again, nodding, though she was sure that it was getting redundant at this point. It was definitely no less true, though -- Skye had come into contact with few people so genuinely nice before. Something about it made her feel a bit guilty for some reason. A small smile lingered on her lips, though, when he mentioned being lucky -- Josh and Nell had been dating for what seemed like ages (probably mostly because it had been so riddled with drama due to their alliances, among other things) but she rarely heard him say things like that. "Yeah. You guys definitely beat the odds for sure, you know. I'm really happy for you." Hopefully it didn't come off as if she'd thought they were doomed to fail or anything like that, but in reality, it was probably at least somewhat true. Everything had been against them.
She tried to refrain from using such words as "sweet" aloud in the future when referring to Josh, when she saw his reaction -- the duck and the rather sheepish look on his face. It was probably not something he heard every day, if what she saw of him and remembered of him when they'd hang around other friends back in the day could be any indication. Of course, things had changed a great deal since then. "That's good," she answered, and she meant it -- it would be unfortunate for a... well, recently engaged couple (she still couldn't get over the fact, which probably meant she was going to just think it until she got used to it) to be facing anything bad already. She nodded in understanding once he listed off the things -- all perfectly normal things, it seemed, but she was glad that they were all fairly normal and nothing actually bad. School, of course, was normal enough, and she didn't see how it would be the same if it weren't at all stressful, to be perfectly honest. As for work, she herself didn't have a job at the moment, thinking herself busy enough as it was, but... perhaps next year. Just perhaps, if she found that she had the time to. Until then it was what she could save over breaks and help from her parents. She could see why that would occupy a huge amount of Josh's time, though. The relationship, then... well, she'd be more surprised if a relationship wasn't busy. "Busy beaver! I honestly don't know how you manage to do so much." Skye had enough issues keeping her own schoolwork and personal life organized, and hers was far from being as eventful as his.
"Somewhere warm -- California probably," she said, but she wasn't sure of too many details other than that she and her parents were going on the first vacation in quite some time. They'd gone on trips quite frequently back when she'd lived at home, before coming to the Academy, but now that she'd been here for what was coming on seven years now, it'd been quite some time as there wasn't always time for them to spare when she was on break. "As if it's not hot enough here already, right?" she complained a bit, but listened, interested, to his plans for Spain. She'd been to Spain once, when she'd travelled the world on one of her family's aforementioned trips, but it hadn't been extensive, probably nothing like what Josh now had in mind. He was only going for a week, apparently, but that still sounded like a pretty amazing trip. "What, that's awesome!" she exclaimed, actually feeling a bit excited for the two of them. Spain was definitely a beautiful place, vastly different from Canada (not that Canada wasn't beautiful as well, of course, but even so). "Whereabouts in Spain? Or just kind of everywhere?" she asked. Given the choice, she'd probably have still chosen to head to Spain than to somewhere as incredibly hot as California, but she supposed that it was better than bumming around for a month. "Definitely," she said, smiling a bit wistfully. "Probably for even longer than just that last summer, too... How will it work for Annabel, anyway? Will she just transfer out of her school now come January?"

It was common for people to question Joshua's work ethic—common enough that he was used to it, at least. His lips twitched and he shrugged. "I like staying busy. I get bored with nothing to do." It was a shame that he either seemed to be too busy for friends or not busy enough to keep him content. He juggled fairly well and was glad to have such understanding friends that knew he could not be around to hang out every other day. He was a good friend when given the chance. It was harder with Skye than with his friends in Earth and Water because they could not hang around one another at school. It made him feel bitter when they had a class together and he had to pretend like they were completely indifferent. He did not expect Skye to switch alliances, however, and he wouldn't switch back even if given the option, so it was necessary. "Cali, huh? Have you been before?" He chuckled when she mentioned the heat. "Right? I don't mind, but that's just me." Well, Joshua and most Fire elementals. Skye was not from his element and so though he could try to describe the feeling of power and energy that the summer heat gave him, she'd never truly know how it felt. Then again, the Thunders had the winter to shine in. He wondered what their sense of power felt like. Joshua hated the winter, hated the cold and the way that it weakened his power. Summer did that for Thunder elementals. The allies were opposites. "Do you like the heat?" he asked.
His friend's reaction amused him and Joshua's lips twitched into a smile. He was excited for the trip to Spain and her words made him feel a pulse of that excitement. "Anywhere and everywhere, I hope," he said. "I've never been so I want to see as much as I can." He enjoyed museums and historical sights, he wanted to see a bull fight with Nell, he wanted to explore the country and experience the culture. He really did want to practice his Spanish, too, and there was no better place to practice a language than its homeland. "We'll be staying just outside of Madrid but I definitely want to branch out." Madrid was a well-known city along with places like Barcelona but he didn't care whether a place was well known or not. If it had something interesting to be witnessed, he wanted to see it. He was mostly going to trust Nell as his guide considering she seemed to know the culture a lot more than he did. There were several places important to history that he planned to drag her off to, however. Not that it would be dragging seeing as she seemed more excited than he was. "Have you been to Spain?" Some families took trips and so he figured he would ask. He'd been quite a few places with his. He liked family vacations because they allowed him to spend time with his loved ones while at the same time experiencing a different place, somewhere new.
Joshua shook his head. "Nah, my parents don't see the point of enrolling her in high school for a few months and then transferring her to the Academy." Annabel was going to have an extended summer break—six months instead of the usual two. He wondered how she would cope with the shortened summer break of only a single month once she enrolled into the Academy but figured his little sister would adapt. She wasn't as fond of school as he was but she was excited about acquiring and learning her power. He hoped for her sake she was Fire. She wanted it so terribly. "If she doesn't get her powers they'll just start her in late. She says she's willing to take that risk." After all, a family with such strong genetics didn't have much chance of bearing a child with dormant powers. It was still possible, just not so likely that they were worried. "I can hardly wait for January myself," he confessed. "It'll be so weird when we're seniors!" He laughed, smiling at the thought. His true aspiration was to graduate and get the hell out of the Academy, get into medical school, start really learning. Not that he hated the Academy. He loved the school, part of the reason he'd chosen to go to college there instead of in a much more prestigious school. He was confident he could have gotten into one if he'd tried.

Skye was pretty sure that she asked him the exact question she just had at least once every few months, but despite this, she felt the need to ask again and again. It was a pretty difficult concept for her to grasp, apparently. It was sort of funny how different she and Josh were though, while at the same time being so... similar. It was a bit weird how that could work, but they -- the differences between the two of them, that was -- were things that she had gotten used to. It didn't bother her, and never had really, except for the occasional times when they'd been younger and Josh had been slightly more rebellious than now. (Of course, going against his alliance could be said to be far more rebellious than anything he'd done before, but Skye somehow didn't consider it so.) "Well, you're quite the multi-tasker," she said with the briefest of smiles. It definitely wasn't a bad thing in any way -- a compliment really, if he could get past the fact that she was basically just intrigued with that ability of his. She nodded to answer his question. "Yeah -- I mean, yeah Cali, but no I haven't been before," she clarified, shaking her head a bit now. She probably looked demented. That was okay. "Yeah... you guys usually seem pretty comfortable in the heat," she added thoughtfully, referring to all Fires in general when she said you guys. "But nah, it's not really my thing." Winter was definitely more her thing, if she were to pick between the two extreme elements, but even then, it was only enjoyable and useful if she were actually trying to use her element. Otherwise, it really just felt cold -- she didn't think it was exactly the same principle as the Fires with heat, but similar perhaps.
She grinned, amused at all the exciting news she was hearing from Josh today. Neither of these things, of course, had a particular effect on her own life really, other than the fact that now one of her friends was engaged and about to go to Spain, a really really cool-seeming place, but they were still worth getting excited over as far as Skye was concerned. "Good," she confirmed with a nod. "Not fun to stay confined in one place when you're visiting somewhere like that." It wasn't really fun to stay confined in one place anyway, but when visiting somewhere overseas, Skye herself would have liked to go out and see anything and everything she could. Josh was pretty inclined towards learning and history, if she understood anything about him at all -- he was probably the same. "Take pictures! Bring me back something!" she instructed, but it was mostly in jest (though she obviously wouldn't say no to just a little trinket from Spain, and certainly not to pictures of everything he was going to see while there). "I have," she answered. "Well, only briefly. Probably shorter than you're going for... It's a great place, though." She was quiet for a moment, recalling fond memories of Spain and of all the other places she had been in the months she'd spent travelling with her parents, then decided to voice this aloud. It wasn't something entirely personal, but nothing she made a habit of informing the world of, either, mostly because it didn't come up often in conversation and she knew she would be annoyed with someone constantly talking up all the places they'd been before. "I spent a few months travelling with my parents, my own summer before the Academy." Summer and a bit anyway, considering she'd also taken off the first few months of regular school, like Annabel was now to do, according to Josh.
"That makes sense," she said. She was sure that many elementals did the same before they came to study their element -- just took off the first few months of high school, or wherever they were coming from. There were special cases, of course -- students who came late, or discovered their powers in some kind of unorthodox ways, or instances like that -- but for the most part students started in January when they were in ninth grade. She wouldn't have liked to start in a school and then basically have to throw away the past few months and start again for the Academy. An extended summer was always nice, too -- since coming, though, she'd only ever had the one-month breaks that were the norm for the Academy, and the two-month summers were what she missed the most, probably, of regular schooling. "When did you get your powers?" she asked out of curiosity, cocking her head to one side, as she heard that Annabel hadn't gotten hers yet. She probably would soon, Skye was sure; she was at just around the age. Skye had gotten hers at thirteen as well. "Yeah, that's a pretty bizarre thought," she said, laughing too. It struck her as weird that they were sitting there, laughing about how ridiculous it was that they'd be Seniors next year. Definitely a bizarre thought. In another year, there'd really be no more hanging around the Academy daily even if she wanted to, unless she came back and got a job here or something, but she wasn't sure how likely that was to happen straight away. Unlike high school graduation, there was no more higher level to opt into to stay here if she chose... They would just graduate and move on. It was a very weird idea, one that she was neither happy nor particularly upset about, but definitely a very real one. "I can't believe that that's it in a year and a half." She wasn't absolutely sure on Josh's plans post-graduation, but then again, she wasn't even positive about her own plans.

Most people slipped up in conversation sometimes, Joshua included, so he only twitched his lips at her correction and decided not to tease her about it. Sometimes Josh made jokes at the expense of his friends but only if he thought they'd take them as such and if he was in the particular mood to be a troll. The latter circumstance was not in place, Josh feeling amiable and not at all mischievous. He was in a content and placid mood. It owed mostly to the fact that he with a friend, having finished a discussion about his engagement to a woman that he loved, now talking about education and travelling out of the country. It could put anyone in a good mood. "Nor have I been. I'd like to go, though, if only for the heat and the experience." In all honesty he'd sooner go to one of the hottest countries in the world to get a blast of heat, really soak up that summer energy. He wondered if any Fire elementals lived out there and, if they did, how their powers benefited. Someone should do a study on that. Hm. He thought about looking into the research aspect of the medical field sometimes. Joshua loved to discover things, work out the mysteries and puzzles of the world. What better way to put this to work than to find cures through his passion? It was all in the works, though, nothing set in stone. "The heat's great for us," he agreed. "I could spend a day baking under it and not have to worry about sunburn or skin cancer. It's amazing." He loved the heat as much as he loved his fire but, well, that was a given.
Confinement did not do him good when he was in an unfamiliar place. Josh liked to explore, to overturn every rock and look around every corner. He did not do well with the unknown. It was alright on vacation but he did not like feeling lost or helpless in an unfamiliar establishment. It was the same way he'd never liked any place completely devoid of light unless he could use his powers. He'd never feared the darkness—enjoyed it, actually—but he liked the freedom to illuminate the area if he needed to look around. It was a safety blanket. "I will," he promised. From him it could be considered sincere. He planned to bring souvenirs back for all of his friends and take as many pictures as he could. He would not spend the entire time taking photographs of every street and he certainly wouldn't take multiple shots of the same thing, not wanting to be wasteful or pointless with photography. He'd definitely do his best to capture the cities, though, the culture. "Do you know any Spanish or did you need to reply on English speakers?" He'd once have been in that position if not for Nell. French had been his mandatory second language thanks to his place of birth and he'd never taken Spanish in high school when it had also been an option. Language fascinated him but he'd used his electives for other passions, like all the different science and history classes he could slot in there. "Oh, you did? Whereabouts? It sounds like it would be fun." He could look back fondly on his travels with his own parents and so he figured Skye's were probably good experiences too.
His gray eyes twinkled at her question. "Thirteen, in the living room with the fireplace," he said, wording it like an answer in a game of Clue. Chuckling, he paused for a moment while he arranged his thoughts to be a little more serious. "It was nothing dramatic, thank goodness." Fire was such a destructive element that there were a vast number of things that could go wrong with unconfined displays. He could destroy in minutes what it took someone like Nell ages to create. Fire was catching, consuming, deadly. He loved it, though, as most elementals loved their own. "You?" He found it quite fun to talk to Skye and to learn a little more about her. They were not the most open people but he trusted her enough to share a little bit and so he was giving her the option to trust him in return. He always tried to make his questions light and non-evasive but if, like now, someone asked him a personal question he was prone to automatically assumed he could turn it around on them without many repercussions. "It will be strange," he agreed. "Not it for me, though. I've got another four years in medical school and then more in residency, depending on what I go for." He wasn't sure what he would take residency for. He had a lot of time to decide and so he really felt there was no rush. "I'm going to try and stay in the Hollow, though. I've got Nell and I don't want to lose that." Disappearing for four years of her life wouldn't be good.

She smirked a bit in amusement, imagining Josh just standing outside in the California heat, soaking up its warmth and the energy that he surely got from it. She didn't know that feeling -- she just felt like melting when it was hot out, even on a day like today... a day that was nowhere close to California weather, but pretty damn hot, as far as she was concerned. She would probably be hiding inside with air conditioning if she weren't here at the park... not that the shade of this tree wasn't a good enough quick fix for that. "Well, you'd probably like it more than me..." Maybe if she went in the winter or something that would be alright -- it wouldn't be cold there at all really, so it probably wouldn't have that same effect that the summer would have had on Josh, but it would be so comfortable. Sweater weather at coldest, but even then probably not, not for someone like Skye who'd lived up here her entire life. "That does sound nice," she acknowledged. While she didn't seek heat in the same way, she definitely wouldn't mind lying out in the sun as long as things didn't get too crazy hot. It was nice, the warmth that the sun brought, in a way completely unrelated to their respective elements and the effects of the weather. "Do you guys tan well at all?" she asked out of curiosity. It had never really occurred to her before, but it did make sense that Fires didn't have to worry about sunburn and the like... It was a confirmed fact that now opened up opportunities in her mind, anyway, but she supposed that to Fires like Josh himself, that was just life.
Skye nodded her approval, knowing that Josh tended to stick to the promises he made -- not that this was anything close to a promise, really, but it was the principle of the thing. He tended to keep to the things that he said; Josh was quite reliable in that sense. "Thanks," she said, but grinned a bit. "Though you don't actually have to bring me anything... I wasn't kidding about the pictures though." She was straight-faced now, but most friends were able to figure out when she was kidding and when she wasn't, the expression on her face aside. Josh tended to be pretty good at that, actually... probably because he had a tendency to do the exact same thing. "No, no Spanish at all," she said, shaking her head. "Well, my mom knew a bit from the one class she took in high school... and my dad knew how to order a beer." She smirked a bit at the thought, remembering brief instances of their stay in Spain fondly. The three of them, her parents and herself, had been pretty much lost in Spain, if not for the map and the English speakers they found in the area (luckily, there had been a goodly amount due to the fact it was summer and there were tourists crawling all over the place). She spoke French herself -- her father, writing speeches for, at best, the likes of politicians and CEOs, spoke both English and French, and up to the end of eighth grade she'd been a student in the French Immersion program in her area. French was also, now, her chosen Minor in college. French and Spanish were similar, but not quite alike enough that she would have been able to navigate an entire Spanish-speaking country with her French knowledge alone. "Mm... sort of all over, actually," she said, smiling a bit. "My mom, she's a teacher, there's this thing where she can kind of take a school year off, which is kind of cool, so we took the time and went traveling. Kind of like a last long trip before I came here, actually." That had been years ago, now. Madness.
"I think anything dramatic would have been more than any living room could take," she told him in utter seriousness, shaking her head. Fire really was a pretty dangerous thing. It was much harder to control than some of the other elements -- Thunders simply directed a charge wherever they wanted to, and the only danger to that was that the material could be conductive, which would mean the electricity going haywire, but as long as they kept common sense, it wouldn't be too bad. Fire, though, went everywhere, swallowed whole everything in its path, and didn't relent for anything, except maybe an ocean. Maybe. Wind was a bit difficult to control too, though, she supposed, but though all the elements were surely deadly in their own way, fire was definitely in a league all its own. Probably risky that Fires were also the easiest to set off, then. "That's cool, though. We can't all have the dramatic reveal. Mine was even less special, though," she assured him, smiling a bit at the idea. "Uh, starting when I was thirteen I think, whenever I got angry or just annoyed, the static would start to go crazy. Things stuck to things -- like magnets. People's hair sticking up. Things like that." It wasn't overall spectacular, but she was sure it would have been quite suspicious had it ever happened while she was in public. Skye wasn't easily angered, but she had always been pretty irritable. "Strange indeed," she echoed, wondering what she would be doing afterward -- she didn't seem to have as much of a plan as Josh did. "Where are you planning to go for med school if you're staying in the Hollow?" Knowing that she wanted to pursue her element in her college years, Skye hadn't done much research into alternatives nearby -- she did know of a number of universities and the like back in Ottawa, but in the end she'd chosen the Academy for, mostly, sentimental reasons.
