I HEARD THE TRUTH WAS BUILT TO BEND A MECHANISM TO SUSPEND THE GUILT IS WHAT YOU WILL REQUIRE - - - - - - - - - - - - - -& STILL YOU'VE GOT TO DANCE LITTLE LIAR It was remarkable how many leaves had made their way into the tennis court to be buried by the winter snow and even more surprising that his parents had not already cleaned the place out when the spring thaw came. He supposed that neither of them had a real use for the tennis court considering Donovan and Joshua were the only ones who could play. Not that they'd have done it themselves, anyway—they'd have asked the staff, a luxury Joshua had but chose not to utilize. The maids had enough of a task making sure all of the many rooms in the house were clean, it was generally the job of a gardener to do the yard work. Still don't have one of those. He had Nell, of course, but she was his fiancée and not his gardener. He'd given the garden over to her but that did not mean he was expecting her to do the yard work as well. Besides, it gave him something to do with his day off and some time with his sister, who was leaning against the cage and watching him, water bottle in hand. "Does it have to be spotless?" she asked impatiently, tapping her foot. He'd promised to teach her the basics of tennis and how to play and she apparently didn't want to wait any longer for that to happen. "Just about," he said, then added dryly, "Unless you'd want to slip on a leaf and break your neck?"
She rolled her eyes and tossed her blonde hair but offered no other objections. She was more like a teenager than the cute little sister she'd once been but she was still very close to him and their sibling relationship hadn't changed much. He was not her father even if he was taking care of her and he didn't try to act like it unless she started being a real brat. Thankfully that didn't happen too often. Several minutes later he lobbed the second bag of leaves to join the first and picked up his racket from where he'd rested it on the concrete. "Alright," he said, and she grinned in excitement. "You ready?" Annabel gave an eager nod and he first approached her in order to show her how to properly handle the racket. She all but hissed that she could figure it out on her own and he gave an easy smile as he made his way back to his side of the court. "Alright, Belle," he said. "Do your best." Considering she'd never played in her life before, her 'best' was pretty awful. Most of her hits were fouls and if she did manage to serve something he could respond to, Annabel hitting it back became the problem. After a few minutes she grudgingly admitted, "Right, what was it that you wanted to tell me?"
They played for another few hours until Annabel insisted she wanted a break and set the racket down, wiping sweat from her brow. He hadn't gotten quite as intense as she had and so he was considerably more energized than she was. "You're getting better," he encouraged, grinning at her. He wouldn't lie to Belle to save her feelings—he truly believed that she was improving from her form at the start of their game. He was still able to hit back almost everything she served but it was the first day. He certainly hadn't picked up on the game as easily as one, two, three. "I'm going to grab a shower," she said, frowning. "I'm all sticky." He nodded and decided that he would do the same, siblings heading to their respective rooms once they put aside the equipment and went back to the house. Joshua was towelling his hair dry when the doorbell rang and he stopped to tug on a freshly laundered shirt and a pair of jeans before he went downstairs and pulled the door open. He left the front driveway gates open most of the time now so that people could drop by without having to buzz the house first. "Hey, Devin, what's up man?" He stepped back and to the side so that he wasn't blocking access to the house. "Come on in. Was there something you wanted?"

How does it feel What does it mean to you Your heart is real It isn't bulletproof You can't conceal all of the things you do On your way down It had only been a couple of days since the encounter on the street with Calvin. Devin was not the sort of person to hold on to a conversation and let the words nag at his insides like an angry hornet, tugging and twisting and churning every time he thought about it. Gangs, scars, survival. What did all of it mean? Did Joshua witness something that a gang did not wish him to see and try to take him out? That happened a lot in the movies and perhaps it held true in reality. He was a bit oblivious to any possible gang activity that might be lurking in the Hollow, but that did not mean it did not exist. Pretending it was not there did not make it so. He woke up that morning, rubbing at the side of his head. Sleeping in late did have a disadvantage, but at the same time it was oh so sweet. Summer vacation was heaven on earth. Devin stayed up laying playing video games and slept in until the sun was well over the tree tops. Autumn had been staying with him recently, so he did spend some of his evenings watching movies and going out to dinner with her, but his drive to avoid sex with the girl led him to obsess over his video games a little more than normal. Devin was rather proud of himself, actually. However today was different; he was going to go to Josh and approach him about what happened with this...gang that Calvin spoke so lightly of. Wouldn't it have been all hush hush? Why did he make it seem like Josh was part of it? His spine tingled, and quickly the went to the bathroom.
After a quick shower, Devin got dressed into a comfortable pair of khaki cargo shorts and a white t-shirt, his black skater shoes sliding easily onto his feet. Wallet and phone in his pockets Devin made way out of the front door, grabbing his skateboard on the way out. As soon as he hit the sidewalk, Devin set the board down and stepped up, pushing off of the ground and taking off towards his destination: Joshua's house. He knew that he and Nell had been living together at the apartment for quite some time now, but figured he would try the mansion first. Annabel was his little sister and he attempted to spend time with her if at all possible when he was free from school and volunteer work at the hospital. If he wasn't there, then that was fine; Devin would just find his way towards Nell's place and see if he was holed up there for the day. It was a gorgeous summer day so it couldn't hurt to ride around a little bit. The sun was bright and warm, and the people in the Hollow were brimming with energy and life. There were quite a few students lingering in the shops and wandering the sidewalks, but some might have been working and getting in some extra hours during their free time. Devin had a few shifts coming up at the club, and was actually going to be working that night. The pay was sure to be good on summer vacation. Finally he made his way through the Hollow and wound up at the gates of Joshua's house, feeling rather anxious.
"He's your best friend..." Devin breathed to himself, stepping off of the skateboard and kicking it into his hand. That was a much faster way to get to his friend's house, and took a note to go by skateboard next time. Eventually he was standing at the front door and swallowed hard, knocking on the door. His palms were sweaty and it took him a moment to keep his fingers from twitching in anticipation. After what felt like forever the man who opened the door was none other than his best friend, and Devin refrained from shaking. "Hey Josh," He piped up, stepping into the house and looking around. It was amazing; no matter how many times he came into the entrance of their home he managed to stare at the place as though he had never seen it before in his life. Devin was content living in his house but he did aspire to live the high life one day. "Yeah, I actually wanted to talk to you about something." He rolled his shoulders a bit to stay loose and relaxed; this was Josh. Would he really get upset if he asked about this? Devin exhaled. "I ran into someone the other day. Said his name was Calvin, and he was looking for you. He didn't know your name, only that you had a scar on your face." He flinched at the word 'scar'. The blonde fought to keep eye contact with his best friend, but it had to be done. If he stuttered and flopped around now, that might make matters worse. "Is there somewhere we can talk?" He rubbed the back of his head.

I HEARD THE TRUTH WAS BUILT TO BEND A MECHANISM TO SUSPEND THE GUILT IS WHAT YOU WILL REQUIRE - - - - - - - - - - - - - -& STILL YOU'VE GOT TO DANCE LITTLE LIAR Joshua did not suspect that anything was wrong when he opened the door to his best friend and so his demeanour remained light and cheerful as he invited him inside. Nell wasn't home and so he welcomed the company, guessing that his sister would want a break after they'd just spent hours competing with one another in a tennis court. The Fire graduate furrowed his brow as Devin mentioned wanting to talk, noting the way he had exhaled. He was going to invite him to sit down in the living room and get something to drink before they dove into the conversation but it seemed that his buddy wanted to get right to the point. Joshua went from confused to baffled as Joshua mentioned someone called Calvin, a name that Josh had never heard before in his life. Well, he'd known of people called Calvin but he'd never met one personally. He did not make the connection about the gang even when Devin noted that the boy hadn't known his name. The mention of the scar did not bother him too much, merely a flicker of irritation that crawled into the back of his mind. Course that'd be the one thing this guy noted. He could not pretend that it was not a distinguishing feature but he'd preferred to be known as 'that tall guy with dark hair', which is how people used to identify him. His gray eyes were also a notable feature, though less used if someone had only seen him at a distance. That's what it sounded like the case was with this guy. Why would Devin care about this? he wondered.
Then again, Dev did say the guy was looking for me. This did not alarm him. He figured that it was perhaps a colleague or someone who knew him by reputation. Perhaps it was someone from up at the school that wanted to introduce himself. Joshua was not sure but he didn't feel like it was anything to be worried about. Devin seemed concerned, however, and Josh trusted the Earth elemental enough that he decided to listen carefully to whatever it was that his friend wanted to tell him. "The name doesn't ring a bell," he admitted, frowning. Someone else may have assumed that the name had slipped their mind after a few years had gone by, but not Josh. He had a very good memory both for academics and for people. I never forget the people I'm acquainted with. He even remembered the ones he'd rather forget. "Was he a student?" He didn't specify a student of which school but he figured his friend would catch on to the fact that he meant that Academy without Josh having to elaborate. His sister interrupted their conversation at that moment by coming downstairs, pausing halfway down the left-hand curving staircase and casting Devin a smile. "Hey Dev," she greeted him, lifting her hand and wiggling her fingers in a wave. "I was wondering who'd dropped by." Joshua smiled at her but said firmly, "Would you mind if Devin and I spoke alone, Annabel?"
His sister looked a little confused but not offended. She often shooed her brother to hang out with Kelly and so they had a mutual understanding about the privacy required with best friends. "Alright. See ya around, Devin." She turned and went back upstairs without much complaint. Joshua just hoped that she didn't decide to listen in. He didn't know what Devin had to say to him but he didn't want his sister to hear in case it was something more serious than he'd originally assumed. "I was going to suggest the living room," he said, "but maybe the room is best. It's got doors. A lock." He glanced upstairs in the direction Annabel had gone, figuring that it was explanation enough. He paused before he mounted the stairs and glanced toward the kitchen. "Want a drink or anything first?" After they'd sorted out everything else, Josh led the way up the stairs and down the hall to his room, closing and locking the door behind them and going over to the couches that were situated by the window. If he turned his closet into a kitchen, Josh was quite sure he could live in this room alone. It had a bathroom, a balcony, seating, a bed... everything but the kitchen sink. "Alright. What's on your mind?" The concerns of his friend concerned him, too, especially when they had something to do with him.

How does it feel What does it mean to you Your heart is real It isn't bulletproof You can't conceal all of the things you do On your way down
Relief washed over Devin, although it was temporary. Something still bothered him about Calvin, but was not quite sure what it was. Perhaps it was his boldness to approach him on the street? Or perhaps that he knew who Josh was but knew nothing of his name or his whereabouts? Or even the fact that he knew Devin was friends with Josh, or at least spent time with him? That was highly unnerving to the blonde and felt on edge just thinking about the fact that someone was watching them. "Oh." Was all he managed to say, not wanting to display the temporary relief he felt. "Yeah, said he was a student at the school. A fire student too." Of course that was not really a big deal, but Devin figured he would offer up what information he could to see if Joshua might remember who this man was and what he might have wanted. It was not necessarily Devin's business, but the gang aspect of the discussion set him on edge. After a moment a voice caught his attention and he turned to look at Annabel with a soft smile. "Hey Annabel." It made him miss his own little sister and wondered how she was faring. It had been at least a week or two since they last talked. His sister did not seem to mind that Josh wanted to talk to Devin without her listening in, and went back upstairs. "See you," He called out, nodding to her retreating form.
The living room would not have been the best place, but figured that would have been first choice for Josh. Now that Devin knew Annabel was in the house it seemed less private and it seemed his best friend picked up on that as well. "Sounds good to me," Devin replied, about ready to follow Josh up the stairs before he turned around to offer him something from the kitchen. Any other day the boy might have found himself wanting a drink but he really needed to get this off of his chest first before they could move on to less tense activities. That was, assuming Joshua did not get extremely angry and throw Devin out of the house. He did not know if that would really happen but he tried to keep things realistic. Who knew what would upset his friend? "Nah, I'm good man." It was strange, not having much to say. He felt almost like a mute. That would not last forever though, once he was able to talk to Josh about what was bothering him. Eventually they found their way into the bedroom; Devin heard the click of the door lock and watched as Josh made himself comfortable on the couches. He wanted so badly to sit down and make this an easy conversation, but he was not really sure what was 'easy' about it.
"Well," The blonde started, glancing out of the window. "I know you don't like people prying into your life...and you know that I really avoid doing that to you." There, that was out of the way. He wanted Josh to know that this was not something he had been planning on doing for a long time or thought it would be fun to watch Joshua struggle with talking about something possibly very private. This was a sincere concern and wanted to make sure everything was okay now. "But...when Calvin came to me he made mention of something that made me fearful of your safety." Devin swallowed, fussing with his hair again out of nerves. He did not want his best friend to blow up in his face or shut down. "He mentioned something about a gang. Said that your scar was all you got out of it and you were lucky to be alive. I was just more or less wondering if this guy was just bullshitting me or if I should be concerned that he might be potentially dangerous?" That actually did not come out as bad as he thought it would, so Devin dropped his shoulders a little and flopped on to the couch, glancing over at the dark haired fire elemental with an anxious gleam in his blue eyes.

I HEARD THE TRUTH WAS BUILT TO BEND A MECHANISM TO SUSPEND THE GUILT IS WHAT YOU WILL REQUIRE - - - - - - - - - - - - - -& STILL YOU'VE GOT TO DANCE LITTLE LIAR Joshua did not reply when Devin confirmed that the boy was a student at the Academy they both attended, merely nodded and looked as if he were deep in thought. His expression revealed nothing of the thoughts that whirled around in his mind and tried to fit together like puzzle pieces. They might as well have been bits from different boxes for how well he could put ideas together. Still doesn't ring a bell. He didn't share any of his inner musings with Devin as he gestured up the stairs and led the way. He still wasn't too concerned—the fact that the boy was a Fire elemental soothed rather than alarmed him. It made sense then that the guy could know who he was with Josh being none the wiser of the other's existence. He didn't hang around the Fires lately and he didn't plan to start. Wonder what he wanted, though? Of this he was entirely ignorant and he wondered if Devin would know anything. It didn't seem like it. It seemed as if what his best friend wanted to talk about was a little more serious and so Joshua was absent of his usual wit as he locked the door to the room and double-checked the lock on the balcony, also ensuring that Annabel wasn't lurking out there and spying on them. He was fairly confident that his sister couldn't read lips, he just didn't want her presence distracting him from the conversation. Besides, if this was something he'd have a strong reaction to he wanted to protect her from that.
As it turned out, his reaction was the opposite of strong. Instead of flying into a rage, Joshua was deathly quiet and still the moment the word 'gang' passed the lips of his best friend. His thoughts went blank and his chest got tight, his expression staying as flat and placid as a stone. He kept his gray gaze trained on his friend as Devin went on, a hard glint in his eyes that suggested the information was rather unwelcome. Other than that, it was impossible to tell how he would react. Lucky to be alive, he repeated to himself. He got that much right, whoever he is. The name Calvin still didn't ring a bell and Joshua was quite sure he'd known the names of all the gang members he'd hung around. He'd protected his own because he didn't want them to know that he was just some spoiled rich kid desperate for friends. A lot of them had lived in shitty apartments or otherwise poor living conditions and he'd spent his nights in a huge bed in a comfortable mansion. Looking away from Devin and down at his hand, Josh traced the ugly scar that had nearly cost him its use. It had healed badly thanks to it being in such an inconvenient place and Joshua being left-handed as he was, he'd reopened it a few times before it had finally given up and closed over. "I never intended you to find out," was all he said at first, still eyeing the scar. He knew every detail of the mark just as he knew the one on his face. He'd gotten them in the same incident, after all.
After a long pause, Joshua lifted his gaze back up to Devin's. "I'm not going to deny it." How could he deny something like this, after all? The scar was there on his face, permanent proof of the mistakes he'd made in his past. Josh went silent again, debating how much or how little he was going to say. He did not want Devin to think badly of him—not for being in a gang nor for lying to his own best friend for years. Five years, that was how long it had been. Five years he had kept this hidden and it had been unearthed by someone that, as far as Joshua knew, was a complete stranger. Unless... Josh frowned as something occurred to him. "This... Calvin... did you tell him anything about me? How he could get in touch?" He did not want to jump to conclusions yet and so he did not tell his friend anything about where the inquiry was going. His aim was not to pin the blame on Devin for this guy contacting him but to try and figure out how he'd known. I never told anyone but Nell. No one. Nell knew because he loved her, trusted her, and he didn't even consider that she had passed the information on to anyone else. This Calvin must have figured it out some other way... or perhaps he'd known it all along.

How does it feel What does it mean to you Your heart is real It isn't bulletproof You can't conceal all of the things you do On your way down
Devin sighed. Never expected him to find out? Devin tilted his head slightly to look at his best friend, wondering what it was that he meant by that. Part of the blonde wanted to take offense to the statement; Joshua knew a lot of the darker corners of his life--hell, probably some Devin wished he did not know of--and yet here he was finding out about something that was possibly ten times bigger than some of the troubles he dealt with at home. It made him feel like he was not a trustworthy friend, but at the same time understood all too well how Joshua worked. He was sure that the intent was not to insult Devin or make him feel like a bad friend. Maybe this portion of his past was something that was a bit heavier than the rest. The scar on Josh's face and hand was evidence enough of that. Any possible feeling of frustration was quickly diminished as Devin watched Josh fiddle with his hands. "I kinda figured," The boy half whispered, glancing at his lap for a moment while the silence lingered. He wanted Josh to initiate the conversation because this was his past and his memories. How fair would it be of Devin to just shoot off a bunch of questions and push his best friend into a corner over something he was not even supposed to know about? His blue eyes were soft and understanding as he placed a hand on Josh's shoulder.
"Even if you did it's not my place to force the truth. I'm your friend. That's not going to change either way. Okay?" Devin offered him a reassuring smile, just as understanding and warm as his gaze. The initial shock of the news was wearing off, as was the anxiety of having his friend punch him in the face for inquiring. Now only two nagging feelings remained: curiosity and a tad of fear. If Calvin knew who Josh was based on the scars, and mentioned the gang...was he a part of this gang too? What could he want with Joshua now, after all of this time? So many questions rattled around in the blonde's head, but no clear cut answer could be made by himself. He needed Josh to fill in the blanks. However, that was not something he was going to push on the Fire so instead hoped that maybe he would talk about it a little bit. If anything offer enough just to east Devin's mind. He was not looking for a full back story or anything in major detail. All he wanted to know was that his friend was safe. He shook his head at Josh's inquiry, proud of himself for staying discreet. "No, just said that you were my best friend. I never even mentioned your name. I figured if he didn't know it well...he didn't need to." The boy purposely skirted about Joshua's name with Calvin just in case it was something familiar or possibly easy to find. The name was very common but with the scars it would not be so hard to put pieces together.
He scratched his head a little bit and shook it again. "And the only form of contact I gave him was your e-mail. No phone number or home address or last name. I dunno when he plans to contact you but..." Devin shrugged his shoulders lamely, glancing over at Joshua. "At least you have the option of ignoring it and there's no way he can find out much about you." He thought about it for a moment or two, wondering if perhaps Josh was actually interested in meeting up with this guy. Curiosity would eventually get the better of him and he might wind up trying to communicate. Right? Perhaps not. Joshua was not like Devin in that way, at least so far as he knew. Swallowing a little bit, his eyes darted around the room before settling on the window again. He would definitely need to go out and skateboard for a while after this. Either that or go drown in some video games for a few hours. That might work too. "So do you think anything bad will come of this? Like...should I be worried about this guy?" He asked feebly, twiddling with his fingers. Devin was not a fighter by any means. If someone wanted a fight, there would not be much of one. He would much rather toss in the towel before anything even started. He just hoped that no towels would need to be tossed any time soon, whether it be for him or for Josh.

I HEARD THE TRUTH WAS BUILT TO BEND A MECHANISM TO SUSPEND THE GUILT IS WHAT YOU WILL REQUIRE - - - - - - - - - - - - - -& STILL YOU'VE GOT TO DANCE LITTLE LIAR Though he would regret if Devin was upset about his deception over the years, Josh knew he wouldn't take it back if given the chance. He was a secretive person and it made him uncomfortable to talk about himself and his experiences. Sometimes he wondered if he'd even have told Nell about the gang had she not been the one to save his ass when they'd jumped him the second time. Perhaps he would have, since she'd confessed to him about killing her own mother and he'd stuck with her through that. He supposed he would never know, for things had not worked out that way. He trusted Nell with everything and anything. He trusted Devin, too, but it was a different kind of trust. He didn't want his friend to know about the demons in his past because they did not reflect positively upon him. His gray eyes were searching as he locked them to Devin's blue ones, listening as his friend promised not to break off contact. Not smiling, not appearing at all convinced, he asked steadily, "Not even if I told you I'm not as innocent as you might think?" It seemed that the only thing Devin knew about was that the gang had given him the scars. Joshua might have been comfortable with keeping it that way but there was a chance that the truth could come out some other time and he'd be blamed for keeping it a secret and portraying himself as the innocent victim. He was a victim, yes, but not an entirely innocent one.
"There's blood on your hands, too, kid." Wasn't that what they'd told him once when they'd ganged up on some poor bastard and Josh had nearly chickened out. "This affects all of us." They had acted as a group but they had also forced everyone to take part so that no one individual could go down without the rest going with them. It was not out of respect for one another as they'd told him—though he'd believed it at the time—but to stop him from doing what he'd eventually done anyway. Telling the police. They'd frightened him into thinking that any mention of their illegal activities, whether he'd taken part or not, would mean his own imprisonment. He hadn't understood at the time that a minor couldn't be sent to jail unless it was a very, very serious crime. He'd been young and gullible. Did Devin recall the period of distance when Joshua had tried to keep his real friends, his true friends, apart from him? His friend confirmed his suspicions when he mentioned having given the boy his email. "Already has," Josh said, shaking his head when Devin wondered at when the boy would try and get in touch. No, he hadn't ignored it, either. He'd replied. "I do know him, then, though not by that name. Calvin must be his first name." Emery was what Calvin had always been called by the members of the gang. Or sometimes 'little bro' when they were trolling or being affectionate. He was younger than even Josh had been, though not a part of the actual gang.
He exhaled slowly, wondering what to make of the entire situation. This was not how he'd envisioned Devin finding out because he'd never wanted him to find out to begin with. "And you're right," he added. "He doesn't know my name." There's a reason for that. In all of his stupid decisions, Joshua was incredibly glad for the one intelligent one that he'd made. Of course, it hadn't been out of concern for his safety at the time, he'd only feared rejection. Whatever the reason it had protected him for years. They'll know it now, he reminded himself, recalling how they'd hurt Nell to get back at him and found his number on her phone. He didn't blame Nell for that. Besides, the guys were in jail now. Most of them. He didn't know if he should count Emery as one of the guys. He wasn't a gang member, it was his brother who was one. He blinked at Devin when his friend asked him if he should be worried, considering him. "I don't think so," he said. He wasn't worried about Emery himself and so he wasn't going to make Devin go into a panic. "He wasn't one of the ones who fucked me up." Fucked him up was right. He suppressed a shudder as he remembered the incident, glad that Devin hadn't been there but wishing his fiancée hadn't needed to see it. Clearing his throat a little uncomfortably he added, "And it's where... all the scars came from. There was no car accident." He figured that he needed to get that off his chest.

How does it feel What does it mean to you Your heart is real It isn't bulletproof You can't conceal all of the things you do On your way down
Innocence was such a generic word. It could describe ones lack of knowledge of a particular subject, or possibly basic obliviousness to the world around you, and of course it could be sexual or perhaps deal with something that made you open your eyes to truly see the world for what it was. Devin knew that Joshua was not innocent in many ways, and so the question somewhat threw him for a bit of a loop. Even so the blonde shrugged and squeezed his friend’s shoulder before removing it, hand now resting in his lap. “Nothing will change my friendship with you, or the way I look at you now. That’s not how friendships work.” Devin frowned a little and sighed, feeling bad for Josh. This was something he wanted to keep to himself, and now it was creeping into the open. Although it was only towards Devin, the open feeling was probably quite large considering the way Josh kept his life so private. Even through all of the shit that the Earth student went through over the years—including the more recent encounters with his step mother Lauren—Josh was always there and protecting him. It was time Devin reciprocated the support and protection by letting his friend know he was not about to walk away now. “The past is the past, Josh. That’s why it is where it is.” If people based a person on their past then they did not deserve to have friends. People change. Second chances should be awarded to everyone. Well, that’s how Devin looked at it anyway.
“He has?” Devin asked, lifting an eyebrow. Well…shit. He instantly regretted giving Calvin any sort of information by this point, because obviously Josh should not have to relive any portion of his past. No one should, at least the bad parts anyway. He shook his head and sighed heavily. There was no surprise that they knew one another but still Devin was on edge. He knew nothing about this guy; hell, even Josh knew practically nothing either. Neither male knew the other’s name. How strange was that? It might have kept them safe back then, but having one come back to contact the other and basing their knowledge off of their physical marring was strange at best. “Well, I guess it’s for the best that you stay anonymous then? I mean, based on how you knew one another and all…” Devin floundered around with his words, wondering what to say. It was difficult thinking of anything that did not sound remotely like prying or cornering Josh to talk about what happened. He did not want to do that to his best friend. That was unfair. He did notice that a long stream of air passed through his nostrils as Joshua confirmed that there seemed to be no immediate threat; what would have happened if he had been a threat? How would they deal with it then, being as Calvin was a student at the Academy? You could not just skip around and act like you don’t notice someone, and Josh was kind of hard to miss.
Usually where there was one lie, another was bound to follow. It was not that Josh lied, necessarily, but seriously omitted certain truths about his past. Skirted around Devin with the facts. And for the Earth that was fine, because he understood Josh very well. It did bother the boy that his best friend kept all of this hidden away from him, and even covered it up with something like a car accident. It hurt. He wasn’t doing it to be mean…doesn’t mean he doesn’t trust me… Devin had to reassure himself that this had nothing to do with a lack of trust. It was the only thing that could make him feel better. It reminded him of when Lauren hit Devin again not too long after Joshua placed her to the wall and threatened her within an inch of her life. He never told Josh it happened again; it was not that he mistrusted his friend, but more that he did not want to burden him with a problem he should handle on his own. Maybe that’s what Josh did. “Oh,” Was all Devin managed to say at first, fiddling with his fingers anxiously now. What else was there to say? He felt out of place and helpless as he sat there, trying to think of a way to drop the subject, but nothing came. He sighed a little. “Just…know that no matter what I’m here for you. You don’t have to talk about any of it, but if you want to then I’ve got pretty decent listening ears.” Devin smiled faintly at his best friend before looking at his lap again.

I HEARD THE TRUTH WAS BUILT TO BEND A MECHANISM TO SUSPEND THE GUILT IS WHAT YOU WILL REQUIRE - - - - - - - - - - - - - -& STILL YOU'VE GOT TO DANCE LITTLE LIAR He was not as reassured as he could have been by Devin's words. Perhaps it was due to the fact he'd seen friends and coworkers turn on Nell when they'd found out about the trial but he did believe that friendship could be marred and damaged by certain things. He had not murdered anyway, let alone his own mother, but that didn't change the fact that he'd ran around with a gang. He hadn't stood idly by and watched the other guys get into things, he'd been right there with them. Stealing things, threatening people, carrying out threats. He'd felt tough back then with a switchblade in his hand and a group of guys he thought were friends backing him. He realised now that they'd have left him in a flash if there'd been any real trouble. They gave an outer impression of unity but on the inside it had turned out to be every man for himself. Nothing his friend was saying comforted him. How could someone as selfless and sweet as Devin claim to be fine with the fact that Josh had committed crimes against strangers for no other reason than to fit it? Then again, he'd not told Devin that he was in the gang, nor that he'd done it for friendship. He didn't plan on telling him why he'd done it, either. No one knew enough about his own incentives to rat him out and it was going to remain a secret. Because in admitting that he'd gone to the gang to make friends, it was undermining the value of the friendships he already had. He regretted that now but he couldn't take it back and so he'd prefer that it stay well-buried. It was lying again, or at least covering up the truth, but it was a lie he was willing to live with.
If Devin had hoped to protect him by warning him not to give out his identity it was a little too late for that now. Josh appreciated the concern of his friend but he was not nearly as threatened by Calvin as he felt by his own best friend now. He didn't like his secrets being pushed out into the open like this, it made him feel exposed and uncomfortable. "I told him my name. He was a decent kid." He didn't go into detail about why he trusted Emery above the others. He knew that the younger boy had struggled to understand why his older brother seemed to care more about running around with the gang than looking after him because the younger boy in all his naivety had trusted him. There hadn't been names given out but there had been trust. They'd connected because Joshua, at the age of ten, had felt intimidated when talking to guys that had at the time been around the age that he and Devin were now. Emery'd been even younger than that. "It happened years ago, Dev. Most of it's buried now." There he went again, admitting that he'd kept this secret for a lot longer than he had originally let on. Ten years. Ten years since he'd joined the gang and five since they'd made their first attempt on his life. Only a year and a half since they'd made the second. He'd kept it so well-hidden that he'd thought he could take it to the grave and his friends wouldn't know any better. He'd been wrong. "Believe me, Emery—Calvin—isn't a threat." He had not yet arranged to meet with the younger elemental, deciding that school might be the best place for that.
Joshua shook his head, wondering if what he was about to say was going to hurt Devin at all. It wasn't personal but it could certainly be taken that way considering how close they were as friends. "I don't," he said truthfully. "And I never will." He didn't want to talk. These were his darker memories, the things that should have stayed where they were and never resurfaced. He didn't blame Devin for bringing it up but it didn't mean that he wanted to sit down and have a heart-to-heart about it. "It's nothing personal—no one else knows." He paused, then admitted, "Nell does, but it's for a good reason. Please don't ask her." He did not usually say the word 'please' and hoped Devin would understand the significance. He didn't want to drag his fiancée into this more than he already had. "I didn't mean to pull her in and she doesn't need to be bothered with it any more." There was still an immense feeling of guilt owing to the fact that they'd targeted her because of him. He didn't think they'd target Devin, too, because they were all in jail. He hoped they'd leave Devin alone. He really did. "I'm never going to want to talk about it. That's the truth." He wasn't going to lie and pretend it was a comfortable subject, that he'd be absolutely fine with discussing it.

How does it feel What does it mean to you Your heart is real It isn't bulletproof You can't conceal all of the things you do On your way down
Devin wanted to feel relieved, to feel safe, but he didn't. Just as Joshua did not feel comforted by Devin's support, he did not feel comforted by Joshua's attempt at reassurance. Even if his best friend did not deem Calvin a threat, it was rather hard to believe. How could he, when there was some sort of gang involved? Devin honestly could care less what Joshua did in the past, but when the past came into the present it became unnerving. Calvin was an unknown, a small puzzle piece found under a couch without the other nine hundred and ninety-nine pieces to be found. Devin was not going to search for the rest though, being as it was not his puzzle to put together. He'd rather toss this particular piece in the trash and try to forget about it all instead. That did not mean that there was a nagging feeling in the back of his mind that made him wary of Calvin, but as Joshua said it had happened years ago. He did not need to know how far back or any exact dates. That was enough for him to leave well enough alone. "And that's perfectly fine," The blonde replied. "I don't expect you to. It's not my place to expect something like that." Had he been anyone else he might have tried to nose his way in, but this was his best friend. He knew him well enough to know where they boundaries lay, and Devin refused to cross them.
He had to admit that it was amusing for Joshua to think he would take something like this personally. This was Devin. Since when did he take stuff like that to heart and fall apart over it? Rarely, if ever. He had his moments of insecurity, but with situations like this there was no room to be offended. This was Joshua's skeletons, not his. "No offense taken, man," Devin said softly, smiling still. His lips tugged downwards for a half second at the mention of Nell, and instantly shook his head, sighing. "You know I would never do that. This is your past, not mine. It's not mine to figure out. Okay?" It was strange that Josh would assume Devin would go behind his back and try to weasel information out of Nell, when that would be the last thing he would ever do. Devin was loyal to a fault, and with his loyalty came the unwavering trust. Although Calvin made him incredibly nervous, it was not Joshua's fault. He trusted his best friend, and that was that. Devin smiled again, nodding before glancing out of the window again. How he wished this visit did not start off that way. Why couldn't it have been something more cheerful? Like a game of pool or chatting about school? Anything was better than making Josh feel this way.
Clearing his throat, the blonde clapped his hands on his knees and stood up, glancing down at the fire elemental. "What say you to doing something entertaining? I'm not sure what, but...I'm up for anything. Interested in a round of chess? I've been practicing." He flexed his muscles and chuckled a little bit with a smirk, glancing at his semi-decent bicep. "I think I can move those pieces around the board like a boss, even if I do lose miserably." He grinned. Devin lowered his arm and shoved his hands in his pockets, waiting to see what it was Josh was interested in doing. If he would rather him leave, that was find too. The entirety of that discussion was a bit heavy, and maybe his friend needed some time to himself. Either way was fine by Devin. He just wanted to leave all of this behind and never discuss it again unless Josh brought it up first. It was all in the past, and that was exactly where Devin wanted to leave it. Nothing changed how he looked at his friend. Not now, not ever.

I HEARD THE TRUTH WAS BUILT TO BEND A MECHANISM TO SUSPEND THE GUILT IS WHAT YOU WILL REQUIRE - - - - - - - - - - - - - -& STILL YOU'VE GOT TO DANCE LITTLE LIAR He released a pent-up breath and dragged a hand through his dark hair when Devin frowned, getting the feeling that he might offend his best friend by warning him away from Nell. "I know," he said. "I had to say it anyway." He hoped that his friend would understand that it was something he'd have said to anyone that found out about what had went on in his past that only Nell was privy to. Nell and the people who'd put him in such an awful place to begin with. He trusted Devin not to go nosing around behind his back but he'd felt better saying it rather than keeping the thought to himself. Going silent for a moment, he tugged at his sleeve and then tapped his fingers against his leg while hundreds of thoughts both connected and separated rushed through his mind. So many things that Devin didn't know. Now the Earth elemental was aware that he was being kept in the dark about something and Josh was not sure his friend would trust him again in the future. Flicking his gray gaze back to meet Devin's blue one, he said very steadily, "Listen, Devin. If there's anything you ever doubt about me, anything you want to know... you can ask. I might not be able to give you the answer, but I'm giving you permission to bring it up. Alright?" If Devin were ever to bring up the scars, to ask why the gang had jumped him, well, maybe Josh might be persuaded to say something. Maybe not. At least this way he was giving some sort of pathway. He didn't want Devin to feel like he would never be allowed to question him about anything.
He had not been expecting the abrupt movement from his friend and so looked mildly surprised when Devin got to his feet, though he stood himself more slowly. He normally would have jumped at the chance for a game of chess, confident that it was something he could win at, but he shook his head when Devin brought it up. "I don't think I could concentrate if I tried." The twitch of his lips was almost apologetic. He needed his concentration for a game as intricate and complicated as chess and he was definitely not feeling it right now. How was he supposed to think four moves ahead when his mind was occupied with thoughts of the gang and everything he'd not told his best friend over the years. If you knew the things I'd done, Devin, would you still trust me as you do? All his best friend knew was the basics. The very barest of the basics at that. He didn't know whether it would stay that way but that was how it was for now. "You don't have to leave, though," he said, not wanting Devin to feel like this was his being dismissed from the property. The visit had upset Josh but it was not his friend he was upset with. It was his past, his history, all things buried coming back to the surface. But he'd bury them once again and he'd get over it. Joshua was resilient, he recovered from things by putting them behind him. Ignoring problems didn't go away but that was his way of dealing with them. "We can find something else to do."
Josh knew that he was in the mood for something fun, something active that could take his mind off of things. It was too alive right now with things he didn't want to be considering. Realising that he hadn't said anything about the house, the Fire graduate managed a genuine smile. "Oh, guess what? I'm totally a home owner now." He normally would have grinned at his friend but the smile was enough to portray that it was a good thing. "My parents gave me this place so we can really do what we want in it, now. A lot of the rooms are still empty but at least they let me keep the pool table." He wasn't in the mood to play pool, either, but he loved that table and he would have been sad to see it go. He liked it better than Donovan, who'd bought it for himself, so his father had shrugged and said, "Keep it," when they were deciding which things to move. "Nell's not home right now and Annabel won't care." Heck, Nell probably wouldn't have cared, either. Might have joined them in their antics. "Backyard, perhaps? It's a nice enough day." He'd played enough tennis with his sister to last him but they could get up to other things. There was a forest and a lake. They owned the lake and a small part of the forest, the rest of which was unclaimed and so, in Joshua's opinion, free for exploration anyway. Not that he didn't already know it inside and out. They were the woods of his childhood, literally his natural backyard.

How does it feel What does it mean to you Your heart is real It isn't bulletproof You can't conceal all of the things you do On your way down
Although Devin nodded to Joshua’s request, he knew for a fact that he was not going to ask his best friend about anything concerning his past. What would be the point in asking a question that would have no answer? If he wanted to do that then he could just mull it around in his head and consider the possible responses on his own without placing Josh on the spot. It was not Devin’s place to sit there and expect something when he had a gut feeling he would not get anything. It would only lead to disappointment and another awkward conversation. He did not like this awkwardness, and would much rather avoid it if at all possible. Besides, being such a pacifist he would hate to upset Josh and have another problem like they did last year. It was a comment that he had meant in jest, but it upset the fire elemental and he was not really willing to re-experience that. “I can understand,” Devin agreed, not really sure what else to say. He felt like he should leave and let Joshua get back to whatever it was he was doing, but at the same time really craved some hang out time with his best friend. Sure they did not have a whole bunch in common when it came to hobbies, but he enjoyed Josh’s presence none the less. Devin’s smile became more natural when he was not asked to leave, and so did not make way to the door as originally planned.
“Okay, well, whatever you want man. I’m following you.” As Devin always did. He was never much of a leader, and he was extremely indecisive. He dealt better with having someone else give direction because it saved him the trouble of dealing with it himself. Joshua was someone that was easy to follow; Devin hardly questioned much of what his best friend said and trusted him with his life, so that made things a little simpler. They were both standing, and the boy took a moment to realize how much shorter he truly was compared to Josh. It was rather amusing really. Like a giant Rottweiler and his best friend the Chihuahua. It brought a smile to Devin’s face at the thought, and did not mind being considered a yappy annoying furry creature too much. After all, he could get that way if he wanted to. “Really? Congratulations! This beast of a house is finally yours.” The blonde looked around the room as though seeing it in an entirely new light. The furniture was the same, the house smell was the same, the resident was the same, but the entire property was now in the hands of Josh instead of his parents. It was really a neat thing, and it took them away from the previous conversation. “Holy hell you got to keep the pool table? Sweet. I’m gonna have to work on my game so I can come over here and kick your ass.” He was not the strongest of people nor did he like fight, but a competitive game of pool could not hurt in the least.
At the suggestion of the back yard, Devin nodded and walked to the door, opening it. “If Annabel wants to join us, that’s cool. What did you have in mind?” He knew that doing any sports was out of the question; Josh was not a big fan of many sports and Devin knew that. Tennis was probably the only exception. Swimming was also out, because he could not really remember a time when they went swimming together. Devi knew Josh was not a fan of water, but did not know that it was more of a fear than a general dislike. He never questioned it though. When they found themselves outside, Devin stretched out and managed a grunt or two as he loosened up. “So…we should climb trees or something. What I would give for a good game of paintball. Is that something you would be interested in at some point?” Devin had only recently found the urge to go and play a few rounds of paintball, but never discussed with Josh whether or not he would enjoy something like that. It did not require any heavy teamwork; essentially the game was every man for himself. If Josh did not join him he would still be sure to make an attempt to try it out at some point, but it did not hurt to ask.

I HEARD THE TRUTH WAS BUILT TO BEND A MECHANISM TO SUSPEND THE GUILT IS WHAT YOU WILL REQUIRE - - - - - - - - - - - - - -& STILL YOU'VE GOT TO DANCE LITTLE LIAR In contrast to his best friend, Joshua was not usually the follower type. He didn't like to be ordered around and he dealt better with things when he could handle them on his own or when it was he who was giving the directions. Instructions gave him a sense of order that he coped well with. Orders made him feel as if he was being forced against his will. His place of employment didn't count, for he was well aware going into the workplace that he'd be at the bottom of the food-chain. He fared a little better in the hospital, where he was considered a senior volunteer thanks to his experience and connection to the hospital's owner. This was not work and so he would have bristled if told what to do. The gang had used him as a pawn enough to last Josh a lifetime. "Furnishing it has been a pain in the ass. You probably never got to see all the new stuff, right?" They'd went from the foyer straight up to his room, both of which looked more or less the same. The foyer was absent of the tables that had once contained a collection of priceless statues, vases and ornaments but for the most part it had stayed the same. The couch was still there. He was thinking about getting a new one purely so that it would feel like his own. "I'll always own you at chess, though," he said with a smirk. "Remember that." He was fairly good at pool but he didn't doubt that anyone who practised enough would be able to beat him. Chess? That was one of the few things he was truly great at.
Josh laughed at mention of his sister. "Nah, I wore her out in tennis earlier," he explained. "I didn't have a plan, to be honest. Wasn't expecting the company." His tone suggested that Devin's presence was welcome despite being unexpected. He wished it could have been under drastically better circumstances but refrained from voicing this thought. It was water under the bridge for the time being. If talk of the gang came up again in the future or Devin found himself wanting to know more, he'd deal with it when it came to that. For now he was content to pretend his best friend had dropped by with the sole intention of spending some quality time as buddies. He was surprised when Devin brought up paintball, though it didn't show in his face. "Hell, I love paintball," he replied. He wondered if Devin would have expected him to have played before. Many people assumed that Josh was not open to things that didn't involve logic or reasoning but in fact he could be persuaded to have some fun once and a while. "Maybe if we could get a big group together, divide into teams. It's more fun that way." Then there were elements of cooperation and of warfare. He was a pretty good shot. Paintball guns didn't frighten him like real guns did. They weren't meant to kill. "There's a place downtown that actually has a sort of arena for it. Laser tag, too, but paintball is much better." It actually hurt when you got shot.
He was in a much easier mood now that they were outside, breathing deep and taking in the scent of the summer air as it filled his lungs. Sunlight sparkled and danced off the surface of the lake, the small yacht that usually bobbed on the surface absent and creating a strange loneliness to the landscape. The boathouse was abandoned and the guest house similarly so, the latter not having been inhabited for quite some time. It was usually reserved for relatives when they came to visit from other countries or provinces, like his grandparents from Nova Scotia. He wondered what he'd do with it now. If they came to visit, would they stay with his parents or still take up temporary residence here? He'd gone silent for a moment as the thoughts distracted him but he snapped out of it when he remembered that Devin was still there. "Oh, sorry," he said, shaking his head. Only a few seconds had passed but he still didn't like feeling that he was ignoring anyone. "Got a bit distracted. What brought paintball into your head, anyway?" He was honestly curious. "Have you ever tried it before?" It was another one of the things he'd done first with the gang. It still unsettled him at times when he realised not all his memories with the guys were bad ones. A lot of fun times had been had as well. He'd went a few times with his real friends but he wouldn't mind a repeat experience, especially since Devin was his best buddy.

How does it feel What does it mean to you Your heart is real It isn't bulletproof You can't conceal all of the things you do On your way down
Devin shook his head a little bit. "Nope, haven't seen the new stuff yet. But we have most of the day. I guess you can show me later on, yeah?" He lifted a brow and watched his friend, now feeling as though things were finding a sense of normalcy again. The original intent for coming to see Joshua had been less than desirable, but like best friends did they pushed through all of the shit so they could get back to the positive things life had to offer. Devin lived realistically and knew that pushing things away in hopes to ignore their existence would not do anyone any good, but who was he to tell Josh that? He cherished their friendship and was in no mood to lose that over his own methods for living. The blonde smirked and chuckled, nodding. "Duly noted, man. So if I ever have this insane urge to just...get beaten down in a game of chess I know who to go to." He knew that Josh was good at the game and there was no denying that. Fortunately Devin was not a lost cause and had other strong points that his best friend did not, so he did not feel all that bad about losing. Maybe if it were a random opponent that he held no ties to, but that was not the case here. He was content losing to Josh, so long as the fire elemental did not start making fun of him or acting like an ass. Josh probably wouldn't, so Devin was not all too worried.
At hearing Annabel would not be joining them, Devin could not help but smile a little bit. He admired the girl but honestly he wanted to spend one on one time with his best friend. Devin understood the bond Josh had with his little sister though, so wanted to ensure he included all who were present in the house. At least his sister was sweet. Annabel reminded him a lot of Athena. Oh, how he missed Judith and his sister. What he would give for them to move back to Maple Hollow. "Sometimes plans are boring," Devin stated, flipping his hand loosely. "Spontaneity is the spice of life. Though I do apologize for the sudden turn up." It was a last minute thought to apologize, being as he was not quite sure whether it was needed. Josh did not seem all too phased by his presence but that did not mean Devin wanted to be rude or inconsiderate. "Ohhh, then we'll definitely have to get us a paintball game set up at some point." The smile on the blonde's face was bright and unwavering. He listened intently to Josh, growing rather excited at the prospect of getting together a bunch of people and splattering them with colored paint. What better way to spend an afternoon than that? "I like laser tag alright, but I think paintball will be much more entertaining."
A silence came between them, which was of no concern. Devin turned up his head to look up at Josh, who seemed to be off in thought as he surveyed the landscape before them. He shrugged and stood there, also taking in the scenery and allowing the warm summer sun to soak into his skin. It was growing really warm; eventually Devin was going to have to resort to taking off his shirt. Maybe go for a quick dip in the lake if Joshua did not mind. He knew his best friend thrived in this weather, but for Devin there was definitely such a thing as too much heat. "Ah, it's cool," He replied when Joshua finally snapped out of his thoughts. In fact, Devin took that time to meander in his own mind for a few minutes. "I honestly don't know what brought it about." Devin replied, shrugging and chuckling. "It was one of those fleeting thoughts that I decided to kinda spit out randomly. I have tried it before though," He added after Joshua asked about his experience with paintball. It was only once, but it was far enough back that the boy hardly remembered the experience. He did faintly recall being pegged mid-run in the balls, which definitely left him a heap of tears and sobbing afterwards. That was the last time he played, and he resolved to wear thicker clothing this time around despite temperature. "Well, for now I suppose we should find something else to do." Devin would follow Joshua's lead; whatever the man wanted to do, he would do as well. He figured he could be entertained by just about anything.

I HEARD THE TRUTH WAS BUILT TO BEND A MECHANISM TO SUSPEND THE GUILT IS WHAT YOU WILL REQUIRE - - - - - - - - - - - - - -& STILL YOU'VE GOT TO DANCE LITTLE LIAR He dipped his head in response, in no rush to show off what he'd done to the place. He owned it now, they'd have plenty of time for a renewed tour of the mansion. There were several rooms his friend had never even been in despite how long they'd known one another. Some of those rooms were insignificant things like guest rooms and a parlour that was used only on rare occasions but others had been left out of previous buddy-time because his parents had forbidden them. The sun room had been out, too, because it had suffered serious damage to the floors and the panes of some of the windows years back and fallen into disrepair. It was almost fixed now under his careful eye and the capable hands of a few paid workers. It had been one of his favourite rooms in childhood thanks to the sun that poured into it from almost all sides, a wide and circular room at the top of what roughly resembled a tower, though it only went up four floors and the room was domed with a glass ceiling. It overlooked the garden. He remembered his mother saying that it was one of her favourite places, too, and seeing as she'd made the garden it was not hard to tell why. "If I ever want my ass kicked in video games, I'll give you a call." Joshua definitely wasn't an asshole when it came to winning. He didn't like to get competitive because he got mean when he was forced to compete and so he usually did his best to take everything lightly. His father was an exception. The two of them were deadly in a game of tennis.
It was Joshua's time to wave a hand, the movement light and one of dismissal. "Apologising for a friendly visit? Don't." The fact that he called it a friendly visit suggested that he'd already moved on from the real reason that Devin had dropped by. Josh was a master at putting things behind him and ignoring them completely. It was probably one of the reasons that he didn't hold grudges easily. If there was a problem, he dealt with it as best as he could when he had the means and ignored it if he couldn't. Being that he couldn't erase his past with the gang, it was one of the things he ignored. If someone had been causing him problems up front, he'd punch them in the face and consider his vengeance acquired. It was why, despite being quiet and a little solitary like a Thunder, he was not one. Just like most Fires had temper problems, most Thunders craved revenge. Constant revenge, over and over again. "Course it's more entertaining. It's fun to watch someone jump up and down if you shoot them in the foot." He grinned, though in reality he was less fierce than he was joking around about being. Cheap shots were not nice. Oh, he'd definitely peg someone in the gut, but only if he thought they could take the pain. He'd aim for the arms or the chest and back otherwise, places where it hurt less to sustain "injury". Paintball usually just gave bruises.
In staring at the lake he was reminded of water, and Joshua recalled something Nell had said when she'd first moved in and they were having fun around the house. "Ever seen a slip and slide?" he asked casually, wondering if Devin had any idea where this could be going. It was a pretty hot day and it could be fun to create a way to cool down a little while having fun and not taking an outright plunge into the icy water of the lake. Josh trusted the shallows of the lake more than he did those of an ocean, considering the water was familiar to him, but he still wouldn't go any further in than a little above waist height. He wasn't about to go for a dip. "It was Nell who gave me the idea—don't ask," he added, though the fact that he was smiling suggested that if Devin did ask, the answer wouldn't be anything grim. This was Nell they were talking about, after all. Her strange ideas were usually fun and though they could be dangerous, he trusted her. He was pretty sure Devin would, too. "Not this specific idea, mind you, but I think if we got a tarp and ran the hose down it we could get some pretty wicked speed." The house was on a hill and so most of the backyard sloped steadily downward toward the lake but there was a flatter area near the bottom that he thought could work. "If you're up for it, that is," he shrugged. "We could always find something else to get up to."
