THIS WHOLE WORLD SPINS WITH HER FEET OFF THE GROUND SHE'LL MAKE THE STARS APPLAUD when she sits back down THERE'S A BULL'S BLOOD FOUNTAIN IN THE PIT OF A MOAN Nell unzipped her bag, kneeling over it in the foyer as her father went through his checklist, voice coming over through the phone. It was almost nice that he offered to help her get ready. "Poncho?" he asked her. She grinned. "Wrong country." He sighed, and she enjoyed being an irritation for him. "I'm serious." She bit back laughter before she told him. "No one wears ponchos anymore. I don't want to be a tourist in my country of heritage, Papa." It amused her to see people running around in garbage bags in the rain. A raincoat was a little more attractive and less inhibiting. "Are you going to ask me if I have galoshes?" she asked. At his silence, she said, "You're the one who wanted to help me." He had to predict that she would respond this way. She mostly wanted to make sure she had the right clothes for the climate. Nell didn't think it rained too much in Spain during the summer, so she wasn't concerned about bringing a raincoat. Women tended to over pack, but she'd rather not. Juanvi was sure to have a washer.
She zipped the bag back up, scratching behind Pablo's ears when he strolled over to her. "I believe I've got everything." If she didn't, she could just buy certain things over there. She wasn't too concerned about forgetting anything. "All right, just let me get this out of the way. I know I don't have to worry about you running of the bulls..." She rolled her eyes, though she did have to wonder if she'd have participated were it going on. She was eighteen and she wouldn't do it drunk. And hey, she was a fast runner. Not many people were killed, and injuries were always minor. So she would have considered it for the experience. However, she guessed she'd have to wait. There was still the bullfights, however. "Other than that...just don't get carried away, Nell. You know what happens in foreign countries," he said, and she rolled her eyes even though he couldn't see. "How can I not? I don't plan on getting kidnapped and killed, though." She was serious about that, even though she said it facetiously. All-night festivals meant getting carried away. Spain was a country of celebration, and celebrate she would. Last year this attempt at 'parenting' would have gotten her pissed off, but now she was merely amused by it considering she planned to go all out and he most likely knew it.
He attempted another method of attack then. "I just don't want you to cause problems for Juanvi." She heard the unspoken words. "He's one of the only relatives that doesn't hate your guts." Nell scoffed, adjusted the sunglasses on her head. "Juanvi will love me." Well, she hoped. She didn't aim to cause problems for him, or any other family in Spain she had. Some Fuenteses had even returned to Spain after going to New York, mostly to the coast. She heard a grunt on the other end, and apparently her father did not agree. "Call me when you get there," he said, and it was in the rare moments that he showed he cared that kind of confused her. That's what family does, she told herself. She certainly wasn't used to it, but she and her father where trying their hand at it. And they allowed themselves spaces to screw up, because it was okay. She brushed her hands off on her shorts, wondering if she should say 'love you' or something like that, but decided that was too weird.
She hung up with her father picked up Pablo and carried him over to the living room so she could wait for Josh. "Wouldn't you like to see the country you and your brother's names originate from?" Josh had come up with Picasso for his brother, which just made it even better. Just thinking about the art and the literature and the culture of Spain made her excited for this trip. Even though her culture had always been a part of her life thanks to her father's influence, this would be her first trip to the origin of it all. She was simply thankful that she even had this opportunity, and she knew that she had Josh to thank for that. Even though the gift had been giving at one of the lowest points of her life, it had still been appreciated even then. And now she got to appreciate it fully. She was happy and satisfied and drug-free. That was pretty damn good to her.

SHE SWAM OUT OF TONIGHT'S PHANTASM * grabbed my hand , & MADE IT VERY CLEAR "THERE'S ABSOLUTELY NOTHING FOR US HERE" Joshua braced one hand against the bathroom counter as he ran the razor across his face, the water running in the sink creating continuous background noise. He didn't turn his head when he heard the light knock on the bathroom door but invited, "Come in." He appreciated the knock despite its not being necessary. Expecting it to be Nell, he looked toward the door in the mirror that instead revealed Annabel standing with her arms folded and an expression of discontent corrupting her normally cheerful features. "Hey sis," he greeted, setting the razor down and running his fingers over his jaw to find it smooth. Satisfied that he had battled any stubble for yet another day, Josh turned so that he was facing her and leaned sideways against the counter. "You look so pleased to see me, I'm flattered." He arched an eyebrow at her when she tightened her crossed arms and frowned deeper at him. "No, really. I've never felt more loved." Her lip quivered, though by the look in her eyes he assumed it was more out of frustration than upset. "Josh," she said, sounding unamused. "Don't." He had to hand it to her, she kept the whine out of her voice that he would have expected. "I'm serious."
He considered mocking her in order to continue his messing around but decided against it, knowing that now probably wasn't the best time. Suppressing a sigh, he asked, "About what?" She didn't reply immediately, looking around at the walls and the mirror that reflected her sour demeanour. "Ugh. Can we get out of your bathroom first? It's awkward." He snorted and rolled his eyes but gestured out into his room to confirm that he was fine with doing so. "It's a bathroom, Annabel, it's not going to kill you. Besides, at least I've still got all my clothes on." He smirked at her and she whacked his arm as hard as she possibly could, which wasn't that hard considering she was smaller and lighter than he was. "Ew, Josh!" He laughed and shoved her playfully, causing her to glare at him like he'd just committed some unforgivable offence. Huffing, she rolled her eyes and tossed her blonde hair. "Maybe I don't want to talk to you, then. Forget it." Realising he'd gone too far, Joshua relaxed his teasing and caught her arm lightly. "Alright, alright, I'm sorry. What's on your mind?" She shook him off and looked like she might leave anyway so he said, "Seriously, Belle, this is your last chance. The plane leaves in—"
"That's it!" she burst out, stunning him into silence and causing him to blink at her in surprised confusion. An angry noise rising in her throat, she smacked her closed fist against her thigh. "The plane, Josh! That's what's on my mind." He didn't say anything, waiting for her to continue. He was a little unsure as to where this was going and so he figured he would let his sister vent off whatever steam it was she had built up in her small frame before he had to go downstairs and meet up with his fiancée. He hoped Nell couldn't hear the yelling from wherever she was in the house but concluded she probably couldn't. The walls were well insulated and sound didn't carry well even between rooms that were right next to one another, at least not those that had doors. "Why can't I come with you? I never get to go anywhere." Joshua could not help his immediate and rather snarky response of, "That's bullshit, Belle. Mum and Dad have taken us loads of places." She remained looking indignant as she muttered, "Not Spain." He worked his jaw and clenched his own hand slowly, fighting against his temper. "Nell is my fiancée, Annabel. I'm doing this for her, not you. You can't even speak Spanish." He felt a tug of guilt at her expression but stood firm. The fuck didn't she say anything before? he thought in frustration.
His sister opened her mouth to argue further and Joshua gave a sharp shake of his head. "That's enough. Mum'll be here to pick you up within the next half hour and I'll see you when I get back, alright?" When he went to give her a hug she shoved him and left the room, causing the Fire graduate to sigh and run a hand through his hair. She'll get over it. He hoped so, anyway. He'd have preferred parting on better terms but he knew he didn't have the luxury of staying behind to calm her down. They'd need to leave any minute now. He packed the last few essentials, tested the locks and zippers on everything to make sure it they were safely sealed, then headed downstairs and found Nell in the living room. He smiled and kissed her when he drew close, lingering and resting a hand against her waist. "Ready to go?" he asked when he pulled away. He heard the faint slam of a door from upstairs and chewed the inside of his lip. "She's not taking this too well," he said, shaking his head slowly. She's not ruining this for me. "It'll be alright, though. I'm sure my parents have something planned." He would have preferred to wait around and make sure Trish picked Annabel up alright but he knew this would be taking risks. "Anything you need to grab before we head out?" He was quite excited about this trip, even if Annabel wasn't.

THIS WHOLE WORLD SPINS WITH HER FEET OFF THE GROUND SHE'LL MAKE THE STARS APPLAUD when she sits back down THERE'S A BULL'S BLOOD FOUNTAIN IN THE PIT OF A MOAN Nell walked around with Pablo, bouncing him in her arms like a baby. He was very still, as if planning his escape. As long as he wasn't struggling to escape, she'd keep him in her arms. "Now say it with me, Pablo. El burro sabe mas que tu.." His eyes stayed fixated to a spot on the wall, and she sighed. "Right, that's a little too rudimentary for you," she said. It was one of the first lessons she got in Spanish, after learning the alphabet alongside the English one. Sometimes it had been confusing, but she knew it was actually a pretty good way to learn both languages. "Well, even though your hold on the language is strong, I'm still afraid you can't go." She dropped him, running her hands down her tank top to get his fur off. She didn't both with lint rollers unless going somewhere important, and she was sure no one at the airport would mind some cat hair, probably wouldn't even pay much attention to her. Besides, she wouldn't care. She was trying to bottle up all the excitement she felt about the trip.
That's why she was happy to see Josh, returning his kiss with a smile. At his question, she just couldn't resist, even though she would regret for how stupid it was. "I was born ready." She flinched away jokingly as if expecting to be thwacked over the head for her cliche. As she had not heard the argument while she was busy giving the cat an impromptu Spanish lesson, she lifted her eyebrow at the sound, looking up at the ceiling as if she could see through it and find out what Annabel was up to. She looked back to Josh, taking his word for it, and said, "Well if you say so..." It sucked that Annabel wasn't taking too well to the trip, even though she knew about it for a while. Nell didn't want her to feel left out or anything, and then reminded her that she was still just a kid, even if she was considered a teenager by society's standards. Hopefully Josh was right and she'd be too preoccupied with her parents to think about Spain.
Nell gestured with her head toward the foyer. "Nope, got my bags out there. Papa called to make sure I got everything I need. He suggested a fanny pack, but I told him I don't think so." Of course, he had only been trolling back, and he was helpful in reminding her to bring her passport. She had to get her birth certificate from him, too, which she decided she'd keep. Wouldn't want to give him too much power. "You have everything? Passport, license, poncho..." She smiled at the last part. Please don't let him have a poncho. "Oh, and I got electrical adaptors." Something else her father had to remind her about, and she was glad that he did, else she would have forgotten that Europe had different types of outlets. "And I packed food for the road. Because that's a necessity." She believed they were both on top of things, and was ready to get to the airport and out of the country. Love you, Canada, but I'm going to España. "We should probably get moving, I guess."

SHE SWAM OUT OF TONIGHT'S PHANTASM * grabbed my hand , & MADE IT VERY CLEAR "THERE'S ABSOLUTELY NOTHING FOR US HERE" He laughed when she mentioned a fanny pack, shaking his head with amusement. He had a strange and reluctant respect for Nell's father thanks to his help in certain situations, though of course the memory of the second abandonment made him a little bitter toward the man. He'd nearly lost Nell during that time and he didn't have any familial attachments that would soften his anger if that had happened. They were past that now, though, and so he felt nothing other than his amusement. "Please, Nell, I am a walking poncho." He grinned at her and figured she'd know what he meant by that. Raincoats and any sort of equivalent (umbrellas, ponchos, anything to shield from rain) irritated him. Jackets and heavy clothing irritated him. It was all part of being a Fire elemental. He'd need to be careful with his powers when in front of the Spanish mortals of course but in that case he'd suffer a little rain rather than taking extra precautions. "Passport and license, yes. I always keep the important things on me." He carried his details around with him in case something came up for which they were needed. It was always better than making a trip back to his house to fetch them. "Mm, yeah, I was meaning to ask about those. Good thing you saved me the trouble!" He'd been to Europe before and so understood their necessity.
The fact that Nell had packed food did not surprise him in the least. He would have been more surprised to find her having forgot to do so and so Joshua nodded. "We've got a hell of a drive waiting for us," he said. It was the only thing about the trip that he wasn't too thrilled about. It would take over half a day's straight driving to get to the Vancouver airport and that was if they made good time, which was the precise reason he didn't want to waste any time on comforting his sister and making sure Patricia showed up soon. He loved his sister but he was going to have to place his trust in his mother. "I've paid the staff to take care of the pets while we're gone and make sure the house stays in order. I've also given them my cellphone number so they can call if anything comes up." His parents had offered to watch the cats but he figured it was best to take the stress off of them. They still had lives and jobs despite having moved—it wasn't a retirement they'd gone into, just a smaller place of residence. It was still large enough to accommodate all the animals (if Nell's apartment could, anything was possible) but he'd turned down the offer. He trusted the house staff. "Is there anything specific you want to tell them for Pablo? We could leave a note or something." He'd instructed them to take special care around Apache thanks to the cat's blindness and he'd told them to only use the pet food that was already in the house but he didn't know if Nell had other things to add.
Confident that their business was in order, he smiled and then grinned. "I can hardly wait." Joshua offered to drive since he'd looked up how to get to the airport and knew the best routes to take, not nearly as challenged with directions as Nell was. He didn't trust the internet for directions as much as some and so he'd cross-referenced several sources to be sure that he knew where he was going. Apart from his excitement for all the culture and history in Spain, Joshua was also excited because this symbolised a sort of freedom for Nell. She could get across the border now without having to lie about herself, about who she was. They could live without fear of someone finding out. That was part of the reason he'd arranged this whole thing to begin with. When they were on the road, in order to pass some time, Josh started conversation. "So what'll we do once we get there? I'm assuming we'll need to stop in at your great grandfather's, yeah?" He was looking forward to meeting the man, even if he did have the normal apprehension that came with meeting your partner's relatives—especially since the two he had met weren't very fond. Jane had nearly taken him out and Leon had not tried to disguise his displeasure. "Anything you want to check out first, after we do that?"
[Did research on driving times/airports and shit >.> You can decide what city in Spain they're flying to~]

THIS WHOLE WORLD SPINS WITH HER FEET OFF THE GROUND SHE'LL MAKE THE STARS APPLAUD when she sits back down THERE'S A BULL'S BLOOD FOUNTAIN IN THE PIT OF A MOAN She rolled her eyes at his words, poking him in the chest. "I don't have the liberty of an elemental force field, thank you very much." Hell, sometimes she wondered if she got rained on it she would grow taller like a plant. She hoped for that. It looked like they were both at top of things, and she felt like she should give a shout out to teamwork. She was proud of herself, considering this was really her first trip outside of the continent. She'd hopped borders and gone on a road trip with Josh before, but it was another thing to enter an entirely different culture. Well, not entirely. At least they wouldn't be too out of place. If either of them were blond, maybe, and of a darker complexion. But both of them could pass as Europeans. There was something weird about being a tourist. Even when she came to Canada, she felt like everyone was looking at her like she had no idea what she was doing. Probably because she'd felt that way. "Well, looks like we're pretty much set," she said unnecessarily, considering that the checklist wasn't anything too major. Even if certain things couldn't be bought there, they could just improvise.
He mentioned the drive, and it was a little something that worried her, but not too much. It really was just a minor little thing that she wasn't often concerned with. "We should make a few stops." Nell wondered if he understood why, but she would explain to him if he questioned or wanted to make good time. She didn't want to be a burden or anything and hold them up. Nell was fine in cars for short periods of time. If she rolled down a window or something, she could probably last a long while. As Josh spoke, she couldn't help the feeling of the lifestyle clash again. She still wasn't used to living in a mansion, and sometimes she felt uncomfortable. "Okay," she said slowly, just leaving that kind of stuff to him. Nell wasn't really made for the life of the rich and well-to-do. She didn't know if she'd ever get used to it. She shook her head. Just as she didn't like to be burdensome, Pablo wasn't a cat that needed extra care either. He ate and slept and wreaked havoc as all cats do. Now that Nell had room, she was considering getting more animals. Birds, specifically, but she didn't know what Josh felt about that and was still too uncomfortable to ask things like that. She was taking her time to acclimate to even the idea of living like this. Nell knew she wanted it, but she just needed to...settle again.
Nell flicked her sunglasses down in a sign that she was ready to get real. In only a short amount of time in the car, she had her sandals kicked off and feet tucked underneath her, Gameboy in her hands. At Josh's question, she nodded at him. "He lives in El Castillo, just outside of the city." By the 'city' she meant Madrid, the capitol. They'd be flying to the airport Madrid-Bajaras, so it wouldn't take long to get there. "Papa tells me he likes drinking, showing his battle scars from running with the bulls, and challenging strangers to arm-wrestling, so I'm kind of curious to actually meet him," she admitted. In her mind's eye she saw him as a ruddy, stout man that resembled Santa Claus. He didn't seem like a Fuentes to her, but go figure. Thinking of something, she turned off her Gameboy and reached under her seat for the bag, and searched through it for the map she had. She opened up the map, a detailed physical one that she could barely read. The red and blue lines made her feel like she was looking at the circulatory system of Spain. "Well, there's so much to do. I definitely want to see a bullfight and go to a few museums," she said, her eyes following the lines up to Barcelona. "There's a lot to do in Barcelona, it's on the coast. And I would suggest Pamplona, but the San Fermín festival isn't going on now." Some other time for that. There were a lot of other festivals. She couldn't list off all the things she wanted to do--including trying tapas at the bars and having real paella--so she said, "What do you really want to see?" The country had a lot to offer.

SHE SWAM OUT OF TONIGHT'S PHANTASM * grabbed my hand , & MADE IT VERY CLEAR "THERE'S ABSOLUTELY NOTHING FOR US HERE" Joshua did not think much about why she wanted to stop, deciding to ask her rather than agreeing to it and spending the rest of the time speculating. "Mm? What for?" His tone was light and didn't suggest that he was going to argue with her on the subject. He wouldn't mind stopping himself, whether it be for a meal at a roadside diner or to take a break from driving. He loved cars and he loved being on the road but even Josh got bored of nothing but roads for sixteen hours straight. He couldn't indulge in the past-time of staring out the window and watching scenery fly by, either, because he had to watch the road ahead. That was okay with him. He was excited enough for their trip to Spain that he was not going to raise any complaints. "We can stop, though, yeah. As long as it's not for too long—wouldn't want to miss our flight!" They could always try and get the next one but he'd much have preferred getting on the plane and leaving rather than waiting around the airport for hours or longer until the next flight to Spain was available. There was no better way to ruin a trip than cutting your time short. He almost wished they could have spent the entire summer in Spain in order to have more time to sight-see and experience the culture but he'd known in advance that they did not have that much freedom. Both worked, after all. Securing a week off could often be a pain in the backside.
He was entirely oblivious to how strange she found things that to Josh were completely normal. He'd grown up in the lap of luxury and was used to having things that most people did not. He also didn't think that Nell might be a little overwhelmed by all of it. Perhaps he should have been more sensitive to their different situations and personalities but he was not the type that often gave much thought to these things. "Sucks that we missed the running," he mused when Nell mentioned it. He didn't know whether they would have actually participated if they'd gone in time for it but he definitely would have watched something like that. Some cried that it was animal cruelty but he was not an activist. Vegetarian, yes, but that didn't mean he was going to start chaining himself to trees to save forests or participating in protests. "Arm wrestling, huh? Sounds like a real gentleman." He was kidding, though, and smiling as he said it. Arm wrestling was actually pretty fun if your opponent didn't take it so seriously that they stormed off in a huff if they lost or rubbed it in your face for hours if they didn't. He found that it was like that a lot at bars and so stuck mostly to playing pool or the odd game of poker if he wasn't too drunk to keep a neutral expression. "I'm looking forward to meeting him, too. I just hope he doesn't dislike me." He kept his tone light but there was a subtle hint of actual concern lurking in it. That would cause problems.
He nodded when she mentioned a bullfight and museums, having no protest to either of these things. In fact, he looked forward to them as well. "Same here. Especially the museums. Spain has some great art museums that I want to poke around." Hell, the pair of them had named their cats Pablo and Picasso. He was also excited for the bullfight despite the fact that it might be a little cruel. Such was life, it happened. It was an important part of Spanish culture and he wasn't going to miss out on something like that. "Do you know a good bull ring? I know some of them aren't in operation any more, but I'm sure we'll find one." Josh thought about it when Nell turned the question around to him. He couldn't be as excited about the food-tasting as she was thanks to his diet but he definitely wanted to try some of the things that were safe for his consumption. This wasn't important enough to mention (in his eyes) though, so he said, "Well I know I want to see Ronda, if we get the chance," he mused, remembering a picture he'd came across once. It had fascinated him and he definitely wanted to experience the sights. Mountains and cliffs were a part of his life growing up, they were home, so they fascinated him in other places. "Barcelona, definitely, it's architecture is supposed to be amazing. Maybe Granada or Seville. I've always wanted to visit the Alhambra. We could take a tour or something." It had been mentioned in some of the history books he owned and so, naturally, Josh felt drawn to it. "There so much to do. We might have to go back next year, too!" He grinned, more serious than he might have sounded.

THIS WHOLE WORLD SPINS WITH HER FEET OFF THE GROUND SHE'LL MAKE THE STARS APPLAUD when she sits back down THERE'S A BULL'S BLOOD FOUNTAIN IN THE PIT OF A MOAN She sighed, though it gave no sign of unpleasantness, just lamenting the fact that she knew she'd have to do it. "Can't be stuck in the car too long," she said. Nell didn't want a panic attack after all, so breaks would probably be for the best. "Don't worry, I won't take too long." Maybe stretch out a bit or something. And considering she had food, it wasn't like her bladder would keep it all in for a half-day drive. She wouldn't want to keep them up, after all. She had the tingles about this trip. Nell tried to imagine the streets filled with bulls, but seeing as she'd never experienced anything like it, there was little room for a mental picture in her head. "Eh, it happens every year, there'll be chances," she said easily. She really would like to do it someday. Bulls were her favorite animals. She laughed at his words, trying to shift the image of her bisabuelo. More like a barrel chested man, or Hemingway, full beard and all. "He sounds like a man's man," she commented, imagining he probably liked fishing as well, though she'd have to ask when she met him. "Or The Most Interesting Man in the World. He doesn't always drink beer..." she said, finishing with a light chuckle. It would be interesting, meeting him, given that he was her great grandfather. She had to wonder, since he raised Pilar. But she just found the males in the family didn't have good with relationships with their fathers. "Ah, what's there to dislike about you?" she cooed, scratching her neck. "But you might need to prove your worth in a game of soccer."
Bullfighting was truly an art form, something that a lot didn't take not of. So much went into it, so many people, and it was as specific as an open-heart operation. Equally as risky, quite literally dancing on a knife's edge. The matador's outfits were pretty snazzy too, she had to admit her silent weakness for them. Their silk jackets and monteras, the capes like shells, pink coating, yellow within. She immediately knew the answer about the bullring, simply because it was the most popular one. "Las Ventas," she said, fingers gliding along Sierra de Grados. Plaza de Toros, world famous and all that. Right in Madrid, nonetheless. "Maybe we can see Enrique Ponce fight." She doubted it. That was like going to a concert and Paul McCartney hopping on stage to perform a song. He mentioned Ronda, and she snorted. "You want to go all over the place. Ronda's in the deep south." Her eyes followed the circulatory map down until she found it. Luckily, Madrid was the center of everything in the country. And besides, she wanted it all. Cascada de diablo, wine bodegas, fields of bleeding poppies, the windmills of La Mancha. She wanted to imagine Don Quixote charging them on horseback, dodging their giant's arms, el caballo. So many things she couldn't imagine just yet, because she didn't know how to. She got to have this now, but she'd always remember the cost.
At the mention of tours, she seemed to mull it over. "But tours miss some of the best things. We could find some friendly natives to show us around." Official tours sometimes skipped over the best sights. Besides, the Spanish locals really were friendly. She believed that New York changed the Fuenteses, considering it was a completely different place. In Spain, everyone was exuberant and loud and friendly. She could imagine that one wouldn't mind showing them around. Perhaps even find an opera house, since that's something she'd really like. There was the Liceu opera house in Barcelona, dome roofs over the water, but she didn't know how Josh felt about that. She wouldn't drag him to something a lot considered 'boring'. But then again, she didn't find museums or ruins boring, so who knew. "Every year," she added. And she wanted to go to other countries, wanted to see Mongolia and Russia, Amsterdam and Freiberg. Even go back to New York, see the things she never could. "There's a whole big world out there, though," she commented, finger drawing circles over Segovia. "I want to go to a lot of other places." She blinked, then shook her head. Maybe Josh would ignore that. She didn't like talking about what she wanted.

SHE SWAM OUT OF TONIGHT'S PHANTASM * grabbed my hand , & MADE IT VERY CLEAR "THERE'S ABSOLUTELY NOTHING FOR US HERE" He wondered if her worry about staying in the car had anything to do with her claustrophobia or whether it was something else, though he did not ask. There was no reason to interrogate her when he already knew that he was going to agree to most anything she asked. Joshua never liked to force Nell into doing things she did not want and if staying in the car for long periods of time was one of those things, it would be no exception. "No problem," he assured her. "Besides, it'll be nice to take a little break from driving every now and then." Though largely pessimistic about some things, Josh was certainly capable of seeing bright sides. He wasn't a difficult guy when it came to cooperation with his friends and loved ones—rather, his difficulties arose when he did not like someone or felt uncomfortable with his situation. His gray eyes were amused as he said seamlessly, "But when he does, I bet he breaks the bottle over his forehead like a man." Giving up the façade for a slight scoff, he said, "Can you imagine how much that would hurt?" He was good at the little party trick of opening the bottle by breaking the top off on the side of a table but his forehead was another matter entirely. At the mention of soccer he laughed. "Well that's me fucked, then." He realised that Nell didn't know he actually could play soccer, though not very well, but didn't point it out because he'd been messing around as usual.
He smiled, nodding. "I know where it is, I've seen a map. It's a vacation, we're meant to see as much as we can." Joshua loved vacationing, mainly because it was one waste of time that was worthwhile. Sitting around and watching television made him antsy for he was learning very little and not doing anything productive. Travelling wasn't the most productive thing in the world but at least you could learn about different cultures and experience the sights when you were journeying around. "We'll have the entire week. Still not enough to do everything that I'd like but it'll still give us time." His thoughts went to Annabel for a moment and he realised that she'd be stuck at home with his parents while he was taking trips around the ruins and practising his Spanish in interactions with the locals. He wasn't half bad at it thanks to Nell and he wondered if she'd fare well in Quebec or even France. Canadian French was a little different than the actual language but he figured there were enough similarities that he could comfortably survive in either place. I'd like to see France, he thought. He'd been to Quebec before. "That's true," he concluded of the tour. "I've heard it's difficult to get tickets in the summer, though. Shall I try and book some when we take a break from driving?" He wouldn't mind placing his trust in the locals to show them around. He wasn't too paranoid about travelling in foreign countries—in fact, a little more caution might have done him good, but he didn't have any bad experiences to worry him.
Unfortunately for Nell, Joshua both acknowledged and decided to comment on her wants. "Really? What kinds of places?" He did not realise how difficult it was for Nell to talk about herself, especially because he found her so interesting. He liked to hear about her desires and interests a lot more than he liked talking about his own, though Joshua had no problem in sharing his dreams with her. He was not an open person but there were barely any walls between them. She'd found her way past the nearly impenetrable fortress that was his mind. "We should go on trips like this every year," he said. "Maybe in the winter, too. We could go somewhere warm and get away from the snow for a while." He was entirely serious and both his tone and demeanour suggested this, despite the fact that his gaze was fixed firmly on the road ahead. "There are loads of places I want to see. It almost feels like I wouldn't be able to if I tried." Sometimes he fantasized about taking the entire summer off and going on a round-trip to experience the world. He shrugged. "I will try, though."
[Can I just lol over the fact that her favourite animal is a bull and Josh's star sign is Taurus?]

THIS WHOLE WORLD SPINS WITH HER FEET OFF THE GROUND SHE'LL MAKE THE STARS APPLAUD when she sits back down THERE'S A BULL'S BLOOD FOUNTAIN IN THE PIT OF A MOAN Nell figured he wouldn't have many objections over the break deal. "You will be staying in this car and you will like it." She didn't think she'd appreciate that much, now how. Of course, that wasn't something she needed to worry about with Josh. On the matter of her Hemingway lookalike bisabuelo, she tilted her head and squinted out the windshield. "And then stitches his own wound, because hospitals are for chicks." It said something for the fact that they could go on and on without a question about how weird this could be to an outsider. "Ooh yes, I've spent quite a bit of time contemplating grievous injury to the cranium," she said matter-of-factly. The man would probably know the best routes to take for all the places both of them want to go. "Better get a car good with gas mileage then," she commented, because she had no objections. "Or hitch rides in farmers' trucks." There were a lot in the more rural areas, as with every country. She wouldn't be opposed to that, actually. She'd never had a bad experience with hitch-hiking. Well, none that were particularly scarring, and she supposed that she'd just gotten lucky, really.
Nell snorted. He had a point about the tickets actually. It was hard to do much in the summer, since everyone was on vacation. "Sure, that would be good." She was glad that they wouldn't have to do much in terms of official business past customs. Otherwise they'd spend their afternoons in lines and she wanted to enjoy siesta even though it wouldn't really be a siesta for her. She shrugged at his question, pulling her bag out from under the seat. In it she'd packed food and her camera, her wallet, a notebook, El Cid, her deck--the Mary Poppins of totes. She found her pen, and started to draw little landmarks, windmills in Toledo, aqueducts in Catalonia, lions for the statues in front of Barcelona's cathedrals. "All of them," she said. No longer was the world a flat image on a piece of paper for her, it was real and her grasp was far-reaching. "The temples in Bali, the volcano houses in Turkey, Suqatra Island in Yemen...everywhere." She squeezed in Dali's head next to the aqueduct, mustache and all. Nell tilted her head at her map canvas when Josh spoke, no feeling in her legs anymore. "Yeah," she agreed. Not even to escape to the snow. Go to Siberia, the frozen tundra. She drew dolphins in the Costa del Sol. "The world is a big place." She drew an arrow pointing to where America would be, then another toward France, north toward the UK, south toward Africa.
The trip was less painful than she thought it would be. And the third plane experience of her life was luckily a pleasant one this time. Unfortunately, there was no escape from the capsule, so she just focused on talking to Josh, doodling on her arms or reading the Scientific American she stole from her father, El Cid for the fifth time. She couldn't say she enjoyed ten hour flights, but she didn't complain. Inside the high-ceiling airport supported by colorful beams, skylights birthing the sun's rays, it was difficult to realize they were in a different country. The conversations of those all around gave it away, and Nell felt the first hit of culture shock. "I'm going to call papa and Juanvi to tell them we're here. You wanna take care of getting a car?" she asked, already taking out her phone. It was as if she didn't feel the jet lag, adrenaline humming through her veins. "We'll stop by abuelito's to drop our bags off." She'd spoken to him a few times before, and she never minded meeting new people.

SHE SWAM OUT OF TONIGHT'S PHANTASM * grabbed my hand , & MADE IT VERY CLEAR "THERE'S ABSOLUTELY NOTHING FOR US HERE" Joshua would have placed his hand over his heart if they hadn't been on the wheel in order to mock offence, though he did his best in allowing his tone to convey his falsified emotions. "Was that a disguised jab at my masculinity, Ms. Shepherd? I find I'm quite offended." They worked so seamlessly and easily off one another. It was a comfortable co-existence, one which Joshua thrived upon and respected. He had subtle connections with all of his friends but none were as profound as this. Nell knew him better than they did and vice versa, so they were able to predict how the other might react and take confidence in the fact that jokes would be understood as such. He vaguely recalled a time when he had been unable to joke with her at all but that was far behind them now. "I'll go with the car." He trusted the Spanish locals but he wasn't sure he'd be comfortable relying on hitch-hiking. Not only was he so proud that he hated relying solely on others to get where he needed to go, he also didn't want any danger. There was a thin line between trusting the natives and trusting too much. He was determined not to cross it. He wondered what Nell thought of hitch-hiking and whether she knew of all the horror stories but didn't ask.
"I'd like to see the Kinderdijk windmills in Holland," he said. "Maybe Easter Island or the Amazon rainforests." Some time later, Josh pulled into a roadside stop to fill up on gas, then parking outside of the diner and going inside. Free wi-fi had been very welcome for what he needed to do. His fingers tapped steadily on the keys and he was able to book the tickets without too much of a hassle. Without looking up from the computer screen, he gave Nell the thumbs up and finalized everything, then closed his laptop and flagged one of the waitresses down so that he could order something to drink. He made sure to stop whenever Nell requested it and they still managed to make good time to the airport, boarding their flight without many difficulties. He had almost no problem with flying compared to boats and so he was entirely relaxed as he conversed with Nell. When she went silent to read her material he pulled out a book of his own and indulged. He slept for a few hours as well, since he'd been awake for ages and knew he'd need at least some energy to keep himself going. He found himself glancing with interest around the airport, proud to find he could understand what snatches of conversation he heard. There were some words unfamiliar to him but he had a strong enough grasp on the language that he could get the gist of most things.
He smiled and gave her a light-hearted salute when she left the car up to him. He left Nell's company for a while in order to go pick up the car and called his own family before heading back, wanting them to know he'd touched down safely. He greeted his mother in Spanish when she picked up the phone and they shared a laugh for a moment before she said, "Was your flight okay?" He told her that it was, and they exchanged some other pleasantries in light tones. He learned that his father was not at home and so he couldn't come to the phone. Annabel did, however, almost shyly apologising for her attitude. He smiled, though she couldn't see him. "Don't worry about it, Belle. I'm not upset." He had to cut the call short so that Nell was not left wondering where he'd gotten to but he promised that he would call her when he next had some free time. Joshua yawned as he rejoined the company of his fiancée, nodding. "There's nothing we need to do before we head over, right?" He wasn't sure if there was anything Nell wanted to take care of first. He was ready to go, though he was a patient guy and wouldn't mind a delay. Fuck, I'm tired, though. It would pass. He would invest in something heavily caffienated at first chance.

THIS WHOLE WORLD SPINS WITH HER FEET OFF THE GROUND SHE'LL MAKE THE STARS APPLAUD when she sits back down THERE'S A BULL'S BLOOD FOUNTAIN IN THE PIT OF A MOAN Nell chuckled when he saluted, called her father first since he probably knew the exact time they'd arrive. "Remember what I said. Juanvi is a good man. Don't give him a heart attack." She rolled her eyes, wondering what idea of her he had in his head and then recalling the fact she had been a terrible person to her father. She called Juanvi to get some last minute directions to where he lived. Those would have to go to Josh, of course. "We'll be there soon, so get decent." He laughed, the sound coming straight from the stomach, before she bade him adios. It was strange, knowing that she could speak in the language and not have people wonder what she was saying. She scratched her head when Josh came back and questioned anything else and said, "Nope, don't think so." Outside it was warm, and she was glad she didn't listen to her father when he advised her to wear a jacket at least for the plane. It wasn't uncomfortable heat, however, and she made comparisons to the city laid out before her to the ones she'd come from, both Maple Hollow and New York City. Air pollution was definitely at a low, she could see the tops of the buildings, a slate blue sky. Fountains dotted the airport, and the rest of the city was equally as elegant. She rolled down the windows, leaning out to take pictures like the tourist she was.
She was glad the drive didn't last long, and they arrived at the house with its long drive and rusting gates. She was surprised by the amount of foliage that protected the place from view. Ivy clung to the stucco walls, the peaked roof painted red. A pool curved around the side, clear and sparkling beneath the sun. She walked up the front steps, ringing the door bell. The door opened almost immediately after, and she was ushered in by a man with a beard, hand around her back. "You've finally arrived." His booming voice filled the front hallway, bright and lit by skylights, plants hanging on the walls. "I was beginning to wonder if you lost your way." He stood back and she got a good look at him, his slanted eyes, brown just like the rest of his family, hair white as fresh snow. He was rather large, not fat, but bulky. She definitely got the Hemingway vibe from him. She placed down her suitcase, looked around, up the spiral staircase adjacent to the hall, further down the corridor to where she believed the kitchen might be. Everything was so bright. "This place is great," she said, and Juanvi scoffed. Everything about him took a presence of its own. "Thank you, thank you, I try." She couldn't believe this man had raised Pilar, that he had anything to do with Pilar. Or her father, even.
Nell turned her gaze back to him, smiling. She had the fish out of water feeling, mostly because this was a relative. Relatives had never been good in the past. "It's nice to meet you," she said, using the formal usted which did not go unnoticed by the man. "Please, I'm no stranger," he said, correcting her formal speech. She liked him. "I thought the day when I'd meet you would never come. I'm getting on in years!" Juanvi gripped her hand before pulling her in to press his cheeks against hers in an air kiss. He did the same to Josh, saying in affected English, "Ah, it's great to meet you Joshua. My future great grandson in-law, huh." He kept a hand on his arm, clapping it as he said this, and Nell had to wonder if it hurt with the force behind it. "How are you? Your family?" He stood very close, the Spanish as affectionate as puppies and even more so. The country itself felt warm and inviting. "How was the flight? Long, I bet. All the way from Canada, I can't imagine," he continued in English, shaking his head. "Would you too like anything to eat? Drink?" She looked to Josh, wondering if he wanted to get going or if he'd like to get a meal first. As for drinking, she recalled that the drinking age was eighteen in most places, and she was glad she had the liberty since she would be doing so during the festivals.

SHE SWAM OUT OF TONIGHT'S PHANTASM * grabbed my hand , & MADE IT VERY CLEAR "THERE'S ABSOLUTELY NOTHING FOR US HERE" Joshua tilted his head toward the sun, the Fire elemental allowing its warm rays to seep through him and fill him with a feeling of energy, vitality. He loved the warmth. He liked the rain in spring, the heat in summer, the colours in autumn, and almost nothing about the winter. It was snowy, it was cold, and he'd take this heat before it any day of the week. He took a moment to admire the verdant scenery around the home as he pulled into the driveway, allowing Nell to take the lead as they approached the house. It was her relative they were visiting and so it only made sense. He was not entirely sure what he was expecting to see when the door opened, didn't really have an appearance in mind when he thought of the man. He was mostly worried about his reception, seeing as he'd gotten a less-than-great one thus far with Nell's family. Though large and grandeur homes were not strange to him, Josh still found himself admiring the taste of the man who lived in this one when he stepped inside. He nodded in agreement when Nell commented on the home, though he did not add in his own remarks. He didn't want to interrupt their greeting, though he found himself immensely relieved by how friendly Juanvi really seemed to be. Why couldn't her whole family be like this? he wondered, the thought almost amusing him.
He was surprised when the man greeted him just as warmly as he had Nell, though Josh was good at hiding such things and so he merely responded with a smile. "It's good to meet you as well," he replied, hoping that the sincerity of the statement shone through in his tone. It was nice to meet a family member of Nell's that didn't want him out of her life or otherwise threatened. The hand on his arm was certainly not the lightest sensation but it was nothing too uncomfortable and so he did not have any reaction to it. "We're all well, thank you." It was strange to be asked seemingly genuine questions about his well-being from someone he'd been quite worried was going to hate him. He now realised why Nell hadn't seemed too concerned about it. "Yourself?" He was relieved that the man did speak some English, even if it wasn't entirely perfect, because while he knew good Spanish it was easier to understand his own native tongue. He laughed and nodded in agreement when the man mentioned the flight, remembering exactly how long it had felt. "It was definitely long, though I didn't mind it too much." He was patient, and catching up on a little bit of sleep had been a bonus.
He noticed Nell glancing at him when her great grandfather offered a meal, dipping his head. "I'm alright with staying a while if you are." If Nell was impatient to get out into the streets of Spain he would not be the one to hold her back but he was hungry from the long flight and definitely wouldn't say no to any sort of beverage that could sate his thirst. He'd gotten tickets of the best available class for comfort and so it had not been a bad flight but that didn't rule out hunger. He preferred real meals to those served aboard planes. "Besides, we could surely use the energy, right?" Not that Nell ever seemed particularly low on that but even she was a human being with a limit. Food would give them extra energy to burn and allow them to stay up longer, stay out later, approach everything they were doing with total vigour. Joshua found that he felt relaxed around Juanvi and didn't feel unwelcome in the house, something that was of further relief to him. He gave Nell a soft smile and a nod to convey this to her, hoping that she knew what he meant.

THIS WHOLE WORLD SPINS WITH HER FEET OFF THE GROUND SHE'LL MAKE THE STARS APPLAUD when she sits back down THERE'S A BULL'S BLOOD FOUNTAIN IN THE PIT OF A MOAN Nell wished that she could have had Juanvi back home in Canada, some family that didn't consider her the spawn of Satan or someone who should have never been born, a black mark on the world. And someone who didn't attack Josh just for being around her. The elderly man seemed genuinely pleased with her fiancé's response to his questions. "Ah, there's a sport," Juanvi said, his laugh seeming to fill his body. Nell was tempted to ask how old he was, since she half expected him to be in a wheel-chair. Her father and his father were pretty young considering, so she guessed that this could have been expecting. "I prefer boats myself, but they're a bit more hassle, si." Apparently he couldn't really balance in English. It meant a lot that he was considerate of Josh, even though she knew he'd have done well in the country. They apparently appreciated foreigners' attempts to communicate in their language. And Josh had a good grip on the language. It was one of the easiest to learn, and a lot of the natives learned it, along with others like Basque and Catalan.
Nell was very glad when Josh said that he wouldn't mind staying. Juanvi lifted his snowy eyebrows, and said, "I'm sure you want to get a way from me as quickly as possible. Young people, so much energy. You should be thankful." Nell ducked her head and laughed. "I'd like to stay a bit. Papa didn't tell too many horror stories." And then her great grandfather said something that set her a little on edge, but the feeling didn't last that long. "Your father sounded very suspicious about you. Thought you'd cause me trouble," he noted, and Nell couldn't help the grin. Apparently he hadn't mentioned Josh in that, for which she was thankful. "Oh, you know him. He's a suspicious guy." It was strange, acknowledging that this man must have known about the abandonment. How long had they been in contact? There was a rising of bitterness like bile when considering her father may have kept in contact with his grandfather.
Nell followed the man back into the kitchen, lit by the ceiling-to-floor windows, almost looking like a greenhouse. She sat down at the island, folded her hands politely. "Where do you two plan on going?" he asked, pouring out lemonade from a pitcher. Nell smirked. "Oh, a lot of places. Hey, we might even get to Portugal." He handed glasses to both her and Josh, went back to the fridge. "You wanna tell him about your whole vegetarian deal before he pulls out a platter of chicken wings," she asked Josh, her voice a light tease. Juanvi had apparently heard her, and said, "Luckily for you I am psychic, and I have olives in garlic, some cheese and bread. Here, here." He placed down the plates, and she stuck one of the olives, as he said, "First meal in Spain, children, enjoy." She grinned as she continued speaking of their plan of attack, "Any fights tonight?" They might as well hang around Madrid and get the culture there first. "Ah, every night, mija. I suppose you'd like to see all de other sights, too?" Nell nodded, and asked Josh, "What kind of museums do you wanna hit?"

SHE SWAM OUT OF TONIGHT'S PHANTASM * grabbed my hand , & MADE IT VERY CLEAR "THERE'S ABSOLUTELY NOTHING FOR US HERE" Joshua decided that he definitely liked this man. He seemed to radiate friendliness compared to the other relatives of Nell's he'd met and the feeling of being welcomed put him at ease quite quickly. It was amusing to think that Juanvi preferred boats when Joshua would sooner skydive to his location but he kept this to himself. His fear of water wasn't a particularly bizarre one but he still refrained from making it known if necessary. At least he didn't get seasick, which would be a double kick to the gut every time he was forced to board a boat. Motion sickness had never been something Joshua was plagued with and he considered himself lucky. It was common. He shook his head and grinned when the man mentioned wanting to get away. "It's been a long trip and it's pleasant here. I don't mind staying a while." He laughed at Nell's response and also made note of his own absence from the warnings. At least that's a good thing. He and Leon had never seen eye to eye on things but it relieved him to know that Nell's great grandfather was not harbouring any prejudice. Definitely liked him. It was interesting to see him and Nell talking so easily. She deserved good family members. Her father was better than Jane at least but Josh found it hard to forget how close he'd come to losing her.
He was glad for his rigid upbringing and how his parents had instructed him about good manners, never wanting to be that guest in someone's home. The one that treated it like a cheap hotel room and had the place trashed by morning. He was never the sort to disrespect someone's property and he sat beside Nell, taking in the floor to ceiling windows and being reminded of his own kitchen back home. Was it a common thing in mansions? He liked it. Joshua was fond of any place where the light could pour in from outside, the sun lighting the way like electricity could not. "Anywhere and everywhere," he replied, glancing to Nell when she also responded. "Would you really go to Portugal?" he wondered, sounding genuinely interested. Heck, he'd hop across all the borders and travel the world if they had enough time. Vacations were wonderful. "You rib me for wanting to see Ronda and yet you're all geared up to enter another country?" He was smiling, though, grinning actually, and he poked her gently in the ribs when he spoke, a teasing gesture of accusation. He really didn't mind where they went. This was going to be fun. That was all he cared about—that Nell had a good time and that he did, too.
He'd been caught up in the introductions and had completely forgotten that Juanvi wouldn't know about his diet, so he chuckled when the older man announced that he was psychic. He thanked him in Spanish and took some of the cheese and bread, savouring it. He liked most foods as long as they were not meats and so any range of cheeses and breads tasted good to him. The salt of the olives provided a nice after taste. "I definitely want to see some of the art museums," he told her, having known this the moment he considered the idea of them going to Spain. He was thinking in particular about the Golden Triangle of Art, the three museums in close proximity that he'd heard about. He was alright with going anywhere, however, and he said this a moment later with, "I like all museums, though." He waved a hand with an easy smile. Historical museums were of course his favourites, being a History nut, but that was a given. He was okay with letting Nell decide where they could go first seeing as he was in a relaxed and compliant mood.

THIS WHOLE WORLD SPINS WITH HER FEET OFF THE GROUND SHE'LL MAKE THE STARS APPLAUD when she sits back down THERE'S A BULL'S BLOOD FOUNTAIN IN THE PIT OF A MOAN Nell found herself yearning for everywhere. It was kind of scary, the pull the world had on her. She supposed everyone wanted to slip away somewhere, for a day or a month or forever. But this trip was really just a gift, and she didn't have her own money to ride on. Money really opened up the world, spun it around, allowed you to see beyond the realms of wherever circumstance placed her. At Josh's teasing, she pointed the toothpick at him. "I don't even know Portuguese." Not like language barriers ever stopped anyone. It was similar enough to Spanish. "All I know is that their jellyfish are sons of mothers." She turned to look at Juanvi when he laughed and said, "I go there to fish, as a matter of fact." Nell lifted her head appraisingly. "There, we can go fishing...on shore." She corrected herself quickly, not explaining to Juanvi why she did so. He didn't seem to notice as he went on a story about catching a mako shark that almost bit his arm off. Looking at the beard and the serious eyes, listening as he spoke of marlin and swordfish, she couldn't stop herself before she blurted out, "You're the fisherman Santiago in the flesh." She coughed, but luckily he laughed. "Hopefully much better than him," he scoffed.
He went on telling his stories about the Spanish Civil War as she felt that every wizened old man should do. But his son didn't tell war stories to his grandchildren, he only talked about corpus delicti and LLP and what are the seven foundations of law? "We should take the metro to Las Ventas," she said to Josh, drumming her hands on the counter decisively. They could hit the museums afterward. Plus, she wanted to get out since she had a feeling Juanvi was determined to bulk them up with food, she saw it in his eyes. The metro was a short walk, and even shorter to the arena. Luckily tickets were still on sale--apparently they never sold out--and she bought some pipas to eat, even though her stomach should have been full from Juanvi. Normally, she have thought ahead to sneak in food as she usually did when going to movies and the like, but after the long flight, she felt like the contents of her head may have shifted as well. The arena almost looked like a sports field with its stadium seating, but she couldn't imagine what types of sports would be played there. She was at the ready with a camera, wanting to catch every moment she could. Just like in baseball, the dirt of the arena made her feel hotter than it probably was, even though the sun did a decent job at making the temperature similar to what she assumed the sixth circle would be.
Nell pointed up the box seat, comfortably tucked away in shade, and said, "Mayor Alberto Jiménez is going to be up there, probably with a portable air-conditioning and water ice.” There wasn’t any bitterness in her voice, though, just a tinkling of humor. She wasn’t the type of person to narrate everything that was going on during a spectacle, so she sat back as the paseillo entered and the ceremony began. The announcing of names drew cheers from certain crowds, fanclubs she guessed, and she pretended that she was a British expatriate, that she was Jake Barnes and that Josh was her Lady Brett, but decided that she wanted to watch it from the point of view of someone from her own culture. It was strange, thinking of it that way. Did she really belong to this country or was she one generation gone from any sort of experience that could remind her that she had roots in this place? “I’m rooting for Señor Shiny Tights,” she said, and in the same breath, she stood up and cupped her mouth with her hands to yell out, ”Go Señor Shiny Tights! Woo!” Nell sat back, laughing. ”I wonder if we could place bets. How about you, which is your favorite?” There were six bulls in the ring, three matadors, fifteen minutes for one of them to put down a bull. She knew how they did it, lanced through the aorta, a quick kill. If they hit the spine, or a shoulder, it could become messy and no one liked that.
