A beautiful June day. The air was still cool against bare skin and a gust of wind made you wish you wore a jacket, but it was not chilly enough to bundle up in heavier winter wear. The leaves were vibrant and green, the grass fresh and new, the flowers bursting with life. On the school grounds the flowers were always bright and healthy thanks to the Earth students who tended them, so even on the chilliest of winter days seeing a Day Lily in full bloom may not have been too surprising. The birds chirped somewhere in the distance among the trees, their songs tuneful and joyous. The academy gardens was a good place to be. Sprawled out in the grass was a curly haired boy, completely absorbing the suns rays like a human sponge. He took advantage of the wonderful weather and spent some of the early morning going on his daily jog, then spent a few hours working on his car at the shop. Greg decided to close the garage for the day, so Asher took advantage of the silence to work. He spent time on and off texting Morgan, who had been talking to quite a bit recently.
Exhaling slowly, eyes closed in contentment, Asher placed a hand under his head and watched the clouds lazily drift by overhead. He picked out shapes and animals, distracting himself from the nagging thoughts that erupted every once in a while. His phone vibrated in his pocket; the object of his thoughts sent him another text, and he couldn't help but smile. I've never smiled this much, and I smile a lot. Morgan was just a friend, but their bond was a lot stronger than most. They went through hell and back to create what they had. Asher would be damned if he let it go. He sat up a little bit and leaned back on his elbows to watch the other students wander by to and from the academy. Asher was not a people watcher by any means, but did not mind it if there was not much else going on. After a moment he pulled out his phone and sent another text and stuffed the phone back into his pocket. It felt nice to lounge about in the grass for a few hours before making the jog back to the shop. Greg would probably force him to put his shirt back on even though they weren't working; he was always focused on appearing business like.
The longer Asher sat there and drifted in and out of thought, the less of an urge he felt to get up and find something else to do. He was an active person by nature, but when the day was perfect for enjoying the sunshine even the most lively of people had an urge to stop moving and just enjoy what nature had to offer. He suddenly realized that his birthday was coming up--in July, he would be eighteen. Molly always teased him about 'becoming a man', and Adam always took a moment to sneer and walk off in a huff at the mention of it. Adam was incredibly independent for his age and felt he was more deserving of becoming eighteen than Asher was. The boy was always eager to argue or fight about something. Neither he nor Molly would be surprised if Adam took on the element of his father: fire. Just what we need. Another hot head who can wield a dangerous element. Not that other elements were not dangerous; Morgan proved that. But when you had a hot head like Adam anything was possible. Luckily the brothers had a strong relationship despite what Molly assumed.
Deciding to finally sit up and stretch himself out, Asher turned his head to the side to pop his neck. Opening his eyes he came to see a Daisy. A smile twitched on his lips as he leaned over and smelled the plant, enjoying the soft scent it emitted. It was one of his favorite flowers, despite the fact that he never really admitted to being much of a flower lover. Nature was one thing, but sniffing every daffodil and petunia might be pushing the envelope.

June days were not usually this mild, but Joshua was hardly complaining as he stepped out into the sunshine and paused for a moment to let it soak into his skin. He always felt invigorated during the summer months, powerful, like he could climb mountains or swim the ocean (provided he learned to swim in the first place). Though spring was his favourite month, summer made him feel the most alive. It was being a Fire elemental that did it, that he knew. Every elemental had their season, the one that made them feel the best as their powers stirred under their skin. Fire had the heat of summer, Wind the breezy autumn, Thunder the dry air of winter. Spring, the rainiest of the four seasons, was shared in its love by Water and Earth. There were seasons that really fucked over the elements, as well, and it was one of the reasons he hated winter so much. That and the fact that he just didn't like the cold, powers or no powers. In fact, he'd probably hate it more if he didn't have his natural warmth to fend off the bitter chill. There's none of that now, he thought, basking in the glow of the sunlight before continuing on down the path. There was a rough network of paths around the Academy grounds, all natural, where most of the students spent their time. He took a left at one of the forks and found himself heading toward the gardens. Why not?
As a gust of wind buffeted him, Joshua had the brief thought that it would probably have been cold to anyone else. The hell is it cold? It's summer. Canadian summers were just as warm as the summers everywhere else, a defeat of a stereotype that he didn't even understand to begin with. How is it, he thought, that we know about everywhere else, and yet they don't know a thing about us? It baffled him. He slipped through the arched trellis that marked the entrance to the Academy gardens, rimmed with rainbow-coloured roses that were natural rather than dyed. Earths showing off their talents, of course. Some might have considered it cocky and vain but Joshua appreciated the beauty that they could create, and it wasn't just because of who he had as a fiancée. He'd been raised by a mother whose secondary profession seemed to be a gardener. When she wasn't dealing with politics in the city and on the phone to her assistant about something or other, she was kneeling in the garden and tending to some plant or another. She'd have made a good Earth elemental, he thought, but knew that his mother's fierce temper and slightly manipulative personality had cancelled out that plan. A love of flowers did not make someone an Earth. It was personality that did it. Not everyone liked their element, but Joshua couldn't imagine being anything else but his own.
Most of the people he passed were Earth, and he offered them quiet greetings if they acknowledged his presence or glanced in their direction. He could easily destroy what they had built with just a flick of his wrist, yet he did not. There was something in one of his history books about a fire consuming the gardens and the student in question being expelled and later having their powers stripped when it was discovered someone perished in the blaze. That was likely why the Fires didn't bother. He just didn't see the point. It was a nice place, why ruin it? His musings stopped short when he spotted someone familiar, lips twitching into a smirk that was not entirely unfriendly despite the boy not looking in his direction. "What an incredibly manly activity," he remarked, calling attention to himself. He was only kidding. He may have sounded serious but he was not sneering and so there was a chance Asher might realise that he was just pulling his leg. Or perhaps not. It really was hard to tell with Josh. "Asher, right? What're you up to?" He paused, then added deviously, "Besides making me doubt my earlier opinions on your masculinity, that is." In reality, Josh didn't judge a guy by his muscles or his hobbies. It wasn't personality that made you a man, it was, quite frankly, whatever organs you happened to possess.

Off in his own world, Asher did not even take notice that anyone had entered the garden; his thoughts were a distraction enough, and with the poor boy's one-track mind it was difficult to focus on more than one thing at a time. His thoughts, or his surroundings? It was a bit difficult to choose which one was more important. It happened frequently, this one-track stream of focus; once Asher was set on something, it was hard for him to change course and do something else. He managed decently well with the balance between school and work, but even then there was a struggle. However, upon hearing a vaguely familiar voice Asher subconsciously switched his gaze from the flower towards the tall, dark haired fire student who smirked at him from above. Asher returned the smirk and leaned away from the flower, wrinkling his nose at the makings of a possible sneeze. "So incredibly manly," Asher agreed with a faint nod, still smiling as he ran a hand through his hair. "I wouldn't be concerned until I start wearing skirts and proclaim a love for the color pink, though. Then I would need an intervention."
Asher was a confident person; he was rarely ever embarrassed by much of anything, even being caught smelling flowers in the middle of the garden. He knew who he was, what he wasn't, and he was completely and totally comfortable with that. Morgan called him ugly, and although Asher's pride was stung he knew that was not the truth. Had it not been for his confidence, Asher may not even be friends with the wind girl. "Yeah, Asher. And you're Josh. Never forget the customer with the Lambo." And that was true. Asher would have had a difficult time forgetting someone with a stark white Lamborghini, let alone someone at Joshua's height. Although he had a difficult time spreading his focus on more than one thing, Asher was fairly decent with memorizing faces and names. It amused him when he called Morgan by her name and she came back at him with 'Angus'. Creative, but proof she couldn't remember who he was. He glanced around him and took a long look at all of the flowers before looking back up at Josh with a brief shrug. "Just enjoying my more manly activities. Flower sniffing, cloud watching, thinking of what I'm gonna put on my next quilt..." He emitted a rather amused chuckle at the thought of trying to make a quilt. Asher was far from feminine, despite the fact that his nose was previously engaged with a daisy.
"Actually I was just relaxing for a little while before I went back to the shop to work on my car. Greg decided it was too nice of a day to keep me locked away in the garage so...he closed early." Gregory knew how Asher could be; if set to one task he was determined to get it done, and did not mind missing out on a nice June afternoon to do it. Had he known Devin, the two were quite different in that aspect to be sure. Today was actually out of the ordinary for the wind student, being as you would normally find him out repelling down the cliffs or finding a waterfall to climb. He loved the thrill, loved being reckless. Life was too short to sit around tossing it away. With a lazy finger, Asher pointed in Joshua's general direction as he blinked at the sun which so perfectly blinded him from above. "What 'bout you? Hoping to sneak in here and smell the flowers?" Asher teased lightly, smiling up at him with only one eye open. It was the one day he decided to sit still that he forgot his sunglasses.

He snorted with mild amusement at the words but did not deliver an outright laugh. The Fire graduate certainly had a sense of humour and could appreciate when someone was being funny (or when they were only trying) but that didn't mean he'd express it in the most obvious of ways. Instead he settled for allowing the conversation to move in whatever direction it would, taking them to the formalities of 'how are you's and 'what are you up to's. He did not mind exchanging pleasantries; for the most part they were sincere if he bothered to ask them. Unless he wanted something from someone—and he wasn't the greatest at manipulating people—he did not try to flatter them by convincing them he had their best interests at heart. Josh either liked you or he didn't. Playing pretend wasn't his style. "She's certainly memorable," he mused on the subject of his car. "More so than I am, apparently." Once again, his humour was not direct nor accompanied by even a smile. Josh didn't have to smile to be content. He figured that grinning your ass off for the sake of doing so was a waste of time. If his lips twitched themselves into a grin because he was generally elated about something, so be it. If not? Well, then he was perfectly happy to leave it alone. His thoughts dissolved for a moment into a haze of quilts and wondering what joy anyone found in making them. They were nice to look at, sure, but he didn't think he could sit there for hours and craft one. Some of the Native American ones were really nice, he recalled—there'd been a stand selling them at the fair one year when he'd been poking around.
He must spend an awful lot of time at that shop, thought Joshua. Not that he blamed the Wind elemental. He was sure that he'd be excited to work in the hospital when it wasn't all about ferrying things from room to room and fetching water for the patients. Thanks to his experience in Biology as a third year college student and the fact that he'd taken courses in first aid, they sometimes let him help out with the minor cuts and scrapes when the place was overrun. He revelled in those times. Not because the person he was treating suffered, of course, but because he felt he was doing something useful by helping them. It made him feel good. He had not expected the strong compassion he felt toward the injured, always having expected himself to be one of the more distant doctors. It must have been in his genes. Maybe it was like that with Asher, too. Maybe the guy had it in his blood, that passion for auto-mobiles. "How's that going for you, by the way?" He'd seen the fixer-upper when he'd taken his own car to the shop for an oil change. Not his type, perhaps, but certainly a fine car. Or it would be when Asher was finished with it. He also wondered how long the Wind had been working on his future vehicle but refrained from asking so that he wouldn't be bombarding him with questions. Josh hated the feeling of being interrogated and so unless he was frantic or he knew someone well, he tried not to overload them. Tried. Sometimes he let his curiosity get the better of him.
Though they were unaware, the boys had a similarity in their determination to finish tasks. Joshua often got so intent on a project or novel that he would forget to eat until it was finished. It's a good thing I have someone like Nell around, he thought fondly of his fiancée. She didn't nag him and so he was absolutely fine with her concern over his eating habits. He'd be concerned, too, if she was skipping meals. Not like we haven't been there before. In order to avoid the death trap of his thoughts, Joshua answered the question. "Ha, no. Wanted to enjoy the weather, actually." His nose wrinkling slightly in distaste as he gestured around, he said, "Not that there's too much to enjoy. Chill in June? The weather does what it likes." Not that it could be considered all that strange any more, what with Global Warming having an affect on the planet and its weather-patterns. He wished it would act up and abolish the winter, turning it into a second summer rather than the other way around. He'd like that. "At least there isn't any snow," he concluded, looking on the bright side. He was not a total pessimist. Even Josh could see the finer points in life. "D'you work at the shop on school days, too?" he wondered. Josh had sometimes volunteered during the school week at the hospital but more often than not he reserved that time for studying. Two majors could be a bitch to handle, even for him.

Asher chuckled a little bit before sitting up, bringing one knee to his chest and resting his arm over it in a lazy manner. "It's no offense to you of course. It's my job to remember beauties like that. Although, your height is pretty memorable." He flashed a bit of a smile before blinking out the sun, growing rather frustrated that it was blinding him so badly from where he sat. Asher was good with names and faces, but he was not afraid to admit that he would have remembered the car above the owner. Joshua was tall and had distinguishing features that aided the boy's memory more than someone would of an average height and demeanor, but even so he had a one-track mind and had a bad habit of only focusing on one thing. Asher did take note of the scars on Josh's face, but assumed it was some sort of accident. He hated prying into people's lives so he refrained from bringing it up, even if it was one of the reasons (besides his incredible height) that Asher was able to recall who he was. That sounds so rude. But at least I'm not mentioning it. He would have hated someone to remember him for a mark he didn't gain willingly.
Ever the car fanatic, Asher never payed any mind to discussing vehicles; in fact, it was one of the few things he knew enough about to make decent conversation. He was social and friendly to a fault, but it never hurt to have a topic you could run with for hours on end and never get bored. Josh might not have been interested in an extended discussion but it helped to know the man was decently interested enough to ask questions and chat for a while. "It's going pretty well, actually," Asher nodded, ruffling his hair a bit. "I still haven't named her. I'm not sure what is suitable yet. Maybe once I get her out on the road I'll come up with something." If it were something like a child the boy might have come up with something before hand, but getting behind the wheel would be the best way to decide. He had quite a while to go before it was in running condition, but Asher had a strong drive to complete his work and would be damned if it was not done by the end of the year. Then he could drive around and have a little more freedom--even though Molly was rarely constricting with his schedule.
Adam often times tied him up at home in the mornings if he needed to get him off to school, but it was not a daily occurrence. Molly strove to get later shifts so Asher did not have to balance getting his brother off to school and making way to the Academy himself; it would be easier once Adam gained his powers and they could go to school together. If he gets his powers...and if I stay at home. That was still a good year away but Asher could not be patient enough. Adam needed an outlet. "It is pretty nice out isn't it? A good day to be active...even though I kinda found myself here." And, taking into consideration Joshua's response to the cool wind, smiled a bit. "Yeah, but it's still a good day. I'm probably gonna go rock climbing tomorrow after school so long as it doesn't rain." On days like these Asher took advantage of the cloudless sky and warmer weather, making an effort to go out and do some outdoor activities. It kept his energy channeled and kept his mind occupied. That was one of the main reasons he worked on cars so often; they were the perfect stress reliever for him. When Asher sat still for too long his mind wandered and that could potentially be dangerous to his mental health. "I do sometimes. It depends on homework load. Greg normally only lets me work on weekends though because he knows how I get when I start working on the cars."
If there were no distractions, Asher would lose himself in work and wound up losing track of time. There were a few times where he did not turn in an assignment or do reading simply because of work. Greg understood how Asher functioned so, being a fatherly figure, attempted to keep him focused on school during school and work on the weekends. "What about you? I know you said something about becoming a doctor...do you do any work at the hospital?" Asher knew not everyone worked with their profession right off the bat, but figured that maybe Joshua did. It never hurt to ask--then again, Asher had a bad habit of just spewing questions without taking much thought before hand. He was simply eager to socialize.
[Blame starky for the cooler June weather. XD She didn't change the forecast so...I just kinda ran with it. lolol]

He still did not quite understand but nevertheless accepted the habit of naming vehicles. He supposed it was akin to how the captains of a ship gave her a name. He also didn't understand why everything was female but didn't bother questioning that, either. Cars and boats seemed more androgynous to him but who was he to decide that kind of thing? "Ah, I have my fiancée to thank for Harper's name," he said. There had been a time when he'd never have mentioned Nell in conversation but the words slipped easily from his tongue now. It was not that he didn't love her—you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who cared for Nell more than he did—he merely valued his privacy and the right to keep his personal life... personal. However, he didn't mind Asher and thus didn't mind this disclosure. "Never knew they were meant to be named until she told me, actually." The Lamborghini wasn't a child or a pet. He'd been similarly confused when he'd realised that most people named their instruments. His guitars still remained nameless but his mother had told him in casual conversation that the grand piano upstairs that he sometimes put to use was called 'Tessitura', which was a foreign word that he only knew had something to do with music.
He arched his eyebrows when Asher mentioned activity, then chuckled when he corrected himself. "Was wondering where you were going with that." It was a pretty good day for getting up and running around, Joshua couldn't argue with that. It would probably fight off the chill for those that couldn't do it on their own, too. Of course, most people probably don't find it as unbearable as I do. It was his abhorrence of the winter and all things that came with it that made him so sour and unpleasant whenever it came to colder weather. It was practically a crime for the weather to dare be anything but perfect when he was outside! He didn't actually think this but he did hate it nonetheless. "Rock climbing, eh? You any good?" He'd done it a few times himself, though not on an actual rock-climbing wall. He'd instead tried to scale mountains as a kid. It had stopped when he'd slipped and lost his footing, giving his ankle a bad sprain and earning himself a long gash in his calf. That had discouraged him from trying again. Hiking the normal way worked for him. "I don't think rain was in the forecast," he said, frowning as he tried to remember what they'd said on the news that morning. He usually watched the news whenever he had the time. Television didn't really interest him but it was good to know the weather and what was going on in your city. "Then again, you never know. The weathermen aren't known for being accurate."
The idea of Asher being so focused on cars that he forgot his homework amused Joshua, lips twitching into a half-smile. He understood how that went. "Not like I haven't been there before." Oddly enough, it was the other way around for him—so focused on homework that he forgot about everything else. He didn't bother going into detail with this to Asher, though. The guy didn't need a run-down on his habits and Josh wasn't going to offer one. He nodded in reply to the question. "Sometimes. Only volunteer work, I don't really need the money. It's good for the medical school application." He figured that Asher knew what he meant by not needing the money. He drove an Aventador, it was pretty obvious to anyone who glimpsed the car that he wasn't desperate for cash. There had been a brief point in his life when his parents had kicked him out where he'd had Harper and very little cash to speak of but it was just that—brief. He tried not to think on it because it hadn't been his finest moment. He was over that now and everything was back to relative normalcy. "Unfortunately you need a degree for any sort of real work," he said. "So I don't do anything interesting." He shrugged, leaving that as it was.

Had Josh not taken the time to tell Asher that he was engaged, he may not have ever taken the time to inquire about the man's relationship status. It was not that he did not care, more that Asher preferred not to nose into the private lives of other people. He had a difficult time dealing with others who dug into his personal life, so he made an effort to avoid doing the same with his friends and acquaintances. Still, Asher smiled up at Josh with an approving nod. "Fiancee? Nice. Congratulations on the engagement." Asher felt inclined to ask who it was Josh was engaged to, but refrained. Maybe if they became friends he would feel more comfortable asking, but at that point in time there was not much of a reason to inquire further about his relationship. Fortunately for him Josh was a private person and did not crave the spot light on his private life, though Asher did not know that. "Really? Hm, well it's not like it's the end of the world or anything. The car still works with or without a name right?" Asher shrugged. It was strange Joshua would not know something like that, but who was he to judge?
When it came to being active, Asher was always moving about doing one thing or another. If it was not school related, it was working on cars or finding some place to do an activity outdoors. He assumed that his higher energy usage kept him level and cool headed, though he had to admit he was quite like his mother in many aspects. Even on his worst days though, Adam could make him look like an angel. His temper was intense. Asher tried to get his younger brother to go out on excursions with him and burn off some energy, but almost every time he gets shot down. Everyone needs an outlet. "Yeah, pretty decent actually. I like to hike waterfalls too, but there aren't as many of those around here that are hike worthy. What about you?" They were even more intense after a good rain when the water levels rose, but tomorrow rain would not be ideal for a generic rock climb. He figured the cliffs might be fun to try, but he was going to wait and see. "Good, I don't need any rain tomorrow. Maybe next week, but I really wanna go kayaking or something. We'll see what mother nature throws at us." Asher chuckled, pushing some of his curly locks away from his face. He considered cutting his hair short for a while, but was still on the fence.
Asher figured everyone had their days where focus was off-kilter. It shifted and altered with preference usually, which was what happened with the poor wind student on many occasions. He knew that he should be doing school work, but the minute he buried his head in the hood of the car he lost all track of time. It got to the point where Greg would force Asher to set an alarm on his phone so he could better plan his time in the afternoons. Molly admired Asher's drive to get things done, but wished he did not have such a strong one-track mind. "Volunteer work is always good for the resume...or a medical school application. Devoting your time without pay is always reputable." Asher replied, agreeing but looking a bit confused. Didn't need the money? Pay attention Ash. The man has a Lamborghini for his every day car. Blinking a few times, he brushed off the initial bewilderment and merely smiled instead. Had Asher been anyone else the next comment might have been taken rather offensively--a degree doesn't make a job reputable or disreputable. It was your experience and knowledge that he felt made you the most valuable. Unfortunately most employers did not care if you have experience so long as you have a degree, and some require you have it with a degree. It was confusing and stupid in his opinion, but didn't see any need to dwell on the matter. "So long as you're kept occupied I guess that's all that matters. You've got school and volunteer work, which is quite a bit."

Had Asher asked, Joshua might have disclosed Nell's identity, but there was also the possibility that he would have been vague about it. He was proud to let people know that he was engaged and that Nell was his special someone but he was not the type to tell just anyone about her. They had their private lives and he didn't know what, if anything, Asher knew about Nell. The Wind elemental did not inquire after her identity, however, and Joshua did not offer any further information. Instead he smiled. "Thanks." It was good to be congratulated on things like that. He chuckled at Asher's comment. "Indeed it does." Harper had worked fine before he'd named her and she worked just as brilliantly afterwards. The car didn't give him as many problems as some of the ones his friends owned, thank goodness, because Lamborghinis were both expensive to buy and expensive to fix. Though it might have been surprising to some that he was ignorant of many customs and superstitions, Joshua's full-logic approach to almost everything could explain it, if only slightly. He dealt with things that were serious most of the time and spared little thought for things like naming instruments and cars. Besides, his lack of a thriving social life in youth had inhibited him. He'd had a few close friends but not enough of a circle to really keep up with what most people considered common knowledge. His knowledge came from textbooks and documentaries for the most part.
Joshua lifted an eyebrow, for the idea of hiking anywhere near a waterfall sounded absolutely absurd to him. In fairness to the Wind elemental, it was Joshua's fear of drowning that stopped him from considering anything to do with deep or rushing water fun. He didn't like boats, he wouldn't go kayaking if you paid him, and he didn't even like to think about learning to swim. At least with a boat you weren't braving the hellish depths of the ocean (or lake, or river) yourself. Still, he digressed. It wasn't his hobby and so Asher could do whatever the hell he liked in his spare time. "Exactly how many sports are you involved in?" Joshua asked, his tone light and joking. He was active but he did not go for any extreme sports and, to be honest, he hated most sports in general. Tennis was the only love he had in the sporting department. He liked hiking, jogging, and spending time at the gym to keep himself in shape. Working out kept his muscles defined without requiring any real teamwork, something which appealed greatly to Josh. He was getting better with people now that his walls weren't as thick but that didn't mean he had changed completely. He would always have the anger and he would always have his pride, two things that made cooperation with a group of people sticky at best. "What'll you do if it does rain?" Joshua wondered, glancing curiously at him. Josh loved the rain and didn't usually let it halt his plans, but he could understand that not everyone was the same.
Though he caught the slightly confused look, Joshua did not understand it and so didn't know what to say in order to clear things up. Rather than asking, in case it was anything awkward, Joshua merely allowed the conversation to continue without interruption. The Wind elemental seemed to recover quickly anyway. Maybe he's thinking about something. Joshua often found his mind wandering if he was worrying or thinking about something else in conversation with someone and so he wouldn't hold it against anyone else. He nevertheless nodded his agreement to the words and twitched his lip when Asher continued. "Yeah, it definitely keeps me busy," he said. "Don't get me wrong, though, I like having something to do. Even if it does get a little tiring at times." He knew he'd be a lot more restless and irritable if he had nothing to do than what he did now. Joshua was a workaholic, thriving off of keeping himself occupied and engaged in something as often as possible. It didn't matter if that thing was studying, working, or bettering his relationships with friends or his fiancée, as long as he was not sitting around and staring into space. Laziness was something he really didn't understand. He didn't look down on others with less drive than he had, they merely baffled him.

The question was warranted, yet a bit random at the same time. The word sport to Asher usually brought him to entertain the thought of working with a team, holding practices and trying to win trophies. His extracurricular activities had nothing to do with team sports, although he did not mind a companion or two on his little excursions. He was a competitive guy by nature and did not mind a friendly bet every now and again, but knew for a fact that being in a team setting would probably not do well for him. If not for the fact that his competitiveness might overflow towards his own team mates, it would probably be the fact that he enjoyed more extreme sports outside of football, soccer, lacrosse or tennis. Either way Asher stuck to himself for the most part. He took a moment to dwell on the question, glancing up at the sky and scratching his stomach in thought. "Hmm...well I'll try just about anything once. It's kinda hard to keep count of my sport-like activities." He chuckled a bit, blinking at the sun once again. It really was incredibly bright from where he was sitting. "But if I had to put it into number form I would say at least ten." He included generic male sport choices too. Though they were not his favorite, he definitely would not turn down an impromptu game of football or Frisbee.
"If it does rain...then maybe I will go for a hike and get a hold of one of the waterfalls. If not, just going for a hike is good enough. Only after I get my schoolwork done though." Asher did well enough focusing while he was in class; it was after class that he struggled to pay attention to writing his papers and other random course work tossed his way. Not to mention he enjoyed spending time with Morgan, which was an even bigger distraction than his car. And that was saying something. A small smile crept up on his face as his phone vibrated again and he pulled out the phone, sending a reply and setting the device on the ground next to him. Lately the girl was always around, even when he knew he should be doing homework or helping Greg. Adam and Molly noticed, and although Greg surely figured it out he did not say anything on the matter. In passing, as though he were talking to himself, Asher randomly added, "I wish I could multi-task like Adam. That's one thing he can do that I'm envious of." He had not yet mentioned to Josh that he had a sibling; not that it was unimportant or not worth talking about, but more that Asher never found much reason to discuss his family. He loved them of course, but like Josh kept things to himself if it wasn't necessary to discuss.
Asher had to agree with Joshua on that point. Even when he was working at the garage--the place he loved to be--there were days when he just wanted to lay down and rest from working in the heat of the shop. Greg kept the air circulating with rather large floor fans, but they already discussed how it merely circulated the hot air as opposed to delivering a wave of cool air conditioning. Greg was a great guy but did not mind skimping out on certain luxuries to save a little money. Air conditioning was not really a luxury to Asher but it was not his auto shop to make that comment. "I like being busy too. Keeps my mind occupied." He tapped his head a little before sitting up even more. It distracted him from his thoughts and his past, which was important. Sighing, he grabbed the phone and stood up, straightening his shorts and snatching the t-shirt discarded on the ground nearby. "So what are you up to the rest of the day?" Asher asked cheerfully. He knew at some point he should get home and get his coursework done, but there was not much to be done for the day. I should at least do that first before going to work on the car. Slowly but surely he was learning how his focus worked.

Though he hadn't been expecting a serious answer to the question about sports, Joshua still listened with interest to the other's reply. He was not so rude that he would inquire about the life of another and then completely ignore their response. Besides, for a mere acquaintance Asher was one of the more interesting people Joshua had met. It was nice talking to him and he didn't have to worry obsessively over when the next personal question would throw him off his guard. Inquisitive people who did not understand the concept of privacy set him on edge and it was very hard for him to get along with their types. He was tolerant only to a certain point before he would ignore them outright. "Jesus. Tennis is the only thing I really play on a regular basis." He would very rarely humour his friends by kicking around a soccer ball with them but he was not good enough to play competitively in anything that involved a team. He only thought about himself and his own moves and completely excluded the idea of passing to someone else. He was used to his drive being his own—he hated anything that forced him to believe otherwise. Teamwork, team sports, just teams in general. The only exception was something that did not involve competition or schoolwork. He could easily cooperate with someone if they were trying to figure out how something worked, like a puzzle or an object to be assembled. Then he liked the cooperation.
Josh shook his head, though his expression was more entertained than anything else. "Rain and a waterfall? Do you just really like getting soaked, or what?" His tone was teasing, not really meant to be taken serious. As he loved the rain himself it was not difficult to grasp the concept of enjoying a hike during it. Now, if it had been snow they were talking about he would have been a lot more incredulous. I wonder what I could get up to tomorrow...? Then he remembered that he had a couple of papers assigned that very day and knew that he'd probably spend it inside and working on them unless Nell had plans for the pair of them. His fiancée was one of the only people for whom he would willingly sacrifice a couple hours of studying. He didn't need to work as hard as he did, after all. He could take little breaks here and there to cultivate his relationship and maintain his small but tight social circle. "Speaking of school work, that's where I'll be." He chuckled and didn't seem bothered by this at all. The papers were both for courses in his Biology major but that was alright with him. While he didn't enjoy it as much as he did History, he still liked the subjects enough to do well in them. Heck, he did well in subjects he didn't like, too. He didn't want anything to pull his grades down. Joshua knew that he could have aimed a lot higher than the Academy's college if he'd wanted to but he'd stuck to it because he knew that it wouldn't do good for him to be so far away from home, from his family.
The name was unfamiliar to him but he didn't ask, not wanting to cross any boundaries. Asher had shown enough respect for his personal life that he would extend the courtesy in kind. He glanced around the garden when the Wind elemental questioned him, shrugging. "I don't have any real plans. Nothing major to work on and I'm not scheduled to go into the hospital until later on in the week." It bothered him that he didn't have anything immediate with which to occupy his time. For the time being he was preoccupied with conversation, which was good, but what would he do after Asher left? He frowned in thought, then shook his head and directed his attention back to the other elemental. "What about you? Planning to spend the rest of the day here?" He remembered that Asher had said something about the shop closing early and guessed that meant the Wind would not be going into work. He's probably planning to scale Mount Everest, Joshua thought dryly, though there was humour in the musings. He wondered if Asher was one of those adrenaline junkies or whether he just liked to have fun. Whatever the case, Joshua would leave him to it. What a person decided to do in their own spare time was their choice, after all. A lot of people found his love of puzzles and problems confusing and downright boring.

Asher never expected anyone to hold as many sport-like interests as he did; in fact, Joshua's sole interest in tennis was rather normal and was not the least bit surprised. What could he say? Not only did he enjoy staying active, but the thrill of extreme sports only fueled said activity. Asher had his fair share of broken bones, bruises, cuts, and hospital visits, but they were merely minor bumps in the road to finding new and exciting excursions. The only thing he had not had a chance to do was hang gliding, but there was no where nearby to really enjoy it for what it was. New Zealand offered amazing cliffs, but that was for the distant future. Right now he was content with what lingered around the Hollow. Asher laughed and nodded a bit at Josh's question. "Well, after I found out I couldn't melt I just went all out," He joked, smiling. Morgan always claimed Asher was corny, but what did that matter? It made her smile, so obviously they weren't all bad. Maybe at first they pissed her off, but that was to be expected.
"You're gonna miss out on a possibly gorgeous day?" Asher asked, raising an eyebrow. Obviously he was merely poking fun at Joshua, but in reality Asher felt he should probably do the same thing. "Well, gotta keep those grades up for medical school though, so I guess that's a good reason." He had basic intelligence, knew how to study and get decent grades on his tests, but when Asher found a distraction it was hard to keep himself disciplined in his studies. Luckily he had Greg and Molly to breathe down his neck to keep him in line, so Asher was not floundering like a helpless fish. The boy allowed himself to lean back in a sort of half-assed stretch as his eyes scanned the gardens, enjoying what the earth students had to offer with their elemental powers. Surely Asher could enjoy the beauty of flowers without seeming too girly? Morgan might have thought different, but that's because she liked to mess with him. "Always good to have days with less of a busy schedule, hm? Even though we both seem to like to keep occupied." And boy did Asher strive to stay busy.
At Josh's inquiry, Asher merely rolled his shoulders in a bit of a shrug, his dark eyes stealing glances at the other students lingering on the grounds and near the garden. Some had books in their lap, either studying or reading for pleasure, while others tossed a Frisbee back and forth. A few of them seemed to be huddled in a group, possibly discussing a project for school. Whatever the reason everyone seemed to be occupied, so Asher felt maybe he should be doing the same. After all, what benefits would laying here in the grass smelling daisies have? "I actually don't know," Asher admitted, running a hand through his curly hair. "Might go work on the car, or go and clean house for mom before she gets off of work...something productive. Unless you're up for hanging out and doing something around here, I'm up for that too. Can't lay around sniffing flowers all day. People might get suspicious." He smirked, chuckling as he looked at the daisies again.

Josh gave an affirmative nod. "That's the plan." It wouldn't have mattered if it was pleasant and sunny or in the throes of a blizzard, he always put his studies before time out in the weather. Not that there were any blizzards in the summer, something that he would always be grateful for. He wouldn't put it past a graduated Water student to create a small one for the entertainment of friends but it would never be anything like mother nature could do herself. The elementals were powerful but the drain on their stamina stopped them from doing anything that could destroy the planet as spectacularly as she. "Do you plan on going to college?" he wondered curiously when Asher mentioned medical school. It seemed that the Wind elemental had good things already going for him at the shop and so he wondered if the Wind had any alternative plans. Maybe there's something that helps that kind of career. He knew the Academy had mechanical and metal-working classes but he did not know their extent nor if there was any major surrounding them. He had no interest in the courses himself and so had only heard of their existence through friends or when he was looking through the available options for his own benefit. He didn't suppose he was crossing any personal boundaries in asking Asher about his plans, seeing as it was a common question at the Academy. It was a school, so it was only natural that people discussed school-related things.
Doing chores for his parents, voluntarily or otherwise, had never been an issue for Joshua growing up. Sometimes he wondered what it was like to have grown up with that sort of responsibility as a part of one's daily life, seeing as he himself had been rescued from the need by the housing staff. They washed the dishes, tidied the rooms, pretty much did anything that needed doing. Joshua had been a little bit of a brat toward them when he was growing up in regards to their handling his possessions but he'd gotten better with it as he matured and simply requested that they leave certain things alone. Then he'd moved out and truly understood what it was like to do chores, though he'd been the home-owner (well, renter) and not a child being ordered around by their parents. He was a little surprised when Asher mentioned the possibility of hanging out, Josh not having considered it himself. He was not the type of person that often spontaneously arranged to hang out with acquaintances but today he supposed that it might actually be a good idea. Asher seemed to be relatively good company and he trusted him enough that he didn't feel uncomfortable. It was harder to make Joshua uneasy or set him on edge now. "Like I said, I don't really have anything planned. That sounds fine to me." He added a nod as well, for extra confirmation that he was up for hanging around a while.
Glancing around the garden as if it could give him ideas (it didn't) Joshua frowned and wondered what they could possibly get up to around the area. The Academy had a lot of prospective hot spots for fun and getting into trouble but he wasn't sure which one of them, if any, they could utilize to kill their boredom and keep them busy. He wondered if Asher had any ideas. He's probably going to suggest jumping off the cliffs, thought Josh. He likely wouldn't let up on the extreme sports jokes, even if they were internal, for a little while. Joshua was serious and stoic a lot of the time but he also had a sense of humour. The amount of jokes he kept to himself versus the ones he voiced could often be a semi-accurate judge of how much he got along with you. He didn't know Asher all that well yet and so he kept a lot of things to himself. That could change in the future. It all depended on the pair of them. "Should we stick around here or head to the Hollow? Staying around would save time but I'm not sure what we could do." The only thing he currently knew they had in common was a love of cars and hiking. "I'm fairly awful at most sports, so that's out," he added, just to clarify. He hated sports. Aside from tennis, of course. Hiking coming to mind again, he shrugged and suggested, "We could always check out some of the disused trails out in the mountains. No one goes up there any more; might find something interesting." Smirking, he added, "Maybe even one of your waterfalls."
[My apologies if I didn't give you much to work with xD]

College. For a while now the word hardly ever crossed Asher's mind. It was not that he neglected the fact that it was fast approaching nor the fact that it existed, more that Asher had things he wanted to focus on now. A one-track mind was a powerful yet hindering thing. It had its ups, but definitely the downs. College flitted past his subconscious a few times, and attempted to search for possible schools to attend should he decide to leave the hollow to complete his education, but the drive was fleeting. Work would come up and he would turn to cars, and then school was happening five days a week, not to mention homework. However, his lack of focus on finding a place to go (or whether he should stay) did not deter him from wanting to continue his education. "Yeah I will be. Not sure what I will major in but I have plenty of time to decide." What with basic college courses taking up at least the first year or so Asher was not all too worried about finding a major currently. He did have a feeling he would be staying in the Hollow and finishing school at the Academy college, because leaving Morgan was not much of an option.
Aside from Morgan, Joshua was the closest thing he had to a friend. He had a few acquaintances that he spent time with and played sports on occasion but he never really sat around and made good conversation with any of them. He liked Josh's sense of humor and his knack for not nosing into people's lives. Not that Asher would not talk of his mom or brother on occasion or discuss random events at work with Greg, but beyond that he liked to keep up a line of 'do not cross' tape. Many people that tried to push too far were pushed away, and more often than not Asher avoided them for a long time after that. Morgan was slowly becoming the only exception, but even Morgan did not know of his past yet. It was embarrassing to know what his father had done. A bright smile flashed across Asher's face. "Excellent!" He exclaimed, clasping his hands together. Now, to think of something to do. The boy scanned the grounds at Joshua's suggestion of possibly sticking around the school, and shrugged. "Not much to do around here, unfortunately." Asher nodded at the sports comment, understanding. "That's fine, there's plenty of other non-sport activities we can do."
Asher had not yet found anyone willing to do much with him aside from sporadic sports on the grounds. He normally hiked by himself, climbed by himself, did a lot of things alone. It was nice to know that even if Joshua did not spend much time hanging out after today, he had some company for once. "That sounds like an awesome idea," Asher agreed, sliding his shirt back on as a few girls passed by. They glanced at Josh and Asher with tiny smiles and waves before disappearing again, the curly haired elemental shaking his head. He didn't realize how focused he was on the wind girl who so ardently tried to hate him. "I knew I liked you for a reason, besides the fact you have an affinity for cars." Running a hand through his hair lightly, Asher cast his gaze around them again, sticking his hands into his pockets. "Are we walking there? Or are you driving? Because either way is fine with me." He was used to walking just about everywhere, so whether by car or by foot their excursion lay in wait for them and he was excited to finally have a companion.

Joshua had decided when he was eight years old that he wanted to be a doctor, 'just like Dad'. He had always been very sure of what he wanted in life even when he hadn't been as confident in himself and his abilities. He'd known he would go to college and then medical school and he'd entertained fantasies of being a doctor and working side by side with Donovan. His desires had matured when he grew older but their core had always stayed the same. He'd never really had the doubt or uncertainty that some people did. He nevertheless agreed that two years was plenty of time to decide on a major and nodded to Asher's words. "I got stuck between two," he admitted with a chuckle. "Ended up with both of them." He had taken a double major so that his passions didn't conflict with his desires for the future. It was difficult to love a career and love a subject that had fuck all to do with it at the same time. He doubted he could combine his passions for History and Biology so he was instead content to continue History classes whilst taking Biology to fit in all of the courses he needed for pre-med. It was amazing to think of how many majors the Academy actually offered. They also had majors that focused solely on the elements for the students who did not desire a post-secondary education but wanted to further their powers as best as they could. All majors included some elemental courses (it was mandatory if you attended the Academy college) but those special majors took it to new heights.
He was admittedly relieved when Asher easily waved away the idea of sports, having harboured a private concern that the Wind might try to talk him into something. Not that it would have been possible—Josh was very firm in his desires and dislikes. It might have been different in youth when he'd been willing to do almost anything to impress his group of friends but not now. The hiking trip seemed like a look plan for both of them and he grinned at the thought. It wasn't often he went hiking with other people nowadays. He'd hiked a lot with his family when he was younger and had taken an interest in it himself when he got into high school but his trips where someone actually accompanied him were rare. He remembered a hiking trip with Nell that he looked upon fondly, however, messing around with her camera and staying the night in a makeshift camp. Asher would be much different company as they were not romantically involved but he still thought that it could be fun. "Walking? That would take hours," he pointed out. "It'd be dark by the time we got there." Maple Hollow was a good ten minutes away by car and a lot longer on foot, and that was just the town itself. You had to go farther out to reach the good hiking trails and the abandoned ones were harder to spot. "I can drive," he said, nodding. "Harper can't go off the road, of course, but I don't mind a bit of a walk to the trails." He usually parked his car in a certain spot and then hiked up into the network of trails and pathways.
He unlocked and raised the doors before they'd even reached the car using the automatic key and fiddled with the controls on the cockpit once he'd got inside. He could feel the air-conditioning kick in and turned it down thanks to the cool day, then pulled out of the parking lot and hit the road. They had quite a drive until the trails and even though he could have made brilliant time if he went over the speed limit, Josh was always very careful to obey the traffic laws. He liked his sports car because it was beautiful and fast but he did not like the idea of it being taken away from him for breaking the law. He'd already had a bit of a run-in once when he'd panicked and tried to outdrive the police. Never again, he promised himself. "You know," said Joshua conversationally, keeping his eyes on the road despite the fact that it was fairly empty, with only a few cars passing every now and then, "I was going to ask if you wanted me to turn on the radio and I just realised I haven't got a clue what sort of music you listen to." He chanced a brief look at his acquaintance in order to flash him a grin and then refocused his attention on driving. "So what sort of stuff are you into?" Joshua had a load of music on his iPod, as well, which was currently plugged into its interface, but he was not sure that they enjoyed the same things.

"Double major, huh?" Asher inquired, raising an eyebrow with a smile. He had to admire Joshua's perseverance and determination with school, and could only hope that he did well in his classes this year and the year after, only to graduate and start up with college. Sure he was undecided on his major, but it was not the end of the world. Asher was the type to take things in stride and not think so heavily on something that he becomes stressed out. That was fruitless and ended in disaster. "Well, good luck with that." Of course the boy was insanely interested in cars; fixing them, building them, admiring them, anything dealing with the four wheeled beasts of the road. They all intrigued him, and loved the purr of an engine and loved it more when he was the one to bring it to life. He was not so sure what the academy college had to offer in terms of shop classes or if they even had a degree for mechanics, but even if not Asher was not so sure about leaving the Hollow any time soon. Unbeknownst to the wind, he had become quite attached to Morgan and felt that leaving her here while he went away to college was wrong. A surge of protection washed over Asher and he could not ignore it.
Shaking out his hair, Asher looked a bit embarrassed. He spent most of his days walking from place to place unless he managed to borrow the car from Molly or Greg, but that was not often. Asher clocked his walks to the academy from the house, to the shop, and just about everywhere he wanted to go. The trails were not a place he frequented, so had no concept of the distance. "Yeah, I walk around a lot so it was kind-of a habit to offer that up as our mode of transportation." He chuckled, then looked up at Joshua with a bit of child-like anticipation. "Sweet. I get to ride shotgun in the Lambo." It was almost said in a sing-song voice as he followed Joshua to the car, watching in awe as the doors rose up to let them inside. Asher was envious, but it was fleeting. The foreign cars were beautiful things to behold, but his preference lay with American muscle. Always was, always will be. However Asher could not help but look around at the interior of the car and admire the handiwork, smiling in approval as they backed out of the parking lot and towards the trails.
Exhaling a bit in sheer contentment, Asher rolled his head back onto the headrest of the seat and watched as the trees and buildings breezed by the window; it was amazing how free a car could make you feel. A good warm breeze, a bright cloudless day, and nothing but your tires and the road. It was a beautiful thing. Too bad his car was not up and running yet--speaking of which, the beast still had yet to be named. A few names crossed his mind, but none of which truly caught his attention or stuck for longer than five minutes. One would reach out to him eventually. Joshua's voice broke his thoughts and the brunette turned his head to look at the fire elemental. "Ah, I'm not really all that picky actually. I usually listen to whatever the driver listens to, and I'm content." Which was true. He did have a bit of a love for older rock music but just about any music was enough to entertain him for a while. "What about you? You should show off your music library a little bit. Surprise me." Asher was content with just being in the presence of someone who not only held good conversation but had some interests in common. He was willing to go hiking with the adrenaline junkie, so that was enough of a reason to admire him in the first place.
