[Figured the detention hall would work quite well since it forces them together.]
"Have a seat, Mr. Dale."
Joshua's gray eyes met those of the headmaster as he lingered in the door of the office, expression mistrustful. He'd been sent up here a few times before and none of them had been very pleasant, so he had a vague idea of what to expect. Being called 'Mr. Dale' had taken a while to adjust to when his professors were scolding him—his father was Mr. Dale (or Dr. Dale, respectively), he was just 'Joshua'. Son of the rich doctor and his politician wife, no one yet important enough to be addressed formally. He'd grown used to it now, of course, but in a bad way. Being called 'Dale' usually meant that he was in trouble. He sat down slowly but said nothing. He was well aware of why he was here and the man across from him did not inquire. "You've gotten yourself into quite a bit of trouble this year," said the man in disapproval. Josh waited, but he did not continue. "Yeah," he agreed, uncomfortable. He didn't like feeling like a scolded child. I'm almost twenty, I'm not five.
"As you are responsible for yourself now, gone are the days when I could frighten you with a call home to your parents." Joshua could remember those days quite well. His father had always been infuriated to hear that Josh was causing problems and starting fights at the Academy, it had been frightening to consider the deep water he'd be in when he returned home. It was usually not enough to reign in his temper but it was enough to scare him, surely. "However, as you are no longer in high school, it is within my authority to expel you." The words seemed to resonate and Josh's stomach seemed to drop. Thoughts of an incomplete degree barring him from medical school flashed through his mind and he tensed. The headmaster seemed to realise he'd made a point, for he fixed him with a severe look. "Your intelligence is not the question," he said. "Your professors speak highly of you, Joshua, it is your attitude I have a problem with." The graduate had no idea how to reply to this. He wished he could get through a school year without endangering his place at the Academy at least once but his foul temperament agreed to differ. As he was also very aware of how close he was cutting it, he offered no excuse.
The man behind the desk sighed. "I'll let you off with a warning," he said. "You'll still need to do the detention that your professor assigned. Don't let me see you in my office again." Joshua was glad to be rid of the critical stare of the man as he left the office, releasing a breath he'd been unaware he was holding. Just two more years, he tried to coach himself. Two more years. Don't fuck this up. He was tense and ansty as he made his way to the detention hall, noting that the supervisor was not in yet. Normally he'd have taken his chances and skipped the detention altogether but he knew that he'd need to keep a clean record for the next little while before they started letting him away with the little things. Damn it, there were some times when he really hated his anger. He sat down at one of the empty desks and pulled a book of crossword puzzles from his bag. They were the Challenger's Edition and so would take a while, at least. He had another two hours before he'd be allowed free (maybe more, if the supervisor didn't believe how long he'd been in when she entered) and he wanted the time to pass quickly than it would just sitting there.

Ashley angrily stormed down the hall. This was her proof that they really did care around here. Ash had gone almost 2 months breaking all the rules and not getting caught but she made a mistake by leaving the dorms with the bottle of beer still in her hand. She was to waisted to know what she was doing. Luckily it was her first offense and the teachers blamed it on bad influences from the other fires. The teachers, of course, were not aware of Ashley's issues with alcohol so of course on her way to detention she was buzzed, gum in mouth and no bottle in hand. She had drank just enough to get her through this painlessly. Her plan was to just sit there and enjoy the buzz, maybe have a nap if the teacher stayed away long enough. All this was crushed however, the moment she walked into the room.
"Shit not you again" Ashley said slightly louder then was necessary. She over dramatically rolled her eyes and flopped down in the desk directly beside him. I'll poke him in the check the whole time! Ash thought. This is fool proof! The downside to this however was there was something really amusing about something that was keeping her occupied for a few moments. "So what are you in for" she asked him, speech was slurred but appropriate volume this time. "I got caught for drinking" She said making quotation marks with her fingers around the word drinking. It was around then Ash realized she may have had one too many beers before coming down. She giggled about it then put her head down waiting for the still nameless man's response.

Joshua was concentrating rather intently on the crossword puzzle, frowning at the little empty boxes. He did not notice anyone approaching the door and likely wouldn't have looked up even if he had. The supervisors generally didn't stop you from doing things like this, as long as you weren't disrupting anyone or playing with electronics like a phone or a laptop. 23 down, he thought to himself, repeating it over and over in his head as if it could help him with the clue. An eight letter word for—what the hell? Surprise intercepted his concentration and caused him to look up as someone rather loudly announced their presence. The graduate recognised the girl but in his shock it took him a couple of seconds to process the situation. Setting the pen down delicately, he frowned. "Me again," he said in an almost bored tone. "Why don't you yell a little louder? Perhaps there were a few folk that didn't hear you." He was a little irritated because he was stuck here for two hours and she'd broke his train of thought but he was not yet in the snapping, snarling rage that had possessed him during their first encounter. Maybe she'd know better than to rile him up as much this time.
Or... perhaps not, seeing as she was a bit tipsy. He was not entirely sure what to make of this situation. It was almost funny, actually, though he didn't laugh. He merely gazed at Ashley with an expression of mingled interest and exasperation. "I'm not surprised, seeing as you're drunk," Josh commented. "Are you even old enough to be drinking? Not that I care." He didn't give a shit about her and wouldn't have batted a lash even if he did. Josh had drank since he was ten years old, on and off. He was not an alcoholic and not even that much of a hardcore partier any more but he still indulged on occasion. It was nice to go and have a beer at the fancy Blackjack now that he was old enough legally to hang around that crowd. It had often made him uncomfortable when Nell was on shift and she could take notice of how intoxicated he was but there was no longer any risk of that. Still, he made a point to watch his consumption carefully. He didn't like the idea of turning the same sort of nasty he had on the first night he'd met his girlfriend. He didn't want Nell to be the recipient of such negative attention again.
Not even sure why he was bothering to give Ashley the time of day, Joshua nevertheless replied, "I got into a fight." It wasn't really surprising. He'd gotten into trouble and sent to detention for fighting this very girl in front of him before. Sometimes he loathed his temper and all of the problems it caused. He was not exactly what you could call ashamed of his actions, he never regretted decking someone that rubbed him the wrong way, he just hated being punished for it. There had to be consequences for negative actions though, he supposed. He got bitter toward the professors sometimes but at the end of the day they were just doing their jobs. "Why the hell were you drinking on school property? Legal age or not, that's pretty stupid." It might have been a harsh word to use but they were not friends and so he did not watch what he was saying. Besides, his getting into fights hadn't been the smartest decision, either. He supposed the 'smart' people were the ones that stayed out of the detention hall. I could never be that kind of smart. Too many assholes hanging around. He was very intelligent when it came to books and education but his temper hindered other things quite a lot.

Ash let out a smirk when she sensed irritation in his voice. She had even considered yelling her words again but figured it was best not to, the last thing she needed was teachers breathing down her neck. It was a little concerning for Ashley that Josh could tell that she had been drinking. She had only been in the room a few seconds and he could already tell, that means anyone could if they stuck around long enough. She didn't mind though as long as no one told on her, she needed the buzz and she couldn't even imagine how she would manage if her booze was taken from her. Instead of acknowledging the fact that Josh had spoken by answering his question she came up with one of her own. "You know buddy, I still don't know your name." This actually bothered Ash, she didn't like the idea of not knowing something so important about a person. A name was an identity so for her having a face with no name was unbelievably frustrating. "So are you going to tell me or stay the handsome, mysterious man who keeps finding me?" She tried to hold back her laughter. Although he was attractive, her intention was to piss him off enough so he would give in and tell her his name. It would also be nice to get a reaction out of him, maybe even get him in some trouble. It would be worth another burn.
Ashley sat interested at his reason "ohhhhhhh" She sang encouraging him for more details. She wanted to know who it was with and over what. That way she knew who to applaud when she got out of this dreaded room. Ashley couldn't picture Josh having many friends being a traitor and all. The fires didn't accept him and what were the odds the earths and waters weren't suspicious of him? She also wondered why he was a traitor, considering she wasn't aware that he was in a relationship with an earth. It made little sense to her how someone could turn their back on such a great force like the fires. The man's question was actually an intelligent one worth an answer in her mind. "I couldn't help it. The booze was there and I needed it. The issue wasn't that I was drinking on school property, the problem was that I got way too shitfaced to know what I was doing. I ended up wondering the halls cause the bitches I was drinking with in the dorms passed out." telling her tale of stupidity humiliated her and made her regret sharing. She knew he wouldn't care but figured that maybe if he said something sarcastic she could use to to make fun of him. Ashley was immature on her own, if you add enough booze she went looking for trouble in the worst ways.

Joshua did not feel nearly as enraged as he had when they had first became 'acquainted'—despite neither knowing the other's name—and so he merely scoffed his amusement at her words. It was likely due to the fact she was drunk that he was not phased, not that he would have been particularly irked by her commentary if he was sober. Drunk people were fun to mess with at times but they were hardly to be taken seriously when you were sober and they unarmed. Josh was a force to be reckoned with toward himself and others when he indulged in the alcohol because he carried a switchblade in the front pocket of his jeans and, as Nell had found out, had no problems with waving it around and making threats if you pissed him off. "This handsome and mysterious man has a girlfriend," he replied, arching an eyebrow at her. He was mostly fucking around because he figured she wasn't actually interested him, just trolling. He had nothing better to do and so he figured he might as well commit to the back and forth. "Besides, I don't know your name either." He shrugged, suggesting that he really didn't care what her name was. He did not expect for her to tell him and certainly didn't plan on giving out his own name. That would be giving in to her—he was too stubborn for that.
He stared at her for a long moment as she expressed her interest in his tale, considering whether or not to disclose further information. Oh, what the hell? This was decidedly less boring than sitting and waiting for the supervisor to get back. He might have had more fun trying to solve his crossword puzzle but he doubted that the girl would pay him the courtesy of shutting up and letting him concentrate. Even if they had gotten along better, she was drunk. "Idiot thought it would be a good idea to chuck ice at me," he said. "I told him to cut it out, he didn't, so I punched him in the face and jabbed him in the gut." Joshua was not exactly one for flashy fighting techniques. If he could have his opponent down in a couple of brief hits then he'd take them and walk off. The lack of fighting back from his Fire foe had been the reason he was sent off to the headmaster's office without a second thought. If the younger boy had thrown some punches too, they may well have both been sent to detention and Josh would have been allowed to slide under the radar again. No such luck. "It's his own fault for starting shit." Josh would stick by that. He could never bring himself to regret the fights he got into. He regretted their consequences, but his pride and occasional arrogance convinced him that the wounds of his opponents were deserved.
Ashley told her own tale next and he listened with an expression of exasperated bemusement. Drunks. Even though Josh had done a lot of stupid things when he was younger, he'd always tried his best not to mix drinking with education. Mostly because he valued the latter but also because he'd feared that dreaded call home to his parents. His illegal drinking had usually been on weekends at parties but he would reluctantly power through a hangover if he caved in on a weekday. "I think you just proved my point," he said, shaking his head. She was almost funny when he couldn't take her seriously. He'd probably be at her throat if she was sober but there was something about the inebriated that amused him. "If you didn't get 'shit-faced' on school property, you wouldn't be in this predicament." It made perfect sense to him but he supposed it might be different for her. It was hard to imagine the thought process of a drunk unless you too were intoxicated.

Ashley was glad that josh was playing along. The next few hours would be more enjoyable for at least her if they were talking. Ash was a little shocked to hear that he had a girlfriend, she wondered if this was why he was a traitor. It made perfect sense in her head so she assumed the girl wasn't fire. Ash ran her finger under her eye and down her cheek as if it were a tear. "Well then she is a lucky girl. You must really care about her if if your willing to live as a traitor. Hey does that make her one too?" It made little sense to Ashley and her drunken thoughts how the earths and waters accepted him when he was with a traitor who was a traitor because of him. Ashley's head started to hurt and her words slurred more because of it. "So if I tell you my name, will you tell me yours?" She asked in all honesty. She really didn't care if he knew her name or not as long as she knew his.
Ash again was glad that he was talking when he began to tell his story. Although it was probably from the booze she found herself absolutely fascinated with his story and him in general. She wondered if his girlfriend liked the fact that he fought. Some girls would think it's hot, others not so much. It would be interesting to find out seeing how often he did get in fights, at least from what she knew. She decided against asking though, she didn't want to risk looking like a creeper. She was perfectly happy being a troll. Ash nodded when Josh blamed the other boy for the fight. It was probably true, Josh seemed like the type for self defense and not attacking for fun. When he had attacked her in the mess hall, he had probably come up with some way to blame that on her as well. Of course in Ashley's mind all she had done was bump him. It hardly seemed like a big deal.
Ash ignored the mans comments about her drinking. She didn't like talking about personal things and was not about to tell him that she was seriously addicted to the stuff. She needed to change the subject before her brain made her say something she didn't want to say. Not that he really cared about her life but she was still uncomfortable. Thinking quick she grabbed the crossword off his desk and took a look at it. The clues were too hard for a sober Ashley let alone a drunk one so instead she drew a tick tack toe board on the coroner of the page and passed it back. "Wanna play?"

He considered what she was saying for a moment, bemused. He really wasn't sure what to make of Ashley and her current state. She was clearly drunk and so he chalked most of her behaviour up to tipsiness but he wondered how much of this was actually coming from a point of sensibility. Probably not much, he concluded to himself. He knew from experience that his intelligence tended to be rather compromised once he'd downed enough whiskey. Beer didn't work for him, he couldn't bring himself to consume enough of it to get drunk. This usually required downing glass after glass without stopping and he'd be slightly buzzed and vomiting buckets before he was smashed enough to enjoy himself. He didn't have that problem with whiskey. Thank god it didn't make him as mean as it made some people. He was mean to begin with and so perhaps the liquor counteracted this. He was a fun drunk. "No, why would that make her a traitor?" Then he rolled his eyes a little. "Wait, you're drunk. Never mind." He figured that Ashley's own train of thought made a lot more sense to her than it would to him. Nell's not the traitor, I am. He was comfortable with this, he thought. He'd had a long enough time to accept the fact that his alliance couldn't stand him.
For the sake of being a troll and seeing how much he could confuse Ashley by explaining the little things, Josh decided to describe a bit of the politics. He knew that she was fairly new to the school even now, even though she'd been around for a few months into the new year. She might not have been a ninth grader but he figured she knew about as much as they did. Transfer students didn't often get as much of a rundown—Nell had been an example of that, though she hadn't started at the Academy until she was in her final year of high school. It was how they'd gotten better acquainted, really. He'd committed himself to helping her out. "I betrayed my alliance, not the other way around," he said. "Politics aren't always double-edged. I'm with the other side now. She's always been on it. Why would she be a traitor?" He didn't tell Ashley anything about him and Nell beyond the vaguest of things. He kept his life pretty private. Most of his friends knew he had a girlfriend and if they asked for her name he'd give it but Ashley was not a friend. He would not disclose his personal information.
This included his name and he chuckled as she asked again. "Probably not. I wouldn't be surprised if you forgot it by tomorrow anyway." It was a subtle but not exactly cruel-hearted jab at her intoxication. Josh didn't get a rise out of bullying other people but he also didn't shelter his words and comments. He didn't bother filtering himself for the sake of a person's feelings. Well, unless it was Nell or a close friend of his. His reaction when she snatched his book of crosswords was immediate—anger flashed in his gray eyes and his relaxed posture immediately tensed. "Oi!" he warned, tone dangerous. She handed it back to him soon enough and he blinked at her as if he couldn't believe her nerve. What the hell am I going to do with you? Then again, it wasn't like he had anything better to do. "I'm surprised you can hold a pen straight," he said a little sharply, but he still took his own and wrote a neat 'X' in the centre square.

Ash was going to answer Josh's question on how it would make his girlfriend a traitor but luckily before she said anything else he explained. Ash sat there and tried to process the information for a little too long. She wouldn't have been surprised if he was wondering what was wrong with her. Eventually she figured it out. "Ohhh, I think I get it. What I don't understand is why they still like her? Why your the traitor and not her. Is it just because of how vicious the fires are? Would we ever accept an outsider or will we always be the ones called traitor?" Ash thought about her parents who both would have come to the school. She wondered if one of them had been through what Josh had. She tried to push it out of her mind though seeing as anything involving her mother was never a good thing.
Ashley laughed and turned in her chair so she was now facing him. "Well if you're so sure I'll forget it then why not just tell me? Or would you prefer to stay mysterious handsome man?" Ask asked only half teasing. She would honestly continue to call him that is she didn't get his name, assuming she remembered this conversation at all. Normally her memory was pretty much intact after a night of drinking but occasionally small details would slip her mind and with her luck, this would probably be one of them.
Ash burst out laughing at his reaction to her taking his book. The atmosphere in the room, for her at least, had calmed down quite a bit. She couldn't help but wonder if he would have given her the time of day if she had been sober. She assumed not and was glad that she was drunk realizing how horrid this would be otherwise. She laughed again at his comment "Honestly, So am I" She let out a sincere smile to herself and wrote an '0' in the top left spot. "You know it's almost always a cats game when the center square is taken right?" She rolled her eyes and passed back the puzzle book.

Joshua was amused by her attempts to piece together and make sense of his situation with Nell. He usually wouldn't utter a word about it but it was rather funny discussing it with someone who was a bit tipsy. Besides, he was bored. Even if she'd been sober she might have gotten a couple words out of him, though they'd have been a lot less pleasant ones. Joshua suffered from ennui just like the next person. He could usually find some way to occupy himself (like his crossword puzzles, for example, or some form of studying) but it was a lot harder when you were essentially trapped in a classroom for the next two hours with a drunk girl who seemed intent on conversation. "I wasn't dating her when I betrayed the alliance, that's why," he said quite honestly. One of the reasons he was more comfortable with discussing the bare basics of his relationship was that they could be found out through the grapevine by those who really wanted to know. Anyone concerned with him or the subject of the first war of last year could have told Ashley that he and Nell hadn't gotten together until a while after the war's conclusion and so keeping such information from her was a bit pointless. As was concealing his name, but that was more for the hell of it and to pull her leg. "You know, you're awfully philosophical for a drunk person." He smirked at the thought, joking again. He hardly ever laughed or smiled when he joked with people he wasn't friends with and so it could sometimes be difficult to tell whether he was really kidding at all.
Nevertheless, inebriated as she was he still considered her questions and ponderings for a moment. He had led the Fire element and been an integral part of it for a time and so despite his current treachery was well aware of how they operated. "I don't know if they'd ever accept an outsider," he said at last, shrugging. "They might, I suppose. Not that most Earth or Waters would want to join their ranks." He suppressed a sigh at the thought, embittered by the fact that it was he that had to give up his friends and endanger his rank in the alliance. He was not bitter toward Nell for she had not asked him to do anything, more toward his situation. He'd accepted it as a necessity and was mostly unbothered by the insults of the other side but sometimes he felt ostracised in his new community. They were not like him. They didn't understand his bouts of violence or his explosive rage like the Fires had, didn't have that fierce loyalty toward him like his own kind once did. Alright, so maybe he missed them sometimes. He'd grown up in a family of proud Fires and it felt weird to have shifted from that.
He smirked at Ashley. "I think I like the mystery," he said in a conspiratorial tone. In reality he just liked messing with her. He did not really care who won or lost the game nor if they tied and so her next information barely phased him. "If it is, it is. If it isn't, it isn't." After expressing his opinion, he once more penned a neat little 'X', this time in the bottom left corner, two spots below where Ashley had stuck her O. "Your go," he said unnecessarily.

Ashley couldn't hold back her romantic sounding sigh when he said what he did. She actually had a bit of respect for him after finding this out. She would never have the courage to drop her alliance like that for love. She cared way too much about others opinion of her. She listened to him and his big word that she could hardly remember what it meant "I'll take that as a complement." she said winking at him. "I have tons of experience having to actually think when I'm drunk. Kids don't magically decide to behave just because you decide to have a beer or two." Ash did know that he was joking, at least the though he was but she still liked to believe that she had at least some control when she was buzzed.
Ash got a bad feeling in the pit of her stomach when mystery man said that the fires probably wouldn't accept outsiders. It made her nervous not only for her parents but for herself. Any small slip could mean trouble. God forbid you were seen or spoke to the wrong person, Ash made a mental note to be careful.
Ash looked him right in the eye when he said he wanted the mystery "Alright it's up to you" Ash started thinking of things to call him since 'handsome mystery man' was too long and 'mystery' sounded a little like what you would name a pony or unicorn. Ash put it out of her mind to make her move. She looked at him again right in the eyes to show he did care who one. Sure it was just a game but ties just sucked. She placed the '0' in the top right coroner stopping his win.

He blinked in mild confusion as she sighed, not realising that she found what he had done admirable in any way. He thought about asking but decided against it seeing as it could have just been a heavy expulsion of air from her lungs that he interpreted to have more meaning than it did. Not everyone sighed because they were wistful or sad and besides, what would she be sad about? She was drunk! Of course, Josh knew there was still a strong possibility of feeling blue when you were intoxicated, it all depended on what you drank and how much of it. He always tried for whiskey no matter what he was doing but he'd drink a hell of a lot more than just a round of shots if he wanted to get shitfaced. He'd down almost the entire bottle and black out by the end of the night, usually waking up with a stranger and no memories of the previous night. He had stopped doing that lately, not only because he had Nell (and thus a reason to avoid bedding strangers) but because she made him happy enough that he didn't need to drown his sorrows. It didn't mean that he was immune to bouts of sadness but they were easier to fight off now that he had someone to share his life with. He liked being in a relationship a lot more than he'd always assumed he would. Commitment used to intimidate him but now he was glad for it. The only thing he didn't like was the abstinence. It had been a hell of a long time since he'd slept with anyone.
"Kids?" he repeated curiously, unable to help himself. His thoughts immediately went to small children and he wondered what the context for her statement was. He thought first of his little sister and how when they were younger she used to bring friends over for birthday parties and sleepovers. Once, a girl had insisted on trying to rope him into their childish games and he had not been having it. He liked children but he did not like playing with dolls, which was what the merry gang of five year olds had been intent on doing. Then he thought of Nell and how she worked at the daycare. Ashley didn't look old enough to have children of her own but maybe she had little siblings or a babysitting job or something? He couldn't think of any other situation that would involve getting kids to behave. Unless she's talking about the Academy students? The thought highly amused him. They certainly act like oversized children sometimes. Not all of them, but some. "I guess it depends on your tolerance and how much you drink." A beer or two didn't do much for Josh. A meagre and short-lived buzz at best. Whiskey was amazing.
Fuck it, now I want to drink. He had self-control however and knew that he would not give in to the desire. Living with Nell had helped him with even the little cravings. He'd never had the workings of an alcoholic—Joshua didn't have an addictive personality. He was capable of quitting things cold turkey. He knew in theory it would be a lot harder to come off smoking or heavy drugs but he'd never taken them and so had never possessed the need to try. Josh quite valued his lungs and his brain cells. He also valued his liver, so he supposed cutting back his drinking early was good for more than one reason. He accepted the book back from her and signed the 'X' in the final unoccupied top square, sandwiched between her two O's.

Ashley nodded as he repeated the words. "Yes kids. I happen to love them, they happen to be my whole life." She said not really thinking much of it. Children were the only thing that made sense to her and she never really saw much reason to keep it a secret. The picture drawn in crayon she kept taped above her bed in the dorms was proof of that. She could go on hour long rants and conversations about anything to do with children from the fastest way to fold cloth dippers to what she wants to name her kids. Of course she wouldn't bore the man with anything like that since she really doubted he cared. "Hey remember the first time we met, I asked you if there were any kind of parenting classes and you wouldn't answer me? Well now that your not throwing fire balls at my head could you possibly give me any kind of information? Maybe classes or a daycare in town? Ash had been too lazy to go down to the office after getting out of the med wing but talking about it suddenly made her care and almost feel bad about drinking. She nodded again at his statement. "I know what you mean. I would never have more than a beer or two when working with them. Not that I can hold my liquor well so sometimes two beers is a lot." Ash decided to shut up before she looked any more like an idiot. She looked at the page.
She starred at it for a good amount of time. The game was over, no one was winning. She considered drawing another one but she could feel a head ache coming on. "How long have we been here anyway? Any idea how long I gotta stay? She asked pulling out a water bottle and taking a sip. As much as she was actually enjoying his company she had boys to flirt with and parties to crash. It was funny how a few short months had changed her from a careful individual who kept to themselves to someone who went to parties and spoke to boys. Ash yawned and put her head on the desk still looking at Mr.Nameless and thought of names to give him when they met in the future but it wasn't going so great since the moment her head hit the desk she entered a half awake half asleep state. It had been a long day.

Josh was admittedly quite surprised to hear that Ashley adored children. He knew that alcoholics and even drug addicts often had kids and still loved them despite their addictions but he never really connected a drunken teenager to a lover of children. It was also dangerous to drink around them and set a bad example but he kept his mouth shut about that, not one to interfere. Josh was relatively laid back when it came to his opinions on the personal lives of others—if they didn't try to tell him what to do, he'd extend the same courtesy, especially when he wasn't friends with them to begin with. So instead of mentioning how he thought it was a bad idea to drink around young kids, Joshua just nodded to show that he was listening. "I don't mind children," he said, just so that they were clear on that. He didn't want anyone thinking he was one of the nasty teenagers that would threaten any kid that came within five feet of him. Josh had a little sister and he'd practically helped raise her, he didn't think he could hate kids if he tried. He was a kid once, everyone was.
The graduate arched an eyebrow at her when she spoke. He wasn't sure what to make of the words, whether she was being silently bitter toward him for not answering her in the first place or whether she genuinely wanted to know and didn't know who else to ask. He also considered not telling her at all even though he could definitely answer at least one of those questions but Josh figured there was no point in being an asshole. He didn't hold grudges. They were not friends and he didn't really care about this girl but she was not trying to start fights with him so he figured he may as well extend the same courtesy. "I'm in college," he pointed out. "They've probably got optional electives in high school but I never took them in my time so I wouldn't know." He had been more interested in Biology, Psychology, History, English. Besides, he didn't figure he needed any parenting classes. He didn't plan on adopting a kid or getting anyone pregnant and besides, he'd had experience when it came to his sister. "A daycare, though, I'm pretty sure there's a few. Why?" He was adamant that he wouldn't give her the address or name of the one Nell worked at, though. Relaxed or not, he was still wary.
Again she mentioned drinking in conjunction with children, and that just solidified the wariness. He didn't like the idea of anyone getting drunk around kids. He'd always came home in the dead hours of the morning when his baby sister was asleep if he was drunk and fell into bed, trying not to let on that anything was wrong in the morning when he was hungover. His parents had always known and Donovan had smacked him around a bit for it a few times but he was sure that Annabel's opinion on his drinking was still pretty much clueless. "I can drink a lot," he said off-handedly. He had good tolerance and he was tall, so he could drink quite a bit. Josh glanced at the clock and yawned. "I've been here about fifteen minutes, I'd say about ten for you. I'm stuck for two hours. Didn't they tell you?" He knew it was customary to inform someone on how long they were trapped for—longer times for worse offences and all that.

It hadn't occurred to Ash that mystery man may not have gone to high school at the academy, therefore not knowing the classes it offered. She nodded as he talked but realized that a class wasn't necessary for her. She had dozens of contacts she could give to and daycare that would be more then happy to put in a good word. "I need a job and frankly it's the only thing that I'm good at, other then music but i doubt there are any places in the area that I could get a solid job with that. She was hoping to get an address out of him for somewhere she could check out since she needed some kind of income. "By the way who is your girlfriend? Would I know her?" She asked out of pure curiosity. Not that she would go out looking for her since that would be weird. She just wanted a name so if they ever ran into each other she could laugh to herself.
Ashley thought back to when she had been caught. "If they did I can't remember. She laughed at her own stupidity. She considered having a nap but was worried what would happen if a teacher came in. She tried to sit up and take another sip of her water. They had time to kill and there were few things she could think to talk to him about. She figured some of the clues from the book might not be that hard now that the buzz was wearing off. "Need any help with your puzzles?" She asked him half asleep wishing the could just leave and nap.

The need for a job had only been a part of Joshua's life very briefly. He had a volunteer job at the hospital but he did not get paid for it and did not need it for anything other than application experience on his medical school resume. He was taking 'pre-med' right now, Biology as his major with all the other necessary classes on the side. He couldn't wait until he could graduate and head off to start his actual training, his passion. He wondered if Ashley felt that way about children but, as usual, did not bother asking. He never really inquired much about others. He'd only needed a job for that short period of his life when he was really on his own—no place to live, no parents, no supportive girlfriend. He'd rented an apartment and worked at the tattoo parlour. Now he had the seemingly endless funds of his family, Nell, and a place to live, so the volunteer work was done simply because he enjoyed it. "You could always babysit. Some people'll pay good money for that." He'd never been paid to watch Annabel's friends for the day when their parents dropped them off to hang out with her but he didn't care. He wasn't doing it for the money, he'd always done it as a favour to his parents if they were too busy for it.
On the subject of music, he was a bit surprised to hear that she was a skeptic. He knew of several places in town that involved music and so he wondered how much Ashley actually knew about the Hollow. In what was becoming a pattern in this conversation, he kept any questions to himself. Instead, he offered, "Well, there's a pretty decent music store downtown—" even though he hated its owner with a passion "—and there are others around the Hollow. Unless you're talking about actually making music...?" He left it open so that she could say as much or as little as she wanted to. Even though he was only talking to her to kill the time and his own boredom he still wasn't going to be a nosy jerk about it. He stiffened slightly when she inquired about Nell, though, his guard instantly going up. Josh was a fiercely protective person and anything involving Nell made him wary. Nice (and drunk) as she was being right now, Ashley was a Fire elemental. Nell was not. "She goes to the Academy. You might." It was all he said, not giving a name or even an element. Since he'd vaguely mentioned things about the alliance Ashley could narrow it down to Water or Earth, but he'd say nothing further.
It did not phase him that she'd forgotten how long she was meant to be stuck here, seeing as he was well aware of the fact that she was buzzed. He said nothing to this, instead smirking to himself when she mentioned the crossword puzzles. They were rather difficult but he told himself not to judge her just because of the drinking. He drank, too, even though he'd cut back immensely. Josh had never really drank on school property, though. Maybe once or twice. "Depends on how good you are. These are the really difficult ones." He flipped through the book to show that most of them from Easy to Expert were completed, leaving only the Challengers section to go. He liked leaving the hard ones for last, liked the challenge. The puzzle was about halfway filled in. "Alright. Ninety-four down, a six letter word for 'expository scribblings'. Any idea?" He twirled the pen between his fingers and glanced in her direction.
[That's an actual clue an the entirely empty challenger crossword puzzle I'm looking at. I have no idea of the answer The challenger ones are like... insane difficulty.]
