Engagement was a big thing. He had always known that, of course, considering marriage was usually something to be celebrated, but he was only now realising how fond people could get about it. He'd been drinking with a friend in Blackjack and upon telling him the news they'd both been given a free round of drinks, no questions asked. His friends recieved the news fairly well for the most part, congratulating him and complimenting him on his choice. He'd had a few people who had expressed concerns about the age of the couple but they had mostly been dismissed by Joshua. He was not worried, Nell was not worried, and in the end they were the only two that mattered to make things work. However, despite the fact that he'd told quite a few people when Nell had come up in various conversations, there were some of his close friends he hadn't informed yet. Like Ace. Seeing as they shared a common friend in the Earth elemental and he'd known Ace for several years, he figured that he would tell him in person rather than just phoning him up and letting him know. He wondered if Nell had already mentioned it but dismissed the idea quickly. He figured being friends as they were, Ace would have at least said something when Josh had phoned him up a few times previously.
His parents had been largely supportive of the whole thing, including his father. He was genuinely surprised by how well Donovan was taking everything and was also a bit touched by the way the man had offered his genuine advice and approval. Trish had forgiven him for the delay on telling her and was now announcing to any friend that would listen that her son was a soon-to-be-married man. Annabel was crooning over the idea that she'd have a sister in Nell soon enough and Josh was just immensely fond of his entire family right at that moment. Everything is okay. It was a comforting thought. Having found a window of free time between school, work, and maintaining a relationship with his now-fiancée, he called Ace and left a message. "Hey Ace, there's some stuff I wanna talk to you about. Mind meeting me at the Timmies downtown? You know that one on the corner by the laundry mat and the pizza place?" He also told the Water elemental to drop him a text and say whether or not he was coming, just so that he wouldn't be sitting in a coffee shop for hours waiting for someone that did not plan to show. He had faith in Ace's friendship and doubted the boy would blow him off but there was a possibility that he had other things to do. Joshua's free time did not always correlate with everyone elses.
The little coffee shop on the street corner was always packed. Joshua was someone that did not like large crowds in places such as clubs or hallways—he didn't like the feeling of people pressing in around him and blocking a clear path to the door. The cafe was a good kind of packed, however. The air was breathable and no one was particularly unpleasant, at least not on that day. He apologised when he nearly cut someone off walking through the door and held it open so that they could pass by, at which point they thanked him and went on their way. Manners were something he had an appreciation for. Even someone as mistrustful as Josh could maintain them. He waited until his friend arrived to place the order, greeting him with a grin and a, "Hey, man, glad you showed up." It was always good to see friends again, even if it had only been a few weeks since they'd spoken in person. That was still a rather long time for him to go without talking to a best friend, though, and he figured that Ace deserved an explanation. It was good news and so he was actually looking forward to telling him. Before he did that, however, there were general things he wanted to get out of the way, first. "What were you up to? I hope I didn't interrupt anything too important." The concern was voiced lightly but it was a genuine one. No one liked to be an inconvenience.
Joshua ordered himself a large hot chocolate and a soup and sandwich pairing, deciding that he might as well eat while he was here. The comfort of his family's fortune was always there to remind him he could indulge on such things without worry. "Got any cash on you? I can pay if you're short." Though hard to befriend, Josh was very generous and loyal once you'd reached a certain point. He was a bit reckless with money used on himself but he was also considerate enough of his loved ones and companions that he'd make them comfortable with it. He did not flaunt his money and status, did not hold it above their heads or spend needlessly when they were broke.
[Hope you don't mind me saying that he showed, I wanted Josh to talk so it gave you stuff to work with xD]

"Ace you sure you don't wanna stay?" Ace shook his head at the blond haired girl.
"Nah, I need to go somewhere, it's important." He replied to her. she was a pretty girl he met at a party a few weeks ago, they just hung out and made out sometimes, nothing really personal. They weren't dating, they were, well, each others booty calls for lack of a better term. Not really friends with benefits, sense they weren't really friends, but booty call was probably the best term for it. Ace really didn't mind it at all, it was just fun to do and there was no being tied down. However today he had received a message from a friend who he hadn't spoken to in a few weeks. Not that he didn't want to, just he had no time to see him and usually their free time didn't coincide. The message was from Josh of course, and it didn't seem urgent, but still Ace hadn't seen him in a few weeks, and it was bro's before hoe's right? Not that the girl was a hoe, she was actually really nice and not anything bad. It was just a saying.
Ace shrugged on his jacket, there was less snow, but he still didn't want to risk using his bike. When he was back outside a chilly breeze swept by moving small swirls of snow around. Ace pulled out his phone and texted Josh, 'I'm coming.' not one for long text messages, short and sweet was what he would usually text. He wasn't much of a long texter, his text usually contained one or two sentences, unless of course the topic at hand was interesting, or he was giving some advice then he'd have texts a few more sentences long. He usually never had to go over two texts to convey what he was saying, any more and he might as well call the person instead. The walk to the coffee shop wasn't long, it was only maybe ten minutes from where he was. He was glad he didn't have to take the bus, he didn't like the bus all that much, it smelled and there were usually a lot of people. Plus after about ten some weird people got on the bus.
The shop seemed busy active, not really in the slump of the day. There were people around and it wasn't crowded where people couldn't find a seat at one of the booths. Ace shivered as he stood in the cold examining the place. Then he pulled open the door and went in quickly, escaping from the chill that was starting to set in. As he got in he rubbed his hands and wiped his feet on the black mat that most stores had in front of the doors. It was pretty convenient, most of the snow was out of his shoes and he didn't have to worry about sliding all over the place on melted snow. Ace looked around and noticed his friend sitting down at an empty table he walked over dodging people and trying his best not to get in the way.
"Hey, man, glad you showed up."
Ace grinned and sat down, "Hey Josh." Ace greeted him. It was good to see Josh again. He liked hanging out with Josh, sometimes he felt as if his IQ was raising being near him. But he hadn't talked to him in a while, school and life got in the way of that, and free time was sometimes hard to come by. So it was relaxing when he could just hang out with friends. One of his favorite activities was hanging out with friends, there wasn't anything else too it. Ace shrugged, "Nah nothing important," Sex wasn't really important at the moment, so it was the truth. "Nah it's cool, I have some money on me." In truth however it was only five bucks, enough to by him a hot chocolate. Ace didn't really like accepting money, from anyone really, he liked to do things on his own, earn the money first. Sure he accepted money from Josh before, but he always paid it back. Ace was prideful that way, stubborn, it would take a person a while to convince him to accept money.
Ace bought a hot chocolate and came back to the table, now only a few dollars on him, but had some in the bank. "So what's up?" Ace asked before taking a casual sip from the hot chocolate.

Never one to doubt his friends without good reason for it, Joshua accepted Ace's words with a simple dip of his head. He could understand what pride was like and so he only ever argued issues of money with Nell when it came to going on a date. He liked to be traditional and courteous in handling the bill, she didn't like anyone paying for the mass amounts of food she consumed, so going out to eat generally had to be a planned thing. That was alright with him. He'd adjusted to it and didn't mind making sure they both agreed before they left the apartment. The relationship was relatively easy to maintain and that was why he was so confident in the fact he'd asked her to marry him. Oh, he hadn't been confident she'd say yes—he'd been terrified about that—but he'd known that he was sure about the two of them. Apparently she was, as well. "Never a bad day for hot chocolate," he remarked, lifting his own slightly so that Ace could see they'd both purchased the same thing. He took a bit out of the sandwich while his friend sat down, taking advantage of the brief silence to eat some food. He was not rude and didn't talk with his mouth full, especially not when he was out with a friend.
Swallowing and taking a sip of the hot liquid, feeling the soothing burn down his throat, Josh paused at the question. He was both considering how he should answer and whether or not he should drop the news right away or wait a little. Even though he was both confident and assertive, he still felt a bit of trepidation when it came to telling people. No one liked their friends and family to look down on them. Josh might have been proud and stubborn but he was also loyal and valued the opinions of those close to him. Disapproval from someone like Devin or Ace would not make him change his mind about Nell in the least but it didn't mean it would have no effect on him. Deciding after a few moments to start with a brief lead-in before he put everything onto the table, he said, "Well, I've mostly been with Nell. You know how it is." He smiled briefly and trusted Ace not to hold that against him. 'Bros before hoes' didn't always apply when it came to a stable and healthy relationship. If he always put his guy pals before Nell then they'd be in a lot less of a successful state right now. He wouldn't be around as much and they probably wouldn't have gotten as close. "I called a few times but I haven't really had the time to hang out."
He had made plans with a few other people but they were usually spontaneous and quick things. He'd went out with a friend on his birthday to the bar because it was a birthday. There was only one of those per year and his buddy would otherwise have been alone. Granted, that backfired slightly when he ended up being the one alone but he hadn't minded much. His temper was a little calmer lately. He wondered if his friends ever noticed, and whether they attributed it to maturity or the fact that he was no longer hanging around his old crowd of Fires and Thunders. He did not think that Nell had really changed his personality much, merely given him much needed training in reigning in his rage. He couldn't go blowing up at his now-fiancée over the little things and so in increasing his fuse over time he'd also became more patient with other people. It was by a small amount, but it was still useful. "We got engaged," he said after the pause, coming out with it. He took a very casual sip of the hot chocolate. The smile that tugged briefly at his lips suggested it was a good thing. "Don't worry, it wasn't for any specific... reason," he hinted, hoping Ace could infer it meant he'd not knocked Nell up. That would be a problem. They were both still in college, not really fit to be parents. "That's why I've been a bit absent. Figured it was best to tell you in person."

Ace gave his friend a grin as he saw they had purchased the same item. "Great minds think alike." He said before taking another sip. Hot chocolate was the best, better than any drink one could have during the winter. It warmed you up and unlike drinks like coffee or whiskey it had this childhood innocence in it. It was a drink that, from childhood, nearly every boy and girl had learned to love. A sweet warmth that filled you with a happiness sure enough to make the ol scrooge grin. Hot chocolate just had that sort of feeling to it, it was something that lasted throughout the ages, something that would exist in the future. The simple happy recipe was something that time itself couldn't make vanish. It always kept him warm during the summer days, and marshmallows with hot cocoa was his favorite winter treat. He didn't know anyone who didn't like hot chocolate. Ace would sometimes wonder how hot chocolate was made without the powder, but guessed it had to do with some melted chocolate or something. Ace liked his hot chocolate powder mixed with milk when he made it at home. He didn't find making it with water better than milk. It was just a preference of his of course.
Ace nodded, and drank from his cup, nearly burning his tongue but he managed to gulp it down quickly enough. "Yea girlfriends and such, I understand." Ace said with an understanding smile. It was good to be with your girlfriend, a relationship needed attention, and so giving it the most would usually result in a good, stable, relationship. Then he again agreed with Josh's next statement. "Yea we've hadn't had much free time huh?" Ace had his reasons, his job, studying and getting into the swing of college. He didn't really have time to hang out, when he did it was usually to sleep, or to go out and party. He'd tried to hang out with Josh but at the time Josh was busy with something, Ace didn't remember what it was (he was a bit drunk at the time).
Ace was in the middle of drinking when Josh told him about the good news. He did a genuine spit take, something he never thought he could do, onto the ground, the people around them were looking and Ace apologized with an embarrassed look. He cleaned up his mess with some napkins he had taken from the counter. placing those next to his drink as he didn't want to throw them out because he was still, amazed, and listening to josh. "DUDE! That's great news! Congrats! " Ace exclaimed excitedly. His best friend was getting married now that was something amazing. "Josh, man, your gettin married! Getting the ball and chain and everything!" Ace said jokingly, he knew that their marriage probably wouldn't be like that. Ace had seen the two together, and knew they were a good couple. And they were doing it by choice too, there was no baby in the mix that forced Josh's hand, or Nell's for that matter. There really was true love in this world, and it warmed Ace's heart. "Woow, that's so awesome." Ace said in wonder. "I'm speechless now dude,.. I sorta wanna hug you in congratulation."
((yes I did talk about Hot chocolate for 214 words.))

It was nice to have someone that understood the many fundamentals of a relationship rather than insisting that he was whipped and needed to put his friends before Nell. True friends of Josh Dale understood that he was a loyal and dedicated person even if he wasn't always around to prove it and that even though he put Nell first it didn't mean she was necessarily better than them. She was just different. There was a big difference between a best friend and a girlfriend and there was an especially big difference as soon as she became your fiancée. It was a partnership, a bond for life, and Josh was going to respect that. His lips twitched mischievously at the word 'girlfriend' but to someone that did not know of the engagement it might have seemed like an ordinary smile. "How's college working out for you?" It might have seemed a random question and not one you might usually ask a friend but Josh was very dedicated to education. He couldn't curb his curiosity when it came to things like learning and knowledges. It was why he liked chess so much where Ace specialised in things like video games. "Apart from Nell, that's been plaguing me as well. Damned double majors." Despite the words, his tone was light. He did not mean it. He liked studying both majors at once and would have dropped one if he'd any real complaints.
Though he'd never been a particularly easy to phase person, his friend's spittake had been rather unexpected. He flinched instinctively in concern that the sprayed liquid would hit him—it did not, but he managed to get some of the soup he'd been eating on his stark white shirt. It was hot to the touch but he merely frowned at it briefly in annoyance before turning his attention to his friend, who was rather politely fixing the mess he'd made. He would have liked to have helped his friend with a simple demonstration of his powers but he understood that it was not such a good idea in the middle of a public place. Instead, he gave Ace a light smile and joked, "Say it, don't spray it." He had not gotten anything on his shirt that was not a result of his own instinctive reaction and so he was not actually upset. His gaze was warm as he soaked in the good reaction, glad that Ace had taken the news well. "Woe is me, stuck with Nell for life. What ever shall I do?" His smile creeped its way into a grin. He would be perfectly content to stay with Nell for life and longer at this point. He had no regrets when it came to asking her. "Should have seen her face. She thought I was kidding!" He laughed softly at the memory.
When Ace spoke of hugging him, Josh held his arms open in a joking gesture. "Go for it?" Though mostly messing around, he would not protest if Ace decided to actually hug him. Contrary to some belief, he did not shank everyone that came within a five foot radius. Especially not friends. He'd hugged Devin before, and Lark, and Nell of course. He'd done a lot more than just hug his fiancée. "Speaking of celebrating," he said, "I'm pretty sure I've got a bottle of Crown in the car. We could head back to the apartment, grab a few shots?" Then he recalled that Ace, despite their closeness, had absolutely no idea that he was living with Nell. He really didn't speak a lot about himself, did he? It admittedly shocked him to know that he'd never told his friend. "I live with her now," he tacked on. "Things with the parents are fine, they're happy for me, I just wanted to be close to her." They were newly engaged, it made sense to long for that sort of closeness and companionship. At least, it made sense in Joshua's eyes. "What do you say? I know you technically can't drink whiskey but... ah, I never offered a thing." He winked. He had drank since he was around ten or eleven and so he was not one to discourage underage drinking. Certainly not.

Ace understood girls, he knew that if you want a good relationship than you put the girl ahead of your friends, most of the time. There were those instances when you had to be able to differentiate between the two situations. Ace generally found that when a friend had something good happen to him, like for instance, getting married, you go out with your friend to celebrate. However it was good to spend more time with your girl instead of with your friends. It wasn't an exact science but Ace had a good idea of what to do for a girl. "Eh, it's going okay, not as good as I like really." Ace said with a bit of a shrug. Most of college was time management, and in the beginning Ace didn't do well. He forgot to do homework, and sometimes even didn't go out to class, but he was getting better. Just that it would take some more effort on Ace's part to get his grades back up to the place where he wanted them. Ace laughed at Josh's remark, he knew josh didn't mean it, not only the tone, but Josh was pretty tough when it came to school. He wondered how he'd be on his kids when they were growing up. Would he be tough on them so they would make good grades? Ace knew that he'd be pretty relaxed, as long as they tried their best, that's really all he asked.
Ace never really ever thought he'd do a spittake. He saw them on tv and thought they were pretty funny. He'd done a few spittakes when he and his friends tried to get him to laugh or something, but he didn't think he'd do an authentic spittake that just happened on it's own. After his mess was cleaned up, and he checked for any hot chocolate that had gotten onto his shirt he, he sat back down. He gave his friend a sarcastic look, "Oh ha ha." Ace grinned, "But dude, your getting married!" he said again like repeating it would get rid of the initial shock that had settled onto him by the way Josh said it. It was like saying, ' Oh I heard that the game was good, I have cancer, And I know that you guys tried your best.' If it was Ace saying it, he'd be all grinning and happy, and say something along the lines, 'Dude guess what? I'm getting married!' And then more jubilation and celebration. "Man you lucky dog, Nell is such a great girl, I'm happy for you bro, for both of you." He said proudly. His friends now engaged, and here he was girlfriendless. He hoped the three could still hang out and Ace not be an awkward third wheel. "Oh man you should have recorded it!" Ace said laughing, oh Nell, she was so funny sometimes.
Ace blinked as Josh opened his arms. Was he serious? Ace figured he was probably joking, however, this being Josh, and hugging bromance moments were rare, Ace took him up on it. Ace went, and hugged Josh in one of Ace's best, bear hugs. "Oh dude, congrats again," Of course Ace kept hugging him until he reached that awkward moment of too long of a guy hug. He was intentionally going for this, to joke around with his friend. He was in good spirits, and when he was in good spirits he was generally a joking person. He let go once he approved of the number of people staring, "Should we hold hands now?" Ace joked. "Dude I always accept a free drink, though... only if it's poured in front of me. Roofies are not good." Ace said nodding at his wisdom, roofies are bad, not that he was unlucky (or lucky?) enough to get some in his drink, just that, well he had to take care of a friend who had some at a club. "Let's a go!"

Joshua's gray eyes were curious when Ace let onto the fact that college wasn't going as well as he'd hoped. The Fire graduate had always had a favourable college experience because he enjoyed the fact that he could focus on his passions without mandatory courses he didn't like getting in the way. Like gym. Physical education had never been a class he enjoyed—he'd take part and got good marks for trying, because that was all you could really do in that class, but he'd hated it. Now he was free and on his way to receiving a bachelors in both biology and history. "Really? Why's that?" He couldn't help but ask. Josh was interested in the lives of his friends and he was also interested in how their education was going. He'd never look down on someone like Ace if they didn't like school as much as he did. Heck, he couldn't blame a lot of people for hating it. Everybody was different. He was just wondering what had spoiled the experience. "Is it any better than high school?" he wondered. His workload had doubled since high school with all of the courses he was taking. He didn't mind that. He realised then that he wasn't even sure what Ace was taking. "What's your major?" His closest friends, Ace included, were privy to both the things he was aspiring to major in. He was secretive and didn't talk about himself much but that was always bound to come up in conversation at some point.
He bore a soft smile as Ace announced the point again. It was nice to hear that. Married. He and Nell were, some day in the future, going to be married. It was not just a possibility of a future together but a promise of one. Granted, the engagement could always backfire and be broken off but he didn't allow himself to dwell on such grim thoughts. For now he was just basking in the glow of the whole thing and enjoying the thought of the Earth girl as his soon-to-be wife. He knew that a lot of guys—girls, too—saw marriage as a prison sentence. It was binding yourself to someone else with a bunch of laws and unspoken rules you had to follow. It was arguments and bad living habits. He didn't see it that way. He'd already lived with Nell, found her quite easy to live with. And it wasn't like they were being married due to the possibility of a child out of wedlock. This was out of affection. It was fine. "Getting married," he agreed, nodding. "Yeah, she is great." He really loved her. He wanted to be with her. It wouldn't have even mattered if Ace was warning him against this or telling him it was a bad idea, he wanted to go through with it anyway. "She didn't really say much," he chuckled. "Nah, it was understandable. I didn't really give her much warning." His gray eyes were full of mischief, suggesting that he had perhaps done this on purpose. He liked to shock her, liked to see her reactions. She was adorable when she was flustered.
He was a bit taken aback when Ace actually hugged him but Joshua took it in stride, not really minding. That is, until he noticed that Ace was not letting go. "The fuck'd you do, coat yourself in super-glue or something?" It was said jokingly when Ace finally pulled away from him, Josh brushing off the awkwardness of it in his mind. He noticed the people staring in their direction and was more miffed by them than he was by his friend. Staring was rude. Joshua stood up in preparation for leaving the crowded coffee shop. Though he could tell Ace was joking (and mostly to make a point) he grasped his friend's hand in an iron grip. "Brothers," he joked, then grinned and let go. The graduate snorted at the idea of slipping Ace a roofie, then led the way out to his car. "I'm guessing you walked as I don't see your bike." He had drove his Lamborghini here as the roads weren't quite so icy as usual and he frowned at the slush and mud that had freckled her sides. He'd need to give the car a good wash later. He kept his Aventador in good condition, after all. He drove all the way to the apartment and got through the front door via the key in his pocket, having took the bottle of amber whiskey from the car as he'd said. It was sealed tight in accordance to the liquor laws—Josh didn't drink and drive, he'd just been taking it with him from where he'd bought it. He poured a shot for the pair of them. "Cheers," he said, knocking it back and feeling the burn down his throat.

Ace gave Josh a bit of a1sigh, "It's harder than I expected." Ace said cracking his knuckles. "It's just, well, it's difficult that's all. I think I really just need to get into the swing of things you know?" Ace gave him a shrug before drinking more of his hot cocoa. School was hard, he still didn't know why he picked the major he did. His mom was really rooting for something like a doctor. But he chose to pick psychology, a certain friend of his made him pick this up. Not really forced him into it, but it made him realize he could help her with her problems. He liked to listen to her talk, and to give her advice. So he really thought he might do good in Clinical psychology. "Eh it's a little better than high school. I don't have to wake up so early sometimes." Ace was glad for that, he was never really a morning person, not so much that he'd get up happily. Ace was the type of person to make the alarm go off maybe ten times before he finally got out of bed. Ace drank some more, the hot cocoa more like a warm chocolate now but it still tasted really good. "I'm going for Clinical Psychology." Ace then curiously looked over at Josh. "Aren't you double majoring in something?"
"Man, that would have been a funny sight." Ace said with a grin trying to imagine Nell that flustered, he thought he got close, but decided it was probably ten times more funny then what he pictured. "So how is the soon to be Mrs.Dale doing?" He asked. He hadn't spoken to Nell since they got back to the trial, it seemed even the world didn't stop for such an important moment. He got swept up in the tide of going to college and finals. Then he had to work more at his part time job, trying to earn money so he could get gas and an apartment when he turned eighteen. Room and Board was a bit expensive and if he could lower the fees for college it would mean more money for him. But then again, he'd have to pay rent and all those bills and such. Maybe it would be cheaper to just stay in the dorms.
Ace laughed, and walked with him to the car. "Yea I was close by, and it's still to icy out for my liking." Ace said shrugging. "And I don't have much gas money either." He added in to help explain his situation. He didn't really like to not have his bike. He loved the hell out of the thing. Maybe during the summer he'd just ride his bike across Canada for the hell of it. He wished he could drive his bike in the snow, that would be pretty cool. Maybe make ice treads for it once he was able to master ice easily. God he was so jealous of Josh at the moment. The lambo looked amazing, even with the bits of mud, it just made it stand out more. Most people with a car like this wouldn't even drive it, just display the beauty. Ace didn't like that, it was like keeping a stallion caged up and never riding him. You had to let the thing do what it was born (or in this case made) to do. It showed off the real beauty in a car. They drove to the apartment, and damn it was a nice one. Ace grinned "Cheers" Before also downing the shot feeling the familiar burn.

Josh nodded as his friend spoke, understanding that slightly. College was a lot more difficult that high school. It didn't bother him as much as it seemed to affect his friend but that didn't mean he was immune to the pressure. He'd juggled the double major uncertainly for the first couple months, alarmed by how much work he had to do on top of his volunteering job and what little of a social life he did have. Then he'd gotten the hang of it and it had been fairly smooth sailing since then. Joshua adapted easily to anything involving a workload, it was just in his nature. "That's tough," he sympathised. He wasn't trying to be punny and so he didn't make the connection to any sort of wordplay in his head. "Eh, you'll get there," Josh assured him. "It took me a few weeks." It had been longer than two weeks in Ace's case but they were vastly different people. Joshua wasn't worried about his friend—he was pretty confident in anyone that he was close to. Pessimism really only applied to his own life, most times. Except for his future in medicine. That was one thing that he was damned confident in and determined to achieve. He'd wanted this since he was a little kid and he was not going to let anything get in his way. That was what he always told himself when things got difficult. "Psychology?" Josh echoed, surprised. He hadn't taken Ace to be the type, but then again, he didn't know a lot of his friends like open books. Everyone had their little surprises. Joshua had a lot of them considering how much he kept from other people. He nodded, shocked again when he realised he'd never mentioned his major(s) to one of his closest friends. "Bio and History," he said. The majors were polar opposites and that caught some people off guard but he didn't care. "Only two more years of this place and then I'm in medical school," he mused, smirking in satisfaction. "God, I can't wait for that." It was merely a figure of speech, of course. Joshua was very patient.
There was something deeply satisfying about the thought of being married to Nell. He did not immediately grin or smile at his friend's words but there was a spark in his gray gaze that betrayed his silent delight. He really loved that girl. It was ironic sometimes when he considered a joking conversation he'd had with several of his friends years ago—he figured that Ace had probably heard it all before, as well. He'd never considered himself the type for romance and marriage and all the trimmings of both, he'd told people so. "I'll die alone. Not that I really care." And he hadn't cared, despite whether people believed him or not. Now, dying alone seemed like one of the worst things that could happen. He hated the idea of losing Nell and he didn't want to be alone, either. He wasn't clingy and he wouldn't be desperate if she left him but he didn't really fancy the idea. Pushing those thoughts away, he finally let a slight smile grace his lips. "We've both been great," he replied. "Why don't you stick around for a bit when you come over? Maybe she'll get home in time." He liked that his best friend and fiancée were on good terms, it made things easier for him. There were quite a few friends of Nell's that he didn't like and vice versa, so it was good when they did find a common ally. "Besides, I'm sure she'd like to see you." He remembered how Ace had showed up for the trial. That had given him a whole new sort of respect for his best friend, had solidified the trust a little more. Josh still hadn't opened up to him much about anything but it didn't mean he was suspicious of the Water boy. Hell, even Devin didn't know a lot about him. It was just the way he was.
Josh savoured the whiskey on his tongue, the familiar and welcome flavour. Whenever he drank, it was his preferred poison. To get drunk off beer he had to ensure that he drank very fast on an empty stomach, took no water in between, and couldn't even think about taking a pause for thought. It took a hell of a lot of the regular stuff to get someone of his tolerance and stature even buzzed. He hated trying to get smashed off regular beer. No, this was the good stuff. He wasn't trying to get drunk tonight, however, merely celebrating with a friend. He poured them both another shot and tossed this one back as well, shaking his head slightly and grinning. Then his attention was brought back to the stain on his shirt, a stain at which he frowned in displeasure. He didn't like when he looked unpresentable, even when he was just hanging out with a guy friend that likely wouldn't give two shits about it. "Be right back, gotta change." He grabbed a shirt and pulled off the old one as he walked back into the living room, not even considering the fact that it would be putting his scars on full display for Ace to see. He didn't think about the scars as often as he used to and so it was a subconscious thing for him. There were several marks—the curved scars on his ribs, the slash across his stomach and the deep wound that had scarred his collarbone. He paid them no mind, slipping on the new shirt and flattening his hair with a hand. "So, what do you want to do? I'm not sure when Nell'll be home." They had time to kill.

"Yea it is." He said with a bit of a frustrated sigh. "School's a bitch to handle. But I'll get the hang of it eventually." Ace grinned as his friend sympathized with him. "Well with me it might take a few months." Ace said with a good hearted laugh. School was bleh, but Ace always had a positive outlook on things. He was an optimistic person, ask him if the glass was half full or half empty, he'd fill it up for you and say that it was full now. That's just the way he worked. "Yea Psych. It's always interesting to me how a person works or why they do things that others might not do." He said with a shrug as he swirled his hot chocolate around. "And I think I'm good at listening you know? Advice and all that, maybe I'll become the guidance councilor for the Academy." He laughed. Now that he thought about it, he hadn't really ever known if the school had a guidance councilor. He never really needed to talk to one, Ace usually knew where he was going, how to get there, or how to deal with problems. It what helped him become a good advice giver, to go through problems on his own, and help people get through it. "That's pretty sweet," Ace admired his friends choice in majors. Honestly, Ace didn't really like History that much, it wasn't his cup of tea. Sure you could learn a lot from it, but in the end it was what you did that mattered. Ace would rather make History than to learn about it. He laughed, "I don't think I'd be able to last in Med school. I never really did well in bio."
Ace grinned "That's good. And how bout your bed life if you'd be so generous as to provide your best friend, who is very nosy but means the best, with the info?" He asked leaning across the table in a half joking, half really really interested way. He laughed and sat back in his chair. "I'm just kidding, you don't have to tell me about it if you don't want to." Ace took a sip from his drink again. "Even though I'm nosy and I'd like to listen." He half muttered as he drank making it loud enough so Josh could hear what he had said. He grinned, "I'd love to stay over for a while." Ace was happy about the invitation. He'd love to stay over and see Nell. Since the trial they hadn't spoken very often. Mostly because of Ace getting swept up in the currents of school.
Ace took the next shot as well as the one before it. Soon the whiskey was gliding down his throat. "Yum." He said grinning. Why did poison have to taste so good? Ace wasn't that bad of a drinker. He had his limits like everyone else. But he wasn't like Josh, a few beers could get him tipsy, a few more and he'd be drunk. He wasn't very good at getting the expensive stuff. So cheap beer it was for him. He did manage to get wine on his birthday however. That's how he celebrated. A bottle of wine on the cliffs of the School. He missed sitting with Ray on his birthday, he missed her, so that's how he helped remember her. He would sit alone, staring at the sky whether cloudy or clear. And drink away the night. "Whoa dude," Ace said looking at Josh. "Did you fight a tiger to get your clothes, and then face off against ninjas on your way back?" Ace said eying the scars. There was a lot of them. "Cause you should teach me some of that, damn ninja's are everywhere." He said jokingly. However he still kept a wary eye on where those scars were. "What happened?"

Joshua snorted doubtfully. "You, a guidance counsellor? That's a funny thought." Though he supposed his ignorance did make sense in a way—he'd never really opened up to Ace in order to learn that his friend was good at listening to problems. Even though he now carried that knowledge, he didn't plan on telling Ace much about himself. He was secretive and it was going to stay that way for a long time, perhaps forever. If he hadn't told Devin, his best friend of many years, then Ace wasn't going to be any exception. He was surprised to hear that Ace hadn't done well in Biology considering they'd worked at the hospital together for years and he'd always assumed that they were journeying down the same path. Still, medical careers weren't for everyone, and it wasn't like they'd done a whole lot of practices and hands-on experience at the hospital. It was mostly ferrying things back and forth between rooms and cleaning up the empty ones. It was rather pathetic work if you considered what Joshua wanted to actually do with his life but it would look good on an application for medical school and that was the entire reason he had started. "That sucks. Have you thought about what you do want to do?" He hadn't actually taken Ace's comment about becoming a guidance counsellor seriously and so he was wondering what sort of field he wanted to work in. Psychology, probably, seeing as he'd taken it as a major.
Speaking of secrets, his sex life was another thing he generally didn't go shouting about. Ace had known about his previously loose ways and vice versa due to their hanging around one another for so long but now that he had a girlfriend fiancée, he usually kept everything to himself. He did not feel the need to brag and besides, he hadn't been given anything to brag about until recently. It would have been rather awkward to admit that he'd not been having sex with her for the majority of their relationship. He didn't get embarrassed by things like that but it did spark a bit of jealousy when he realised that not everyone had to wait that long. Hell, some girls were willing to put out on the first date. It had taken several months with Nell. And that was alright, he didn't hold it against her, but he wasn't about to give an account to Ace about it. Instead, he smirked. "Bed? Oh, we both sleep pretty well, thanks." His gray eyes glittered as he gave the sarcastic response. "Our business is ours." His tone was light but fairly final. He wasn't sharing. "Besides," he said, and the smirk returned, "I shudder to think what you'd do with that information."
Joshua stiffened visibly when Ace pointed out the scars, tense and wary now that his attention was brought to them once again. His buddy might have been able to laugh and make jokes about the marks across his chest but Josh was not yet at that point. He wasn't quite as self-conscious and paranoid about them as he'd been a year ago but that didn't mean they were up for casual discussion. Still, he wasn't about to lie to his best friend... not quite, anyway. He lied through his teeth to most people that noticed and insisted that it had been a car accident or something similar but Ace wasn't as likely to believe it. "A fight," he said curtly, his tone as stiff as his muscles were. He left it there, sitting down and feeling vastly uncomfortable. The silence seemed to prickle with suspicion. I wonder what he thinks? Josh doubted that Ace would pinpoint a gang as the assailants, considered Joshua wasn't exactly Class A gangbanger material. He didn't fit society's classic image of a street thug because he wasn't one. Not any more. He hated who he'd once been and, as was clear by his current attitude, didn't really like talking about it. "As if the scar on my face wasn't noticeable enough to begin with," he said sourly. "You never asked about that." His tone did not invite questioning, either. It was colder than he usually was with Ace. His gray eyes were steely and narrowed, lips pressed into a hard line.

Ace laughed. "Yea yea it's weird but I've been told I give good advice." Ace said with a shrug. He'd probably picked it up from the hospital. He had talked with a lot of the patients there, some were terminally ill, others were just there for a few days. He'd learned a lot about people, learned about what they did, what they wised for. Sometimes he just talked with them just to talk. He didn't have anything to do at that moment so he just spoke with them. He learned they're stories, the things they did during their lives. He heard some people talk about wars, or fights, or past sweethearts. He heard some kids talk about school, and what was happening during their lives, or what they'd be doing if they weren't in the hospital. He learned to listen, and give advice where it counted. Some people told him he was good at that, and he should be a therapist or something. He would usually laugh, and say it was a possibility. Maybe a guidance councilor is good though, because he liked helping kids out the most. Ace drank the last of his hot chocolate "A guidance counselor," he repeated not taking offense to his friend, "Or a therapist."
Ace leaned back in his chair. "Oh alright alright." Ace said with a grin, "Gasp, I would do nothing with that information!" Ace said with a faux shocked face. Ace didn't want to pry on that information, it was rather useless to him other than gossip. But Ace would never talk about his friends behind his back, he was too loyal for that. Ace was a secret keeper, a person to confide in, a person who wouldn't tell a soul about their secret unless they gave him permission to tell a certain person. It was patient confidentiality. Maybe that's why he'd be a good guidance councilor or a good therapist.
Ace poured himself a drink, "I see. Ninja's were the matter then." He said lightly, but without smiling. He was concerned, but he didn't know if he should press the matter with Josh. The two were friends, had been friends since Ace first met him when they volunteered at the hospital together. He knew Josh, right? Then again, Josh never really talked about himself, they just hung out most of the time, and avoided each other during wars, usually just hanging out in town or at his house. Josh had never spoken about his past to Ace, not a lot anyway. Ace hadn't spoken to him about his past, the two were both guarding secrets. But maybe now was the time to ask about that closed door, to wonder what had happened. Ace would open up his door first if he had too, or after if Josh told him. He'd open up his secrets for him either way. Friends deserved that didn't it. Ace drank the shot and looked at Josh. He'd seen that face before, it meant, stop asking, but maybe now was the time to start pushing, he didn't want to ruin his friendship with Josh, he didn't think Nell would let either of them be not friends. "You said you got it when you fell doing something, I believed you because it seemed totally plausible, but I doubt you got those scars from falling. Unless you were at the broken glass and sharp knives recycling plant." Ace said looking calmly at Josh. "What happened?"

Though he arched an eyebrow, Joshua said nothing more on the matter. Maybe he did, maybe he didn't. Josh had no right to judge his friend on a subject that he knew nothing about and so he let it stand as it did, asking no more questions. Ace might have been good at giving advice to the right people—heck, Josh would even support him in that. Helping people was a good thing. However, he was surprised to find that his friend was serious about the guidance counsellor thing. "Does that even pay decent money?" The question was confused and doubtful. He didn't consider for a moment that his friend didn't give a damn how much he would be paid for listening to people's problems because Joshua had grown up with money and he wanted to make a lot of it himself. It was something that he didn't put much thought into, that he had simply known for a long time. "Well, if that's what you want to do... go for it. Psychology's a difficult major, though, and you'll have to go to school for a long time." He was aware of this because he knew someone with a minor in History that was taking Psychology as their major and aspired to be a therapist. She had a long road ahead of her, apparently. Heck, so did Josh. He'd need three or four years of medical school after college and then up to another six years for specialisation. The idea of a long schooling process didn't frighten him but he wondered why Ace aspired to it if college was such a pain to him.
Despite their friendship, Ace made the wrong move in continuing the joke about the scarring. Josh was getting better about how much the scars bothered him in his daily life but that did not mean that he appreciated their use in light-hearted humour—especially not by a friend. Joshua did not expect a whole lot from other people, assuming that most were out for themselves, but he did expect a certain amount of respect for his privacy and the things that he'd gone through. His muscles were so tense that the veins in the backs of his hands stood out, thin rivers of blue against bleached white. He did not look at his friend for a long moment, instead glaring at the window and trying to resist starting an argument. That was what he'd usually have done in this situation. Damn it, he hated it when people bothered him about the scars. It was like a berserk button for him, something that was not meant to be touched upon. When Ace had inquired about his sex life he'd been able to easily brush off the personal question and move on but this was a different matter entirely. He turned his head to glare at Ace when the Water elemental opened his mouth again, a violent thought coursing through his mind. Just shut up, he snapped internally, but resisted saying it aloud.
"I never told you that I fell," he spat, every syllable coated with venom. "Even I'm not that stupid—no fall would have caused something like this." He jerked his left hand toward his face. The deep scar in the palm of it was another scar that he'd left unexplained. He hated it when people stared, hated when they asked, hated when they made their stupid assumptions about him. Some people got a little too close to the truth for comfort and others painted him in a terrible light. He wished that other people would just mind their own business and keep his scars out of their speculations. His friends were a little different. He understood that they'd wonder, that they'd worry, that they might ask. But he did expect them to refrain from prying. "If I'd told you anything, it would have been that I got into an accident. Which I didn't, as I'm sure you've fucking realised." He did not mean to make Ace out as being stupid with his snarled words but he had lost his temper and his patience was quickly running out. "It's none of your damn business what happened, Ace, especially not if you think it's funny." Cracking jokes about his scars were one surefire way to set him off, even if you were a friend.
[o.o berserk button. sorry, josh just... flipped out.]

Ace laughed, "That's the thing though Josh." Ace ran a hand through his hair, messing it up before fixing it. "To me it doesn't matter about the money. Well that's not entirely true, I do want to have a good enough living. But if I also want to do something I like to do. Listening to people, helping them out, I can't save them in the hospital like what you want to do. But maybe my words will help someone out, kick them out of the suicide hotline. Make them realize live is worth living." Ace had experienced this feeling himself, he knew what he was talking about. "I don't mind if it doesn't pay great money, as long as I love to do it you know?" Ace leaned back in his chair and nodded as Josh told him about the psychology thing. "Yea I know, But I don't mind, I like to see the goal instead of the obstacle, though i keep the obstacle in peripheral vision." Ace said making a simile. If he only saw the goal, he'd trip up over the obstacle. But if he only saw the obstacle it'd make him lose confidence in what he could do. So watching both at the same time seemed like it'd be the best way to succeed.
Ace turned his head away from Josh, slightly shielding himself from Josh's rage. He drank another shot, he should probably stop. He listened to Josh, he was yelling at Ace. Ace felt a little hurt, they'd known each other for years and yet Ace still managed to step on one of the landmines. He thought he had mapped out where all the mines were, what not to say, what not to ask. Maybe it was the whiskey and the happy mood that made him ask, maybe it was just something he couldn't stop but ask about. He was worried about his friend, how he got the scars, if they might appear again. Everyone had a back story, that was Josh's, and would Josh share it with him. Ace put down the glass, and with quiet calm words, words that sounded like he was out of it, he spoke. "I don't think it's funny, it's how I deal with sad things." Ace said, he looked at the amber liquid in the crystal like bottle. His hands reached for his watch and undid it, making sure to avoid looking directly at the scar. He was getting better at not freaking out about it. "I thought, I was allowed to ask about it, I've been your friend since I came here. I just thought..." Ace stopped, he let out a somber breath, quiet and a little hurt. "We all have our scars Josh, sometimes it's better to have someone help shoulder their pain." Ace rolled his sleeve up, his bare wrist pale where his watch had laid. He didn't look at it, he didn't want to see it. He raised his hand and turned it to Josh so he could see the ugly scar across his wrist. The thing that shamed him, that hurt him, that made him. Ace dealt with sadness and tragedy with jokes, because he hated the sight of people being sad, hated the sight of people crying, hated the sight of people angry. He joked, because he was scared, because he was sad, because he was worried. He joked because he didn't want sadness in his life again, he didn't want to be sad, or crying. So he joked.
When he felt that the scar had been shown for long enough, he recovered it, watch then sleeve. He picked up his jacket and pulled that on, he didn't know if he felt welcome anymore. At the moment, he was probably being kicked out. "Talk to me if you want to. You know where I am." He said before opening the door. He meant to talk about the scars, or at least talk when Josh had cooled down. He learned that that was another thing. To leave Josh alone when he snapped, it was better to give a thing of solitude it's space. It was better for both of them and they're relationship. He waited a moment, thinking about saying something else, then decided not to. Ace walked out of the apartment, his hand closing the door, the audible click as the door shut echoing in the hallway. Ace closed his eyes and sighed, then walked down towards the stairs.
[Bleeh.. All of Ace's threads do 180's... Josh can go after him, or we can continue a few weeks/days later]

[I don't think that means what you think it means xD]
Josh wondered fleetingly whether Ace would be able to make it through a major as hard as Psychology as well as through eleven or so years of schooling, but he pushed this aside in favour of faith in his friend. He wasn't supposed to doubt the people he cared about and their intelligence. He didn't doubt that Ace was smart, after all, he just wondered why someone that had trouble getting organized in college would condemn themselves for so long. Then again, people will do a lot for what they love. He was ready to commit to a long time of learning for his doctorate in medicine and so he figured Ace would do the same. "Good luck, then." His words were sincere. He hoped that Ace was able to become a therapist and help people out, it would be good for him. Ace always seemed to like playing the hero whereas Joshua was content to save heroics for his friends alone. He didn't like getting involved in things that didn't involve him in the first place. If Nell was in danger he'd do anything to help her and he felt the same about his inner circle of friends but he would not go out of his way to help a complete stranger like Ace would. He somewhat admired but did not envy the quality. He did not hate himself or who he was as a person, he accepted it. For what else was there to do? He wasn't planning to change. Joshua was pretty self-aware.
Which was why, even though he was taking in what Ace was saying about being nervous, Joshua's anger and opinion did not change. He didn't care if Ace was nervous, he was angry. He did not want people to joke about the scarring and he didn't give a damn how they tried to justify it to him. "Well you can stop, because it's not sad." His voice was low and strained as he tried to keep himself from punching something. His temper tended to go into overdrive when one of his buttons was pushed, and people got hurt. He didn't like to hurt his friends but he couldn't help himself. A temper problem was not something that could be switched on and off for someone's convenience, it was a dangerous and often unpredictable thing that struck whether it was wanted or not. "In case you haven't notice, Ace, those scars aren't fresh. If I wanted to fucking talk about them I'd have done it already." He detected the hurt in Ace's voice and his gut wrenched in reaction. If he had been any other person he would have apologised, but he was not, he was Joshua Dale, and so his pride stopped him from making things right again before they went too far. Instead, his gray eyes remained steely and cold. Not looking at Ace, not wanting to see any sort of hurt in his eyes that might waver his conviction, Josh said, "That doesn't mean anything. I don't want to talk about it, so I won't."
He did not mean that their friendship meant nothing to him but he didn't bother specifying this. He was too angry to watch what he was saying and dance on eggshells around anyone. Instead he took the bottle of whiskey back with a slight scowl. "And that's my whiskey you're downing. It's expensive stuff." Normally he would not have cared. Indeed, if the scars had not come up in such a manner he might have sat and allowed Ace to finish the entire bottle without complaint. Having a lot of money for most of his life, he'd built up a sense of carelessness when it came to spending it. He did wonder where Ace got the scar, he hoped that it wasn't anything too serious, but Joshua did not ask. He would not. He was not going to share and so he did not expect any sharing in return. If he was anything, it was at least respectful toward the scars of others. "And we all have our secrets. I like mine to stay that way." His voice was not soft—far from it. He was feeling very little affection toward Ace at the moment. "I don't want anyone to shoulder my pain. I've dealt fine on my own." This was partially true. He had Nell, but he hadn't really asked her to share the burden with him. He dealt with everything in solitude, it was just how he tended to operate. Joshua was just about ready to throw Ace out when the Water seemed to take his own initiative and Josh did not argue this. Instead he just scowled deeper. "I won't want to." Though he let him go, he did hope his friend got home safely. They were still friends, Josh was just irritated.
