Avery puckered his lips, his eyebrows furrowing in careful concentration. He kept his eyes focused, unwavering and every time a little sound went off, whether it was the squeaking of shoes belonging to students who were passing by or the occasional cringe-worthy squeak of a door by a nearby classroom, Avery would let out an annoyed grumble in the back of his throat. He was determined to get this done, no matter how long it took. Staring up at the ceiling, Avery could see the faint reflection of himself in the sky lights. Not being able to handle looking at himself, he burst out laughing, the laughter echoing throughout the empty medical wing. He gently took the pencil off of the bridge of his nose and sat up straight again, stretching his stiff bones.
Needless to say, it was a very slow day. Not that everyday was full of injuries and students complaining of pains, but at least they were somewhat eventful. Today he had only one student come in, but that was because they got a paper cut and wanted a band aid. And it's not like Avery could leave the medical wing either, just in case something big happened, so he was stuck here doing nothing. He sighed, bored, and started sliding across the floor with his computer chair. "Weeee," Avery exclaimed unenthusiastically, his head hung back. How can the life of being a school nurse be so boring?
Continuing sliding across the floor, Avery began to ponder about his choice of being a school nurse. Sure, it wasn't as great as being a doctor in a hospital (like he'd originally planned) but he was happy being at the Academy. The success of trying to be a doctor was too much for Avery to bear alone, and after that, what next? He'd see his patients come and go, some even pass onto the other life. That alone scared him, having people's lives in his hands. At the Academy it wasn't so extreme, some minor injuries and if anything was life threatening they'd be sent to the hospital in Maple Hollow. And plus, he'd be around people just like him and even people he'd known since his own years at the Academy, most of the professors. Avery didn't know whether or not to be ashamed/embarrassed, because that was the one period in his life where he wanted to forget it entirely.
Avery had pretty much covered every inch of the medical wing with his chair-on-wheels. It was a little enjoyable, with the little breeze he got from it, but it got old, fast. Unknown to him, he stopped right in front of the door and stayed there, slumping back on it and closing his eyes. He woke up every morning at 7 for his job and stays in the medical wing until school ends. Avery was usually an energetic person, but with no one around to share that energy he felt mentally drained at the moment. Letting out a yawn, he told himself, "Just a few minutes..." and Avery dozed off into sleep.

It had been a pretty relaxed day, all things considered. The end of the week was always a little less hectic than the beginning and there was a sense of relief knowing that no papers had to be finished in a single night's time or anything of the sort. Checking his phone as he left his last class of the day, Josh frowned at one of the unread text messages as he opened it. Well, that was a shame. He'd planned to meet up with a friend after school but the guy's girlfriend had decided to call him up and he was asking if Josh minded taking a raincheck. He wasn't too offended, texting back an, It's fine, have fun. He didn't use smilies or sound enthusiastic so he might have seemed as if he minded but really, that was just how he texted people. He wasn't overly expressive in reality and so why should he be through text? He also tended to use perfect spelling and grammar out of sheer habit. Josh didn't like doing the whole chat-speak thing. He wasn't big on technology in general, preferring face-to-face conversations wherever possible.
While he really didn't have a problem with his friend cancelling to make plans with the girlfriend instead, he was now faced with the task of finding what to do with himself for the next little while. He could study but he'd planned against doing so and he didn't want to study at the Academy for only half an hour or so before he had to head home, thus interrupting his concentration. He'd prefer to wait until he got home so that he could focus his full attention on his work. He was a very dedicated student, had to be with his aspirations of getting into a difficult MD-PhD program, and he didn't do well with interruptions. He had a flow, a system. I guess I could go see if they need any help in the medical wing. He found that he liked it there. A lot of the staff knew him thanks to his frequent trips down there to help out and ask questions. It was cool to have some friendly faces around. They were some of the more like-minded people to Joshua in the Academy, seeing as he wanted to be a doctor and they were like low-tier doctors. Like he would be when he entered residency.
The medical wing was indeed an entire wing, not too large but big enough to hold several different rooms, including the waiting room and a few rooms stocked with supplies and medications. Students who had medical conditions could opt to work out a deal with the medical wing and their doctors back home to have the Academy keep them supplied just like the pharmacist would usually do, saving any extra trouble. He ignored this room, though, twitching his lips at the receptionist in silent greeting before he went toward some of the rooms to see if anything was going on. Seemed like a whole lot of nothing, actually. He was allowed to wander pretty much freely since they trusted him so much after a few years of hanging around and when he stopped by Doct-Nurse Kael's room he blinked at the sight. Blocking the door was the sleeping form of the man he considered a pretty decent friend. Recovering after a few seconds of being surprised and uncertain, he slipped into the room and picked up a pen.
Poking the man in the side (hard enough to feel but not enough to really hurt) with the writing utensil, he raised his eyebrows and leaned against the wall. "What a terrible doctor you make," he laughed, shaking his head. "People could be dying, Avery—dying!—and you're sitting here snoozing in a chair. Shame." He sighed as if he was legitimately disappointed but after holding the façade for a moment his lips tugged into a fleeting smile. It might not have stayed long but it was there, proving that he was in a decent mood and that he had, indeed, been cracking a joke. It was often hard to tell with Josh. "Such a slow day," he said. "Guessing it's been that way for you, too, huh, if you could manage to doze off in here." Slow days were good in one way and bad in another. They were good because it meant that no one was getting roughed up and injured but bad because boredom was the bane of Josh's existence and so he wasn't the type to wish it on anyone else. "Did you get any action?" He gave a slight chuckle as he realised the double entendre forever a gutter mind, he was but didn't say anything else, allowing Avery a chance to reply first.

Okay, so maybe falling asleep on the job wasn't his smartest move. Heck, if he were caught he'd probably be chewed out and spat onto the floor without any pride left--something that he never saw appealing. Avery had seen the "higher-ups" of the school pretty often, and they were not pleasant. At all. He learned that the hard way on his first day on the job--you know, a little flirting to break the ice. Avery meant no harm in it, as it was his personality and bad a habit of his, but boy was that ice thick. She might as well just rejected him flat. He couldn't stand glares. Especially from woman. Though there are some times where Avery thinks he deserves it. Flirting became too natural for him to the point where he thinks he's just conversing normally but the other person is uncomfortable beyond belief...and that's usually with his patients. Avery's beginning to think that the students at the Academy were dreading to visit him.
Avery flinched as he felt a hard poke on his side, groaning a bit before sluggishly opened his eyes. It took a few seconds for his eyesight to adjust again and when it did, he realized it Josh, a fire graduate who often visited the nurse due to his interest in the medical field. Over time and with Avery's friendly personality, they grew to be decent friends, despite the age difference. Avery pouted and turned over on the chair to face the fire. "Am not," he childishly replied, sticking out his tongue. He was still tired and at Josh's next comment he waved his hand dismissively, yawning slightly. "If people were dying they would've sent them to Maple Hollow," Avery carelessly said, but cracked a lazy smile. He scrambled out of his chair, having more difficulty than he should've (because, heck, the chair had wheels dammit!) and stood next to the towering fire, leaning his forehead on Josh's shoulder. This was a daily occurrence for Avery. Everyday at least one person at the Academy would be molested experience the touchy-feelyness of him. He figured that Josh was used to it because they saw each other pretty often, but he was also pretty sure he wasn't completely comfortable with it. Oh well. "Such a slow day," Avery repeated/groaned, his voice slightly muffled due to his face being directly on Josh. But hey, he was warm and comfy. And a lot taller than himself. Kinda reminded Avery of a teddy bear. "The only other person who's been in here is a student with a paper cut." He pointed his thumb to his desk. "Band aids...why do we have so many band aids..." Avery trailed off, realizing he was probably a lot more tired than he should be, because at this point he was leaning on Josh for support. Avery lifted his head, his chin now resting on the fire's shoulder as he looked up. "Why are you here?" he asked, not questioning him in a bad way. He was curious, so he poked Josh's face.
"Pfft, action." Avery smirked slightly, then nudged Josh with a suggestive look on his face. "I should be asking you that, Mister-I-am-engaged. I'm jealous." Avery winked then laughed at the ridiculousness. But it was sort of true. Here Avery was, 26 (soon turning 27) and here Josh was, college senior and already engaged. Considering Avery's flirtatious personality, he wondered out of pure overconfidence why he didn't have a significant other, especially at his age. Bleh. "But no, no action." He frowned, his cheeks puffing out in mock anger. "Kids these days should get hurt more often. I'm bored, wasting my life away here." Avery flung his arms outwards, indicating his office. Okay, he really didn't mean that (at least the "wasting away his life" part). Avery loved his job at the Academy and even with the choice, he wouldn't quit for the world.

It was almost amusing to see how childish Avery was compared to the Fire graduate, Joshua looking amused as the doctor nurse pouted at him and offered a reply. "Pff, I'll make a better doctor than you, I'm sure." He hoped that his friend understood that this was not a serious claim. Josh took pride in his aspirations and he thought he would make a brilliant doctor, not to toot his own horn or anything, but he liked Avery and didn't think badly of him at all. Even if the guy did creep him out at times. What Avery said about Maple Hollow was true and Josh had known that before he'd opened his mouth to make the joke so he easily shot back, "So you'll let them get to the point of near-death and then send them away? Where is your heart, man? Did the Wizard of Oz steal it for the Tin Man or something?" Maybe he shouldn't have hung around his sister after she'd watched that movie for the millionth time. He'd seen it like most people had but Annabel had reminded him about it by babbling incessantly. His sister would talk to a wall if she thought she had something decent to say. Which was most of the time, really, because his sister seemed to think she was awesome enough that everyone would care about her conversations. He loved her but he'd learned to tune her out on occasion. Did that make him a bad brother? Oops.
He had known Avery for quite a while, enough to be used to his usual antics, but there was still the slight feeling of awkwardness when the man leaned his face on Joshua's shoulder. Rolling with it for the sake of rolling, Joshua said, "Ugh, paper cuts are a bitch." Josh had a scar on his face that was quite noticeable, a deep gash in his palm that could easily be seen if he held his hand a certain way and several other scars but he would not deny the stinging pain of a paper cut. It was more irritating than anything else. "Because this is the medical wing and people need band-aids?" He guessed the question wasn't serious and replied seriously anyway because he could. It was in his personality to reply seriously but not mean things the way that they sounded. He figured Avery was used to his often stoic humour by now. "If you step sideways and face plant it is not my fault," he deadpanned when he noticed that the increased pressure meant that Avery was now literally leaning on him for support. Tired, much? Josh easily kept his stance, being tall and tough enough to support the other guy's weight. Thank goodness. A tumble to the floor would be awkward.
Josh turned his head to look at Avery and it was probably one of the more awkward and up-close positions they could have been in with Avery resting his chin on Josh's shoulder. He didn't say anything, though he did blink when Avery poked his face. This guy. There had been a lot of awkwardness in the beginning before Josh had adapted a little more to Avery's ways. He still wasn't entirely relaxed and comfortable but Josh was comfortable in his sexuality, so the awkwardness was more, 'What is up with him?' than 'Why so close?' This was the same man that would snuggle jokingly with his best guy friend and crack jokes about their being lovers all the time. Comfortably straight was putting it lightly. "Boredom," he said. "So I decided to come and visit my favourite nurse in the world." He rolled his eyes and twitched his lips to show he was joking (though he did consider Avery a good friend). "Had a friend cancel our plans so I'm hanging out here for a while, turns out it's just as slow here as the rest of the place." When not even the medical wing was getting any action, one knew it was a lazy day for everyone.
He grinned devilishly when Avery nudged him, clearly catching on. Hell, he'd realised the innuendo as he was saying it. "Jealous of Nell? Now, don't make me strangle you!" The humoured glint in his eyes suggested the joke. He was actually a pretty jealous guy when it came to his fiancée, it made him bristle to see other guys eyeing her or trying to get close, but he was only kidding with Avery. "First you sleep on the job, now you wish pain on your potential patients? You are a terrible, terrible man." He could say it all with a perfect poker face and sound completely serious and yet for the amount of time he'd known Avery, he did not take it back, assuming that his friend would not think he was that desperate that he'd hang around someone he thought was that bad of a guy.
[omg I adore Avery already xD]

Even though he was nearing 27 years old, Avery had the mindset of a typical teenager. Most likely younger due to his need for affection and his friends mostly being high schoolers than people his own age, but point is he was childish. More so than needed, but no matter what he just couldn't find himself maturing because of...reasons. He was not old! "Not even," Avery said in a sing-song tone trying to make his eyes challenging, but it probably looked as intimidating as new born puppy. Rawrrrr. "I was the apple of my professor's eyes in medical school. People were expecting great things from me." Avery's pride was overflowing as he looked back into the past. He nudged Josh in the side and laughed. "But then I ended up here." Avery then giggled like a little school girl who got away with something rebellious. He was proud of where he ended up, but his professors weren't. It took a lot to convince them, but it was no secret that they were disappointed in him. "I love that movie!" Avery gushed, completely dismissing the first half of Josh's sentence. He could have a nonstop rerun marathon of watching The Wizard of Oz and not get bored at all. That was his childhood right there. Avery needed to find his copy again. He figured it be under the pile of clothes in his apartment, but it was so...troublesome. He couldn't stand cleaning.
Avery could read people's emotions like they were on the back of his hand, so he could sense some awkwardness radiating off Josh. He smirked and just for the hell of it, placed his hand on Josh's opposite shoulder, putting the fire into a somewhat of an embrace. Avery had to bite his lip from laughing, but thankfully Josh wouldn't see it because Avery's face was still planted into his shoulder. "Pfft, she got me all excited for nothing when she came in. My hands were itching to patch up some wounds, not a freakin' paper cut." Avery then laughed, thinking he probably sounded like a sadistic nurse who wished for nothing but pain amongst the students. But hey, he needed to do something throughout the day. It was boring as heck otherwise. "Detail, details," he dismissed. "You're too serious for your own good, live a little," he joked, proceeding to sway his hips a little. Now this would probably be deemed awkward, because Avery pretty much UNINTENTIONALLY grinded against Josh. They were close to begin with, distance wise, so it was inevitable. But still pretty hilarious. Even then Avery couldn't hold back his laughter, and he clutched his stomach due to its hilarity. "Try me, I have fast reflexes," Avery said, moving his hands in a motion that just screamed ninja. At least he thought so.
Avery placed an innocent grin on his face when Josh turned to look at him. They've known each other long enough now to get used to each other. Actually, it never took long for Avery to get close to someone and get comfortable. Too comfortable. Sometimes that worked out in is favor, most of the time...ehhh. It was mostly the adults that didn't appreciate the closeness, whereas the students adapted to it very well. Sure, Avery got some awkward turtles sometimes, but they worked around it. Most of the time. "Psh, I see how it is. I'm your second choice." He sniffled, then returning to his chair-on-wheels and rolled away. "Slow days are the death of me," Avery grumbled over the sound of his rolling. It was quite soothing actually, but after a few seconds he stopped right in front of Josh before jumping off rather clumsily. Avery was never a smooth guy when it came to him physically. But a smooth talker, oh yes. "Hmm, I don't think you'll get much action here," he said, but he quickly turned suggestive and smirked. "Well, not any legal action though." Avery's smirk then turned into silly smile as a sign that it was a joke. Hopefully Josh was already used to it by now without having to be told. Hopefully. Or this will quickly turn into an awkward situation that even Avery couldn't mend.
"Don't make me drown you!" Avery shot back playfully, but backing away for safe measure. Josh was pretty big dude, so uh...yeah. And despite the age difference Josh was just intimidating standing there. "Blah, blah, blah, you nag too much!" Avery complained, covering his ears with his hands. "It's too boring here today!" he then whined, heading over his desk and face planted himself there.

Joshua wondered whether Avery was being serious or joking, unable to tell at that moment. It was not that he doubted the other man's intelligence but since his friend was such a joker a lot of the time he wasn't sure when he made the switch from kidding to serious. Many people had that problem with Josh himself as well and so it was never something he held against a person. It was just force of habit. "Sure you were," he said with sarcasm, joking around so that the response made sense whether Avery was kidding or not. "That's why you're nurse Avery for a bunch of brats, yeah?" He smirked at his friend, gray eyes glittering with the humour. He hoped that Avery realised that he was joking. It would be a little awkward if he didn't, Josh thought. Insulting, even. He never tried to insult the people that he was actually fond of because they were few and far between. "Seriously, though, why didn't you become a doctor?" He was curious and wondered if Avery would tell him. Then, not wanting to pry if his friend didn't want to say anything, he quickly gave him an optional way out with the amended, "I mean, if there is a reason at all." There was a chance that there had been no reason but it was mostly so that Avery could claim there wasn't and avoid the question if he wanted. Josh didn't like making people answer things they were uncomfortable with.
As cold and sadistic as it might have sounded, Joshua knew what it was like to wish that a medical environment got a little bit more action. When he volunteered at the hospital they would sometimes let him handle the cases that did not really require much attention such as minor first aid and the like. Hospitals were meant for more serious illnesses and injuries, especially with how ridiculously full they could get, and so when people turned up with things that didn't need stitches, x-rays, or other immediate care they wanted them out as soon as possible. Josh liked being able to get hands-on experience and so he always felt that brief excitement when he was told to handle something. Like they trusted him enough to give him the responsibilities. "Ahw, poor you, she should have been half dead for your benefit," he said, smirking as he reworded it to showcase how terrible it actually sounded. Wow, that really did sound pretty bad. Ha, he loved Avery anyway. "I think I make a very active and sensible dead man," he said, pinching the flesh on his arm as if he was examining something. "My skin's still got amazing elasticity and everything." He remembered a conversation with Nell about zombies and necrophilia, his lip twitching. No, he wasn't going to bring that up with Avery. Ha.
Alright, so he could handle being leaned on and the arm around his shoulder. It was a bit weird at first but since he'd known Avery for long enough to get used to the fact that this was just in his personality, he had gotten over it. But when Avery swayed his hips and basically grinded against him? Okay, that was awkward. "You need a girlfriend, dude. Or a guy friend. Or both." It was teasing and not meant to be offensive. "I'm off limits, Nell isn't sharing." He hoped that Avery knew he was kidding because if he didn't then it would get very awkward, very fast. "If you were a better doctor you'd be dealing with the dead and dying all the time, think about that. Your lack of success means a lack of injuries. How sad." He said it all as if he were serious but if he had been serious he sure would have made a terrible doctor. He had more compassion than he often let on and he did want to help people even if he did have some rather negative views for a while. His trust issues had complicated things for a time but he felt a lot better about where he was at now. "Hell, I'm engaged. Who said I needed action?" He raised his eyebrows coolly, smirk still in place on his lips. Hey, it wasn't like Avery was stupid, or anyone else for that matter. If he had a girl with a ring on her finger most people were more than capable of jumping to the obvious conclusions.
The word drown sent a subtle chill down his spine but he thankfully did not falter on the surface or give any sign of his brief displeasure. Old memories of his brother pushing him into the lake, water rushing into his lungs, the painful coughing as he choked on it, things he never wanted to relive again. The worry passed quickly and he shot back, "Fine, then I hope Nell strangles you instead." Cause, y'know, if Josh drowned he'd be dead and he didn't imagine that Nell liked the idea of a dead fiancé. "Well, when's your shift over?" he asked. "We could go and do something that doesn't involve sitting around and staring at ceilings. Also I don't think the desk is attracted to you, Avery, it's very unfair to come onto it like that." He said this with a straight face as he leaned against the wall, acting cool and disinterested while on the inside he was smiling and amused.

Avery snapped his fingers, his eyes mischievous. "Precisely," he said simply, a wide smile on his face. He quite liked being at the Academy. It held nostalgia for him, both good and bad, and he really couldn't imagine himself being anywhere but here. Avery was then thrown off guard by Josh's next question, but smiled again to hide his surprise. It was something Avery often thought about so he paused, pursing his lips as if he was thinking real hard. There was no need to go into the deep stuff, so he settled with, "Because I didn't want to." Avery shrugged easily. It was a lot more complicated than that, but due to Avery's guarded personality he'd rather not go into details. "Besides," he started again, his tone light and playful, "If I did become one, you wouldn't have me around anymore. And you know how much you love me," Avery cooed, pinching Josh's cheeks. It wasn't like he was lying to Josh; what he said before about not wanting become a doctor was true, but for many years before that when he was in school Avery did pursue becoming a doctor. But being around his professors, volunteering at local hospitals--he saw what it did to people. The immunity against feeling remorse when losing a patient; he did not want to get used to people dying in his hands. He didn't want to feel the helplessness of not being able to save someone. And he sure as hell did not want to face the family's of the patients he lost. Just the whole idea of being a doctor scared Avery. His job now at the Academy was comfortable; he saw the majority of people daily and all his friends were here. Avery liked where he was in his life, no matter how many people scrutinized him for it. It wasn't like Josh was the first to ask either.
"Yes! Somebody who understands me!" Avery exclaimed, his eyes lighting up with excitement. "I mean c'mon! Where are all the clumsy kids? The aggressive ones? The bullied teens!" he said dramatically, throwing out his hands (and almost smacking Josh in the face) for emphasis. "Things are way too calm here, I have to admit," he said, tilting his head as he remembered his Academy days. Well, as much as could, anyways. For over half of it Avery was a drunk and things got a little, uh, blurry. "Back in my days, this place was crazy busy. Felt bad for the nurse," Avery chuckled, then stopped abruptly. "Ugh, I feel old just for saying that." Avery pouted, then turned to Josh, watching as he pinched his skin. He nodded, making sounds of agreement. "I very much agree," and he reached up to pinch the skin as well, just a little harder. Smirking, he added, his tone suggestive, "So when will I be able to do examination?"
Avery was laughing so hard that tears began forming. After he settled down a bit, he patted Josh's shoulder, taking a step backwards. "Pfft, as if I didn't know that already," he joked. Avery was a flirty guy, that was obvious, but he'd never been in a serious relationship before which was sad because he was in his late 20s. He had the mindset of a teenager; he just didn't see the appeal of settling down at the moment, but it would be nice to have somebody to come home to. Avery pursed his lips. "You should know me by now, I have no limits," he replied, his eyebrows raising as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. "And what ever happened to sharing is caring? Kids these days, having no basic manners," Avery joked. Oh, the irony in that sentence. As if grinding up on someone else's fiance (which was completely by accident!) was good manners. "Oh, yeah, I can just tell you'll make a great doctor Josh," he said sarcastically, humoring his friend. "And I'm happy where I am. Can you imagine someone relying on me when they're on the brink of death?" He shuddered, shaking his head furiously. Avery was super clumsy, so things would just go terribly wrong. "True," Avery admitted, then narrowed his eyes playfully. He walked over to his desk drawer, pulling out a colorful package of condoms and handed it to Josh. Patting him on the shoulder, he sighed as if he was serious and he said, "I'm not supposed to be promoting sexual behavior, but protection is important, use it." Avery stared blankly at Josh for a moment and broke out in a smirk. "Though it'd be cute to see little Josh-es running around. Better name one Avery. Avery is a good name," and he nodded his head.
He gasped over dramatically, then shivered. "Yeesh, you two are a scary couple," Avery laughed. Whoever crossed these two, may God have mercy on them. From his seat, Avery lifted his arm to look at his watch. "In an hour," he answered, his voice muffled and somewhat relieved. And when Josh suggested plans, Avery's head popped up in excitement. "Finally, I've been here since 7am for you damned kids," he joked, and added, "And I beg to differ." Avery outstretched his arms over his desk and lovingly cooed, "You're just jealous of us." He patted the side of his desk and to his surprise, let out a squeak due to it being ancient. It had been here since Avery got here, which was a few years ago, but he'd imagine it'd been here longer. Sighing in defeat, he admitted, "You're right. I do need to find someone."

The simple explanations always worked well with Joshua. He was curious but he tried not to be nosy and so if someone gave him an answer, he accepted it no matter how vague it was. And if they told him to mind his own business, hopefully in a polite manner that would not end up setting off his temper, he did so quite happily. He was secretive himself, at one point becoming so closed off that he could not admit himself as vegetarian without hesitation, and so he understood that it was like to keep yourself hidden from the world. He did not realise that Avery was being guarded at all. Instead, Josh assumed that he really did want this from his life. Not everyone had huge dreams. "Fair enough. Better you treating everyone than someone who did settle for less because they had to." If a failed doctor decided to become a nurse for a bunch of kids, well, that would be concerning, because then they'd probably be bitter about their lack of a higher position and take it out on their patients, whether consciously or subconsciously. He didn't want that. "My adoration is unmatched by any other unfortunate soul in the Academy," he replied seamlessly. The straightness of his face and the absolute lack of laughter in his tone was impressive and he spoke as dryly as if he'd been commenting on the weather. It was all part of the joke, though, because just as he hoped knew that Avery didn't actually love him in that way, Avery knew Josh did not hate him or anything like that.
Josh jerked his head back out of reflex when Avery threw out his hands, narrowly avoiding being smacked across the face. He suppressed an exasperated sigh, so used to the older man's antics by now that they almost didn't phase him. If this had been anyone else, he'd have turned around and punched them in the face. Habit. "Are you advocating bullying?" He let his mouth drop open as if he were astounded, disgusted. "I should report you. That is unacceptable behaviour for a health official." Nah, he was just messing with him. For real, though, it was probably really boring to be stuck in the medical wing all day with nothing to do. To think that Joshua was contemplating a job here! He was excited for medical school and all but he knew he'd want some sort of tie to the Academy. Why not in their medical wing? "Oh, really? Are you sure you weren't the one landing everyone in here?" Jokes, jokes. "Been a slow week. People will be back to injuring themselves for your benefit in no time, don't worry." He patted Avery on the arm in mock sympathy. There had been a time when they were first getting to know one another that Josh had hesitated to touch Avery at all since the other guy was so physical and Josh had been worried that he was, y'know, serious about it, but he'd gotten over that phase a while ago. Avery was... ah, weird, but that was alright. "Dude, my parents are over forty and they bitch less than you. Get over yourself." That might have sounded incredibly rude and caustic but the 'get over yourself' bit had been in jest. Most of the things he'd said to Avery thus far had been joking or else he wouldn't be very friendly at all, would he be?
Well, that was only a little bit creepy, wasn't it? He looked awkward for a moment before he got over it and recovered, rubbing the spot where Avery had pinched him. "I don't know, should it be before or after I deck you in the face?" Alright, so that was the briefest beginning of a warning from Joshua. Though it was voiced lighter than if it had been a real threat, there was an edge to his voice that suggested pinching him was not a good idea. Joshua did not like it when people took their joking too far. He was tough, it wasn't like it had caused any serious pain, but it was enough to be irritating. He got over it after a few seconds, though, and moved on. "I don't swing in your direction," he snorted, though it was good-natured. It was true when he said that he wasn't into other guys but it was joking in a way since he knew Avery wasn't seriously telling him that Nell should share. If he'd thought that any of this was serious he'd been out of the medical wing really damn fast. "God, no. On second thought it's a good thing you're here. If I'm ever on the edge you'd probably push me right fucking over with your unmatched grace. You'd be the first person I'd look at if someone said there was a scalpel sewed into their abdomen." If someone overheard this conversation with how intense Joshua was sounding, what might they think of Avery? Josh really made his friend sound like a bad guy, didn't he? At least there was no one to overhear them joking back and forth. That would be awkward to explain.
He raised an eyebrow at Avery when his friend handed him the package of condoms, then couldn't contain his amusement and laughed out loud, lobbing the package lightly at Avery's forehead. "I'd ask why the hell you had those in your desk but sadly I know all too well." He winked, grinned. Yeah, Josh had been one of those ninth graders, the ones who didn't even pretend that their innocence was intact any more. "We try. Glad to know our efforts are appreciated." Nell, scary. That was a funny thought. Will had been intimidated enough but then, Joshua had never quite understood his vendetta against the Earth girl. Josh? Now he was scary. At least when you got him angry and he punched you in the face. He couldn't help but chuckle when Avery cooed to his desk. This was why he put up with all of the weird crap that Avery pulled, really, because the man's often unintentional sense of humour was pretty great. Josh loved a good laugh every now and then. "Y'know, on second thought, maybe that desk does love you. It's wood certainly seems hard enough. Maybe you need those." He gestured briefly to wherever the condom package had landed. His gray eyes twinkled as he knocked on the surface of the desk. Cheesy but hey, he couldn't resist. His sense of humour was a bit, ah, child unfriendly.

Josh was one of of those people who didn't try to pry into Avery's life, and the nurse was more than thankful for that. He had enough of those people--what more did they need? Avery was living his own life (better now than before), so shouldn't they be living theirs? He never understood why people wanted to butt into other's lives. It was none of their business, and as if Avery would let them in the first place. Despite his adorable face and playful personality, when he wanted to be serious he could be. And that was the scary. Avery smiled cheekily up at Josh and chirped, "Am I finally being appreciated?" Avery placed a hand over his heart as if he was touched. There wasn't a time where he regretted his decision; even when he visited his college and met with his professors. The disappointment in their eyes of course made Avery feel like he honestly did something wrong, but it was his choice. He wasn't going to compromise himself for anybody. "Awwww," Avery cooed, ignoring the straight face and deadpanned voice Josh gave him and gave him a warm hug. Of course, Avery had to slightly tip-toe, but that didn't faze him. "I love you too~" he joked, but quickly broke the hug. It was only a matter of time Avery would've sensed the awkwardness seeping from Josh, so this time he thought he'd spare him. It was an everyday occurrence, it seemed.
"Ah, sadism at its best," Avery said, as if he was looking back on some peaceful memory. He smirked and rolled his eyes at Josh, poking his side lightly. "Being in here is like being in solitary confinement," he groaned, hanging his head. Normally Avery wasn't this whiny (hell, he barely ever whined unless he was joking) but come on. Avery loved his job and everything, but it wasn't the most exciting. There were days where it was super busy and there were others where you can drop a needle and it'd be the loudest thing in the room. And it's not like he can leave his office either. He was literally stuck in that room for the entire day; felt like jail sometimes. "Oops, my cover is blown." Avery covered his mouth as if he said something he should've before breaking out into laughter. It was more like everyone else was sending him there, with the minority that were also bullied. "Hah, you make me sound like some sick sadist," Avery laughed, then quickly rolled his eyes with a smirk on his face. "Which isn't for from the truth, but hey, it's not so extreme," he joked. Okay, maybe that was a bit too much information, but Avery was comfortable about talking about that kind of stuff. He was a bit more shameless than he liked to be. "I can't, just look at me," and he flipped his hair to the side to make a point. After a moment Avery gagged at himself. Sure, he was confident in how he looked, but the narcissism...didn't fit him. At least he thought so. [
Avery was a bit taken aback at Josh's next comment, but he figured that's what he deserved. Pouting, he side stepped away from the fire and let out a dejected, "Okaaaay, I'll stop." Avery was a shameless guy, but he knew when to back off. He wasn't entirely annoying. "Hmph, you're not my type anyways," Avery rebutted, almost childishly. He was a very bi-curious person, but he really didn't know what his type was, considering he flirted with pretty much anything that was standing on a pair of legs. And it's not like he was ever in a serious relationship either--a few flings here and there, but never someone he truly liked. Heck, from what Avery could remember, he never felt any real feelings for anyone. Sigh, the sad life of a 26 year old man. "Oh God, that image," he said, horrified. Avery could just imagine it--Josh lying on one of the beds, half dead, and Avery just tripping over his own two feet, sending (sharp!) surgical tools flying the fire's way. Avery shuddered, shaking is head furiously. "My friend, you speak the truth." Avery clapped his hands as if Josh won an award, but a nagging voice in the back of his mind bothered him a bit. He was the type to over-analyze and takes things out of proportion. He knew Josh was just joking, but the pride Avery had in himself as a doctor suffered a small blow.
He kept a straight face as he watched Josh take the condoms, but his lips twitched into a childish (and immature) smile as the fire lightly poked the package at his forehead. "Kids these days," he said as he shook his head. "Need to learn how to keep it in their pants!" Avery exclaimed as if he was a disappointed parents. HA. As if. He used to be one of those immature kids. "How is Nell doing, anyways?" he asked, a somewhat of a fatherly smile on his face spreading. She was a regular at the medical wing, but not like Josh who came in for volunteering. At times it worried Avery, seeing some of the injuries, but he knew she had Josh. And hell, Josh was a scary dude. "Ooh, kinky," he purred, and he turned his head so he was looking at Josh. "But unfortunately, I like my partners to be human." Avery sat up, slumping in his chair, and patted his desk gently. "Sowwy~"

Though they were joking around, Joshua could honestly say that he'd never looked down on Avery or seen him as inferior. People should be able to follow their heart, their wishes, and if they wanted to pursue a dream that was less than what they might be capable of accomplishing, so be it. It had merely surprised Josh since he was so driven and ambitious, wanting to be the best doctor physician-scientist that he could be. He wanted to find cures, he wanted to make a huge impact so that the medical world might know his name even when he was no longer around. In a way he was afraid of disappearing after death. So when someone was comfortable with an existence that didn't involve having their name carved into history, it took him aback momentarily. He patted Avery on the shoulder jokingly, then said with a more serious tone, "People would be assholes not to appreciate you. You're the one taking care of them all." It would be unfair to take Avery's work for granted. Joshua certainly wouldn't be one to do that. He blinked when Avery hugged him but hugged back anyway, not minding that form of physical contact. His friends hugged him a lot, he'd sort of grown used to it after a while. He snorted when Avery said that he loved him, rolling his eyes. Oh, this guy.
Solitary confinement didn't sound like a fun time. Josh was not afraid of small spaces or of the dark but that didn't mean that the idea of staying alone in a dark room appealed to him. It was scary, actually, to think about that. He was afraid of jail in general, did not want to be seen as a criminal. "Oh, come on, it's not that bad," he said. "Why don't you bring a laptop in here? You'd never be bored. Just make sure to wipe the history once you're done." He lifted his brows and nudged the older man suggestively. Joshua's sense of humour definitely wasn't the most appropriate but that was alright. If he joked around like this it was a sign that he was comfortable enough with a person and trusted that they wouldn't think he was weird or creepy. It wasn't too big of a deal, he supposed, but it was a big enough one to him. "And here I was thinking you were more vanilla than that. For shame. Though I guess I shouldn't be surprised." It was a pretty good thing that there was no one around to hear their conversation. Could Avery get fired for talking this comfortably with a student of the Academy? I'm nearly twenty-one, I'm sure they can suck up and deal, Josh thought to himself nonchalantly. He'd had a gutter mind since he was a lot younger than this and chances were most of the high school students wouldn't care what kinds of conversations him and Avery had. "Look at you? No thanks, I don't want my eyes to start bleeding." He said it with disinterest and picked at his nails to keep up a façade, though he smirked after a moment.
He put up easily enough with Avery's flirting and joking around, attributing it to Avery strangeness, but the pinch on the arm (harmless as it had been) had been a bit of a straw for him. He was a Fire elemental with a temper problem and stupid, unexpected things tended to rile him up. Unfortunately for Avery that happened to be one of them. It was not easy to predict the sorts of things that would push Josh into a reaction. "You're not mine, either," he pointed out, but it wasn't meant to be offensive, he was mostly trying to kid around. It wasn't his fault he didn't sound like he was joking. Well, alright, it was his fault. Joshua was far too serious sometimes with his actions and expressions, his tone, and so a lot of people mistook joking around for reality. He did laugh when Avery mentioned kids 'keeping it in their pants', knowing for a fact that the doctor nurse really did not see it in that way. "She's doing great," Joshua said, and the smile that replaced the smirk was a lot more... genuine. Not that the smirking and laughing had been insincere but there was a different difference when he grinned at the thought of his fiancée. Yeah, he was definitely in love with the girl. "Hopefully your having to ask means you haven't seen her in here recently?" He chuckled but he really did worry over Nell and the amount of injuries she picked up, the fights others picked with her. "What would they even call that? Objectality or something." Instead of bestiality or whatever. He merely looked amused when Avery patted his desk. This man really was a piece of work.

In his line of work, Avery had seen (well, as much as you could see in a school) and experienced all kinds of people. Of course there were the people who accepted him and his weird ways, and others who resented Avery more than anything. None of that really fazed him really, but it was rare to hear the word "thanks." You'd think that'd be the word he heard all the time--but he didn't. Avery wasn't a petty person by any means, but after a while, he really wondered if his work was being taken for granted. Don't get him wrong, he loved his job, but sometimes... "You've just generalized a whole group of people," Avery pointed, a smirk on his lips. Though he liked to think it was true. Hey, he was a passive-aggressive person. "And you're right. I should be paid more for handling all you kids," he laughed, joking. He was already paid a pretty good amount of money for what he was doing--most of the time he was patching up some minor scratches but things did get pretty ugly, especially with all the rivalries the Academy drilled into people. He smiled bitterly, thinking about the past. Oh, those were the days.
"A laptop?" Avery mused it for a second, seriously wondering why he hadn't thought of it in the first placed, then smirked as Josh finished his sentence. "Oh, you know me too well," he purred."But unfortunately, I prefer the real thing than actually watching it, so I'll pass." And Avery nudged him back, lifting his own eyebrows suggestively. The nurse was way too comfortable with Josh. He was sure half of the stuff they talked about would get him fired. "More vanilla than that?" Avery quoted, his face scrunching up in confusion. Ugh, now he really did feel old. "Aww, am I losing the weapon of surprise?" Avery smirked, then added as he put a hand on Josh's shoulder, "I think we know each other too well." It wasn't too unusual, right? Josh was still a student, but he only had one year left before graduating. And it wasn't like their age gap was too big. "Bleeding from the beauty?" Avery nodded hard-headedly, making sounds of agreement. "Yes, yes, you can't help but adore this face of mine." He placed both hands under his chin, framing his face as if it was a flower in bloom. Yes, he made a pretty flower.
Avery snorted when Josh reciprocated his own feelings, a smirk on his face. "Fine!" he shot back childishly, then stood beside Josh, linking his arm around the fire's, then leaned his head against his shoulder. It was sign of Avery's affection, something Josh should be used to by now. He usually had these random fits where he had the urge for human contact--whether it's simply just a pat on the back or what he was doing right now, but Avery noticed that it always happened when he got into "fights" with people. They were mostly playful fights and shouldn't be taken seriously, but Avery just feels the need to establish he was joking. He was an over-analytical kind of guy so some things just offended him (even though he didn't say anything). Because of that, Avery feels like his own words could be picked apart and taken negatively. And besides, affectionate is what keeps the bad feeling away! "Umm, yeah, sure, let's go with that!" Avery was always a bad liar, so he just decided to go along with the truth. He hadn't seen her in the past few days, but the last time he did saw her, she was donning some nasty burns. It seemed that every time she visited him, it only got more serious. "But no worries, she's safe in my hands," he said, grinning cheekily. Oh, yeah...totally safe. Avery scrunched up his nose at Josh's next question, his eyes glimmering in amusement."How would I know?" He doesn't make the moves on his furniture, thank you very much.

He shrugged easily, smirked, obviously not caring too much about the generalization. On Avery's next comment, though, Joshua gave a roll of his eyes. "Yeah 'cause five years makes me such a kid compared to you," he scathed. Harsh as his tone might have sounded it was not meant to be taken literally. He did not mind being referred to as 'young' so long as it was not in a condescending way. Better than being called old and handed a cane, wasn't it? Besides, every year older was another year closer to his goal of becoming a doctor physician-scientist. That was all he had to think to dispel any worries about the loss of his teenage years. Not that he missed them much. He was much happier as a young man than he'd been as a teen. Angst and all that regular bullshit. Really, moody teenage years were as to be expected as puberty for most.
He'd always had a bit of a perverted and twisted sense of humour, possibly the reason that he could handle this back and forth with Avery so well. He was also comfortable in joking around about homosexuality because his certainty when it came to his own preferences meant that he could kid about having others without feeling the need to constantly correct himself. If he ever said 'no homo' in a conversation, it was mostly for a laugh thanks to how irritating the phrase tended to be. "Shame," he said, "since preferring the real thing probably means a whole lot of cold showers for you, hm?" Had he just insinuated that Avery was desperate and partnerless? Yes he had. Now hopefully Avery did not take offence to this because it was not meant to be insulting but Joshua's sense of humour could often raise eyebrows with how close he came to the line between dickishness and humour. Sometimes he crossed that line but his intentions really were good. He wouldn't purposely hurt a friend. Weird as the man was, Josh did consider Avery a friend. "In all seriousness, though, I have to agree. It screams 'fuck me, I'm desperate'." Did anyone have a spare filter for these two? They clearly needed it.
He blinked. Did he not know what that meant? "Vanilla," he repeated. "As in the opposite of kinky." A slang term of course. Joshua did not often discuss the literal sexual habits of his friends. Whenever he made jokes about being either or he was most likely cracking a joke as per usual. He also left his intimacy with Nell out of things. People did not need to know what he did with his girlfriend, thank you very much. "I don't think you ever will," Joshua remarked dryly. Becoming more accustomed to Avery did not mean that Joshua was completely and totally prepared for everything that the man did or was going to do in the future. There was always room for improvement, not that Josh wanted to see any. He had already been sufficiently horrified in the past when he didn't know whether the flirting was serious or kid-on and that had been awkward for him. He wasn't used to guys being all touchy-feely with him and so naturally it had freaked him right out. "We need to see other people," he agreed in a sombre, serious tone.
Avery really was unpredictable. Joshua snorted at his antics, shook his head. "You keep telling yourself that." Nah, he didn't really think that his friend was all that hideous but that was the thing—he didn't see guys like that so it was kind of impossible for him to judge. He could joke around about his judgements though and so that was precisely what he was going to continue doing. He was indeed accustomed to the physical affection and merely took it with an expression so stoic and disinterested that he may as well have been a brick wall. Desensitized? Maybe a bit.
The subject changed to Nell, something that could usually be seen to put the Fire graduate in high spirits. Unfortunately they were discussing her physical health and that was not such a cheerful and happy thought. He wouldn't exactly call her accident prone, but, ah, well, he knew that she had enemies at the Academy. A lot of enemies. He wished she would stick up for herself and fight back a lot more but it was not his place to say. So instead he simply allowed her to continue on as she did and protected her whenever he got the chance. What else could he do? "Somehow I don't trust you," he remarked, his tone arid. He wasn't upset with Avery or anything though. "Well she doesn't come home with missing limbs so I guess she's in good enough hands." Then, with a tone so convincingly serious that he just might have been, he said, "Keep your hands off her though, man, or you will be missing parts. More than just your limbs, if you know what I mean." No, no, he was kidding. Him and Avery were friends and he certainly hoped he could trust his friends not to hit on his fiancée (seriously) while he was not around. Especially not when he was, because that would mean he had some pretty stupid friends.

Avery laughed, used to the harsh (but not meaning to be) tone of the fire. At first the nurse found it to be a little intimidating and more or less scary, but just as Josh had grown used to Avery, Avery got used to Josh. Though there were some times where he wondered if Josh was actually joking or really meaning with what he said. Thank goodness Avery was good at reading emotions, or these two would be disaster while working with each other. "Trust me, five years might not seem a lot, but the time in between is where reality sets in," he said, a hand placed on Josh's shoulder, keeping his tone light and playful. He was speaking out of experience; those five years could shape a person, like it had with Avery. "And if it helps, you in no way look like a kid!" He meant that in the most playful possible. It wasn't an insult. "By the way you act, I could say you're mentally ten years older than me!" As if that was much, though. Avery had the mental age of a five year old whereas Josh was mature and serious. The contrast was rather comical, to be honest. It was a wonder how Josh even got along with the nurse.
Though Avery had very questioning flirtatious-ness towards both women and men alike, he was very much comfortable in his own skin and sexuality, that's why he and Josh got along so well. They understood (maybe too well) when the other was joking. In response to Josh's comment, Avery poked his cheek with his tongue, moving his neck to the side as if he was ready for a fight, though the smirk on his face was evident that he was joking. Oh hell no. Was Josh implying that the nurse had no, ahem, sex life? Pfft! "Oh, you did not just say that!" he said, almost ready to laugh out loud. Okay, so being a school nurse wasn't the best profession out there. But he could get girls. And guys. WHATEVER. "I don't need to discuss my sex life with you," he sniffled, but added for a good measure, "Which is awesome, by the way." Alright, maybe it wasn't, but Avery had no desire to go back to his partying days, and the thought of hooking up with strangers was a little...bleh. Even Avery wouldn't stoop that low. He wanted to wait for that one special person, but uh, due to Avery's personality it seemed it wouldn't happen soon. The thought of settling down kind of scared him, but he needed to suck it up! Especially at his age. "Besides, it gives you viruses," Avery scrunched up his nose, then laughed as he pretty confirmed that he watched *it.* It was a one time thing before when he was a teenager and very lonely.
"Ooooh!" Avery said, his voice dragged out and his lips forming a perfect O. "Then does being chocolate mean you actually are kinky?" he asked, in somewhat of a tone that would remind someone of a stereotypical blond. He scratched his head, but he smirked. "Though you'd probably have to actually experience that before actually judging," he sang, smirking at Josh. Eh, all anyone needed to know was that Avery was very...adventurous. He grinned cheekily at Josh's remark. Avery himself had to agree; half the time, even he didn't know what he would do. He was a 'act first, then think' kind of guy. "At least you'll never get bored~" he pointed out, his cheeky grin still on his face. One of these days, Avery would get slapped, and he'd only have himself to blame. Until that day, he'll just continue being...Avery. "Aww, but I'd miss you~" he cooed, snuggling his head onto Josh's shoulder. "You'd miss me too!"
Avery blinked innocently, not shaken by Josh's reaction. He'd grown accustomed to the way the fire would react him--almost every reacted the same way, except he knew Josh was joking. Besides, it was all in good fun. "Pfft! 'Good enough'? I'm more than enough!" he claimed jokingly. Avery did find it adorable how Josh's eyes were practically lighting up with just the mention of Nell. Without thinking he poked both of Josh's cheeks, a smile of endearment on his face. Oh, young love. Just proof that Josh was a hundred times more mature than Avery. Avery would never be able to stick around, as horrible as it sounded. It was just when he grew up, he had a very bad image of how couples were. He didn't want that in his life, so that's why he developed a somewhat of a player attitude towards love. Avery's constant flirting was proof of it. "Umm. Yeah. I get what you mean," he said, his tone intimidated as he backed away covering his, ahem, manhood. Yeesh, why was Josh so scary! And Avery wouldn't stoop so low to actually hit on someone else's significant other, especially if they were his friends'. He smiled after a moment (somewhat resembling that of a proud father), then put a hand on Josh's shoulder. "She's in good hands." And this time, Avery wasn't referring to himself.

He was not stupid and understood all too well how much could happen in five years but Joshua did not see it as that big of a deal. In his eyes the age gap between him and Avery was not enough to cause concern and he certainly did not see himself as a kid. At the same time, in the spirit of maturity, he was not going to do what his little sister would do. Every time someone doubted her because of her age she had a tendency to cross her arms and whine about it, thus proving the whole 'kid' thing. "Far as the law's concerned, I'm an adult." He smirked as he stressed the word. Oh, the Lonely Island. Ever since Boombox their songs seemed to pop up everywhere for him. "I don't care so much about years. In five years I'll be halfway through medical school." Halfway, because he was going for eight years and not four. Physician-scientists had a tough training regimen.
He was not actually offended by Avery's comment on age and so he easily dropped the subject in terms of debate, though he laughed when Avery said that he was mentally ten years his senior. "Dude, try like... fifteen." Serious face, no smile. The laugh had probably given it away though. Sad day. He liked to trick people into thinking that he was serious sometimes, it gave him strange satisfaction. Did that make him a bad person? Well, he hoped not but it was not like Joshua to spend ages dwelling on it. He didn't really think that Avery lacked any kind of intelligence, though. The man was a doctor for a reason.
There was a wicked glimmer in his eyes when Avery expressed his shock, Joshua smirking and not trying to disguise his words in the least. He was shameless when it came to his sense of humour and if anyone else couldn't handle it, well, that was their problem. He did not try to sugar coat himself for the benefit of others. He'd always liked that Avery rolled with it and didn't get all butt hurt about the joking around. After all, Josh put up with the man 'flirting' all the time. You had to give him credit somewhere. "No, no, we were discussing your lack of a sex life," he corrected. "Get it right." But he was grinning now and he rolled his eyes when Avery pronounced his sex life as being 'awesome'. Hey, maybe it was. Everything Josh said was in jest and he did not actually try to peer into the habits of his friends. That would be pretty creepy, actually, if he tried to figure out which of them had all of the action going on. No thanks. He'd stick with his own and keep his nose out of everyone elses.
He raised an eyebrow. "You've gotten a porn virus." It was said as more of an amused statement than a question. Joshua chuckled and shook his head. Of course. "Never change." Where would the joy in the medical wing be without this guy? He actually almost looked forward to working here for the sake of hanging around Avery more than once in every little while. The guy was a fun time (in small doses).
Avery's comment amused him and he had to take a moment to compose himself before he was able to shrug. "I don't know, actually. Who makes this shit up, anyway?" There was probably a book on the history of slang somewhere. Where it started, how it caught on, how old it was. He considered looking for one. Whenever something snagged his curiosity he was prone to reading up on it whenever possible. He had to focus on his studies primarily, though, so looking up how 'vanilla' had gotten started and if 'chocolate' was a counterpart was not a priority. "I'd hate to think of what strawberry would stand for. Or neopolitan." Now he was going on about ice cream flavours, oh dear. He frowned for a moment. "Great, now I want ice cream. Maybe I'll go to the parlour later on." He loved that ice cream parlour for being open year round. He could get his mint chocolate chip fix in the middle of the winter and no one could tell him he was wrong. It was open for a reason.
Though he joked as if he meant otherwise, Joshua did believe that things would be weird without Avery around. He did not think he'd like to cut any of his friends out of his life. They were all there for a reason and he was glad that he'd finally built up a sort of a circle for himself over the years. It had been slow-growing but it had happened and now he was here. "I would be better off without you. I think it's time to make a clean break." He stepped away from Avery with a melodramatic sigh as if he was sad about leaving. Man, he loved carrying out jokes as if he meant them.
Sometimes he underestimated how intimidating he could actually be when he joked around or said something in a serious tone. He meant his comment in a way, he didn't like people hitting on Nell because of his own jealousy issues, but he hadn't actually thought that Avery would do it. Instead of telling Avery that they were all good, he narrowed his eyes at him and scowled as if contemplating a strangulation. Really, how did some of his friends avoid cardiac arrest around him? Then he lightened up as if the events of the past minute or so had not actually happened. He was kind of touched in a strange sense of the word when Avery asserted that Josh took good care of Nell, his lip twitching into a smile that for once was actually genuine instead of comically serious. "Yeah. Yeah, she is." Leaning against the desk, he asked, "Speaking of injuries, got any interesting ones this week? I mean I know today was an absolute bore but surely the whole week wasn't bad?" Oh, medical wing stories. They could make a comedy on it or something.

"Okay, okay, you're an adult~" Probably more of an adult Avery would ever be. It was better not to argue about such a petty thing like age because what would age be without the maturity and wisdom? Surely that wasn't something Avery had. It was just a number, but that number could've gone through a lot in it lifetime. "Growing up so fast~" he sniffled tearfully, then suddenly the simple math in his head did it by itself, and he scrunched his nose. "That would mean you'd be my age...and I'd be in my thirties..." Okay, maybe this wasn't what Josh's point was, but Avery had a knack of going off track in conversations. He had the attention span of a squirrel. "I think twenty should do it," he said, his face just as serious, though it cracked just a little when Josh laughed. Avery really couldn't stay serious--it was like, programmed in his blood not to. Besides, he found poker faces to be rather...comical, to be honest. He'd end up trying to make a straight face as well, but end up laughing at how ridiculous he looked as he tried not to burst out laughing. And besides, the way he and Josh would joke around pretty much thrived when Josh acted serious. Granted, it was pretty scary sometimes, but it was all in good fun.
Avery narrowed his eyes at Josh, though the smirk on his face really wouldn't go away. Ah, seriously. Thought Avery really wasn't normal, he still had the basic pride of being a guy. And the sex part played a big role in it. When was the last time Avery hooked up with someone? Or at least brought someone back to his apartment. Huh. Maybe Josh had a point, but that didn't make Avery feel at all better about his lack of a sex life, just as Josh had said it was. "Pfft, hah, whatever!" he spluttered out pretty much anything at this point. What could he say to that? In very rare moments like these, Avery was flustered, and he narrowed his eyes at Josh again. "Fine! I don't have a sex life!" he admitted, rather loudly at that, and as it echoed slightly he broke out into laughter. "And why are we discussing this so deeply? Would you like to change that?" Avery asked, smirking, but even he couldn't handle that and his whole body cringed at the thought of it. Don't get him wrong, he was sure Josh was just fine in *that* department, but just...no! "Just once," Avery miffed, blinking innocently. No, really, just once! As a teenager, his hormones were...raging. Yes, that's the word. And all the drunkenness really didn't help. "Not even for the world~" And Avery grinned cheekily at Josh. He liked the way he was, and if someone didn't approve, well, then screw them.
"You tell me!" Avery exclaimed, shrugging himself. He really couldn't keep up with some of the lingo the students here at the Academy came up with. Most of it was rather comical and had to be explained to Avery, which was a hilarious image in itself. He'd have groups of students at a time trying to explain to him the meaning of certain phrases. He understood and enjoyed some of them, but others...really? He couldn't understand youth these days. "What ever happened to clean and simple, straight to the point?" he asked dramatically, once again flinging his arms in the air. He didn't like the thought of deciphering some foreign language spoken by teenagers just to understand a simple sentence. "That would be some kinky shit," he laughed, scrunching up his nose at that thought. "Mmm, ice cream~" Avery then pouted. He was holed up in this place for about a good hour before he could leave, but then again, he was pretty exhausted and would probably head straight home.
Avery's eyes widened, his eyes a bit too comical, when Josh proclaimed that they needed to "break it off." Umm, no, they did not, even though he knew he was joking. Just the thought sent shivers down his spine; Avery hated the thought of losing a friend. "Nuuuu~ I refuse~!" And Avery took another big step towards Josh and wrapped his arm around his tightly.
He blinked blankly at Josh as he continued to stare him down. Avery, trying his best to smile, playfully and gently poked Josh's shoulder. "You're scary, you know that?" Avery shot out, poking Josh again as if he was a ticking bomb ready to blow up. "Hmm, injuries..." Avery tilted his head for a moment, contemplating as his made went over each patient. A light bulb set off, and now he was eagerly explaining to Josh, "A water came in with rocks literally jammed into his calf~" It was pretty gruesome but the water was surprisingly light-hearted about it. How he got those injuries? Well, Avery really didn't want to know.
