Nell couldn't say she'd gotten into any big trouble since being accused of killing the Thunder leader, Cynthia, two years ago. That incident had half of the Academy coming after her, and it didn't bring back fond memories. Most days had been spent recovering from injuries. She hadn't gone to the Medical Wing because that was an unsafe place during war. An entire war had been started because of false accusations. It ended with an awkward peace meeting with the Fire leader, then completely quelled once the Thunder leader backed down. That was when she had first come to the Academy, the first few months as a matter of fact.
Since then, it had become what usually happened to Earth students. She never fought back. She never touched anyone who touched her. There had been trouble with the Fire leaders, and she believed she'd made herself a permanent enemy of Altair, even though she was pretty sure the girl feared her fiance. And should fear Lark, ever since the Fire traitor found out about the fight between Nell and the Fire leaders. Or rather, the "watch Nell's back as she hauls ass" encounter. At least that time she'd defended herself. She went to the Medical Wing after a teacher broke it up in the mess hall, laid up with serious burns.
And today was shaping up to be a Medical Wing kind of day. Nell didn't make enemies, and if she did she tried not to keep them, but her brother was someone who had moved quite high up on the people she wanted to leave her alone list. Her version of an enemy list, actually. Lately he was feeling very pompous after getting a vicarious one-up on Josh now that Bryce was living with him. And Nell, of course. "So how've you been lately, loser," he asked her when he found his sister in the library, poking her in the side and sending an electric current through his touch. She flinched, clutching at the book she'd taken off the shelf before turning to glare at Rafael. She looked him up and down before saying, "Better than you, apparently. Who dressed you this morning, Ru Paul?" It was not in her nature to dish out insults, but it was her equivalent of a porcupine's needles, a warning.
He smirked, taking the book from her and flipping through it. "It was just dark when I woke up. You know, after fucking Angela's brains out." With magnificent speed, she stepped forward and snatched the book from him, wishing she could beat him over the head with it. But she had more control. Rafael, apparently, did not. "I guess you haven't done your whole girlfriend intervention thing yet. What's keeping ya?" She refused to take the bait, to be a part of this game. A glare was sufficient for now. "Oh, so you're gonna be quiet now? That's a new game." She wanted to groan out in frustration, but just turned back to the shelf. He wanted her attention, however, and grabbed hold of her arm, sending a startlingly powerful shock through her system. Nell gasped, stepping away. However, still with his hand on her wrist, he put his other on her waist, another shock there.
"C'mon, Nell, talk to me," he told her, almost mournful with his tone. The boy enjoyed this too much and she tried to gain control over herself. "You disgust me," she said, and his eyes narrowed. "Your hair's stupid, too." There was a soft humming noise in her ears, and the pain felt like a thousand needles in her skin at once. And she thought getting her tattoo had been bad. Rafael finally let her go, but not without pushing her first. "And I thought that you'd have some kind things to say to me. Might want to wipe away those tears." They had purely been from the pain, and she did not wipe her face until he strutted away like a freaking peacock. As she brushed the back of her hand against her cheek, she noticed the burn on her arm before pushing her sleeve up more. Her skin was blackened, an electrical burn. And it was hideous.
She didn't like going to the Medical Wing because she hated being a patient, but she knew when she needed it. Even so, she took her time to check out the book she wanted and tuck it into her bag before heading down the hallways. She couldn't feel the areas he'd touch her, and when there was a pulse of feeling in her body, it radiated painfully. Nell feared he might have done some internal damage, fucked up her neurons or friend an organ. She was glad that she actually spoke her mind for once, that she'd told him just what she thought of him. He was worse than swine. She walked into the Medical Wing, but noticed that Avery wasn't around.
In the reception area, she noticed the table and dropped her bag to the floor before taking said table and moving it in front of one of the chairs. She rolled her sleeves up so movement wouldn't hurt her injury so much before sitting herself down and taking the deck of cards she had out of her bag. Instead of setting up a game of solitaire, she placed two of them against each other and started on a house of cards, managing to get to three stories in record time. She liked building them, but rarely ever found the chance to anymore. Life had become so busy and full of electrical burns.

Avery really wasn't one of those guys who'd get involved in any fights. Especially since he was one of the faculty members and he had higher authority--getting involved with some petty students' squabbles never really interested him; rather, Avery often ignored them because it wasn't any of his business. But when the students go out of their way to gang up on some poor, innocent earth who was just mind their own business...ooh, that got his blood boiling.
So here's the story. Like every other break Avery had, he'd take a stroll through the Academy, you know, get some fresh air, because everyone knew how the medical wing smelled like--antiseptic and cleaning products--and he liked cold and snowy days. The air was extra fresh and crisp on days like these, and it was just nice to get out of his office once and a while because he felt like he was in solitary confinement being in there. It was also enjoyable to meet and see all the students in their own natural habitat (yes, Avery often thought of them as animals; cute, furry little animals), so he decided to head off into the courtyard and sit by the fountain; it was where most of the students hung out by. Avery was just minding his own business, creating designs in the snow with his foot, when he saw a few thunders and fires by one of the benches, but that wasn't what bother Avery. It was the fact that they were surrounding an earth that often frequented his office due to being bullied. Now, Avery really wasn't the one to get involved in fights, but when he heard the words that were said and the advancing heat and electricity in the air, he had to step in. The earth was literally only a ninth grader and a girl for God's sakes! It was no doubt she looked scared, but Avery was too, when he saw the look on the fires' and thunders' faces. You see, Avery had the reputation of being too friendly and not being serious--he wasn't a violent person either, so it was obvious he was going to be taken advantage of...and that's exactly what happened.
Avery wasn't badly hurt. Not to the point where he could barely stand or something--all that really happened was he was pushed roughly. That in itself wasn't so bad, but...Avery was a clumsy person, so instead of catching himself, he ended up face planting into the snow. Which hurt by the way. Wasn't snow supposed to be soft and fluffy? Not hard and spiky? Anyways, thankfully Avery got out of there (with the earth student safe and sound) with some cuts and bruises on his face. What was this, the second time Avery face planted in the courtyard? Ugh, how embarrassing, by students nonetheless! He sighed, wiping his lips with his thumb, hissing in pain when he realized he had a cut there. He probably look like a mess right about now; why did he have to be so clumsy? His physical coordination in no way matched his smooth talking.
Heading back to his office (because like hell did he feel like taking another stroll with those thugs still out there!) Avery realized he was late. Groaning, he quickened his pace but he wasn't really worried. Things were slow at the medical wing, so he figured it was alright if he was a little late. That is, unless a "high-up" was waiting outside his office...well, then, Avery would have a lot of explaining to do. However, when he reached his office, Avery saw the figure of a person, and upon getting closer, Avery realized it was Nell, one of his regulars. He smiled, laughing slightly as he realized she was building a house of cards. Smirking, Avery slowed down his steps to the point where he was nearly silent to sneak up on her, and just as he was about to grab her shoulders to scare her, Avery saw the black burn on Nell's exposed arm. "Whoa, whoa, whoa. What happened Nell?!" he exclaimed, his voice loud and echoing in the reception area. Her skin was blackened by what he assumed to be a burn and he sucked in his breath as he examined it.

So absorbed in her own little world, she did not notice Avery creep up on her. She could be more observant, but as it were, she was enjoying stacking up her cards in the house, imagining herself as a carpenter sending people off to the jobs they needed to do. It required a lot of focus so that it did not fall apart, because the slightest mistake could send all the cards fluttering down and then it would become just a mess to clean up. Some of her friends had blown it down after threatening to do so like the big bag wolf, and she did not know that it was going to happen again as she stuck her tongue out between her lips and focused on the house that would be better off described as a tower of some sort. She was just as meticulous as a neurosurgeon in the OR.
She straightened when she heard Avery's voice, and for how quiet it had been, he could have been a fire engine siren. Nell did not breathe for a moment, and drew her arms back slowly, lifting them up as she studied the structure from her position. "Mr. Avery, please don't make any sudden movements," she advised slowly, holding her hands out as if pure air could stop it from toppling over. It looked like it would stay stable, and she put the card down on the table, and smiled up at Avery. He did not seem his usual cheery self right now with how concerned he must have been, and she would have liked to address why he looked like he'd been rolling around in the snow if he hadn't first addressed her injury. A doctor's eyes, she supposed. Or a nurse's. She almost smiled at that.
The Earth girl looked down at it as if just noticing it being there and scrunched up her nose before sighing. "Thunder student happened," she said, tilting her head. It was only natural for her to withhold details. Nell did not enjoy being secretive, she did not even do it consciously. She had been raised not to tell people anything, both parents had instilled that value in her. "There's also a burn on my waist." The girl shrugged, as if it was nothing, her usual behavior upon arriving in the medical wing. Being a pacifist, she was a good target for bullying. But she didn't consider it bullying, considering it did not bother her that way. "Probably trying to practice for their classes like a good student," she said wryly, adding in a dose of humor for good measure.
She picked up the card again and took the other one so that she could stack them together on top of the others. "The real question," she started as she leaned in and made sure her breath did not hit the structure, "Is what you were up to, sir. Looks like you had a field day in the snow." She stopped for a moment, before pulling her hands back and smiling. Perfect. Then, she blinked her curious eyes up at Avery. "Having fun with the winter?" The snow was great to play in. She'd discovered the majesty of snow angels some time back. Snowball fights, as well. The adventures one could have made up for the temperatures. Nell did not enjoy how weak the snow made her powers, but she wouldn't ever seriously voice that she was cold. No one liked a whiner.

Though Avery was more than concerned when he saw Nell's burn marks, he froze when she told him to. "Okay...Ms. Nell...?" He slowly directed his attention toward the card house and his face lit up in pure amusement. Only Nell would. He smiled back at her as she looked up at him and took a seat next to her, briefly distracted. "Is this what you've been doing while you were waiting for me?" he asked, amused. He would not have the patience to build one of these; he wouldn't even get past building the first floor, knowing him. Avery was a clumsy person, and even though he was very patient, he had a feeling the card house would be destroyed in pure frustation.
Avery sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. The way Nell talked about her injuries was really making him worried. It was like she brushed them off as if it was a regular thing--and Avery didn't like that at all. Especially when she came into his office often. Avery gently took her hand in his, examining the burn marks, but completely froze when she said she had another one. "If there's more to the story, feel free to tell me. 'Cause you know, I'm not at all totally concerned," he said sarcastically, glancing up to catch Nell's gaze. He was initially not in a very good mood and seeing these injuries on Nell did not help him at all, though he did let out a small laugh at her joke. It was wrong and sick, and he smiled wryly just like Nell's tone. "Practicing? That's a sick way of putting it," he pointed out, Avery's eyes literally glued to Nell's burns. Already in his head he was wondering how on earth someone would want to this to her.
Avery watched her as she picked up another card, guessing they could prolong this a little more. From what he could tell it did no other damage then burning the skin, but obviously he wondered how much Nell was keeping in; he'd be literally crying in fetal position due to the pain. Avery looked down at his clothes, and sure enough, he was covered in snow. He closed his eyes, shaking his head at himself before breaking put into a smile. "Well, it seems like we're both havng bad luck with thunders," he started, his mind flashing back bitterly to the thunder who shoved him. He was a tall dude, and what could Avery have done? It all happened to fast that he really didn't know how to react. "And I'm having an amazing time. Just love how little kids throw ice at me when I'm walking down the streets," he joked, but seriously, he hated the snow. A little kid nearly knocked him out with a snowball that contained actual ice! Ugh. Avery could deal with the cold weather, but hated the snow. HATED. IT.
"C'mon, Nell, I need to patch you up," he said as he took Nell by the uninjured arm. "You can finish up your card house later~" Avery cooed cheerfully, smiling at her. He couldn't stay serious forever (you get wrinkles from that!) and besides, it wouldn't be fair to Nell if he stayed all sulky and angry that he probably could've scarred his face, but Avery was no doubt angry at the thunder who did this to her. He saw a lot of things like this everyday, but that didn't mean he got used to it. And so he sat Nell down on a stool, giving her a playful stern look to warn her that he was watching her, and if she tried to escape to go finish her house of cards... Avery opened up his desk drawer, getting out a first aid kit and some lollipops he had stashed. "Here~" he offered, giving her a fistful of lollipops. "This oughta keep you preoccupied!"

Nell looked at her creation with revelry, as if she had just recreated the Angkor Wat or the Hagia Sophia. It was merely a “building” of cards stacked up together, apparently held together by sheer luck with how precarious it was. She always felt bad when she had to raze her creations, like how she had to watch the flowers she grew eventually die. ”Yep, yep,” she said. ”I was sitting here and thought, Avery would just love to see a wonderful piece of architecture to brighten up his day. And here were are. It's not quite Barbie's dream house. Actually, it's probably uninhabitable. But...” She waved her fingers, still afraid that the slightest movement would topple it. That was supposed to be her grand gesture, her unveiling of the beautious home she had made for...dust bunnies, that was probably the only thing that could possible take up space.
She looked up, watching as Avery rubbed the back of his neck, clearly bothered. And she didn't know why. Obliviousness was a permanent state of mind. Then he voiced his thoughts, and the smile still danced on her lips, eternally amused with the man before her. ”You always worry, it's your job.” He was always carefree, but he wouldn't have taken the position he had if he did not fret about people and their wellbeing. She admired him for that. Nell tried not to look away when she said, ”You know how it is as a student. Tensions tend to run high.” The war had sizzled and faded, but feelings of animosity between the elements would never disappear. She got caught up in those tensions even when she didn't want to. All she wanted was everyone to get along and rainbows and puppies and gardens full of big flowers. Her teeth dug into her bottom lip before she said, ”It is. Kind of always like that, I suppose.” She cast him a smile that was free of pain that might have been experienced from the injury. Avery had enough on his plate with all the people coming in here with their own injuries and ailments, she did not want to add more to his plate.
She turned her attention from the cards when he studied his appearance, her brown eyes wide and curious. Her head tilted at his comment, a question asked without any verbal cues. Thunders could be provoked easily, tepending on their moods. They were often irritable enough. The small smile found its way back to her lips at his tone, but there was a more pressing issue than humor at that moment. She didn't even care to think of the double standard she had with herself and her own injuries when it came to Avery. ”Did they seriously throw ice at you?” Snowball fights, fun and exhilerating. Ice balls? Terrifying and possibly one of the horsemen of the apocalypse. ”Are you sure you're all right? No bleeding or anything, I hope...” She had never been hit with ice, so she could not be sure, but the repurcussions did not seem like they would be fun.
She mock pouted when he took her arm, and she moved slowly and steadily to make sure that she did not collapse the structure she'd been focused on in his absence. ”Okay,” she said with a sigh when he smiled his stunning, 'ohmygod, is that the sun or daggers?' smile at her. She perched herself on the stool, turning around in it after looking slyly at Avery. Behave herself? Well, she could try. But keeping still did not come easy to her. Nell stopped rotating in circles when he approached her with lollipops, and a small gasp came from her lips. ”Candy,” she chirped, taking them, and it was her bright idea to open them all and put them in her mouth at the same time. She could barely breathe, but she took them out and asked, ”Do I need to lift my shirt up for you?” The burn there had a lovely purple-black hue, and it throbbed at odd intervals to remind her of its presence on her skin.

Avery was amazed at how Nell looked unfazed in this situation. Any other person would be panicking and clinging onto him in horror...but nope, that was not Nell, and he laughed at her explanation. "I'm honored," he laughed, placing a hand on his chest as if he was touched. Really, it wasn't everyday he saw an injured patient making house of cards as they waited for him. "Even if it was inhabitable, I don't think I'd live in it~" Avery joked. He had quite a fear of heights, and besides, he'd probably be more cautious and scared of what he ate, fearing that one day he'd just enter and everything would topple over due to his weight. Avery sighed, his chin now resting on his propped up hand, as he continued to watch Nell's...uh, performance. If only he could keep her in a glass dome and watch her for the whole day, but then again, Josh would go hunting him down. Yikes.
"Yeah, and because of you kids I'm starting to get worry lines," Avery joked, poking his own forehead with a pout. That wasn't even the worst part--moreover, he saw most of his patients on a daily basis, seeing them with their friends, teachers, and enemies in the halls or right here in this office. Avery grew...attached, and that sort of feeling shouldn't be allowed in this kind of work, because there are times where they don't get sent here; they're sent to the hospital in Maple Hollow. Ever since he got here, Avery has been feeling as if he was a father or something--an unfamiliar, yet warm kind of feeling. "I do, that's why I worry!" he said, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. Avery flung out his arms for good measure. "We need to like, put every single one of you in hamster balls or something." He nodded seriously at the idea. Oh, how cute. He could only imagine the chaos that would ensure though...and how would they fit through the doors? Oh well. Not his problem. "Well, I'd wish it stopped," Avery sighed, but he smiled back at Nell, though it was noticeably strained. He poked her cheek, and cooed, "You don't always have to act so strong, y'know~" Avery gave her a half smile. "'Cause I'm always here with open arms if you want to cry." And he did just that, Avery's eyes closed and a wistful smile on his face. Though he did peek open one of his eyes to see if Josh was around. Um, awkward. And he really couldn't forget the menacing look he gave the nurse the last time they talked about Nell. It was all in good fun, but Josh was scary.
He laughed bitterly as Nell tilted her head at him, an unspoken question. "Tried to play Superman," Avery explained with his nose scrunched up. "But, I was outnumbered and well, you know how thunders can get~" Sighing, he patted his face softly to work out the damage. Oh, if his face was scarred..."Kids hate me." His tone was flat and the look on his face was rather comical. He'd literally just be walking down Maple Hollow, going to get some coffee or something, when BAM. A hunk of ice would fly out of nowhere and nearly miss him. He will never forget the evil giggles. "Pfft, I'm fine! I'm indestructible!" Okay, now he was just throwing out random stuff. Avery cheekily grinned, then poked Nell on the nose. "Besides, I don't think my "injuries" can compare~"
Avery rolled his eyes as she pouted at him, and just to spite her, he pouted to, though his was more exaggerated. He'll forever win in the childish department. Laughing at her sly look, Avery put both hands on his hips (somewhat resembling a strict mother father, as if challenging her to do something. Maybe that wasn't the smartest idea, because these days students were surprising Avery left and right with their unexpected antics. Plus, he was easily scared surprised, so he kept his eyes on Nell, walking backwards as he went to go get the supplies needed. Granted, that probably wasn't the smartest idea, as he bumped into his wooden desk and nearly tripped. Oh yeah, smooth. "If you start choking I'm not held accountable!" he laughed, his face twisting in amusement at the sight of Nell with all lollipops shoved into her mouth. "Yup~!" Avery snapped on his rubber gloves, in the process removing his snow covered lab coat, and removed some supplies from the first aid kit.

Her gaze entertained, it was hard to believe that she was here for any sort of injury. Avery had cheered her right up. She could forget about Rafael and his...she would just call them issues until she figured out what the hell was wrong with his brain. "You act so old, Avito, you don't even have any grays!" He has super nice hair, though, and Nell really wanted to touch it. She liked hair a little too much, but that wasn't a bad thing at all. She tried her best not to laugh when he had the idea of hamster balls, imagining the clutter in the corridors if they were all rolling around. It was difficult not to let her claustrophobia take over in that moment. "Now, now, you're starting to sound like a mad scientist." One of those evil villains that planed to use the human race as an experiment. However, she did agree with wanting it to stop. Of course she wanted it to stop, she would rather not have any sort of conflict in her life. The prospect of that happening was very unlikely.
She puffed out her cheeks when he poked one, looking more like a chipmunk then ever. Her expression looked serious enough that it became comical. Nell blew out air to respond to him. "You don't always have to be so cute," she said as she pinched his cheeks. Even though she was using diversion tactics, she really did think of him as adorable, even though he was way older than her. Okay, not that much older. She was nineteen, and sometimes it was still hard to believe she was an adult. Maybe because she had been an adult for so long already, with all the responsibilities and concerns. The graduate giggled as she watched him close his eyes dreamily, figuring that he lived in his own Avery world, with pink clouds and candy and plenty of patients to cling to. "I'll keep that in mind, but I do have standards for my shoulders." She held up her finger, using her good arm, almost wincing as the pain reminded her that she did have an injury on the left. "Yours must be two-hundred count Egyptian cotton, very pliant and supple." Really, the only (living) person to have ever seen her cry was Josh, and she would like to keep it that way. And she wasn't one to seek others for support, no matter how much she loved her family.
Her lips twitched into a soft smile when he said he wanted to play a hero and ended up outnumbered. She lifted an eyebrow, said, "Kids don't hate you, now. I like you! Well, I'm not so much a kid, but I'm close enough!" She had the height to back her up in that argument. Still no signs of growing any taller, so she figured that her growth spurt when she was twelve would be the last one. It made her sad to think that. Nell rolled her eyes at him, and stuck out her foot, nudging his leg with it. "You ever watch Scrubs? The theme song? 'I know, I'm not Superman.'" Then she had to sing the sound effects before explaining, "You ain't no superman, vato." But she understood the do-gooder mentality. They shared that, a sort of kinship. "Do I have to play nurse now?" she asked with an impudent look on her face, pursing her lips.
The silent exchange made her almost break out in laughter, but she was raised by a Fuentes, the master of everything controlled and emotionless. But then he backed away without looking way. Nell watched the nurse with a curious look as he backed away, still watching her like he was afraid she would combust spontaneously. She furrowed her eyebrows when he bumped into the desk, taking the lollipops out of her mouth. "What are you doing? You all right?" And he took care of other people! Jeez. She put the lollipops back in her mouth and spoke around them. "I' no goan choke, tank you." That was completely coherent. She nodded when he told her, hesitating a moment. The scar. It had faded a little bit now, it would continue to fade over time, but she still hated thinking about it and the fact the word whore could still be made out next to her navel. Sucking it up, she lifted her shirt, and looked down at the black mark. "Urgh, I 'ook 'ike tarmac," she said around the lollipops. It was certainly not an attractive look for her.

Avery scoffed. "Is that supposed to be a compliment?" He took pride in his hair and thankfully he had no grey hairs or else he'd cry. But the acting old part? Oh hell no. He did not. He was a child! Mentally five years old. No way near an old man. Avery would shave his own hair when that day came. "I prefer 'handsome genius,' thank you very much." Though he did like the sound of being a mad scientist--but he really had nothing to be 'mad' about. Except for that thunder who shoved him and made him face plant onto the ground--but that's it. But they had to admit, the hamster ball idea was cute. Avery already saw all of them as cute little creatures, the hamster ball was a nice touch. "That's a lot of plastic," he said after a moment, considering how many students there were at the Academy. And they'd probably have to make ones for the faculty members as well, because no one wanted a flat pancake teaching the classes. Hmm. Avery's imagination was really something.
The nurse laughed at Nell's expression, somewhat resembling an angry porcupine or something. An adorable one at that. "It's programmed into me. It's a part of my charm~" And his face scrunched up as Nell pinched his cheeks. He treated his patients like this on a daily basis, so it was interesting, to say the least, to get a taste of his own medicine. It was sweet. Very, very sweet, and he cheekily grinned at the earth. Nell was also one of the few students who dealt with Avery calmly, as if they had been dealing with him for their whole lives. And there were just...others. Who dealt with him, but not really playing along with the nurse's crazy antics. Where was the fun in that? "Standards?" he repeated, scrunching up his nose, though his face quickly turned into amusement at her "standards." Avery pouted, his shoulders slumping noticeably, and solemnly said, "Awww, darn. But if it helps, you reach my standards~!" And Avery made a little heart with his hands. Ugh, how cheesy. But it made the ladies go d'awww.
Avery laughed. Oh, Nell. Though he couldn't deny what she said was true. She was short. "I beg to differ!" he said dramatically, his mind once again flashing to the group of kids who surrounded him yesterday with snowballs in their hands. They're just playing, they said. They like you, they said. It was an accident, they said. I'LL PAY FOR YOUR MEDICAL BILLS, they said. Whatever. He pinched Nell's cheeks, a fatherly endearment in his eyes. "And don't tell Josh, but I like you too!" Avery liked the way his face was arranged right now. He was boot-ee-ful. "You...are amusing. Can I keep you?" he said after sang some sound effects. Really, this girl. Someone do some black magic so he can keep her a bunny or something. "I have the outfit and everything~!" And he was not hinting at foreplay, mind you, you pervert.
Yeesh! Was it like Josh's stoic nature brushed off on everybody or something? Because when Nell's expressionless face stared back at him, the image of Josh in a wig flashed in his mind again. "No~" he admitted honestly, pouting. "I think I hit my funny bone." Avery scrunched up his nose, rubbing his elbow as painful laughter bubbled on his lips. He really hated hitting his funny bone--it was not funny in the least. "This is the last time I'm giving you lollipops," he warned, a somewhat of a stern look on his face. But Avery wasn't the kind to be serious, so he broke out into a grin, tossing a towel her way. "Don't drool on my floor please."
It took a while for Avery to digest as he looked at the burn mark on Nell's side. He briefly looked up at her then back down the burn, before sighing and plopping down on his own stool. "Have you told Josh?" He entrusted the fire to take care of Nell, and in turn, send whoever did this to her to him. Avery lingered on his this thought when he applied some antibiotic ointment on the burn, being extra careful not to do anymore damage.

Her eyes were gloriously wide at his question. Did she make it sound bad! If she had, she honestly didn't mean it. "I love your hair!" she cooed. "I don't know if it's offensive or not to say this, but I love Asian hair. I wish I was Asian..." She had told Bastian this, since he was Asian too, and she seemed to have surrounded herself with Asians whose hair she could be jealous of. How did they get it so silky and nice? And girls could do anything with it! This hair thing might have been becoming a little bit of a problem for her. As long as it didn't cause problems for anyone, she supposed it was all right. "Handsome genius, then. You should get people to call you that instead of Nurse Avery. Then you'd be Handsome Genius Avery." Like Pokemon Trainer Avery or Gym Leader Avery. A lot of fun could be had with that. "Harmful to the environment, you should consider another method." Earths were like girl scouts, really, she'd come to discover that when she realized exactly what the girl scouts did and what they stood for. Environmental friendliness was number one on her checklist.
Nell giggled when he talked about his charm being programmed, which actually made him sound like a robot. It was silly, because he was the furthest thing from a robot. "You must have the cutest genetics then." Then that gave her the strange mental image of blushing x and y chromosomes acting all cutesy. Her brain scared her a lot of the times. Especially the fact that she gave Avery's shoulder a pillow rating. Which he clearly did not meet, since he was not made of Egyptian cotton. She tilted her head and appeared to consider it. "It helps a little," she said airily. "But you know you'll use my shoulder without consent to do anything." He had no limits, and she wondered if anyone gave him a hard time about it. She was an affectionate person herself, but the entire human race couldn't enjoy an Asian man feeling up on them all the time.
There he went again with the cheek pinched. She furrowed her eyebrows, actually wishing that she could have had grandparents to prepare her for such a thing. Aunt Jane had taken to it once or twice when visiting in her childhood, but she wasn't prone to affection. "Who don't you like?" she questioned with light in her eyes. Other than those darned Thunders. "If you kept me well-fed, then sure. I mean, I'd be happy with a food bowl in one of those gerbil water bottles." It was true that she could probably survive those conditions. "Oh, and if you let me outside. To do my business." She wouldn't be able to handle being cooped up all the time. It happened once, never again. And then he said something about an outfit, and she blinked a few times. "An outfit. You've been planning this, haven't you? What kind of outfit?" She was concerned about his reply, knowing him. That is, if she could take him seriously. A lot of the time she couldn't, and she also didn't take the world seriously, so that's how that worked.
Now she was worried, when he said that his funny bone had been injured in his klutziness. She pursed her lips, and said, "Do you want me to kiss your booboo?" She really should not have been saying something like that to him, but her intentions were always innocent. It's what she'd seen mothers do with their kids. She'd done it before with some of her younger ones when she had worked at the daycare. Her entire expression, however, looked crestfallen when he said that he would never give her lollipops again, taking the towel as she wondered if he was serious. "I hope your joking!" she said, pulling her best puppy dog eyes. "And I am a lady, I do not drool." She rolled her eyes in a very pompous, lady-like manner. Slobber did not exist in her mouth, and how dare Avery suggest such a thing, But she still wiped her mouth with the towel.
When Avery asked if she had told Josh, she shook her head. "Nah," she told him casually, playing air drums with the lollipops. "It happens enough that I wouldn't want to bother him about it." And chances were that the next time she saw him, she wouldn't even remember to tell him. It didn't matter too much, because it would just become a part of the past, another addition to her collection of injuries and that would be that. She didn't even wince when he applied the ointment, even though it was cold as liquid nitrogen. Or how she would think liquid nitrogen would be like. "I guess there aren't any Thunder elementals around to undo the damage?" She wasn't too disappointed, she could take care of herself, and Avery was doing a very good job. He was a trained professional, and she trusted him.

Avery had to keep in his amused look when Nell looked at him. Her eyes were the size of globes and it honestly kind of freaked him out. He lightly patted her on the head, finally laughing out loud when she said she loved his hair. "Good, be jealous~" And he flipped his hair to the side in a way that would put Justin Beiber to shame. Though the "Asian" thing was kind of questionable and he laughed at the silliness of it. He patted her again on the head, shaking his head in amusement. The things Nell said sometimes were so entertaining. "You sound like a weeaboo," he pointed out flatly, trying to hold back his smirk but was failing miserably. He highly doubted being Asian meant nice hair...but then again, how would he know? He was born with it after all. "I like the way you think!" Avery nodded, seriously considering it. "I expect you to call me that now~" Somewhere in the back of his mind, he thought of this as cruel and unusual punishment for Nell. Meh, oh well. Avery liked that way it sounded, and who knows? It might actually catch on. But then he'd have to explain for brainwashing his patients.
"D'aww, at least someone acknowledges it!" he cooed, his face scrunching into a pout. It was a probably a bad idea to flatter Avery, considering that brought out his prince mindset and that it something no one wanted to see. He was very...hm...no, he'd be...let's just say all his actions and affection would be magnified. By like, one hundred. Adding onto that, people often refused to acknowledging the nurse was a cute person. Whether they found it weird or they found out about his princely mindset early on, it was a mystery. But it cruel to deny the man of his adorableness. "That--" Avery froze mid-sentence to think about, originally going to deny it, but ended up slumping his shoulders. "...true." He smacked his lips distastefully. "Am I becoming that predictable?" Literally the whole school knew he was affectionate, but he didn't think it was that bad. But bad in everyone else's dictionaries was the complete opposite in Avery's.
Avery actually had to think about this for a second. Okay, it was true he loved people, showed them that everyday despite whether they were strangers or not, but surely there had to be people didn't like. It was hard for anyone to make Avery dislike them (but those thunders had done a pretty good job). "Clowns." It was a simple and true statement. Clowns creeped the hell out of him, and he scrunched his nose when an image of one popped into his mind. "Umm." Avery blinked, not really prepared for Nell's answer. He quickly recovered though, grinning as he pet her on the head. "I shall call you Squishy then." Avery nodded firmly, poking her cheek. The things Nell came up with...it even made Avery flustered sometimes. "I don't know what you're talking about~" he said innocently, blinking back at her. He didn't plan this (that would've been creepy, even for Avery) but there were some extra nurse outfits hidden in the back just...in case? He didn't know why they were there actually. But there were extras! "Like that!" Avery pointed at a passing nurse who was thoroughly confused but walked away anyways. "It'd probably make you look all stuffy though~" Even his doctor coat made him look stuffy and stiff.
His eyes lit up, though a second later he pouted. Avery rubbed his elbow as he shook his head childishly. "Nope, I'm a big boy~" Pfft, he didn't need kisses. Kisses were for babies! Avery was twenty-seven. Nope. "I'm not falling for that," he said pointedly, narrowing his eyes at Nell's puppy dog eyes. Oh, no. He had grown immune to that years ago; it would no longer affect. No matter how cute they were. "I don't think it'd bother him," Avery pointed out, tilting his head at the earth sitting across from him, getting a lollipop for himself. He really needed to lay off the lollipops. He consumed like, five a day. Which really wasn't healthy. Avery snorted, now reaching for the bandages. "Seems like they're the ones sending me patients." Though he sort of wished it was the other way around--no! Avery had to stay professional. No matter how upset he was, and so he gently placed the bandages where they were needed, remembering to place more ointment on her arm as well before wrapping that up too. "All patched up!" He pinched her cheek, laughing. "You've been a good girl~"

Nell wrinkled her nose up in consideration. Was that a real word he just spoke, or an Avery-word? "What's a weaboo?" she asked, testing the word out on her lips. As far away as she stayed from the internet, the term was very foreign to her and she didn't know whether it was a good or a bad thing. "I'm sure nobody would have any problem calling you that! Because you are." Okay, there were a lot of people who'd have a problem, but screw 'em. Avery was a great guy deserving of recognition! Or maybe Nell just adored people far too much, putting them on a pedestal and throwing flowers at them.
The girl didn't mind complimenting Avery with something she saw as true. He was adorable, how could she help it. He didn't even look his age, which was why she always had to guess at it in her mind. It was like a game she'd never win. She laughed, her shoulders lifting as she exhaled. "Nope, not predictable. Though if you want to trip someone up, just keep a five foot distance from them and don't touch them." She didn't think he could do it. In her mind, there was some kind of magnet attracting Avery to people. It was something she appreciated, when she knew a lot of people who were standoffish enough that they didn't like anyone touching them.
Even though Nell never understood the dislike of clowns that seemed to be ingrained into society's collective psyche, she accepted his answer as truth. She didn't realize that she had been throwing Avery for a loop, though, because she didn't think it possible to leave him speechless. So she was curious until he brushed off the comment about him planning it. Which would have been funny and creepy at the same time, and she couldn't gauge which one would be more. Then he pointed to a passing nurse, and she said, "A nurse uniform, hmm? Never worn one. Don't think I'm qualified to wear that." She knew a lot about first-aid thanks to her history, but she hadn't ever really considered nursing. It would be something she had the potential to be good at, though. "I'm used to wearing stuffy things. I've worked at all kinds of places." Worked and volunteered, she'd been keeping herself busy ever since coming to Canada.
She had to giggle when he was stubborn about kisses, acting like a child he was trying to deny himself as being. Everyone loved kisses on their booboos though! She certainly would have liked it. Nell distracted by picking at the stool she sat on, not looking at Avery as she shrugged. "Eh, it's a little thing." She talked to Josh about the little things, yes, but injuries were what she liked to call her best kept secrets. She just...didn't talk about it, and that was that. On the matter of the Thunders sending him the most patients, she really had to agree. "They're like sleeping animals that don't want to be disturbed, honestly. At least we're not in wartime." Saying that word made her feel like she was in some old espionage film, working as a lieutenant in the military or something.
She bit down on the lollipops all at once, effectively cutting off her ability to talk for a little while as she chomped down on all the candy. "Thanks, feel better already!" Nell giggled when he pinched her cheek, hopping down from the stool. She looked at her arm. "I'd love to hang around, but I have school and you have patients!" She'd be leaving earlier than him thanks to college and the fact that she had work, so she wouldn't be able to stick around even if she wanted to. Nell gave him a big (careful) hug before leaving to collect her cards.

Avery laughed and poked Nell's nose as it scrunched up. Surely everyone heard of that word at least once, right? Or was the just him? "A wanna-be Asian," he put simply, amusement on his face. The word probably should've been used in a more extreme case because he knew Nell was kidding, but it seemed fitting as he was kidding as well. "D'aww, don't you know how to flatter somebody~" It was probably a bad idea to flatter Avery considering how easy it was to fill his ego. And besides, if he forced people to actually call him that, not only would it be awkward for the other party, but it would be for him too. The faculty probably wouldn't approve of it either, though Avery found it hilarious just imagining people greeting him in the halls as 'handsome genius.'
On more than one occasion, people called Avery adorable. Not that he minded, he was flattered, but he preferred something along the lines of charming. He was a grown man! ...at least on the outside. His inner child was ecstatic and embarrassed, actually. "That...that sounds cruel!" Avery pointed out. He knew he wouldn't be able to do it either. He was a naturally friendly person, so for him to isolate himself from them? Even for a few feet? That was like taking sugar away from Avery's life. It just didn't happen, and it was cruel punishment. Affection was needed in everybody's life! Anybody who said otherwise was lying.
The thought of disliking someone sort of made Avery feel awkward for a moment. He was friendly, outgoing...but would he have said the same thing back when he was at the Academy. That was a long stretch, considering he was bullied a lot back then. Avery now just couldn't stand the thought of disliking someone. Someone disliking him? Avery was fine with it, to some extent. As long as they didn't act on it violently towards him, he was fine. It's not like Avery let that kind of stuff get to him, anyways. He was a better, stronger person now than he was when he was still in high school. "Pfft, that's what Halloween is for!" Avery exclaimed as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. When it was Halloween, people could dress up as anything and not be questioned. Plus, the candy was a big upside to the holiday. Sometimes Avery contemplated just not handing out children any candy and keeping it to himself. He was too old to trick-or-treat, anyways.
Avery narrowed his eyes playfully when Nell giggled at him. What? He was a grown man! Booboo kisses were for babies! "Nell, this could hardly be considered little," he pointed, his eyes on the burn scars. Avery shivered slightly at the sight of it, turning away to throw away leftover wrappers. He was hardly ever serious, but this...he hoped Nell wouldn't stay silent about it. Avery knew she was a strong girl, but there were only so many things people could take before they broke down. Support was something Nell had and Avery envied that. It'd be nice to have someone to come home to. "Like irritable grizzly bears coming out of hibernation," he agreed, his lips forming into a flat line. Don't get him wrong, he met a few thunders who he got along really well with. But just some...scared him. Simple as that.
The simultaneous sounds of multiple lollipops crunching down made Avery cringe a bit, laughing slightly as he watched Nell. "You're going to end up breaking your teeth, woman." And that's what Avery feared when giving out pieces of candy for some of the students. They just chomped down on it and the sound just made Avery cringe. "Yeah, yeah~" He waved his hand around as a dismissal, patting Nell on the back as she hugged him. Nell was one of the few who actually showed affection back to avery, which he appreciated. Avery watched her leave, a somewhat bitter smile on his face before he called out, "I don't think it'd hurt to tell Josh, y'know!" Some people just needed some protection, whether they wanted it or not.
