So. Many. Distractions. Lark sat next to the window in the classroom, staring listlessly out over the grounds of the Academy with a glazed look in her eyes. The snow was pretty though. Mesmerizing and glistening in the sun. Focusing on the weather was far more entertaining than listening to the teacher ramble on and on about history and the significance of the World Wars. A finger tapped her on the shoulder. "Yo, Harper." She turned her head to look at one of her classmates, who was staring at her intently. "Yeah?" Lark kept her voice low to avoid from being called out by the teacher for disrupting class. The other girl leaned back in her seat, content that she had gained Lark's attention. "Do you have the homework from last night? I didn't get around to doing it, so..." Was this chick actually hinting at cheating? Lark could be rebellious when she wanted to be, but she wasn't stupid. How obvious would it be if their homework had the same exact answers? Instead of giving any sort of real explanation, she scoffed and fiddled with an eraser. "I didn't do it either, so I guess you're shit outta luck. Guess you'll need to see if anyone else can share." She actually had done the work but a little white lie wouldn't harm anything. Better than any larger problems should the teacher find out. The girl look put off by the rejection and sighed heavily. "Yeah, I guess I will." She then proceeded to tap the shoulders of other students to try and gain their attention. Oh well; some poor sap was going to cheerfully hand over their homework, only to most likely find themselves in trouble. At least it wasn't her. Lark slouched in her seat and waited for the bell to ring. At the sound she got up and casually left the room.
It took her a minute to realize what day it was. The pink, red, and white colored decorations and people giving out little gifts to their friends and significant others reminded her that Valentine's Day existed. Well then. She was not accustomed to spending the holiday with anyone, and this year was different. Not that she wanted anything from Ashton of course. Lark was content merely spending time with him. She was simple like that. Easy to please. Sighing softly to herself, the Fire girl meandered down the hallway through the mass of students. Her stomach was growling at her, begging to be fed. Calm your tits I'm going to get food now, She scolded her gut in attempts to silence it. If only people would move out of her way she could get to the mess hall quicker. It took a little pushing and shoving but eventually she managed to survive her trip. Lark grabbed her food--a couple of slices of pizza, a cookie, and a water bottle--before stopping and searching for her boyfriend. He was not always the easiest to find, sitting among all of his friends and acquaintances. She finally caught sight of him waving her over and dodged a few students to make her way towards him. She nearly dumped her tray twice. They really did need some sort of traffic control. "Hey," Lark said sweetly with a smile, sitting down next to him and setting the tray on the table with a clack. She gave him a kiss on the cheek. "Class was so...bleh. I honestly don't know how someone would want to become a history teacher." Not that their position was not reputable; more that the subject was not all that exciting. Maybe it was for them though. "How've yours been so far? Surviving, I hope?" She chuckled and poked Ashton in the side affectionately.

Ashton had never paid too much mind to Valentines Day. Since Ash was such a doting guy, there really was not a difference between how he treated a girl on holidays and how he treated them during regular ol' weekdays. It was weird to think that he had a girlfriend this Valentines. During the last he'd been single and—hah! It occurred to him that he had spent the last Valentines with Lark as well, except then they'd been strangers participating in the Academy's blind dating event. Funny how that worked out. It brought a smile to his face and he chuckled, attracting the attention of a few classmates sitting closest to him. He waved his hand as if to say that it was nothing and stood up when the bell rang, feeling his stomach punching him repeatedly in the gut as punishment for skipping out on breakfast. He'd arranged to meet with Lark in the mess hall anyway and so he supposed that worked out. He managed to slip ahead a lot of the crowd and get into the hall before it was insufferably packed, getting a burger and fries from the buffet bar and grabbing a can of soda as well. When he spotted Lark he waved her over to his table with a broad smile, deciding that he would sit apart from his usual large group of friends and spend time just with her. "Hey hey," he replied, smiling broadly as she sat down and kissed him on the cheek. He returned the gesture without hesitation and shook his head. "Geez, right? History is such a drag." He could not understand how anyone understood it or liked it. It was so boring! "I was in English. Better than Math, at least. Way better than Math." College Algebra, the bane of Ashton's existence. At least it wasn't physics but to a Math-hated that was a small comfort.
He yelped slightly in surprise when she poked him in the side, automatically flinching inward but then relaxing with a goofy grin. "Just. I feel like I could sleep for days." He hadn't gotten much sleep lately because college was a lot harder than he'd ever thought it would be. "Least it's a holiday, though, so no tests or anything." He missed high school when they'd spend holidays watching movies in class instead of doing work. Oh well, he'd take the absence of tests in the mindset that it was better than nothing at all. Ever the optimist. "So glad I can finally eat," he said with longing, sticking two fries into his mouth at once after he spoke. "I ate a bunch of candy in the morning that my brother had for his classmates and I didn't catch breakfast." He looked a little furtive as he admitted this crime, flashing a quick smile. He had seen the candy sitting on the counter and he hadn't been able to help himself. Cameron and his parents had gotten upset with him so guess who had to do the early morning run to the corner store? It had caused him to miss breakfast and be late for his first class, how fun. It was better than being bitched out by his parents and little brother for the rest of the day, though. "I have homework but I really just do not want," he groaned. He didn't like doing homework because he thought that it was boring and pointless and all around blah. Because 'blah' was a great descriptive word for that. "What about you?" Because when you had homework and didn't want to do it, why not talk about not wanting to do it?

Lark blushed. Even though it was a simple kiss on the cheek, the affection meant more than Ashton probably realized. The little things always mattered most. Small gestures that proved someone cared or enjoyed her company. She may not have stopped and said thank you all of the time, or expressed her gratitude consistently, but she was thankful all the same. The smell of pizza was so enticing and, before responding to Ashton, she took a bite. Her stomach would most certainly be pleased. "It really is," She finally replied after swallowing. Her eyes glanced around her to watch the people come and go. "I would take English over History or Math any day. And I would prefer History over Math. I think that one is kinda...at the bottom of the pile." Next to science. She liked to somewhat understand how the world worked but since she had no interest in it for the future there really was no need to go past the basics. Her drive to learn subjects through experience made classroom learning all that more difficult. It was amazing that she had a desire to become a teacher and give out guitar lessons to others. How ironic was that? She chuckled when he flinched; it was not meant to surprise or tickle him. Lark was still growing accustomed to this whole touchy-feely thing and used small gestures to show her affection. "Aww, I'm sorry. You should take a nap later. We can crash on the couch in the dorms or something." Not like she had much else to do that afternoon after classes were done. She could shirk off homework, it was not that difficult.
"At least there's that," Lark agreed with a nod. Having a holiday sure was a wonderful reprieve from the daily grind of school work and tests. It was only temporary but still she absorbed it all the same. Besides it gave her a chance to spend time with Ashton. She took a bite of her food as he dug into his fries. "Food is a glorious thing. I kinda woke up late and was nearly late to class so I had to miss out on breakfast." The alarm on her phone was such a troll. She set it the night before, only for it to be set to PM instead of AM. She raised an eyebrow and laughed. "Only you would go out of the way to eat candy in the morning. I'm pretty sure Cam wasn't all that happy about it." She had never experienced much of the Valentine's thing at school, nor participated in it. Not that she didn't want to give things to her friends but she was simply not one to fawn over the holiday obsessively like some people did. I want affection on more than just one day out of the year. And Ashton gave her that. She took another bite of her pizza before leaning her head on his shoulder for a few seconds to express she felt the same way about the dreaded homework. "It probably wants you though. I would normally say I'm jealous but I feel that that relationship is one sided." Lark chuckled, teasing. She was not a jealous person by nature. She trusted Ashton anyway. "I have a little bit, but I'll probably be the shining example of a diligent student and put it off until the last minute." It was one of those days. She just wanted to laze around and do nothing and spend time with Ashton. Was that so much to ask? School could wait.
[Coulda probably rambled another paragraph but figured I'd keep it shorter for you. <3]

Ashton couldn't really decided whether he disliked History or Math more. Probably History. Why? "Well at least Math is useful sometimes. What's the use of knowing a bunch of war names and generals? Not like I remember anything about the actual wars..." He shook his head. They did teach the class about the wars and the basics of what went down but generally there was a lot of stress on remembering names and dates and all that. He stressed so hard to recall that information that he ended up forgetting what actually mattered. "Math is just boring." Multiplication and adding, division and subtracting, he got that. Fractions in a way. Some algebra was useful. Volume? No. Geometry? No. Why should he care about the different kinds of triangles? He could honestly say that he'd never seen a triangle and thought excitedly, Oh my god, it's an obtuse! Pointless and boring. "Mm, sleep," he said with obvious longing. "I mean I don't know if I should... might fuck me up even more later on, but... guhhh." Oh, the temptations of the couch in the dormitories. He did miss having a big room all to himself in the dormitories, though. The perks of being a leader had been pretty awesome. A bigger room, more amenities, privacy. Oh well. Two years had been the maximum term and he was lucky he'd had that. "Isn't breakfast like, the most important meal of the day or something? Or is that dinner?" Yeah he didn't really know. He looked at Lark expectantly, wondering if she would. "Food is food, though. I don't really care when I eat." He sank his teeth into the burger and closed his eyes for a moment. So good. All the best foods tended to be unhealthy.
Oddly enough, Ashton really wasn't much of a sugar whore. He didn't like candy as much as some people did but when he woke up with an urge to have chocolate and there was a tub of chocolate hearts on the kitchen table, he couldn't help himself. "No, Cameron's definitely not too pleased," he agreed. His brother was still quite young and in the spirit of being young he had pitched a fit and Ashton had been chewed out by his parents. It had not been a fun morning. All the same, Ashton's optimism made it easy for him to bounce back from things. "I drove out and replaced it, though, bought him something extra too. That seemed to cheer him up." Ashton was the type that would overcompensate if he thought someone was mad at him. He would try harder than usual to make them happy because he didn't like to see people angry or upset, especially not at him. Ashton laughed at the idea of homework wanting him, then looked mildly disturbed, though it was mostly for the sake of the joke. It was a pretty creepy thought, though. "Sentient homework? Jeez, Lark, you'd think you were trying to give me nightmares!" He got nightmares a lot, actually, but they were mostly stupid things that made no sense rather than night terrors or anything serious. His parents had always attributed it to the fact that he watched too many scary movies. That was probably it, actually. "Oh, god, now I'm going to have a dream that my Math homework is coming onto me. Why must you do this to me, Lark? Why?" He was laughing, though, smiling, completely at ease with their situation and conversation.
He was a procrastinator to the extremes. Ashton always put things off until the last minute and so he totally understood Lark's desire to do just that. "Take me with you," he laughed. "This voyage of procrastination sounds awesome." Seriously, though, he did not want to do homework right now. He was with his girlfriend, too, and she was a bigger distraction than anything else. It was fun to be with Lark. Homework was not fun. When given a choice, guess which he'd rather choose? "Wanna find something else to do? After we eat, that is." He sank his teeth into the burger again, took another couple of friends. His mouth was full enough that he couldn't talk through the food even if he wanted to and so he waited until he swallowed, which was a bit painful thanks to such a large bite, before saying, "Hey, we should totally skip the rest of the day and go to Wal-Mart or something," he said suddenly, lighting up like a kid on Christmas. Or a Christmas tree on Christmas since, y'know, those things were pretty freaking bright. They could ride the bikes around the halls and have nerf gun fights or beat one another with plastic swords or pool noodles. Silly things. I mean, it technically wasn't allowed but as long as they weren't hurting anyone it was okay, right?

"Yeah but...the formulas, Ash. The formulas." Lark reminded him, sounding exasperated at the thought of remembering every. single. formula. It was mind-fuckery. At least with history it was just names and places and dates that never changed. With math they gave you the same formula and then tossed in a bunch of different numbers every time. And you had to work it out to get an answer. With History it was just...there. No variables. No x plus y equals who knows what to the no one cares power. Lark patted him on the arm sympathetically and nodded. "Yeah it is. But I guess we'll just have to deal. One day we won't have to have math class anymore." And that would be a pretty glorious thing. No more school period. Learning was fun, but sitting in the classroom wasn't. She wanted to go out and gain experience elsewhere. Truly learn what everything was about without having someone spend the entire day lecturing. To speak of it but not do it was not helpful in the least. "Well, then if you can hold out until tonight you can just crash at a decent hour hm? Assuming homework doesn't mess with that." Homework messed up everything. There were so many things she would rather do than work on papers or study. Like play her guitar, spend time with her boyfriend, her best friends, and goof off. That sounded infinitely better than studying. Lark blinked and tilted her head thoughtfully. "I dunno," She replied, still pondering this question as if it held all of life's answers. "Maybe it depends on when you wake up. Like...if you work a night shift or some shit. So breakfast is normally when dinner is. And stuff." That would be a fucked up schedule. Did not want.
The pizza before her was slowly but surely disappearing; having not eaten all day she was eager to stuff her face but at the same time did not want to look like a hobo who was just graced with their first meal in weeks. Lark was never one for full-on manners but that would be ridiculous. When alone maybe, but not here. She laughed and passed him an adoring smile. "Such a good big brother," She complemented, a small wisp of longing for a sibling passing through. She was not sure she could experience that now. "Well, minus the fact that you ate his candy in the first place. Was it at least worth it? As long as it was worth it, that's all that matters." That's how Lark looked on her past quite often. It prevented her from feeling the guilt she might have felt otherwise. Even if things did not unfold the way she wanted them to in the end, the decision was still for the best over all. Lark smirked at Ashton and waggled her eyebrows. "Possibly. Though that might be a bit too cruel. I have other methods of torture I could use instead." And those methods were actually lost to her as well. Ashton did not have know that though; it was all a mind game. What did she have up her sleeve? What was behind door number two? The world may never know. She laughed along with him, picking off a pepperoni and popping it into her mouth mid-chuckle. "Don't worry! I'll protect you! I'll toss it into a paper shredder, and all your problems will be solved. And I can be hero of the day." She puffed out her chest slightly and made a pose before returning to her food. Food was so distracting.
She did enjoy procrastinating. Sure, she got things done and turned her homework in, but most of it was completed the night before it was due. Projects were a bit of a different story but even then there was a struggle to just put it off until the last minute. "We'll ride off into the sunset of procrastination," Lark proclaimed, sweeping her hand in front of them as though visualizing the scene. "Towards the horizon of last-minuteness. A pretty good ending to a movie I think." She never watched Western movies but that's normally how the old ones ended right? The lone gun-slinger takes off on his beautiful horse into the sunset, never to be heard from again. Either that or he takes off with the woman he won over during the movie. Romantic. She finished off the second slice of pizza by this point. "Sure! Just let me finish desert and we can do that." Lark observed the cookie with a look of longing before picking it up and taking a bite, closing her eyes mid-chew. "That...is one amazing cookie. Best ever. Why did I pass over them before?" She was always skittish about trying their baked goods because one time she got a muffin that nearly broke her tooth when she bit into it. They just found themselves in her good graces again. Halfway through the cookie, Lark glanced over at Ashton and smiled. "Naughty Ash, skipping school." She went quiet for a moment, as though she were denying his suggestion before finishing off the other half of the cookie in one bite. "Let's do it. Let's see how long it'll take before they kick us out. We should make a bet on it." Ah, gambling. Well, kinda like gambling but you didn't get to use fancy poker chips.

He laughed, ducking his head as he did so with a broad grin plastered on his lips. Lark could make him laugh without even trying. A lot of people could, he was easily amused, but it was always nice to know that your girlfriend was one of those people. "Okay, okay, History and Math can tie, then. Would that make you happy?" He poked her cheek as he spoke, smiling. He liked to see her happy. "Ugh, that'll be the day," he groaned in longing. No more Math class, no more school, it would be perfect. Why couldn't it be perfect now? "Just wish it could be now and not like forever away." It was only a couple years and when one considered how long they'd actually lived it didn't seem too long at all but that did not matter to Ashton in the present. All that mattered was that he did not want to do his homework tonight. "It was... kinda worth it?" He shrugged. "I'm not really big on candy even though I do get those random cravings and having my parents yelling about it was not fun." The candy had been good and all but getting into trouble was not quite so fun. He enjoyed spending time with Cameron, he liked seeing his brother happy, but there were still those rare times when he realised his younger sibling got the favouritism. He knew it was only because they saw him as the older, more responsible sibling but it stung to see Cameron getting away with murder while he got chewed out for a lot of things. Ashton was easy-going and accepting, though, so at the end of the day he sucked it up and dealt with it.
The idea of being tortured by Math homework was not one he liked to entertain but then he knew it was not a real possibility so there was at least some comfort there. "D'ahw, my hero," he joked, fluttering his hand over his heart like he couldn't take his affections for Lark any longer. Then he pulled back as if affronted, though it was all an act. "Hey, hey, hero? Are you trying to make me the girl in this relationship? I thought you said I'd look terrible in a dress!" He sniffled and pretended to wipe away a tear. "I thought you cared about me, Lark, but I guess it was all one-sided." He was such a silly guy, really. He hoped that Lark knew him well enough to know that he was kidding but then, Ashton's joking around was always far too obvious. Who grinned like an idiot when they were pretending to cry, anyway? This guy. It totally gave away his act but that was alright with Ashton. He didn't want Lark to believe that he was upset with her. If he thought she was taking him too seriously he'd probably frantically take it back amidst a flurry of apologies. He was an incredibly apologetic person when he thought that he'd done something wrong. "A cliché ending to a movie," he corrected, chuckling. Not that cliché things were all that bad in Ashton's book. He read romance novels, they were practically the masters of the predictable ending. "Can I have some? I don't think I've ever tried that kind before." At least he was more polite about it than some of his friends who thought it was so totally cool to snatch food right out of his hands and have it eaten before he could even begin figuring out what was going on. That was never fair.
At first he thought that Lark was scolding him for wanting to skip and so, ever the people pleaser, he turned red and offered her a sheepish smile. "Or we can, um, not. It's whatever you want, really!" He wanted her to be happy, wanted everyone to be happy, so he was willing to sacrifice things that he would normally do for others. But then she amended her words and he grinned, the excitement back on his features. "A bet, huh? Uh... hm, ten bucks says ten minutes or do you think we can last longer than that?" It honestly depended on how quickly they were spotted and how understanding the people that caught them were. He hoped the cops weren't called but that seemed a silly thing to call the police for. They weren't going to steal anything, they were just planning to have some stupid, teenage fun. The bell rang and he grinned. "C'mon, let's go!" He followed and blended in with the crowd but broke away from it when they neared the doors and slipped out behind a couple other college students who probably had a free period they were going to spend at Tim Hortons. Bless college for giving him some good cover. When they got to Wal-Mart, and it was a very large Wal-Mart, he gave a disarming smile to one of the clerks and then cast his green gaze toward Lark. It twinkled with mischief, the promise that they could get up to something and have a good time. "What should we do first? There're so many things..." He almost didn't know where to begin!

Lark giggled and smiled at Ashton, blinking as he poked her cheek. He was the only person that drew out this side of her, and probably would remain the only one. She pushed her hair behind her ear. "So incredibly happy. You have no idea." She said with a faint roll of her eyes. Eh, it was just math and history. Ashton was the one that made her happy. One day she would have to stop and actually thank him for that. For now Lark was content listening to him gripe about school and how they both wished it would vanish forever. Ashton chose to go to college though so he was going to be stuck with it for a few more years. And so will I. No matter how much she wished she could get what she wanted without school, it was simply not possible. Too many places required a degree. "Yeah I know but it'll be over before you know it! And you and your degree will live happily ever after." She crossed her arms over her chest and fluttered her eyelashes as though she were enthralled with such a romantic ending. Lark sighed a bit and put her arms down. "Well I guess that's the one downfall of living at home," Lark replied a bit quietly. It was not meant to insult Ashton of course; she was merely stating facts. "It's definitely a cheaper way to live though." She had been saving up money to find herself an apartment, but it was slow going. The dorms were nice and all but having a place to call her own would be magnificent. Baby steps. Frank actually offered to help her out but Lark refused. She wanted to take care of this on her own and be self-sustaining.
"Super Lark," She dubbed herself. If only she could fly and have super strength and wear a fancy cape. Well, maybe the cape but the rest was a bit out of reach. She also drew back and looked at him as though she were shocked. "You would look terrible in a dress, I still hold to that. But...are you saying I wouldn't do well as a hero? Or is that just a guy thing?" Lark pouted at him and allowed her lip to quiver. She nudged him playfully, but she was still pouting. "Oh yes, Ash. Totally one-sided y'know. I'm sorry that I don't express my feelings enough for you to notice them." She said, acting all upset and also wiping away a fake tear or two. In all honesty she probably didn't express them as much as she thought to, but had yet to find some sort of happy medium. It sucked being new to all of this, yet it didn't. "Hey," Lark waggled a finger at him, dropping the charade but still smiling. "Cliche isn't always bad. Like some of the movies aren't too overdone..." Actually most of them were, but that was okay. Lark never watched many of them to begin with but the ones she had seen were pretty corny. After she had already finished half of the cookie Ashton asked for some; innocently she looked from the cookie to his face, then back again. "Well, if you don't mind cooties." She smirked and handed him the other half before taking another drink of water. Her boyfriend should be grateful; Lark never shared her desserts with just anyone. He was certainly something special. Ashton did not understand how big of a deal cookie sharing was for her.
With a sigh, she set the empty bottle on the table along with the rest of her trash before looking over at him with a chuckle. "You're cute, thinking that I'd rather be in class." Lark stated casually as she fiddled with the empty paper plate in front of her. Her eyes lit up as he took on the bet, nodding. "Hmm...let's keep it ten bucks but I bet we can last at least twenty minutes." The bell rang and, at Ashton's invitation, Lark took off after him. It was not all that difficult to sneak out with some of the college students. Upon entering Wal-Mart, Lark glanced around at some of the employees before exchanging a mischievous glance with Ashton. "I think I have an idea. Come on." She waved for him to follow but picked up the pace and headed straight for the toy section. With a smooth motion Lark snagged a Nerf gun off of one of the shelves and hid behind another shelf. Shit. Gotta take out the darts. Oh well; if they were already planning on getting kicked out there was no reason to hesitate now. She unhooked a few of the darts on the box and loaded them into the gun, feeling a bit of an adrenaline rush at the prospect of starting a Nerf fight in Wal-Mart. She poked her head around the shelf and down the aisle to see where he was. As soon as she caught sight of him, Lark let one of the darts loose. She could not tell whether it hit him or not because she took off down another aisle, gun loaded. "I'd like to see you beat me at this game brah," Lark called out, glancing down both ends of the aisle to see where he might be. She wanted to move but decided to wait and see what Ashton might do.

Unfortunately for Ashton, he hadn't thought too much about the practicality of his major. Elemental Studies was not something that could be bragged about in the real world. It was recieved under the guise of a botany degree just as Fires had geology and Waters often studied some sort of marine-related major. Their elemental courses were mixed in with things that were actually useful in the real world but the main focus on element was not something the mortals hiring you in the future could ever know about. It was his mother's main argument but he'd tuned her out in all debates about it thus far. He was doing what he wanted for now, testing the waters of the college experience. "Yeah, it does kind of suck," he agreed. "I mean, if I were paying rent they might be a little bit less...strict, but..." They hadn't started demanding financial compensation for the roof over his head yet. Should he offer? It would mean less money in his own pocket but it would also mean that he'd be able to argue his case if they started treating him like he was eight years old again. "For girls it's heroine," he pointed out. "Like the drug but way more badass and not dangerous to my health." He laughed. Yeah, he might have tried smoking weed once or twice thanks to peer pressure but thankfully Ashton had not yet been stupid or gullible enough to dabble deeper in that world. It was a whole new can of worms that he was not very keen on opening. He'd stick to his addiction-free life, thank you very much.
It was fun to joke around with Lark, nice to see that she was always happy and smiling around him. It helped to remind Ashton that his past relationships were in the past and that it was still possible for him to be with a girl and not feel like shit about it all of the time. It made him happy. "Well then it's your fault if you're the one who's not expressing things," he accused. lifting his chin as if he were affronted at the idea of her upset. How dare she try and guilt him into feeling sorry for her! Sometimes he wished that he could stop smiling on command, it would help to make his jokes so much more believable. Ashton was too silly for his own good. "When did I say cliché was bad?" He raised his eyebrows at her in challenge, smiling. He had never said such a thing. "I read romance, Lark, I know all about cliché." Had she forgotten about his not so secret love of steamy romance novels? Well, now it would all be at the forefront of her mind again no doubt. Must be quite awkward to think of your boyfriend reading things that were often favoured by lonely, middle-aged housewives. Well, that was the stereotype for romance novel readers anyway. Clearly the fact that he enjoyed them meant that there were others in the fanbase. Ashton grinned. "Nah, I got my cootie shot in like, third grade. I come prepared!" He'd been just as silly back in third grade except he'd been smaller and probably a lot more hyperactive. Not much else about him had changed.
He grinned. He couldn't say he found anything wrong with being called cute. Maybe some guys might get offended by such a term but not Ash. Lark bet that they'd last twice as long as he thought and he nodded. "Deal. May the best better win!" Best better. It was a bit like a tongue twister and he refrained from repeating it a few times over. He grinned back and followed her without question through the store, down the aisles, skirting the unsuspecting staff. It felt good to be bad. He might have been a good guy, a relatively good kid, but that did not mean he didn't enjoy these sorts of antics as much as your average teenager. There was something satisfying about breaking the rules in an innocent way. He didn't like stealing or vandalism but Wal-Mart expeditions were harmless. He wondered where the hell Lark had got off to with her gun when she popped out from behind a shelf and shot him, causing Ashton to yelp in surprise. He laughed, then exclaimed, "Hey! I'll get you back for that!" He grabbed and loaded a Nerf gun of his own, also picking up a Frisbee to use as a shield. He would have preferred something larger like a garbage bin lid but they were not close enough to that section of the store for him to successfully nab one. He chased after Lark and shot a dart in the general direction of her shoulder, grinning wide. He ducked behind a shelf for cover when a staff member rounded the corner, feeling a lot like James Bond as he peeked out from behind his hiding spot to check if the coast was clear. Man, this was great. Why didn't they do this every day?

Lark made a sort of humming noise in her throat, not really appearing all that hopeful. "Unfortunately Ash parents don't usually function that way. They'll still try and argue that it's 'their house, their rules' and blah blah blah." She clamped her fingers together and made it look like a mouth moving to accent her words. In fact, Lark had experienced that a while back before the incident with Frank. They had had another fight and Lark had offered to pay him some sort of rent to try and alleviate his heavy hand but it was rather fruitless. He still argued that even if she paid him it did not change the rules. Chores might be lightened up but aside from that she would still be treated like a child. "But maybe they won't do that to you. You'll never know unless you ask them about it." Lark was a bit of a realist and did not really expect his parents to be completely open to him being free to do whatever he wanted under their roof simply because he gave them money, but it was more based on her past experience than anything else. Maybe they would break the mold. She shrugged and smiled at him. "Psh, no need to get so technical," She waved him off. "But I do like being bad ass. And who knows? I might be bad for your health." All in teasing of course. Lark had never tried drugs, nor did she plan to. Sure she liked to drown some of her nights away in alcohol but it was not something she relied on every day (like Frank did). She also did not fall easily into peer pressure and only did what she wanted, when she wanted. Drugs were definitely on her 'no-go' list. Briefly Brett crossed her mind and she inwardly scowled.
Out of anything, Lark liked that she could have this sort of back and forth with Ashton. It was comfortable and fun and put her in a good mood. He was so light spirited and funny. One of the many things that attracted her to him. The fact that she did not feel uneasy or hesitant said quite a bit, considering only a select few people in her life made her feel safe. She raised an eyebrow and smirked at him. "Oh, I suppose your right. I should work on that, huh?" Playfully she leaned over and nuzzled his cheek, kissing him lightly. They were in public so she kept it simple because really bold displays of affection in front of other people was not something she was really accustomed to. She shrugged a little, still smiling at him. "Well...you didn't say it directly but..." Most people took cliche to be bad, so it was somewhat automatic to assume he felt the same way. Lark was not particularly a fan herself but there were times when it was appropriate. She nearly choked on her water when he brought up the romance reading thing, but refrained from coughing. Still awkward. To each their own, She reminded herself, briefly feeling inadequate. She hoped that he did not have any certain expectations; a lot of those books gave people such a falsified view of the romantic world. Instead of revealing her awkwardness she chuckled and nodded in agreement. "Very true. You'd think I would remember these sorts of things." She did, but attempted to shove them to the back of her mind for the most part. Not that Ashton's interests were not worth remembering but sometimes she felt strange knowing certain bits of info.
"Ever consider that cootie shots are a lot like flu shots? They change every year." She pointed out, looking dead serious as she stared at him. Unlike Ashton, Lark could look completely serious even when she was joking. Nothing like Josh and his stoicism but pretty damn close. "So now you'll probably get cooties. Courtesy of me. I guess I should feel honored to share them with you." She finally broke the stone faced expression and cracked a smile at him, chuckling. Lark never believed in cooties, even when they were a really big deal in elementary and early middle school. She even remembered those childish games on the playground where they would tag someone and yell 'cooties!' and the person who had the cootie had to go and tag the next person. Fun game though. But for now she was going to be focused on winning a game of Nerf tag instead. Ten times more fun and the possibility of getting caught was a bit of a rush. Lark cackled as it made contact and Ashton made verbal confirmation. "Oh really? I'd like to see you try!" She felt like a bad ass ninja, hiding between aisles and dodging him. And then he caught her off guard; his Nerf dart got her right in the shoulder. "Man down!" Lark fell to her knees all dramatic and such, holding her shoulder tight before 'struggling' to get up off the floor to try and chase after her assailant. A clerk wandered by the toy section and she pulled back behind an aisle. So far so good. "That ten bucks is mine, Ash," She said a bit softer until she was sure they were free of any passersby. Looking up from where she was hiding, she found a foam sword and decided to wield that too. A good way to deflect foam darts. She finally turned another corner and looked at Ashton with a smirk. "You're going down."

Since he'd never really tried much to reason with his parents, Ashton could not be entirely sure of how they would react. Lark seemed a bit doubtful but that did not phase him too much, being the optimist that he was. He'd be an awfully pathetic one if every little comment made him doubt himself, now wouldn't he? "Sounds like something my Mom would say," he concluded fairly, lips twitching. Analynn was definitely the strict one of the pair, the disciplinarian. "Dad might give me a fair shot, though." It was Dustin who'd allowed him to take the loft in the barn as his room rather than having to stay in one of the smaller upstairs room. It was also his father who encouraged him to do what he wanted with his life, who supported the use of his powers, who let him do a lot of things that his mother would frown upon. Ashton decided that he would go to his father if he did decide to try his hand at negotiation. "Then I'll stop paying rent and find a place of my own if I have to, I guess," he decided, shrugging. Moving out was not his immediate wish since he wanted to take it easy on his wallet but he was also getting sick of being ordered around by his parents. "I mean I can understand some rules but I'm not five any more, y'know?" He didn't need curfews or stupid guidelines. He did understand the reason they'd gotten mad about him eating his brother's candy, though, and so he didn't have much else to say on that matter. He should have asked about it before he decided it was fair game. Still, he'd apologised and replaced the candy so that storm had blown over.
Though he knew they were joking, he had to reflect on the fact that Lark was anything but bad for him. It was nice to finally have a solid way of moving on from his ex. It had been a long time since Asha but it had also been a long time since he'd gotten himself a girlfriend. Now he had a girlfriend who he could dote on and completely forget about the one that he'd left behind. "Careful, Lark. I have a lot of people who care about me. They might stage an intervention." He liked that show but it could get sad sometimes to see people ruining their lives and those of their family. He liked to watch it for the success stories because it meant that not everyone was beyond help. He was cheesy, he knew that, but it wasn't like he'd ever tried to deny it. Ashton grinned and ducked his head when she kissed him, looking content and amused. He shoved her playfully but leaned over and kissed her nose in response. They probably looked awful silly to anyone else sitting around them but he had never cared much what people thought about him. He was comfortable in his own skin. "I'm direct about everything," he pointed out, being serious for once. "If I really thought it was all that bad, you'd probably be able to tell." If he didn't say it aloud he'd probably make it obvious by pulling a face or something like that. Ashton had never been all that great at hiding his thoughts and feelings. Not that he'd want to. He had nothing to hide. He chuckled when she commented on his love of romance novels, not realising at all how awkward and inadequate it made her feel. Ash was oblivious to a lot of things and it was not always for the better.
He was always nervous getting the flu shot because his mother reacted badly to it one year and it made her sick but Ashton was also afraid of getting sick and so he sucked it up and dealt with it every year. He had friends who never got their shot and never came down with the flu, either, but he wasn't taking any chances. His luck was not exactly the kindest thing in the world. "At least we can suffer together," he said dramatically, leaning on her and placing the back of his hand against his brow as if he were about to faint. Silly, silly. Running around in Wal-Mart probably wasn't the most responsible activity they could have chosen but who said they had to be responsible? "Oh, no!" he cried dramatically when she pretended to be hit. "I'll tell myself that you love me!" He laughed and then darted down another aisle so that she wasn't able to hit him immediately after she got up. She claimed the ten dollars as hers and he didn't seem all that bothered. "After we get out I'll give you it." They could exchange right here and now but that would require getting too close for comfort and he didn't trust her not to 'kill' him if he strayed that near. "You'll never take me alive!" he cackled, shooting another two darts in a haphazard manner while running. She could probably dodge at least one, if not both, considering aim was not his main concern right now. Getting away was.

Sadly, Lark could relate to Ashton quite a bit when it came to the parental control in the household. Hers had become a lot more aggressive over time with Frank, but even before her parents got divorced she dealt with the whole 'I'm parent, you're child' ordeal and it was no walk in the park. There was a serious lack of freedom and it was not fun. For her, they somewhat allowed her to do things she wanted but in the end they used it against her. She felt bad for Ashton because he was still putting up with it. "Well, I guess it'll be worth asking him first then. See how he responds to it and all that." And Lark hoped that he would not give Ashton the dreaded 'I will need to speak with your mother' or 'Did you ask your mother yet?' because then that would mean going to her directly after and if she was not the kind of person who would let up her rules because of rent then it would be futile. Poor guy. Depending on parents sucked. "I think having your own place will be pretty rewarding," She said, partially encouraging him to break away from home at some point in the future. No one could live with their parents forever, even if it was simpler financially. "Rules are one thing but trying to control every aspect of your life is another matter entirely." Lark gave him a soft, encouraging smile. "Everything will work itself out though. It usually does." Even when you hit rock bottom. For a while Lark was not even sure if her life would smooth out. Thinking on these things she did add, "I'm actually saving up to get my own place. Living in the dorms makes putting money away so much easier. Hopefully I'll have something in the next several months." How many 'several' was, she was not quite sure.
She rolled her eyes and smiled, continuing their playful teasing without much of a hitch. She liked that their relationship was so easy and simple. Lark did not feel like she had to impress him or make some sort of image for others. He seemed happy and that was all that mattered to her. "Oh, well unfortunately I'm not that easy to get rid of. Like a friendly, loving leech. Well maybe not a leech," She realized that those little creatures had such a bad reputation. Blood sucking and all. "Hmm. Like a koala. They're at least fluffy and cute." The girl never really saw herself as cute but she would much rather compare herself to the Australian marsupial than some black slimy creature that lurked in swamps. Ew. No thanks. A bright smile crossed her face as Ashton returned her affection and gave her a kiss on the nose; even the simple gestures made her feel light and happy. She shrugged a little bit at his next comment and nodded. The smile had faded a somewhat but was still present. "Yeah, you're right. I guess we're alike in that aspect." Lark was rather blunt about certain things. Over time she had managed to think before she spoke on some occasions but more often than not her mind was a pretty open book when it came to opinions. Sure, it caused a few fights in the past but oh well. Such was life. "Misery loves company," Lark said with a wistful sigh, resting her head on his and giving him a sympathetic pat on the back. Such drama queens. It did make life fun though. For what was life without playful drama? Not that serious shit; whoever was interested in making their life a living hell was an idiot.
"You tell yourself that," Lark replied, continuing to play up the act of being injured. "Because soon I won't be around to say it if I keep taking hits!" Even if they were having fun the word 'love' was still something a bit foreign to her. She had affection for her parents--or well, used to--and loved Josh and Nell and her other friends in a friend-type way, but on a deeper level? Never experienced it. Lost in thought for a brief moment Lark nearly missed Ashton darting off in the other direction, but picked up the slack soon enough. There was a slight buzz of adrenaline in her veins as she hid away behind a shelf. "Well, maybe I'll let you keep it. I'm feeling rather generous today." Was it an attempt to lure him into a false sense of security? Maybe. But it was all in fun. Besides Lark would not trade these moments for anything, not even ten bucks and a winning Nerf gun fight. Lark grinned and took another hit in the arm. "So you want me to take you dead?" She challenged with a laugh as she chased after him and made a couple of her own shots in his direction. "I don't think I could handle that." A dead Ashton would make for a sad Lark. Though if someone were to manage killing another person with foam darts she would have to applaud them. Just as she was about to turn another corner she literally ran into one of the store clerks and stumbled back. She did not look pleased, and asked that they put the toys back where they came from and leave the store before they got in worse trouble. Lark sighed. "Alright, Ash, the party poopers won't let us have our fun." She put the gun back and waited for Ashton. "I don't think we'll be very welcome here anymore." It was laughable though, and a damn good memory.

He definitely wanted a sense of independence at some point in the future. Ashton didn't want to live his life constantly relying on his parents and being that guy who still kipped in his mother's basement when he was thirty years old. He might have been shameless for the time being in admitting he hadn't flown the nest but that would all change if he got older and older and people started to notice. He didn't want to be the last in his circle of friends to move into his own apartment. Plus, the freedom would be a really nice bonus. He opened his mouth to ask her about her own plans concerning a place to live and then closed it with an apologetic chuckle when he realised she was already speaking. And answering his question. Great minds, he thought, and his lips tugged into a smile of amusement. "That sounds like a good idea!" he encouraged. "Does your job have good enough income for rent and food and all that stuff?" He might normally have just assumed that all was well but in considering getting his own place Ashton had realised how difficult living on your own really could be. You were suddenly responsible for furniture, bills, transportation, food, clothes, food for any pets if you had them... it was a big deal. "You totally need to invite me over if you get your own place, though!" he said. "We could do the whole house-warming party thing." Because parties were awesome.
He shuddered at the idea of leeches. They'd always freaked him out and he remembered being afraid to swim anywhere they were known to be found. "Ew, leeches," he said, making a face. "When I was a kid I used to think that once they stuck themselves to you they never came off and just... no. Just no." It was such a disturbing thought. They were the vampires of the Earth, black and slimy and gross. Koalas were really adorable though and his expression cleared at the thought of them. "They look like they'd make great huggers," he joked, which was true. Koalas spent all their time clinging to trees, it seemed, so they'd be even better than bears at hugging. "Why do they call it a bear hug, anyway?" His train of thought knew no bounds. Hopefully Lark would be able to roll with it easily enough. "I mean bears don't seem like they'd be that great at hugging. More like a bear maul." He laughed at his own joke. Hey, it was funny! Not so much the dying-from-bear-mauling, just the thought.
As always when he found something in common with someone, a broad grin spread across his face. He nodded but did not say anything more on the subject, content to let that stand as it did. It was good to have things in common with your girlfriend, right? He certainly thought so! Even if it was just the fact that they were honest people.
He did not think much of throwing the word love around like it was as simple as any other word in the English language. It was not like Ashton to analyse what he was saying or filter himself for fear of saying the wrong thing and so he did not notice. "I thought you said it was hard to get rid of you," he whined. "Don't go making me feel guilty, Lark! You started this war!" He jabbed a finger at her accusingly. What would anyone else listening to this conversation think? Probably that they were a bunch of crazy teenagers. Which they were, to be fair. His eyes briefly widened when she said that she would allow him to keep the money. "No, no!" Ashton insisted, shaking his head rapidly. "It's fine, really! We made a bet and all." He had no problem holding up on his end of the bargain, especially since he trusted that she would have done the same if she were in his position. His trust in other people was remarkable and sometimes it made him seem naive but it also meant that he didn't spend a lot of time doubting his friends. That was a good thing.
Laughing and breathless, he did not think too much on the consequences of their actions until the irritated clerk approached them. He avoided her gaze and looked sheepish, never dealing well with getting into trouble even though he'd come here knowing that it was going to happen. It was like when he'd broken into the vineyard with Asha simply because she'd said that it would be fun. He knew it was wrong, he'd known there was a chance of being caught, but the idea of fun had completely obliterated the thought of consequences in his mind. "Sorry," he mumbled guiltily as he passed one of the clerks, force of habit. He put the gun back and exhaled, his heart hammering from the exhilaration but his thoughts starting to slow down as the chase was forcibly given up and things relaxed. "That was so fun, though," he enthused when they were out of earshot from the people who would get them into trouble. "Are we going back to school or do you want to grab something to eat?" He decided that he could go for some fries at Burger King and a long drink.

She smiled at him and felt even more excited about the prospect of finding her own place. It was not going to be top notch or anything extremely fancy but it would be something she could finally call her own. No parents to hold her back, no one to tell her she could not do as she pleased. Frank no longer had a hold of her life and Lark was now free to become an adult. At least when it came to having her own place. She was not eager to become a full-fledged adult just yet. There were lots of things yet to be experienced. "Yeah, I actually got a raise and I think I'll make plenty to care for myself." She was just one person and had no pets or any other financial obligations other than the apartment, her food, and the car. Frank relinquished the car to her as well. "I'll be staying in the downtown area so things will be cheaper over all. I found a few prospects actually!" She looked like an over-eager child. "Maybe you'll want to join me and take a look?" It would just be good time to spend with Ashton more than anything.
"Oh..." Lark drew in a breath and looked a bit concerned. "I'm not sure about inviting you over Ash. You might have to earn that right." Of course he already had. Boyfriend and all. She was merely teasing him. After a moment of looking dead serious she cracked a smile and nudged him. "We'll definitely have to have a house...well, apartment warming party. I'm sure you'll know plenty of people we can invite." Lark had plenty of friends--and by plenty she meant plenty for her without feeling overcrowded--but Ashton probably knew way more than she ever could. He was ten times more social and was a friend magnet. Josh and Nell and Gale and a few others were certainly on the list though. They were always on the list. The list of awesomness.
She giggled at Ashton's response to leeches; they really were disgusting creatures. Slimy and probably damn near impossible to get rid of once they latched on. Ew ew ew. "They really are nasty," Lark agreed, also shuddering slightly at the thought of one latching onto her leg or something. Oh god. Her skin tingled at the thought. "Ughhh now I'm gonna have nightmares about them. I don't know if I could ever go near a murky looking body of water ever again." She looked distraught as she ran her hands down her face, but still smiled a little bit. Having these random ass conversations with Ashton were amazing. Everything was so easy to talk about and he always left her laughing or smiling about something or other. His personality as a whole was contagious. A disease she did not mind catching. Lark thought on his question for a long moment or two, emitting a small 'hmmm' in her throat. "You have the most random trains of thought, you know." She replied affectionately. She thought she would toss that out there first before giving him a real reply. "But it's probably because...if they do manage to give you an actual hug they can almost squeeze the life out of you."
Lark was not accustomed to much affection, though with Ashton she was improving. It took the girl years to hug her best friend. This kid was moving up the ladder pretty damn fast. She wasn't going to fight it or question it though.
Ever the one to play up the drama when she was in the presence of people she knew or was remotely comfortable around, it was not hard for her to limp around and act injured. Hey, Nerf darts could be...deadly? Well, more like they tickled, but that was beside the point. She had a difficult time keeping her laughter down to a minimum as they chased one another around the toy section. Two teenagers acting like eight year-olds. How marvelous. "I started it, and I'm going to use my guilt trip powers to help me finish it! You'll never get the upper hand with me." She liked to believe that anyway. Who knew? Maybe he would go all Spiderman ninja on her, scale one of the shelves, and tag her from above. That would be epic actually. Lark was actually tempted to try this, but resisted the urge. "Tch, you can take me out to dinner instead? That sounds even more rewarding." Was that a request to go on a date? Possibly. She never did like the direct approach when it came to things like that. Not that she had much experience in that arena or anything.
She sighed and did as she was told by the grumpy clerk. They obviously did not know how to have any fun. They were so boring! Why do they have to ruin a perfectly epic Nerf battle? They are just jealous of how awesome we are. Lark crowed to herself, not even embarrassed that they got in trouble. They came in here to cause mayhem after all! She did not even take the time to apologize. Why should she apologize for having fun? That was sorta stupid.
"Incredibly fun," She commented, leaving Wal-Mart with her head held high as a few of the clerks passed them dirty looks. They were probably the ones that waited until after closing time to do the same thing, too. "We can definitely do something to eat. I'm starving! Did you have something in mind or are we just going to stop at whatever place catches our eye?" When it came to strangers and classmates and distant acquaintances Lark liked to take charge and make the decisions but with Ashton and her friends she was a bit more considerate than that. Proof that she held their opinions in high esteem.

He had not yet achieved a raise in his own job, mostly because he was too nervous to ask Andy if that would be something he'd consider. He didn't like to ask things of other people or sound selfish or demanding and so the Earth elemental tended to take what he could get without argument. Maybe he would say something, though, and be up-front about it rather than slipping hints. It might be nice to have the extra cash lining his wallet so that he, too, could consider getting a place of his own. "Oh, sure!" he said brightly. He would accompany Lark anywhere she wanted him to go and he'd gone apartment-hunting with friends before. It was pretty fun to see all of the different places and weigh the pros and cons of each. He liked adventure. "Some of the downtown places are actually pretty decent!" There were those that were dirty and unkempt but if you were not pressed for time and could actually take the time to visit a lot of them, there were diamonds in the rough. It was a dangerous area at times, the downtown was, but that thought didn't cross his mind. Naivety at its finest.
Since Ashton was not entirely accustomed to her serious-faced style of joking, he was actually convinced momentarily that the concern on her face was evident. He suffered a bit of a mini panic attack as he wondered what was wrong with it, what it was that he had done. He was a people-pleaser, especially if he was dating someone, and he did not like to consider the fact that he caused any kind of a problem for that person. "Um, how?" he wondered, concerned about this. Was he going to have to pass some kind of a test? Then she smiled and nudged him and it was after a few seconds of looking baffled by this sudden change that he realised she'd been pulling his leg. "Heeey," he whined, but he was grinning and it was clear that he wasn't upset with her for tricking him. It took quite a bit to upset the boy. "I know loads of people," he agreed, bobbing his head. "Who are you going to invite? Would I know them?" He knew they had some mutual friends and all but he wasn't positive about every single friend they had in common. Not that he minded! Ashton adored meeting new people, a social butterfly.
He imagined a nightmare in which a giant leech attached itself to the side of his face and then immediately wished that he hadn't. A shudder passed through the Earth elemental and he shook his head. "So gross." He definitely wasn't going swimming again for a while unless he could be told with complete assurance that there were no creepy leeches hanging about. He gave a goofy grin when Lark pointed out how utterly random he was being. "I know," he chirped, clearly not bothered by the idea. "Oh, geez, death grip. That is not what I call a hug." Of this the Earth was quite adamant. Hugs were nice things and being suffocated to death by a freaking bear was not a very nice thing.
He did not mind the idea of taking Lark out to dinner at all and so he nodded. Ten bucks probably wouldn't be enough for that but he didn't mind that, either. He had quite a bit of money from his paycheck that went to friends and hanging out with said friends because he didn't have any particularly expensive hobbies of his own. Well, there was snowboarding and he was saving up for a new board but he was doing so slowly considering he had the rest of the year until the next winter. There was still some snow around but he preferred the height of the season to be safe. "It's a date!" He meant it both generally and literally. He was agreeing to take her out to dinner whilst also mentioning the fact that they were a couple probably meant that this was going to have some romantic connotations. That was fine by him! Their first date, hm? That would be something to see. They'd been 'dating' for a while but they'd never actually gone out to eat together. "Where d'you want to go?" he asked, since he was not picky at all.
When they were talking about finding something to eat he remembered their discussion about dates in the Wal-Mart and he said, "Well, do you still want me to hold up on my end of the bargain?" He figured she would and he was grinning, clearly in high spirits. "Cause we could do that now if you wanna." His mind had been on Burger King but on second though a nicer place might be a good idea if he was taking her out to dinner or something like that. He wasn't sure what sorts of things she liked in that respect. They might have been a couple but they still had a lot to learn about one another. That was alright. He liked getting to know people, it was fun! He hadn't known much at all about Asha before she'd walked out on him. There was still a prickle of bitterness but thinking of his ex was no longer painful. He had moved on, he was happy.

Lark clasped her hands together and smiled at Ashton with a new gleam of excitement in her eyes. Although it was just a simple venture to go apartment hunting, it was a thrill all the same. One more step towards becoming more independent and having things she could finally call her own. An apartment was only something she rented, not owned, but even so it would be leased in her name. That was the important part. "Sweet!" She exclaimed, doing a sort of partial fist pump motion to accent the happiness she felt. This was a really big deal for her. "Yeah, I was looking a few of them up and some look really promising. A cozy one bedroom should do the trick." She was going to be on her own, after all. Anything bigger was a bit superfluous and there was no need to spend extra money in that area. Not when she could spend it on bills, groceries, and spending time with people. She would prefer them to be in a different order but necessity came first over her wants.
She always found Ashton to be like, the cutest thing on Earth but it was moments like this that made him even more adorable. Her sense of humor was often times accompanied by a serious expression, and she often times forgot that Ashton was not Josh. Her best friend could probably tell when she was joking but her boyfriend seemed a bit baffled. "Oh my god, Ash," She giggled and tossed her head back a bit with a faint sigh of amusement. "You are adorable. Don't ever change." She figured that he wouldn't but she wanted to toss it out there anyway. Lark would be devastated if Ashton ever took the initiative to alter his personality in any way. He eventually caught on to her snippet of humor and she passed him a Cheshire grin. "Hay is for horses." And she nudged him again. Anyone who didn't get offended by her jokes and teasing was alright in her book.
Lark thought on it for a moment, trying to figure out who all she would actually invite to said apartment-warming party. "Josh, Nell, Gale..." She trailed off and looked down at her hands, trying to count out the people she knew and those she would feel comfortable having over to her new place. Not many. Damn. "I'm sure Josh will invite Devin, which is fine because he's a nice guy." There was sure to be alcohol involved in this. Oh god. That's going to be fun. "You can invite anyone else you want. I trust your choices." Which said a lot, considering Lark did not trust many people.
"You realize you give bear hugs sometimes, right?" Lark pointed out with a soft smile. "Maybe not spine crushing or suffocating, but still." Even so she had grown accustomed to his hugs and enjoyed them quite a bit. Affection was definitely coming easier to her and some of the hugs and kisses were actually initiated by the girl herself. Slowly but surely.
It was odd to think about, but she had never been on a date before. That was a bit unnerving, actually. It would just be going out to dinner with Ashton, Lark reminded herself, shoving the slight pang of anxiety that jabbed at her insides. They would go in, eat food, chat and laugh and be silly, and then leave. Sounded simple enough. Maybe the title "date" was what made her nervous. In her mind that changed the entire dinner experience. Not entirely but enough to make her wonder where they would go and what she would wear and all of that date-like nonsense. Ashton probably wouldn't even care about all of those tiny details, would he? "A date it is then," She replied with a smile, not sounding as nervous as she felt. When he asked about where they should go, she used a few minutes to ponder on this. Food. Food. Food. That was pretty much where her mind was at the moment and picking one particular place was going to be difficult. "I'm not really sure. It doesn't help that I'm hungry right now so everything sounds delicious and it's hard for me to choose." Yep, she tried again and failed. Everything sounded good at this point.
Fortunately Ashton brought up food after they left Wal-Mart. She looked at him with a raised eyebrow, not quite sure if she was prepared for a date right off the bat. There was no time to prepare! Lark still smiled at him none the less and gave him a little nod. "That sounds like a plan to me." All of the little flits of anxiety were nipping at her stomach, but she shoved them away as best she could. It was just a dinner date with Ashton! Get over yourself Harper. At that, Lark shook it off and ignored the nerves. "But same as before, I'm not really sure what I want. Everything sounds amazingly awesome so..." She tapped her chin, then glanced at him with a smirk. "Surprise me? I am not picky in the least and I don't have any allergies that I know of so..." She liked surprises. Not the ones that ended in some form of bad news, like the surprise she received when she came home to find her parents fighting and throwing fine china at one another. Those were a no go. A surprise restaurant sounded fun and the prospect actually helped her grow more excited than anxious about their date. "I wonder what places won't be busy though. Valentine's Day and all. Everyone is going to want to go out to dinner." She partially frowned at the thought of a long line or sitting in a really crowded restaurant. Oh well. It's with Ashton. And her first date. It would be memorable no matter what.
