Devin was not a confrontational person. Anyone who knew the blonde knew that he would rather throw up his hands and walk away than throw a punch or exchange profanities. It was a blessing and a curse in disguise; his friends seemed to hold him in high esteem and enjoy his company, as well as having fewer fights on his hands. Then again, if a fight did come to his doorstep there was no way he would make it out of there unscathed. His passive nature could surely bring on a lot of physical pain, if not verbal abuse. They usually came hand in hand, right? Sighing, Devin left the dorm rooms with a silent step, making sure that he avoided any and all scowling faces or clenched fists in the hallway. The mess hall was not that far, but it felt like an eternity when you tried to camouflage yourself the entire way there. This war was ridiculously relentless. As Devin made his way down a flight of stairs, he accidentally bumped into another student. Curse him and his habits of staring at the floor. Staring at the floor makes me feel invisible… Devin whined to himself as his eyes trailed up to meet the face of the one he ran into. Clearly, the guy was very unhappy with the blonde’s presence.
“Well well well…got the balls to run into me, huh Thatcher?” The voice sounded vaguely familiar; Devin wrinkled his nose in thought as he eyed the other male. His name was Hayden, if he could remember correctly. He was standing erect, hands clenched into fists, and a scowl crossed his features. Wow…all three in one. I’m screwed. He thought dismissively to himself before smiling at the other boy nervously. “Balls yes, anticipating running into you…most certainly not.” Devin was a jokester by nature—even in tense situations such as these, it was very hard for him to be all serious and cower in fear of another, no matter how intimidating they might be. Obviously the other boy did not like his statement or his tone of voice, and so proceeded to take a step towards the blonde, clicking his tongue. “Too bad. You did, and I don’t take it easy on earthies.” The kid raised his fist, poised to attack as Devin stood there and stared at him wide-eyed. Devin never retaliated, even if it meant physical harm. It was simply not in his nature to do so. Besides, two wrongs did not make a right, so throwing a punch would make him equally responsible and he did not want that on his shoulders.
Before Devin could even function, the other boy launched a fiery punch to his face, sending the blonde flying across the staircase with a muffled thud. It hurt like a bitch, and his face was stinging from the hit. I need to get out of here… In an attempt to stand, he fumbled down a few steps before Hayden picked him up by his jacket collar and gave him one good hit in the stomach. Devin grunted from the impact, and was then dropped to the ground like a lifeless ragdoll. “Remember this, Thatcher. I won’t hesitate to do it again.” He kicked Devin one good time in the side before stepping over his body and disappearing down the hall, leaving him in a fetal position and almost unable to move. It had been a long while since he had a scrape with another student, let alone a fire. It hurt, and it hurt bad. Son of a bitch. Rolling over, Devin attempted to get up but lack of air made that very difficult. Students wandered by his writhing body with a glance or two, but nothing more than that. It was a war; there were going to be casualties everywhere you stepped. Unfortunately, today, Devin was one of them.

Joshua did not run away from fights. Unlike most of his new and more pacifistic allies, picking a fight with him or wronging him in some way usually meant that you'd be on the receiving end of a punch sometime soon no matter how much stronger than him you were. At the same time, he did not have a death wish. The group of Thunders who had spent a lot of time heckling him during the last war and threatening violence were goofing off loudly in the back of his Biology class to the point where the teacher had actually threatened to kick them out and it was when one of them reverted to the childish habit of flinging erasers and other small objects around the room that Josh realised there might be a bit of a problem. A pen collided rather sharply with the back of his head and it took massive amounts of composure not to turn around and snap at them. Just ignore them, he thought, his grip tightening on the pencil he was holding to the point where his fingers started to go white. They were not throwing things at him in particular but that didn't matter to his temper problem. One had still made contact. That was enough. He relaxed his grip on the writing utensil and took a breath, shaking his head before going back to the essay notes. Though it would be typed up on the computer and sent in by email he preferred to do his notes freehand. It was an old habit from middle and high school where he'd not been permitted to have a laptop with him in the class.
Regardless of the fact that they'd been paying him little attention other than to occasionally misfire their ammunition and strike him with it, Josh made sure to pack up his stuff a little early and leave with the majority of the class rather than checking things over and moving more slowly. He didn't run from fights but he certainly wanted to avoid them if he could--especially when they were with people who clearly outmatched him. His power was superior to theirs by strengths and weaknesses but there were a number of them. He stood no chance and even the proud, stubborn Fire graduate could admit that. They'd almost managed to jump him one day in the halls; if his professor hadn't came by and broke up the fighting, he would have been a mess in the medical wing for the rest of the week. He was thinking such bitter thoughts about the Thunders and what he'd like to do to them if he didn't have to worry about getting into trouble that he didn't notice Hayden walk past him and similarly didn't realise that there was someone familiar in the stairwell. Unlike Devin, Josh always kept his eyes ahead and his stature proud. Old habits die hard, after all. In fact it was not until he noticed a Thunder divert their gaze and chuckle at something Josh had not seen that the Fire paused.
"Shit -- Devin?"
His tone was coloured with slight shock, not even comprehending enough to sound concerned quite yet. He stopped, giving a glare to the students who had just walked on by, and surveyed the condition of his friend with worried gray eyes. "What happened to you, man?" War was rough and so Josh understood this was probably just another result of the fighting that frequently went on but he had a sinking feeling that Dev had not deserved this. It was just like with Nell and a majority of the other Earths that he had gotten in good with--they weren't fighters, they hardly ever deserved what they got. Once upon a time he had been sided against his best friend but he'd always just ignored his best buddy in school, pretended that they didn't know one another. He'd stuck to his alliances, so much that he'd been elected as leader in his twelfth grade year. Everything had changed and now that he was seeing his old alliance from an outsiders point of view it made him uncomfortable sometimes. He'd never really considered wrong from right back then. The school had been divided mainly between 'allies' and 'enemies' and he'd never given much question to it. Josh stuck out his hand in an offer to help Devin up. "Which way'd they go?" he asked a little hotly. "'Cause I could get them back for you if you wanted." He was always willing to fight. It was probably pointless to ask his too nice bestie but hell, violence was his knee-jerk reaction to a lot of things.

The pain was beginning to ebb away; at least, he thought it was. Just as Devin assumed he could try and stand, the pain in his stomach brought him back down. The stairs were cold against his face, but the embarrassment as people walked by and snickered in his general direction made his face grow rather warm. Just as he got an arm under himself to try and make his way into a standing position (if hunched over was standing), a voice reached his ears. It was a voice that Devin wished he had not heard, because it meant that he did not get to deal with this humiliation by himself. It was one thing to deal with strangers and random faces, but Josh was a different story. Devin did not even look up at him. “Yeah, it’s me.” He replied through gritted teeth, trying to control the pain. His face felt like it was on fire—there was no doubt his skin was torched. Anger etched around the edges of his heart for a few brief moments as Josh inquired as to the event that happened only a few minutes before; clearly this happened to him—why would someone ask a stupid question like that? Suddenly he felt instantly guilty for even thinking that way. Josh was only looking out for his best friend, and his well being. With a half hearted, pained smile he looked up at the fire graduate. “Well, I had an accidental run-in with a fire student, who was not all too thrilled. I think my comment didn’t help much either…”
Devin knew that Josh was a very loyal friend, and highly protective over them to boot. If you messed with his friends, you messed with him. There was no escaping the fiery wrath of Joshua Dale if you set him off; the blonde never witnessed much of it but most certainly saw a few of the end results. Devin was just glad to be on his side. When he heard the edge in Josh’s voice, Devin became very anxious. What would he do to Hayden if he spoke his name aloud? Surely the kid would be turned into a piece of jerky. The blonde searched Josh’s face as he accepted a hand up, grunting as he came to stand. It was more painful; he should have just stayed down and waited for some of the pain to subside. Of course, that could leave him open to another attack if one of the fires or thunders decided that he was an easy target. Hell, he was always an easy target whether he was sitting, standing, or sleeping. It was never safe for the soft earthie. “Thanks…” Devin muttered as he held his stomach and attempted to touch the torched flesh around his eye. It stung like a bitch, but nothing could be done with it at the current moment. All he could do was smirk at his best friend and try to ignore the pain.
“No, no Josh that’s not necessary,” Devin waved a hand dismissively at his best friend, trying to keep him calm. Hayden was an ass hole, but did not deserve to actually die. That was not an exaggeration, either, at least to Devin. He thought that he may actually feel sorry for the guy if Josh got a hold of him for beating up his best friend. “And I actually did not see where they went. I was on the floor by then.” He was partially lying, but to be honest Devin knew he could not offer an accurate location. After Hayden dropped him to the ground and gave him a kick in the side for good measure, Devin lost all sense of direction afterwards. Down was up, right was left…hell, even purple was green. He blinked and winced simultaneously; this burn/bruise on his face was going to be tough to be rid of. Instead of allowing Josh dwell on the fight, Devin gripped the man’s arm for support as he looked around the hallway. “I was actually on my way to the mess hall…if you want to help me get there.” Devin probably could have made it there on his own, but leaving his best friend to his own devices could be dangerous, especially now. Besides, he was starving and would much rather stuff his face and try to deal with this pain than anything else. Devin offered Josh a reassuring grin before taking a step down.

Joshua did not react well to seeing a friend in so much pain. His instinctual reaction was to walk off and go find the person who'd done this to Devin, give him some injuries to cry about, but rationality reminded him that he did not know who had done this to Devin or where they'd run off to afterwards. "Fucking Fire elementals," he hissed under his breath. He got uncomfortable when others openly bashed his element being that there was still an ingrained part of him that felt that loyalty but at present it was completely overrun by anger for his friend's injuries. It wouldn't have bothered him half as much if he hadn't known Devin and the way he behaved around people. He treated his friends in Earth much the way he treated his little sister--he had a protective complex over them. He let out another string of cuss words for good measure and shook his head. "Shit." It was less profane than the rest of the words he'd just dropped but it was also quieter and more controlled. He was trying to get a good enough hold on his temper to handle the situation with a level head, which was quite the effort for a guy like Joshua. "No problem." His response to Devin's thanks was a little short but it was not his best friend he was angry with. His temper seeped into the cracks and saturated every aspect of his personality when it was set off for whatever reason--no matter who he was talking to, he sounded angry and impatient by default for a little while.
He gave Devin a searching look when he waved his hand and denied knowing where the boy had went. Sometimes it was hard to tell whether someone was telling the truth or else just covering up for something. It would be just like him to protect that asshole. He felt the same sort of exasperation toward Devin that he often did toward Nell but decided to just take his word for it in the end. Devin had been on the ground, after all, maybe he hadn't gotten a good look at where the guy that had attacked him had went. He ran a hand through the back of his dark hair, shaking slightly. He noticed the burns on his friend's face and chewed the inside of his lip thoughtfully. "Shouldn't you get that treated?" He was a Fire elemental and thus could reverse the damage done by burns but the fact that he did not offer betrayed the fact he did not trust himself at the moment. Healing took great levels of concentration and right now he was preoccupied by his anger. If he tried to help his best buddy out right now he'd probably end up making it worse. "It'll scar if you leave it too long." He was pretty sure that Devin didn't want to go around with burns on his face. Joshua knew what it was like to have scars on one's face. Unfortunately, his had not been inflicted elemental and thus he was stuck with it. He wouldn't wish it upon a friend. Maybe an enemy--no one said Joshua had very strong compassion or empathy, after all.
He was still a bit worked up in terms of anger when his friend grabbed his arm. It was a mark of their friendship that Joshua only stiffened rather than instinctively punching him in the face. He was very reckless and tended to act on impulse when he was in a temper and it wouldn't have been the first time that a simple gesture ended in physical violence. He'd never hurt Devin before but he couldn't guarantee even to himself that he never would. He gave a stiff nod and forced himself to relax a little bit. "Sure thing." A couple of Fire elementals they passed gave them dirty looks but he was glad that no one had the balls to mess with them. Joshua was angry enough that he would dish out relentless damage in a fight at the moment but his fighting style when enraged was not necessarily safe for a cramped place like a hallway. He preferred the open air and enough space that he could blast his enemy without worrying about anyone else (especially someone like Devin) being on the receiving end as well. Normally he would have sought out his girlfriend in the mess hall and sat with her. He still remembered the day back before they'd been so much as friends when she'd insisted on sitting with him. But hey, Dev needed his company more right now. The Academy students could be ruthless--if you were weakened they wouldn't usually cut you a break to be fair but attack you twice as much.

It was very evident that Josh was angry about what happened in the hallway. Not just angry…infuriated. Devin could sense it, and began to feel guilty that he put Josh in such a negative emotional state. He had enough to deal with, without dealing with Devin’s passive tendencies towards opposing alliances and aggressive people. Swallowing hard, he glanced at his best friend with concern lacing his frown. It was one thing to see him upset over schoolwork or minor issues but this was slightly bigger than that. At least, that’s how it appeared to Devin after listening to Joshua’s beautifully extended strand of profanity. He understood that Josh dealt with his anger in that way. Devin was not quite sure how to respond to any of this, because his anger levels were almost non-existent in most aspects of his life. It took a lot to get the blonde truly angry, and even then he was not much of a force to be reckoned with. Josh on the other hand was one scary mother fucker if you pissed him off enough. That was the main reason Devin did not tell his best friend the name of the assailant and to which direction he might have gone. Who knew if Hayden would even live after that? Possibly a pile of ashes, if Josh allowed him such an honor. “It’s all good, Josh, seriously.” Cooed Devin softly in attempts to placate the fire graduate, knowing that it may not actually do much good. “Let’s just drop it. Thank you again for helping me up. Although I have to admit the stairs weren’t too uncomfortable.” Humor in light of a dark situation was Devin’s way of dealing with stress or pain, even if others did not do so themselves.
With a tender touch, the blonde ran his index finger over the charred flesh. It was painful to even think about, let alone make contact with. Devin flinched before pulling his hand away and looking up at his best friend, who seemed concerned. Sure, he could go to the medical wing and get the wound treated, but that would mean missing out on lunch and there was no way that was going to happen. Not only that, but Devin had some prideful tendencies and would rather avoid further embarrassment by going and getting the injury taken care of by a professional. Instead of explaining all of this to Josh, Devin merely shrugged and made slow progress towards the mess hall; it was his way of saying ‘no medical wing’ and ‘I’m hungry’ all at the same time. “Food first, treatment later.” Was his reply, dodging a few other students on the way down. None of them were even aware of the incident. “Besides, chicks dig scars.” Devin winked and smirked back at his friend. Of course he was partially joking. He would go to the medical wing after lunch. It would put Josh’s mind at ease, and alleviate the burning sensation around his eye.
He noticed Josh was slightly tense at his touch, and instantly pulled away. The fire graduate was not one for physical contact, and of course in Devin’s frame of mind forgot that minor detail. Thus the blonde made his way down the stairs by himself and awaited Joshua to follow. It felt comforting to have his friend with him; now he was not so vulnerable to the attacks from their fellow students, and he knew for a fact that no one could stand up against Josh and win. Devin smirked to himself at the image of other students cowering in Joshua’s shadow, begging for mercy. It was a bit over-dramatic, but the picture pleased him none the less. He was safe as long as his best friend was lingering around. After a few pained grunts and groans, Devin got to the bottom of the stairs and stood there for a moment, staring into the mess hall. There were a lot of people milling about for lunch time that day—maybe going to the medical wing would be a better option. Grrrrroooo… The earth elemental grabbed at his stomach as it spoke to him, as though urging forward to eat. Devin shook his head and hobbled into the mess hall to find himself something to satiate the beast growling at him from below.

Kind words and a soothing demeanour did very little to placate the temperamental Fire elemental, even when they came from his best friend. His anger was not something that could be readily calmed just because it was inconvenient to a situation and Devin probably knew that himself. A small part of Josh appreciated the effort but that small part was currently buried beneath the mountain of anger that was crushing his other senses at the moment. A part of him was almost glad that he had not made plans to hang out with Nell because in his current state he would have had to cancel so as not to get snappy toward her as well. He should maybe have felt bad for Devin as well but considering if Josh hadn't found him someone else less friendly might have, the alternative was not preferable. Besides, his capacity for guilt was very low and usually didn't involve feeling bad for more than one person at a time. Underneath all his stoic demeanour he felt bad about a lot of things but he would only allow himself to acknowledge it on rare occasions so that he did not have to come to terms with the bad things he'd done to the people he actually felt for in his life. He did indeed 'drop it' when Devin suggested doing so but it was with a fierce expression and no ounce of humour even as his best pal tried to lighten up the mood a little. He generally had to be in good temperament for joking to have any effect on him and as standards went this was far from 'good'.
Of course, being who he was Josh did not necessarily approve of the Earth boy's decision to avoid a trip to the medical wing. This showed in the way his default scowl (default when he was angry, at least) slipped into a bit more of a disapproving but concerned frown. At the same time, he also understood. He got the whole 'pride before a fall' thing and just hoped that Devin didn't have to endure the falling bit. He wanted to insist upon it but didn't want to come across as a hypocrite--since when did he go to the medical wing for injuries, after all?--and so he just gave a reluctant nod to accept this, his features relaxing back into their scowl. Could that even be called relaxation? It was actually more of a reverse process. It was not until Devin cracked a joke about scarring that he got a real sort of reaction from Joshua. It was an immediate and very noticeable change in demeanour as his gray gaze hardened and went cold, actually glaring slightly as he fixed Devin with a look. "Oh, do they?" His voice was scathing. "I've never had that experience." It was unfair to treat his best friend like that when Dev had only been trying to lighten the mood but scars were a sensitive subject for the Fire. Not even Nell could fully evade some sort of negative reaction--she'd gotten his self-consciousness rather than his anger, but it was still clear that it affected him greatly. He hated the scar on his face. Even if girls did 'dig' scars, that was hardly consolation for the fact that many people saw it as a mark of a bad person. After all, how else would someone get a scar on their face apart from criminal behaviour?
Not only that, but scars were reminders. They didn't vanish overnight and for several years, perhaps even the rest of his life with how badly it had healed and left a mark, he would have a constant mark of the gang with him. He had other scars, too, ones that weren't as immediately apparent. Devin probably didn't even know about those, save for the scars on his ribs. They'd been subtle enough that he had always just made up excuses when he'd taken off his shirt and people had asked. Now he hardly ever removed his shirt in front of others (except Nell, accidentally, who had freaked out) so that he wouldn't get the questions. The gang had changed him. His best friend didn't know the story and so judging him was, again, unfair, but, again, that did not matter to Joshua. He at least tried to relax as they walked to the mess hall, having enough respect for his buddy that he didn't just walk off to find other company. He might have been touchy about the scars but that didn't mean he'd abandon an (injured) friend in the mess hall to fend for themselves. Especially when that friend was Devin. "How's that girlfriend of yours?" he asked conversationally, making an attempt to divert the conversation back to something less sour. "Marianna, wasn't it?" Sometimes it was hard for him to keep up with who Devin was dating at any given time. Josh had only 'dated' once and he was still with her but he supposed his countless number of one-night-stands had been pretty hard to juggle internally as well.
[... I feel bad for Dev. Josh is so... angry. x.x]

Devin rarely dealt with the bad side of Joshua. In fact, it was few and far between, and even then it was normally not directed at him. This time it seemed as though his best friend was not happy with him, and it put Devin on edge. What did he do wrong? He was the one that got pummeled in the hallway in front of a multitude of students who laughed and snickered as he writhed on the ground in pain. For a brief moment, the passive blonde almost narrowed his eyes and turned on Josh to tell him to stop acting like an ass hole, but it vanished in an instant. There was no use in responding that way, because nothing good would come of it. Besides if Josh had not come along to help him up, who knows which thunder or fire student would take a whack at him next? Anger was replaced with guilt. With Devin, he barely had room to grow into a fit of rage or carry around a temper. Josh, on the other hand, always seemed on the brink of busting someone’s face in. It was almost funny how different Josh and Nell were—it surprised him that the little earth girl could put up with Josh at times, especially when he was having a moment like he was now.
In that same instant, Devin’s worst fears were realized when Josh snapped at him about the scars. He had completely forgotten about the scars on his friend’s face—it was just meant to lighten the mood and try to toss the pain and embarrassment away into a dark corner. Instead Devin might as well have grabbed a can of fuel and tossed it on top of an already raging fire. Although Josh’s voice was level, anyone could tell that the words were harsh and cold. Instinctively the blonde turned towards the fire graduate and tossed his hands up, eyes wide as he kept his lips pursed tightly together. “I’m sorry, okay? It wasn’t intended to cause such a problem.” Devin, for once, sounded truly agitated. It was not intentional, but after being burned by a fire student, left on the stairs in pain, and then having his best friend get all pissy with him for something he did not even mean to be harmful, it built up. He tried to drop his anger and frustration, but after that statement they came back full force. Of course Devin was not one to yell and scream and throw a punch, so after he tossed hands up and passed a glare at Josh he was fine. It was as though it never happened. Devin allowed his shoulders to slump and shake his head before turning back towards the mess hall. Damn. This day just gets better and better. The blonde thought sarcastically, rolling his eyes to himself.
A few students passed by, their stares evidence enough that the burn was slightly visible. He now refrained from passing along any more light humor around Josh, because obviously it was not going to do any good. It did make Devin feel better until a few minutes before, and felt it would just be a waste of energy. The boy did not like to waste his energy on unnecessary things—like fighting and holding grudges. That’s where he and Josh greatly differed, although most of the time it never truly revealed itself until these situations arose. No matter though, Devin was not going to allow something that petty to ruin his day, and so insisted on smiling and pushing the past half an hour towards the back of his mind. It was no longer needed. As though Joshua fed off of this change in attitude, he inquired about Devin’s girlfriend. Oh…her. The blonde nearly forgot about the girls’ existence, which for Devin meant that it was over. He was not one to dwell on relationships of the past, no matter how much he wanted to. Marianna was a different story, however, because she was a cheater. Devin may be a relentless flirt and enjoy his time with the ladies, but there was no way in hell he would cheat if in a relationship. One night stands were fun, but if he decided to actually date a girl, the rules changed a little bit. Marianna obviously did not play by the same rules. Huffing, he glanced over at Josh. A grateful look crossed his face; grateful for changing the subject, but you could still see a hint of sadness in his smile.
“Ah, that ship sailed a while back,” Devin shrugged lightly, making way towards the line to grab some food. “But it’s all good. I don’t want someone who’s willing to cheat, you know?” He eyed Josh for a moment, wondering if that would also elicit some sort of angry response. A relationship was a relationship. Shit happened. That’s how life was. No sense in dwelling on it for too long, otherwise you might miss out on something better. It could be standing right in front of you the entire time, and you’d never know it was there until you tripped over it. Devin did not want to fall flat on his face every time he broke up with a girl or had a bad day—it was just not his way of living. “I’ll find someone ten times better. Until then…well, you know.” Joshua most likely understood what that meant. Until he found a girl worth keeping in an actual relationship, he would willingly find himself with girls for a night (maybe two, if they were good). In the words of Nell, “live and let die”. He did not wish for his past mistakes to die of course but…the memories could vanish for all he cared. They were useless baggage.

Did it matter to Joshua that Devin had meant no harm? No. Because when it all came down to it, no one was truly safe from his anger once something had managed to set him off. Perhaps Nell, but she was a special case, she was his girlfriend. He definitely wasn't in love with his best friend--with any of his friends--so apart from that one exception he was still incredibly volatile around everyone else. He felt the rare urge to deck Devin as hard as he could, a violent impulse that was only suppressed by the dim knowledge somewhere in the back of his mind that it would be a bad idea to hurt a friend over this. It was very hard for the graduate to think clearly and rationalize when all he wanted to do was wrap his hands around someone's throat and strangle them. Metaphorically, of course. Joshua was a fierce fighter and an angry guy but he would never have the capacity kill someone unless they really wronged him. Though he was not breathing hard or staring down his friend there was obvious tension in the set of his jaw and a razor quality to his gray eyes as he purposely looked away from Devin. He was not ashamed, he just knew that if he held the glare, if he returned it, he would not be able to resist the urge to throw a punch. Josh knew that his anger issues were serious. They were bad enough that several people had suggested he get them medicated (he did not have a mental problem, thank you very much, so he would not take drugs for it) or at least go to anger management classes. Also known as a shrink, which was another thing the graduate was not willing to do.
It was a mark of how much he trusted Devin that he managed to avoid striking out at him but as soon as he'd battled back that urge it did not mean that the Earth boy was in the clear. Hell no. Devin might not have had a long-burning anger problem but Josh did. "It doesn't matter how you meant it," he hissed through gritted teeth, his voice low. Though he was a vicious person with his temperament he, too, was not a person who often yelled. Joshua felt that he could get his point across just fine without shouting at the person in question. He was intimidating enough that it was rather hard to ignore him when he was staring you down and making threats. His threats were usually serious, as well. If he had warned Devin that he was going to hit him then it meant there was a very good chance he would but he was still trying to keep that at bay. Dev was lucky--Josh was trying much harder than he normally would have. "You try walking around with a scar on your face and just watch how the girls react." Even though he had a girlfriend and thus no real reason to care whether anyone else was repulsed or frightened by the damage to his face it did not mean that it felt good to have people stare or ask questions behind his back. His reputation of violence did not help their speculations. If it had been someone like Devin they might have guessed a car crash but, no, Josh wasn't that lucky. True, he'd brought it upon himself with his anger issues but it still didn't seem fair. "Just don't fucking joke about that shit around me."
He had half a mind to leave when they did reach the mess hall, still stewing in the leftover rage. The anger would not fade until at least an hour from now, possibly longer. His cool-down time was very long-winded in comparison to his extremely short fuse. Anger problems were not a fun thing to be dealing with. He usually liked to be alone when his mood was simmering, not even hanging around Nell (for fear that he would lose his temper with her) until he felt that he was back to normal. Fire students also had the unfortunate habit of causing unexpected arson in their earlier years at times when their anger got out of control. As he was in college now he could control this but it didn't stop the heat from coming off him in waves and filling the hallway. By the time they'd reached the mess hall he'd at least gotten that under control but he didn't feel any less bitter. For someone that was usually not sensitive at all, the scars were an instant switch. He started conversation in an attempt to divert his attention from how upset he was with Devin right now because a fight with his best friend on top of all the shit from the trial was just what he needed, right? He wasn't all that surprised to hear that Devin had moved on from his old flame. "That's too bad." He didn't sound as sympathetic as usual. Hopefully Devin wouldn't take offence in the understanding that it was very hard to show emotion when you were busy trying not to. "Have you at least got your eye on anyone else?" Discussing girls with Dev wasn't a usual past-time for him--it used to be more in-depth when he himself was sleeping around a bit. Now that he had Nell there was nothing much to say except he was taken. He never talked about their (as yet non-existent) sex life both out of a lack of things to talk about and because he respected her privacy.

Suddenly Devin did not feel like eating all that much anymore. A slip of the tongue was all it took, and suddenly his own best friend was at his throat. He knew the scars were sensitive to Josh, but to react in such a surprisingly aggressive way was actually a bit of a shock to the blonde. It sucked for him though; he was not confrontational and did not like to have people around him that were angry, especially when they somehow managed to be angry at him. It was unintentional to say what he did—like a lot of things with Devin, it was merely a slip of the tongue to try and alleviate his pain and the stress that lingered around him. He forgot who he was talking to in his moment of light hearted joking. If it had been anyone else they would have chuckled and gone on with it like it was no big deal (except maybe Nell because of Josh, be even so the response would not have been like this). The blonde pulled himself away from his best friend, keeping a good amount of distance between them now. It amazed Devin that Josh would respond to something so aggressively, especially after knowing one another for so long. Nothing Devin said had meaning to it unless he stated it to be so. With a long sigh, the blonde shook his head and limped ahead of Joshua, not even daring to look back. “I already said I’m sorry, Josh. I’ll keep saying it until you believe me…it was a slip of the tongue.” Devin blinked back a few tears of regret, pain, and sadness but did not dare make eye contact with his friend.
I’m the best fuck up in the world, The blonde thought sadly, now just standing in the mess hall wondering if it was even worth eating now. His hunger dissipated when his best friend decided to take all of his angers and frustrations out on him. First he gets beat up by Hayden for being an earth elemental, and then this. I knew I should have fuckin’ stayed in bed today. Slowly the regret began to eat away at him, and his shoulders dropped as his eyes focused on the floor at his feet. The line of people in the mess hall proceeded to grow, the people now filing past him for their food. It was the first time in a while that Devin felt like a truly awful friend. He strived to make his friends happy, and worked to help them as much as possible through pain, stress, anger, fear, or any other negative emotion. Funny how even when you try so hard it comes back to bite you in the ass, like it did today. If he were a less passive person, then none of this would have even happened in the first place. There would be no giant burn mark on his face, and there wouldn’t be some sort of weird angry discussion between he and his best friend. It broke Devin’s heart.
Absorbed in all of these self-depreciating thoughts and guilt, he hardly noticed that their conversation had carried on about Marianna. Josh responded distantly, which was to be expected, but the next question threw him off guard. What was he supposed to say to that? Did Josh honestly expect him to give any sort of reply if he was already in some sort of foul mood? Shrugging, he finally took a glance at Joshua, his facial expression flat and lifeless. No point in trying to be in a good mood now; not when others were apparently angry with him. It was just an accident… He wanted to say, but saying anything further would not do any good. It would take a while for the fire graduate to calm down, and it was just not worth it. If he told Joshua about a possible crush on Harley, then all hell would certainly break loose. Now was not the time or the place to tell him something like that. Even if, in normal circumstances, Josh would have been okay with it but gave him a gentle lecture like Nell did, Devin still felt that it should be kept to himself. He could feel the pain in his eye increasing; maybe it was about time to go to the medical wing. Then he could avoid this confrontation altogether and save them both any unnecessary drama. This took too much effort, and the stress was definitely not needed. “Nope, not at the moment. I’ll just take whatever comes at me.” He did offer up a smile towards Josh in hopes that it would help change his own mood, but it did nothing. It looked sad. His lower lip twitched faintly. “You know, I think I’m going to go to the medical wing. It’s starting to affect my vision. I can manage on my own if you’d rather go and be with Nell.” At least she hasn’t done anything to piss you off… That was not entirely true, but he felt that if this pain kept up it might. With a nod to Josh, he walked past him and slowly made way towards the entrance of the mess hall. He did not fully expect Josh to follow after how upset with him he was but…who knew. Devin would have rather been beat up twice more by his opponents than have his own best friend mad at him. He would take that any day.
