He was sure he was sick. That had to be it. Maybe it was the really cold weather or the misty rainfall that pushed him into the dorm common room...but what was it that pushed him to actually do his homework? Boredom, he supposed. With an elongated sigh, Devin flipped yet another page in the book resting comfortably in his lap. He had his legs crossed as he curled against the arm rest of the couch, eyes glazed over. He loved the rainy weather, but the cold was another story. It made him sluggish--or well, more sluggish than he normally was. At least he could get this chapter read and get it over with so he could find something more amusing to do. Video games might be in order, even though he knew Marianna would not be pleased with that. She was a pretty girl with a decent disposition but she could be quite the cat when she wanted to be. Devin so happened to notice a bit too late.
He did wonder where his relationship was going with her, but he supposed it didn't matter. There were plenty of other fish in the sea, so to speak, so he was not out of options entirely. Did that make it right to walk away from her like she meant nothing? Not really, but that was Devin's way of handling confrontations or unequally matched personalities. It kept him safe, and there was less work for him to do. That was always a big deal to the blonde--ensuring he did not have to bust his ass to keep any sort of relationship together. If he had to spend every waking moment making the effort, it was not worth his time. That was not to say he was going to avoid patching up a friendship or comfort someone when they were down, or even putting up with their attitude, but if it happened on a daily basis he was more than likely to throw up his hands and walk away. He was getting to that point with Marianna. He did notice that most of the girls he dated recently were always ending up at "that point"...it was frustrating.
Devin turned the page again, the words blurring together. What was he even doing reading this chapter now? He had no idea what was going on anymore; hell, did he even care? It was such a waste of time! He knew most of the information anyway, so reading the facts over again was unnecessary repetition. Grunting, the blonde slammed the book shut and tossed it to the other end of the couch, folding his arms childishly as he glared at it. "If we were dating, I would so break up with you," He grumbled at the book; luckily no one was close enough to hear him say it. Devin could be very mature when he wanted to be, but he definitely had his moments and was not the least bit ashamed of them...well, most of the time. Talking to a book was not something to be proud of in the least.
After he glared at the book for a good thirty seconds, Devin pushed himself off of the couch and wandered to the nearby window. The pane was fogged from the differing temperatures, his breath only increasing the fog's thickness. Lifting his arm, he took his sleeve and rubbed some of the white veil away to reveal the grounds. It was fairly empty--he assumed that many of the other students had the same idea as he did. It was just one of those days. I could go for some hot tea right now... He thought blissfully, the taste of chamomile tea lacing his taste buds. Maybe he would make some later, but for now he was content leaning against the wall and staring out of the window with a listless expression on his face.

Nell leaned against the wall, and held up her hand with a sigh. The burn there didn’t look too-too bad, but it was still a burn. Sure, she could go to the medical wing, but the girl was too used to letting these things hang, ever since childhood. Besides, she hated admitting that she was injured. And in a way, it was a little like pride. She did not have a lot of it at all, but she liked to be viewed as someone dependable. Not for her sake, but for those she cared about. Nothing was ever wrong with her, and in that way she hoped it would make others feel more at ease in coming to her for help. No one really knew about her and that was for the best.
The next object to go into inspection was the burnt potted plant cradled in her arm. It had once been a spider plant, but apparently the Fire student hadn’t wanted that at all. Only the interference from a professor saved her there. She’d have gotten off with much worse than burns on her hands if the teacher hadn’t been there to detain her attacker. Because she never fought back. If people knew what had happened to her in the past, they might wonder why she’d want to be treated that way again? But the fact was that she never wanted to hurt anyone, and the fact that she killed her mother—well, it certainly did not encourage any violent behavior in her, despite what others may say. She was not a homicidal maniac. All she wanted was for everyone around her to be happy.
And this war was making no one happy. Wars never did, unless you were sadistic or had beef with someone in another element. She was suffering from neither, and all she really wanted to focus on now was protecting her friends. Nell may have thought twice about sticking up for herself physically, but she would defend any of her friends should she see them in danger. It sparked a rare kind of anger in her whenever she saw someone harming her friends. Well, one couldn’t call it anger. That was really just reserved for Jane. But her protectiveness certainly made her fiercer than she usually was. The people she loved were the best part of her, and if she lost them, she had nothing else to exist for. All of her energy went into making those around her were happy, and the war was not helping with that whatsoever.
Nor was it helping her project, which she now had to re-do thanks to the Fire student. She held no bitter feelings, though. All she did was move on and forget about it. Before doing anything about the plant, she needed to figure out something to do with the burns. The proverbial lightbulb going off in her head, she got a cup of ice and a plastic bag from the mess hall and used a vine to wrap around her arm and hold her makeshift icepack in place. With a triumphant grin as she walked toward the dorms, she said, ”An at-home fix it, you done good, Nells.” Of coruse, her personal bragging was not something she truly believed, but she didn’t linger long on that. Instead, she ate the bag of chips she’d gotten from the mess hall with the pot still cradled under her other arm. With her hands full, there was the frustrating instances of itches on her face, and she vainly tried to blow on her forehead to alleviate one, but merely succeeded in blowing up her bangs.
Despite her issues, she made it to the common room in enough record time and to see a familiar face to boot. ”Hola, Señor Dev,” she said rather cheerfully, practically floating in, in disjuncture with the fact that she had an icepack on her forearm and a burned plant in her hands. She set it on one of the tables and asked about his well-being first. ”Whatcha up to?” He was standing by the window, and she wondered if there was something of interest out there. She blinked, and then humorously jested, ”Except sky-gazing, of course.” Her attention fully on her friend, she steered her eyes away for a mokent to see a few books laying out. ”Those yours?” she inquired, tilting her head a bit.

The world outside was slowly dying with the slow but steady onslaught of winter. Leaves flailed helplessly in the wind, their tiny stems clinging to their mother branch for dear life. Once they fell, it was over; they would eventually become one with the ground, never to be thought of again. It was depressing, but never the less it was the cycle of life and nothing could be done to stop it. Devin loved the outdoors; there was something about the grass, the water, and the trees that put the boy at ease. As he emitted another drawling sigh, the sound of another presence entering the room reached his ears. Before the blonde could emit any sort of response, the other presence spoke first, bringing him to turn his head and come face to face with Nell. She was a sweet girl, and Josh's "better half" as he often joked just to push Josh's buttons. He believed that neither half was better than the other; it took two to make the relationship work out for the better.
"Yo, Nell." Was his usual response, tacked with a boyish smile. The smile faltered, however, when he noticed the ice pack on her forearm. What on earth...? His mind raced for a moment or two, trying to process any chain of events that might lead to the quiet and gentle Nell to wind up with the frozen concoction on her arm. She continued to smile at him, obviously unaware that her new arm ornament was of any concern. Thus, for the moment Devin shrugged it off in order to respond to her plethora of questions. "I was just enjoying the view of decaying plant life," Devin joked, referring to the wintry weather occurring outside. "And sky-gazing too, I suppose. The clouds are always so beautiful." Most would find his statement odd--to find rain clouds a thing of beauty was strange, but not to Devin. It was his favorite weather, save for the cold.
His eyes followed Nell's as she observed his carelessly scattered books, which he had forgotten about until she mentioned them. A bitter scowl crossed his face, but there was a faint glimmer of humor in his blue eyes--obviously he was not truly mad at his books, but he had to put on a good dramatic air. "They were mine, but we had a fight. I told them it was over so...we are having our time apart." He crossed his arms indignantly, nodding his head at the book abandoned on the far side of the couch. That would teach it to be absolutely and horrendously boring. Maybe next time it would teach itself to be more entertaining. Then, just maybe, he would spend his time actually studying. What was the good of learning outside of class if you fell asleep in the book?
Now, on to the matter of this injury Nell so easily forgot to mention to him. If anyone had harmed her, well, there would be hell to pay. Not that Devin would do much of anything physical, but he could at least offer his fellow Earthie a few supportive words by saying he would kick their ass. To act upon the words would be Josh's job, he presumed. With a pointed finger at the ice pack, he glanced from his newly unloved books to the injury with a casual stare. "What did you do to yourself?" Devin took a look at the plant she set down on the nearby table--it looked as though it had a fight with a fire and lost. His eyes widened in realization. "Did a fire student do this to you?"

She laughed as she waggled her fingers at Devin, in a very good mood despite having just been attacked. There was little that could bring Nell down, even though she had a murder trial coming up that she should be worried about. Jane wasn’t about to ease up in her torment, and so she had constant reminders of her eventual fate. All I have to do is not think. It was hard to do when her mind worked in circles the way it did, going over ideas as many times as possible, but repression was almost natural to her now. Even when the pain was in her arms, she was nonchalant in her behavior with Dev. She didn’t realize that he’d taken notice of her injury, because he’d went on in conversation. ”Winter is on its way, I suppose.” She didn’t sound upset by it, and she walked closer to the window to take a peak. Winter is on its way. The words were foreboding—December was now synonomous with ‘trial’ and she really needed to stop her thoughts from going there. Instead, she smile lazily at the clouds hanging in the sky as Dev made his statement. ”I guess so,” she chirped. ”I wonder if it’s going to snow…” It was nice to see the beauty in everything, as the Earth male seemed to do. A lot of the Earths hated on winter, but she enjoyed it save for the one little thing she’d have to deal with this year.
Devin seemed amused when he looked at the books, and she cast her eyes over to the books. She wore a pained expression as she said, ”Tough luck, holmes. What happened?” Nel gave him a skeptical look. ”Was it that notebook? I’ve seen it with my binder, I should have warned you.” It was amazing that she could pull a straight face, but she had it down. There was the give-away twinkle in her eyes, but she was otherwise faring well considering. However, she was interested enough to turn serious when she asked, ”S’pose you aren’t too fond of your homework,” she observed. Nell could relate, even though she hated to procrastinate. If she ever laid down homework and tried to do something else, her mind would just go back to the work that was sitting undone. She tilted to her head as if considering something. ”I guess it’s for the best,” the girl continued with her joke. The year was close to finishing up, and she felt the stress with her supplementary classes. All the while, she couldn’t help but wonder if it was even worth it. What if she ended up in jail? At least there was this taste of freedom, and she was hellbent on enjoying it while it lasted.
It looked like she wasn’t about to get away with blowing off her injury, because Dev decided to ask just then and she felt like a deer in the headlights. Of course, she had a good enough façade that it didn’t show. She wasn’t one to be sarcastic, otherwise she’d have told her friend ‘I didn’t do this to myself, thank you’. Instead, she told him with a bright smile, ”Ah, this Fire student just got a little territorial.” She was used to shrugging these things off, and thankfully she had a high-pain threshold to better her mask. ”Apparently didn’t like me bringing my flowers around his parts.” Nell said all this jokingly to further emphasize the point that she was all right and Devin needn’t worry. She understood that he could be protective, but it wouldn’t do since attacks were so common in this war. If she freaked out over every injury she received she’d probably give her more stress than was worth it. As she was deft at, she steered the talk away from her and said, ”Has the war been giving you any trouble?” There was obvious concern in her voice where it had been light and fluid before. Devin seemed to be fine on the outside, but one never knew. ”What am I saying, ‘course it has,” she sighed. ”Any injuries on your part, though?” Talking about it like this made it easier to brush off her injuries—it happened to everyone, so hey, let’s not scream and panic. Of course, she’d be speaking to anyone who messed with Dev. A little bit hypocritical, but that was all right.

Devin observed Nell closely as she wandered over to the window he was previously staring out of, a small smile on his face. Winter was always a slow time of year for him, but he guessed that a lot of people felt the same way about the chilly season. The lazy part of Devin wanted to saunter away towards the couch and curl up for a good, long nap, but he could always do that when he got home. For now, the boy was enjoying the company of a friend, which was more important anyway. "It's on it's way, for sure. A bit faster than I'd like, but hey no one can tell Winter to slow down, right?" Devin queried, wishing that it were possible to tell Winter to go and find something better to do. Unfortunately that was never going to happen, so Devin had to suck it up and deal with it. "Josh said it is supposed to snow at the end of the week. I'm not all too thrilled but at least it's pretty to look at." Ever the earth lover, Devin could appreciate all types of precipitation in one way or another. He did not like wandering in the cold temperatures, but staring out at a blanket of white as the sunrise breaks the horizon...breathtaking.
His attention was drawn away from the outside world and back towards reality--a place he always hated to go, but knew there was no way to escape the inevitable. Devin pursed his lips a little. "Ah, just have other stuff on my mind. Never mind the fact that reading text books is beyond boring so...I just got fed up." He could not help but emit a laugh at Nell's comment; her personality always managed to cheer him up, possibly without Nell herself even realizing it. With an emphasized pout, he nodded towards his friend, looking emotionally pained. "Yeah, the cheater. I should have known that she would leave me for something better one of these days." Although they were discussing something completely random and his voice was light and joking, inadvertently Devin was actually making a hit at himself and his relationship with Marianna. The boy always felt like people could do better than him, both as a friend or in a relationship. The insecurities always went unspoken, or were at least stated in a roundabout way. "It's most certainly not fond of me either. I'm glad we went our separate ways. The notebook and binder will be infinitely happy together." Devin quietly wondered if this was how it would end up with his current girlfriend.
Soon, Devin's silent musings were cut off when Nell discussed the events leading up to her wrapped arm and torched plant. His subdued anger edged into his heart for a brief moment before allowing it to dissipate; he prided himself on being laid back and non-confrontational, so Devin always strove to keep it at bay as best as he could. This particular situation was difficult though, given that his best friend's girlfriend was injured. "Well, at least you got some ice for it. Those fire students really ought to put leashes on one another and hold back their own." Devin passed a glance at the plant as Nell continued, his feet carrying him in its direction. His hand cupped the plant gently, Devin lowering his head to examine the damage. "Stupid flower haters. They're just jealous because they can't be as pretty." Did he just complement a plant? Yep. No surprises though; Devin was ever the complementary person, even to objects that could not appreciate them with a verbal response.
Once again, the earthie was yanked by the proverbial ear into the world of reality. Yes, the attack on Nell was real, but he knew that if she were seriously injured he would know. That did not prevent Devin from making a mental note to keep track of that burn, however. If Devin allowed anything to happen to this girl, he could not forgive himself, and he was pretty damn sure Josh wouldn't either. Josh did not rely on Devin to protect Nell, but it still lingered in the back of his mind. Now, he had to focus on her inquiries about his dealings with the war, to which he duly responded with a grin and a wave of the hand. "These wars always give me trouble, but I think injury wise I'm pretty safe." Devin examined his body for a moment. "I had a few confrontations with a thunder student and a group of fires, but I took off as fast as I could. One of them did catch up to me...got a good bruise on the side of my face. Otherwise though? All good." Physically he was fine, but emotionally Devin was not quite himself. This Marianna issue was really nagging at him, but it was best not to bother Nell with something like that. Hell, it should not even be bothering him, but it was.

With a soft smile on her face, she joked with Devin, ”Well, unless we can phone up mother nature and tell her to quit it, I s’pose not.” She enjoyed watching the seasons run their course. It was still so brand new to her. This was the first autumn that she could really enjoy without fear of staying out in the open too long. If her mother had ever found out about her sneaking out… Nell didn’t let her thoughts travel to that place. All she knew was that she loved any season because she loved this world and whatever it threw at her. Snow included. Speaking of snow, apparently Josh had said that it was expected by the end of the week. ”I wonder how much we’ll get,” she said. She liked to watch the news before going out to do anything, so she knew what traffic was like and how the weather would turn out. Especially before going to work—it was always nice to be prepared. ”If we get a lot, I’ll be out making snowmen. And little igloos, like every proud Canadian does.” She was still not very used to Canadian winters. She was a city girl with Earth elemental sensibilities. So far, she’d only had to suffer through one winter when she first came to the country. It was when she built her first snowman with Ashton, and then another with Dani. Her first snowball fight, too. Though she had yet to build an igloo…
Nell didn’t ask what else it was that Devin had on his mind, as he explained when he caught sight of those apparently wretched books. Her philosophy was that if he wanted her to know, he’d tell her. So she left him to his privacy as she appreciated when anyone did the same for her, and simply said, ”I feel ya. Everyone needs a break.” She didn’t know anyone who could actually enjoy schoolwork. There was Josh, but otherwise she was certain that no one got a thrill out of their hand cramping out from having to take notes. There were subjects that she enjoyed, and she always pushed through her work, but of course she’d prefer more time for play. She felt as if she were always busy—though she rarely complained, even to herself—but she always persevered like a good little student. Apparently, though, Devin was having a tough time. She breathed a laugh at Devin’s humor, a welcome relief from the stress that was usually plaguing her. Especially now that she’d been attacked. ”Something better?” she reiterated as if shocked. ”I think not. She lost something very good.”Even though she said this jokingly, she winked to show him that this comment could also be taken in all seriousness. She thought highly of Devin, and if this were a real situation, then she’d be doing her best to reassure him that he was a great guy. ”There’s plenty of fish in the sea,” she assured him, patting his shoulder with her bright smile still affixed to her face. She wasn’t about to scold him and tell him to do his work, because that would be strange. And she believed in what she’d said—everyone needs a break once in a while.
She was glad when he didn’t press on the subject or force her to go to the medical wing. The girl didn’t like being forced to do anything. However, she was more independent than rebellious. One person had too much control in her life before, and it terrified her to imagine having to go through that again. So her relief was apparent when she said, ”My survival skills have saved me once again. I should be a girl scout. Or get a show. ‘Nell’s Adventures in the Wild.’” She didn’t like to talk about herself seriously, but when she was joking she was certainly fine with using herself as the butt of it. And even though she sounded confident, she had a lot of survival skills thanks to a book she used to read when sneaking out. When living with her mother, it seemed necessary. But she didn’t think herself good enough at anything to get her own show. ”I don’t imagine any Fire would appreciate having a collar around their neck.” They were the ones with the tempers, after all, but they also seemed to have this pack mentality going for them. It was scary sometimes, especially when you were their enemy. She was lucky it was only one she had to deal with—they liked to attack like wolves most of the time. ”I don’t know, I’ve seen some pretty flamboyant flowers,” she said lightly when Devin went over and held her dead plant. It was almost heartbreaking to look at, but she’d get on that soon.
Right now, she was more concerned about Devin and how he’d been holding up. Her expression softened from her wide-eyed, worried look when he assured her that he was okay when it came to injuries. ”That’s good,” she said, another relieved note entering her voice. She didn’t like to see her friends hurt in any way. But when he told her about the incident with the Thunder student, she winced and let out a heavy breath. ”Jeez, this war is ridiculous,” she said, a hard edge to her voice that wasn’t anger. She rarely came near anger. She blinked at Devin and saw that the bruise was no longer there, so it must have been a while ago, but that didn’t make her chest hurt any less when thinking about it. In all honesty, she was attached to her friends in the way that they were basically her existence. She lived to make sure they were okay. And it made her feel powerless to know there was no real way to help even Devin. She couldn’t end this war, she didn’t even understand how it reall happened. ”I guess you have experience in this, though, haven’t you?” she said, speaking of the fact that he’d been attending the Academy longer than her. It was ironic considering that he was younger, but she’d just enrolled this year. And what Devin didn’t know was that it was as a fugitive. ”Just promise that you’ll take care of yourself if anything else happens to you. Or come to me, since we all know how much of a medical expert I am.” She motioned to her arm, though she was completely serious. She was always there for Dev, whether he realized this or not.

Devin grinned at his friend; he loved her positive attitude, and with the world as dark as it was nowadays, it was a refreshing drink of water. "Hey, don't question my abilities," Devin warned humorously, waving a finger. "I have mother nature's number--I'll give her a good talking to and we'll see what we can go with this weather thing." With a chuckle the blonde rounded the side of the couch and sat down on its comfy cushion, his eyes focused on the poor plant on the table. That was, until the girl mentioned snowmen and igloos. His face suddenly brightened, his upper body rotating to look at Nell. Casually he slung his right arm over the back of the couch to make his position more comfortable. "Don't leave me out of that one Nells. I wanna build snowmen! I mean, I'm not a fan of snow but if I get to build a snowman count me in."
It was really strange that Devin disliked the snow, but the thought of building a snowman was quite appealing. One would think after living in the area all of his life that the snow would have lost a lot of its luster--hell, most of the residents of the area probably had summer homes down in the U.S. just to escape Winter's fury. And although the cold slowed Devin down a great deal and he dreaded the season for the most part, he could at least take the snow in stride and enjoy it with friends. What better way to try and speed up Winter? He leaned his head back on the couch and looked at her childishly. "I am invited to building snowmen and igloos...right?"
As if on cue, the relatively light and happy conversation took a slightly downward turn as his thoughts drifted right back towards Marianna. And, if that weren't bad enough, Nell seemed to be able to see right past his comment. How was she able to do that? Not many people payed much attention to his indirect self-cutting comments, but this girl pushed right through and to the heart of the matter without so much as blinking an eye. He sighed and dropped his chin on the draped arm, looking like a forlorn puppy. "I hope you're right Nells. I really do hope you're right." His forlorn expression only lasted for a brief moment and he brightened up again as though it never happened. "You should definitely have your own show. Oh oh, and start working on an Australian accent. That gets them every time."
He was just as upset about the war as Nell was. They were both quiet creatures and did not take to violence easily. Protective tendencies over their loved ones, yes, but to attack others without warrant was simply not hardwired into their personalities. One glance at the withered flower was enough proof that their enemies were ready and willing to attack the innocent and defenseless without a second thought. It upset him, but not as much as it possibly could if he were anyone else. That's what made Devin, Devin. "It is ridiculous. I just wish they didn't exist...a waste of energy and time is all they are." Devin's eyes narrowed for a moment, but when he looked back at her a smile crossed his features. "Enough experience to make me hate it even more. But I think we'll survive this. I've got your back, if you have mine."
It was just like Nell to be concerned for the well being of others and put herself on the back burner. As much as he disliked that attribute in her--it worried Devin at times, especially with an ice pack wrapped around her forearm--he could not help but admire it. No wonder Josh was so enthralled with her. He got himself a good catch, and Devin could not ask for more in a friend. With a smirk he took his index finger and drew an 'x' over his heart. "I promise. Cross my heart, hope to die. I won't stick a needle in my eye though because technically that would be breaking my promise. Dying might mess that up too...so I'll just promise." He grinned at her brightly, adjusting himself on the couch. The day did not turn out to be so bad after all. At least his mind was taken off of the homework and Marianna, even if just temporary.

Nell rolled her eyes at Devin. ”Mhmm, well you get on that, vato,” she said wrly. Spanglish was becoming almost natural for her now, thanks to the fact that conversations with her father were usually entirely in Spanish. And she was glad that people didn’t get as offended as she thought they would—most just ignored it, since they knew that it wasn’t a vital part of the conversation. However, she knew doing what her grandparents always did would not be very kind. Entire conversations in a language someone did not understand was very rude, and something she did not like to do, unless she was messing with her aunt. Nell leaned against the couch Devin had sat down on, placing her hands on the back of it as she tapped her shoes against the floor. It was difficult for her to remain completely still. ”What, you think I was going to exclude you from my snowplay? Silly Dev,” she chided lately. ”Depending on how much snow we get, construct our being of snow soon.” You won’t be around for too long during the winter. And maybe never again. Lately, it seemed she couldn’t stop her thoughts from going to dark places. She wondered if she should mention to Dev that she was going to be leaving for—what was expected to be—a few weeks. If things didn’t work out…much longer. Of course, what she was telling her close friends, the ones who would notice her absence (hopefully), was that she was going on vacation. She just wondered when she should bring that up to Devin, if at all.
I might have to leave this place. Oddly enough, Canada had become more of a home to her than New York ever was, even though she knew the city she grew up in to be much better than what she’d experienced. The Academy had been her new beginning, and now it may be the only taste of freedom she’d get. ”You can do whatever you want,” she said in that appeasing motherly voice as she ruffled Dev’s hair. ”Hey, we could have an igloo-building competition.” She actually didn’t know how igloos were made, but that was just a technicality. She was always up for fun, especially with the limited time she had left. Nell was going to soak up everything she could before she had to fly to New York and sit in that courtroom to face the strangers who’d be decided what she deserved.
Nell didn’t really have a clue about Marianna. She figured that Dev might be going out with someone, but she was always at the ready with sincere compliments. When there was an ego that needed to be fed, she’d be there with her honesty. And Dev looked so sad right then, that she wanted to shower him with all the compliments she could devise. No one should be sad like that. ”Of course I’m right, I’m always right,” she said, flipping her bangs out of her face. She would have done a whole-hair flip for effect if she didn’t have her hair clipped up. ”Shame on you for doubting me.” Nell smiled to show that even though she was saying this as breezily as any conversation turned out with her, but her words—as always—were genuine. She had great faith in Devin. ”I don’t know if I can pull that off. Thinking of sticking with a stereotypical Latino accent. Or thickneing my New York one.” She lapsed into a stereotypical dialect, gesturing with her hands in exasperastion as she said, ”I’ve been shleping for hours through this swamp, and what do I find? It’s a freaking alligator gnawing my arm! I’m shvitzing right now.” It would be rather ironic for a city accent to be found in a survival accent.
It was ironic that a pacifist like her had a life filled with violence up until almost a year ago. She wished that it didn’t exist in the world, and though she may be naïve, she was not that ignorant. Some people reacted to events with violence when differences came into play, and there was nothing they could really do to change that. World peace may have been something people strived for, but as long as people had differences, it would be near impossible. Still, the world was a bright place for Nell, because she knew that anything she went through now was better than what she’d come from. It was a dogma of hers. ”We’ll just have to endure,” she said with a bright smile on her face. ”We might not be able to fix anything, but as long as we do have each other’s backs, we’ll be good.” She was lucky in the last war that the meeting with Alexandre had worked out and gotten the Fires to back down. After that, the Thunders had been ganged up on and their hunt for her blood had ended and months of stress were pretty much over with. Of course, the alliance was still bitter and she was sure not many of them liked her, but as long as they were no longer trying to kill her, that was pretty damn good.
Devin went into his rhyme, and she shook her head in an amused expression. The war for her was definitely made better by his presence in the dorm. Of course, she had an apartment and a cat to return to—and also a boyfriend—so she wasn’t living in the dorms, but it was still a safe place to hang out. The Earth boy definitely had the right idea. She smirked when he mentioned that sticking a needle in his eye would not be a good idea. ”Yeah, that’s just a little counterproductive,” she joked. ”That rhyme is a little too ironic for this situation. Pinky promise?” She waggled her pinky. Since they were sticking to childish antics, she had one of her own. Nell didn’t have much experience with childhood games and the such, and even though she wouldn’t admit it since it sounded strange, the rhyme Devin had used was one she only became aware of later in life. She felt like her growth had been stunted thanks to the lack of a childhood.

Devin made a light clicking noise, followed by a typical ‘gotcha’ hand gesture as he leaned over the couch, arm now dangling down towards the floor. It was actually quite the comfortable position, once you got settled into it. Nell found a place on the back of the couch and seemed to settle into a state of ease, even though her shoes tapped incessantly on the floor below. He chuckled; it was amusing to see people who did not know how to sit still. Hell, if Devin could sit around all day and play video games, you could be sure that he would. Skateboarding was a fun sport to be sure, but even then you can stand still as you ride down the sidewalk. The boy never took to practicing too many moves on the board—it took a lot of work, and too many of his friends had been injured in the process of stunt practice for him to feel safe trying them out on his own. The last thing Devin wanted was to come to class with a cast on his arm or leg, and explain it to the teacher. It would be embarrassing. The thoughts of shattered bones dissipated when Nell discussed the snowman building time. Devin grinned.
“Hey, I was just asking,” Devin replied, tossing his limp hand up into the air with a smile. “I wasn’t sure if it was going to be a you and Josh thing…or a group thing.” The blonde was, to a fault, considerate of others and their time, even if he did not want to be excluded or left out of an event. He hated imposing on people, and it made him feel extremely guilty if he thought that maybe they did not want him tagging along but said yes just to please him. That simply would not do. Devin had, however, yet to mention to his friends that tiny detail but thought it was not completely necessary to voice out loud. If they really wanted to know, they would ask. Otherwise Devin was not going to go out of his way to say anything. He couldn’t help but pass her a cheeky smile when she ruffled his hair—sometimes the girl felt like his mother. Sadly, he enjoyed it. He loved Judith for sure, and she was a good role model and parental figure, but it did not erase the fact that he did not have his mother anymore. Devin missed her, and not a day went by that he did not think about her. “A competition sounds awesome. I’ll have my own team! That is…unless we get a fourth person to join us.” Devin instantly thought of Marianna, but that was pretty much over in his mind. Well, that put a damper on things for a moment. I could ask Harley…
“I never doubted you for a second,” Devin lied sweetly through his teeth, nudging her with a forefinger. “It is you who doubted my doubting…abilities…” He raised an eyebrow for a moment, thinking over the sentence before realizing it made absolutely no sense what-so-ever. Devin chuckled and shrugged it off—Nell would surely understand what he was getting at without furthering the confusion. He was really good at that. Either way, he knew that Nell meant well and was looking out for him. Her words meant more than she probably knew, but did not feel the urge to voice it at that moment because their conversation continued on seamlessly. Devin rolled his head over the pillow and listened, blue eyes looking at the world upside down. It was really neat, this perspective. He laughed at her commentary with the mixed accent. “You should definitely do it. It would be like Steve Irwin but female, and with a totally awesome accent. The show would get millions of viewers every week. I’ll be a few of them.” His eyes trailed from the ceiling and the window over to his friend, who was now also upside down. A smile tugged at his lips, which from this view would look somewhat like a frown. This amused Devin greatly for some reason.
After a few moments of thinking about what she said, Devin rolled himself back over into an upright position, pulling Nell into somewhat of a side hug. He was a hugger to the maximum; being touchy-feely was his way of expressing his gratitude and affections for those he enjoyed being around. Friends especially. Some people did not like these sorts of affections, and after a few times Devin was still learning who enjoyed his hugs and who did not. “Always got your back, Nells. Always. Not only because you are awesome and a good friend, but because if I didn’t Josh would eat me.” The last part was mostly in jest; Josh could very well protect his girlfriend without Devin’s help, but the boy was protective by nature and thus would do it with or without his best friend’s permission. Josh would simply have to get over it. He would feel guilty if something happened and something could have been done to prevent it. Devin pulled away as she criticized his little rhyme, and shrugged his shoulders casually. “Hey, don’t be dissing my rhymes!...even if they are a little counterproductive…” Devin gnawed on his lower lip as though being scolded like a child before seeing Nell’s pinky wiggling in his face.
It was a simple gesture; a gesture of little meaning in the long run, but if you were big on keeping your promises and made it a daily goal to uphold them, then a pinky promise was a good motivation. The physical tying of a pledge to assure that it was taken care of. Devin chuckled a little as he entwined his pinky with hers, shaking their hands a little as if mixing the two motions together into one. “I pinky promise.”

Nell shook her head emphatically. ”Nope, nope. It can be a whole party of peeps thing.” She and Josh did a lot of things together, but it wasn’t like she would exclude her friends from anything. Well, unless her boyfriend had a problem with them and it would be safer to keep two people apart. She knew that they didn’t have all their friends in common, and that was okay. They had Devin, at least, and she was pretty sure Josh would be chill with him coming to do something. They weren’t just a couple who only hung out together, after all. ”And hey. You can ring up your people, I’ll ring up my people, we can have our people meet. It’ll be real fun.” Nell held her fingers in the universal sign for a phone. She was pretty serious, actually. She enjoyed large groups of people and hated being alone for anything. ”Do you have anyone in mind that you want to bring along?” Nell teased him, waggling her eyebrows. Being carefree was something they could both share in common, and it made it easier for the two of them to be childish, she supposed. She liked being childish, because she never had the chance to be one back when she was younger.
Swatting Devin’s hand away, she said, ”Touche.” She had been doubting his doubting abilities. ”But I shall never doubt your redundancy abilities again, either.” It was nice to be able to joke like this with Devin in the light of a war. That’s what friends did, after all—cheered each other up without even trying. And Nell’s friends always did a very good job of doing that for her, even when she had an ice pack on her arm and the sting of the burn was not all lost on her. She might have a high-pain threshold, but it didn’t make her immune to injuries at all. Nell just didn’t let it show, refused to show whenever she was in pain. Because she’d get over it. Whatever happened to her now would be better than she’d ever had before. She snorted as he rolled over like a puppy dog. ”You’ll be a few of them?” Nell questioned with a wide grin. ”I never knew that you knew how to do mitosis and split yourself apart.” She pursed her lips as if thinking about it still moving her legs around. ”I’ll think about it. Gotta contact the Travel channel, pitch them my ideas.” If she were to seriously consider, she knew that she didn’t have a chance of being great. But that was okay. She was sure Devin had a big chance at making something of himself.
She roped an arm around his shoulder when he pulled her into a hug. The girl understood that Devin was a huggly kind of person, and she definitely didn’t mind. She was affectionate, too. Except when it came to the people who didn’t like to be touched. It was easy to discriminate rather quickly, however. But when it was for being reassured by a friend, she was certain that everybody liked physical comfort. She didn’t know what to say to the fact that she was an awesome and good friend, but she did chuckle when he mentioned Josh. A thought came to mind, but she hesitated before speaking it aloud, though it was just a brief moment. If she said it, she’d be revealing something about Josh that he’d seemed uncomfortable in admitting to her before they were even friends. He and Dev are tight. ”He’s a vegetarian,” she pointed out when he mentioned being eaten by the Fire graduate, grinning. She really didn’t talk much about Joshua, but it was better when it was with someone who she knew her boyfriend trusted. Nell held up her hands in surrender, ”I ain’t a hater.”
Smiling when Devin took her pinky, they hooked them together and she told him, ”And if you break our promise, may the plague descend upon your house.” Moving around the couch, she dropped to her knees in front of what once had been a plant, scrunching her lips together in thought. Instead of talknig about what she was going to do with the pot, she asked Devin, ”So you have anything else planned for today instead of procrastinating?” She tilteed her head to sen him a cheery smile, showing that she wasn’t even poking fun at his choice to ignore work. Nell actually wanted to get her plant back not only for the grade, but because it really did hurt to see it all…burnt and withered.

“Excellent,” Devin replied with a grin. It felt good to be involved with his friends, even though he knew they enjoyed their time alone. He was not a nosy person, nor did he force himself upon others to gain attention or have someone hang out with him. If anything, Devin did really well on his own, but if put with people he did just as well. He went with the flow and tried not to let much upset him. When Nell mentioned bringing an even larger group into their snowy escapades, Devin nodded in agreement and now felt eager for the first snow. He did not like the cold in the least, but if he could spend it in the company of good people he could most certainly survive the chill of winter. The smile faded briefly when she inquired as to whom he would want to bring along, and for once Devin seemed to falter over his words. When Devin noticed Nell wiggle her eyebrows the boy brightened up again; he did not want his friend to see that he was struggling with some sort of internal battle. I could bring Autumn…but then again Harley… Devin felt torn, but sighed with a final decision, not knowing what sort of reaction it would bring. “I was kinda hoping maybe Harley…” He trailed off, mulling it over. “I dunno but I might be…sorta interested.” Their bantering was always in great fun, flirting back and forth effortlessly. But, being the flirty romantic Devin did not realize that he was actually attracted to the red head until it was too late.
When Nell swatted his finger away, he couldn’t help but laugh; she put him at ease with her light and airy personality. He could not remember a time when they said a cross word to one another—in fact it was quite the opposite. Devin was not a confrontation person anyway so even if something were to be said, it was more than likely it did not come from the passive blonde. That’s why he always found himself getting beat up, but he did not dwell on that for too long. The dorms were safe. “No, no you shall not. My redundancy abilities are indeed very redundant. I practice a lot.” Devin nodded at her with a smile, his rather short hair still shifting up and down with the movement. With a brief glance, the boy turned his attention towards the window. It was beginning to fog over all the more, the cold from outside fighting to break through the glass panes. It was a good thing the room was warm and cozy, otherwise Devin would put himself into hibernation mode and stay under his blankets until spring. He tried that once, but he got hungry and had to cancel his hibernating plans. At the sound of his friends voice, Devin focused on her once again with his bright blue gaze. “Of course I’ll be a few of them,” He said with a serious expression on his face. “I’m worth at least…three or four people, maybe more.” It felt good knowing Nell could play along with him. Josh did too, though, and that made Devin happy. “Hey, I can be your agent. I’ll get you in for sure.” He had no idea how that was supposed to work, but it was all in good humor anyway.
Although Nell and Joshua had been together for quite a while now, Devin topped the earth girl in years of knowing his best friend. It was of no new news that Josh was a vegetarian, but he knew that Nell was merely playing along with him, and so decided to roll his eyes playfully as he hopped off of the couch and stood nearby, hands in his pockets lazily. “I’m sure he’ll make an exception if I do something to piss him off.” Devin chuckled at the image, then shrugged it away. He could not think of his best friend being angry with him for any reason, and thus saw it an unnecessary train of thought. She threw her arms up in surrender in regards to his rhymes, and all he could do was chuckle. It was a corny rhyme to be sure, but hey he had run out of ideas and that was the first thing that popped into his head. At least he had the capability to rhyme. He knew a kid that thought ‘orange’ and ‘orange’ could be used in a poem and it be considered rhyming so…at least he was better than that.
Devin knew his friend was not entirely serious, but she would most certainly be disappointed if he did not come to her when he got hurt…or at least avoid walking into a world of pain. He patted her on the shoulder in reassurance after their pinky promise shake, and grinned a toothy grin. “Hey, I always keep my promises. You know that. Hell, I can keep secrets too…but usually because I forget them afterwards…” It was true. Devin had the worst memory sometimes, and was guilty of forgetting phone numbers, homework assignments, and even secrets his friends had shared with them. That certainly made their secret safer, right? The boy wandered over to the window again and placed his forehead on the glass, exhaling slowly to watch his breath fog the pane completely. He then began to doodle on it, leaving a simply smiley face once done. Nell queried about the day’s plans, and so he turned to respond when he saw the girl examining her burnt plant. Devin frowned. “Well, other than that absolutely nothing. Do you need help with your plant?” Lazy he may be, but a shitty friend he was most certainly not. If it made her happy to get her plant fixed, then that would be his plans for the day.

The Earth girl noticed Dev’s shift in expression, the happiness falling from his face for a moment like turning over a bottle and draining out the water. ”What’s up?” she asked with some concern. If she didn’t get a real answer, that would certainly be okay. It was probably just her being paranoid or something, anyway. She didn’t want a key to her friend’s innermost thoughts, she was just hoping that hedidn’t suddenly feel bad about something. Either way, it was left as an open answer for him to either answer or wave away. He brought up a name that sounded a bit familiar, and paused a few moments to think about it. ”Harley? You mean the Fire girl?” They had met briefly during the war, after she saved her butt from a Fire student who’d actually meant her harm. Nell found out that the girl had ditched her element because she trusted Josh more than she trusted the alliance, and the Earth student was thankful to know that somebody had common sense. ”I’m guessing she took our side again?” Otherwise, she didn’t think Devin would be reckless enough to get caught up with a Fire, especially uring a war. It would end up getting both of them hurt, most likely. Instead of asking more questions, she smiled at him and said, ”I’m sure she’s interested,” she said with a teasing tone, moving her eyes up in a mischevious expression.
Nell rolled her eyes as she shifted the ice pack on her arm so it better covered the burn. If she had gone to the medical wing and had it treated, it would have disappeared quickly enough, with only a temporary red mark to show for it. But now it would fade slowly with time, probably leaving an unattractive white mark for a while. She didn’t mind much—as long as she didn’t die from it, she was okay. ”I can tell,” the girl remarked about Dev’s redundancy powers, smirking a bit. She resisted wincing when she felt the stinging sensation in her arm intensify for a moment, as if reminding her that she was injured. You’ve been through worse. Mind over matter, that’s all it took. Reminding herself that she’d been in more physical pain than this before helped steel herself against it. ”I’m counting on ya, D,” she told him seriously, tilting her head and nodding. She’d count on him for anything, but it would be interesting to see if he had the ablility to get her a show on cable television. It almost made her want to take it seriously. Nell mussed up the black of her clipped up hair and said, ”I don’t think you have anything to worry about.” She and Josh really were protective over one another, but she trusted Devin.
Speaking of trust, she also trusted him to keep his promises. And okay, she definitey trusted too easily all the time. If someone charmed her with good mannerisms and smiles, she trusted them. If someone betrayed her—and her, not someone she cared about—she would give them a second chance. She was just as easily manipulated, as long as it wasn’t against any of her morals. Nell just wanted to make people happy, wanted them to be happy. So as long she cared about Devin and he further proved just how good a person he was, then she would trust him. After all, for her, it was better to trust too easily than to not trust at all. That was what happened to her mother. The woman had closed herself off from the world because she’d put her trust in people that ended up betraying her. Nell would rather have her heart broken a thousand times ever than to never allow herself to trust again. ”Good, then when I tell you my secrets, I won’t have to go all Men In Black on you and erase your memories.” Hypothetical, of course. Nell never told her secrets, never talked about herself. There was a lot that Devin didn’t know about her. Hell, he didn’t even know if she had parents or not. And she knew that shouldn’t matter in a friendship. Two people didn’t need to know everything about each other in order to form a bond. ”And I’m serious about the plague.” Nell raised her eyebrows when she looked at the boy.
As she tapped her fingers against her chin, she listened to what Dev was saying before turning her playful brown eyes on him. ”Sounds like you have a pretty full schedule, hopefully you can pack that all into one day.” She herself had a few things to do after school, actually, including work. Nell could never be satisfied with sitting around and doing nothing—she had far too much energy to be kept sitting still at all times.Even when she was on her knees in front of her plant, she had to be doing something, which meant focusing her eyes on the poor thing. ”If you want, knock yourself out,” she offered. She wasn’t going to be a snob and tell him to stay the heck away from her project and she could do it all by herself. She was independent, but if her friend wanted to do something, she’d let him. To explain what she was doing, she said, ”We are supposed to accelerate plant growth, and I had a spider plant that looked like it’d been growing for a few weeks before…well, yeah.” there was no need to explain what happened, and as she moved her hand up to see if she could at least revive it, she felt a few drops of water fall on her leg. The ice pack was melting slowly, but she’d take care of that after the plant. The damage to the plant was too great to even attempt regrowth, so she told Dev, ”I think I might need to go out and get some more dirt. A new plant will be in order.”

Devin nodded towards Nell, looking childlike with his expression. That, of course, was not very hard given that he had a very boyish face to begin with, but it was even more so none the less. “Yeah, her.” He replied quietly. Devin was not entirely sure where Harley stood in the war, but he could make a fair guess that she was going to be siding with Josh, so it might be safe to say she knew where her loyalties lay. Even if not, there was no denying that he had a small thing for the fire girl and her element could not really alter one’s feelings so quickly. Some people may be able to turn away from someone they deemed an ‘enemy’, but Devin had a very hard time turning down others or refusing friendship simply because of a few differences he deemed rather petty. Obviously Joshua felt the same way, or he would not be siding with the Earths and Waters in the war. Devin shrugged a little at the question. “I’m guessing so.” It was strange, having so little to say in a situation that may have called for a lengthier conversation. He simply could not bring himself to go into detail about it, which was not like Devin in the least. The boy could not help but grin, however, when she prodded him about Harley’s feelings. His eyes shut halfway as he looked at Nell. “Well, I guess we’ll have to find out later on.”
Nicknames were an important part of Devin’s friendships; it meant they were comfortable with him, and more often than not they were a sign of affection. Joshua called him DJ quite often, which was a nickname used quite often by friends, some referred to him as Dev, or Thatch, or even James. Yeah it was his middle name but it was still a term of endearment none the less. Thus, when Nell called him ‘D’, a nickname not yet used by anyone he knew, Devin could not help but smile softly at her. It was nice to be on such comfortable terms with people like Nell. “I will never let you down Nells,” He stated with a chipper tone in his voice. Unlike some people, however, Devin was serious about never letting her down. Sure he might stumble and fall a little along the way, but it would never be with an intent to break a promise to the earth girl. He admired Nell quite a bit. Thus he was sure she meant what she said in regards to not worrying about his best friend pulverizing him. Joshua was not an aggressive person towards his friends but you could be damn sure that if Devin did not stop something that could be stopped there would most likely be a long talk between them about it.
Ah, secrets. To some it meant your deepest desires or your biggest dreams, and to others it was an attempts to conceal themselves from the entire world—their past, their emotions, everything. They never crossed paths with another human soul in attempts to stay guarded and completely safe. Joshua was just like that, and Nell also seemed to be rather secretive about her life too. That did not bother Devin in the least. If they wanted to keep their lives hidden, that was fine by him, so long as they did not lie to his face over and over again. He would much rather they say ‘I don’t wanna talk about it’ than watch them smile and tell him a lie just to keep secrets. Lying made Devin feel like he was not a good enough friend to even have the courtesy to tell the truth to, which would be rather upsetting. Josh and Nell have at least been honest with him. “Nope, because I erase my own memories,” Devin joked, pointing to himself with his thumb. “I’m just that talented.” His smile faltered a minute at her threat about the plague, but you could still see it glinting in his bright blue eyes. “I know you are Nell. I know.”
It felt good to be useful. Even if his offers to help were not always readily accepted, it made Devin happy to help others and bring a smile to their face. That was one of the reasons he enjoyed his sense of humor and easy going personality; it was hard to get overly upset about a harmless joke, and difficult to get angry at someone who strives to avoid confrontation at all costs. Sure Devin had his enemies but those were mostly an alliance difference as opposed to it being towards him as a person. It was always an elemental hate as opposed to a difference in personalities or interests. Although…the elements were linked to their personalities…but not entirely. It was just enough to cause a bunch of disputes all of the time, which usually ended in war—like the one they were in now. Devin smiled brightly at Nell as she accepted his offer to help. He could be sleeping, or skateboarding, or going out to entertain himself, but if Nell did not mind his company or his help, then he would much rather be here. “I know it’s just so damn full…I never know what to do with myself.” He said first, then proceeded to move onwards to the discussion of her poor plant. “Yeah…torching it made that attempt a little counterproductive, but I’m sure we can fix the problem soon enough. I guess the fire student was more eager about deceleration tactics.” Devin glanced back out of the window, pondering over his thoughts for a moment before looking back towards his friend. “Whatever you want me to do to help, let me know. It’s your project so…”

Nell nodded in acknowledgment. There was the very good possibility that several Harleys were running around the Academy, but she figured that chances are there might just be one in the Fire element. It worried her a bit, for Devin’s sake, even though the redhead might have ditched her element again. Coming into the Academy at the beginning of the year—it seems so long ago now, look at how much has changed—she didn’t really have a clue about the alliances or even the elements. She never knew about her father because he’d never used his powers around her, she just figured it out when she met the Sinclairs and Fuenteses who harbored an age-old grudge toward each other and both hated the black sheep that was Nell. However, the first war did well to erase most of her naivete. She was now careful about what she did and who she interacted with. Of course, there was Josh, but they had met under…special circumstances. And she thought that almost being shanked by him outside of a bar was a special circumstance. And he had ended up betraying his element, as well, and she felt bad about that no matter what. ”Hopefully so. It’s not very safe to be going outside of either of you guys going outside of alliances during the war.” She wasn’t about to give him a long lecture, however, noting how he seemed to be acting a bit strange, even though he saved face by the end. She offered him a smile to help lighten him up, but she didn’t pry any further—it was his prerogative, whether he wanted her to know or not.
She was glad to have someone who wouldn’t let her down, even though she wasn’t really worried about herself. But still, she was used to being disappointed and hurt, but she still liked to put her trust in people like Devin. If she didn’t, well…it was a scary thought. She playfully rolled her eyes at Devin’s remark. ”Because you’re just so incredibly awesome,” she said. Actually, it was true—he was pretty fucking awesome. She always thought highly of her friends and the people she liked, and she wasn’t shy about it. The girl was very good for those with egos and lack of self-esteem. If she felt it was needed, she would remind her friends just how awesome she thoughht they were. He seemed to waver at her comment, and she only laughed. No, Nell would never wish harm on another. Ever. Even with her aunt, she never thought that she would like to see her dead or anything of the sort. And she’d never go out of her way to hurt someone.
Nell fisted her hand against her mouth in thought, listening to Dev’s words. Yes, this particular Fire student quite enjoyed proclamation like that. ”Well, live and let live,” she said with a light sigh to show that she was willing to move on and wasn’t going to focus on the fact that some trollish dude sent her project up in flames. ”Or in this case, live and let die.” The song came to mind, but she resisted breaking out singing. She had pretty good restraint. Dropping her hand, she smiled at Dev and said. ”Well, are you willing to make room in your schedule for a little outing?” Nell would rather work on her project outside, after all, because even though the common rooms were full of flowers and earthen tone, she liked wide open spaces. She held up her arm, and shook the now water-filled Ziploc bag. ”And I need to stop by the mess hall and get more ice.” And quite possibly food, of course, since it was near impossible for her to be around food and not eat. She picked up her plant from the table and held it against her chest, starting on the way out of the dorms and toward the mess hall, making sure to keep an eye out for anyone who might have foul intent. In the mess hall, she got her ice and refilled the bag, then headed toward the main doors of the building. ”You have any preference?” she asked Devin, and not just to be polite but because she would rather have his opinion more than anything. ”Garden, the lawn, the lake…?”

Devin knew all too well the dangers of dating someone outside of his element—in fact, the boy never strayed away from the water or earth girls before. Damn this horrible timing… Devin thought bitterly to himself, although is expression on the outside remained rather neutral. He knew that Nell meant well for him (and possibly Harley), and so there was no need to get upset at her mini lecture. At least she was kind and understanding; after all, she was dating a fire elemental. Yes, it was different because Josh decided to switch sides completely while Devin remained faithful to his element and the alliances, but it was slightly difficult to tell yourself not to be with someone simply because of a difference in element. He and Harley got along quite well and Devin was…well, he was Devin. It was hard to say no to friends, let alone a pretty girl. Nell probably knew that, which was why her chastising stayed short and sweet and without nary a foul word. The boy smiled softly at her as he leaned against the wall, sighing faintly. “I know Nell. I can’t help myself, you know? Everything will be fine.” It was just like him to try and stay positive, even in the worst of situations. Maybe that was what got him in so much trouble…
It was amazing how quickly the bond between good friends formed, especially when two people were very similar. Devin and Nell did have their differences—she was less of an open book than he was, and was way more trusting of others than he was. Devin was a man of second chances, but this girl could forgive and forget just about everything possible. It was admirable though; if there were more people in this world like her, it would surely be brighter and full of peace. She was easy to be around, and the boy knew if he needed to find solace he could go to Nell. At her complement, however, he slightly frowned. He tried to be the best friend he could be, but ‘incredibly awesome’ was a bit much. Devin had his skeletons like any other, and held just as many faults. No matter how much you try to please others, sometimes it is simply not enough. He knew he would fail sometimes, and fall through on promises (aside from the current promise made to Nell about injuries), so such a complement was not deserved. Devin shook his head. “No, I’m not. But you are. One of the best people I know.” That was no exaggeration or a lie; Nell really was one of the best, besides Josh and Autumn and Harley. He could not ask for more amazing people in his life, and would not go back and re-do anything, even if it meant being rid of that horrible step-mother of his.
Thought were disrupted at the sound of Nell’s voice. Devin glanced at her, then at the plant; it was already looking worse off than before from the trauma it received at the hands of the fire student. Just like human nerves, a plant responds to shock and pain in a very similar manner. Poor plant—they should hold a funeral. Devin smiled and nodded at her invitation to go on an outing. Even though he could be really lazy, it could not hurt to wander the grounds for a while and get some fresh air. Once it got too cold, you could be sure the blonde was going to hibernate in his dorm most of the winter. It was simply not his season (unless it involved snowmen and igloos). “Sure! Let me just grab my jacket.” Devin made a leap over the couch and towards his dorm room to grab his leather jacket. It was brown leather with soft, white wool lining the inside. It was his favorite. Once he slid it on he came back out and locked the door. Nell had her plant nestled in her arms and began to walk out of the dorms, Devin following. “Yeah, water won’t really help.” Through the halls they wandered, dodging other students here and there along the way.
Nell seemed on edge; there were plenty of people walking this corridor that might be itching to throw a punch or two. Because of that Devin was also on edge and instinctively rested his shoulder against Nell’s to ensure she was next to him at all times. Protectiveness was hard wired into him. When they got into the mess hall, Nell grabbed herself another bag of ice, and willingly he followed her towards the main doors. “I guess we can eat something after? I’ll be starving by then,” Devin rubbed his tummy dramatically, making a childish pouting expression. When she asked about where he would like to go on their outing, Devin merely shrugged. This was her project; wherever she wanted to go was fine by him. Then again…this was Nell. Always thinking of others. He smiled. “You choose, I follow. This is your project, remember? I’m just offering a helping hand with anything you need.”
