Barely an hour into his study session and Ashton could already feel the words slipping out from the cracks and crevices of his brain. He read a single sentence six times over and didn't take in a word of it, and it was only then that the Earth leader accepted this might be a lost cause. The book thudded shut as he let it fall flat on the desk, stretching his arms out in front of him and leaning forward with a large yawn. A glance toward the windows showed that it had since gotten dark outside, the grounds hidden under the shadows of dusk. He would much rather have spent the whole day on the grounds on a day like this, it had been really sunny and warm outside and a large group of his friends had decided on taking a dip in the lake. But he was dipping closer and closer to a warning with his school work.
It wasn't fair. Why did the leaders have to work so much harder than everyone else? They not only had to make sure that their element was kept in line and that no fights broke out, but they had to struggle to keep their grades--all of their grades--above a B average. Ashton was not stupid and could even manage above average in a couple of classes, but there were others that dragged his overall marks down. He was terrible at History, mediocre at best when it came to Math and English, and Gym was passable but still rather irritating. He had never been someone that studied a lot in previous years. In public school the work had been doable without it; he'd never gotten the best grades, but they'd been passing ones. This was a nightmare.
Groaning softly under his breath, Ashton pushed the book away from him and contented himself with merely sitting at the desk. After a few minutes he pulled out a penny from his pocket and started spinning it on the flat surface. The first couple of times were terrible--it gave a couple feeble turns and then flopped over onto one side or another. However, on the fourth try it actually started to whirl around quite fast, so that the three maple leaves on its one side were only a blur of copper colour. Unfortunately for Ashton, he didn't realise that the sound of the penny clattering against the desk was loud enough to attract the attention of others that might be nearby. He wasn't trying to disrupt the peace and quiet, he was just bored and restless.

After awhile of studying in library you brain does eventually turn to mush and for Aramina that time had finally happened. As soon as she had finally given up on whatever she was studying, for the fact that she couldn't even remember what she was reading. As soon as she put the book down she felt really tried and couldn't wonder why. Maybe it was the fact that she hadn't had too much sleep in the last couple of days or it could be the fact that she had had so much trouble getting the new practices in her classes. As soon as she had begun to place her head on the table she began to think about the task at hand and why, for the millionth time, she couldn't get it right. This whole thing just seemed to happen over and over again!
After a while of just thinking it over Aramina just began to drift away, her eyes beginning to droop and her head starting to get closer and closer to the book that she was just reading. As soon as her head hit the desk and she began to fall asleep she heard a loud noise in the distance and it sounded like it came from somewhere in the library itself. Aramina grabbed her thing, slipped them into her messenger and began to look around to find the source of the noise itself.
As she turn a corner she saw a boy that looked about her age sitting a at desk and he looked bored. So, of course the first thing that wen through her mind was the fact that he was the one who had made the noise. Well, that or the fact that there was a coin on the table in front of him. Either one could be the reason but she was sticking with what she thought of originally. She walked over to him and said in a quiet voice,
"You really must be bored if you are going around making loud noises like that..."

Ashton jumped slightly when someone spoke from nearby, not having expected the interruption. With the jerking motion of his hand the penny spun right over the edge of the desk and clattered loudly onto the wooden floor, making him wince as he stuck out his foot to trap the coin under it and mute the noise. He had heard what the girl said and her intrusion had only caused him to make even more noise that he'd originally been making, so he felt a little bad for only disturbing her further. Turning to survey whoever had spoke to him, he deduced immediately that she was neither an Earth student, an eleventh grader, nor indeed anyone that he knew. Being their leader he was acquainted with all of the Earth students and by this point in the year he was pretty sure he knew who all of his classmates were as well.
"Sorry if I was bothering you," the Earth elemental said genuinely. A lot of the leaders would get cocky and insist to be treated with respect, but Ash knew that their title didn't mean that they were superior to other elementals in any way. They got a lot of respect and were treated like the leaders that they were, but they were all still people. It was in his belief that you should apologise (and mean it) if you upset someone or disrupted their studying. He didn't see a book in her hand but he figured that she might have just left it wherever she'd been sitting in order to come and tell him off. She hadn't sounded irritated when she'd spoken, it was only the words that made him think that she might be a little irked.
Smiling a little sheepishly, he admitted, "I guess I am pretty bored, yeah." He gestured at where his study material lay abandoned. The Earth leader bent down and picked up the coin that had fallen, though he returned it to his pocket rather than playing with it again. He wasn't arrogant enough that he'd do something like that. Gaining a more friendly demeanour now that apologies were out of the way, he asked, "I don't think we've met; what's your name?" It was well within Ashton's nature to try to befriend almost anyone--that is, as long as they were on his side. He didn't necessarily hate those of Fire and Thunder alignment but they were enemies and thus he didn't go out of his way to be friendly toward them. He didn't mean them any harm as long as they left him alone, but that was as far as kindness extended. "I'm Ashton, Ashton Raleigh."

"My name is Aramina, Armaina Longheart. It is really nice to met you Ashton." She defiantly hadn't seen him before but being the way that she was, she didn't know to many people. As soon as she could see what he actually look like she could tell that he was older than herself and defiantly not from the same element, but that one was defiantly a guess on her part. A very wild and not really understood in her mind type of guess but a guess none the less. Walk toward Ashton she began to wonder what she was going to continue the conversation with. The many already overly used ones coming to mind first. You know the 'What about that weather, really sunny!' or the 'So how are you today, done anything different then you did yesterday when I asked you the exact same question?' and trust me, the world could do with a few less of them. Looking down at her feet she began to think about what she was going to say next, considering that was what you would expect would happen in a normal conversation or at least the ones what she had had previously.
"So.." Aramina began as she began to rock back and forth on her feet continuously. After while of just thinking it over, the long train of thought and finally come to a conclusion to that she was going to do next. The long, long, long train of thought might I add which felt like it had gone for a couple weeks, or hours, or even minutes, only went for 26 seconds. She looked back up to see Ashton once more and Aramina finally said, "What you working one there? Must be just as boring as mine is if you are spinning a coin on a table for entertainment?" And as soon as she said that she regretted it. The last time she opened her mouth like that was in Ninth Year and she got a 4 Day detention for doing so! That was something that she never wanted to do again.

Her name wasn't one that he was familiar with but this didn't bother Ashton in the least. He was always up for meeting new people, even if the circumstances were a little strange. Such as meeting someone in a library by disrupting their studies, for example. She didn't seem too bitter about that and so his smile was genuine as he said, "Nice to meet you, too." It wasn't just simple formality of conversation to him. When Ashton told you that you looked good or that it was a pleasure to be acquainted with you he was generally serious. The boy wasn't a good liar for he became rather flustered and uncomfortable when he tried to get himself let off the hook for something.
He might have continued conversation, but as the girl started off with a 'So...' the Earth elemental respectfully fell silent and looked at her expectantly, wondering if she had something to say. She didn't continue immediately but it would have felt like interrupting if he'd said anything, so Ashton just shifted a little in his seat and waited. A soft sort of chuckle brushed past his lips when she finally spoke, asking him what he had been up to that had bored him so much he'd felt the need to spin the coin. "Homework," he said, gesturing at the books with mild distaste. "Work that I'd rather eat lead than be doing, really." He'd never had a knack for studying like some people. He protested a lot and said that he worked better on assignments if he didn't study for them (which occasionally proved true) but he didn't want to run the risk of failing a class. Losing his position at this point in the year would be rather humiliating.
Since she wasn't stalking back off to where she'd been before his coin-spinning had interrupted her, Ashton assumed that maybe she was interested in having an actual conversation rather than working. Never one to avoid friendliness, Ashton smiled and gestured at one of the other chairs at the table he was sitting at. "Why don't you sit down?" he suggested. He kept his voice down so that the librarian or other people in the library were not too upset with the pair but he didn't think he could bear the idea of just silently going back to his book. No, he wanted company and Aramina had come along at just the right time. "So," he said, his tone almost playful, "what were you up to before I disrupted you?"

She was shocked, they both just happened to be doing the same thing before he began spinning the coin. 'I guess what homework must be just boring for everyone, unless they like homework that is.' Aramina thought to herself as she sat down in the seat that Ashton had been gesturing to. For a couple seconds she just looked out the window to see the sun in the sky, wondering it was windy outside. Getting distracted was fun just not when you were trying to make a new friends. As soon as she realized this she just heard what Ashton had said. At least the most of it anyways. Something about what I was doing before I came to try to see who made the noise ect. ect.
"Well you see," Aramina began before she starting to think about what she should say. The obvious would be to just to tell him what she had been doing but even that makes me sound boring. 'Might as well see what happens.' Aramina thought to herself before she continued, "Pretty much the same as you. Just homework, some things are just too boring to handle if you know what I mean." She said not thinking about what she was saying. Looking up she wanted to see what his reaction was to her answer, just being a little worried, not really knowing why though.

Ashton chuckled slightly when she said that she'd been doing homework, not at all surprised by the fact that she'd been so easily lured away from it. He had wanted nothing more than to be able to ignore his studies and so he figured that he could not be the only one in the library with similar feelings. "Well then you should be thanking me," he said, as if he had done her a great favour. "After all, I got you out of it." However, the soft laugh that followed these words and the twinkle in his bright emerald eyes suggested that he was only joking around. Ashton worried for a moment that this was in some way wrong. He was a leader, didn't that mean that he was supposed to be setting an example or something? Oh, who cares, he told himself. She's not an Earth student. Besides, who would enjoy this stuff? It was much more fun to sit here and talk than to sit here and read. Could it even be classified as reading when you didn't take in a word of it?
"I think," said Ashton importantly, as if he were about to impart some sort of epic knowledge onto her, "that we should ditch this joint and go outside." He couldn't mask a grin and he glanced toward the window as he said this. It was so nice outside compared to sitting in a stuffy library with nothing but books, coins, and fellow bored people for company. He would much prefer the summer sunshine. Besides, he was an Earth elemental. They practically lived for the outdoors and there was no other explanation needed for why he wanted to get out there right about now and bask in the sunlight. "So, what do you say?" he asked, wondering if she would come along. Maybe she wasn't quite as daring as he was at the moment.
The ironic thing about all this was that he wasn't normally the type that would skip class or skive off studying. Asha had made him a little more willing to approach danger, but he tried to avoid thinking about Asha and how quickly that fast relationship (or had it been a relationship at all?) had gone the drain. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. He pushed such thoughts out of his mind and looked expectantly at Aramina.

"True, very true. You defiantly have a point there. Thanks for getting me out of that. I swear that I can't seem to get anything at the moment" Aramina said after she had heard him softly laugh to himself. She looked toward him and began to laugh a little her herself for a couple seconds, there wasn't much more that she really wanted to do at this point. She really, and I mean really, didn't want to go back to doing her homework after the trouble that she has been having recently with anything that she had been assigned. The fact that she could get anything done while she was in this state of mind was beyond her but, it's school, you have to get by with what you can and get as much as you can done in the short amount of time that the teacher give you.
After she had heard what Ashton said she began to wonder what she should do. as much as she wanted to get out of here, if she didn't get this done then she won't be able to get this year over and done with, you know; until her teacher decides to give her something harder, that is. Unfortunately that was the way that school went and if you weren't used to it then tough luck. Looking back at Ashton she finally decided, "You know what, sure. I can get Dani to help me with this later." She said hoping that he had something in mind because at this point in time all she wanted to do was run around outside, hoping that it was at least a little winding around.
She stood up, grabbed her back and look around for a little bit, "Well, what do you have in mind Ashton?"

Ashton didn't have a clue who Dani was but he was definitely up for heading outside and so he grinned when she agreed. "Great," he said enthusiastically, already standing up as he looked longingly out on the grounds. His homework lay abandoned and while he knew that he was probably going to regret this decision later as he realised he didn't have it done and it was due the next day, in the heat of the moment all the Earth leader cared about was his freedom. He had never been the sort of guy that could be 'responsible' all of the time. He did his best and his parents had raised him right but he much preferred lounging in the outdoors rather than sitting in libraries. He wasn't even that much of an avid reader, though it wasn't like he was allergic to books. He liked them when they didn't need to be read for his classes and all.
He shrugged easily when she asked him what he had in mind, not really having brought anything to mind. "Haven't got that far yet," he said with a laugh. He could see a group of students kicking around a soccer ball but didn't feel any strong inclination to join them. He didn't hate sports but he'd never been particularly into them, either. Most of the guys were of the sort that he wouldn't click well with. Competition and sport wasn't his thing. As he watched, one of them gave it a hard kick in the wrong direction and it went soaring off into the forest, bouncing and rolling into the trees. "Certainly not what they're doing," Ash remarked, smirking a little. It was teasing of a good-natured sort. He wasn't the type that would laugh at anothers expense if something was seriously wrong, but this was harmless and playful and so he figured that it was alright.
He was in a rather amiable mood--this was obvious by the lazy grin on his features as he led the way onto the grounds and into the warm sunshine. He paused for a moment to let it soak through his skin. "There's the lake, the cliffs, the gardens... where should we go?" He always felt so overwhelmed when he stepped out onto the grounds, like he didn't know where to head first. "Should we see if we can find the boundary line?" The grounds of the Academy were very large, but he knew that deep in the forest there was a fence to stop the students from going too far out and getting forever lost in the surrounding wilderness. The Academy was so remote that it had been a necessary precaution. It also stopped outsiders from just getting in when it took their fancy.

Aramina wanted to know what he was talking about for a second there. She began to look out the nearby window to see that he was defiantly right with what he had said, the stuff they were doing looked like it had taken years of practice to get it right. With the experience that she had with balls, she could quite easily get hit even if she wasn't playing. Walking away slowly she began to half listen to what he was saying until she heard something that worried her a little. The one place on the campus that she hadn't been to. The Boundary. She had heard stories about the place but had never really wanted to go. "Um, the boundary huh." she said with a little of worry in her voice.
She looked around and decided what she was going to do in her head. Facing her doubts and actually doing something was a hard thing, in her mind, to do. "Lets do it, to the boundary we go, if you still are up for it that is?" She questioned wanting to sounds like she was a little more confident then she actually was, hoping that she had done that well she looked back at Ashton and laughed silently to herself.
Picking up her bag and placing it around her shoulders and turning back to him she began to wonder how many times he had actually been to the boundary before he had mentioned it a couple minutes before. "I have to confess something," She said has she, once again, laughed quietly to herself as she continued, "I have never actually been to the boundary before."

Ashton blinked with mild surprise when he detected what he thought might have been worry in the girl's voice. Now, as excited as Ashton was at the prospect of exploring the grounds--he always loved exploring, probably because of his affinity for Earth--he certainly didn't want to make anyone feel like they had to do something they didn't want to. He was just searching for the words to say this and had even opened his mouth to assure her he didn't mind amending his plans when she spoke again, this time affirming the decision to go in a much more confident tone. He closed his mouth smartly and looked surprised for a second time, but then his lips broke into a friendly smile when Aramina confessed the fact that she, just like Ashton himself, had never searched for the edge of the Academy's grounds.
"Don't worry about it," he said in a complacent tone, waving a hand and now actually grinning, hoping that his cheerful approach of the situation might make his newfound friend feel a little better about what they were going to do. If, that is, she didn't change her mind. And Ashton was going to give her the opportunity to do so as soon as he confessed his similar experience. He could have lied and said that he'd visited the boundary line hundreds of times--it would have made him sound much more cool and it also would have reassured Aramina that it was not dangerous. He was not, however, a very confident or accomplished liar. So Ashton confessed, "I haven't either, and it's a bit sad since I'm both a junior and the Earth leader." He laughed at his own lack of experience. He didn't mind a chuckle at his own expense. "So I figured it was about time I saw what that whole boundary thing was all about."
Of course, it probably wasn't as exciting or dramatic as he was making it sound. The only thing that was 'intriguing' about it was that it was so far from the edge of the trees that most students never ventured far enough to reach it. Apparently, if he'd heard right, it was just a long and low fence that encircled the edge of the Academy's property on all sides, through mountain and forest alike. It was a warning sign for the students that they might not be able to find their way back if they ventured further. And it was a place Ashton had never been, so as an explorer by nature, he wanted to go. "It's okay if you don't want to," he now said, shaking his head. "I know it's not for everyone and I wouldn't judge a change of heart--we could always jump in the lake or climb the cliffs or something. Or we could explore the dungeons, but outside seems much more appealing on a day like this." There was nothing but genuine honesty in his tone--he really meant that he'd turn back if she wanted to.

'At least he sounds a little more confident then I do' Aramina thought to herself as she looked at the guy that was standing in front of. She, other hand, had a feeling in the back of her mind that something was different. Like something was holding her back from saying something that she didn't know. Letting that sink to the back of her mind she decided to listen in on what he was saying, considering she hadn't been paying attention for the past 30 odd seconds. Hoping that she hadn't missed anything while she was in her own little world.
After listening to what he said, Aramina couldn't help but laugh a little to herself. Turns out that, even though he was a Earth elemental and the earth leader, he himself hadn't been to the boundary. Well, at least he had wanted, just like herself, to figure out what all the fuss about the boundary was. "At lest we have the same thought about that." She stated agreeing with the earth boy in front of her, "Heaps of people in my dorm are always talking about how awesome it is and stuff." Aramina continued with a smile on her face.
From what she heard the boundary was scary as hell and if you didn't have the stomach to handle it, then you might as well not even try. After hearing Ashton say that we didn't have to go she could tell that he really wanted to go, though he just wanted to make sure that she was alright with the decision to go to the boundary. After thinking about it for awhile she just thought that there was only one thing that she really wanted to do. "Don't even worry about it, I really want to go to the boundary." She said with a smile on her face, then continued, "Come on, lets go!"

Ashton gave a light laugh when Aramina said that people talked about it in her dormitory. It was at that moment he realised that he had no idea what this dormitory was, and if he was about to go running off into the woods with a Fire elemental he figured he ought to know about that. However, she did seem rather pleasant to him, so he wasn't going to judge her negatively even if she was a Fire student. He usually tried to give people the benefit of the doubt if he could. "What dormitory would that be?" he asked curiously. He would have followed this with an explanation that he was an Earth student, but seeing as he'd said that he was the Earth leader he figured that he didn't need to clarify anything further. Only Earth kids could be Earth leaders, obviously. Not even the graduates could be leaders--though Ash suspected that most of them didn't want to, because they were busy with their erratic college schedules and didn't want to bother themselves by bossing around a bunch of underclassmen.
Smiling, he added, "They're probably over exaggerating to make everything think they're cool." He couldn't exactly hold it against anyone, even though that probably was what they were up to. He definitely felt a little left out when they all talked about it. But really, it was just a fence. What was so cool about it? Probably nothing, but those that did take the time to journey for hours through the forest and find it just didn't want to say that it had all been for naught. "A graduate told me that it was just a little wire fence. You can step right over it, she said." He wondered if anyone ever had been brave (or would you call it stupid?) enough to cross the boundary and go into the real wilderness beyond. It would be remarkably easy to get lost amongst the Canadian mountain country and then you could go hungry and starve just because you'd wanted to do some exploring. He knew that Maple Hollow, ten minutes away even by car, was the only settlement even remotely close to the Academy. Unless you were lucky enough to stumble upon the Hollow after a while of walking, Ash figured that you were shit out of luck. He tried not to think too hard on that. We're only going as far as the boundary and then turning back.
His features split into a grin as she agreed to go with him. "Alright," he said, and he led the way out of the library and onto the grounds. They passed the students kicking around their ball but other than acknowledging them with a friendly smile and a jerk of his hand, Ashton paid them little extra attention. There was a bit of a pathway through the first little bit of the forest where most of the students would go, but he knew from experience that it stopped at a certain point a little ways in and if you wanted to find the boundary line, you had to walk a lot further in. "So what grade are you in?" he asked Aramina as they walked, wanting to keep a light and friendly conversation going so that it was not just silence that hung around them in the air. "I don't think we've got any classes together." Again, he had told her he was a junior and so didn't feel the need to clarify. He'd tell her again, if she'd forgotten and she asked, but other than that he'd just let it stand on its own.

Aramina was just a little shocked at this point. 'I can't believe that I forgot to tell him that!' She thought to herself in a angry tone. Just thinking that to herself she began to wonder why she hadn't told him that in the place, after all, she did knew his anyway. After hearing him laugh a little to herself she looked up and decided to finally tell him. "I am in the Wind Dorm, don't worry, I am not a Fire Kid." She said in a polite tone of voice, laughing a little to herself, knowing what he was thinking. It was common knowledge that the Earth kids hated the Fire kids and vice versa. After seeing a few fights during school this had become very obvious. Hearing what he had to say about the boundary, she couldn't help but believe in what he had said, considering what the people in her dorm at actually said made no sense what so ever. That and they always seemed to want to scare the hell out of her.
"Trust me," she started looking over toward Ashton with a semi-smile on her face, "I totally have to agree with you on that one. They always seemed to want to scare me, so it would make sense." Laughing a little she wondered what he was actually thinking at this point. He was about to walk to the boundary, a place that he had never been before, with a person that he had just met, who also had been to the boundary herself. In her mind, she would never really do this, but what the heck. She had to go there eventually, right?
As soon as they got to the first steps on the grass she wondered how far away it would be. Though at the same she was wondering who was going to talk first. None of them had really said anything to a while and it was just starting to getting a little awaked. Just as Ashton said something she realised that neither if them really knew much about each other. "I am in the Tenth grade," She said as she looked over to Ashton with a smile on her face, "Whatabout you? I have to agree that I haven't seen you in any of my classes."

Wind students were always a strange lot. It wasn't that each individual was an oddity, but describing the element as a whole was almost impossible. They were often a mix of everything and so when someone told you upon first impression that they were Wind in affiliation, it was hard to tell what sort of personality you were about to become acquainted with. He got a good sort of vibe from Aramina, however, and so he wasn't about to judge her negatively because he didn't know what stereotypes to apply. "I wouldn't have minded even if you were," he said brightly and (somewhat) honestly to her comment about the Fire elementals. "You don't seem the bad sort." It was true that he'd give even some Fire kids a chance before he judged them, but he was learning the hard way that things didn't always work out. Harley and Josh had been decent during the war but Asha? She'd toyed with him and then left. Some were good, some were bad. "You get bad seeds in every element, but good ones, too," he said, speaking his mind with a half-smile. His expression was thoughtful, hinting that there might be more to his words than he'd let on.
Shaking his head, Ashton laughed. "Older kids can be strange sometimes." It was nothing but the truth. Then again, he supposed that he couldn't really talk. When he was in ninth grade he had probably thought the same thing about eleventh graders and when he was in college he probably wouldn't think that he was any stranger than the rest of them. It was all a matter of experience and perception. Though he didn't mind the quiet as they walked, it was getting rather awkward and so it was a bit of relief when his attempt to break it was well-recieved. He didn't do well with really long silences. He was an outgoing and cheerful person and he always felt like he was being rude if he just stopped conversing with a companion of his. "Eleventh," he responded when she inquired about his grade. "You'd think that school would be a little more fun after three years," he joked, grinning.
The fact that they didn't know much about one another was a glaringly obvious thing about this encounter, and so Ashton decided to keep up a more constant chatter so that they didn't fall into any more of their awkward silences. Getting to know new people could be hard sometimes as you adjusted to their individual quirks and qualities. "What's it like, being in Wind?" he asked. "A lot of people make assumptions about your element because everyone in it is so different but it'd be nice to hear the opinion of someone that actually shares a dormitory with them all." He chuckled at the thought, green eyes bright. He didn't know if he'd fare well in the Wind dormitory. He'd heard that a lot of them didn't get along with one another and supposed it made sense--if someone had the nice qualities of an Earth but another had the temperament of a Fire, it probably would get difficult.
