Nell sat crosslegged on the floor, dipping her wand into the bottle of bubbles and taking it out to blow them above Pablo. The cat—steadily growing so he was not longer a klutzy ball of fluff and now a relatively agile monster—jumped up to bat at the orbs floating around him, flinching when they popped on his nose. Just returning home from eating lunch with a friend, she went back to the apartment to figure out what she wanted to do with the rest of her day. It wasn’t like she was going to sit around and watch television like some people did on their vacation. She couldn’t sit still long enough to be able to handle days filled with channel and internet surfing. Hanging out with friends and doing something fun was how she spent her summers. But before calling her other friends to see what they were up to, she decided she should spend some time playing with Pablo. Being pretty active, she worried that the kitty might feel neglected without constant affection from his master.
Her fun was interrupted, however, when her phone rang on the coffee table. Reaching over, she almost dropped it before taking hold and answering it. ”Hey,” she said, inwardly groaning when she heard the voice that replied. Her father. She really should check the caller ID at all times. ”Jane called me yesterday.” And this conversation was off to an auspicious start. Bringing up her aunt was a good mood killer for her. ”She said she wants your new number. But I decided to ask your permission this time.” She rolled her eyes. Well wasn’t he just the paragon of good fathering. ”You should already know the answer to that, and it’s no way in hell am I giving that woman my number.” There was a short pause, and she kept her hand on the bottle of bubbles so Pablo didn’t knock it over as he played with the wand in it. ”I think it would be in your best interests,” he continued, and Nell was tempted to grab a pillow so she could scream into it. ”She is going to be visiting soon.”
”What?” Nell asked instantly. ”No, no, no, no. And I reiterate for emphasis, no.” She heard the man sigh, and imagined him pinching the bridge of his nose in frustration. Well screw him. ”She’s going to whether you want her or not, Nell.” Now the girl stood up and walked into the kitchen to place her bubbles on the counter so she could pace while yelling at her father. ”Why does she even want to come up here?” But she already knew. She just wanted to harrass her niece and make her come back to America sooner so she had the satisfaction of seeing her thrown in jail without help from the lawyer her father was supposed to be hiring. But she wondered what the woman told León. ”You keep saying you want to talk about this trial, and yet you manage to avoid talking to me,” he said, the sarcasm clear in his voice. She gripped the phone harder. ”It will be easier to discuss things with her involved.” Nell was trying her best not to get too angry, she really was. ”Jane is testifying against me, papa, I don’t want her involved.” He was a difficult man, though, so of course he had to argue. ”The fact that she is giving testimony is a good reason to have her involved in anything we’re planniong.”
Was he retarded or did he just enjoy doing this. ”I’ll come over later, just…just don’t give her my number.” By doing this, she was just proving her father’s point, but she didn’t care by then, she hung up and put the phone on the counter, yanking up the fridge door to look for something to eat. On the shelf of the door, she had one of her favorite, strange snacks of capers, and got out a shrimp fork to fit into the tiny bottle. She knew that she shouldn’t eat when distressed or anything because it’d just make her sick, but she didn’t know what else to do with all the frustration she had except eat food. Nell managed to calm down quickly, however—it was a task to keep her angry for long periods of time, especially when food was around. And especially when Pablo came into the kitchen to rub against her legs, clearly asking to be fed even though it wasn’t dinnertime. She grabbed her phone from the counter and walked out, flopping onto the couch so she could watch TV while texting her friends.

Ace sighed walking down the hall way to the building complex. It was a very, different kind of place. He'd been there before of course. But he was too busy trying to find his way out than looking around. Honestly, the place wasn't the greatest place to live in. It looked dirty and there was a weird smell coming from the air. But he really had no choice but to come here. All his other friends had left for the month, and he had nobody to stay with. Sure he had parent's that he could have gone too. But they were back in America, and plane tickets were not cheap at all. Sure he could have driven or taken a bus, but that would have taken too long and wasn't worth it. He had usually only one trip back home and that was during Christmas. That was the yearly, trip back home for him, instead of the summer. Nell was the only person he knew who he could ask. He was going to ask to stay for the month.
He had brought up his bags, and those were only two big duffel bags filled with clothes, and maybe a few personal items. Sure he didn't have to bring them up, but since he only had a bike and no way to secure the bags to make sure they didn't get stolen, he had too. He didn't want to seem like he knew she was going to accept him, but he didn't want his clothes stolen, so it was really the only option he had. His helmet was inside one of the bags and his jacket was also shoved into his bag. Crap what was her door number again? He thought. He had a clue that it was the right door, the one he was standing in front of. He dropped his bags on the floor and knocked on the door. Please let me be right, let this be Nell's door! he prayed silently kinda nervous. He really did hope that this was her door, or else this would be pretty embarrassing.
The reason he was in this situation in the first place was because of the School. They totally closed everything down when summer break came in. They kicked everybody out, well not literally, they did it politely of course. It was still pretty bad, most of the kids who had really no where else to go had to crash with friends. They couldn't stay at the dorms, and that really annoyed Ace. He complained about it every single time sense he was a sophomore. Three times, but still it was better to complain and maybe get something done with it, instead of not doing anything and nothing getting fixed. He didn't want his parent's to pay for the ticket, he'd only ask if it was for something important. Sure visiting family was important but, he saw them at Christmas, so it wasn't like he was never visiting them. If something bad happened though, like his sister was having a baby, or something else, he'd fly over there, getting the money from his parent's or his sister. He'd only go that low when he thought it was vital enough that he needed to sacrifice pride, for family.
So that's how he had ended up in front of the door that he hoped was Nell's. If he remembered correctly she only had one bed, well, one futon and one couch. He'd probably be crashing on the couch, and since it was only one room, well that might be awkward at first. He hoped he doesn't snore. He knocked once more, and really prayed that this was his friends place. He didn't want to suffer the embarrassment that would come if it wasn't. He shuffled his feet and looked down at the ground before deciding to call out to the other side of the door."Hey it's Ace."

Nell was in the middle of a text conversation with her friend about the importance of pickled items in today’s society when she heard a knock on the door. Finishing typing out her text she put her phone down on the table and another knock sounded. Then, she heard Ace’s voice, and called, ”I’m coming!” She maneuvered through the small space and unlocked the deadbolt on the door and pulled it open, keeping a curious Pablo at bay with her foot. She didn’t want him to get out and run around, especially not when she lived downtown—it was a place even dangerous for cats. ”What’s up, Ace?” she asked, the jar of capers in one hand. It was one of the foods that when she started eating, she could not stop until the entire thing was gone. She knew it made her breath stink, though, so she covered her mouth and apologized. ”My breath is kind of skanky, sorry.” It was the price she had to pay for enjoying certain kinds of foods.
By now she was wondering if there was any specific reason he’d come over. Usually, her friends didn’t like to hang out in her sleazy apartment and offered that she come to their place. She didn’t argue that. When Nell looked down, however, she noticed some bags at his feet. ”What’s with the duffel bags, amigo?” she asked with a large grin. Earlier, she’d been pissed at her father, so it was amazing now that she could be in such a good mood. Time and friends did that for her, she guessed. It was a near impossible task to keep her mad for extended periods of time. Pushing off from leaning against the door, she said, ”You can come in, if you want.” Surely he would like to, since he seemed he carried those bags all the up. She again wondered what they were for. The first thing that came to mind certainly wasn’t that he planned to move in with her. Maybe he just got back from somewhere or he wanted to show her something. Her thoughts never once leaned toward the idea of having a roommate, because she was pretty sure no one would want to live with her. Not that she was a horrible roommate, but she lived in a crappy place. Even though her apartment was better than most in the fact that she now had some nice things and it was very clean thanks to Josh’s tips and tricks, people still wouldn’t think of hers as an ideal apartment to crash unless it was for a night.
Walking back into the apartment as Pablo sniffed at Ace, she asked, ”You want anything to drink?” She was pretty good at this hostess thing, even though the last time Ace was over he was the one cooking for her. She hadn’t forgotten about the glorious sandwhich he’d made. Just how she hadn’t forgotten about the fact that they’d seen each other naked. What a wonderful day that was—she looked back with a particular fondness. Shaking off her disturbed thoughts, she called from the kitchen, ”I just ate lunch, but I can make you something.” She was an okay cook, and she knew that her father wanted to make her better by giving her lessons on Spanish cuisine, but she wasn’t ready to accept help from him. Instead, she made due with her memory of watching him cook and her love for food. Nell put the capers back in her fridge and pulled a pack of gum from her pocket so that Acce wouldn’t have to deal with caper breath.

Ace rubbed the back of his neck, his nervous tick starting up again. Was this her place? Was she even home? Maybe he should just go back and try to go crash somewhere else. He really didn't want to intrude but this was really his only option. Just as he started to turn around and settle on the decision to go back down and try to find somewhere else to sleep he heard a muffled voice from the other side call out. He stopped and turned back to face the door. Should he really burden Nell with his presence. The last time he was here, well they saw each other naked, and then Ace went off and had a panic attack right in front of her. So far his history in this house wasn't one filled with good luck. He heard the lock twist open and then the door opening up. He let out a breath of relief now without a doubt sure that this was Nell's apartment. "Oh nothing much really. Now what should he say. He hadn't really planned ahead of this. He was just worried about getting the right door. Now how should he ask to stay over. " Don't worry about it, can't smell a thing. He said with a smile of his. Nope Ace couldn't really smell Nell's breath, sure he had above average smelling abilities but, the smell outside was a bit stronger than her breath.
Ace shrugged at her question like it was nothing to carry around some duffel bags. " They're just holding some of my stuff." He said discreetly. He shouldn't really burden her with the whole truth and say that it was his clothes for the rest of the month. He would tell her, if she let him stay over, now how should he ask that? Nell could I be your roomie for the month? Or was that too direct? Maybe he should try and be subtle, give her clues before asking her, that way she might not have been shocked about him asking to stay over. Ace thanked her and followed her into the apartment. He looked around, well it was definitely cleaner than it was last time. There was a significant decrease in the amount of boxes. And it smelled so much better in here than out there in the hallway. Or maybe that was just him. But either way it was pretty clean. Ace dropped his duffel bags on the floor in front of the couch and then sat down himself.
Ace pet Pablo and scratched him behind the ear. He never had a cat but he was pretty sure that most pets liked to be scratched behind the ear. Ace glanced up and shook his head. "Nah I'm fine." He replied. He had lunch at burger king before he got here, so he was fine for the moment. Then with remembering about food, he thought that maybe he could convince her to let him be her roomie if he would cook for her. He was a really good cook for someone his age, mostly because when he was a kid he had to cook for his family. He did it because his dad said he needed practice, and he could experiment on different flavors with them. He didn't mind, Ace really liked to cook. Maybe he could get a part time job at a restaurant to see how things worked and maybe even learn a few things. Ace shook his head again, "It's alright Nell I had lunch before I came over." He replied. Then he took a breath, alright time to ask the question.
"Nell do you remember the last time I was here?" How could they forget, it was probably something embedded into his memory and he would never forget, "Well do you remember the conversation about having a room mate?" He asked, he sort of remembered it, he remembered it was after seeing each other in their birthday suits. "Well I was wondering if, you'd like one?" He said then he stopped and looked around. Maybe that wasn't direct enough, "What I'm trying to say is, can I crash here till school starts up again?"

Nell had to wodner why he was bringing up these bags but she didn’t question it further. Ace did some weird things, she wasn’t going to ask about this particular thing. Everyone was allowed to have their quirks, and she wasn’t going to bug him about why he was carrying around duffel bags. Instead, she listened to him as he said that he’d already eaten. ”You sure?” she said, ignorantly basing other people’s responses off how she would usually respond when it came to food. Even if she was hungry, she would politely decline anything given to her like Ace had. Usually they insisted, though. It reminded her of the Japanese tradition she had read about, that when someone comes over with a gift, you must always decline it first, and then accept it upon the second request. Maybe that’s how Ace worked. ”It’s not any trouble,” she continued, looking in the fridge which was actually pretty empty. That was usually thanks to her appetite. ”And I could always order out, anyway.” She certainly had enough money. Which is why she was hoping to move out of this shithole soon. Already she had a new job, now she needed a new place. As of right now, however, she didn’t have enough saved up—no way was she riding the tide of her father’s money to the good life. She did not want that whatsoever.
Walking back out out to the main room, she looked over at Ace with imploring brown eyes. ”Yeah, sure,” she said, because she definitely did. The whole Ace getting hammered, seeing each other naked, and him having a breakdown deal was not easily forgotten. Scrunching up her nose, Nell thought. ”I think I do…” She remembered him asking to be roomies, and her saying that he really wouldn’t want to live with her. ”Now I do,” she confirmed, bobbing her head. ”I told you that you would have to deal with my cat. And you said that it was a good thing because I wouldn’t be able to help throwing myself at you.” She laughed as she said this, putting her hands in her pockets. She wasn’t sure if Ace knew, but she had a boyfriend and so none of that would be happening. Not that it would have happened before—she didn’t have those kinds of feelings for him. Ace’s words, however, seemed to be a lead up to the fact that he wanted to stay with her. She blinked. ”You don’t have a place to stay?” she asked curiously, now realizing what the bags he brought were for.
”Are you sure?” she asked skeptically. It was a studio apartment, with limited space and only a couch for someone to crash on. He had slept on her futon when he got hammered on her birthday, but those were special circumstances—she hadn’t slept that night (she’d actually passed out after the whole ordeal of Ace’s breakdown) and that had been for one night. He was asking to stay for a month. She wasn’t worried about having to live with him or anything. She was worried about how he felt needing to stay here. ”I have no problem with it.” Maybe she should have for the fact that she was going out with Josh and she shouldn’t be letting guys move in with her. But this was Ace, he was like family, proven by the fact that they’d only been flustered and embarrassed when they’d seen each other naked and they’d later joked about it. ”I’m just wondering if you’d be able to deal, living here.” It wasn’t the nicest apartment, or in the nicest area, and it certainly wasn’t your first thought when you wanted to move in with someone. ”Hopefully I’m a pretty good roommate. I’m not high maitenence or anything and I’m not going to make you pay any rent since I know you don’t have a job.” She shrugged. Nell really didn’t mind living with Ace—as a matter of fact, she’d love to help him out. And she certainly wasn’t about to kick him out on his ass.

Ace shook his head when she asked again, "Yea I had a Whopper before I came over." He replied. He really liked Burger king, a little more than MickyDee's. He preferred the burgers there, but when it came to fries, well MD had it in the bag, unless they were competing with Five Guys. If they were well Five Guys beat both of those restaurants hands down. Ace liked to think himself a connoisseur of fast foods, and he thought he was pretty good at it. His friends seemed to agree with him, though he wasn't sure if they were doing that just to shut him up. Either way it was good useless knowledge to have if you were wondering where to stop for food on a road trip. He shook his head again when she asked again, he was definitely sure he didn't want any more food. He didn't want to become a hassle just yet. And he would cook for her if she would let him stay over. He was a good cook, and it was sure to pay for him since he had no job and couldn't pay any rent.
Ace gave her a laugh, yea she did remember that day, pretty well too, he forgot about his bragging. Then again he was still recovering from a hangover so it wasn't really his fault, it was the hangovers. That was why he forgot most of that day. Then when she asked him about his living situation he looked away and rubbed the back of his neck. His nervous little tick starting up again. He was a bit ashamed of not being able to get a place to stay, but what could he do, he had no job, no way to pay for a living place, nothing, what so ever. Then he gave her a pitiful little look that totally shouted, 'I am homeless, can you help me out please'. He was desperate, he had nowhere else to go, and he hadn't really gotten any jobs for his little courier business yet. Of course he still had to put up the ads for it, which he hadn't printed yet.
"I really would love living here." He said nodding eagerly, "It's better than last year that's for sure." He said with a nod, Last year, well last year he lived in his car, for a month, taking showers in a water park the next town over, did odd jobs for money for food. He was practically a beggar at the time, he hated it, but he had to do it to live. He wasn't going to his parent's for help. He liked to think of himself as independent from them and would do everything himself. Though he was really glad his sister had visited that year and gave him some money to keep him from having to resort from begging. He paid that off the next time he had gotten a part time job. He really couldn't keep a job, and he really didn't know why.He really didn't want to end up like a bum. "Are you sure?" It was his turn to ask that question, "I mean I know your dating Josh and there's really on one room, and um." He averted his eyes from her and away from the futon. "You guys probably need some 'alone' time." He said air quoting alone so that she got what he meant. He really didn't want to intrude on those two, that was awkward enough, but imagine walking in on them. Oh God he couldn't even imagine it, It would be horrible! (For him anyways.) Ace made the mistake of imagining the situation, and since he had already seen Nell naked, and well Ace turned very red from the image, and he shook his head trying to get the image out of there, repeating an old nursery rhyme. He covered his face with his hands until he was sure the redness and the heat left his face.
"Nell it's better than what I had last year." He said taking a breath. "So I can stay here for the month?" He asked hopefully, he would love Nell if she let him stay. "I'll cook for you since I can't really help pay for rent." He said with an apologetic look.

Nell scoffed. ”A whopper!” Then she reminded herself that Ace was a normal person who consumed normal amounts of food and that was probably filling for him. ”Okay, okay, I’ll lay off,”
[/b] she relented, rolling her eyes at how overbearing she could be. She was a mother hen when she wanted to be, and she wasn’t about to stop fretting over even the smallest of things. Which helped in the worry she felt for Ace and how he was doing. Obviously, he didn’t have any other place to crash, and she wondered about his home life, even though she didn’t ask. Her own personal life was a touchy subject, so she wasn’t about to ask about Ace’s own. It may not have been a big deal, but she still didn’t want to pry. However, when he brought up something happening last year, she felt it was something okay to ask about. Because if it was a touchy subject, he wouldn’t have mentioned it. ”What happened last year?” She knew that for herself, she wasn’t even going to the Academy. Last year, she was still with her mother, too afraid to do anything and take her freedom. And she guessed there was good reason for her to have been afraid with how things turned out. But she didn’t let her mind wander too far, when she said, ”Well, as long as you’re cool with the living conditions.” That was all she was really concerned about. She didn’t want him living somewhere he didn’t want to stay, and she’d make arrangements to see to it that he got somewhere he wanted to be. Ace brought up Josh and a smile sprung to her lips. ”So you’ve heard,” she said, not really surprised. Luckily, the topic of her and Josh’s intimacy—or lack thereof—didn’t bother her as much as it seemed to bother Ace as he looked away from her futon. Nell could only imagine what must have been going on his head. She chuckled as she watched his face light up with heat, and scratched the back of her head. ”You won’t have to worry about that,” she said to reassure him about any awkward moments like that. ”We’re not at that…level. Or base. Or whatever.” She made hand gestures to emphasize her words and clarify that she and Josh were not sleeping together. ”So uh…” She grinned. ”You won’t be interrupting anything.” She still didn’t know how Josh would feel about this arrangement, but she did know that he let her live her life how she wanted. Which she appreciated a lot, actually—one of the worse things you could try to do was take her independence away. In any case, she guessed the lack of sexual relations may have come as a surprise to Ace, , with her boyfriend’s reputation. But that was definitely not going on, and he had nothing to worry about. ”Speaking of alone time, there’s thin walls. And my neighbors really love each other.” She lifted her eyebrows. ”Really love each other.” If Ace planned to move in, he was going to get a very personal look into her neighbors’ love life. Ace once again asked for allowance to stay. ”I’m game,” she said with an easy shrug of her shoulders. ”I’m guessing you have all your stuff? So in that case…mi casa es tu casa.” It was not a big deal at all, actually. Well, maybe it would be if her father stopped by like he sometimes did when she tried to avoid him. But the man had no involvement in her life so his opinion didn’t even matter. If he had an issue with her roommate being a dude, than that was his own damn problem. Again, she had to steer her thoughts clear of the inevitable trainwreck that usually involved her father. ”My own personal chef,” she said, her smile lighting up her eyes. ”That sounds very nice, actually.” Nell was a decent cook, but she wasn’t the best thanks to her lack of experience. But there was a certain thing brought to mind since Ace offered it… ”Just remember that the oven is always hotter than what you preheat it to.” She didn’t even understand how that could happen to a kitchen appliance, but there was a lot of things broken in here. ”As a matter of fact, I should give you a tour of all the things to keep an eye out for while living here.” It sounded a little more suspicious than it actually was.[/size] [/justify] [/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote]

Ace gave her a sigh "Fine fine, I really had two Whoppers and some fries. But I didn't want to spend all my money on fast food." He said admitting to his feast. If Ace and Nell ended up having an eating contest, Nell would win, but Ace might come in to a close second. He used to eat a lot of food, and somehow, (to the jealousy of his sister) he never gained a pound. Maybe it was because of boxing or just being a kid with fast metabolism, but Ace never gained any weight as a kid. Ace gave her a smile when she said she'd lay off. "I'll probably go and cook something later, I can make some burgers for dinner." He said with a shrug. what would he make with the burgers? He'd definitely cook the bacon in the pan first, so that the meat would soak up the flavor. He'd have to buy some blue cheese if Nell didn't have any and some tomatoes and lettuce too. He'd probably top it off with onions, tomatoes, lettuce, and maybe some pickles. He'd also need Mayo, Ketchup, and mustard too. And If she really wanted he could go buy A1 sauce for the burgers too. Her next question snapped him out of his cook's trance. Last year, well he spent it in a car for a month. "I lived in my old beat up car. But since I sold it, I can't really live on my motorcycle." He said rubbing the back of his neck. "Don't worry I'm totally fine with this." Ace replied nodding his head.
Ace nodded, "Yea he told me." It had happened in that one day at the clock tower, that was a weird day. It was easily just a conversation about puzzles, until he asked about Nell. When he did, well Josh got very, protective, and a bit suspicious. The guy was wary that Ace might swoop Nell off her feet. Ace could understand if it was someone other than Nell. But to him, Nell was nothing more than someone really close to him. Nothing romantic between the two. He gave her a smile, "You got yourself a good guy." Ace gave her an approving smile before he sighed in relief. Good he didn't really want to walk in on their, intimacy for lack of a better word. Then giving her a mischievous grin, "Oh? And what base are you two on?" He said curious. And then his mischievousness got the better of him, "So Nellyell," His hand propping up his head, "just remember, I was the first naked guy in your life." He said with a smirk. His mind was working on different ways to tease her at the moment.
Ace gave her a surprised look. "Really?" Then he recovered and he gave her his goofy grin, "Well we'll just have to pretend to be louder." He gave a chuckle. He remembered watching a movie where that happened. And he totally wanted to try it out. That would be amazing fun wouldn't it?
Ace just stood up and hugged her. "Thanks Nell." He said with a squeeze. When Ace let go he gave her a smile, "Yep and I'm free so you don't have to pay me anything." He said with a grin. Ace raised an eyebrow at her comment about the oven. He wasn't going to be baking anything, but that was good to know for tater-tot casserole and shepherds pie. Ace gave an Ooo. "Well I already know I should keep an eye on this guy." Ace said looking at Pablo. "And I know to watch out for you because you have a boyfriend, but you might not be able to resist my masculine charms." He said grinning. " So what else should I watch out for?"

Two whoppers, now that sounded more like it. Nell usually got doubles when eating, because she knew one wouldn’t be enough. And sometimes she even went overboard. ”Plus, fast food is unhealthy,” she said, revealing her inner health nut. She wasn’t the kind of hippie who only ate salads and looked down on anyone who did otherwise. Josh had a rather admirable sweet tooth, but he stayed healthy and so she couldn’t scold him for that. ”Don’t eat it too much, or I might have to do something about it.” She lifted her eyebrows as if challenging him. She was serious in the fact that she liked to make sure everyone around her was healthy. It was a big concern of hers, though she didn’t realize if a lot of people noticed it. But she was the first to make chicken noodle soup for sick friends and she liked to make sure everyone was doing what they were supposed to be, getting vaccines and eating healthy… ”You are freaking amazing,” she said when he told her he’d make dinner. She really had nothing planned and she knew that her father wouldn’t call her up for dinner like he sometimes did since they just fought, so it would be great to have a cook. ”Our first dinner as roommates,” she commented. ”What do you plan to make?” She’d be happy with anything—she was definitely not a picky eater, and she could consume insane amounts of food. Hopefully Ace kept this in mind. She didn’t do tiny portions. Nell was shocked to hear that Ace had been left to living in his car for a month. ”Jeez, you were like a squatter. That must have been pretty uncomfortable.” She was wondering if her next question would be too personal or anything, but he did tell her some very personal things before about himself, so this didn’t seem too bad. ”Are your parents around?” Probably not, but the question could be taken in different ways, asking whether they were alive or whether they just lived somewhere else.
”Are you friends with him?” she asked curiously. She knew Josh didn’t have too many friends, and since Ace was a Water student, it’d be especially surprising to know if they actually did get along. But she’d be glad for it, too. Her boyfriend and best guy friend being friends would be very nice. She tilted her head a bit when Ace voiced his approval, and she gave him a small smirk. ”I know.” It was a bit surprising to hear since a lot of people did not approve their relationship. Not that she cared about those people. She knew that Josh was good for her because he was the best thing that ever happened to her. Even if Ace had disapproved of her and Josh being together, she still wouldn’t change her mind. It wasn’t like he was a father giving his blessing. Even her father’s opinion didn’t matter—actually, his mattered least of all. Nell didn’t know how to approach the question of bases. She had always been a personal girl and she never really talked about certain things. But this was Ace, and she trusted him. ”First, I guess? We're taking it slow,” she added, for which she was thankful and actually surprised. Not that she doubted Josh’s intentions, really, just because of his history. ”I don’t really get the whole base thing outside of baseball.” She rolled her eyes. A lot of the times, lingo went over Nell’s head, but she had been doing some research lately. Then he brought up the ‘incident’ and she eyed him warily. ”You didn’t tell Josh about that, did you?” She knew what Ace could be like sometimes, and even though she did trust him, he was still a joker. But then she laughed, and said, ”Ashame you stole my eye virginity. That’s a form of rape, ya know.”
On the subject of her neighbors and their sex life, she laughed. ”Hope you’re a screamer.” She’d fully support an idea like that. It would be harmless fun, and she sure her neighbors wouldn’t mind. They were on friendly terms, and Nell helped them out sometimes, so it wouldn’t be vindictive or anything. Nell hugged him back, before letting him go with a smile. This is why she did it—knowing that she really helped a friend out made it all worthwhile. ”No problem,” she said truthfully. Nell followed Ace’s gaze to Pablo and shook her head. It had been the cat’s fault that Nell’s eyes had been raped, but who could stay mad at a face like that? And as for falling for Ace… ”I’ll try my best,” she said dryly. ”If you stay clothed, I won’t feel the need to jump your bones.” She laughed after saying this, thinking of some real things he needed to look out for. ”There’s a soft spot next to the TV,” she said, nodding her head over to it. ”Try not to walk on it, because it’s probably going to collapse soon and I don’t want you to do some Loony Toons routine.” There was nothing she could do about that, but she would like to figure something out. ”Sometimes the light short circuits, and if you touch the plug when it does, you’ll get shocks. So just leave it.” Again, it wasn’t her fault and there wasn’t anything she could really do, short of calling an electrician. ”And when you are cooking, the smoke alarm will most likely go off.” Another thing she really couldn’t do anything about, and that really sucked, but she could deal. Nell had lived in worse conditions. She wondered if Ace could,as well. ”Still want to live here?”

Ace gave her a nod "Yep but it tastes good." Ace said with a grin. Yea fast food was tasty, but it really was bad for one's health. It was pretty bad, once he had too much junk food and he felt like crap an hour or so later. Ace liked to try and be healthy, but sometimes he just got lazy and decided to sleep more instead of go for a jog. Yea he didn't exercise as much as he should, but when he did he made up for the missed sessions by doubling the work. "How much is too much?" He asked curious just so he knew to cut off before he reached too much. Though his version of too much might be different from her version of too much. He gave her a bragging grin. "Yea I've been told that a lot." He said. He's been told that a few times that's for sure. He shrugged when she asked what he might have made. He didn't really know, it was something he didn't decide really until it was time to eat. "Uhm." He mumbled not really sure, " Maybe burgers, if we have some ground beef." He said blinking, his chef's mind turning it's gears. How would he make it? Well he wanted to experiment of course, he thought about maybe making the patties with cheese mixed with the meat, and with a few spices of course. Add some steak sauce as they cooked and then add some veggies to the toppings. He shrugged at the squatter comment, "You get used to it." He said that truthfully.. Sure at first it seemed pretty bad, pretty uncomfortable, but eventually you settled into the routine of living in a car. You did what you had to, you showered where you could. It was something that like everything else, you got used too. "My parents?" He repeated unsure of how to answer it Maybe he should tease her a little, "I don't have any, I was an orphan who had to steal to survive. The winters I had to use a can fire to stay warm, and I got my name because it was my favorite card out of a deck." He said trying his best to look solemn and sad at the memory. When he thought she bought the story he gave her a laugh "Nah I'm just kidding, my parent's are in America." He nodded "Were near the Pacific right?" He took a moment to think about the distance. "Well my parents are near the Atlantic in Pa." He said mentioning the state they lived in. It was really far away, taking a bus, or driving there was too long. The only thing he could do to get there quickly is to fly, and again, plane tickets are expensive.
Ace thought for a moment on the friendship of him and Josh. "To be honest, were more, allies or acquaintances, not really best buds." He said scratching the back of his head. Yea him and Josh weren't the best of buds, but they weren't enemies either. They were allies over the general protection of Nell Doe Sheppard. He gave her a grin and ruffled her hair like big brothers do. He never really thought of Nell as friends, he had somehow always felt they were more like family than just friends. And since she was family it was only his duty as a brother to tease her about her new boyfriend. His mischievous smirk came out and then in a sing song voice he cried out "Nell and Josh sitting in a tree! K-I-S-S-I-N-G! First comes love then comes marriage then comes a baby in a baby carriage!" He had always wanted to do that but if he had tried that with his sister, well, bad things would have happened. IT was the most juvenile thing he could think of about teasing her about her new boyfriend. "But Wait That's not all! In a Hall! They play naked volleyball!" He acted like a kid and laughed. It was fun to be kid every once in a while, kids always had the best fun. When Ace was finally done laughing he sat back down and blinked. "Only first base?!" He said interested. After some asking around he had learned Josh was a bit of a player, sorta like Ace, but Josh was all for the one night stands. Of course these were all rumors and he really had no idea what was true and what was just gossip. But still he would have thought they would be at least at second base. Then he counted to make sure he remembered what bases meant what. "Oh wait that's good, stay at first until your married." He said nodding like a father to his daughter. He laughed when she had asked if he had told Josh. " And risk getting my face beaten in?!" He said in between laughs. "The guy was already suspicious I might swoop you off your feet and take you away from him." He said calming down. It was sorta true, he sounded a bit over protective about the prospects of another guy who was more than friends in Nell's life. Though that seemed understandable. "Whoa whoa. I was only returning the favor, Though you didn't take my eye virginity it was still somewhat unwanted." He said somewhat because part of his mind, maybe his drunk mind, wanted to go out with Nell. Though that part of his mind was drunk off of her signature drink.
Ace gave a bit of a whine "Oh but it's the girls job to be the screamer." He said with a heavy sigh. Of course he didn't mind what ever he got. The idea was just to have some harmless fun. He wondered what these neighbors were actually like. Maybe he'd find out in the course of this month. Ace gave her a grin, "That's unfortunate, for some reason sometimes I get this weird sensation where I just have to take off all of my clothes." That wasn't true he just wanted to joke around with Nell. Then it seemed she was thinking of actual things he would need to watch out for. A soft spot by the TV that might break and make you fall through the hole, the light short circuits and will shock you, and if he cooked anything the smoke alarm would go off. Then she asked once more as if it was his final decision. He gave her a smile, this was better than a car "It's paradise." He said jokingly, but it was his answer too. He would live here, for a month and get used to everything before heading back to the Dorms. Then he thought about the problem with the smoke alarm. "Why don't you just take the batteries out?" He asked. That was his solution back when he was still practicing cooking. That's what he'd do because he would eventually burn something and the smoke would cause the alarm to go off.
((don't match this!))

Ace’s question made her think a bit. ”You can have three meals a week that are fast food,” she decided, thinking that was all right. It was okay to go a little over sometimes, since it wouldn’t hurt that bad. But health was serious business to her, and that meant limiting of bad food. ”I always have ground beef. And meat.” Then she remembered her empty fridge. ”Actually, maybe I have to run out to the store to pick up some stuff.” She definitely needed restocking, and even though she needed a lot off food to last her, she chose not to really use her father’s money for it. Because that would be like relying on him for something, and she didn’t want that. But it seemed like Ace didn’t have anyone to rely on if he was living in his car. It was kind of a sad thought actually.Nell blinked when he started talking about being an orphan street kid, and laughed when he talked about naming himself after the card. She tilted her head, and then nodded when Ace told the real story. ”I’m from right next door,” she said, finding it funny that they were both American. ” South Bronx, New York. Though it’s probably pretty different than Pennsylvania.” She’d heard that Pennsylvania had a lot of farmland, in which case it was very different from New York City. She’d never told Ace about that personal detail, but it was like quid pro quo. Besides, they could somewhat relate with that. What she didn’t mention was the fact she had family back there, too. He didn’t need to know about those people.
Apparently the two weren’t besties or anything, but she guessed allies was still enough. At least they got along. She ducked her head to try and get away from Ace’s hand, and patted it back down after he messed it up. Rolling her eyes when he sung the nursery rhyme, she tickled his stomach with a grin. She’d actually never had sung the rhyme before—she’d never had a childhood to do it. ”You need a girlfriend so I can annoy you,” she said, because she certainly would enjoy teasing him about a girly. Besides, she wanted him to find a person that made him happy like Josh made her happy. ”I don’t think you can preach that to me,” she teased about his hypocriticalness. She knew Ace ewas just being a big brother who probably didn’t want to think about her having a sex life. But she had no reason to wait till marriage, and she knew that Josh didn’t have those morals either. Then again, she wasn’t thinking too hard about her future. She had dreams, but there was the roadblock of the trial preventing her from looking forward to anything. ”Well despite your obvious charms, Josh has nothing to worry about,” she said with a small sigh. It wsn’t like Josh hadn’t told her his dirty little secrets, she just knew the way Ace would have said it would have made it worse. She didn’t want Josh to be jealous, though, especially of Ace. Nell wouldn’t deceive herself into thinking everyone could get along, especially when it involved Josh, but she still could wish. ”Whatever. I just forgave you because of the hangover and your cooking.” It was only a half-truth—Nell forgave easily enough.
Nell winked at him and spoke innocently. ”Sorry, but I don’t think you can make me scream.” A virgin she may have been, but she was certainly not a prude. Especially not when it came to joking around with friends. ”Really? That’s funny, because sometimes I get this weird urge to shoot naked guys in my apartment with Nerf guns.” It was a light-hearted threat, but she definitely did not need a naked Ace running around and she did have a Nerf gun. Talk about her apartment was a bit more serious, since this was where he’d be crashing for the month. Nell had once believed that she couldn’t subject anyone to living with her, and yet here she was with Ace. Paradise? ”Yes, I like to serve tropical drinks with umbrellas and fan you with leaves.” Then, a more serious thought crossed her mind. ”It is the summer, so to make up for the lack of central air I have a fan.” She gestured to the standing fan that was only on the first level it had, since it wasn’t too hot. When she first moved in during wintertime, her goal was to buy a space heater, but that didn’t happen. ”I’m paranoid of an actual fire happening. The microwave gives me problems sometimes…” It was her fault with the tin foil before, and there was the fact she also didn’t really understand the contraption. ”Do you want to come with me to get some stuff for dinner?”

Ace nodded, "Well that's sorta like my," He counted in his head how many meals of his were fast food, " That's probably my sixth one." He said rubbing the back of his neck. He didn't have much choice in terms of food, seeing as school no longer served any food, or living quarters, he couldn't really eat any home cooked meals. So the only thing he could do was eat fast food, or go to cheap restaurants. "Heh, meat." Ace said immaturely, then when she said she had to go pick some stuff up he tilted his head, "Grocery shopping?" He repeated, he should go with her to go and get ingredients for the food. Maybe tomorrow he'd make sheppard's pie, he'd need some potatoes and veggies. "Well a city girl huh?" He said with a grin. Ace lived in a development where most of the houses were close together but there was still a lot of trees and forest around them. He hadn't really lived near the city, so he thought of himself as a country guy. "Well I'm a country kid," Ace said lamely. He hadn't really gone to the Big Apple before, only a few times when he was a kid. That was before he met Ray so some of that was rather fuzzy. He did remember the toy stores there were huge though. That and some of the places smelled pretty bad compared to his fresh mountain air.
Ace laughed when she tickled him and he stopped his teasing "Mercy mercy!" He cried through the laughs. He hadn't had much use for the rhyme, when he had gotten friends they were mostly too old to be teased by the old rhyme. Mostly if he had any female friends, who somehow hadn't ended up his girlfriend or in his bed, he didn't really tease them as none of them really got too close too him. Nell was an acceptation to that rule, she hadn't ended up his girlfriend, nor did she end up in his bed. She was a lot like his sister, maybe that's why he didn't want that kind of relationship with her. Though once or twice he may have wanted to kiss her, not like how he had before not on the forehead, but on the lips. It was a fleeting thing, it was just his hormones speaking for him. There was nothing backing up those feelings, just hormones. "Well that's good," He said nodding about her faithfulness to Josh. "Well thank you my cooking can do amazing wonders." He said waving his hands in the air saying his cooking was magic.
Ace blinked, then he grinned, "Oh that sounded like challenge Miss Shepard, be lucky that you had a boyfriend, or else I'd have to act on that challenge,"He said teasing her. He wouldn't do that to Nell, not that his skills were in question, it was that she was too close to family for him to do that. When she mentioned her Nerf gun his eyes lit up, he went to his on of his duffel bags and pulled out the revolver Nerf gun, previously called the Maverick by the sellers, but dubbed The King, by Ace. Out of nowhere one day he decided to buy a Nerf gun and tinker with it. He bought the coolest one he saw and it was an old blue and silver Nerf Maverick. Looking up mods and ways to paint it online he slowly figured out how to make it better. Now the gun was awesome, painted black and silver, with the word King painted on the right hand side, it was just something he was proud of. The bullet's shot farther than a non modded gun, and it just looked cooler too. "Well looks like we could have a Nerf war then," He said with a grin showing her his gun, his baby. He nodded at the fan, it wasn't too hot but it was summer and it may get hotter. He thought he would warn her that if it got really hot he might just walk around in boxers, but he decided to let that be a surprise. He tilted his head at her comment on the microwave. "Did you happen to put metal in the microwave?" He asked curiously. He had done that once before, it was a fun experiment. He of course got into trouble for setting fire to the microwave, but it was an old one that was already dying on them. Ace nodded, "Sure how far is it?" He thought thinking he might give her a ride on his bike. Though getting back with bags full of groceries might be difficult.

Nell shook her head when he talked about his consumption of fast food. ”Dios mio, what am I going to do with you, Ace?” She dissolved into more ramblings as she ran a hand through her hair, successfully pulling a few strands out of her clip. In her mind, that was a bit too much, but she was also a health freak in her mind. It couldn’t have been completely fine for him to eat that much, but she was ridiculously paranoid when it came to other’s health. At his next comment, she sighed. ”No really, what am I going to do with you?” But then she laughed, of course. She did not at all mind Ace’s immaturity, it was something she liked about him, actually. Then came the topic of where she’d come from, and she nodded. ”From the projects, no less,” she said, shaking her head. She had been raised in the Hispanic part of the ghetto, even though that hadn’t really been part of her life. Her life had been the halls of a house like hell. ”I would much rather be a country girl,” she said with a grin. ”Though that’s just my element talking.” The city certainly wasn’t too good a place for her to develop her powers, and she’d preferred Pennsylvanian farmland to the grimy little parks that were more suited for homeless than for Earth elementals. She didn’t linger on how her life could have been different, because that only made her sad. She’d lived and moved on from those days, that’s all that mattered.
She smiled successfully as he cried out from her tickling. Immaturity was something she liked to indulge in, since she tried to be the mature one most of her life. She’d been taking care of herself for so long she couldn’t remember any sort of childhood—since she never even had one—and now she was on her own even though she wasn’t even an adult. She moved her life forward with maturity, but a lot of the times she wanted to act like the kid she never was. Perhaps that was why both she and Ace had a Nerf gun. He took out his own and her eyes grew comically wide. ”The gods shine upon your weaponry,” she complimented, before her face settled into a cocky grin. ”But I can still kick your butt, anytime, anywhere.” A surprise assault should be expected from her, since immaturity was her indulgence. And she supposed she should have warned him about Pablo’s love for aerial assaults, but she kept that information to herself. The cat was another matter entirely, but the fuzzball was too cute to even hate. ”In any case, I wouldn’t advise you to walk around in your birthday suit, traumatizing my cat.” She said this humorously, since Pablo didn’t need any traumatizing, the little demon.
He asked the question and she looked anywhere but at his face, fussing with her hair again. Admission of obvious stupidity made her anxious, but she sure it was the same for everyone. ”I didn’t know about tin foil and I put it in the microwave and…” She flushed, as if he were attacking her. ”I just wanted Chinese food, okay?” Now she understood how bad of a decision that had been when she replaced the microwave—that she still had trouble with. Dumbly, she finished, ”I don’t like mirowaves.” For that, she could understand Ace and his fast food. She didn’t like to use the microwave and reheat leftovers and when she didn’t want to cook the easiest thing to do was order take out or go to Burger King. The convenience and cheapness was far too tempting. Nell was glad for the change of conversation over to the store, and she said, ”Not too far. We could walk if you want to work off that Micky D’s.” It was a good way for her to get exercise, at least. With all the food she ate, an impressive metabolism wasn’t the only thing she could rely on. Luckily she was energetic all of the time and it was hard for her to keep still.

Ace chuckled "I'm sorry mommy," Ace looked down at his feet, a faux ashamed looked. A look like a kid got caught breaking an expensive vase. What was with expensive vases. Why did they have to be so expensive and just breakable. If you have kid's you really shouldn't put anything breakable in their reach. They were kids and kids broke stuff, it was part of their nature. "I don't know mommy." He said shuffling his feet acting like a little kid. When she said she was from the projects Ace gave a whistle, "Well no wonder your the tough girl you are now," he grinned and lightly punched her in the arm. "Country girls are hot." Ace said grinning, it was a joke, some of them were hot but whatever. "I liked where I lived. It was really, peaceful," Ace commented on his home. It was a really peaceful place that some people could love. It was slow, not like the city where everyone was bustling about. Ace was fine with his slow home, the fresh air was nice and so was the calm and quiet.
Ace gave her a smile as she commented on his weapon. "I'm the only god I need." He said bragging about the beauty in his hand. Ace returned her cocky grin with his own. "We shall see Miss Shepard, we shall see." Ace could take on Nell in a Nerf fight, He was very confident in his Nerf skills, after all, he had a dorm full of water students to practice against. There were a few times where people would end up fighting each other with the toy guns. Many bullets were lost during the endeavor, but it was worth it in the end. He hated having to lose bullets, it was just pesky annoying having to go to the store to buy more. Ace didn't really know why he acted so immaturely sometimes, maybe it was because he hadn't acted like a kid much when he was at that age. That age, around twelve, he was with Ray and they really didn't play with Nerf. Ace laughed, "Ah," He said looking down at the innocent Pablo, "He's the one who made me loose the towel." He said giving a fake glare to the tiny thing.
Ace smirked, "Always put it in a microwave safe bowl or plate," Ace said repeating what his mom told him the time he shoved leftovers wrapped in tin foil into the microwave. Ace laughed at her being flustered, "Don't worry, I don't think the microwave hates you." When he finnished laughing he nodded to her offer of a walk. "Sure we can walk, I don't mind." He said with a nod. Walking would be good for him, he liked to walk it was nice.

At Ace’s childlike ploy, Nell whacked him on the back of the head. ”That’s what I’m going to do with you,” she said playfully. She’d never actually hurt anyone—it was one of her missions to stay as far away from that as possible. But Ace could take any hit she gave, even if there was serious intent behind it, which would never happen. He spoke of her toughness, which she had to snort at. She didn’t think she was very tough. The only thing she had were balls of steel that she could only back up with words—that wasn’t tough, that was pathetic. ”Yeah, I’m totally hood,” she said with a roll of her eyes. She was a five-foot-two white girl, she was about as hood as her PT Cruiser was sexy. Then he talked about country girls, and she jokingly threatened, ”Don’t make me hit you again.” It was true, she’d still very much like to be a country girl, to have grown up in a place like Ace had, but there was still no way to go back and change where she was born. ”Have you been back there recently?” she questioned. Then, she responded, ”I’d like to visit there some time.” When it was safe for her to step back in America, if she’s free after the trial. Don’t think about it.
Instead, she focused her mind on the Nerf gun, snorting when Ace that he was the only god he needed. She wondered if he’d been playing with the guns since he was little, and wondered if wondering about that was a strange thing to wonder. So she stopped wondering, and picked up the cat currently the target of Ace’s mock anger, nuzzling him with her nose as he purrred. ”How can you be mad at the face?” she asked. ”I’m sure he’s very sorry.” Nell would rather forget the entire thing. After all, it hadn’t been Pablo who’d been traumatized, it had been her and her virgin eyes. He gave her advice on the microwave, and she rolled her eyes, still cradling Pablo in her arms. ”Thanks, mommy,” she said, using his own line against him. It wasn’t just that she didn’t like microwaves, it was that they didn’t like her. Nell didn’t even know what it was.
Nell led the way out of the apartment and to the store when Ace voiced his approval. It was a longer walk than she had made it seem, but she hoped he didn’t mind. It was a nice day, after all, even if it was pretty hot. She didn’t like going to the ones closest to her apartment. Even though she didn’t use her father’s money for necessesities, she had enough money that she liked to go to supermarkets where the fruit was not rotting in the bins. She took out a cart and pushed it to Ace, saying, ”Since you’re living with me now, throw in any requests you have. Favorite foods, drinks, whatever.” She was sure some of his favorites would make it into the cart anyway, with the amount of food she needed to buy to last her a week. The cart would most likely end up piled above the limit. She started making her way down the aisles, first getting what she absolutely needed before indulging in anything else.
