It wasn't often that Joshua volunteered in the Medical Wing. He was fine with working at the hospital in the Hollow because it was owned by his father and thus he was getting a little more confident even as he got older and took on more responsibilities as a volunteer. What had once been simply sitting with sick children and trying to cheer them up by telling stories and giving them a laugh had evolved into actually helping out by going into the rooms and asking the patients about their well-being. At the Academy, however, most of his 'volunteering' was in a tutoring sense. He would help out someone on the weekend if they were struggling with their work. It was hardly a regular occurrence, it was just something that the professors sometimes asked and Joshua complied to. Now, though, he was starting to consider asking for a bit of experience. He wanted to train his elemental healing powers, and what better way to do that than to heal?
"Um, excuse me?" Joshua asked tentatively of the receptionist as he strode into the office with a purpose. His stance was confident, but the hesitance was there in his tone. She looked up from something that she was reading and gave him a wide smile. "Oh, hello. Joshua, right?" He supposed she retained his name from his time as a leader. They often popped in to check on the kids in their element when something was amiss. "Are you hurt? We're a little busy today, so if it isn't urgent I'm going to have to suggest that you take a seat." Her tone was kind and apologetic. Normally this would have made him think that perhaps she might be an Earth elemental, but the Medical Wing was one place where you could find kind-hearted people of every element, even his own of Fire. They took this job to help and to heal, after all.
"No, ma'am," he said politely with a soft shake of his head. "I was just wondering if you ever accepted volunteers? See, my father runs the hospital at the Hollow and I'm used to treating minor injuries and I was... kind of hoping I might get the chance to exercise my powers." Joshua smiled a bit sheepishly as he admitted his reasons for being here. She seemed to understand, though, and she smiled at him. "But of course. We'd never deny a college student looking to further their studies." She shuffled the papers on her desk, straightened them, and then stood up. "Come on back here with me, I'll show you where everything is." She also explained to him that a lot of the nicer students offered to help out when there was an overload of injuries. "Usually I'd show you the basics, too, but you think you can handle it, right?"
Josh nodded. "If I'm unsure about something, I know who to ask," he said with a smile. She thanked him and bade him a quick goodbye. "I'll send anyone with minor burns your way," she chirped. Josh nodded and hopped up onto one of the counters, sitting down and pulling his favourite object--the Rubik's Cube--from his bag to occupy his time in between treatments. It was probably a little unofficial to be sitting here and playing with puzzles when he was supposed to be volunteering, but it was alright as long as no one was here, right? He figured that it would be okay. He had officially worked out the trick to solving the Cube, and so it wasn't hard for him to fall into his usual rhythm of steady clicking. Click, click, turn, click. He even had a favourite colour to start with first--red, like his element. Joshua hummed quietly to himself as he worked on the Cube, awaiting the first catalyst for his power.

This sucked. Fourth time that week that she was sent to the medic. Head injury, a fractured bone, bruises, and now this. Would those fire kids ever leave her alone? Sure, she was just a little Water girl, but did they have to single her out? She sighed as she made her way up to the wing, her hand clutched to her chest. It was the same arm that had been hurt before, so the boy must have known about the injury. He was just sick of it though, did they have to go to the point of actually using their powers on her? It's not like she could do much back, she was still having trouble forming a fricken bubble, let alone anything that could do any damage.
She pushed her way through the doors, running straight into the Head Nurse. "Enh heh..Hi."
She held out her arm, showing the burns spreading across the length of it. The nurse simply sighed. "You know the drill. Just go to the back, I have a helper today. Take a seat and he'll be with you." Noly nodded and slowly moved her way back. She didn't see anyone that looked like they were helping out, so she could only wonder who it was. When she got into the other area, she sat in one of the ugly fold up chairs, holding her arm back against her chest. She was still angry, but she was getting over it. She just couldn't help but wonder where Nell had been these last few days. Usually, whenever Noly was in trouble, Nell would come running. It was like her Noly senses were tingling. She always came to the rescue, but hadn't in the last few days. It sure was odd. Noly reached into her pocket with her good hand, pulling out her cell. She blasted a quick text to Nell, letting her know that she was alright, just because she knew that word in the school traveled fast, so Nell would probably know within a matter of minutes anyways. She would get her usual scolding, then a huge hug and promise of lots of booze and crazy dancing when she was better. It was the usual speal, and Noly actually couldn't wait for it. She needed promises of dancing. They had never gone after her head injury like they'd planned, Nell was too worried that the Water girl was going to be too sore to even move around, as well as rot her injured mind with alcohol.[/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote]

Joshua was still clicking away on the Cube when he became aware that someone was in need of his assistance. Not one to shirk any sort of workload--especially not one that he had willingly taken on--Joshua set the half-solved Rubik's Cube on a nearby windowsill and went to see who was waiting. He knew that their injury would be burn marks and he privately wondered if they had been one of the idiots that had deserved what they'd gotten or if it had been a typical Fire student target. It turned out to be the latter when, to Joshua's mild surprise, he recognised the victim as someone that was very good friends with his girlfriend. The two of them didn't get along so well together but he always made an effort to be nicer to her than he normally would have been because of Nell. He'd only been friends with the Earth girl when he'd met Hannoly but not much had changed with the relationship status, only that he would perhaps be even more polite than usual. He could be civil if you gave him the chance.
"Hannoly," he said, both by way of greeting and to get her attention so that she knew that he was the one who was helping out today. "I see you've gone and gotten yourself injured again." He did not say this snidely, it was more matter of fact and even, surprisingly, almost amused. He had built up a sort of tolerance of the girl. She was really rather annoying at times but she was best friends with his girl so he was going to make do with whatever tolerance he had. Taking a look at the burn, he frowned slightly. It wasn't like her arm was falling off or anything, but it still wasn't a polite little scald. Of course not, Fire elementals were never in the business of being cordial. His brows pulled together. "This is quite a nasty piece of work," he commented. He was not impressed with whatever asshole had chosen to burn her because he knew Noly in all of her annoying glory and he knew that being a pain in the ass wasn't the best cause for attack. She probably didn't provoke it or anything.
Sighing slightly, he held out a hand with the intention of helping her to her feet if she wanted. "We should go in the back," he said, gesturing to the room from whence he'd came. "I'm a Fire elemental of course, so it's not like we really need much, but it's easier that way." He led the way into the room where the Rubik's Cube was still sitting abandoned on its sill. He washed his hands at the sink on the small counter and frowned at the selection of things to help a burn. His gray eyes settled on one that would ease the stinging pain and he resolved to keep that in mind. He could heal the burn but there would still be a discomfort for a few days. That would probably help. He'd deal with that later, however. "What did they do?" he asked, and it was in an almost conversational tone as he took her arm in his hands and inspected the burn. This was the sort of thing he enjoyed doing. Josh wanted to be a doctor, so why not have some elemental experience in the field as well? "I'll be able to heal it without any scarring," he added, a nonchalant sort of promise.
[I'm playing it like she irritates him but he's built up tolerance; I'ma shoot you up a PM after this with an idea xD]

Noly was simply sitting in the chair, musing over Nell's wearabouts during her accident, but was quickly snapped out of those thoughts when a voice spoke her name. She jumped a little bit, shocked to hear that voice calling her name. Yes, she knew it well, and she wasn't going to lie, she wasn't too excited about hearing it, either. It never failed, every time they were around each other, they argued and fought, even with Nell there to stop them. So she really wasn't over joyed when she heard Josh say her name. She looked up, though, and gave him a wry smile. "Yup. Cause it's always my fault that asshole's decide that it's 'let's make Noly's week hell'...week." She closed her mouth after that. She didn't want to dig herself a hole she couldn't get out of, plus, she didn't want to get anyone in trouble, even if they did just burn up her freakin' arm.
Of course, when he took hold of her arm, she winced a little bit, not quite ready for the pain that had followed it. After he spoke again, she gave him a nod. "Yeah...He sure knew what he was doing, alright." Of course, she had tried to speak the words under her breath, but she knew that Josh had like, super-hearing or something, he always seemed to hear her whispering to Nell anyways. She was a bit shocked when he offered his hand, but she took it, standing up. She released it almost as quickly as she stood, and straightened out her dress. Why she was wearing a dress, she didn't know, but now, there was a large hole near her side, right near her injured arm. Yes, the boy knew exactly what he was doing.
Without saying anything else, she followed him, still clutching her arm to herself. She really wasn't so sure about this, but she knew that Josh wouldn't physically hurt her. Tease her until her ears fell off, maybe, but never any actual injuries. He was smart. He knew that Nell might never talk to him again if he hurt her best friend. She gave a sigh as she paced a little bit before she stopped. No. She wouldn't tell him. She wasn't going to tell him. Screw it, she was telling him. "This time, I was cornered right outside of my dorm room. Didn't even say anything, just got a small little fireball thrown at my arm."
She didn't give any other information than that. She knew that some of these people were Josh's friends, she didn't want to put them in shit with him just because of a little burn. "Thanks, Josh. Really." She gave him a small smile before looking away. [/blockquote][/blockquote] ATTIRE

He arched a brow at her comment but didn't say anything about it. He believed that this boy had probably just attacked her without warning but Josh wasn't the sort of person that would normally get involved with something like this. He didn't like to play the hero. He wouldn't ask for names and hunt the person down to give him a piece of his mind--even if she was Nell's friend, Josh and Noly just barely managed to handle one another's presences at the moment. It wasn't that he wanted her hurt, he just wasn't going to go out of his way to be protective. Plus, his element was keeping a close eye on his movements thanks to Nell and the aftermath of the war. If he went around attacking them on a daily basis, the forced truce that the leaders had called in would be called right off, and Josh would be fair game. The common rooms were only safe right now because the leaders wanted to keep the peace.
In the quiet of the room and given their close proximity to one another, it wasn't too hard to pick up the words. Joshua did not have super hearing or anything of the sort, he just paid attention to people and picked up on things. "Did you even try to fight back?" This was accompanied by a slight roll of his eyes. He knew from Nell that Hannoly was constantly getting herself into sticky situations but as far as he knew there was nothing about her being a fighter. Josh was, however, willing to believe that she might be able to fight. People could surprise you, and just because he didn't hear about it at school didn't mean it never happened. Hell, maybe she kicked ass and people were just too fixed on defending their honour to admit it. Or... well, maybe she really was just a pacifist. They existed in the Water element as well as the Earth, though they were less common there.
Her explanation puzzled him. He paused in his examination of her injury to glance at her with a small frown. "Your dormitory?" he said. "And how exactly did a Fire student manage to find their way in there?" His voice bore a hint of sarcasm that he was trying hard not to show. It was very hard for him to behave himself in conversation with people that he didn't like, though clearly as he hadn't started poking fun at her defeat it was indeed possible for the Fire graduate. Besides, he figured that the question was a sensible one. The elements were all heavily protective of their dormitories and seeing as they all branched off from their respective commons, you'd need to get inside of those to get to the dorms themselves. Considering this, he paused and said, "Unless you mean outside the dormitory as a whole?" Sometimes people just generalized the dormitories, and it was possible she hadn't been talking about her individual room.
Of course, that was not the main point of this. The main point was that Noly was injured and he was supposed to be curing her, so he cleared his throat slightly and then did his best to focus on the conversation at hand. "Anyway, I'll just..." As he tried to word exactly what he was planning to do, he was quite surprised to get a thanks from the normally quite irritating Water student. He blinked, then nodded slightly. "Of course. It's not as if you deserved the burn." He shrugged as if dismissing it, but internally he was still reeling over this change in demeanour. Pushing it aside in order to focus on more pressing matters, he cautioned, "There might be a little pain at first, so just... don't be surprised." Focusing his energy, he found himself with a flicker of doubt. What if his powers didn't answer to him and he was left feeling like an idiot? Thankfully, however, with a slight pulse of scarlet warmth the wounds started to fade and vanish under his touch. It was as if the burns were slowly reversing themselves, turning smaller and then healing over completely. The skin was red and irritated where they had been, but it looked more like sunburn than anything now.

When his first question was asked, she shook her head. "You should have already known the answer to that one, Josh. You know I don't like to fight."
Sure, she didn't like to fight, but then again, that didn't stop her from asking Nell to teach her the other day. She was actually surprised that he was starting conversation. Though, she figured he was more making fun of her or punishing her than anything. He liked to do that. He always gave her those stern lectures her father used to give. His next question came, and the pounding in her head started again. "Yes my--Wait...No..You're right. It was...Outside. It seemed like...he was waiting for me." Her words got quiet, and her hand flew to her head. She had hoped that the stupid concussion she'd gotten earlier that week would be gone by now, but nope, it was still plaguing her. She gave a sigh. "I'm sorry. Everything's still fuzzy. I got...A pretty bad head injury on monday, and I guess it's still bothering me." Another shrug came from her. She didn't want him to worry even more, so she made it seem like it wasn't a big deal. She was a little nervous about the whole healing process. When he took her arm, she began to shake a little. She flinched a little at first, but the sensation turned more to the warm side, rather than pain. And it didn't take long either, which made Noly happy. When he was done, she looked down, smiling at what she saw. She moved it around a little bit. It stung like a sunburn, but she knew that would fade, and she was greatfull. "Thank you, again. I know I keep saying it, but I mean it." She gave him a nod before she sighed. She knew he would say something about her head, so she didn't move, simply waited to hear what he had to say.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

He just nodded when she said that she didn't like to fight, figuring that it wasn't worth it to nag her about how she should stick up for herself or anything like that. Josh only did that sort of thing when he knew that it wasn't a lost cause. He didn't go around telling Nell that she should get a fighting spirit, after all, because he knew that his girlfriend was a pacifist and that she wouldn't fight anyone even if she had the chance to. Maybe Noly was the same way. He knew her only from what he'd heard and what he'd seen, which wasn't too much. When they hung around one another there was more time spent swapping glares and remarks than anything else, but right now he was here to heal and so he was keeping personal issues with the girl to a minimum. "He probably was," Joshua concluded shamelessly when she guessed that the Fire elemental had been lying in wait. He wouldn't put it past one of his kind to lurk outside of the Water dormitories and attack. "Maybe you, maybe just the next person to come along, but..." He trailed off and shrugged. He didn't know the details and so he wasn't going to say that the guy had definitely been intending to attack her. Joshua was not psychic and not every Fire student was the same, so it was impossible to predict one person based on the actions of the whole. Josh, for example, wouldn't really be caught creeping outside a dormitory to attack someone for no reason.
Oh, dear. Head injuries were never a good sign and something like alarm flashed through his gaze almost immediately. It was probably the fact that he wanted to be a doctor when he was all grown up and graduated that peaked this sort of automatic concern. Head injuries were never a good thing. You're here to worry about a burn, not a bump on the head, he reminded himself firmly. He shoved the thought from his mind and gave his full concentration to the healing of her injury, noticing with mild surprise that she was shaking. He glanced at her for a moment but said nothing about the clear nervousness she was feeling. It would have been a low blow to taunt her at a vulnerable time like this and besides, he understood phobias of medical things. Confront him with a needle and see if he laughs about it. "That should do it," he announced when he was finished, nodding to himself as if satisfied. Another nod to accept her thanks and then Joshua's mind wandered back to what she'd said earlier about the head injury.
He quickly checked to make sure that no one else was waiting for treatment and then came back, closing the door softly behind him. "I know I'm only supposed to treat the burn," started Joshua, as if bracing her for the fact that he was going to ask questions and that she should be ready for them, "but what's this about a head injury?" Josh didn't realise that Hannoly had already been preparing herself for this and so she probably already had an answer for him. Lingering uncertainly, he eventually decided to go over to one of the back counters and lean against it, though he had his head turned toward Noly and was giving her his full attention. He just didn't want to seem like he was fussing over her or anything. Josh didn't fuss, not unless you were a very close friend of his. Even then, he tended to deal with things in a calm and controlled manner, much like he was not. "Concussions can be really serious; do you think you might have one?" He frowned a little at her. "And don't lie."

Noly nodded as Josh confirmed her suspicions. It might not have been her he was waiting for, but it was certainly someone. Noly just happened to be the first stupid person that stepped out of the building. And just like that he was back into doctor mode. She knew the questions were coming, but she bit her lip and looked towards her shoes anyways. "Well...Last week I was drawing, and a boy came out of no where and tried to take my book. He let go last minute and I smashed my head against the wall. He must've put in a couple of kicks after that too, because I had a couple bruised ribs." She gave a bit of a shrug, like it was the sort of thing that happened to her almost daily. Well...it pretty much was if you thought about it. She seemed to have ''PLANT FOOT HERE" written on her forehead.
When he began to speak of concussions, she nodded. She knew the speech well. The nurse had given her one, as well as Nell. "I do have one...I was off my feet for two days. The pain's not constant as it was when I first got it, but it comes and goes. And I forget stuff too. I mean..I'm a good student, and when I looked at a quiz the other day, I completely forgot everything I'd learned in the last few weeks." Once again, she shrugged. She'd dealt with that before, and she was sure it was going to happen again. There was no denying the inevitable. Sure, she could try to avoid it as long as possible, but she knew it was bound to happen.
She looked up to Josh then, a bit of a pleading look in her eyes. "Please, don't worry about it. And don't tell the nurse. She'll put me back in here for a couple more days, and I can't stand to be cooped up. Nell's taking care of me, I promise." She ended with a small puppy dog pout, hoping that and the mention of Nell would do the trick.
