Joshua was stressed beyond belief. He had been avoiding Nell and his mother just wouldn't stop calling him. He hadn't answered a single one of her calls and they had progressed to text messages that were increasingly threatening as time went on. It had been about two weeks since the catastrophic argument with his father and two weeks since he'd spoken to Nell. Why was he avoiding her, anyway? It was indirectly her fault that he was now broke and homeless, but he didn't blame her for any of that. He had stood up to his father because of her and now he was going out of his way to stay as far from her as possible. She'd tried to call him a few times but he'd either ignored the calls or made excuses to get out of them very soon after picking up. When he saw her in a hallway he would immediately turn around and act like he was going the other way in a hurry. He was ashamed of himself for acting like this and shunning her--none of this was even her fault. But Josh didn't know how to tell her that she was the reason he'd been quite whole-heartedly disowned by his own father. It was awkward to think of where that conversation would go and it wasn't like he'd be able to do a decent job of hiding it from her. The moment she asked to come over to his house, Josh would be forced to spill. If she asked him to go somewhere that costed money, he'd need to admit that he didn't have any. Or he would need to make excuses, but how long would it be before she realised he was bluffing? So, with his embarrassment and determination to keep this under wraps, Joshua had continually said nothing.
One of his friends from class was trying to talk to him, sounding rather chipper and not yet having realised that anything was wrong. She was a bit of an airhead and she liked to prattle on about nothing at all, so they weren't really friends, more like friendly acquaintances. Sometimes they studied for History together considering that was her major and it was one thing that they had in common. "--so then he said something about his dog and hung up. Is that a good sign?" She bit the edge of her pen and glanced at him shyly, asking the opinion of a guy whose number she'd gotten. "Uh, I don't know--look, maybe I'm not the best person to ask about things like this." It wasn't really a secret that Joshua didn't have much experience with actual relationships. If she'd been looking for advice in dealing with a one-night-stand or a fuckbuddy he might have been a little more helpful (though maybe not with his current state of mind) but at present he had much more pressing things on his mind. "Ahw, but you and your girlfriend are so cute together!" Like that, for example. You mean the girlfriend I've been avoiding for two weeks? Yeah, real cute. Even the thought was sarcastic, but he tried not to show this on the surface. "Yeah, thanks, uh--listen, I've got to go..." And he muttered something about studying and parted ways with her, ducking down a hallway to try and lose her in the crowd before she could realise where he'd gone. He felt incredibly guilty about avoiding Nell, but dashing around his friends and acquaintances was a little less gut-wrenching. Besides, it wasn't like he had a lot of those to go around.
The gleaming white Lamborghini Aventador in the parking lot was like a godsend as he strode over to it. He wasn't going so fast as to attract any attention to himself, but with the car standing out like a beacon regardless it wasn't like he had to try very hard. Joshua usually preferred to drive one of the less flashy family vehicles to school because he didn't like people to ask questions or stare, but seeing as he had nowhere else to park the car, this was where it went. He didn't even really have a destination in mind--he just wanted to get away from the school before anyone could ask questions. He'd been trying to stay at school as much as possible but seeing as he wasn't a boarding student, he had none of their special accommodations. If you didn't board, for example, you had to pay if you wanted food from the mess hall on the weekends. Plus, there was still the impending doom that was college tuition for the next year. He was covered until January as he'd paid at the beginning of the year, but until then? Josh had no idea what he was going to do. Financial aid was out of the question. There was no way he'd go through the shame and humiliation of asking for help. He reached his car and paused as his cellphone vibrated in his pocket, debating on whether he should check it or just assume that it was his mother and get into the car, which lay in waiting with the scissor doors lifted. People were staring, of course, but they were the last thing on his mind. Though... maybe it would have been a good idea to make sure certain people didn't notice him...

Nell believed her life as of late could be comparable to an episode of Scooby Doo. It started with the arrival of Jane and the imagined clap of thunder and branches of lightning around her fahter’s mansion when she saw her. Now it had become a routine to go out to dinner and talk with her father and Jane, all the while trying to uncover the mystery that is her aunt while volleying underhanded insults that León either ignored or was oblivious to. And there was the fact that Jane wanted to speak to her alone so that they could banter without filters due to the lack of the man’s presence. Or as she said, the interesting and enticing conversations Sinclair women loved. All she needed was a sidekick dog and a psychedelic van and she could go around solving mysteries. She cradled the phone between her ear and shoulder as she walked out of the school. ”No, I’m not dealing with her tonight,” she said to her father on the other end. ”’Dealing’?” the man asked and she quickly rebutted, ”Yes, dealing. She’s a nightmare, papa.” His voice was stern with the next words.
She made her way across the grounds, and waved at a group of friends who were calling her over, then pointed to the phone hidden beneath strands of hair. ”You are the one who wanted us to stop planning things behind your back, Nell.” Well, that came round to bite her in the ass, didn’t it? Actually, everything did. With a light sigh, she took out Doritos from her messenger bag, and her father must have heard the crunch. ”Are you eating?” he asked in what sounded like a disbelieving tone, though her with food at hand should not be the least bit surprising. ”I ‘an eat and 'alk at the same time,” she said, speaking around the chips. There wasn’t even a sigh on the other line, even though she knew that he was probably exasperated with her. It was funny how even after all this time, there was a sort of paternal connection that enabled her to understand him in certain ways or predict his actions.
”Since you are busy with your food, I will let you go,” he said, and before hanging up he added, ”And you’re coming over for dinner tonight.” The line went dead before she could get on him about ordering her to do something. He can’t order her around, he was not her father and could not lecture her like one. But even that didn’t rile her up as it once would have. No, her mind was more focused on Jane and what exactly the woman was cooking up in her head. The worst part is realizing that all of this was a secret—it became apparent when she had these thoughts on her mind as she stopped to chat with some friends. “I’m a murderer,” she could say if she wished to speak the truth. “And my aunt’s a manipulative bitch. How’s your life?”
However, there was one person she could have told this to, and his name was Josh. That is, if she could get a hold of him. He’d been elusive as big foot, and at first she’d believed that it had been because he was busy. School had just started up and there was a lot of work for everyone. But he was bust a lot more than usual, and she had barely spoken to him in weeks. And when she went to his house, she’d be curtly informed by his father that he wasn’t home. It seemed everyone was acting strange. Or maybe it was just her and her paranoia. As if she didn’t have enough fear in her life, she had to have Jane pop in and flounce around Canada and add an extra helping of anxiety. But no, she was sure that Josh was avoiding her and the only explanation she could conclude to was that she had done something wrong. She often went over the last conversations she had with him in her head before he started snubbing her, trying to remember if she’d told him something that may have made him act so shifty.
Thinking that she’d need to add Josh to her list of Scooby Doo cases for the gang, she saw him in the parking lot next to his Aventador. The car that had been parked even over the weekends, which she thought was odd. You’re not avoiding me, mister, there aren’t any hallways to change direction in. Taking her hand out of the bag, she waved as she walked over to him. ”Hey Josh,” she said, and then hesitated a bit. It wasn’t that she was at a loss for what to say—there were a lot of things she wanted to say to him. “Where the hell have you been? I know you’ve been avoiding me. Let’s talk it out, mano-a-mano.” Instead, she took the devious approach and asked with a breezy tone, ”Where’ve you been lately? I haven’t talked to you in a while. I’ve missed you.” Translation: “I noticed what you’ve been doing”. And she was worried and freaking out just a little bit. She was already frayed at the edges thanks to stress, and now that her boyfriend was acting so oddly, it just worsened it. I don’t think I said anything, I’m pretty sure. Holding out the bag, she offered, ”Chips? Cool ranch.” Translation: “Just talk to me, dammit.” Maybe the best route to take wasn’t to use devious tactics, but she wasn’t going to outright state that she noticed him avoiding her. That felt rather awkward.

Though he didn't comically freeze or act suspicious when Nell caught his attention by waving at him, internally Joshua was like a deer in the headlights. He didn't want to have to deal with this and there was no crowd of people around that he could deftly lose himself in. He wanted to pretend that he hadn't seen her, but as she called to him quite clearly in the next second Josh realised that this option was out. Shit. He hated being cornered like this but it wasn't as if he was going to run. No, Josh would just treat this as he had all of his other encounters thus far: act like nothing was wrong. So he fixed a smile on his face, forgetting that he wasn't a person that usually smiled and so this only worked to make the situation even more odd. "Hi, Nell. Almost didn't see you there." Oh, he'd seen her perfectly fine and he could hear crystal clear as well, he just didn't want to do this. Even now the teenager was casting around his mind for ways to avoid the situation and to slither out of the way. He had been as slippery as an eel with his tactics for two entire weeks, but it only made sense that his girlfriend would seek him out eventually. When you were dating someone it wasn't exactly what you could call normally to just suddenly up and disappear. He hadn't told her what he was 'busy' doing whenever she'd called, he'd (obviously) never been home when she'd dropped by, and talking to her face to face was something he might even have been having nightmares about if he slept deep enough to dream. But the game was up--he couldn't avoid her now.
"I've just had a lot of things to do," he said with a casual wave of his hand, as if they were talking about something as light and cheery as the day's weather--which actually wasn't quite light and cheery. It was muggy and hot outside, he just didn't take much notice. Thank goodness for being a Fire elemental. "With school being back and all, I've got plenty of work, you know?" This might have been convincing if not for the fact that work had never stopped Joshua from hanging around her before. Even with the hell that was his double major and the fact that he always tried to do top quality assignments, Josh had always squeezed in time for his girlfriend before; even if it had meant hanging around in libraries, he hadn't cared. She had always been more important to him than working alone and so Joshua had been willing to adjust some things. Would Nell notice this? She was certainly not someone to be blinded from things. Normally this was a quality that he admired in the girl but at present he was whole-heartedly wishing this was not the case. "I missed you too." At least this was the truth. Josh really did long for the time they'd once been able to spend together, even if it was only to have a brief chat or to complain about having loads of schoolwork. She cheered him up just by sticking around and so avoiding her hadn't been easy--no, it was merely something the boy had deemed as a necessity.
He couldn't do this. His throat tightened as she held out the bag of Doritos. It wasn't usually something that would get to him but the fact that she was being so nice and friendly after he'd avoided her for two weeks worried him. Was she angry and trying to cover it up? Upset and trying to cover it up? It had to be a cover for something--Josh wasn't behaving normally and Nell surely couldn't be completely fine with this. "I'm good," he said in the polite tone he usually reserved for people he was not well acquainted with. Normally he would not have said no, but he was trying to get out of this. Giving a start as if he'd just noticed something, Josh hurriedly spoke, "Um, I'm sort of in a hurry--could we cut this short?" In other words he was asking permission to leave the conversation, though he wasn't really expecting an affirmative answer. This was obvious by the way he took another step toward his car, though backward so he was still slightly facing Nell. "I've got somewhere I need to be." Not wanting this to sound too bad, he said, "I'll call you later?" This was a lie--and one he actually felt guilty telling. Even if she swallowed it, Joshua knew that he would have no intentions of actually getting in contact with Nell after this confrontation. He would go right back to avoiding her like the coward he was, too scared to own up to his mistakes or try to make things right. He didn't realise that she was blaming herself.

Nell was already anxious upon seeing Josh, and though it should have reassured her, the smile that found its way onto his face just made her feel worse. Why are you smiling at me? Even when he was happy, he usually didn’t smile. It just wasn’t something Josh did. Which is why her stomach only twisted into more knots like the panic was a boy scout in her gut. I definitely did something. Why else would he be acting so flighty and strange and suspicious? And the creeping sense of anxiety only worsened. She wasn’t stupid, she could tell something was up. She knew Josh, much better than a while go when everything he did was shrouded in mystery. ”Yeah, I get it,” she still said, her smile not quite crinkling her eyes like it usually did because she was focused on the pessimistic thoughts in her head. Still, she prattled, ”School is killer getting back into the swing of things.” This is inane, Nell, grow a pair! But she felt uncomfortable. What would she say? If it turned out that she was just being paranoid, then she’d just look like an idiot. The last time she assumed something, she’d been terribly, terribly wrong. But this was different. Josh usually didn’t avoid her like he was doing now, and she could tell it was on purpose. She shook her head a bit, and said, ”I could help you out, you know.” Nell fell silent after that, not knowin where to go from there. She just wanted to talk to him, and now clipped conversations, either. Actually sit down and speak to him. Because she sure as hell didn’t have the chance to, as of late.
He politely denied the offer, and she held the bag against her chest. There was a pause as she tried to think of something else to say, when abruptly he jolted and asked the conversation to be cut short. Nell liked to be an honest person, probably because she wasn’t a very good liar. So she decided to be straightforward instead of trying to dance around th esubject. As much as he was pretending there wasn’t anything going on, she knew there was. And she needed to stop him from getting in that car and leaving, so she just said the first thing that came to mind. ”Did I do something…wrong?” She spoke the words plainly and unfiltered, and once it was out she couldn’t take it back. That could really be the only explanation. She looked at him with large inquiring eyes, as if ready to absorb whatever he told her next. After biting her lip for a moment, she said softly, ”It feels like you’ve been avoiding me.” Nell certainly did not like to dance around subjects, and she was going to tell him what was on her mind now. Because if she let him go, she knew there would be no call later. He hadn’t tried to get in touch with her, it was her that has been trying to get a hold of him. For a moment, Nell wanted to chicken out and add on, “But I’m just being paranoid.” She refused. It wasn’t just paranoia, and she decided to trust her gut instinct on this, even though doing that was more of a coin flip than anything.

He didn't like this chipper conversation with both of them pretending that nothing was wrong. He was somewhat getting his way in the sense that Nell hadn't gotten onto him about his avoidance yet (maybe she hadn't noticed; was that too much to hope?) but he was quickly learning that he didn't really want this either. He didn't want any of this. Hiding from her sucked because it meant they couldn't spend any time together like they used to--it was having an effect on his mood, too. With the combination of being kicked out and not hanging around his girlfriend his moods had definitely dropped to a new low. He was more short in terms of his temper, more like he used to be when he had no one he trusted to calm him down every now and then. Besides, mood swings aside he still just missed the friendship. It had been nice, having someone he could talk to and trust as he did Nell. This was not nice; all of this pretending was going to have a negative impact, he could just feel it. "No, it's fine," he replied, trying to sound nonchalant. "You've got your own stuff to worry about, don't concern yourself with me." Her offer to help with something he didn't even need help with only increased the guilt. He didn't understand, as was usual, why Nell was such a nice and genuine person. How had he ever ended up with someone like her? Though they'd been in a relationship for months, Joshua still didn't quite understand what had happened, how it had come to be this way. He was not a good person and what he was doing now with all of the avoiding and dancing around the issue was proving that. What would he do when Nell finally accepted this and walked away? He didn't even want to think about it.
His gut twisted when at last she confronted him about what was going on. He supposed that he should have expected this, seeing as she had stalked him down after all, but that didn't make it any less stressful when it happened. "I--" he started, before realising that he probably shouldn't finish that sentence for the sake of their relationship and smartly closing his mouth. If he continued to run away and avoid her, she'd get sick of it eventually, right? He remembered the last confrontation that they'd had and sincerely hoped that she wasn't as angry or upset as she'd been that time. This time she actually had a reason to be upset with him and Joshua couldn't even promise himself that he'd remain calm if she started shouting or spitting accusations again. He had gotten really riled up the last time. Joshua felt bad about Nell blaming herself--of course, why didn't he think of this before? It wasn't really surprising that she'd think something was wrong. "It's not your fault," he said a little too quickly. "Not... not exactly." He mentally kicked himself for adding those last words. Instead of being reassuring they'd probably just made things worse. It was her fault, if only by a little amount. He didn't blame her for the way that his father had treated him or the fact that he'd been kicked out but it was still because of her that Donovan had put his foot down and disowned him. It was her fault (indirectly) that he was broke and homeless and incredibly stressed out right now. He didn't want to tell her that.
She wasn't behaving as if she were angry. The lip-biting and softly spoken words suggested just the opposite. Joshua would somewhat preferred that she yelled, actually. Giving him a reason to get snippy with her and storm off would have been a lot better than backing him into a guilt-filled corner as she was now. He cast a glance toward his car almost as if debating a coward's way out, then turned his gaze back to Nell. His face was almost expressionless but there was something like desperation in his gray eyes that he couldn't seem to block out with his façade. "I haven't been--" Again he cut himself short. Nell's not stupid, she's figured it out. Most of his friends had accepted his odd behaviour as normal simply because they did not know Joshua very well. Nell was different. He was convinced at times that only Trish knew him better than she--Donovan certainly didn't seem to understand him as much as his girlfriend did. "Alright," he caved, "I have, but it's not--don't blame yourself." He'd been about to say 'it's not what you're thinking', but he really wasn't sure what exactly she was thinking apart from the fact that it was her fault so he amended his words. "I'm sorry, I just can't... I don't know what to do." A hint of the desperation leaked into his tone at the end. He really didn't know what to do--about money, about shelter, about Nell... about anything, really.

Not at all surprised that he turned her down—she knew that he was lying in a sense and she’d only just wanted some way to talk to him—and it made her feel a bit worse. Josh obviously didn’t want to be around her, she didn’t know why she was trying. Because I love him. Yeah, that was a good reason. But she just nodded and accepted it, darting her eyes to the side for a moment so she could think before he gave his rather hesitant reply. Nell bristled a bit when he said that it was not her fault—not exactly. The additonal words bolstered her suspicions that she’d said or done something to make him like this. She’d certainly done something, but what? No matter how many times she wracked her brain for explanations, she just couldn’t understand. ”Then what is it?” she asked, shaking her head. ”And what do you mean by ‘not exactly’?” Her voice was punched with concern. By this point, she just wanted to understand what the heck was going on. Josh openly admitted that he was avoiding her, and she just wanted to know why so she could fix it. He insinuated that it was in some way her fault, so why didn’t he just tell her what she did wrong? Or maybe it wasn’t fixable. It was hard to determine when she didn’t even know what it was she did that had made him avoid her. Or maybe she just knew this would happen. She always wondered why he put up with her, ever since she told him to dispose of her phone in the strangest way and because she was acting so shiftily. Everyone you love will leave you. But she didn’t want to accept that as a part of her life.
Nell was just waiting for more excuses, she had a feeling that these elusive answers were coming. She couldn’t expect more, not with his behavior lately, behavior that was just adding onto her distress. During a time when the person who hated you most in the world was paying you a visit, it would be nice to have the person you trusted most in the world for support. She wouldn’t complain to him, oh god no, but having his presence would be enough. But it was just impossible to get a hold of him, he was just like water through her fingers. She sighed, and said, ”Why don’t you start by telling me what’s up?” Nell didn’t sound angry, because she wasn’t. She didn’t undestand enough to be angry, and she didn’t want a repeat of the last time she’d gotten so mad. ”I’d really appreciate having a straight answer instead of playing guessing games.” Her voice carried the anxiety she was feeling, and she really didn’t want it to. But it was very perturbing having your boyfriend pretty much ignore you for weeks. And she really didn’t want to consider the fact that he might want to end it between them. Josh would tell me, right? If she’d done something that made him want to break up with her, he’d confront her about it. She knew that she wasn’t good with this whole relationship deal and even after months she still didn’t know…well, anything. Josh would definitely help if he could just give her a straight answer instead of trying to run away. Feeling that her last words may have been taken a bit harshly, she said, ”I just want to know why.” She shoved her hand in her pocket to give all appearances of being nonchalant when in fact she felt like panicking. It was just a human defense mechanism—pretend like nothing’s bothering you.

Joshua was really starting to panic now. Though there were few external signs of his fight or flight mechanism, it was indeed kicking in and prodding him to get the fuck out of there as soon as possible. He glanced around the parking lot as if scoping it out, trying to figure out who might be close enough to overhear their conversation. "It's complicated," he said automatically. He hated hiding from Nell but he also hated the idea of informing her that she was the reason his life had gone to shit. Nell tended to blame herself for things that weren't her fault to begin with and seeing that this actually was he was starting to get worried about how she might take it. But you won't know, because you're not going to tell her. Could he maybe just pass it off as nothing and go on as if nothing was wrong? Perhaps juggle his crumbling life along with his relationship so that he didn't have to lose everything at once? But no. Nell knew about his life, she knew where he lived and his rich lifestyle. She'd surely notice that he wasn't spending lavishly or inviting her over to hang out at the mansion like he usually did. He cast another glance around the lot, trying to be subtle about it. He couldn't do this, not with so many people around. There were enough rumours going around about him without this adding to the mix.
He really wished that she would get angry with him, yell at him, something to convince Joshua that he was at least somewhat justified in his avoidance. No such luck. Nell was just concerned and it was practically dripping from her words as she asked him to inform her of what was going on. He couldn't keep shutting her out when she had this perfect method of guilting him into things. The saddest part about it was that she probably wasn't trying to back him into a corner even though she was doing a wonderful job of it. "That would be great," he said with a hint of exasperation, "if I could give you a straight answer." Stressed, Joshua pulled a hand through his dark hair and made a noise of frustration in his throat. His calm and careful façade was starting to slip--how the hell was he going to go about handling this? She was right about his forcing her to play guessing games but would she ever guess what had happened? What way did Nell have of knowing that his father had found out? He didn't believe that she had any sort of indication. He still wasn't quite sure how his father had even found out about the murder in the first place but it hardly mattered now--what mattered was the fact that Josh was disowned because of her and she did have the right to know why.
No longer able to keep denying her when she asked yet again for the truth, he pressed his lips together for a moment before nodding slightly. "Alright," he said, closing his eyes for a moment. He took a deep breath to try and steady his trembling nerves before opening his eyes and looking at her seriously. "Just... not here. I don't want anyone to..." His lips twitched almost apologetically and he gestured around them in the hopes that he didn't have to explain. He hated admitting that he was embarrassed about this so he didn't want to force himself into forming the words. "Why don't we go to your apartment, or something?" He didn't want anyone overhearing. He bit his lip, hovering awkwardly for a moment as he felt the guilt wash over him in waves. Why had he waited so fucking long to tell her? Because this is about her, no matter what you said to your father. It was her fault. He couldn't find it in his heart to blame her but he really couldn't think of a way to convince her it wasn't. She was the reason. This might not go well. "I've got to take my car... it'll make sense when I tell you." He didn't feel safe leaving his baby here. "If you're taking your own car or if you need to get anything..." Another way of his hand, indicating that she should go ahead. He wouldn't run. The time for being a coward needed to come to an end.

Now that she was on the receiving end on the phrase, she realized how disconcerting it was. He had a fullproof way of not getting her to push past that. What could she say to it? ”Okay,” is what she settled for, spoken slowly as if still trying to comprehend what he’d said. Why did those two words have to be so perfect for avoiding further questions? When he expresssed his wishes for a straight answer, she just grew confused. ”Why can’t you?” she asked. Really, what was stopping him? He was really just making her even more anxious, and she shifted her weight from foot to foot. What was really going on here? All she knew that it was somehow—in some way—her fault and Josh just wouldn’t tell her. Why aren’t you just being straight with me? Even if it was something bad, she’d rather hear it then being fed half-assed responses to everything she asked. ”Nevermind,” she said, amending the words. ”It’s complicated.” Though that may have come off as bitter, it really was just her acknowledging that it must have been hard for him. Right? That’s why he wasn’t telling her? She didn’t know because he wouldn’t tell her.
She was a bit surprised when he relented. Blinking a few times in the time before she answered she repeated, ”All right?” She was expecting the explanation right then, but apparently Josh didn’t want to talk about it in a parking lot. Understand. No, not understandable because I don’t understand what’s going on here. ”That’s fine,” she said acquiescently. Nell didn’t care where they talked, she just wanted to talk. Now that he was willing—well, still seemingly reluctant—it would be easier. ”Yeah, sure.” Ace moved out earlier in the month, so now she didn’t have to worry about him getting involved with whatever Josh was going to tell her. Is he going to break up with me? She couldn’t help the negative thoughts, not with Josh’s behavior lately. ”We can take your car,” she said, still a little tense with anxiety. She didn’t mind leaving her Cruiser in the Academy parking lot. She wouldn’t mind leaving it on top of the Chrysler building. ”I’ve gotta get something first.” She’d put the books she needed for homework in between classes, when she did plan on driving home. Nell waited a bit before actually turning to go where her car was parked though—if she turned her back, would he immediately jump in his car and drive away? Nell decided to just go get her books.
Leaning over in the back seat, she gathered the two text books she needed before crawling back out and turning to see Jane walking up, like the Grim Reaper herself. "What are the chances, Nelly, I didn't expect to see you out here. How delightful!" Jane called out, sounding genuinely please. ”What are you doing here, Jane?” she asked quite rudely. The woman seemed relaxed, looking off in the distance as she finally reached to where her niece stood. ”It seems the art of pleasantries is still eluding you, Nelly. I came to visit you, since you told me you were enjoying the Academy. And as alumnus, well, they feel as if I'm an...honored guest.” Jane waved her fingers to emphasize the word 'honored'. The younger girl just shook her head and said, ”I have to go somewhere, so unless you’ve got something important to say, don’t waste my time.” Jane laughed shortly as if finding the girl very amusing. When in actuality, the littlest things she said irked Jane to no end. Minor sarcasm turned huge thanks to the hate she already held for her. ”I don’t care where you have to go,” Jane said, and even though the woman’s voice was entirely pleasant, it chilled Nell like nothing else. ”You really overestimate my patience. I don’t have time for your little games, Nelly. You will listen to what I have to say, and if you try to walk away, I can't promise my temper will not flare. Do I make myself clear?”
”What makes you think I’ll listen to anything you say?” Nell shot back, feeling a rare sort of anger rise in her chest. Jane thought she could just speak a few choice words and the girl would bend to her will. She wanted to make it clear that she would not be sticking around to listen to anything the woman had to say. And so she braced herself for what she was about to say. ”Only my mother can order me to listen to her…but she’s not around anymore, right, Aunt Jane? I made sure of that.” It was a low blow, a very low blow, but this was her defense mechanism kicking in. And if the woman thought Tilly was a fair target in her insults, then she would use the thing that made her aunt hate her above all else in the same way she usually did. There was also the undercurrent of sarcasm, because Nell was pointing out the lie that Jane was painting of her as a cold-blooded killer. This seemed to get the goat—she really didn’t have very good patience as she grabbed Nell’s arm and slammed her against the car with unneccesary force. ”Let go of me, Jane,” she said heatedly. Instead, the grip on her arm tightened. Even though it didn’t show, Nell was terrified. This woman was a much more powerful than her in every way, and they were at the Academy. If she chose to attack her, then she could very easily do it with her element. But how far would she go? ”I don’t think I will, Nelly,” Jane said in the same cheerful voice. She was very pissed, that much was clear. ”As a matter of fact, I think I'll forgo any conversation and slit your throat open right here to save the formality of a trial.” As if to emphasize her point, ice started to form along her fingernails like fucking Wolverine, finely pointed and dangerous-looking. Not good, so not good.

Nell's constant insistence that he should tell her and her questions were really starting to get on his last nerve. It was ironic that the one girl that he loved and trusted still managed to irk him for the most unfathomable of reasons. At the same time, he understood that it was a normal reaction to be upset by the fact that your boyfriend was ignoring you and so Josh forced himself to remain calm for the sake of their getting along. He was only so irritated because he really couldn't see a way out of this situation other than to tell her, and it was with this thought in mind that he finally caved in. Bet she's pleased, he thought bitterly, then kicked himself. This isn't Nell's fault, he tried to argue fairly, it's your fathers. You know that. But of course this was not a good enough explanation. Yeah, but it's Nell's fault Dad overreacted, isn't it? There was no way to win this internal argument and so Josh just did his best to calm down and not say anything snippy to his girlfriend. "Yes," he repeated a little tersely. "I'll tell you." It was clear that he didn't like this, but Joshua knew that it was better than some of his other alternatives. Continual ignorance would likely be the end of their relationship and as much as it was difficult for someone like Josh to suck up his pride, this was an exception. He had enough determination and force of will to suck it up for Nell, at least. She mattered more to him than his dignity. Sighing, he said, "I'm not angry at you." He knew that it might have seemed that way by the way he was acting and he wanted to dismiss such negative thoughts before they could come to fruition. "I'm just... stressed." That was in no way a lie, at least.
He could have gotten into his car and waited for Nell, but in an effort to restore her faith in his intentions Joshua merely lingered outside of the sports car, leaning against the door which he had since pulled back down again. The sun glanced off of it in blinding rays so Joshua pulled his sunglasses out and slipped them on, casting a shaded glance over to Nell's car and wondering how long it was going to take her to get what she needed. Gray eyes narrowed from behind the dark glasses as he noticed someone else approaching her, someone who was completely unfamiliar to him. He did not recognise the similarities between she and Nell because he was not close enough, but he did wonder who they were and what they wanted from her. Maybe a professor? She certainly didn't look to be school aged--not from this distance, at any rate. He settled into the idea that Nell might have forgotten something in class and would have dropped all other suspicions at that point if not for the fact that the woman started forward a moment later and slammed Nell against her car. Josh didn't know the context of the situation--all he knew was that in the next moment he was moving toward them, no thought in mind but that he'd quite like to strangle this stranger. Wrap his hands around her throat and wring her neck. He had an impulsive reaction of rage at any time that he saw Nell hurt or even endangered, probably because she was the only person that he really cared about other than his family. He was loyal to his friends, of course, but this loyalty went beyond that.
"--slit your throat open right here to save the formality of a trial.”
He only had a moment of confusion (Trial? How does she know about that?) before rage insisted that it didn't matter who this woman was or what she knew. I don't think so, he thought, shaking as he reached them in time to see the sharp shards of ice forming on the woman's fingers. He was not so angry that he didn't register the fact that this was a graduated Water elemental that could likely thrash him with a display of her powers, but he was too enraged to care. A sharp movement of his hand melted the ice and in the next moment he stepped forward to both try and shove the woman away from Nell and punch her rather unceremoniously in the face. It didn't matter to him that she was a woman or that he didn't know the context, all that mattered was that you didn't talk about slitting his girlfriend's throat when he was in the vicinity, thank-you-very-much. "And just what the fuck do you think you're doing?" he challenged, tone both fierce and stupidly brave. Anger made him reckless and he was very clearly affected by this situation--he was trembling and he looked as if containing himself was a very difficult thing to do. The infamous temper of a Fire student was not something easily missed, and coupled by the fact that he'd made a move to melt the ice his element was fairly obvious. He was being stupid, but again, he didn't care. He wanted to see if Nell was alright but he didn't dare take his eyes off the bitch, breathing a bit heavily and glaring at her.

Nell wasn’t counting on Josh’s interference, she was mainly focused on Jane and the fear that she may just kill her. But would the woman really do it? It’d just make her a hypocrite and land her in jail, after all. Plus, they were in a school parking lot. So she wouldn’t go too far, or at least Nell hoped. In any case, she wasn’t going to even defend herself, because there was really nothing she could do. Jane was older and stronger, both physically and elementally. She couldn’t push away, even if she tried, with the fierce grip on her arm. And ice wasn’t very friendly to plants, even if Nell felt confident enough to create a vine to trip Jane up or something. Needless to say, the girl was terrified. Why can’t I keep my mouth shut? she thought angrily to herself. She really only provoked Jane with her words, but still, the woman didn’t have reasonable or controlled responses.
She was so tuned into the fear she felt, that she blinked as she watched the ice melt away from Jane’s hand, and then Josh was there, pushing her away and clocking her in the face. Nell gasped lightly as she pressed herself against the car as if using it for safety, keeping her eyes on Jane. The woman's own eyes were fixated on Josh, who vehemently—and rhetorically—asked Jane what she thought she was doing. He was angry, Nell saw that much, which was very, very bad. She wanted to tell him to go and run, but she kenw it would be in vain. She didn’t want Josh to get hurt, and it was more than a possibility, knowing the woman. Or would she just put on an act and pretend that she wasn’t just about to attack her niece? ”Well, I think that much is very clear,” Jane said easily, as if she hadn’t just been punched in the face. Her tone took on a cold edge as she continued, “I just wished to speak with Nelly here. However, I could ask you the same thing.” Jane took a step forward, seeming very relaxed. Nell watched, braced against the car as she prayed that her aunt wouldn’t hurt her boyfriend. ”I suggest you refrain from putting your nose people’s business.” The words were evenly spaced as if she were forcing Josh to understand them. ”I take it you’ll be leaving now? I’m afraid I have no desire to concern myself with Fire kiddies who are obviously out of their league.” Jane put on one of her charming smiles, and Nell really wanted Josh to leave just so that Jane wouldn’t feel the need to go after him.
Nell found her voice then, and desperately said, ”Jane, stop. You’re making a scene.” That probably wasn’t the best argument to use against her however—Jane loved making scenes, she loved attention. Turning her gaze to Nell for a split second—and in the second, they somehow took on a colder gaze—Jane said, ”Oh, don’t worry, Nelly. I’ll be finished here straight away.” Eyes once again on Josh, the woman lifted an inquiring eyebrow. Using it as a threat, an orb of water formed in her hand. Knowing that Josh was a Fire elemental, she understood that she had the upperhand. And even if he wasn’t, she’d have likely stood a very goood chance—the Sinclairs were proud of their heritage, and even though they led their own lives in the real world, they made sure to continously hone their skills. Jane was the matriarch of that family, and Nell could feel her heart ramming against her rib cage as she considered just how much damage her aunt could do if she really wanted to.

She was brave and she seemed cocky, something to be expected from a Water elemental that probably understood full well that they had the clear advantage. She could probably kick his ass and it wasn't like he could rely on Nell or anyone else in the parking lot for any sort of backup. Joshua, however, was nothing if not reckless when he was angry. He didn't care how much stronger or more confident in her abilities she was right now. All he cared about was Nell and how serious this bitch had sounded when she'd threatened to slit her throat. "Speak to her?" A harsh laugh burst from his throat. "Are you sure you know what that means? It didn't look like speaking to me." Maybe the threat had been empty and this woman really hadn't been planning to cause any real harm to his girlfriend, but threats and mild violence were enough to set off his temper. Hell, some people who'd simply insulted Nell had gotten on his bad side without a single threat of violence against her. The only thing stopping him from leaping at this woman and trying to initiate some real combat was a certain wariness exercised by the intelligent part of his brain. It was not a conscious decision to withhold, for he was certainly still thinking about attacking her again. The more she talked, the worse the desire to hit her again became. "I think I made it pretty obvious," he retorted when she flipped the question around on him.
Part of him wanted to step back when she stepped forward, but pride and resolute stubbornness would not allow him to back down. Instead Joshua tensed as if he was readying himself for a physical confrontation, though he didn't make the first move. He ignored her comment about keeping his nose out of her business--hell, she'd made it his business the moment she had chosen to attack Nell like that. He hated the idea of her getting hurt and he loathed this woman for hurting her. What had Nell even done to deserve this sort of treatment? "Will I hell," he snapped when she basically suggested that he leave. He wasn't going to just go and sit in his car while this woman terrorised his girlfriend. His gray eyes narrowed as she basically called him a child, though he knew that there probably was a massive age difference and that she was right--he was out of his league, here. It didn't matter. "I have no intentions of leaving until you do." Internally he was worrying about how far this lady was going to take this, but his protectiveness over Nell wouldn't allow him to leave. He could guess just by her looks that she'd probably reached the peak of her powers already and Joshua was still only a sophomore in college. Even if she'd been Earth or Thunder, even with his skill with the gift, she was better. Loads better. It certainly didn't do anything for confidence, but he didn't need confidence when he was angry.
Jane? That was her name? It rang a bell somewhere in the distant back of his mind, but he didn't care enough at the moment to analyse who the fuck he was talking to. Nell's voice should have calmed him a little but it didn't help, especially not when Jane addressed her. Her next move was to create an orb of water, a clear threat, and though Joshua hesitated for a moment his pride and determination once again locked him into place. He would lose quite terribly if he fought her, that much didn't even need to be debated, but he'd fight simply because he didn't see another option. The only alternative was to leave Nell with this bitch and this was not something he liked the sound of. "Leave," he said pointedly. "I don't know who the fuck you are but I sure as hell won't let you hurt Nell." Joshua didn't like to play the hero. He hated the idea of putting himself in danger to save other people--he'd always been a tad on the selfish side, there. But there were exceptions, and Nell was most definitely an exception. He loved her even though he'd been avoiding her for the past two weeks and he wasn't going to throw her to the wolves. "Nell's right, you're causing a scene," he added almost arrogantly. "You might be able to get the better of me, but what'll happen when the Academy's tipped off?" He couldn't exactly count on any of the professors finding out. Joshua was just bluffing, buying for time if you will. If they did, though, an older Earth or Thunder elemental would be a problem for this bitch.

Nell kept her eyes glued to Jane, and there was no instincts telling her to run. She wasn’t about to leave Josh with Jane, and she knew the woman wouldn’t let her off so easily. And besides, she’d still have to see Jane again. That terrified her. Next time you come across her alone… Shut. Up. Still, she knew that Jane didn’t like her at all, and as with anyone who you already hate, the littlest thing the girl even did ticked her aunt off. And she was clearly not above violence, and hopefully Josh understood that and would run away. She didn’t want to think about what Jane could do to him, because it was clear that Jane was not too keen on him at the moment. Even though her demeanor was completely relaxed and calm, Nell had seen enough of her hate and anger to understand how it manifested. ”Maybe your anger has just blinded you,” Jane responded coolly, brushing off his words even though Josh was very right. If he hadn’t come along, Nell honestly believed she’d have sustained some serious injury. And she was grateful to Josh for that, but she was more concerned about his safety now that Jane had turned her attention—and aggression—to him.
The woman was not that happy that Josh wasn’t backing down. But her smile never left her face, though it was now more of a confident smirk. And Nell felt like a doormat, glued to her car as she was. Nothing she said would make Jane leave, she knew that. In fact, Josh was provoking her almost as easily as she had. Jane wasn’t necessarily temperamental, but when something got in the way of what she wanted, that was when shit hit the fan. ”There seems to be a stalemate then!” she said, her tone rather histrionic and slightly scathing. Josh. Run. Now. Jane wasn’t attacking now—since she wasn’t very temperamental, she liked to draw things out, a cat with its toy. Her patience was even more limited with Nell, however. She didn’t even know Josh—the Earth girl wondered whether that was a good or bad thing. The next words made the woman laugh, even though they were stern and would have been intimidating had they been spoken to someone other than the psychopath that was Jane. ”I don’t think you have any authority to command me in what I do with my niece,” she said when he told her to leave. It was clear that was something far from her mind. As if completely shocked by the revelation, the woman said, ”Oh dear, I forgot to introduce myself? Jane Sinclair. I’m Nelly’s aunt, as I’ve stated. It’s a pleasure.” Nell wanted to deny any relation to the woman—she’d changed her name, after all, and not only because she wanted to get the law off her back. She didn’t want any connections with the Sinclairs or Fuentes’. But here was one connection about to assault a connection Nell would very much like to keep. Even though he’d been acting suspicious and even though he had been avoiding her—she didn’t want to lose Josh.
Jane lifted a dark eyebrow at his words, appearing amused. And she very much was, so confident in her abilities. ”Yes, I believe I can get the better of you,” she said, like she was casually entertaining an observation. Looking around, she went on, ”However, I see no one else at the moment. A shame, no?” Nell watched the orb Jane seemed to balance in her palm, realizing that she could do a lot of things with that. She was a dear in the headlights, watching what was about to happen and not being able to move to stop or avoid it. ”Pardon my French if you will, but you’re shit out of luck. As I said, I will not have you poking around where you do not belong.” With just a flick of her fingers, the orb shot out like a high-pressured hose aimed for Josh. Panicking, Nell tried frantically to reason with her aunt. ”Jane, you do this and you’ll call the attention of the Academy. Do you want that? You can’t slip away easily after injuring a student.” Her eyes were as cold as the ice she had tried to use against Nell before when she looked at the Earth girl, her fingers poised as if ready to ake another attack. But she knew that Jane didn’t want the Academy on her back, along with all the people who most likely already were. ”Yes, you would know about slipping away, wouldn’t you?” Nell bristled, half of her mind wanting to reply to Jane with a snarky comment, the other half ready to tear out of its skin as she worried about Josh’s well-being. Turning her attention back to Josh, the woman’s expression somehow more controlled when regarding him, she said, ”It is not in my wishes to greviously injure an Academy student, no matter how reckless and idiotic you are. I cannot enjoy a fight that’s already won.” Her eyes were back on Nell. ”You will come with me?” Jane phrased it as a question, but it was more of a statement. ”I am not going anywhere with you,” Nell said coldly. ”If you don’t want to fight, leave.”
Jane clucked her tongue, and shook her head. ”Just like your father, stubborn as a…what’s the word for it in your heathen language? Burro?” Nell rolled her eyes. Now she was just being immature. ”Well then, I should think I’ll be talking to you soon. Goodbye, Nelly and dear Fire boy.” Jane walked away while waggling her fingers, and Nell continued to watch until she reached her car—a rented Cadillac, of course, the poster car of the mob—to make sure she didn’t turn around and try to attack again. Nell looked at Josh, her voice breathy as she said, ”I am so sorry, Josh, she—“ The girl shook her head, running shaking fingers through her hair. She’s a psychopath, a bitch, the bane of her existence. ”Are you all right? She didn’t get you too bad did she?” Nell was already fussing over Josh, not touching him but waving her hands in the space around him as if she could magically heal him. ”I guess she realized hurting you wouldn’t get her anywhere. It’s lucky she’s not extremely temperamental or anything. She just—“ Nell stopped then, realizing something she should have been aware of sooner. Jane could get her again. It wasn’t over, for sure, and that was scary. Papa better not tell her where I live, or I swear… She shook off the thought, and looked at her boyfriend with imploring eyes. ”I…uh, I understand if you don’t want to come over anymore.” And she meant forever, because her aunt was a crazy bitch. If Josh had enough by now, then she would understand. No one should have to deal with a woman like Jane.

Joshua knew that this wasn't going to end well. Even though his rage was blinding him--though not in the way the Water elemental had suggested--he still had common sense. A college sophomore against a fully trained elemental was never a good idea unless the full-fledged individual was absolutely shit with their powers. Something about this woman told Josh that she was anything but terrible. The fact that she was Nell's aunt did nothing but make Joshua loathe her even more. Nell had told him things about her horrible family and as far as he was concerned they could all burn in hell and the world would be better off for it. His gray eyes narrowed when she introduced herself. Sinclair? For some reason it stirred a distant bell in the back of his mind but he had neither the time nor the concentration to mull over that now. All he could think about was the fact that he'd backed himself into a corner and yet he still possessed the strong urge to wrap his hands around Jane's throat and throttle her. You'd have hurt Nell if I hadn't stepped in, I know you would have. Of course, he didn't really know for sure, he just had a feeling. Gut feelings were something he usually trusted. Her family were not comprised of good people; why not assume her aunt was capable of serious harm? "I don't care who you are," he said in a voice that was trembling with a mixture of rage and forced control. Nell, why don't you run or something? he thought desperately. If she got out of the way then maybe he could at least escape the fight without serious injury and they would both be alright. He was concerned about how far this Jane woman was going to go.
And she was right about one thing--there was no one else around except a student or two, no one that would be of any real help in a fight. It would take a couple of college students to tackle someone with fully-developed powers and it wasn't like Josh was popular enough to have anyone step to his defence even if there had been people around. "I am not poking--" He stopped short in alarm when she attacked him, clearly not having expected it. There wasn't much he could do being so unprepared--he brought up a hand and an impressive wall of fire burst between them like a flaming shield, but it could only do so much. It perhaps stopped the worst of the damage but it neither stopped the pain nor the weakness that swept through him in the next moment. "Shit," he cursed under his breath, cringing despite himself. He didn't like to show weakness but damn. The only time he'd ever suffered a hit from an actual Water elemental was when a professor had attacked him to break up a fight, but she'd been going easy on him since they didn't make a habit of injuring their students. Plus, Josh had countered the water with a blast meant to turn it to steam (which had only been a mild success on the tail end) which had caused sufficient drain as well. He wasn't staggering or falling unconscious, but it was the most drain he'd suffered in a while.
It was Nell that came to his rescue, surprisingly, and though it made him bitter to rely on anyone else for help it was nevertheless a relief. "Oh, fuck you," he spat under his breath when Jane next spoke. He knew that she was most likely laying off because she didn't want any sort of trouble, not because she didn't want to hurt him. He had half a mind to attack her when she was leaving--his rage speaking, of course--but thankfully managed to convince himself that this would have been a terrible idea. Soaked and trembling from a combination of weakness, anxiety and leftover rage, Joshua gave Nell an incredulous look. "What are you apologising for?" he demanded, more roughly then he'd intended. Wincing, he said in a softer tone, "That--" He couldn't think of a word strong enough to describe his passionate hatred for Jane, a woman whom he'd just became acquainted with all of about five minutes prior. "That foul woman is the one who's to blame, not you." He gave her an apologetic look. "Sorry for snapping at you like that." He didn't want to take his anger out on Nell, he just couldn't help the things that set off his temper when he was running on such a non-existent fuse.
"I'm fine."
The response was practically automatic by now, though he was clearly not 'fine' by the way he was breathing hard and shuddering. God, he hated Jane. Perhaps quite as much as Nell did, because Joshua was not a loving person and it didn't take much to get on his bad side. His brows pulled together as if regarding Nell as she fussed over him and his lips twitched. He might have actually smiled if he wasn't so fucking enraged right now. "Relax," he said in a placating tone. "It could have been worse." She could have really hurt you. He was not thinking so much about himself and his own weakness right now as he was about Nell and how worried about her he felt. He fixed Nell with a stern look when she spoke. "Oh, Nell," he sighed, shaking his head. "Will you ever learn?" This time he almost did smile, though it was rather quick and it looked more of a grimace than a cheerful gesture. "Nothing's going to scare me off." Except for the fact that I got kicked out and have been avoiding you for two weeks prior to this. He figured it was in both of their better interests not to add this part out loud, so he kept the thought to himself. A wave of his hand caused a blast of heat to sweep the area, though he was careful to direct it away from Nell. He screwed up his expression as he felt the drain, along with a dizzy and slightly nauseous feeling. Know your limit, he reminded himself. At least he wasn't soaked any more, though still shaking. "Uh, shall we go to your apartment, then?" It felt weird carrying on as they were after that confrontation, but what else could they do?

Nell drew back, pulling her hands away from the air around him when Josh was short with her. Why was she apologizing? Because she was related to Jane, and it was her fault that the woman had attacked him, and it was her fault she was even here in the first place. True, she didn’t tell Jane to come and she didn’t tell her to go after Josh, but it felt like she had played a big part in it. ”I’m s—“ She was certainly about to apologize for apologizing, and not only would that be annoying, it would be redundant. He went on, and she further corrected herself. ”And I’m the reason she’s even here,” Nell said, her voice carrying the bitterness she felt. ”That’s something to be apologetic for.” She guesed it’s true that you can’t escape your past no matter where you go. She should have thought the moment her father showed up, that it would get much worse from there. Nell hadn’t taken Jane in consideration. But she should have, since it was clear the woman was hell-bent on ruining her life. ”It’s all right,” she said softly. His anger wasn’t what she was the most concerned about—it was his health and the fact that Jane is getting way out of hand.
Her thoughts weren’t on how weak Josh was at that moment—of course he was more susciptable to Jane, she was a graduated Water elemental. Right now she was only wondering how true his words were, and deciding that—as usual—they were not true at all. ”If you’re really hurt…” She stopped, shaking her head. His pride wouldn’t allow him to ne hurt, she understood that. Nothing will scare him off? There should have been a bitter response, something along the lines of, “Well, that’s hard to believe when I’ve seemed to scare you off for weeks.” But she didn’t feel any bitterness. Only anxiety. And she could only imagine how Josh felt after experiencing first-hand how Jane could get. The attack was more-or-less a threat. At least she was capable of mercy. It wasn’t mercy, it was guile. Jane knew it wasn’t worth fighting Josh to get to Nell. The two would be seeing each other again, after all, she had been right about that. And Josh may not be around then. And she wouldn’t tell her father because she didn’t want him to know anything. Nell kept her mouth shut, but gave him a pointed look that spoke everything she was thinking. Then what’s up with you? ”Well, I’m glad,” she said non-commitedly. She trusted Josh, but right now she was too stressed out and worried about everything he was doing lately that she didn’t know what to think at the moment. All she knew was that she was truly scared.
Nell waited as he dried himself off, and it seemed her was still on edge. Should she ask him to go to the medical wing? No, he wouldn’t listen to her, she knew that much. In any case, he said that he still wanted to come over, which shocked her. He’d been avoiding her for weeks, and the first time he talked to her, Jane came out to attack him. That should give him more incentive to keep avoiding her. And most likely break up with her. Nell’s thoughts left Jane and her impending doom for a moment to once again wonder what she had done wrong. ”Yeah, yeah,” she said, a bit breathless. Nell didn’t really know what to say during the car ride, and it amazed her how many awkward phases they managed to go through. At her apartment, though, she peaked inside before walking in. ”Sorry if it’s a mess, I don’t know if Pablo managed to get into anything.” She tossed her bag on the half-table against the wall, scanning her apartment. Everything was in place, though she wondered if it looked disorganized thanks to all her plants, especially the spider ivy and Pothos. Nell looked at Josh before going to the kitchen. ”Do you want anything?” God knows she always had food. Plus, she didn’t know what else to say. She wasn’t going to pounce on Josh for answers.

Despite what they had just gone through, it hadn't done much to patch up the guilt that Joshua was feeling--in fact, it only added to it. Now he felt bad for snapping at her, for not doing more to help out with her aunt, for everything, really. He sensed the lack of commitment in her tone when she said that she was glad and a flicker of doubt passed through his gray gaze. What was going to happen if his excuses weren't good enough for her? What would Nell do when she found out the reason that he had been dancing around and avoiding her lately was not one with which she was satisfied. Anxiety started to flood his gut, filling all of the cracks and crevices that the guilt had not managed to penetrate. Coupled with his weakness from the attack, Joshua was left feeling rather ill. He didn't think that he would be sick for it was not that kind of nausea, but it was still a less than pleasant feeling. All he wanted to do was shut down and not have to deal with all this, push it out of his mind and ignore it childishly. But he was an adult, not a child, so he couldn't have what he wanted. "Come on," he sighed at last, gesturing over to the vehicle which he had abandoned to come over and explore the situation. He almost wished for a moment that he'd stayed where he was, then reminded himself that the alternative was Nell getting hurt and immediately stopped regretting it. He was just as at a loss for words as she was during the car ride, so he kept his gaze fixed on the road and his lips pressed together in uncomfortable silence. It felt just like it had in the beginning of their awkward companionship, only worse. He wanted to say something to at least reassure her but he couldn't find the words.
Josh didn't know whether to feel better or worse when he finally pulled into the parking lot where her apartment was located. He would not be able to put off his explanations for much longer and so it was mostly dread he was feeling as he allowed Nell to take the lead (seeing as she had the key and all). It felt almost like he was being led to some sort of a prison sentence. Stop being over dramatic, he scolded himself, but he couldn't help it. "It's okay," he shrugged when she apologised in advance for any sort of mess. He had been inside of Nell's apartment before and even if she didn't religiously scrub floors and counter tops until they shined, it wasn't like he was dating a slob. That is, if I'll even be dating her for much longer. He had been trying not to think of the negative affects this conversation may or may not have on their relationship for the past little while, ever since she'd confronted him in fact. He'd hoped at first that the run-in with Jane might have strengthened and repaired the parts where two weeks unexplained separation had done damage, but right now it was feeling like nothing had changed. "I'm--" he started, and he was about to say that he was fine and that he didn't want to be a bother, but then Joshua reminded himself that he hadn't eaten in a while and that food would restore some of the strength that Jane had taken from him. With great difficulty shown by the way his expression contorted for a moment, he forced himself to suck up some of his pride and said, "I--sure." He couldn't meet her gaze, hating the way that he had to give in like this.
After food had gotten out of the way he could avoid everything no longer. He certainly tried to cast around in his brain for some sort of excuse, but there was nothing to be had. Sitting down, Joshua wrung his hands together and averted his eyes from hers, sighing and seeming like an invisible weight was pressing down on him. He almost seemed to deflate as he let out the breath, then looked at his girlfriend and said simply, "My father kicked me out." It was all he could manage without explaining the reasons themselves. He didn't want her to feel guilty and he didn't have any idea of how he could lie to explain it away, so Josh just hoped that she wouldn't ask. She deserved an answer, however, and so he wouldn't be surprised if she did press him for details. He'd always done his best to be honest with her and he'd once told her that she could ask him anything and he would do his best to respond with honesty. He regretted that now. He didn't want to admit any of this but it was the entire reason that he'd been avoiding her lately. It wasn't a good enough reason on its own; he wanted to insist to himself that it was perfectly logical to avoid your girlfriend if your parents had chucked you out of the house, but he knew himself that it was actually quite the opposite. If she'd had nothing to do with it she usually would have been one of the first people he'd confided in. After a lengthy pause, he simply said, "Sorry." He felt again like he wasn't apologizing enough for this, like he wasn't telling her enough for it to be a perfectly plausible reason. He couldn't help that, though. What else could he say?
