Joshua woke rather early that morning to a sharp rap on the door. Yawning, the teenager cracked his eyes open to see his father frowning at him. "What?" Joshua asked as if offended, glancing to the windows along his wall to see that it was not yet light. "The hell, Dad?" he asked, though he was already getting out of bed and heading over to the mirror to see what sort of a state his hair was in. "It's not even light yet, it's summer, what are you--" He cut himself off as he caught sight of the date flashing in the corner of the alarm clock on his dresser. "Oh," he said as it dawned on him. "Shit, yeah, I'll get ready." He did not look back to see if his father had heard, but after a moment the man replied, "Wake Nell, too, would you?" and there were footsteps retreating down the hall. His girlfriend had stayed overnight for convenience and as far as Joshua knew her bags were packed and ready to go. He didn't really know what she was like this early in the morning--the last time they'd ran into one another at this time, she'd bitten his head off and accused him of cheating. After taking a shower and pulling on some clean clothes it was with slight trepidation that he headed into the maze of halls and started toward the room which he knew Nell was sleeping in. He hadn't even reached the door when his mother called sharply from downstairs, "Joshua! Get down here, I need your help with something!"
He winced a little at her sharp tone, well aware of the fact that Patricia was not a morning person. Even still, he went downstairs to see what she wanted, giving her an inquiring look as she fiddled with the zipper on a large suitcase. "Can't get the damned thing to close," she muttered vehemently. Joshua obligingly helped to compress everything further so that the thing finally closed. She hissed in frustration and pain and Josh could see that her fingers were red from the effort. "Why are we leaving so early, anyway?" he asked innocently enough, though that didn't stop her from glaring daggers at him. "Your father thinks we should get a head start on driving," she snapped as if she vehemently disagreed with this. "Nearly tripped over the luggage on my way down the stairs--" Noting that her anger was reaching its peak and deciding to make a quick escape, he said, "Yeah that's great, Mum, listen--I've got to go and get Nell..." He had vanished back up the stairs before she could find another reason to yell. His mother didn't do well in times like these. He passed his sister on the second floor, looking quite out of it as she stumbled down the hall. "Hi," she said, sleepy and unenthusiastic. He returned the quick greeting and then took the final set of stairs two at a time until he'd reached the third floor.
He wasn't entirely sure how to go about waking Nell, now that he thought about it. Deciding to just start with a basic attempt and be more persistent if it took a while, he wandered over to the bed and nudged her slightly. "Hey, Nell," he said experimentally. "Nell, are you up?" He wasn't going to do what his father sometimes did and blind her with the light--no, that was a brutal tactic that he wasn't going to torture Nell with. Being blinded within the first few seconds of waking was never nice. He sat down on the end of the bed and smiled lazily at her. Unlike a lot of the people in his household, Joshua was neither a morning or a night person. His schedule was usually erratic due to a lot of studying during the school year and sleeping at odd times of the day. He was used to this. Trish was not. Donovan was thanks to his years as a doctor when he was on call. "We have to leave soon." He figured they could grab something to eat at a roadside diner or something or at least get something like coffee from Tim Hortons for Patricia so that she didn't spend the entire day sniping everyone. His mother was usually the nice parent but mornings brought out the worst in her.

the sky be so big * that it broke my soul & i stand on my toes to catch a glimpse Cards were probably Nell’s favorite thing to do, so no wonder she dreamt about them. Currently, she was playing with Abraham Lincoln, Batman, and Kanye West. Or at least, she was dreaming that she was playing with the three. The game had been going on for quite a while, and she was happy to say that she was winning. That is, untill she was interrupted. Unaware that she had been prodded awake, Nell shifted away on the bed and mumbled, ”Oye, I told you to go fish, Kanye.” Josh’s second attempt brought her into full consciousness and she blinked a few times before shifting into a sitting position, rubbing at her eyes with the back of her hands. She didn’t remember what she had just said to Joshua, and she now had a foggy idea of what she’d been previously dreaming. ”Now I’m up,”she responded groggily to Josh. Dropping her hands into her lap and taking a second to look around, she wondered where the hell she was. The room wasn’t very familiar, until she took into the fact that Josh was there smiling at her and she remembered that she’d stayed over the night before. ”Oh,” she said, figuring it out, a smile claiming her features. Nell was always in a good mood when she woke up. In her mind, when the day begins there’s nothing to be unhappy about yet. It didn’t make sense to be in a bad mood when you first return to consciousness. And so she met the morning with a smile. ”Hey Josh,” she said languidly, still dreary. Instead of being completely out of it, she was more in an…inebriated state.
She wasn’t too adverse to the idea of Josh seeing her in all her bedheaded glory. It wasn’t like she was incredibly high maitenence and the idea of her boyfriend seeing her with disheveled pajamas and hair was the end of the world. He’d seen her in worse states, anyway. ”What time is it?” she asked, noticing that there wasn’t any sunlight shining through the blinds. Then she looked toward the clock and laughed. ”Wow, you really want to get a start on the day, huh?” Nell didn’t mind waking up so early—she had wacky hours, especially during the summer. Her biological clock must have hated her for what she put it through. ”All right, I just need a few minutes to get ready,” she said through a yawn as she stretched, still in the process of getting up. Soon, anticipation for the day would take over and get her moving. She really was excited for the trip, after all, but right now she was getting herself going. It wouldn’t take too long before she was fully awake and bouncing around.
Nell flitted to the bathroom to change, and within the minutes that it took for her to get ready she fell into her normal state of being. ”I’m ready,” she sing-songed when she re-entered the room. She was about ready to break intoa rendition of Good Morning Starshine, but withheld for Josh’s sake. ”Is there anything we have to do before we go?” she asked as she looked through the duffel bag she’d just bought to make sure she had everything she needed. This was her first experience with an actual vacation, so she didn’t really know what to expect and was just taking Josh’s lead on what to do to be prepared.

Joshua blinked when Nell mumbled in her sleep, so surprised by this that it was several seconds before he had any sort of reaction. Then he smirked and chuckled a little. It was almost adorable to think that she talked in her sleep. However, he was more curious about what the hell she was talking about. Kanye who? he wondered, and though his mind immediately jumped to the famous West he decided that this couldn't be. Why the hell would Nell be dreaming about Kanye West and... fish? Oh, he didn't know. At any rate, Nell was now stirring and he quickly assumed a normal expression so that she didn't know he'd heard anything. He supposed this could be considered embarrassing to a lot of people and he didn't want to make her uncomfortable. He knew that he'd feel rather self-conscious if he talked in his sleep. Do I? Another thing that he could not answer that morning. No one had ever told him that he did and he was a very light sleeper regardless, so perhaps it wasn't possible. Or maybe he did and people avoided telling him, just as he was not mentioning it to Nell. Oh, dear. He didn't like that idea. Pushing it away, his gray eyes twinkled as Nell responded rather groggily to his words. "Good morning," he said, half cheerful and half teasing. She didn't seem too grumpy at least--just disoriented. "Hello," he replied, sounding deeply amused about something. For some reason this entire situation was rather comical to him. He was enjoying it nonetheless, however. Maybe Nell would need some coffee too, this morning. How long would it take her to wake up, he wondered?
He laughed a bit when she asked him what time it was, for she was clearly as confused about the lack of daylight as he had been. "Too early," he responded, and he was about to reply with a more serious answer when Nell glanced at the clock and found out for herself. He snorted a bit at her words. "My father did," he corrected. "Mum's not too happy about it, so be careful if you run into her." Nell had caught a glimpse of Patricia's morning mood once before but Joshua still figured it would be a good idea to warn her just in case. Trish usually saved her bad moods for her family (her bad moods were usually because of her family) but he doubted she'd have as much discretion today. She looked ready to strangle Donovan when Josh had helped her with the suitcase so he was even worried that Nell would be under threat from her. "Alright," he said pleasantly enough when she said that she'd need some time to get ready. "I'll wait here." He'd rather spend the last bit of time in the house up here waiting for Nell as opposed to downstairs with Patricia, trying to avoid being annihilated or pressing the wrong buttons. She was as unpredictable as he was at this hour. He wondered if she was making coffee or if she just planned to grab something on the road. Maybe the latter, if Donovan was in such a hurry as it seemed. It was with these thoughts that Nell left Josh when she disappeared into the bathroom, and he was still mulling over them when she emerged.
Her change in disposition was the second surprise of that morning. It seemed that, like Joshua himself, Nell was rather quick to wake as soon as she'd been given a moment. He gave her a bright smile as she practically sang out the words, then shook his head at her question. "I don't think so," he replied. "We could grab a quick breakfast here--I'm sure my mother wouldn't object, even if my father's in a hurry--or we could just opt to eat on the road." He was leaving it up to Nell seeing as he didn't care either way. He also didn't really give a damn about his father's opinion on the matter because he was thinking about Nell right now, not Donovan. If Nell wanted to eat breakfast when they weren't en-route then Josh would be all for it. If she didn't then he'd still be all for it. At least they wouldn't be crammed uncomfortably into a car--apart from their showy sports cars, the Dales owned a large family van used for vacations and family outings. It was sleek and black and likely had Donovan's luggage loaded into it already. They had a lot of stuff to bring--there were five people going, after all--but seeing as the back row of seats could be compacted to save space, they didn't have anything to worry about. With a lazy smile, Joshua crossed the room and kissed her before saying, "So, what would you rather do? I'm game for anything, it's your choice."

the sky be so big * that it broke my soul & i stand on my toes to catch a glimpse Nell noticed that Josh was particularly chipper this morning, something she wouldn’t have expected from Josh. She figured someone who normally had quite the usual stoic attitude would be especially unfriendly so early in the day. It was a pleasant surprise. And on the subject of the early hour, she merely smiled, already putting her hair up in a ponytail with a band she kept around her wrist. ”Ah well, wacky hours are my specialty,” she said. Her occupation was perfect preperation, she supposed. In any case, she didn’t mind at all that Josh had woken her up so early. She tilted her head. ”I’ll make sure to be careful,” she commented when Josh mentioned Trish and her morning attitude. She remembered the last time she’d seen his mother early in the morning, after their terrible fight. Nell didn’t want to give her any reason to be mad at her again.
The subject of food would do well to pick Nell up even if she had been surly this morning. Josh let her have the choice, and it was a lot of pressure, having to make such an impertinent decision. ”I don’t think it’s good for me to be making choices this early in the morning, I may pick something I’ll regret,” she said, though she was pretty competent right now. Her body had learned to function at odd hours, and she supposed the mental aspect played into that. Pulling away from the kiss, she said, ”How about I just grab something here and eat it on the way, so that we don’t have to stop too much on the road.” Of course, there’d be potty breaks and everything, but she’d rather not have her appetite make them stop constantly along the way. Which brought up a question that hadn’t really thought of until just now. ”How long is it going to take, by the way?” She’d never been to the maritimes or on a road trip, so she had no idea how much time would be spent on the road getting there. Still, she was excited to get going. Nell’s inner car fanatic and clausrtophobia were battling it out to decide whether or not she would enjoy the trip. If anything, she’d be bouncing in her seat so much it would be more reasonable for her to get out and run there instead of taking the car.
Nell took her bag and cheerfully called out, ”¡Vamanos!” as she headed down the stairs to get something to eat for the road. She figured Josh would know what that meant—she’d been watching Dora the Explorer as of late, and it was a word she often used. Besides, it was easy to tell that it expressed urgency. She didn’t think too much into it as she rummaged through the kitchen to look for food. Even though they were rich, she still made sure not to eat too much. Then it would definitely feel like she was an imposition on them. ”Okay, ready to go,” she said, deciding on Poptarts. ”We should get on the road before the sun rears its ugly head.” Nell rolled her eyes and laughed. Thinking about it, it was probably good to get out on the road early—avoids traffic and they’d have more time in the day when they finally reached their destination.

Joshua nodded at Nell's suggestion, deciding that it sounded like a pretty good idea. He was hungry as well and so he decided that he would also scrounge up some snacks if he could. He didn't really care if Donovan complained to the two about holding them up because it seemed that his father had gotten up and had something to eat already whereas the rest of the family had been forcibly roused. "Sounds like a plan," he agreed. As he'd said, he was down for whatever she felt like doing. "Though I'm sure we'll be able to make stops on occasion." He said this with a touch of uncertainty, frowning as he realised that most of the vacations he'd been on thus far had not been road trips but simple flights to wherever they wanted to go. Who had wanted the road trip experience this time around? Josh couldn't remember but he didn't suppose that it mattered either way. The point was they were going and that was that. He knew that they had Patricia and Annabel on their side if they did want to take a break at the little roadside pit stops that usually had some sort of diner or at least a Tim Hortons as well as a gas pump and washroom facilities. Donovan would likely complain the entire time but that was alright. Josh could handle his father when they were not alone together--when he had Trish to help him it was much easier to win an argument. She was a very confident and outspoken woman, determined that she would have her way over her husbands a great deal of the time. "I'm pretty sure we've also got a cooler with drinks and probably sandwiches or something packed, just in case."
Then Nell proposed a very important question and Joshua hesitated, unsure of how to answer. He really didn't know how long it was going to take them and he figured this was the sort of thing that he should have asked of his parents and informed Nell about before she'd even agreed to go, let alone right before they were about to leave. He shifted a little guiltily before admitting, "I'm not really sure. A few days, maybe more?" Not wanting to sound too much like he had skipped out on giving her the details or that he was an idiot with no sense of recollection, he admitted, "I've not been on many road trips." It was mostly planes, for him, and he hoped Nell understood that. It was actually a good thing they did not have to get on a plane for this flight seeing as Nell was here illegally and that would turn out very badly for her indeed. No, this way was much safer. He'd freely sacrifice the comfort of first class flights for the company of his girlfriend. "Don't worry, though," he added in what he hoped was a reassuring tone. "We're not going to be driving straight there; we'll make stops at night and such." With all of their money it would practically be blasphemous to consider sleeping in the car. No, there would definitely be hotel stops. Perhaps not the most extravagant locations (after all, they would need to make do with whatever was in reach) but he had strong feelings that Donovan would never settle for a ratty and cheap roadside inn. They would be at least moderately comfortable.
He chuckled and rolled his eyes slightly when Nell grabbed her bag and rushed off. He followed more slowly, but though they went in the same direction he neglected the stairs which she took and instead went around through the library to get to his room. It always seemed very dark at night thanks to the deep cherry wood of the walls and flooring but he knew his way around enough that he didn't need light to find where he'd rested his bags. Hoisting one of them on his shoulder, he took the others in his free hand and followed Nell downstairs. Just as she was exiting the kitchen with a box of what looked like Pop Tarts, Joshua entered with an entertained chuckle. "It's not a race, Nell," he said languidly, waving a hand. He dropped the heaviest of the bags (the one on his shoulder) onto the kitchen island, earning him a sharp glare from his mother which was easily ignored. He went into the fridge and started taking random snacks out that he thought might be of use to them, having none of the shame or caution that Nell had possessed. He was just adding a large bag of Goldfish to his selection when Patricia cleared her throat to gain attention. He gave her a questioning look. "And just how do you expect you're going to carry all of that?" she asked dryly. Her mood seemed to have relaxed slightly thanks to the cup of coffee she was drinking, but not quite. "Good point," he frowned. If she hoped that he was going to be putting it back, however... "I'll use this." He held up a paper bag that had probably once been used for groceries and stuffed everything inside before handling his luggage once more. It was quite heavy. "Right, now I'm ready," he said with a grin in Nell's direction.
It was just as well, too, seeing as Donovan entered the kitchen at that moment with a short, "Are you three done lingering? Annabel's already out in the car--" Josh looked at him. "Relax, Dad, we're not on a deadline." This was apparently the wrong thing to say, however, for Donovan narrowed his eyes at him. "What about the hotel? I have had it booked for weeks and it is most certainly not cheap, if you would have us showing up late and wasting my money--" Trish, thankfully, seemed to be in enough of a good mood to keep the peace. She set the coffee mug down and rested a hand on her husband's arm with a sharp, "With your rush we'll be there early. Stop biting everyone's heads off and help me get some of this out to the car." When neither of his parents were looking Joshua shot a grin at Nell and mouthed, "Crisis averted." He gestured for her to follow and went out the front door and around to the garage, not wanting to be stuck trying to get through the smaller door that led into the house. He slid his bags into the trunk and then stepped aside so Nell could stick hers in as well. "I wanted to take Harper," he said, casting a longing look toward the almost predatory sports car in the shadows of the garage. "My father wouldn't let me. Something about attracting attention and potential robbery." He sighed, then shrugged and wore a smile--he was determined not to be Dan the Downer on this trip. "Oh well."
After seating arrangements had been worked out and the hell of working out how to fit all of the luggage into the car had been dealt with, Joshua climbed into the van and took a moment to recover from how strange it was to be in the back seat. He was used to the driver's side of his Aventador. However, it wasn't like he'd never been a passenger before (just not in a while) so he recovered quickly and took out the Goldfish as they pulled out of the driveway and onto the road that would lead them out of town. "Want some?" he asked, offering them in general to both the girls in the backseat as Trish and Donovan discussed the hotel arrangements and wondered if the housing staff (who'd been commissioned to caretake and watch the animals while they were gone) would do their job properly. Soon enough they were driving through a road that wound through the mountains with nothing on either side but the landscape. He could see the appeal of the Hollow from an outsider's point of view, he supposed. It was so secluded and private that it was a good place to be away from everything else. Eventually Donovan and Patricia joined the overall conversation as soon as they'd stopped fretting about the staff (the butler called Patricia on her cellphone to reassure her that things would be taken care of) and the hours until the night passed quickly.
The boat trip was rather stressful for Joshua ("I forgot about this bit--do we have to?") but he found that as long as he stayed away from the deck and the windows that he was alright. He didn't get motion sickness or sea sickness and the ferry didn't really have much movement either. There were several places to get food as well as an area for the passengers to watch movies and he tried his best to convince himself that they were still online. It didn't help that one of the movies they were showing was the Titanic. Blanching, it was at that moment that he muttered something about being hungry and went to take advantage of the triple fudge sundaes he'd seen for sale. When they finally hit Newfoundland, he was relieved and even laughed a little at himself for being so nervous. "You two can go and have fun," Patricia said with a smile, freeing them from any need to stick with the group. "Annabel wants to see the coast and your father is hungry--" She shot her husband an 'I told you that you should have ate when you had the chance' look, "and we thought we'd take a look at the restaurants in the area. I heard there was a buffet, but I think we'll go for something a little more quaint." And they were off. Joshua wrung his hands slightly and adjusted his jacket. It was warm thanks to being midsummer, but since Newfoundland was out at sea it might get cold or rainy and he wasn't taking chances. "I told you I'd take you to a buffet if we got the chance, eh?" However, he'd heard something about a good bookstore near the coast and he was itching to check it out. "There were a few places I was hoping to check out, though..."

the sky be so big * that it broke my soul & i stand on my toes to catch a glimpse Nell nodded, not minding that he didn’t have the exact length of time. She understood that it would be a long trip, she just wasn’t sure how long it would be. And she was not at all put off by the time it would take for them to get there. It was all about the journey, after all. ”I’ve haven’t been on any,” she said as if to placate him and the apparent guilt he felt about not being able to give her a straight answer. ”Not counting coming to Canada.” Since he knew all about her alien status, it seemed okay for her to joke about that at least. It was true, she had hitchiked up north, like some kind of underground railroad for murderers. ”Staying in hotels, then?” That was also something she knew about with her trip north. It was sleazy motels and ditching before she was forced to pay with money she didn’t have. But she wasn’t going to think about ll the fear and panic she experienced during that time. This was a vacation, not an escape from the law.
Josh took his good old time with getting his butt downstairs, unhurried as he went about retrieving his bags. Which she guessed was what he'd been doing when he finally came into the kitchen with them. Nell turned to stick her tongue out at Josh before saying, ”But if it was…I won.” Her body was feeding off her anticipation, but thinking of feeding, she tore open the poptarts and began eating as she waited for Josh sense he seemed to be taking the morning slowly. Nell tried her best not to laugh as she listened to the conversation between him and Trish over the amount of food he’d collected. Nell gave Josh the thumbs up signal and after swallowing a piece of Poptart, she joked, ”Took you long enough.” But she felt slight concern when Donovan appeared to be cross with them. Normal family conversations such as this were something she never had experience with, made more awkward by the fact that this wasn’t her family and she had the sort of outsider feeling. Strangely enough, it was the snippy Trish that calmed the storm before it even hit and she grinned over at Josh. It was strange, looking at the way this family functioned, its overall dynamic. Is this what normal families were like? Well, as close to normal as the world ever got. Loading the car, she blinked up at Josh when he spoke and said, ”It’s probably for the best. Don’t want anything to happen to her.” Wasn’t that the truth. It’d be quite devastating if the Aventador was stolen or totaled or any other horrific event she didn’t want to imagine.
For the trip on the road, she stayed mainly focused on looking at the window since she would be seeing things she’d never laid eyes on before. Even being stuck in a car was exhilerating because she was going places she’d never been before. There was something transcendental in the way she viewed travel, but the whole effect was lost as she ate Goldfish while paying a little bit of mind to the adults’ conversation in the front seat. It was a little odd that her first trip anywhere would be with another family, but it was her boyfriend’s family so it seemed a little less strange. Besides, she was looking forward to this too much to be too focused on any feeling of being an outsider—even though she was an Earth among Fires. And to add on to the new experiences, being on a boat was a new one for her, too. Now that she was aware of Josh’s debilitating phobia when it came to drowning, she stuck by him when she could even when she wanted to peer over into the water. She had no fear to keep her away from the railings, though she wasn’t a very good swimmer. At all. Nell still liked the open sea and all the water, and wondered if it was the Water element in her family talking. She sure hoped not.
It was strange being on land after that, and it was like a ghost feeling of rocking that made her a bit unsteady. At least she managed to avoid getting seasick. Trish informed the two that they had free reign, which was glorious to Nell. She wouldn’t have minded being with the family, but it was even better when she could be let off the leash of having a group that all wanted to do different things. Of course, she and Josh probably would like to do different things but compromise was a word in her vocabulary. He mentioned the buffet and she grinned. ”You did,” she agreed, trying not to let on just how excited about the idea of a buffet she actually was. The idea was something of a dream for someone like her. Josh said that there were some things that he wanted to check out, and she crossed her arms, a feigned expression of exasperation on her face. ”Food first,” she said, voice stern. Then, as if to justify her decision, she said, ”It is a necessity. We can save everything else for after we replenish ourselves.” Then, letting her façade slip, she smiled. ”Besides, I really want to see this whole buffet deal.”

His lips twitched into a smile when Nell made a joke about her illegal alien status, but internally he was wondering what that had really been like for her. How had she managed to get all the way from New York to British Columbia? It was fascinating to consider this and all but he didn't want to ask and possibly bring down the mood by reminding her about her run from the law in more detail. Instead he merely nodded when she asked about motels. "Don't worry, though," he said. "Dad's got standards. No Psycho roadsides for us." His gray eyes twinkled with a bit of humour as he said this. Though he wasn't as into movies as Nell was he had certainly seen some of the horror classics enough to know what he was talking about. No, he was sure that they wouldn't have their throats slit whilst they were sleeping. "He doesn't mind spending a little extra if it means comfort." Patricia, who'd come from a working class family that struggled a great deal of their life, was a different story. She would be against sleeping in a shitty inn but she'd also be the one to look for deals and cheaper ways to go about things. Joshua took after his father. It didn't matter how expensive it was--if it suited him, he wanted it. "Speaking of money," said Joshua with a slight start, "did you bring some of your own?" This was a vacation, after all, she would need something in terms of spending money. Of course, Joshua would be more than happy to cover her costs entirely if she asked but he knew by this time that his girlfriend had likely came prepared. She was as stubborn as he was when it came to independence. Sometimes this amused him, sometimes it exasperated him, but at very least he could understand it. He wasn't going to argue, he was just curious as to whether she'd remembered.
Joshua was grateful for the fact that Nell stuck by him all the time that they were on the boat. Annabel and Donovan certainly didn't have such discretion and though Trish kept a close eye on him as if she was worried that he might faint or something extreme, she didn't seem to understand the phobia enough to be sympathetic. Knowing that Nell didn't have the same fear as he did, Josh sometimes deliberately took 'bathroom breaks' and wandered to a different part of the ship alone in order to let Nell enjoy the boat trip and the decks as much as the others. He felt guilty as usual for her desire to stay with him, but he didn't have the confidence to tell her he was completely fine. He was selfish in the sense that he wanted the company and the closeness. It was probably a relief for them all when they finally stepped off of the boat and onto land. Fortunately for Nell, Joshua also knew of compromise and was accepting enough of the term that he dipped his head graciously as he gave in to her need to eat. "Alright," he said agreeably, "we can eat, first." After all, he was just going to enjoy this trip in its entirety no matter how many sacrifices he had to make in order to obey the desires of the group as a whole. He was sure that everyone would get their time to do their own thing or their pick of the activity and so he could exercise some patience and head to the buffet before he trolled around the bookstores and sunglasses huts and all those things that Joshua loved the most. "After we eat we could even go exploring," he mused. There were a lot of really neat areas to clamber and poke around on the island. He might have been serious and studious but he also had a sense of adventure. He'd grown up in the Hollow with mountains as his backyard--it would have been insane if he didn't.
With a relaxed and easy-going smile to show that he really did have no problem with letting Nell have her way, Joshua took her hand and started toward the main town. "There's probably a sign somewhere," he mused, having realised that Patricia hadn't really told them where the hell this buffet was supposedly going on. It was in the travel brochure but of course they'd left those with his parents. He probably should have thought to grab one before they went prancing off on their own but that was alright. They just had to hope they didn't get lost. With his free hand he patted the pocket of his jeans to make sure that he had his cellphone--he did, and worries about getting lost vanished. They wouldn't be separated as long as they had a means of contacting one another. "Could that be it?" He gestured to a building that had a sign out front advertising some sort of an all-you-can eat event. Grinning, he said, "Let's go check it out!" Sure enough, it was exactly the buffet that they were looking for. The smells of food both local and exotic assaulted the senses the moment you stepped inside the door and Joshua only paused to pay the admission price before excitedly wandering amongst the huge tables full of food. He might not have been as much of a voracious eater as Nell but the scents were reminding him that he was indeed hungry. It was always a real shame that he was vegetarian when it came to cuisine--there were a lot of local seafood dishes that would probably be delicious but didn't agree with his diet. Still, he wasn't complaining, piling up a plate with food and raising his brows at Nell. "Shall we find somewhere to sit, or do you want to grab another plate, first?" He was only teasing of course.

the sky be so big * that it broke my soul & i stand on my toes to catch a glimpse Her main conern hadn’t been about poor standards when it came to hotels. Actually, she didn’t have many concerns for this trip at all. Nell pouted at the mention of Psycho roadsides. ”A shame, I was looking forward to being stabbed by a dude in a dress.” She acquired an expression of horror then, and then laughed. She really wouldn’t mind having to stay in cheap motels, since there was the whole ‘been through worse’ mantra on repeat in her head. But as expected by the rich and wealthy, such things weren’t even to be considered. And speaking of being rich, she nodded at his question. ”Of course. I have to pay my own expenses after all.” She’d actually informed her father about the trip just so he would know that she wasn’t disappearing—which she felt intensely bitter about when it came to the irony. He left without warning before, why should she have to report to him when she wanted to do something? But she knew it was different. She had the law to worry about, he only had his crumbling family. Let’s not let this ruin the trip Nell.
Adventure sounded especially thrilling, and since she’d never come here before, everything was an adventure. ”Have you ever been here before?” she inquired. Josh had traveled before, she was sure, but she did have to wonder if he’d ever been here before. Of course, it was nothing truly exotic as somewhere abroad, but it was just as wonderous to her. It would also help had Josh been at least somewhat familiar with his surrounding, since her sense of direction wasn’t really something to brag about. She just called getting lost a journey to make herself feel better. Of course, the length she’d traveled to America was something to brag about, but it was kind of hard to miss a massive country perched atop your own. Nell stood on her tiptoes to peer over other people’s heads and see what Josh was talking about when it seemed he caught sight of something—unfortunately, she did not have his advantage of height. ”I can’t even see,” she said, somewhat pathetically. When she entered, though, it was quite clear what this place was—the paradiso that Dante wrote about. In other words, her first buffet. It was magnificent for her, but also rather overwhelming. It was like placing Josh in a giant library—she didn’t know where to start. And even though she had quite the appetite, she couldn’t let her eyes get too big for her stomach. Her body had limits, after all, and she was determined not to go too crazy.
But by the time she was finished, she’d managed to squeeze as much as she could onto her plate, placing more on like it was some kind of balancing act. Carefully dropping an onion ring onto the mountain of food, she rolled her eyes at Josh. ”Very funny.” Deciding that she shouldn’t risk piling any more food on, she made her way to a table while gingerly holding her plate so that nothing dropped to the floor. Finding a table, it was another thing to figure out where to start with her healthy serving of…everything. For a few moments, Nell sat with fork poised, staring down at the plate. ”’All you can eat’ is a dangerous phrase,” she mumbled as she poked around, and pulled out something she couldn’t even identify. There was a lot of food that she’d never even seen before, which got her a little more than excited, and she didn’t consider anything would be bad for her. ”…This is…okra?” she said as she inspected it. It was definitely some kind of vegetable, which she tended to like—anything healthy was good on her list. She shrugged and ate it, taking a moment before saying, ”Muy delicioso. It’s really good, did you get any?” Vegetables were on his list of things to eat, she was sure, so it was something they could share in that aspect. Moving on to everything else on her plate, she made sure to pace herself so she wouldn’t get a stomachache. However, that wasn’t what happened. Even still, that’s what happened. Not only did she feel a bit nauseous, but it felt like her throat was constricting. With a pained expression on her features, Nell set her fork down and said, ”Welll that’s not a nice feeling.” She leaned back in her chair slightly, but it didn’t help at all. In fact, she was feeling a bit faint. Which was scaring her, but she wasn’t about to let Josh in on that.

He gave an absent nod when Nell questioned him. "When I was much younger; more around Prince Edward Island than Newfoundland, but I'm sure we dropped by here as well." He was listening to her, but he was also glancing around and observing those others walking around the crowded streets to get an idea of where they were and what they could get into doing. Nell was much shorter than he and Josh didn't take into account the fact that she couldn't see what he was seeing. It wasn't that he was trying to be oblivious to her disadvantages, Joshua just wasn't used to taking another person into consideration when he was going somewhere or doing something. He was overall a very solitary and self-reliant guy. He went places on his own and looked out for himself. It wasn't, in fact, until Nell expressed that she could not see when he realised what was going on. "Oh!" he said, giving away his surprise at the fact that she was not in fact observing the buildings but the backs of the people in front of her. "Sorry," he apologised swiftly, realising that he might have wanted to choose a less crowded route or at least tell her what the hell was going on. He mentally kicked himself--some boyfriend he was being, eh? "It shouldn't be far now," he promised. "I saw a sign--" He cut himself off as they came upon the building and he gestured to the very sign which he was speaking of before leading the way inside. His guilt over not looking out for her as well as himself passed very quickly in the face of the tantalizing scents--how much food was there? Certainly a lot, it seemed.
He grinned in response to the remark. "Why thank you." They were both aware--or so he thought--that Joshua was only kidding around. If he really had a problem with how much Nell ate then he likely would have vocalised it by now. He wasn't dating her for looks and it wasn't like her overeating made her get bigger anyway. She must have had some sort of a gym regimen. He pushed such thoughts away lest he start thinking about the trapeze again and sat down with her to inspect his own plate. "I suppose it is," he shrugged, not really knowing the names of all the vegetables under the sun. He was used to having the cook prepare everything, after all. He knew the basics from his cookbooks and the like on vegetarianism but he wasn't aspiring to be a cook himself or anything. "I did," he confirmed when Nell popped one in her mouth and displayed her liking for the vegetable. He bit the end off one, shrugged, then tossed the rest down as well. It wasn't bad and it wasn't like it was his favourite food, either. Potatoes covered that base. He'd gotten a wide variety of those; mashed, roasted, fried, diced. He also had a considerable number of onion rings, which he worked on first. He didn't like to mix flavours too much by combining different foods. "All you can eat is a pretty nice deal for me right now," he chuckled, remarking on something Nell had said earlier. He worked his way around the lesser mountain of food and then excused himself to go and get seconds. He wasn't like Nell in that he would pile everything onto one plate--instead, he filled it normally and just got up whenever he wanted more.
He returned to a Nell with a pained expression across her features and her fork lying abandoned. Immediately he knew that something was up, he just wasn't exactly sure of what that 'something' was. His brows knitted together in concern and confusion, debating between sitting down and going over to Nell instead. He settled for putting his plate down where he'd been sitting before and then just leaning against the table as he surveyed her. "What isn't?" he questioned, beginning to panic internally but managing to keep his calm. He was a person who often assumed the worst but didn't like to show it. Indeed, his features didn't show too much of the intense worry he was feeling. "How do you feel?" he further questioned. "Did something go down the wrong way, or...?" He left this question open-ended to imply that she should correct him if he was wrong. He knew that sometimes swallowing a sharp bit of food down your throat could be remarkably unpleasant and hoped that it might just be that. Still, he was going to make sure they were both on the same page before he started to really worry about her. He was probably just making silly assumptions as usual. "Do you feel like you'll be ill, or something?" Getting sick on vacation was never fun, especially as it dragged down the general mood of the group. Still, he was more concerned about Nell and her health as opposed to how entertaining this trip was going to be.

the sky be so big * that it broke my soul & i stand on my toes to catch a glimpse She wasn’t expecting Josh to be aware of her shortness, and there would be nothing to help with that short of high heels. It was just a problem with someone like her, something that Josh did not have to worry about. Nell simply smiled at him and shook her head like she didn’t understand his apology. ”It’s not your fault I’m like a fun-size candy bar,” she joked. It’s not something she really thought about, even when she was with the skyscrapper that is Josh. She knew some people could develop complexes about it, but it was just a part of her that she’d learned to accept. Besides, shortness didn’t hamper her ability to eat, so she didn’t worry about anything there. The only thing she had to worry about was what she wanted to eat first and how much she should eat. Nell still tried to be healthy with her appetite, and it showed by the fact that she idn’t have a lot of junk food. The okra was a vegetable after all, but it still didn’t compare to her favorite food, shepherd’s pie. Still, it was pretty high up there. And she was a bit surprised that he had to get seconds before her, but then again she did get a mountain of food.
Josh returned with another plate of food, stoic as ever as she tried to figure out what was going on. There was definite panic because anything wrong with her body meant instant anxiety. ”Err…” Scrunching up her nose, she tried to describe what she was feeling, but since this was very new to her she fell short of an explanation. ”My stomach hurts? And...my throat feels tight.” Nell had never been to a doctor before, but she knew this was what it was like to describe symptoms to one from her days with Tilly. ”I don’t think so,” she told him weakly. No, that wasn’t the feeling she was getting—she knew that much, but it was rather difficult to discern what she was feeling through the haze of pain. She shook her head weakly, a frown touching her lips. She didn’t get ‘ill’ so that was definitely out of the question. Then what is this? She’d gotten stomachaches before, but this was something much more intense than that. Nell didn’t understand why she was feeling so strange. Leaning over, she rested her forehead against the table and said, ”Uh…it’s a possibility that I may pass out.” Still, she was trying to keep her boyfriend from worrying too much even though she was being honest about the fact that she really did feel faint. Nell just didn’t know what to do with herself without telling Josh him that she really was feeling terrible.

People were starting to look round at the girl with her head on the table and the boy standing over her with an expression of forced calm. Joshua hoped briefly that they didn't assume he'd slipped something in her drink or anything. It must have seemed rather suspicious to an outsider why someone would have this sort of reaction where their partner really had no concern at all. This was merely Joshua's way of dealing with situations. He always tried to be the one that didn't panic and even though Nell wasn't panicking either--far from it; did she ever?--he was still trying to keep a level head since he was the one faring better in this situation. "Maybe it was something you ate?" he suggested, frowning at the plates of food distrustfully. Internally he checked himself for symptoms, trying to figure out if his throat felt tight or if he was in any way nauseous or dizzy or even just uncomfortable. Nothing. He swallowed for one last check and found himself to be feeling completely normal. If it was something in the food then surely they'd both be feeling it, right? You're studying to become a doctor, he scolded himself, and here was the worthless and helpless feeling again. It always made him feel awful when there was nothing he could do about a situation, especially when that situation involved a girl who happened not only to be his girlfriend but his best friend as well. "I can't think..." He trailed off, shaking his head. People were still casting gazes in their direction. A few merely looked concerned and others were glaring at Joshua as if he had something to do with it, further backing up his suspicions that there might be something wrong.
He was nevertheless able to push these thoughts from his mind. What should he care if they thought badly of him and assumed that he was going to do something to Nell? He knew in his own mind that there was nothing going on and so when his girlfriend was feeling ill--or whatever it was she felt--then she came first, not the misguided assumptions of strangers. A pang of distress struck him when she said that she felt as if she might faint. "That's not a good sign," he said. He might not have known what was wrong but he didn't think that fainting could ever really be a good thing. "We should go." It might look odd if they left together when she was in such a state but again, he didn't care. Getting sick when you were at home with your usual doctor to take care of you was one thing--getting sick miles from home was even worse. They were on vacation, this wasn't supposed to happen. The idea of calling his father came to mind but he didn't want any sort of panic or overreaction on part of his family and so he put out a hand in silent offer to help her to her feet if she felt like she needed the support. "I'll take you to the hospital if you want," he said. "I know where it is, we passed the sign on the way here... I don't want anything to happen to you." The concern wasn't saturating his tone and his expression stayed stoic but the words were enough to convey that he was really worried about Nell. "Can you think of what you might have done or what might have caused it?"

the sky be so big * that it broke my soul & i stand on my toes to catch a glimpse By then, Nell was taking deep breaths to try and ease the pain. It’s what she did with her mother—breathe in through the nose, out through the mouth, calm and steadying breaths. But the nausea and sickness was hard to move past. ”I don’t know,” Nell mumbled into the tablecloth. She wasn’t even aware that he may not have heard her. She tried to force herself to think past the agony, but it was getting hard as she wrapped her arms around her stomach. Something she ate? ”I don’t think so,” she lamely amended, her voice a little louder now. Josh cut himself off before saying anything more, and Nell focused on trying to bring herself together. She was aware of how embarrassing this was, especially since she was showing weakness. She didn’t like that. Nell didn’t get sick, and that’s what she used to reassure herself that there was nothing really wrong with her. She can’t get sick, she was so proud of her immune system that she could think of that as an option.
No, feeling fain was definitely not a good sign, and his words only reaffirmed the fear. Nell didn’t notice the hand offered to her yet, instead she was focused on the table that looked dark thanks to its proximity to her eyes. She screwed her eyes shut when he talked about taking her to the hospital. They were great institutions, when she was not the one being treated at one. Her mind worked through ways to avoid it, to claim that there was nothing wrong with her. It took her a moment to get the words out since she really felt like crying then. Josh was looking for explanations she wished she could give. ”I was feeling fine today, I—“ Her voice was breathy as she spoke, but then she had to stop short when her throat really started to bother her. ”Ouch,” she said quietly. Nell lifted her head and looked up at him with eyes that were even larger than usual. ”I don’t want to stay in a hospital for long,” she said, implying that she did want to go. She wasn’t going to be too stupid—she didn’t feel right (she didn’t feel sick, no), and she understood that her best option would be to go to the hospital. Nell felt the cold fingers of dread creep down her spine. What if something was seriously wrong? Remember: optimism! But it was hard to feel optimistic when you felt as if you were coming close to dying. Nell took his hand to draw herself up from the chair, leaning against him a bit to get her bearings as the nausea did its best to hinder her balance. ”I’m sorry,” she said pathetically. She’d just ruined their meal, after all—that wasn’t fair to anyone.

Joshua was really starting to panic, now. It still wasn't showing in his features but his insides were a mess of confusion and indecision. Most of all, he was worried about Nell. She never showed any signs of weaknesses if she could help it and he knew that she liked to appear as if nothing was wrong at any given time and so having her admitting pain and discomfort like this was alarming. It wasn't like he'd rather have her suffer her pain in silence--no, Josh was incredibly relieved that she'd chosen to tell him rather than hiding it--he was just fretting because he knew that something must be wrong in order for her to talk about it being so. "Sometimes these things do happen suddenly," he pointed out. But what happened so suddenly? He had no idea of the cause and so he had no idea what to do about it. His brain was fried and he knew that it was best to leave this up to the experts in the hospital. It would be stupid to pretend that he could do anything to help Nell right now and as much as he wanted to save her the hell of going to the hospital, he knew that they didn't have much choice. Wait--what if Nell didn't want to go to the hospital? He didn't want to have to force her but he also didn't want to let this go unchecked. He had a moment of dilemma before she said that she would go and he exhaled, relieved. "Alright," he said.
He didn't object to her leaning on him--instead, Joshua braced himself and stood still so that she could catch her balance as much as she needed. "Lean on me if you'd like," he said, worried that she might not be able to hold herself steady if she was feeling as faint as she was. "I don't mind." By this time he was outright ignoring the stares that they were getting because his full attention and concern was on his girlfriend. Internally he was mapping out the streets they'd passed and trying to remember where the hospital was. "Don't apologise," he said with a frown. "This isn't your fault." Shaking his head, he got an idea. How stupid am I to forget the existence of public transportation? He was so used to driving himself around or at very least having a driver that he often didn't consider the option of a cab. He had plenty of money and he wasn't going to be cheap--hell, he'd pay for a private fucking limo if it meant helping Nell. He pulled out his cellphone and called the cab, then placed his hand over Nell's in a comforting gesture when it arrived and they got in. "We need the nearest hospital," he said, then added a little more threateningly, "Don't go taking any crowded streets to get more cash out of this and I'll throw in extra." He might not have taken a lot of taxis in his life but he knew about their shifty ways of taking the main roads and hoping they got stuck in traffic so that the metre rose. He normally wouldn't care too much--he had enough to pay for it either way--but he wanted to get to this hospital as quick as possible. "We'll try to make it a quick visit," he promised Nell in an undertone so that the taxi driver couldn't hear.

the sky be so big * that it broke my soul & i stand on my toes to catch a glimpse Josh said that things can randomly set on like this, and she found enough energy to reject the idea. ”Not to me,” she protested indignantly. ”Not ever.” She’d never had any medical anomalies to speak of. But she didn’t say anything more about that, just shook her head as she leaned it against the table. Just push through it. Or ignore it. You have to do something. She hated being this powerless against something, but when your body rebelled, mind over matter becomes that much more difficult. And she hated where she had to go. ‘I don’t want to go to the hospital,’ she wished she could say. But she had already agreed, and the cab was coming and there was nothing she could do to stop any of it. Getting into the cab, she leaned her head against his shoulder, squeezing her eyes shut again as if that could make the pain go away. Nell barely registered Josh’s words, something about meters and crowded streets. Watching the scenery go by only made her more nauseous, so she didn’t dare open her eyes shut and instead imagined that she was stationary.
They were forced to wait in the emergency room, and she tried to focus on how ironic that was as she filled out paperwork. Health insurance. It took her a moment for her to remember what that was with the sick feeling now the center of her brain function, and she knew she didn’t have any. She was confident enough in her immunes system that she was stupidly sure that she wouldn’t need it—things like this tended to bite her in the ass. Especially once she realized that her father probably had it and she would need to call him. It didn’t take much effort to decide on waiting to fill out the paperwork, especially since she was taken into the emergency room and seated on one of the many beds there. God, she hated being a patient. Especially when she had to describe what had happened, what she’d felt like, and when she had started to feel ill. It didn’t take long before the phsysician informed her that it was most likely a food allergy and injected with something that made her feel much better.
”We’ll have to keep you here a few hours for observation,” he said as she scratched at the back of her head. She felt a little tired, but otherwise her symptoms had cleared up. Luckily, they had run some other tests by putting liquids on her arms and it turned out she wasn’t allergic to anything else. Healthy as a goshdarn horses. She didn’t like the needles that they injected her with, but she was otherwise fine now. ”We’ll run a few blood tests in the meantime. Any idea on what kind of food caused this reaction?” Nell thought for a few moments, and then sighed. She really wished it wouldn't be it, but she had a feeling she was going to be right. ”Well, I had okra for the first time. Could that be it?” The doctor nodded and said, ”Possibly.” He tucked a clipboard under his arm and left, presumably to the lab or something. A nurse approached the bed soon after and handed her the papers to finish filling out, and Nell realized that she couldn’t use her phone in the hospital. So she just listed him as her legal guardian, and when they called him she just prayed he would stay put and give them his insurance information.
Nell was happy to see that Josh was finally allowed in, and she bit the top of the pen before finishing signed her—illegal—name. ”I’ve got some bad news,” she lamented to him, and by the crestfallen expression on her features, one could easily assume it was something earth-shattering. ”I have food allergies. To okra!” Nell laughed then, though it wasn’t as joyful as it could have been. Finding out she was allergic to any kind of food was actually quite devastating. It was something she really got enjoyment out of, and she truly believed there was nothing that she could not eat. ”They shot me up with epinephrine-something-or-other,” she said, grabbing the flesh of her arm and looking down at where the syringe was injected. ”At least I got a Dora the Explorer band-aid out of it.” She smiled for real then. Feeling a lot better, she was now able to regain her dignity. ”Think I can ditch or will they be mad at me?” Josh aspired to be a doctor, so she wondered if he would disapprove of her wanting to get the hell out of the place. She felt like an invalid—she hated to be the patient, even though she wasn’t sick anymore, and she hated being fussed over.

Outside of the room, Joshua was all but calm as he paced the waiting area restlessly, wanting any sort of news--hopefully good news, of course. He didn't want to hear that something terrible had happened to her or anything like that. There were a few others in the room, including an older woman who didn't seem to approve of Joshua's rhythmic tread across the floor; at least judging by her expression, that is. He didn't care. Sitting still was rather hard, and though he did sink into a chair after a moment his brain was reeling with negative possibilities. What if she was really sick? The thought made him nauseous so, not wanting to put himself in the hospital as well, he tried to be optimistic. This was rather hard given the fact that sickness was bad no matter how mild it was, but he at least held off on the thoughts of death, dying, or any long-standing illness. She'll be fine, you're overreacting. It was probably because he had no idea how Nell had actually felt. She'd tried her best to describe it to him but he didn't know how it had felt in reality. He was probably blowing this out of proportion. He glanced up in surprise when the door opened, having been so focused on his internal mantras that he had forgotten that he'd probably be allowed to go in soon. They said nothing, just nodded, but Josh was on his feet in an instant, anxious to find out if she was alright. At least the doctor didn't look very worried. Always a good sign, right?
His heart nearly stopped when Nell said that she had bad news, but on the surface his features were calm as ever. "Oh?" There was a tightness in his throat and he was feeling a little dizzy from the anticipation. Then she told him what it was and this took a moment to sink in. Blinking, it dawned on him that this was not serious at all--why didn't I think of allergies?!--and that she'd just given him a heart attack for nothing. He swatted her lightly, careful to avoid the place where the bandaid marked her arm. "Nell!" he said disapprovingly, shaking his head. "I thought you were serious!" However, irked though he may be that she'd played around with his fretting emotions like that, even Joshua couldn't help but let out a soft laugh that was weak with relief. She was alright. He ran a hand through the back of his inky black hair and smiled a little. "Sucks about the allergy, though," he sympathized, knowing that it was worse for Nell than it likely would have been for anyone else given how much Nell liked to eat. Still, at least it wasn't anything major like being lactose intolerant. He was pretty sure okra wasn't widely used in other products. "You seem to be feeling a lot better, though, which is good." The 'something or other' that they'd injected into her seemed to be working its magic and so they could probably go back to what they were doing soon enough. Though he was doubtful that Nell would want to return to the buffet when they'd just had such bad experiences there.
He glanced furtively around as if checking for anyone watching or listening in on their conversation. Then, shrugging, Joshua said, "Who cares if they care?" He was dead serious. Aspiring doctor though he may be, his thoughts were on Nell and her wants and well-being, not that of the people who worked here. Besides, they were from all the way across the country. It wasn't like they could hunt Nell down and lecture her about anything (and they wouldn't anyway) about leaving the hospital early. "If you feel like you want to get out of here, I'm right behind you." Maybe on the inside he'd prefer Nell to follow instructions to make sure that she really was alright, but he didn't want to push this. He'd promised her they wouldn't stay long and so he wasn't going to go back on his word and start in at her like some mother hen. "Where do you want to go, by the way?" he asked. Joshua wondered if Nell was still hungry, considering their meal had been cut a little short by her allergic reaction to the okra. He was alright with just getting food from somewhere else if she wanted, food that was allergy-free and that they could eat while relaxing about this whole ordeal. He hadn't even needed to get his parents involved--thank goodness. "I'm up for whatever you are."
