Joshua was getting sick of the Fire elementals and their treatment of him. It had been a little while since they'd 'accepted' him back into their midst, but it was starting to feel more and more like they were trying to antagonise him. Jokes were made about his affiliation with the Earth students--most especially Nell--and the speakers certainly made no effort to keep their voices down, fully intending for him to overhear. Josh tried his best to ignore their snide remarks and just continue with studying, reading, whatever he happened to be doing, but tensions were beginning to reach paramount. How many more times could he ignore the fact that they'd accidentally tried to trip him up, or accidentally set fire to his notes when he wasn't paying attention? He could get rid of the flames, but the notes were ruined and he had to go through the painstaking process of researching and rewriting all over again. Immature as it was, that was their plan. They wanted to drive him out or drive him crazy--one or the other, he didn't imagine they were very picky.
At least they aren't Water elementals, he thought sourly, a failed attempt at optimism cutting through his mind. There was nothing positive about the fact that his former allies were ensuring to the last possible chance that he understood just how welcome he was. He could have complained to the leaders, or even the professors, but that was something Joshua didn't do. He didn't really believe in 'tattling' on people unless it was for something serious, and as annoying as this was, it could hardly be considered serious. It had been enough to make him lose his temper on more than one occasion however, and he was now serving detention on the weekend for causing a bad burn on a girl's arm. He hadn't even tried to defend himself and insist that she had provoked him, he'd just glowered and nodded to show that he understood. It was hardly even worth his effort at the moment to argue. All they would do was play innocent or pull the cheap card and whine, "at least we didn't hurt him, he hurt us". He cursed his anger sometimes, but it was very hard to remain calm when everyone was quite literally teaming up to destroy your sanity.
The last straw--or the one that broke the camels back, as they say--came in the form of a group, a trio of sneering and jeering idiots that decided they were going to poke fun at his allegiance to Nell. Again. "How's the flower girl, Dale?" one of them asked in a mock sweet tone. He didn't answer, instead continuing to read his book and hoping they'd lose interest after a while. They were out on the grounds, and this was free territory. They had no rights over him here, or anywhere really. "Hey!" she snarled, literally striding over and knocking the book from his hands. "I asked you a question!" He immediately stood up to retaliate--too close for comfort, that had been--but before he could do much, her boyfriend stepped forward. He wasn't as tall as Joshua and didn't have much muscle to brag about, but he was a senior. In college. Joshua regarded him warily and then snapped at the girl, "Grow up and lay off. Don't you have better things to do?" She responded icily with, "Why don't you run along back to your girlfriend, Joshua? We certainly don't want you here." He rolled his eyes. "No, really--how old are you?"
He normally would have done anything to try and ensure they didn't get their way, hating the idea of giving in. But he could feel his ire toward the girl increasing, and he knew that her boyfriend would step in and abuse the use of his powers if Joshua so much as lifted a finger. That sickening feeling of being powerful came back, and he glared for a moment longer before stalking off and back to the building. He abandoned rationality and went as far down in the building as he could go, no real sense of direction in mind. Get away, that was all he wanted. The dungeons were shadowy and quiet, Josh not even bothering to ignite a torch for light. He stayed as far away from the Fire dormitories as he possibly could, finding himself down a shadowy part of the dungeons that he'd never really explored before. He'd been down here once or twice, but each time he'd had a certain direction he was supposed to be going. This was a place where nothing of interest seemed to lie. Classes weren't held in the dungeons of course, and the Fire students mostly laid claims to the area of the dungeon their tunnel was in. He ran his hand along one wall for a sense of stability as he continued to walk, eyes only slightly adjusted to the gloom. But he liked it this way. Maybe if he stayed here for long enough, the anger would fade. He definitely wasn't getting any homework done tonight.

So Arielle was just chilling in the commons, listening to her iPod while sitting down, when a Fire girl came by and glared at her. Well, she mimicked the gesture back to her which didn't seem to phase her and continued to walk off. It were times like these why she's happy she's an upperclassman. If she were just a high schooler, she'd probably be bullied like the other Earth kid they just got done with. But they knew better. She didn't want to sound cocky or anything, but she totally could have taken on the little girl. It would be a dirty fight, but thanks to her skill, she might, just might, be the victor in their little scuttle.
She watched the girl curiously join two other dudes and point in the direction of someone. Ari looked there too and eyed the quiet yet scary Josh Dale. He was just sitting there, minding his business, when the trio approached him. They seemed hostile, and looked like they were about to cause some trouble. And sure enough they did.
She happened to be close by, so she heard the conversations that took place after pressing the mute button. It started out by an almost innocent seeming question if Ari didn't know any better. She asked about Nell. She didn't outright say it, but Ari knew better. She hated it when people would talk trash about her, especially when she's not there to defend herself. She wanted to get up from her spot, but her instincts told her to chill and stay where she's at.
Apparently Josh had enough from the girl and stood up to do whatever he was about to do. Too bad he couldn't though, because what looked like her boyfriend stood up in front of her to defend her. From what? Hopefully a fight, but that wouldn't be fair for him. Three against one is so not fair. She was about to get up and give him some help when he did the smarter thing and walked away. That was a relief. She didn't really want to have to fight, but would if she had to. While he stalked off, she thought of her own way of getting revenge. There was a bush near the girl and Ari grinned mischievously.
While the cocky Fire chick was staring off in the direction of Josh with satisfaction on her face, Ari took the chance given to her. Stealthily, she caused a branch to grow from the plant and snaked its way around the girl's ankle. Using her fingers, she tied a knot around the leg of the girls. She smiled, then looked at her companions. They should face the wrath of Arielle as well. She copied the gesture with them too.
Walking after Josh, she turned around to hear a 'thump' behind. She smiled as she saw the witch flat on her stomach, while her mini skirt was shown to the world. The other two saw her and attempted to help her out when they fell as well. Witnesses came and started laughing their asses off at them. Arielle would have loved to join them on their banter, but she wanted to see if that Josh kid was okay.
She ran up a little distances to see a blur of a tall figure enter into the dungeon. She slowed down so he wouldn't hear or see her following him. Which made her wonder why she's doing that anyway? She wasn't a stalker. In fact, stalkers freaked her out. Right now, she just felt the need to give this guy some comfort: to let him know that people were there for him.
She had a lot of respect for this guy as well. From what she heard, he's not on the Fire's side, but on Earth and Water. It's because of Nell. They were close, she's been told, and he stuck up for her. That made her wonder about herself. Would she have done the same if she were him? She hoped she would have, but knew deep down inside she probably wouldn't.
Entering the place always gave her the creeps. She absolutely hated dark places. She wanted to turn around and go back but fought the urge. She pressed herself to go on, while breathing in the muggy, dirty smell of this place. Who would ever want to come down here was question that lingered in her mind. She figured he came here often to get away from everything, and she couldn't blame him for that. She'd do the same...if she were brave enough.
She was hoping the man would stop or at least create a torch. But no, he didn't. It was getting pretty dark so she took out her cellphone and used the glow to guide her. She carefully listened to his footsteps so she wouldn't get lost, but too late now. She didn't know where she was. They took some many turns that she probably would never leave this place and become trapped forever...such things shouldn't be thought right about now.
Not really paying attention to where she's going, she tripped over something and muttered a curse. Rubbing her ankle, she flashed the glow over to the object and her eyes grew large. A scream came from her mouth. She didn't know it was her own for a moment, then realized it was her and covered her mouth. Skeletons. Oh. My Gosh.. She hoped, no, prayed that it was fake. If not, then she was surely going to pass out right then and there.

Joshua was completely unaware that he was being followed as he ventured further into the dungeons, too irritated and self-absorbed to notice the footsteps that echoed very faintly behind him in the shadowy corridors. He was not used to how cold the dungeons could get--the most commercial part of the place was nearest the dormitories of the Fire elementals, the part which sweltered with heat and seemed to warn outsiders off. But he could tell that he was getting farther and farther from the dorms as the temperature steadily started to drop, even making him shiver slightly as a draft breezed along the corridor. "Damn idiots," he muttered, tucking his books under his arm and steeling himself against the anger that threatened to make him burst. If he could just stay down here alone for a bit, then maybe he could be alright. He'd be fine. It took ages for the rage to wear off, it always did. It would be hours before he was back to his normal self again. Until those hours had passed, he'd be very angry and volatile and so snippy with almost everyone that it would be nearly unbearable. Little things frustrated him when he was this upset.
The lack of light in the dungeons didn't irritate him so much, for it was calming to let the shadows press in on all sides. It was comforting rather than frightening. His parents had not raised him to be afraid of the dark, they'd never told him spooky stories or allowed him to watch movies about the monsters under the bed. His books had taught him logic and reasoning, his parents had taught him that the darkness could be just as safe or as dangerous as the light. The only thing different was the change in vision, and Joshua figured that he would hear someone if they were approaching. Of course, this proved to be wrong when Arielle continued to go unnoticed. Whilst Joshua didn't bother lighting any of the torches, he did sweep the dungeons with a momentary and searing heat. It was meant to keep himself warm, but it could also be quite uncomfortable to an Earth (or Thunder) elemental within range. He was not aiming for her as he did not know that she was there, but the area of effect was quite large. He relaxed a little as the warmth soothed his muscles and stopped the goosebumps from crawling on his skin.
A sudden and unexpected scream pierced the air just then, making Joshua freeze where he stood and then spin around rapidly. It made him a little dizzy, but that didn't stop him from immediately lighting every torch within range of his fire and then creating a large tongue of flame in preparation for an attack. As a college student with impressive stamina, it didn't take much out of him to prepare himself for a fight. He was assuming that perhaps it was the girls and their stupid male bodyguard that wished to pursue him, to teach him some sort of twisted lesson about running off. "Stop fucking following me," he snarled, not realising that it was an Earth graduate that had been pursuing him. Not until, that is, he noticed someone cowering in front of what appeared to be a skeleton. It wasn't really alarming to Joshua, seeing as these dungeons had once actually been used to hold the wrongdoers of elemental society. What was more, he didn't recognise this girl as being one of the Fire elementals at all, let alone one of the ones that had been antagonising him on the grounds. His brow furrowed, trying to decide whether he recognised her from class or anything.
Nope.
Breathing hard from the sudden panic, Joshua managed to disperse the frightening tongue of fire and strode over to the girl. "What are you doing down here?" he asked somewhat abrasively, rolling his eyes. He wasn't trying to come across as prickly or mean, he'd just been startled by her sudden shriek. Realising that it was probably a bit rude to just stand and tower over her as she clutched her ankle and covered her mouth, he sighed a bit and offered her a hand. "If you don't like skeletons," he said rationally. "then why did you come this way? Don't you know this part of the dungeon is disused? And you don't seem like a Fire elemental to me." His tone was matter-of-fact, precise. He still hadn't realised that she'd been tagging after him the entire time, and if he'd known she was stalking him he might not have offered to help her to her feet. He frowned slightly when the light from the torches gave him a better look at her, confused by some sense of familiarity. He felt as if he'd seen her somewhere but didn't really know who she was. "What element are you in?" he questioned bluntly, deciding to get it over with.

Deep breaths girl...just take deep breaths... She had to tell herself to breath, because her lungs wouldn't do it on their own. Skeletons. There were actual skeletons down here. She heard rumors that they used to keep people here a long time ago, but they were just rumors, or at least she thought so. Now, she confirmed them, at her own risk. Keep it together girl, they're dead. They can't hurt you. It's the people that are alive you need to worry about. That seemed to calm the freshman, until she thought of Michael Jackson's Thriller with the dead people rising from the ground. Nice mental picture.
It started getting hot all of a sudden. Heat, what? Where's that coming from? Was it her imagination? No, it couldn't be. She felt her head, and indeed it was warm; it little warmer than usual. Well, from her position below, it has to be cooler down here than if she were to stand up. Speaking of which, why is she still down here sitting with her new dead friend? Oh yeah, that's right. My legs disobeyed my command to stand up To be honest, the only thing that's working is her brain, but how long would that last?
She looked at the way she came, then they way she was heading. Did he hear her? He should have; her scream could have woken the dead. Looking back at the body, she shuddered at the thought. But, what if he had headphones on? Then he definitely did not hear her. And if he did have them in, he could be long ways away from her. She'd be lost in the cave forever until someone started looking for her. But no one knew she was down here.
A dimming of a light caught her attention. She looked at her cell to see the battery light blink dead, then shut off. Oh no. Now she was in complete darkness. She hated the darkness. It brought back a terrible memory from the past. That accursed day her father went to her room and did terrible, unimaginable things to a young girl. She pulled herself into a fetal position as the events passed through her mind and started to whimper. She was going to lose it down here, until lights flared above her. They were torches and it looked like it went on for miles in both directions. She heard a dangerous sounding command from the way she was heading. It must have been him. She exhaled a breath that she was holding left her as she heard his voice. Good. He knew she was down here. The harshness of the command didn't bother her, she was just happy he knew someone else was down here.
She felt a tiny drop of sweat trickle down her forehead and along her ear. She wiped it away as the footsteps grew closer. His face grew into her view as he looked down at her with a serious gaze. He asked what she was doing down here, and she didn't know how to respond. What was she doing down here? He's perfectly fine and capable of taking care of himself. She was about to make up some excuse when he offered his head. Reluctantly, she took it, and stood shakily to her feet. She put a little weight on the leg she tripped over the skeleton to find out it was perfectly fine. It was just her mind thinking that it was injured. Silly girl.
He asked her a logical question. It made perfect sense. "Well, uh," she said in a shaky voice. "I didn't think the rumors were true, but I guess they are." She chuckled a bit for no apparent reason. He then commented on the fact that she didn't seem like a Fire elemental. "You happen to be right. I'm an Earth chick," she said with tiredness in her voice. An Earth chick with serious issues following a guy she didn't know into a deep, dark dungeon. Silly girl indeed.
To his first question, she hesitantly replied back. "Well, I saw your little confrontation earlier and came to see if...you're alright." Now that she said it, she felt stupid. This guy was fine, and if he wasn't, he probably didn't want her help. If she were him, she'd think she was crazy and tell her to get lost. Let's see if she's right

Well, at least the girl allowed herself to be pulled to her feet. Joshua was a little irked that she'd disrupted him, but he wasn't angry with her in the sense that it was the Fire elementals that had ticked him off. The anger he was feeling right now was purely residual and directed toward no one in particular, turning him into a bitter jerk for a couple of hours until he could calm down. The irritation was displayed in every feature of his expression, but at least he didn't insult Arielle or anything like that. He was hardly going to stoop to that sort of pettiness. Besides, he didn't even know this girl--didn't know anything about her except that she was quite stupid to be wandering around in these dark dungeons all alone.
Joshua folded his arms and arched an eyebrow as if to say, "Really?" It wasn't that he didn't believe her, just that he thought it was strange that she hadn't taken the rumours at face value. It was a dungeon, after all. Not everyone is a history nut like you, he reminded himself sharply. "They're definitely true," he concluded, glancing down and toward the skeleton that had given her such a fright. Looked sufficiently dead to Joshua, and thus he didn't feel threatened in the least. The dead did not scare Joshua. He didn't believe in the supernatural, he didn't believe in an afterlife, or in zombies, or other horror incarnations of the dead. This was perhaps why he also had no fear of the dark. "It's a real skeleton," Joshua mused, turning his attention back to Arielle, "but it won't do us any harm. He--or she--is dead now, after all." The Fire elemental shrugged. It didn't frighten him at all.
So she was an Earth elemental. This made Joshua feel somewhat better, actually. "Ah. One of the flower children, eh?" He smirked, but unlike if most of his kind had said it, Joshua did not mean this to be taken as an insult. He was alright with the Earth students now. They had sheltered him when his own element had booted him out on his ass and they had also taken care of Nell when everyone had been trying to kill her, which was a good enough reason in Joshua's book to like someone. If they protected his friend, they were alright with him. "I think my element is pretty obvious," he remarked, glancing around at the torches which had thrown the dungeons into a brilliant firelight. He extinguished some of them so as not to feel too ridiculous, but kept the ones directly around he and Arielle perfectly lit. Joshua also sent out another pulse of heat to warm the dungeons, not liking the fact that it was cooling off again. He was a Fire kid, he needed his warmth and fire to feel truly comfortable down here. It was ironic to consider that the area around the Fire dorms was always sweltering without the influence of the Fire students needed.
"Oh."
There was a sudden awkwardness, perhaps even a tinge of hostility as Joshua realised what Arielle had been doing. "So you were following me." Gray eyes narrowed accusingly toward the Earth elemental, hating the idea that someone had stalked him all the way from the grounds and into the depths of the creepy, dark dungeons. Didn't she know it wasn't the safest thing to stalk an irritated Fire graduate? "Did you have any intention of alerting me of your presence, or were you just going to commit yourself to being my personal shadow for a few hours?" His tone was slightly scathing as he frowned, arms still folded across his chest. He wasn't so much infuriated as he was irked and a little suspicious. Why would she care what his element did to him? The war was over now, the alliances were back in place. He was supposed to be their enemy again.
Only he didn't feel like an enemy. Not any more. It was strange for Joshua to consider this, but he felt a lot more like he was one of them. He had never really fit in with the Fire elementals before, and even though he didn't fit with the personality and stereotypes of the Earth elementals, they'd still given him a better welcome than his own kind ever had. Huffing out a breath in irritation, he said, "... did you hurt yourself when you fell?" It was spoken with a hesitating concern, like he was testing the waters of their situation.

While he pulled her up, she noticed that he's still pretty upset. It must have been from the encounter earlier. She didn't blame him; she would still be pretty pissed right now too. Heck, she's mad for him, thanks to her empathy towards others. She developed that during her own little depression time she called her very own Dark Ages. Speaking of which, it looked like this dungeon existed back then, what with all of the spider webs and dead people lying everywhere. She folded her arms as she looked around at her surroundings in nervousness.
"Yeah, I've figured that out now..." She half mumbled to herself. After today, she'll start to pay attention to the rumors she hears. She'll need to listen and be wary, but not believe everything she hears. Her hazels focused in on him in shock. Her fears were correct: it was a real skeleton, not some cruel practical joke some Fire and/or Thunder student would play on others coming down here. Regardless, I've learned not to go down here anymore. She nodded in agreement at his latest statement. "That's true. It's the live ones we have to worry about."
A smirk appeared on her face as he called her by one of the many nicknames given to her element. "Yup. That's me, and proud of it." ...even though she didn't act like one. Nope. At times, she's like a Water element, and others, thanks to her attitude, a Fire. It's funny: some people, when they first encounter her, would think that she's more of a Water than an Earth. Well, her grandmother was a Water person, if that meant anything.
All he said was "Oh." to her comment. She felt her face heat up, not from the heat coming from him, but from her own embarrassment. She told herself he was fine by himself, but no; she had to come down here and make sure herself. She looked up at his eyes scowling down at hers. They didn't scare her, only made her feel guilty. "Well, if you put it in terms like that..." She let her sentence wander along the dungeon walls. What other terms were there to put it? Stalking would be a step lower than that.
This time she put her hands on her hips in defense. "I would have eventually told you I was here...or just left." Her snippy attitude wasn't towards him, it was just her frustration at this whole situation coming out. She felt like an idiot right now, yes. But she wouldn't let him make her feel any worse than she already is feeling. The last time I stick my head out for someone...
Ari then folded her arms together in frustration and looked away. His next comment took her by surprise. After all of this, she's surprised he would care even a little for her. She was expecting a 'get lost' or 'worry about yourself' something along those lines. It just goes to show you don't really know people.
"Yeah...it's alright. I think I may have exaggerated the pain a bit." The last thing she needed was for anyone to worry about her. Her mother and brothers are doing enough of that. But it was still nice to know someone cared. "I'm Arielle, by the way." She decided to lighten up the mood with a quick subject change. "So um, that was cool what you did with the torches. I've always secretly wanted to be Fire instead of Earth. Quite twisted huh?"

The girl seemed a little defensive and offended when he called her out for following her, something which made Joshua arch an eyebrow in response. She's the stalker, not me. He really did see it as stalking, but in a lighter sense than when Angel had stalked him. Angel was a real frightening piece of work, whereas this Earth girl seemed a lot more docile and had good intentions, even if they were carried out in a not-so-great manner. "You wouldn't be too pleased if I followed you around," he pointed out. "It's unsettling." He meant that the idea of having someone follow you in general could be a little creepy, not so much that her following him had been as such. He was more irked than angry with her, for if he was truly upset he would have displayed that with biting words and a display of his strength.
Josh just nodded when she said that her injury wasn't that bad, not sure what else to say to that. Unlike Arielle, Joshua Dale was not an empathetic person. It took a deep level of trust and empathy between another human being before he could consider himself close enough to them for true caring. If Nell was hurt, it would affect him deeply. If Jake was hurt, he would be irked with whatever or whomever had done the deed. But when this stranger appeared injured, Joshua was only going through the motions when it came to inquiring after her health. Not that he was a complete jerk, he just wasn't quite as kind as some might have liked. "Arielle," he mused. "I recognise the name. You were with Nell when Cynthia allegedly passed." In short, she was the 'alibi girl'. That was how she would identify with him, because it meant a lot to know that there was someone who stuck with her.
"I take it you already know my name," he said smoothly, "so I won't bother introducing myself." After all, why would she have followed him all the way down into the dungeons if she wasn't aware of who he was? It wasn't like the Earth elementals to go stalking their counterparts in Fire, after all. Joshua really wasn't trying to be antagonistic, really, it was just a part of his personality that made him sound so suave yet underhanded, almost like it was an unintentional insult. But he was not insulting her, because if he really had a problem with her the Fire graduate wouldn't have expressed concern. "Unless of course this is a case of curiosity killing the cat. But I doubted as much." He shrugged, as if to say that it didn't matter to him either way.
The subject change was unexpected in more ways than one. Not only was he not expecting her to turn the conversation on such a dime, Joshua really hadn't ever thought that an Earth student had an interest. "A bit of pyromania in you, eh?" The thought amused him, and a light sort of smirk blossomed across his features. Holding out his hand, palm up, he winked as a flower made from fire blossomed in his palm, then vanished into smoke. "Why the interest, Arielle?" He was a little intrigued, now. Plus, the fact that she'd helped out his best friend in one of her times of greatest need meant that the girl was automatically cool with him. He wouldn't hurt her even if there was an animosity between them.

She nodded in agreement. "It's not that I think you're wrong for scolding me or anything. It's just..." What? She never really thought she was creeping until he said it aloud? "I just never really thought this plan out I guess." She shrugged it off and sat on a nearby rock.
Again, she nodded, but this time with a smile. "Yes, that Arielle. And I was with her." She didn't need to prove it for him. She's seen him and Nell together talking and whatnot. After observation and rumors going around, she figured he believed them both. "I'm just so glad this war stuff is over. I was afraid I'd have to pluck off one of the Thunder and/or Fire students...no offense." She added the latter as an afterthought. She forgot already that he's a Fire guy. He seemed so unlike one it's creepy. Well, from her observations of him, at least.
It would still be polite to do so She thought silently to herself. But not everyone's polite, and he had a right to be rude to her, for stalking him and all. She mentally shuddered at the thought. Stalking. She stalk someone. Hey, it involved good intentions, right? So it's not reeeeally stalking. It's more like...checking up on someone. Yeah, that's it. She smirked and gave herself a mental pat on the back. She felt a little better now.
"I already know of you, from what I've heard and seen." She took as if she didn't really care either. She laughed a little at his comment. "You have no idea..." She liked fire, she really did. So much that she accidentally put the hall kitchen on fire. She was just playing with matches...which is a no-no, and BAM, fire. She learned not to do that anymore at a later-than-usual age. Ari looked down in his hand to see a fire-flower before her eyes. "Amazing," she murmured to herself as she gazed at the plant.
'Why the interest,' he asked, so she took a moment to think about. "Well," she said slowly while gathering her thoughts. "This is probably wrong of me to think this, but I feel as though fire represents strength, and I definitely need that. Don't get me wrong, I love my Earthiness and all. It's just...that's the way I feel I guess." She felt in her mind that Fire students were the stronger of all the elements. She knew it not to be true, but she still couldn't help feel that. Feeling weak and vulnerable is what she often felt, and she absolutely hated it. Plus, she felt that Earth wasn't a strong enough element for her. Talk about betrayal, huh?

Joshua nodded when she tried to explain herself to him, shrugging a little. "I didn't assume that you did." Most people that actually planned to stalk someone were psychopathic, and even though he didn't know Arielle personally he'd never heard any sort of strange rumours about her. Besides, they wouldn't have taken her alibi story seriously if she was some crackpot or nutcase. Not that it really mattered to Joshua either way, as usual. The point was that they had bought her story and Nell's and that they had stopped going after her. That was, after all, the only thing that he had cared about. His friend and her safety were the only things that mattered to him, at least when concerning the war. He'd abandoned his own element to protect her, after all.
He merely waved a hand when she added 'no offence' to the end of her words. "None taken," Josh replied. "I was really close to going for their throats myself." It wasn't fair to do what they had done to Nell, he wasn't alright with that. It made him tense up just thinking about it and so he tried to push the thoughts from his mind. "I was on your side, after all." Or, more specifically, Nell's side. If Earth had abandoned her, he would have been against them as well. Honestly, she had been the one to connect him with the Earth kids. Now he was alright with their kind because of the hospitality and genuine natures they'd displayed around him.
"Oh?" he replied. "What exactly have you heard and seen?" The rumours about him were not kind. Joshua was neither deaf nor dumb to the way that the students of the Academy spread their lies and their gossip, and he'd heard a lot of things about himself. Sometimes there were elements of truth that were exaggerated to some extreme degree, other times he was just sure that they decided to get together and come up with something wild.
Fire representing strength? Joshua frowned thoughtfully, considering that. "I suppose I can see where you're coming from," he admitted. "Our element is almost purely offensive, after all." Earth could be used to make pretty gardens and to change the colours of naturally growing things, whereas Fire was just purely deadly and destructive. You could be like Joshua and learn to manipulate it in small ways as he had with learning how to make shapes, but there wasn't much you could do in terms of non-damaging things. "But there's always stone manipulation. Can't get much stronger than a brick wall, after all." You could, but he was only being metaphorical.
"I think I understand," he said, nodding. He remembered how his mother talked about how she would always have picked Fire first, but how she sometimes envied the Earth elementals because of the beautiful things they could do for their gardens. Maybe it was something like that for Arielle. Joshua, meanwhile, was happy where he was. He wouldn't change it for the world.

"Good," she said. She's glad he didn't think she was a complete nut-job. She'll make sure that this is the first and last time she decides to follow someone, especially in a place like this. If her brother found out about this, he'd hit the roof. He'd probably lecture her about the consequences of doing something absolutely insane like that. But, she didn't blame him; someone needed to do it. Her father was God knows where, and she didn't care. The bastard could be rotting in this dungeon for all she cared. No, that would be too close for her. Maybe a far away dungeon...Yeah, that sounds better.
She nodded at his statement, knowing that he really didn't take the offense. It's a sad thing when you know you're own Element is screwed up, but she's glad that he's one of the few that recognizes it. "True, you were, and I thank you for it. I'm glad Nell has people like us to protect her. I'm over-protective of my friends I guess. They refer to me as the Mama Bear." She shrugged it off as if it were nothing. She's being completely honest. If anyone ever threatened her friends or family, she'd go ape-shit all over them.
She smirked at his question and replied "Enough. I've heard things like you burning a kid here and there, you know, the good stuff." She made a sideways shrug then looked up at him from her seating position. "But I've seen enough to know that you just want to be left alone most of the time." She's seen it, but she didn't do it. It didn't occur to Ari that maybe that time was now and that she had no business coming down here to check up on him like he was a 3-year-old.
She nodded, listening to his explanation, and then smiled. "No, you can't. I'm still working the kinks outta that one." Earth's mainly defense, and she's been defensive all of her life. For now on, she wanted to be offensive. Ari's tired of people pushing her around and getting the best of her. It's time now to finally take a stand for herself, and the ones she loved. "I guess Earth is best for decorating and all that good stuff." Eh, she liked decorating. Her side of her dorm is filled with her sketches mixed with flowers that never wilted, thanks to her ability.
A random question popped up in her head, so she voiced it out loud. "What was the weirdest or most oddest thing you've ever done with your power?" Like, roast marshmallows or, give someone a tan. She didn't know. She also didn't know why the question formed in her head. "I can tell you what I've done. I attempted to make a Big Foot with some kid." It didn't turn out so well, what with all of the obvious twigs and leaves covering it, but she was proud of her little accomplishment nonetheless. "Sorry for the randomness...I'm like that I guess." She snorted at her own explanation.
"That's good then. The people I talk to don't, so you're a first in that department." They would say that she's betraying her own nature and all that jazz, but she knew she wasn't alone. Many girls wish they weren't their current weight, height, etc. While Arielle didn't mind the two, she felt that way about her extra ability.

Joshua only chuckled when Arielle spoke. It amused him that she was so protective over her friends, mostly because this was one thing on which they could actually relate. "It seems we've got that in common." Nell was his best friend, one of his only friends. He'd not even given siding with his own alliance a thought the moment they had announced that they were going to attack her. Remembering that day in the mess hall and the amount of rage he had felt toward each and every soul in that room that was supportive toward the idea of murdering Nell, he couldn't imagine that any of her friends had been very pleased. Even the Earth students who'd barely known her at the time had rose up to defend her. "I may have a reputation as a loner, but my friends mean the world to me." He blinked slowly, his gray eyes serious. There wasn't anything he wouldn't do for someone he trusted. Even though he might not trust someone like Jake, Asha or Philomena quite as much as he trusted Nell, Josh would still give his life to protect them. Friendship was something that meant everything to him.
The slightest hint of a smirk touched Joshua's lips. "Those rumours are probably true." His temper was practically a legend amongst those that knew him and even amongst some that didn't provided they listened to the rumours and gossip of the Academy. Joshua was pretty well-known in the Academy because of the fact that he'd been the leader of the Fire elementals once. If not, his reputation might not have been half as grand. Many were scared of him because of his anger issues and his reputation for violence. "There are others, however, that you'd do best to disregard." Like the ones about he and Nell, for example. She was just a friend--a best friend, perhaps, but a friend all the same. He'd heard ridiculous things about the two of them ever since he'd stood up for her. Not that Joshua cared. Let them talk. Let them all talk. I don't give a damn about any of them. "That sounds about right," he agreed with her. He did indeed like to be left alone more often than not. The irony that she knew this and that she'd still followed him was not lost on Josh.
Decorating? This made him snort in contempt. "Tell that to the professor that nearly strangled me with a vine the other day when he caught me arguing with one of his students." He was being serious in a joking sort of way, though it was definitely hard to tell. Joshua was a very stoic and serious person by nature until he let his guard down around you. His guard around Arielle, whilst it may not be as severe as it was with others, was still very much in place. It had taken years for him to trust most of the friends he had. True, he'd fallen into trusting Nell rather quickly, but that was because she saved his life. That was something that couldn't easily be waved away. "I guess it could be useful for decorating too, though." He shrugged again. He didn't know because he was not an Earth elemental. Fire definitely was not good for that sort of thing.
The question caught Joshua off guard and made him stiffen. He didn't like being questioned--it made him far too uncomfortable. This wasn't so personal, however, and seeing as Arielle answered it herself Joshua decided he would consider replying. "I dried paint with it once," he said in a very blasé tone. "It was taking too long to dry on its own." They'd been redecorating his study and Joshua had been impatient to hang the pictures back on the wall and transform his study back into a usable room. So with a sweep of his hand he'd heated the room and sped up the process. "Doesn't matter," he shrugged when she apologised. He didn't really care.

"Indeed," she said as an afterthought. She didn't think they'd have something in common, but they do, apparently. She felt a little irritated that he thought that her protectiveness was amusing, but she let it go. Most people find her seriousness either funny or adorable; both of which she hated with a passion. Yet, she's come to not show how irritated she was with lots of practice with dealing with the insane people.
"That would make sense," she said about his loner comment. "That would mean that you appreciate your friends more, since you don't have that much." She didn't mean to state that as an offence, but as a fact. The more friends someone has, the less they care about all of them. She can say she's a loner at times too, with a few chosen, reliable people to talk to. She didn't want to consider herself not a people person; she's friendly after all. It's just that if she had to choose with hanging out with friends, or being by herself, the latter would be her decision.
"I figured as much," said Ari with a little smirk of her own. She didn't look down on him for those rumors, but she commended they guy. "I don't blame ya. I'd burn those little buggers also if they bothered me." Too bad for Ari her temper tends to get the poor girl in trouble. She then looked at him curiously at his next statement. "Like wha-" Her eyes brightened, then lowered as she blushed. The rumors of him and Nell being together was what he's talking about. She nodded, perfectly understanding the falsehood of them. "Yeah. I know to ignore those. I'm usually the one she tells first about things of that nature." If not, then the girl would have to watch out, for the fury of Ari would be upon her for not telling her something like that.
"Mmm," was her reply to his comment. She couldn't tell if he was serious or not, so she just guessed that he was joking. He has his guard up against her probably, and she didn't blame him for it not one bit. In fact, she's supposed to be the same way, especially with men. But she figured if Nell trusted him, so maybe she could, just a little. "Yeah, it could. My room's filled with flower's galore."
She laughed out loud at his response, loud enough for her laugh to carry down an echo. She then cleared her throat and put on a serious facial expression. "Well, that's very convenient." She laughed mainly because it was indeed the most random thing to use an ability on. "But in all honesty, I'd probably do the same too."
