Ace sighed as he swung his legs over the cliff edge. It was his birthday today, but he was all alone. It was really his fault, he didn't like to tell people about his birthday. When he was a kid on his birthday, a bunch of bullies would usually pull horrible pranks on him, or just beat him up if the pranks didn't suffice. That caused him to have a habit of not telling people it was his birthday. He wanted to go out with his friends today but all, or most of them had to go do something important. He sighed dangling his eyes over the edge, a bottle of wine next to him and a couple of glasses in case anyone decided to join him. How he got the wine? Well he had bought it off of a kid who had smuggled it into the Academy. Ace pulled out his phone to check the time, and he remembered that his sister had called earlier.
Ace's sister had called earlier today to wish him a happy birthday. At least he his sister remembered about his birthday, his parents hadn't even called, though he didn't blame it on them, not entirely. It was the dinner rush at his father's restaurant, and his mom was probably out with her friends. Ace was lonely, he didn't have anyone to spend this day with. He uncorked the bottle of wine and poured himself a glass. "Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me. Happy birthday, happy birthday. Happy birthday to me." He said sadly as he drank. This was really depressing, maybe he should have told someone it was his birthday. Maybe Elaine he wouldn't mind spending his birthday with her. Hell even drinking with Tatyana couldn't be as depressing, though he wasn't sure, she might be even scarier drunk. He swished the wine in his glass before drinking what was left and leaning back looking up at the stars.
He was glad there wasn't any clouds today, he loved to look up at the clear night sky. Especially here where there was no light pollution, no city's just nature. The stars here were so bright, and awe inspiring. The moon was nearly full and it floated staring back at him. He poured another glass of wine, looked up at the moon and toasted. "Here's to you moon. For being here on my very lonely birthday." He said with a laugh before downing the glass of wine. So how old was Ace today? Well he was seventeen, Yea for being a senior he was one of the youngest kids there. He was usually mistaken to be at least 18 but when they found out he was a few years younger they looked surprised. Eh he was an early bloomer, he told those people. He probably was, his father was too.
There's one good thing at having a cook as a father. When he was home he would teach you how to cook amazing dishes. And whenever they cooked together he said that women love a man who could cook. It was an inspiration to him to know how to cook. Then his mom would usually come in, say that it's what got her to marry him, with his father teasing her saying he thought it was his devish good looks. That was how his family was like, there was never many arguments, nor any yelling. Maria and Ace were good kids who did what they were told. Man he missed his family, he was the only element since his great grandfather, on his mom's side. Ace didn't have anyone at home with powers, he was the black sheep of the bunch.
He sighed looking up searching for the familiar constellations of the stars. Lonely Ace started to hum out that old nursery rhyme, the one when you see the first star of the night. He glanced at the big dipper and stared at the north star. "Starlight Star Bright, First star I see tonight, I wish I may I wish I might. Get the wish I wish tonight."

“Oh, gotta see, gotta know right now. What’s that riding on your everything? It isn’t anything at all.”
Nell believed one of the best purchases with her father’s money was the iPod. It was a glorious device, and it took quite a few explanations from her friends to get her to understand how exactly it worked. Technology had never been too kind to her, but she tried her best. Especially since she was developing a love for music. Well, she’d always loved music. But when she was younger and her sister was upset—silent tears because Tilly always felt the need to be the strong one even when she wasn’t—Nell used to create songs and sing to the girl. Now she could actually listen to music, a privelege never available to her before.
It was a part of her freedom, she supposed. Being able to walk along these cliffs was also a part of her freedom. Every day when she was able to move around, to do what she wanted, she thanked whatever higher power there might be. Mostly she just thanked the sky for hanging above her and being so wide open, beautiful even at night. She always looked up there and wodnered what it’d be like to fly, and figured that climbing up the cliffs would be as close as she’d ever get. Of course, climbing the cliffs at night was never a smart idea, but Nell was not known for her prudence. Her life was filled with terrible decisions and reckless behavior.
“Oh, gotta see, gotta know right now. What’s that writing on your shelf? In the bathrooms and the bad motels.”
A shame she didn’t have the best singing voice. No training, no vocal lessons, just a childhood filled with Spanish lullabies invented on short notice. She knew there were quite a few musicians in her family, like her aunt and opera singers of the past, but she didn’t think she inherited the talent gene. She didn’t really think she had any talents. Except when it came to board games and card tricks and folding paper cranes. Well, and her bartending skills. She actually thought it was fun, though she’d rather work at a…nicer bar. Which is why she was looking for a new apartment and a new job. In spite of her lack of talent, she wasn’t going to become a rich jerk who sat on her ass all day and fed off her father’s money. It was merely revenge that she was now doing this. If she didn’t have any money, it would be just as well.
Except she wouldn’t have the glorious device known as the iPod.
“In the motions and the things that you say. It all will fall, fall right into place.”
Then she noticed another voice, not belonging to her. Patting at her hair, making sure the crown of flowers around her head wouldn’t fall off as she walked over in her slightly skipping, teetering gait, she found Ace. “And what wish would that be, Mr. Ace?” she called out, cupping her hands around her mouth before hopping up to him. Looking down, she saw that he had a nice little set-up. “Do I have to report you?” she teased. Yeah, the underage bartender reporting innocent ol’ Ace, how hypocritical. Of course, she didn’t go around flaunting her job. If people asked where she was some nights, she usually just said work—only a select few knew about the bartending job, and a lot of them because they went to the bar while she was on a shift. “So whatcha doing up here all by your lonesome?” Her voice was curious as she tilted her head. Nell plopped herself down next to him, pulling out her earbuds so she could give him her full attention.

Ace sighed sipping at the glass of wine, staring off into space. He sat there thinking about his family, and Lily, and Elaine. He sighed, to be love sick on his birthday, and alone at that. The moon was his company, and everyone was either at their dorms or out about at town. No one was there to drink wine with him, or eat birthday cake with him. Well if he had any birthday cake to eat that is. Maybe he should of had a party of some sort, but then again, he didn't like to throw parties, or be the center of attention for a lot people. Just a few people nothing big, just a small get together, the room filled with friends and family. Damn he was really homesick. He had been homesick a lot of times he was here, but eventually it passed and he was better again. Then when he thought no one would come and discover him, he heard someone singing. The singing wasn't bad but it wasn't amazing. It was good, yea it was good, that's what it was.
The voice got closer and closer, until he heard the voice shout. He knew that voice, it was Nell. He looked up at the stars and he mumbled a "Thank you." raising his glass to them giving them a toast. He smiled at her, "What this Officer?" He said gesturing to the wine, "It's only grape juice." He said putting his glass down. He looked at her pulling out ear buds, "Oh cool did you get a new ipod?" He asked interested. Ace used to have an iPod, but it broke when he accidental dropped it in a puddle. So instead he got a smart phone instead. That way he could listen to music, play games, and text, all with one device. It certainly helped save space in his pockets. He only had to carry around some earbuds, his phone, and a pen and sharpie, and he was set to go. some other things he kept in his pockets would be his pocket knife and his wallet. Plus he had to carry around his car keys so he didn't have to hot wire his car.
"Me?" He asked looking around for someone else, "Well There were forty girls here a minute ago, but I guess they left without even saying goodbye." He said with a sad face. "At least your here on my very lonely birthday. Want a drink?" He said pouring a glass without waiting for an answer. He smiled, at least someone he knew and was friends with was here. Ace poured some more into his glass and offered the new one to her.
He looked down at the lake below, and it was so far down. He gave a lovesick sigh, as he turned towards Nell. "Nell what do you do when you think you love someone?" He asked out of the blue. He asked calmly and with a bit of a sad sigh in there. "And what if they don't love you back?" He asked adding to his original question. The last time he was in love, so was the other person, and they went with that. But it was different this time, she didn't love him back, does he wait? Well waiting seems like the best answer but honestly, maybe he should pursue her instead of wait for her. He sighed drinking some more, feeling the buzz that started as the alcohol mixed with his blood.

Nell looked on curiously as he raised his glass, wondering if there was something wrong. Usually people didn’t hang out on the cliffs with wine. People were allowed to be eccentric, but it didn’t stop her from worrying. A lot. She smiled at his joke. ”I’ll let you off with a warning, then,” she said. She wasn’t one to stop others from having fun. The only thing was that she had to keep an eye on him and make sure he didn’t fall of the ledge if he got a little too tipsy. At the question of the iPod, she waved the device and said, ”Yeah baby.” One of the many things she now owned that represented how she was moving on up. She even had The Jeffersons theme song when she felt in the mood. ”Over two-hundred songs. This thing is my precious.” She lowered her voice to immitate Gollum from Lord of the Rings, chuckling afterward. Everything she bought now she appreciated greatly. It wasn’t like she was turning into a spoiled brat—she appreciated it all.
Nodding as Ace mentioned these girls, she commented with a straight face, ”You now, I think I saw them coming up here. They seemed greatly disappointed.” She drew her head back in surprise when he mentioned it was his birthday. ”Shouldn’t you be out partying till you drop?” she said, then she shook her head with a smile. Picking up the glass, she clinked it against his and said, ”Happy birthday, Ace.” Taking a sip, she scrunched her lips to the side. ”Really, why aren’t you out celebrating?” Not that she ever celebrated her birthday, but that was thanks to the circumstances of her childhood. Then she thought that maybe there was a reason Ace decided to be all alone on this day. Either way, she'd make sure to get him a belated birthday present.
His next question caught her off-guard. Well that was certainly random. She tilted her head, blinking. “Are you drunk?” Nell was only half-joking, her light tone making it apparent. Then, turning her face to the stars above, she considered it seriously. It seemed like Ace was having some love problems, and as his friend, she was going to do her best to help him out. His guy friends would have taken a different approach, though—the punch Ace and ay he’s a pussy approach. Of course, she had zero experience with love and so she wasn’t exactly one to go to for relationship advice. ”Well, I know that there’s a quote about letting love go and if it comes back, it’s yours to keep. But I won’t waste your time with cliches.” What did you do when someone you love didn’t love you back? That was a tough question indeed. ”Well…there’s the art of courtship to win a girl over. But if she loves someone else…” Nell cast him an apologetic smile. ”Then the best thing to do is wish her the best.” Out of curiosity she asked, ”So who’s the girl?”

He smiled at her as they tinked glasses. "Thanks Officer." He said with a chuckle. Ace looked down from the top of the cliff and regretted it a bit. His vision was a little... off. And it bothered him, it was probably the drink he thought to himself. Ah oh well, as long as he could keep his balance and not lean to far over the edge then he'd be fine. He watched her wave the iPod in front of him and he laughed, "Wow that's pretty awesome." He said as he leaned back. Sometimes he missed his old iPod, but he didn't dwell on it too much, he preferred the extra pocket space that came with his smart phone. "Two hundred songs!?" He said a little shocked, "Isn't that like two hundred dollars, or did you illegally download them Miss Officer?" He asked looking down his nose at her, in a mock disapproving way. Everyone did that at least once, and it wasn't really a bad crime. Sometimes you wanted your songs but had no money.
Ace laughed at her comment, "Ah really? That's not what they were saying before!" He said with a laugh playfully nudging stark with his elbow."Nah I do that every other night." He said in response to her question. It was sorta true, recently though he hadn't been going to many parties. Before all the crap happened he was usually crashing parties with his friends every other weekend. It was fun, but sometimes he just wanted to sit quietly on his birthday. Like this, but he didn't want to do it alone. He toasted with her "Thanks Nell." He said with a sincere smile, taking a sip from his cup too. He looked at her and gave a soft smile, "I don't really like having all that attention on me. And I don't tell a lot of people about my birthday out of habit." He said giving a mental shudder to some past birthdays. He remembered getting bullied and pushed around and the birthday punches, ugh the birthday punches, they hurt like hell especially after getting thirty plus.
"What? Me drunk? I only had," Ace paused and counted, then looked at his half done cup gulped it down and then finished his answer, "Four. I think." He said pouring some more wine. Ace looked at her and smiled, he was really glad she had found him, he felt a lot better now that he wasn't alone. He thought of Nell as his sister, and he knew he could talk to her about stuff his guy friends wouldn't want to talk about. For example this, yea he was to embarrassed to go to them about it. He smiled at her suggestion, yea that was cliche like. But it worked in the movies, would it work here? But he couldn't let go, he wanted to hold on for life, to hold on till he had to get amputated to let go. He returned her smile with a sad one, "I hope it doesn't come to that. But if it does," He shrugged not wanting to finish the sentence, there was still hope left, there was still time to fight for her to get her to notice him. Then she asked who the girl was and his face lit up as he thought of the words to describe her. "Well she's a wind girl. She's stubborn, brave, bold, she's strong, and sometimes she can be a bit closed off. She has this hair that floats like a feather when she moves. And when she moves it's like she's gliding over the ground. She's blind, but she's determined." He said every word with a sense of awe, and care. "Her name is Elaine."

Nell gave a two-finger salute to Ace with a serious face. He seemed pretty impressed by her iPod, and she just rolled her eyes playfully. Teenagers these days all had them, she was pretty sure. They had a lot of things she was now just recently obtaining. She didn’t have a cellphone until she came to Canada, so goes to show how much she had in her child. Mocking offense when he suggested they’d been illegal downloads, she protested, ”How could you think I would do anything so detestable!” All of them had actually been completely legal, paid with her father’s money, of course. Ah, the luxuries she now had that she made sure to appreciate every day of her life.
”Wonder why they left then?” she jested. A nice, friendly ribbing. Apparently, he did a lot of partying, which she guessed she could relate to. Even though she was always the responsible one of the group, looing out for people to make sure they didn’t get completely drunk off their asses and get in trouble with the law. But when she got drunk, well…that was not good. She smiled wide as he thanked her. Swirling the wine in her cup, she listened as Ace told her that he didn’t like attention on him. That’s understandable. ”Habit?” she asked, moving her brown eyes to him. Then, knowing how it was similar to why she didn’t tell people her birthday, she said, ”Ah, you don’t have to explain. I get that you don’t like having all this attention on you. It can get overwhelming.” No, she didn’t understand how that felt, actually. It was just another day on the calender for her family. Even when Tilly was alive, birthdays had been…morbid. Because on her birthday, she’d managed to cause her sister’s long and drawn out death.
She lifted her eyebrow as he counted, laughing a bit. ”I’m a bartender, so I must tell you I’m trained in the art of the cut-off,” Nell said, deciding it was okay to tell Ace about her occupation. It wasn’t one of her best kept secrets, anyway. And he wouldn’t be one to snitch. As for cutting him off? Well, if his safety was in danger, then yeah. But she also remembered cutting Josh off, and that didn’t work out too well. Of course, she had to cut-off other people since, but that had been the most memorable of them. Clearly Ace didn’t want to lose whoever this girl was, which was understandle. When you were in love, it was very difficult to consider that person to be with someone else. Especially if you thought you were the best one for them. Nell hadn’t been expecting a full-on description of her, but she listened patiently and with a friendly smile. Then the blind part caught her ear, and she was about to take sip of her wine when she shifted her gaze to him with the glass raised to her lips. Her name. Oh. He loved Elaine. ”Elaine is a…a good friend of mine actually,” she said, lowering the glass and running a finger around the rim. She got it now, why Ace was so heartbroken. ”Do you know…who this other person might be?” If he didn’t know about Elaine’s feelings for Alex, she didn’t want to compromise a secret shared between two girlfriends at a sleepover. That was just cruel. Even if Ace didn’t know, she wouldn’t say who it was that Elaine had her heart on.

Ace thought, a new iPod with two hundred songs on it? That was like maybe three hundred dollars right there. Was Nell rich? She didn't seem like she was. Well she didn't flaunt it around anyways. Ace smiled and looked at her, "Well know I know if I ever have money problems I can come to you." He said jokingly his old iPod had a few hundred songs a few of the illegally downloaded. But getting all those songs took him like three years to get, buying them one at a time instead of in bulk. His smartphone only held a few songs, but they were the ones he listened to the most. A few songs from Rolling Stones, a few from movies, and maybe one or two from video games.
He laughed at her, "I was probably too much for them." He said with a laugh. Ace did do a lot of partying, usually he didn't get too drunk at these parties, but he did get a good buzz from them. Not always, sometimes he had to be the driver and he would only drink sodas. At least when he wasn't drunk hitting on girls was easier, since most often than not, they were drunk too. Then he remembered at one party he was playing Blackjack with his friends and a few drunk people. He won a lot, and he cheated sometimes too. He only managed to get like fifty bucks from it, but it was fifty bucks more than he had before. Parties were always fun, even if you weren't drunk, it was fun just watching the other drunk people. They did a lot of stupid stuff.
"Yea." He said agreeing with her point about all the attention. That was only partly the truth, he didn't want to get pranked or anything on his birthday. Back before he got his powers he didn't really have parties. Maybe one when he was like four, but after that he didn't really like having them. He preferred to have a small party with his family, and maybe just head to a restaurant for his birthday. He hated it though when his parents said it was his birthday and then the staff sang, oh god that was just horrendous.
He looked at Nell impressed, that she was a bartender. "Well Barkeep make sure you cut me off before I start taking clothes, off. You might not be able to control yourself." He said with a laugh. Well he did want her to cut off before he did something stupid. She was a bartender, well that was pretty awesome. He always thought bar tending was a cool job, and like in the movies or something, they were good advice givers. Sometimes he thought maybe he should become a bartender, but he didn't want to get another job. Then he thought to himself, it must suck to cut off angry drunks. "So Nell what's being a Bartender like?" He asked curiously.
"Really she is?" He said out loud. "Tell her I said hey next time you see her." He said with a happy sigh. Then she asked if he knew who the other person was, and his spirits fell just a little bit. "I thought so." He said with a frown, so she did have another person in her life. He guessed that when she said Not you too. That was a while ago but he still remembered that night pretty clearly. "No, I don't know who he is, but I knew there might have been someone." He said downing another glass.

”I’m your woman,” Nell said with a thumbs up. ”Seriously, if you do have any problems, I’ll be more than willing to give you the money.” It wasn’t hers, after all, and therefore she could be as wanton as she liked. Oh my god, you’re a terrible person. But she reminded herself, as she always did, why she was doing this to the man—he abandoned her and thought he could fix it with his money? Fine. She’d let him think that. And she’d spend all of his money in the same time.
Nell took a few moments to finish off the glass of wine, then set it down beside her, leaning back with on her arms to gaze up at the sky. She wondered if she’d pull an Ace on her own birthday. Probably not. She’d just go around acting like it was any other day. Hang out with friends, probably, but she might even get herself a birthday cake. Hey, it was food. Even thinking about it made her feel pathetic. Honestly, she just didn’t want to celebrate her birthday when she should be celebrating it with Tilly. It felt wrong.
”Oh, I’m sure I’ll be able to resist.” Though she couldn’t say how many times she’d seen someone at the bar strip off their clothes—Nell would mostly just laugh. She bit her lip as she thought about it. It would be awesome if it was more like Coyote Ugly or Cocktail, but her life wasn’t a movie and the pay was crap, though now that wasn’t something she had to worry about. Nell kept her job because she didn’t want to be a lazy rich bitch—or rather, more of a bitch than she’d already become. She always wondered what her friends like Ace would think of her if she ever revealed what she was doing ot her father. They’d probably not want to be friends with her anymore, thinking they’d judged her completely wrong. After a moment, she said ”It can be fun. It’d be better if I didn’t work at a crapsack bar, but you learn a lot of interesting things.” Like how to juggle bottles and mix drinks, though the former was learned from movies—awesomeness by analysis, one could say.
Nell lifted an eyebrow as she heard Ace sigh. ”Don’t worry, I will.” Poor guy, she didn’t want to crush his heart by saying that Elaine really liked this guy, even though he most likely knew. She didn’t know how much the blind girl had told him, but it was enough to make him feel pretty down in the dumps. ”Yeah, well…I’ve never seen a love triangle before save in the movies, so I…I wish I could help you out more.” This was honest. She felt sort of pathetic that she couldn’t offer more advice, but her love life was equally as pathetic so it made sense. She refilled their glasses, and held hers up saying, ”I have another cliché for ya. There’s other fish in the sea.” She lifted her glass up in a sort of toast before taking a sip, and then said, ”I hate to see you this way, Ace. Is there anything else I can do? Go and get some food, maybe?” Because Nell knew all the world’s problems could be solved with food.

Ace laughed, "Alright I'm holding you up on that." He said with a smirk. Nah he wouldn't really go to her for money, it was a pride thing. I mean sure he could mooch off of someone for food or staying the night, but he didn't like asking for money. IT was a little quirk of his. He just liked to have his own money and earn it himself, he couldn't just go ask for some. It felt like begging, and Ace didn't like to beg. So unless it was really desperate he wouldn't ask for money.
Maybe next year he should go out with some friends. Or actually throw a party, that seemed like an idea. It's not like he could get bullied anymore, he was one of the strongest kids in the school. At least he thought he was, he only lost to a few kids who were not only thunder, but were also bigger and stronger than him. But he didn't want a big party. Maybe he would just have a small one with his actual friends there. Maybe he'd take them out somewhere, like go kart racing, that wasn't too juvenile was it?
Ace smiled, "An innocent soul can't resist my devilish charms." He said grinning at her. What was working as a bartender like? I mean in a lot of movies or shows or media the bartender was usually the guy or girl who gave out really good advice in a time of need. Like in Anchorman, that was the only thing that came to his mind at the moment. Ha Anchorman, that was a really funny movie. He smiled at the thought. "What kind of stuff did you learn?" He asked curiously, he wanted to know. "Maybe you can teach me something." He said with a grin.
Ace smiled and gave her a nod of thanks. He hadn't been or seen any other love triangles besides in anime or manga or movies, or any other form of entertainment. And now he was in one. Well that's how fate worked. "Hey it's alright, I'll figure it out along the way." He said ruffling her hair like a big brother would. He smiled at another of her cliche's and sipped from his refilled glass after giving her's a toast. "Well Besides food, why don't you tell me, is there anyone you like?" He said with a teasing smile. Food huh? Well he could go out and eat later, right now he liked to just sit around and drink some good wine.

”Oh, so I’m innocent, am I?” Yes, in one way she was, but for everything else, such was not true. She was probably less innocent than Ace, if he hadn’t killed anyone lately. But when speaking in…sexual terms, she was as innocent as you got. But she couldn’t help but think of some of the things her mother did, the times she carved words into her skin like ‘whore’ and ‘bitch’ and even though Nell chose to clear her thoughts of those memories—but never completely, the remnant would remain—there are the faint scars of those letter. She took a large drink. Yeah, she didn’t think she could show anyone her body. ”There’s a lot of tricks I can do to get more tips, like tin tricks where you flip bottles around.” She tapped her chin as if thinking, and then said, ”I don’t know, young one, it takes years of mastery. If you think you are ready for it, then I may teach you the ways of the bartender.” In actuality, it wasn’t too hard, but it did take a while to get things right. And in the beginning there was a lot of broken bottles, which wasn’t very good, considering how much she hated broken glass.
She gave a mock confused look. ”Wait, I thought I could marry food!” Shaking her head, she muttered, ”I’ve been lied to my entire life.” Deciding to take his question more seriously now, she leaned back a bit, scrunching her lips to the side. ”Nope, there isn’t anyone. I’m enjoying my single swag, ya know?” What she wasn’t saying was how totally inexperienced she was when it came to even simple schoolgirl crushes. She’d never had one before, never been attracted to anyone else, so she didn’t even know what it was like to have feelings like that for another person. When the right one comes along, maybe then I’m know…? Yeah, she was really loving these clichés. ”Hey, let’s toast to being single. Love is just too darn complicated. All we need is good booze and friends.”
After holding up her glass in a salute, she said, ”You know, if you really wanna learn some tricks, I can take you to the bar. I have a shift tonight, anyway.” Nell took her phone out from her bac pocket and checked the time. Wow, it was sooner than she thought. She just wanted to come up to the cliffs for some relaxation time before she had to head out to Maple Hollow, but it looked like she only had an hour left. Which was just as well, considering she was technically already dressed, and her apron was already at the bar. ”But I must warn you, I have the most hideous car in the existence of transportation.” It was almost embarrassing for her to have that bulky PT Cruiser. Whenever she gave someone a ride, she wondered if they wished they didn’t have to be seen in a car like that.

Ace grinned at her, "Yep your as innocent as an angel, and as pure as a virgin bride." He said with a laugh. He stumbled over his words a little, and he knew he was drunk now. Sure Nell was innocent, but the same couldn't be said for Ace. Him, well he was the virgin bride's husband, the guy who slept around. Sure Ace had been with a lot of women, had slept with a few, but not all. He didn't like to have girlfriends, so usually him and his chosen were just making out in a dark corner at a party. Sometimes it escalated over that, but not always. "Flipping bottles doesn't sound very hard." He said with a raised eyebrow, how hard could it be? Ace grinned at her starwars jedi masterness. "Well master, I believe I'm ready." He said with a serious face. It couldn't be too hard. It's like doing magic tricks, they looked impossible, but in actuality there was just a simple move, with a lot of flair.
He laughed, "Sure you could marry Mr. Doughnut, and then Become Mrs. Doughnut but one day Mr. Doughnut ends up missing, all that's left of him is crumbs and a little jelly." He said lying down on the ground, staring up at the sky. At the stars and the darkness. "Really? Well I promised my friend that if you didn't have anyone in mind, I'd tell you he thought you were cute." He said at her. It was true, one of his friends thought that Nell was pretty cute. Of course he himself was shy and had no confidence whatsoever, so he wouldn't even approach her. He gave a small half grin, "To bachalorism!" He said toasting her. Yea love was complicated, friends and booze was simple, but sometimes you had to take the complicated approach. Sometimes it broke you, but what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, no?
"You have a shift tonight?" He said repeating what she just informed him. "I mean yea I'll come with you." He said getting up, but he was drunk and he stumbled a little, nearly off the edge, but he gained his balance in time, "You'll have to help me down though." He said with a chuckle. Well looks like she was driving him there. He was glad, because he wouldn't trust himself right now. Nah not with that many glasses of wine. He laughed. "It's gotta be better than my car. My car doesn't even lock. I'm just glad it looks so ugly no one would try to steal it." He said with a laugh. And that's only one of the few problems, for one the radio didn't work, there were a few dents and missing scratches, and there were patches where there was no paint. Yea it was hideous but he still loved it.

Nell laughed too, but more of a ‘oh my god, he is getting so drunk right now’ laugh. Instead of focusing on his slurred speech, she thought of how less-than-innocent she always felt. She wondered if Ace really thought that of her, even when he was sober. Did she give off an angelic vibe? Did she really seem innocent? Because that’s not what she felt whenever she thought about herself—she believed she was the impurest soul there ever was, and that didn’t even mean sexually. She just felt like a terrible person most of the time. ”Well, I’m not about to let you go flipping bottle unsupervised, Mr. Superman,” she said, recalling a conversation of theirs, one that occurred earlier in the war. Yeah, she didn’t think Superman here would be faring so well with shards of glass stuck in his hands. ”Well if you think you really are ready…” she said this slowly, as if considering. Nell wouldn’t mind taking him under her wing at all.
She couldn’t help but crack up at the whole donut thing, shaking her head. Oh god, he was already pretty damn smashed. ”I would never eat my husband!” she said, as if accusing Ace of thinking that she’d do such a terrible thing. Nell couldn’t help but blush at his next comment, and inwardly scolded herself for behaving like a little schoolgirl. Still, it was flattering to know that someone out there thought you were cute. Even if you had to disagree, even if you thought that no matter who they were, you wouldn’t be a good person for them. ”Well, tell him thank you, but Nell Doe Shepherd is strutting her single swag.” She winked at him, and moved around a little, as if showing off this ‘single swag’ of hers. Yes, to bachelorism. It was a freeing state of mind. But honestly, if she let her defenses down and thought about it, it’d be nice to have someone who you love and who loves you back. It would be great, actually.
Nodding in the affirmative, she smiled. ”Great!” A little wary about bringing him to a bar when he was already pretty much shit faced, her concerns intensified when he sumbled as he stood. She quickly stood and brushed herself off, slipping an arm around his waist and placing his own on her shoulder. ”Like you have a broken ankle or something,” she said wryly, helping him down the cliffs. She burst out laughing when he mentioned his car. ”Trust me, when I had my Monte Carlo, it’s ugliness was the only thing that kept it from being stolen. I know exactly what you mean.” It was true. Living downtown, she was always fearful of going down to the parking lot and discovering the car perched atop cinderblocks. She couldn’t even restore it or anything since it wasn’t a classic. Though, in the future when she did have enough money and her Lambo, she’d love to take a classic muscle car and restore it. But she didn’t think she’d ever drive that baby around, considering she’d be afraid it would get scratched or dented.
She helped him into the car she owned now and it wasn’t too long of a drive to Maple Hollow. The bar was already busy, and she led Ace around back. ”Let me give you a tour,” she said as she led them through the storage area. ”This is storage…and this is the bar.” Nell finished with a chuckle as she led him up to her working area. She wondered if he had ever been behind the bar. ”Nell, can’t have that kid back here,” the bartender who was usually on shift with her said as he got ready for his own shift. As she wrapped the apron around her waist, she said, ”Just duck under there and take a seat at the bar.” The place she designated was the little door that the bartenders use to get in and out. Going about her bartender duties—cleaning off the counter and organizing her little utensils—she asked, ”What would you like to see me do first?”

"What Lex it can't be that hard." He said picking up the mostly empty wine bottle and stuck the cork in the top. He tested it's weight then he tossed it into the air flicking it with his wrist. The bottle spun in the moonlight and it started coming down. Ace put his hand out to catch it, but in his drunken state he couldn't close his hand to grab hold of it in time. The bottle bounced out of his hand and down the cliff face, spinning and spinning. Ace leaned over the edge of the cliff to see what happened to it, and then he heard a splash. "Well at least it's in the lake." He said in a carefree voice. Someone would probably find it, a nearly finished bottle of wine corked and floating out in the middle of the lake. Well it's not like anyone would dust for fingerprints on it. "Yes master I am totally ready!" He said saluting.
Ace grinned a very immature grin. He leaned in close to her and smiled, "That's what you think." He said implying idiocy. He hadn't been this immature since freshman year. And every other time he got smashed, which wasn't much. He noticed the little blush on Nell's face and decided to give her a little tease. "Aww Nell are you blushing?!" He said with a grin. "That's pretty cute." He said with a laugh. He laughed at her single strut, and decided, yea being single was a good thing, but sometimes you needed a little love from someone else, being alone wasn't fun. It wasn't fun at all.
He grinned "Nah I just wanted you close to me." He said squeezing her shoulder. He smiled at her comment about her old car. "You know, I'm thinking of selling my car for a motorcycle. Cause they are awesome." He said with a determined grin. Yea a motorcycle, that would be one amazing thing to get. Maybe a cheap one at first, but he would want a Ducati, that would be really nice. He wanted something that went fast, and something that caught your eye. He wanted some neon on his bike so when he zoomed past you would see a blur of color on a dark night. Hopefully he would get enough money for that kind of thing.
Ace grinned and gave the respective oohs and aahs any tourist would when visiting any new place. He looked at the other bartender and oohed and ahhed, being an idiot he gave the guy a grin and a wave. Nell directed him to the little door that the bartenders use. And he went through it. Of course he forgot that they open up so he actually ducked under it. As he got up he banged his head against it pretty hard. "Ahh you little piece of-" Ace calmed himself and rubbed the back of his head taking the seat that was in front of Nell. He rubbed his head as he watched her dilly dally around the bar. "Um I have no idea, surprise me." He said shrugging.

Nell watched with a worried gaze as he attempted to do a trick of his own with the wine bottle. He tossed it into the air and she leaned over, ready to catch it if he missed. But the bottle ended up falling down to the lake, and she snorted. ”Can’t be the hard, huh?” she said, looking at him in a teasing manner. ”My inner green freak as an Earth student greatly disapproves.” But she wasn’t just about to tell him to go down and fish it out of the lake. That’d be incredibly stupid and dangerouns, needless to say, not even something that she would do. Ace saluted to her and she rolled her eyes. ”My students are not allowed to say words like ‘totally’. They only speak in pirate voices.” She wondered if he’d actually believe her with how drunk he already was.
She tried to hold back her smile by forcing her mouth into a frown, but really, she couldn’t help but grin at him and his drunkenness. Nell felt like a terrible person whenever she laughed at people who got completely smashed, usually at parties, but when it came down to it if they got themselves into trouble, she’d be the one to help them out of it. ”You’re right, with my appetite, it’ll happen sooner or later,” she said ruefully. At his teasing, she stuck her tongue out and said, ”I’ll show you cute when I go Lex Luther on your butt and try to take over the world.” She reached over to wrap her arm around his neck, grounding her knuckles into his head in a noogie. Of course, she was not strong enough to make anything like that hurt, but most still cried uncle to get her off of them.
Nell rolled her eyes, poking him in the stomach with her free hand. ”Getting frisky, are we?” she said. Grinning at his motorcycle comment, she said ”Bikes are pretty sexy. I don’t think I’d be able to resist you if I saw you on one.” In truth, the real way to her heart—other than through her stomach—was with a car. She loved them so much that she didn’t think motorcycles could ever compare. Sure, they were cool, but they were also too…small for her. To each their own, though, even though her mechanic heart stuck by her cars forever and always.
It was terrible, but she couldn’t help but crack up at Ace, burrying her head in her arms as she leaned against the counter to stifle the laughter. Regaining her composure, Nell sighed and shook her head with a smile, leaning against the bar. ”I see there is a lot I have to teach you, young padawan.” She took out a glass and filled it with ice cubes before reaching underneath the bar. Pulling out the rum and tequila first, she flipped the bottle of rum up before pouring it into the glass, and tossed the bottle of tequila behind her back before putting it into the same glass. With those two done, she put them back under the bar with lightning speed and next to come out was the vodka and gin, which went through similar tricks before being poured into the glass. Finally, Blue Curacao and sweet and sour came, finished off with 7-Up. It was one of the mixes she was most proud of when she pulled off correctly, since she could only guess at the amount she was pouring in while flipping bottles around. ”Like Tom Cruise, baby,” she said, referencing a movie she wasn’t even sure he’d seen. Nell pushed the glass over to him and said, ”Adios motherfucker.” She didn’t apologize for the foul language, since mixed drinks tended to have the oddest names. ”And I’m not saying that just because it’s the name. That will probably be your last drink of the night. Consider it a birthday present.”

"It's only cause I'm drunk." He said matter-o-factly. "I could'a caught that bottle if I didn't have any wine." He said confidently. He grinned at her, "Don't worry knowing the kids at this school someone will fish it out." He said with a grin. Someone more than likely would end up fishing it out just for the wine. He smiled at her then replied with a piraty accent "Aye aye Captain!" He said squeezing one eye shut and his right pointer finger in the shape of a hook.
Ace was totally caught off guard by the noggie attack. Instead of saying uncle uncle he yelled out. "That tickles!" He said smiling. He decided he would counter attack. His sister used to put him in noogies when he bothered her too much. So he learned to counterattack by tickling her side. Ace did that to Nell trying to tickle her enough to let him go. He tickled her sides but the position he was in was a little uncomfortable. He was shorter when his sister noggied him, and she was taller.
"They are sexy, but if I somehow get enough money I want a Grand Torino, or a Mustang, or umm That car from Back to the Future." He said pausing to think about the name. "Oh yea it's the Delorian." He said with a smile. "I just love it dude, it looks soo awesome." He said happily day dreaming about the car. Sure bikes were amazingly fast and dreamy, but the Delorian, oh God the Delorian. That was his dream car, even if it didn't look as fancy as a Lambo, or as muscled up as a Mustang, but that car had soul, and it was awesome in the movies too. His second favorite car though, that would have to be a Mustang. "Though I think a bike is cheaper than buying one of those." He said with a half smile.
"Hey it really hurt!" he said rubbing the back of his head. A big ol' bump would end up there tomorrow. But then he watched her do her flips and tricks, mixing the drinks, it was like Coyote ugly or something. He watched her with awe and admiration. When she ended and pushed the drink towards him all he could say was, "That was really, really hot." He said closing his mouth. He looked at the drink with the odd name, "It's that strong?" He asked picking the drink up. Than warily he took a gulp from it. Oh God it was like fire in his throat. But it was like a cleansing fire, it was a good fire, it tasted amazing. If he wasn't wasted before he was now. "I'm gonna end up with a huge hangover tomorrow." He said picking up the drink again, taking a small drink from it. Damn that tasted good.
