[We're going to ignore that I promised to start this six bajillion years ago and only got to it now, mmkay? Also I decided to actually make it at the hospital, hope you don't mind (:]
"Joshua."
The voice from the doorframe made him look up, slipping his headphones down around his neck so that he could better understand what his father had to say. Then, wincing a little as if he thought he was being rude--even though Donovan hadn't even knocked to give warning--he closed the laptop completely, turned off the sound, unplugged the headphones and gave the older man his full attention. "Dad. What's up?" Gray eyes met gray for a moment, and the younger of the two broke eye contact nervously. He always felt like he was staring down a charging bull when he spoke with his father, even when like now there appeared to be no cause for concern.
"I'm going to the hospital in a while. Are you coming?"
Joshua turned bright red and ducked his head at the caustic tone. "Oh, I, uh--"
"You forgot."
"Uh... yeah," Josh admitted grudgingly, mentally slapping himself. He'd offered to help out with volunteer work at the hospital, something he'd often done in previous years to gain credit for future college applications. He wanted to go to medical school, after all, so what better place to volunteer than a hospital? That had all kind of fell through once his father had fought with him, but Josh had agreed to start helping out again once they'd somewhat reconciled. The war was one of the most distracting things he'd ever went through, however, and he'd completely, well, forgotten that he'd agreed to go. His father frowned at him. "That's what I thought," he said disapprovingly. "If you plan to remember any time soon, I'd suggest grabbing something to eat before we hit the road. We could be gone for a while."
Donovan didn't have to yell. Hell, he didn't have to so much as raise his voice to make his son feel like he was being ridiculed. Joshua was submissive as always, dipping his head with a quiet, "Of course." No words were swapped between them even as they shared a kitchen, Joshua packing a couple of sandwiches in case hunger gnawed at him during the day. Shifts were long in his fathers hospital, and seeing as he'd be relying on the man for a ride home, his 'shift' would be as well. There was a similar lack of conversation on the drive there, his father's only words being, "You can start here," before they parted ways. He'd indicated an empty room that needed prepping in case a patient showed up. Boring work, but he had agreed to it.
Josh sighed a little, wondering if there were any other volunteers around today. He didn't usually talk to them, but sometimes the company was good to make the hours pass quicker.

Ace smiled at the little girl in front of him. "You'll be fine. Your a brave girl right?" He said to the little blond kid. She nodded her head bravely "Yea I'm a strong girl!" she announced to him. "Yep and you'll be fine. It'll be over before you know it okay."He said with a smile on his face. The girl smiled and giggled. He had gotten to the hospital earlier than most of the volunteers mostly because he had to get away from the school. He needed some air that wasn't filled with the crackle of thunder or the smell of the constantly moving wind. He wanted some nice peaceful air and he came here to get it. The girl in front of him was only 7 and had been diagnosed with Leukemia. She was getting ready to go into chemotherapy and Ace had been talking to her for an hour getting her mind off of the coming situation.
The doctor walked in and looked up at Ace. "Ace can you go help prep the room down the hall?"
Ace nodded before looking back at the little girl. "Okay Lucy you be a brave girl alright?" She happily nodded "Yea I'll be brave!" She said putting her hands on her hips. He laughed as he walked away hoping nothing went wrong.
Ace walked slowly to the room he needed to go to just thinking about what he would do after he left the hospital. He mused on going to that cafe a few blocks down. But he decided he would figure it out later. Ace walked into the room and discovered a slightly familiar face. "Hey. Have I seen you before?"

Hospitals were always so clean, so white, so sterile. It could drive you insane if you were stuck here for too long, he mused, for it almost resembled an asylum with its orderliness. His ambitions were to work here some day, but he could only imagine how terrible it must be for the terminally ill patients. Knowing that these walls would be the last thing you'd ever see must be a nightmare. The hell are you being so depressing? he scolded himself. Truth was, this was was making him view everything through a haze of negativity. It was hard to focus on the positive things any more because there was barely any positivity of which to speak. He sighed and rinsed his hands in the sink, letting the scalding water against his skin burn away all of the germs and whatnot, along with the sterilizing solution that he'd rubbed into them.
Dealing with the needles was the worst part. He felt his breath catch in his throat as he laid eyes on them, their sharp tips seeming to mock him as they glinted in the light. His hands suddenly felt cold and clammy and he really didn't want to touch the sharp objects. What if... what if his hand slipped and he pricked his finger? Even the thought of the fine tip burrowing into his fingertip made his stomach reel. Nauseous, he gripped the edge of the counter and focused on breathing slowly, in and out. It's okay, he tried to convince himself even though he felt dizzy and sick. You won't prick your finger, it'll be fine. He managed to talk himself down a little, but he still moved very slowly as he picked up the objects and started to dispose of them. Ace walked into the room just then, but Josh didn't so much as spare him a glance--he was too busy taking care of his task. To an outsider, it wasn't clear that the objects in his hands terrified him. He was just being oddly quiet, but for Joshua, 'quiet' was more normality than oddity.
He tossed the needles away and turned just as the other boy spoke to him, gray eyes narrowing critically. At first glance Josh appeared guarded, but perhaps not unfriendly. The critical stare was merely because he was trying to decide if he knew this boy or not. "Maybe. Do you attend the Academy?" Even if the guy didn't, it was safe to mention 'the Academy' as long as you didn't call it Academy of the Elements. To outsiders, it appeared to be a school for the gifted--whether it be in literature, art, maths, or music. And they were gifted of course, just in ways different to what most assumed. Joshua always insisted that it was his intelligence and the reputation of his parents that gained him admission, whenever he was asked by a family contact that didn't know.
Then he hesitated a little. "Or maybe I know you from the hospital," he mused. "How long have you been volunteering? You look somewhat familiar." He had missed several months of volunteer work once he'd started fighting with his father, but he'd always showed up at the hospital to help out before that. He'd prep rooms, talk to patients, and sometimes get things for those that were unable to get up and walk around themselves. To the elderly patients he was especially polite and helpful. Maybe it was because of the lady who'd saved his life the first time he'd nearly met his end thanks to the gang.

Ace looked up at the boy in the room, he took a sniff and he could usually get a hint of what element the person was in but all he smelled was the overpowering clean smell. He listened to the boy's question. He grinned cause he knew the guy was from the school. "I like what these guys," He said talking about the non gifted, "call the Academy. The Academy of the Gifted, sounds like the school from X-men." He said with a laugh
He hoped that the guy got the reference else it would turn out pretty awkward. He was a small nerd, he loved the comics and the superheroes. He was a big nerd but he didn't really show it. Most girls didn't like the nerds but he used his nerdiness to try and seem awkward and cute. One of his methods to get girls
He thought back to how long he had been volunteering at the hospital, It was probably since he was a sophomore when he needed stuff for his resume. "Um for about three years I think." He said answering his question. "What about you how long have you been volunteering?" He asked with a curious look on his face.

Joshua furrowed his brow and frowned in confusion when Ace sniffed the air. The hell? Josh thought, a little freaked out by the dude. "Are you... sniffing me?" That was just one of the strangest things he'd ever had to deal with before. It was almost animalistic behaviour and he wondered for a moment if the kid was actually a patient rather than a volunteer. "You wouldn't have wandered over here from Wing Three, would you?" he asked dead seriously, naming the psych ward where all of the mentally affected patients stayed. "Because if you're lost I can totally, y'know, help, or something." It felt suddenly awkward after a moment, because what if he was in denial or something?
He was still quite wary as Ace confirmed that he was a student of the Academy. A crazy student? He was still pretty sold on the fact that this kid might have some sort of mental problems. "I wouldn't know," he shrugged nonchalantly when Ace said that he was reminded of X-Men, "I've never seen it." He was into more serious and literal things. Of course, you could also get him to watch a comedy if he was with friends or family and in the mood to laugh, but for the most part documentaries were his thing. "Better they call it that than find out about us." He shrugged, clearly not taking it in as much of a joking tone as he had meant it.
Three years. Less than Joshua himself, but that was only because Josh had a father who worked here and so he'd helped out some even before he'd started officially volunteering. Was he even going to believe that Ace was a volunteer? I still don't get the sniffing thing... He pushed the thought aside and answered, "Quite a while." About five years if he remembered correctly, around the time when he started highschool and started seriously considering the idea of becoming a doctor. "I haven't been back for a bit, but it certainly hasn't been a three year absence. Maybe you have seen me around." He shrugged again, non-committal as always. "Name's Josh. I'm a Fire elemental." Which to Ace might clue him in to the fact that they were 'enemies' in the war if he didn't know about the side-switching on Josh's part. Though they were outside of school now, so would it even matter?

Ace turned red when he mentioned the sniffing. "Oh crap. Sorry it's this habit I have. I um I have this really sensitive nose and I can smell like really well. I use it to um see what element a person is." He said with the lame, but true, excuse. "You see the more a person uses their power the more they smell like their element. For example a fire student smells like, well a fire or smoke." He said gesturing. It was this old habit he developed when he realized he could smell people's elements. It was good to figure out whether one was a enemy or a friend especially during a war. When he brought up wing three he shook his head "No I'm totally sane. Perfectly fine." He said with an awkward laugh.
Ace let out a disappointed oh this moment just got more awkward than it was before. "Y-yea its nice to let them think I'm a genius." He said with a smile. He liked to be thought of a genius.
Ace nodded "Yea I think I've seen you around." He said as he decided to busy himself. He changed the sheets on the bed. He tightened up as he said he was a fire element. "Nice to meet you Josh, I'm," Ace turned to shake his hand when he accidentally knocked over a vase full of water and flowers. Ace being him with his quick boxer reactions grabbed caught the vase and the water. He put it back in the vase along with the flowers. "I'm Ace, Water." He said defensively, he also hoped that his reputation had preceded him being the kid who posted the challenges at school.

Joshua blinked at him. Slowly. "Um..." That was more than just a little strange. He understood that Elaine had a brilliant sense of smell because she was blind, but this boy was completely and totally ordinary from what he could tell. "Right..." It made sense, he supposed, it was just still very odd and alien to him. He knew that the Fire elementals sometimes smelled like smoke and the Earth students like fragrant flowers, but he'd never actually tried to guess someone's element by smelling them before. "You know, there's a thing called 'asking'," he said, "and it might help next time you want to come off as normal." Especially in a hospital with a fucking psych ward nearby.
It really was nice to have people marvel at your status as an Academy student, like you were someone special because of your 'talents'. But it was nothing compared to how envious people would be if they really knew what went on behind the big dark gates. "I suppose that is nice." He had always gotten good grades thanks to the almost inhuman amount of time he spent hitting the books. If he wasn't sleeping, eating, or spending time with his very minimal list of friends, Josh likely had his nose in a book. He was hardly ever content to just sit down in front of the television. He always had to be off doing something productive.
"--clumsy, apparently," Joshua finished for him, blinking at the mess the other boy had made. Whilst Ace was changing the sheets, Joshua busied himself with wiping down the counters and making sure they were absolutely disinfected. He didn't mind cleaning as much as most did, probably because he'd gotten so accustomed to it when it came to his apartment. He liked the clean smell of the disinfectant as well, but he wasn't going to stop and sniff it or anything. "Ah," he said. "A Water student." This could get awkward. He didn't usually get along with them. "Why a hospital?" he decided to ask, steering the subject away from elements for the moment. He was asking why Ace had chosen to volunteer here as opposed to a fair or something.

Ace shrugged, “Sometimes asking isn’t possible.” He said as he sat down onto one of the chairs looking for something to busy himself with. He thought of examples of how sometimes asking just wasn’t possible. In a fight maybe, or when you were trying to avoid someone. He mentally shook his head and ran a hand through his messy bed head hair. Hell if Josh thought he was crazy then whatever. He acted weird like that anyways. Sometimes he thought the crazy ones were the ones with the sanity.
Ace wasn’t a great student, he had a B+ average and he only got that because he was good at taking tests. He barley paid attention in class and got most of his notes off of his friends. Sure if he applied himself he could probably get straight As but in the end, he was lazy, and he was fine with B+.
Ace was a little more guarded now that he knew that Josh was a fire kid. There was a war going on at the moment and he didn’t really trust fire kids. But he could tell that he was a smart guy and wouldn’t start a fight here. “Because I like to help people. I like to help them get better and, I dunno reassure them I guess.” Ace volunteered at the hospital because it was something he knew he could do to help others stay alive. To help save them, he knew he wasn’t doing t he big stuff like doing surgery, or issuing life saving drugs but it’s the small things that count. “What about you?”

Joshua just arched an eyebrow. What the fuck was that supposed to mean? Alright, so if you were getting literal about this whole situation then maybe there would be exceptions. But Joshua and Ace were just standing in a room together. What was so strange about that, strange enough that Ace would rather sniff him than make a simple inquiry? "It wouldn't be impossible now," he pointed out, narrowing gray eyes a little. He was a rather serious person when he wasn't in a good mood and with his friends, which unfortunately for Joshua was almost all of the time. He was usually in a neutral if not bad mood, and friends? He didn't have many of those to brag about.
Apparently Ace was into this whole hospital business because he liked to help people. Seemed a bit of a cliché and cheesy answer, but hell, maybe he actually was. Joshua would never know the feeling because he wasn't empathetic by nature. "Ah," was his response, not really having anything else to say. He'd never had that sharp tug of the heartstrings that a lot of aspiring doctors felt. It wasn't to say he'd rather have them die, he was just in this for a different reason than Ace. Not only was he interested in the illnesses rather than the patients who had them, but his father was a doctor. And Josh wanted to be just like Daddy dearest. "You pretty much hit the nail on the head," he lied with an easy shrug when Ace returned the question. "I don't like to see others suffer. It interested me, so I went for it. And here I am."
It was almost alarming how easily he could lie now. He'd spent a great deal of his childhood lying to his parents and he spent more of his years at the Academy lying about... well, everything, really. He just wasn't an honest person. Not wanting to fall into an awkward silence when they were both stuck in a room together, Joshua cast around for another subject. His mind rested on the war and he almost wanted to hit something--why was that always on the forefront of his mind? Still, it was something. "So whose side are you on?" It wasn't even a question of what he was referring to. Right now he was pretty sure every elemental at the school would know. "Did you know her? Know Cyn?"

Ace shrugged “No I guess it wouldn’t. Oh well.” He said with a shrug. Ace decided to drop the subject the guy wasn’t in a good mood and well it seemed to be aggravating him on why he sniffed people. Whatever let the guy think he was crazy it didn’t matter to Ace. He had his friends and they knew he was lazy but not crazy. Damn this guy is serious, jokes probably wouldn’t work with him.
Ace raised a questionable eyebrow. “Interesting.” He said, he didn’t expect this guy to be very caring or not like to see other suffer. I mean if you were human you wouldn’t like to see others suffer but still this guy looked more like a stony indifference guy than a care for those who were hurting. He shrugged letting the silence fill the air.
Ace looked up at him asking about his allegiance. When the war started he was a neutral kid not really worried, but then he decided he would protect Nell. Why, well for a few reasons. One was that she was his friend and another was that he protected her because she was like a little sister to him. “I’m with Nell.” He said protectively. If Josh wanted to fight Ace would hope he would wait till after they got out of the hospital. “And about Cyn, I saw her once or twice, she was,” He paused thinking of a word but decided a phrase was better, “Something else.” Nell told him not to speak ill of the dead and he listened to her. Of course he meant something else in the bad way. “We can fight about this once we get out of the hospital.” He said assuming since Josh was fire, he was with the fire element. Why wouldn’t he be with them?

Joshua narrowed his eyes critically at Ace when he spoke of fighting. It was a good thing that he had a handle on his powers else he might have gotten enraged due to Ace suggesting that he wanted a fight. It's perfectly normal for your former enemies to not realise you're on their side now, he coached himself. No heat swept through the room, because Joshua was trying to be responsible and hold back the burst of anger that seemed to be flaring up in his chest. He probably heard from everyone else that Fire elementals are bastards, and it's not like I'm staying in the Water dormitories. Ugh, heck no! He couldn't stand the Water dorms, with their glass ceiling and the threat of an entire lake dropping onto your head. His hydrophobia wouldn't even allow him to step into the dormitories when he'd been about to mess around with a hot girl in his grade. That 'date' had been called off pretty quick.
"Who said I wanted to fight about it?" Though he was trying not to sound too irate, there was still a definite edge of challenge in Joshua's voice. "Besides, it's dangerous to make a public show of our powers. If you did want a fight, I'd tell you to wait until we got back to the school." Joshua had experienced a couple of close calls with his powers in the past. He'd accidentally shown them off in public--minor incidents, but that drew enough attention to him that the cops got involved. It had scared him because the government were suddenly interested in him and he'd been terrified that they were going to arrest and test on him. He'd heard of it happening in the past. His mother, thankfully in a government career, had managed to 'get rid of' the documentation and sweep things under the rug. Never again.
"I'm with Nell," he said, as if daring Ace to call him a liar. "She's my friend, and thus the Fire elementals are now my enemies. I won't pretend it's the most flattering experience to have your element kick you out, but I can't say I'm regretting it." It was better to be kicked out and have your friend be safe than to stay and have everyone target your friend--including yourself. "As for Cyn, well, I knew her. I won't go into detail, but Nell is the better person." He blinked at Ace. "Can I trust that you won't drench me the moment we're alone, then?" He was half-kidding, but he was too stoic to sound like it.

Ace listened to him still tensed about being around Josh. He was a fire kid and since this was a war with fire the enemies of water, it was only natural to be tense around your enemies. For example during world war 2 The Americans put Japanese immigrants and American Born Japanese in ghettos and such, wary of any of them being spys. Then Ace was caught off guard with him speaking about the danger of using powers outside of school. And in a fight, those powers would be flash and catch attention causing a lot of danger to everyone else at the school. He mentally face palmed as he had totally forgotten about that, about the danger it could impose on others. He had a point, maybe he shouldn't fight. This guy didn't seem like some other fire kids he encountered who wanted to fight, granted that was during a rather tense time at the Academy.
When he said he was with Nell he didn't let out a sigh of relief just yet. Ace was trusting, just not that trusting. He listened to Josh's story about getting kicked out and watched him. He let out that previously mentioned sigh of relief. He decided to trust Josh, it's not like they would suddenly fight here. No he didn't think he would, he was the one who brought up the point about not showing powers outside of school. Ace nodded when Josh said Nell was the better person. Nell was an amazing person all around, and she couldn't even hurt a fly. Really blaming a murder on a girl who can't hurt a fly. It was like blaming JFK's murder on a three year old with a balloon in their hand.
Ace smiled "Yea you can trust me, I won't drench you or anything, unless you betray Nell of course." He said with a smile. It was a smile, but it wasn't an empty threat if he tried to hurt and or betray her and that ends up getting her killed or worse. Well Josh better watch out for a lot of water to rain down on him when he least suspected it. Ace got up from his seat and walked toward Josh. When he got within reach he stuck out his hand. "Truce?" He asked an eyebrow raised.

Well, at least they were in agreement on one thing. Ace may have been a little strange and all, but as long as he wasn't trying to kill Nell, Joshua was fine with him. "She's my friend," he repeated slowly, rolling his eyes when Ace mentioned Joshua betraying the kind-hearted Earth girl. Just because he was a Fire elemental, that didn't mean that Ace had to distrust so quickly! Well, alright, maybe the Fire kids could be nasty little shits sometimes. Joshua understood that, really. But he wasn't going to backstab Nell--even if it turned out that the rumours were true, that she was guilty, he'd sooner call the cops than see her slaughtered. Murder was barbaric and unnecessary. "I'm not going to betray her. I trust Nell." He trusted her, and he sure as hell hoped Ace trusted him enough not to attack them once they got outside. He'd already had a few run-ins due to public power displays, he didn't need to add another to the list. There was only so many times his mother could bail him out.
Ace stuck out his hand and offered a truce. Gray eyes flickered downward uncertainly, undecisive about whether he could trust him, nevermind Ace trusting Joshua. After a slight pause, Joshua brought up his hand and clasped it around that of the other boy, giving a firm shake. His grasp was tight around the Water students, but it was not strangling--a sign of trust rather than an attempt at intimidation. "If you're on Nell's side, that means we're on the same side," he said. It was meant lightly, of course; Joshua would never be entirely friendly with the Water and Earths, just the same as he'd never been entirely friendly with his former alliance. He didn't make friends easily and keeping them was even more difficult. But he could at least promise civility. No attacking, no set-ups, no traps or tricks. That was for sure. As long as Ace meant Nell no ill will, Joshua was the same.
"Dale, would you mind heading down to the east wing? Lupus, you can come with me, there's stuff you're needed for." One of the supervisors spoke formally from the door, distracting him. "Sure," he replied. He'd almost forgotten for a moment that he was supposed to be volunteering rather than having a chat with someone, but he turned to Ace and said regardless, "See you around," before he quickly rinsed his hands and headed toward the designated wing.
[As the war is over, makes sense to bring this to a close]
