Harley got that feeling that every single Fire and Thunder element hated her. Harley slid down the wall in the hallway of the academy, and put her head in her hands. What has she done? She had betrayed her element for someone she didn't even know, and now she was a target. Harley was sure she literally had no one anymore, except Josh. He was the only reason she had made such a rash choice. She trusted him to lead her right, even if he didn't know he was leading her just yet. The red head leaned her head against the wall, and closed her eyes. Why did this have to happen now? Of all times, really. Honestly, it couldn't be worse; her friends hated her for taking sides with Cynthia's murderer.
Hell, Harley didn't even know if the girl really did kill her. Harley began to bang her head against the wall, and muttering how stupid she was. Josh better love her. Harley raked her hand through the tangled mess of what she called hair. What would Charlette think of her? Would she be proud or disappointed? This was no way to bring her sister into the academy. Harley growled to no one in particular. She could feel her skin heating, and knew she should calm down. She just needed to think about things, and talk to Josh. He needed to get the story, meet this Nell.
If she felt the girl was innocent, she'd defend her. If not...well, Harley didn't want to cross Josh. She'd just leave the girl to whoever. Harley looked around, and was curious to how others reacted to the situation. Other than Josh, she hadn't seen many people storm out, which suprised her. You would think Earth would be furious. Maybe they were, and she didn't notice. She was very unobservant sometimes. The red head let out a shaky breath when she noticed a figure down the hallway. She knew who it was, and she shot up, and raced towards him. "Josh!"
Harley skidded to a stop in front of him, trying to catch his breath. notes; hehe outfit; click[/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote]

It was strange, having his own element turn against him. He was so accustomed to being on his own side of the Alliance that having them hunting for him was... alien, unheard of. They had issued a sort of blacklist on any and all traitors that turned their loyalties over to Nell, so now they were out to get him as well. He didn't know whether they'd kill him or just incapacitate him if they had the chance--neither sounded very appealing, to be honest. But that didn't matter. Not to Joshua. He may not have been friends with Nell but he was very opinionated and his opinion of her would not be swayed and changed just because he felt out of place. This was just a bit too akin to how he'd felt with the gang, unfortunately. Circumstances forced him into choosing a side. He couldn't win either way, and now here he was with everyone turning on him. It was uncomfortable and just plain strange.
On the flip side, having the Earth and Water elements accept him was just as unexpected. They seemed reluctant to have the stoic and rather frightening college student amongst their ranks, but they didn't drive him off or make snide remarks about him. Instead, he acted as a sort of mercenary. He helped fight their battles with them, as well. If anything too bad with the Fire students happened, Joshua would jump in and do his best to shield the sensitive Earth kids from the fiery power. Water students were more effective thanks to their strength, but they were kept tied up with the fact that Thunder targeted them due to weakness. Joshua, at the moment, had no weaknesses against him. He had a neutrality against fire due to the fact that he was of the element, and he was strong against Thunder. But even though he had a distinct advantage, this whole thing was still an experience he hadn't decided whether he liked. He supposed he'd wait until the war ended. Once Nell either survived or fell to their clutches, he'd make his decision about this rash war of the elements. He'd never liked war, but this was something new altogether.
He wasn't yet aware that Harley had also decided to back Nell. The two were friends, but the college student was on edge and prepared to defend himself and Nell for as long as it took for the fighting to die down--against friend or foe alike. And so when she stopped in front of him, his lips pressed into a hard line and a wave of heat rippled through the hall. It was almost a warning sign, a signal that he was ready to defend himself if need be. "I don't want to fight you," he said shortly, "but if that's what I've got to do, it's tough luck for the pair of us." Gray eyes narrowed dangerously. "I've chosen my side and I don't care what you, Blackthorn, nor any of the others say or try and do to me, I'm sticking with it. Nell is innocent, this war is barbaric and unnecessary. Now unless you want me to attack you, I'd suggest you get out of the way pretty quick." He did hope that she understood it wasn't personal, at least. They'd been friends, but wars changed everything. War always changed everything. They weren't even allies any more.

Harley didn't get bothered by much, but this bothered her. What would happen after all this? She sighed, was she scared? No. She refused to be afraid; she knew Josh wasn't stupid. Hopefully he wouldn't attack her when she talked to him. Harley wanted to help in every way she could. Her thoughts went to her friends, oh how they must hate her. Charolette would be proud that Harley went with her heart, not her element. The red head may be a Fire element, and have the personality of one, but she had been raised by Earth elementals.
Green eyes widened a bit when Joshua spoke. He was threatening her; he never did that. Harley felt the hallway heat up, and she felt her anger spark at his assuming and threat. She felt her hands heat up with anger. She needed to calm down before they really got into it. Josh should know her better than that. Harley felt a throaty growl rise to her lips. "I'm insulted that you think I came out here to fight you, Josh,"
Harley said to him. She felt herself calming down, and her expression softened from a scowl to sympathy. They were in the same boat now. "Josh, I'm on your side. They've declared war on a girl without proof. That's not okay. Plus, I have family in Earth. I will not stand by, and let tempermental teenagers hurt her." Harley meant Kansas, of course. Harley trusted Josh, and hoped to God he was right. [/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote]

Joshua felt the air get slightly hotter around them as Harley's hands started to heat up, and the older Fire student was fully prepared to get physically violent. There was the dark light of determination glittering in his gray eyes as flames started to flicker around his own hands, Joshua bringing them together to form a swirling ball of flame between his palms. He was just about to pull it back and blast it at his ex-friend when she spoke, sounding upset and offended. She apparently didn't like the idea that Joshua thought she was going to attack him, and Josh quickly made the connection that this must mean she was not on the offensive. He did not yet back down, however, suspicion still flickering in the depths of his gaze. "Oh? And how do I know that?" He didn't, really. Just like no one knew for sure that Nell had killed Cynthia.
His eyes narrowed slightly. "All of my family are in Fire," he replied. "Do you see me siding with them?" His tone was sharp and filled with an iciness that he usually didn't use around the Fire girl. But Joshua had made his choice, he'd chosen Nell over the Fire element and that was that. He still wasn't sure whether he could trust her. Sure, they were friends, but Josh was a suspicious guy. Surely Harley knew that he hardly had any friends and was as suspicious as ever? He just didn't want to make any stupid mistakes and lead an enemy straight into range of the very person he was trying to protect.
Still, after a moment longer of glaring, his jaw clenched and the fire slowly dispersed. "Our element is out to get me," he said shortly. "Siding with Nell isn't all sunshine and rainbows. For all I knew, they'd sent you as a spy or worse." Worse, as in an assassin. It seemed cruel to suspect a friend of such things, but Joshua had seen all manner of betrayals and backstabbing in the elemental wars. "You'll be taking a risk if you side with us," he said bluntly. "I've already had a target painted on my back, you could probably avoid having one on yours."

The Fire student watched as her friend created, and sucked in her breath. Harley refused to get violent with him. Her jaw clentched, and she glanced away from his intense grey eyes. She was mortified that he would think something like that. Harley didn't take orders from someone who looked at others at pawns. Harley had been raised differently; to think about things before jumping the gun. Most of the time. This situation was just that; thinking first. Her green eyes glittered with frustration at the boy. God, they could be so stubborn sometimes. Especially Josh. "Because you should trust me, Josh! I trust you,"
she told him with aggervation. Okay, honestly? Harley was getting pissed off. She sided with him and this accused girl without even knowing her. Harley took a step back from him; he just sent the biggest blow. He grew up with the same element, she hadn't. She grew up with Earth users. "I am the only non Earth element in my family, Joshua,"her voice creeped with ice as she continued, "I think my vote gets swayed more than yours." It wasn't just that, Harley was protecting someone dear to her. Kansas was the only family Harley had left, other than Charolette. That old woman hardly needed Harley's protection against the unruly, and overly hormonal teens at this academy. "I'm not just doing this because I think this Nell Shepard is innocent. I'm doing this to protect my sister. I will not let some ass push her around for sport." Josh had to understand why she was doing this. Harley couldn't help but to laugh. Oh, they were totally in the same boat now. Sure, people would hate her, but Harley could take care of herself. "Oh, don't worry-they hate me. I mighr have irrationally told Blackthorne that I wasn't on his side. So, I think the proper words would be, we are both royally screwed," the red head told him. Harley shrugged, like it wasn't a big deal, and gave Josh a sly grin. "I have a feeling that we'll be seeing much more of each other, my dear Joshua," Harley said with a sigh. [/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote]

Harley was angry with him for being so suspicious, he could pick up on that right away. But even though they were friends and so perhaps he should have felt guilty for suspecting her, Joshua could not get those feelings to spawn in his mind. He was looking out for himself, he was protecting himself... and he was protecting Nell. He had to make absolutely sure of everything. People whom he'd thought he still at least got along with had turned on him in the space of a day. So even Harley had been subjected to his momentary distrust. The fact that she was taking it personal irritated him. "It's hard to trust when your own allies turn against you," he snapped, anger glittering in his gray eyes. Did she want to fight with him? Oh, he'd show her a fight! But then he mentally kicked himself.
Stupid temper problems and the stupid other problems they created. The entire hall was now sweltering, his anger personified in the waves of heat that spread outward. He couldn't help that his anger was being fuelled, but he was going to try and stop it from getting out of hand. With obvious and tremendous effort, he scowled, clenched his jaw, and (sort of) relaxed. Fine. Fine. He'd accept the fact that Harley was alright. The heat started to dissipated just as the fire had done. Not that it would have really bothered Harley much--they were both Fire students, after all.
She brought up her family and this actually pissed him off even more, completely ruining the efforts of 'calming down'. "What the fuck is that supposed to mean?" he demanded, gray eyes smouldering with rage. "So my family doesn't fucking matter to me any more, huh? Is that it? Is that what you're trying to say?" The reaction might have been unexpected, but family was still a sensitive subject with Joshua. He'd never told her much about his parents--hell, he hadn't even told Harley he had a sister. All she knew was that they were Fire elementals, like him. Unless she watched the news; his mother was on the news a lot, speaking out at events and doing the normal politician crap. Not to mention all the scandals involving her delinquent son. Fun, that was. "Just because I didn't end up as the opposite of their fucking power doesn't mean that my loyalty to them is any god damned different!"
Jesus Christ, it was hard to think past all of this rage. Harley knew what he was like from their being friends over the years, but even though he got angry at her sometimes he'd never really went off on a tangent like this. Needing some way to vent before he was tempted to attack her, he punched the nearby wall instead. Son of a bitch! Pain exploded and he pulled it back, gritting his teeth so tight that the only thing that escaped was a slight hiss of irritation. Breathing hard, the agony at least stopped him from going off on his friend. Glaring at her, he said, "Don't suggest that my family doesn't matter to me, Harley. Don't ever."
His eyes narrowed. They weren't quite on the same side, after all. She was doing it to look out for her sister and he was looking out for the victim of this whole mess. "Yeah, well I am," he said. "Nell is a... friend of mine." The way he said 'friend' suggested that he really didn't know where he stood with the Earth girl, but the fact that he was risking life and limb for her suggested that she was at least in his good graces. "I'm doing this because I don't believe she's a killer. And if you do, well..." He trailed off for a moment and drew breath. "If you try to go after Nell, Harley, I'm going to have to attack you. It wouldn't be personal, but..." He shrugged, and having said his bit he leaned against the wall. He felt dizzy and drained from the spell of anger.
But even if she was only doing this for sister-dearest, it seemed both Harley and Joshua were cast out of the Fire dormitories. "Great," he muttered, rolling his head. "Fucking Blackthorn. Can't stand that fucking guy..."
[Josh is so... so... -punches wall- Fuck, he's so angry. xD I know this wasn't supposed to be an argument but he's just being difficult and I had to stay in character. & I know he probably took that the wrong way ;D Again, IC.]

Harley threw up her arms, and was going to walk away from him. It was hopeless. It truly was. Harley could feel this was going to be pointless, and someone was going to get hurt; and it would probably be her. She wasn't as experienced as him. Harley could feel her temper flare at his stupidity to see that not everyone will hurt him. The red head was going to blow, and she would blow up at Josh. It wasn't personal, but he was the closet person, and she was already angry enough. Josh was not helping one bit. "Oh for the love of GOD Josh! Not everyone is out to get you, not everyone is going to hurt you just because of something they were born into,"
she yelled at him. Harley didn't want to come off as harsh, but he was making it so difficult! Inwardly, Harley groaned. She had made the wrong choice of words, and it had made him even more angry, but all rational thoughts were gone for a moment. "No, Josh! That is NOT what I meant, and you know it! YOU were not born into an all Earth family, and have a younger sister who could be at risk because of her element! You do not know me, or anything about me, the red head was practically screaming at him now. This was the messed up thing: these two knew nothing about each other, but had managed to be somewhat friends. Harley had been able to relate to Josh because of him being such a loner. Now, it was like their true selves were coming undone; the part of Harley she tried so hard to lock away was coming undone. All because of some stupid, and idiotic war. "It's different for me! It's not just that! I know when something is right and something is wrong Josh! It takes more then some asshole to decide where my loyalties lie, and right now, they belong to my sister," Harley said coldly. Harley watched as Josh punched the wall. Oh great, he's tempermental and stupid all in one," she thought. She let out a groan, and went for his hand to look at it. "I just want to see if it's broken, so do not attack me," she told him. Harley grabbed his hand gently, and felt around the area he had managed to hit the hardest. Harley growled at his next words, and pushed his hand away. "Did those words ever, ever leave my lips? No. I said that my vote counts a bit differently than yours. I never said you didn't care. So don't ever say something like that again. Family is the most important thing to me; I would never suggest anything like that," she told him through clentched teeth. The girl had never questioned his motive as to why he went against his element, and hadn't planned too. When he said that this Nell was a friend, Harley raised a brow. Most Fire's never left outside their element, and allaince. "I'm not going to attack anyone without cause. I'm more intelligent, and civil then most people think, Josh. I have a rational mind when it comes to things like these," she told him with a matter of fact voice. Harley shrugged at him, she wasn't going to attack an innocent person. "Nothing is ever personal, Josh. Nothing," she told him, sliding down to sit against the wall. Being angry was tiring. Well, outcasts it was. "I'm not a fan of him either. He's a dick," she shrugged. She wasn't sure it Blackthron had a lot of people that liked him, but just stood behind him because they had too. [so, josh pissed her off.. a lot. xD harley hasn't been this pissed since her parents...so hats off to Josh.] [/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote]

Not everyone was out to get him? Not everyone was out to get him? "Don't even fucking go there," he said. He was not yelling now--his tone had dropped to an almost whisper and his hands were shaking. He wanted to throttle her for that comment, and it was really quite alarming. It took every ounce of his self-control not to attack her at that moment. Harley was pushing buttons she probably didn't know existed, and that was never a good idea with him. "You have no fucking idea, so don't you even suggest--" Fuck, was he ever mad. He cut himself off and clenched his jaw, heat absolutely radiating from him now as he started to lose control over what his anger was doing to the elemental atmosphere of the hall. "Don't tell me that people aren't out to fucking get me when they ambush me in the god damned halls, block me from the dormitories, threaten my fucking life all because I took my friend's side in some stupid war that doesn't even make sense to begin with!" He was seething, but the words were spoken in level tones rather than shouted. Don't hurt her, Josh. For fucks sakes, don't go for her. But it was difficult, oh so difficult.
There was an underlying reason why this enraged him, however. She didn't know anything about him, so Harley knew absolutely nothing of the gang that had hunted him down and tried to kill him twice now. She'd never asked where he'd gotten the scars, not that he cared whether she asked. He actually preferred when attention was not called to them, especially the one on his face. He still frequently caught people staring. At any rate, the fact that the gang was still hunting him was the reason for his mistrust of everyone, the reason he was so paranoid. "If you don't like the way I am, I never asked you to stick around," he growled. He'd lost friends before, he wouldn't be surprised if she just stormed off in a rage.
He almost went for her. He really almost did it. In fact, he was halfway through raising an arm to deck her in the face when he forced himself to stop, his arm trembling with the force it took to drop it back to his side. "No, my family aren't in Earth," he hissed slowly. "You know where they are? Where they all are? Fire." He had sided against his parent element in this war, all for Nell. His baby sister was probably going to be a Fire elemental too, as soon as she was old enough to start attending the Academy that is. "I have a little sister too, I'm not as thick as you seem to think." He was starting to get dizzy from the fact that the heat was coming off him in waves, filling the hall and making the air shimmer with it. "I turned on my damn family because I believed Nell was innocent. You can't fucking suggest that your situation is more important." If anything, they were even.
"It's not," he snapped, but he didn't attack her when she grasped his hand. She shoved it away a moment later, however, and once again he found himself with the overwhelming urge to backhand her. Violence was always the way his father dealt with him when he got in Donovan's face and started yelling, and so he almost reacted with what he knew best. "Family matters a lot more to me than you'd think," he snapped. "But it doesn't mean I'd kill a friend for them." Kill for them, maybe. But not over something like this, something so stupid.

Wow, this conversation wasn't going how she wanted it too. Harley wasn't even pisses anymore; she didn't have it in her to argue with him. The girl sighed, and ran a hand through her hair roughly. Harley didn't know what to say to him anymore. Clearly their friendship wasn't a real friendship. "Whatever Josh, I am done arguing with you about this. All I wanted to do was let you know I had your back, but clearly you don't want my help," she told him quietly. It pained her to think like she was, that he didn't-- Harley stopped, and turned her gaze to him. "Yes, Josh, other people are experiencing the same damn thing you are. Sorry to pop your bubble, but there are other people here other than you that side with her."
Seriously? Harley was positive that he was just being a dick about everything. She took a few calming breaths, and tried to think of something good, and peaceful, but she was getting nothing. She fought furiously to keep her tears back. Harley was not going to cry infront of him, not when she needed to be angry with him. His friendship had meant a lot to her when she was younger, she never asked him about himself because well, it seemed rude. A low growl slipped from her lips, and she resisted the urge to reach out and smack him. "You want to know why I stuck around all those years, Josh? I stayed because I saw you, and thought, 'he looks like a good guy.' I never asked about your scars because to me that meant I would have to tell you what I did to get here. I also thought it was rude, I figured if you wanted me know about your life, you'd tell me on your own time," she looked up to him, her eyes locking with his. Harley shock her head. She wasn't stupid, far from it. The red head could feel the tension wrapping around the two, and through out the hallway. She was sure someone could cut it with a knife. It didn't suprise her that his family was Fire, most kids took after their parents element. A look of shock crossed her face briefly when he revealed he a baby sister too. Harley had never known... Then again, he never revealed much about himself, and neither had she. "Whatever Josh, I'm done having this discussion. It doesn't fucking matter why I stood against Blackthorne, or the Alliance. It doesn't fucking matter if someone believes in doing the right fucking thing," she yelled. Harley felt the air around her get warmer as her temper flared again.

Harley was wrong about that--he had wanted her help. No, no. He didn't want her help, but he was pretty sure that Nell would have appreciated it. "I'm not the one with the target on their back," he snarled. "If you wish so badly to betray our allies in the war, you should have done it because of her, not because of me." He didn't care if his friends wanted to kill Nell--if they went after Nell, he'd go after them. He'd chosen her over his own element and unfortunately for Harley that meant he'd chosen Nell over her as well. And it was great that Harley wanted to betray the Alliance and everything, but she was going about it the wrong way. "Never said there weren't," he spat. "But we're the odd ones out of this war. Not all the fucking Earth students will be happy to have us around." They were Fire elementals, the very elementals that tormented and terrified the Earth kids on an almost daily basis. He wasn't saying that he was the only one that had took Nell's side, he was pissed off because Harley was suggesting that he was somehow 'safe' despite the fact that people were indeed out to attack him. Sure, that wasn't what she'd said exactly, but that was how it felt to him.
Gray eyes narrowed fiercely. "If you think I'm a 'good guy', get ready to rethink your own opinions," he snapped. He knew that he wasn't all sunshine and butterflies and friendly chats underneath the oak trees. Joshua was acidic and angry and he had a violent temper. Harley had never set him off like this before, but he didn't doubt she'd be able to do it again. He'd lost plenty of friends this way before. It almost didn't matter to him that he was about to lose another. At least he was convincing himself that it didn't matter. He was volatile. It was the reason Nell surprised him so much for sticking with him even though he'd tried to kill her (or threatened to try) when they were first acquainted. That was the reason he was willing to risk his betrayal to protect her. Because most of his friends wouldn't do something like that. This right here was what he was used to. People didn't tolerate his anger.
"I never said it mattered," he snapped. "It was you who started this fucking discussion and dragged your family into it. You could have just said you were on her side and I wouldn't have fucking doubted it." Alright, Joshua could tell that he was on the end of his rope now. He really couldn't risk blowing up at her because he had a feeling that he could seriously hurt Harley. The very thought of hanging out with her at the moment had him sickened, but he had enough self control that he knew now was the time to leave. "Fuck this, I'm out of here. You can find your own way of combating the Alliance." He turned and left.
[That works--yeah, it'd probably be Harley xD Josh is too angry and stubborn, plus he's lost friends like this before and usually doesn't go out of his way to make it up to them.]
