THEY SEEM SO VERY TOUGH (it's a lie, it's a lie) THEY SEEM SO VERY SCARED OF US Nell’s shoes swung from her fingers as she walked along the shore of the lake, softly singing a song she remembered teaching her sister. ”Un elefantes se columpiaba sobre la tela de una araña…” She’d used to sing the girl to sleep after the girl had a night terror or a fit, laid right next to her, mouth next to Tilly’s ear so her sister’s voice could soothe her. And even then, there was hope. A lot of hope.
She felt safer around the lake. The fire students didn’t like it, but there was still a chance of Thunders hanging around. Still, it was better than nothing. Better than hanging out in the Earth dorms all the time. But honestly, most of the time she didn’t know what to do with herself. What was safe, what was not, how to make it through the day without emerging uninjured. The problem was, she rarely felt safe. Never did, really. Even with Josh’s protection, the fear always stayed there. And she guessed that’s what war was supposed to be. Full of fear and dread and lingering thoughts she should have left behind in America.
She stopped her small skipping steps through the water to look out at the expanse of water. Most of Nell’s stupider ideas came when she was around the lake. But she came prepared with one, so it was less of a spontaneous, stupid idea. It was early Spring, warming up but rainy. And she still didn’t know how to swim. Nell wanted to learn, though, and so she dropped her shoes, having stopped her singing. There wasn’t really anyone else around, some people wading in the water but not actually going all the way in.
Except Nell.
Making sure no one was looking, she pulled off her shirt and jeans, one-piece bathing suit underneath. Even with this much skin covered, she still felt uncomfortable because there were other scars besides the ones on her stomach, the main one having healed in a jagged line. But they were only apparent if you came up close, and she made sure to stay away from others. Yes, this was stupid. What if she drowned or something? Hopefully a Water student would be around to help her. But she wouldn’t go in too deep…
She bit back a Spanish curse—not only out of surprise, but her thoughts remaining in the language thanks to the song—as she emerged deeper into the water, leaving her clothes on shore. The deeper she went, the colder it became, until she was up to her waist. Oh god, it was so cold. As she stood there out in the water, she wondered what to do. How do you learn to swim? Nell moved her hands around, creating little waves, and tried to get used to the feeling. Okay, she felt a little like an idiot now. But hopefully no one would come along…

"backbeat the word is on the street that the fire in your heart is out," tasmin sung quietly under her breath, the gait of her walk matching the slowness of the song she was singing. her voice faded out when she heard heavy steps pounding against the grounds behind her. she wasn't afraid to have anyone her hear voice, it was more that she felt like singing was her own release that no one needed to know about. absently she took a step to the side and sharply inhaled when a pair of boys rough housing clamored right past where she had been standing. tasmin's eyes followed the boys until they romped over towards the cliffs and she couldn't strain her view any further to see them. she gave a slight shake of her head and let out a soft sigh, they would caused her topple right over if she hadn't subconsciously moved over.
after a few light steps forward tasmin released another soft breath and uttered a few more random lyrics to the same song, "and all the roads we have to walk are winding," tasmin bobbed her head a little and then threw her arms out to either side of her to twirl unsteadily. her words turned into laughter and she continued to spin along, her feet dug into the ground and dizziness soon took over. one of tasmin's feet caught the other leg at her ankle and instead of circling around again she began to fall heavily towards the ground. tasmin didn't let out a cry or an exclaim of pain, she decided that it would be silly to get angry at her own mistake and airily laughed instead. sitting up tas looked around and found that she was still laughing.
her mood was pleasant and being outside in the warm weather was only improving how good she felt. tasmin was now eager about the decision that she had made to fish her swimsuit out from her heap of clothes and test out he waters of the lake. she raised to stand again and practically skipped over towards the shore of the lake, excitement came easily too tasmin anymore. she wondered how cold the water would be, probably freezing but not so cold that she would take one step in and be ready to crawl back towards the shore. tasmin frowned when she thought how much domino would enjoy to run through the water and paddle around. he had to be cooped up in the apartment because she was sure dogs weren't allowed the grounds. if he had been small enough she would have tried to sneak him around. domino was large and shaggy, anyone would have easily spotted him.
when she reached the shore she didn't hesitate to kick off her shoes and then glance around for a moment. a few other students were lingering around the shore while a few others were wading. no one had gone any further than their knees, tasmin would be the first. her jeans were peeled off easily and her shirt followed. for a moment she shifted uneasily because of how exposed her body was, her scars were easily spotted against her skin and that made her feel vulnerable. instead of letting her feet warm to the water she lifted her legs high in the air and barreled into the water. tasmin was shivering by the time the water came to her waist. teeth chattering she peered around and then felt her face lift when she saw a familiar face dragging her fingers in the water. "nell!" her thick irish accent called out.

THEY SEEM SO VERY TOUGH (it's a lie, it's a lie) THEY SEEM SO VERY SCARED OF US Nell didn’t think she could get used to this water. At all. She wondered how the water students did it. Maybe she should have asked one of her friends to come out and teach her how to swim instead of tackling this all on her own. But the girl was self-reliant, and self-reliant she would continue to be. Never admit defeat, never surrender! If she asked for help, it felt like giving up and burdening someone else. So she didn’t ever ask anyone for anything. Even if it was something simple. Sometimes, when she realized it would be a problem, she relented because she knew arguing would make her even more of a burden. She shuddered slightly as a breeze blew over the lake, coming off from the cliffs, but it was nothing too bad.
Her ears pricked up then, and she stopped movign her hands around. Hmm…a voice? It was familiar, too. After all, it wasn’t every day one heard an Irish accent in Canada. She’d heard that in other parts of Canada they had Scottish accents, but she didn’t know whether or not to believe it. Either way, she knew that her New Yorker accent was also not something heard every day. And she was about ready to assimilate so people would stop asking her about where she came from, afraid of revealing too much about herself. Even saying that she was from The Bronx felt dangerous to her. Her eyes lit up as she looked at Tasmin. ”Ooh, Taz! Taz!” Nell chirped back, making her way over to the girl.
Thanks to water resistance, Nell made her was slowly over to Tasmin, waving like an idiot even though she was barely even two feet away. It looked like she was doing a Baywatch slo-mo. And when she finally reached the girl, she managed to catch her toe on a rock buried in the sand and stumble forward, lightly gripping her friend’s shoulder for support. ”Ack, toe!” she breathed, and then recovering she moved back and smile. ”Sorry about that, Tazzy.” Then, feeling that the girl was shivering under her touch she said, ”Jeez, you’re freezing! We’re a couple of smarties, aren’t we, going out in the water like it’s summer.” Nell giggled at this, in a very good mood now that the girl was here.
Nell started to bounce on her feet, creating mini-waves, half in an attempt to warm herself up, the other half out of excitement. Gipping Tasmin’s hand, she said, ”I’m glad I’m not the only one who had the idea to come out here! It’s nice, isn’t it? Finally spring and we can grow flowers now without that stupid snow.” Wrinkling her nose, she was sure the Irish girl had similar feelings. The Earthies were all griping about winter. ”So, uh, this may sound odd, but…do you know how to swim?” Yes, sometimes she felt she had to brace others for her stupid questions. The girl probably did know how to swim, but maybe she was like Nell. She found herself hoping that there were others out there like her who didn’t know how to do simple things that most learned in childhood. ”Because I’m trying to teach myself, but I don’t know how well it’ll work out.”

swimming was something that tasmin could never get enough of. the feeling of having the water lap against her legs when she first plunged into the pool or lake was soothing to her. her swimming skills weren't exceptional or barely reached average but she could paddle slowly and maneuver her way around. back in ireland the chances to swim had never been presented to her. nolan had been the one that was given all the opportunities to romp around freely and fulfill nearly any desired that was birthed into his mind. while tasmin had been able to gallivant around on the caravan horses or sing as loudly as she wished her freedom had always been limited. minny was never one to complain but to have her abilities to do something being capped made her frustrated. would anyone have else felt the same way if they the had been thrown into the same situation?
hearing the new york accent call out her nickname eagerly made her insides jump with excitement. every friend that she had managed to establish a relationship with was considered nearly holy to tasmin. her trust was put into them and if their bond was tight enough they became her trusted confidant. nell sheperd was one of the people that tasmin could list as close to her. they were in the same grade, element, and their personalities were strikingly similar. tasmin threw her arms into the air and moved forward a few more steps. "nell! nell! the water is so cold!" tasmin hollered over to her, her teeth were clacking together while she looked over at the girl with a beaming smile that lit up her entire face. tasmin continued to stand there, looking extremely comical as she kept her arms wide open and allowed nell to slowly cut through the water to come her way.
nell was waving frantically over to tasmin and her hands continued to wave at her until she was only a few feet away from her. the sight of nell trying to force herself through the water and her animated face caused tasmin to giggle feverishly. by the time nell finally came close enough tasmin had dissolved into a heap of laughter. minny went to remark about how hilarious nell had looked but she gripped at her shoulders and hollered something about her toe. tasmin reached out and placed her hands onto nell's shoulders, concern instantly took over her expression. "is your toe hurt? what did you hit it on? are you okay?" she gushed out, her worry coloring her tone. nell pulled away from her and made mention of how she was shivering, that left her to believe that nell was fine. she had a tendency for overreacting. "it finally got warm enough so i wanted to take the chance to swim!" tasmin justified, giving her a sheepish smile.
nell was bouncing and tasmin's eagerness was egged on by the warm sight of the girl. with her hand grasped tightly in nell's tasmin let out a giggle and twirled herself in a circle around her. the circle was slow but gracefully executed, her dancing elegance hinted slightly in her movements. tasmin tugged on nell's hand and gave her a bouncy nod. "to not have to deal with the snow is a grace of god, really. i love the change of the seasons. now that it's warmer we can see nature grow," tasmin said thoughtfully, her face lighting up with a smile. flowers and warm weather were something that could easily perk her mood up at anytime. she let her free hand drag her fingers over the water and felt her smile grow when little ripples were created. "do i know how to swim?" tasmin looked at her with a puzzled stare and then gestured to the water absently. "i'm not exactly the best swimmer but i can do something that passes as a glorified dog paddle," she offered, wondering if that passed as swimming.

THEY SEEM SO VERY TOUGH (it's a lie, it's a lie) THEY SEEM SO VERY SCARED OF US The two must have looked a sight, arms flailing around as they beckoned to each other, the tug of the water slowing them down. ”I know!” Nell called back about the freezing water, sure that her lips were turning blue. It made Nell crack up when she finally reached the girl, though it was cut short by the stinging pain. God, she loved this girl! Earth students were usually those in her inner circle, the ones she trusted the most, and Tasmin was one of the closest. There were so many times Nell just wanted to tell her some of her deepest secrets, but found herself scared and still somehow untrusting. There was only so far Nell could go, and she was sure it was for Tasmin, who was a bit more neurotic than her, as proven with her rambling over Nell’s pretty non-existent injury.
Tazzy was adorable when she got worked up like that! Wow, that sounded really cruel, but it was true. After Nell stopped bouncing on her toe and using her friend as support, she gave a final hiss through her teeth. A laugh was working through Nell’s voice as she said, ”I’m fine, I’m fine. Just stubbed my toe on a pebble.” Funny how the stupidest things like stubbing your toe gave you the most intense pain. As Tasmin defended herself, Nell chuckled again. She couldn’t help it. ”Great minds think alike!” It was truly a nice day out, perhaps it would just take time to get to used to the chilly lake water. She had never gone swimming before, so she wouldn’t know.
Nell laughed as she spun around with the Irish girl, barely having to move her feet in the water to keep balance. It was amazing the way Tasmin moved, like she came from the womb dancing. Tasmin enthusiastically agreed with her, and Nell giggled, her sides already starting to hurt a bit for laughing so much with her. ”You should see my apartment now! I have a whole bunch of plants growing! It’s like a jungle in there!” She knew the girl would love seeing how the place looked now. It always smelled like flowers, and all the plants did well to cover up some of the more unattractive stains on the walls. ”Soon I’ll need a machete to get to my kitchen!” Then curiously, she asked, ”Have you been growing anything?” Nell was beginning to discover that she had a soft spot for horticulture, and though many students wanted to do something else with their lives other than grow plants, it was something she was considering. Always wondering what people wanted to do when they ‘grew up’, she wondered what Taz wanted. Maybe to become a world famous dancer or something! That would be so cool.
Skimming her fingers along the water, Tasmin seemed confused by her question, and Nell wondered if it was indeed something strange to ask or if the other girl had to think about it. These things were always on her mind. ”Dog paddle?” Luckily, Nell knew what that meant and also knew it was something of a beginner way to swim. Eventually, people learned how to do the whole arms-over-head thing, and keeping their face down in the water. ”Yeah, I think that’s where I need to start. But first…” She pinched her nose and submerged herself, popping up almost immediately and bouncing again, shivering more than ever. ”Okay, maybe now I’ll get used to it,” she said, rubbing her goosepimpled arms. Stretching her arms out, she starting batting at the water, almost completely submerged. ”Uhh…like this?” she asked Tasmin, feeling like an idiot. But if Tasmin knew, then surely she’d advise her!

nell was a girl that tasmin felt like she could never get enough. tasmin was pretty cheery herself but compared to nell it was like she was a calmer version of her. paired together they bounced around and seemed to feed off of the demeanor of each other. nell would flail around excitedly and tasmin would replicated with a more calmed version. the two would chirp out endless chatter to each other then dissolve into heaps of giggling girls. there was always a twinge of guilt when tasmin had to carefully evade her past, like trying to reason while her parents were never spoken of and when wandering maple hallow she was set on edge by everything. to tell nell would be too much of a risk, tas had thrown everything away to try and establish the rickety freedom she now had. her loose lips would not ruin that all.
yes, she had gotten easily worked up when nell had stubbed her toe on the rock. when someone tripped tasmin would drop down besides him and poke them gently with questions while trying to give them a hand. her heart filled with too much worry to simple stand around while someone was experiencing any sort of pain. nell laughed a little at her and tasmin gave her another sheepish smile. "i just had to make sure you were all right. i don't want you trying to swim with something like a broken toe." a broken toe was dramatic but the example had only been for the sake of getting her point across. laughing tasmin pressed a finger to her temple and gave her a nod. from time to time their thoughts were actually quite similar. "how can they not when it's so nice out?" tasmin offered, twirling softly in the water again and barely creating a ripple. the water was still chilly but now it had become bearable.
plants, they were something that tasmin would always adore. her affinity with earth boosted her connection with flowers and such but she had always loved flowers. watching them grow and bloom always gave tasmin some sort of satisfaction, like she was the mother of her plants. "already?! how do you have the time to manage them all, nell?" tasmin gaped at her, positively curious to hear the answer. her time was always filled with schoolwork, balancing her friends, working, and tending to domino. nell mentioned a machete and for a moment the tiniest of frowns pressed onto tasmin's lips. violence was something she didn't like to hear about. nell then pressed her about her own plants and tasmin gave her an enthusiastic nod. "i have got various flowers all over the place. domino tries to eat them from time to time." she grinned.
nell wanted to learn how to swim? tasmin found it slightly odd that the seventeen year old wasn't aware on how to swim. however more important things did come before being able to maneuver your way through the water. tasmin gave her an affirmative nod. "it's the most basic form of swimming and all that i can do. nolan was the swimmer of the family..." her voice cut off and she gave a fond smile at the thought of her late brother. nell suddenly ducked under the water and her attention was but back onto her as she let out a shrill laugh. "that must be freezing!" tasmin exclaimed, eying her. watching nell closely she shook her head slightly. "move you arms like this." tas dropped down in the water and moved clearly in front of nell so that she could see her arms move.

THEY SEEM SO VERY TOUGH (it's a lie, it's a lie) THEY SEEM SO VERY SCARED OF US Nell made sure to keep her hands away from Tasmin’s cheeks when the other girl smiled, feeling the urge lightly pinch them and prattle about her cuteness. Again. Tasmin was dangerous for Nell’s health. Taking advantage of the water’s zero-gravity, she lifted her leg out of the water and held her foot to show off her stubbed toe, wiggling it around. ”See? No broken toes here. I think it would be difficult to swim around with an injury like that, so I'd be more than willing to let you haul me off to the hospital then.” Nell said, moving her leg back underwater and shivering as it once again was forced to grow accustomed to the chill. The emphasis was unecessary, now that Tasmin was calm and twirling around in the water like she was a goddarn mermaid, seemingly at peace now with the temperature. She had to agree—winter was finally thawed, and like bears from hibernation, everyone came out from their caves.
Tas seemed astounded by Nell’s tending of so many flowers at once, to which she only gave a mischevious smile. She leaned in as if she was about to reveal a deep secret and said, ”Well, life’s been pretty stressful lately, so I’ve been putting a lot of time into caring for my plants. More than I should, probably.” But everyone needed an outlet, right? Caring for her flowers took her mind off of war, of her father, of all the people after her… Watching them grow and thrive in her care was like catharsis. Nell didn’t catch the brief twitch of her friends lips, more focused on smiling and giggling like a fool with her. So she was blissfully oblivious to the fact that she had implied violence, as she was grinning about thinking of an Indiana Jones-esque jungle excurssion. ”Silly boy, eating plants!” The thought of her friend’s dog chewing on plants made her laugh. Simply picturing it was amusing. Then an idea popped up into her mind with the idea of dog paddling. “Does Domino like to swim? Ooh, you should bring him here! I wonder if they allow dogs…?”
Nell didn’t recognize the name, having no information regarding Tas’s family, so she tilted her head a bit, her lips stretching up for the girl who seemed to grow lost in her thoughhts for a second. Nodding her head frantically, she suggested, ”You should do it, too! It’ll warm up soon!” Or she could be talking from her ass, but she was growing adjusted. Her smile flickered on her face thanks to the shivering, but she kept it on as she watched Tasmin demonstrated. Nell let her feet kick off so that she actually swam a bit away, keeping her face in the water like she’d seen swimmers on TV do. Then, she flailed and coughed, planting her feet firmly on the sandy ground. “Ack, I breathed in!” She bobbed in the water, making broad strokes to get back over to Tasmin quicker. Then, realizing that her convulsing too may make the girl overzealously worried, she she sputtered, “I’m all right.” The girl worried so much over others, it felt necessary. Adding on a chuckle for good measure, she said, “I guess I’ll get used to the feeling...”
Rubbing her arms and hunching she shoulders as she bounced next to Tas, Nell shook out her hair like a wet dog. She looked out at the sheet of dark water before them and murmured, "How deep do you think it gets?" Taking a few tentative steps away, she turned back to Phoebe and asked, "I want to try swimming around, but I'm afraid there might be a steep drop somewhere nearby." It was a large lake—it even reminded Nell of the ocean—so she was sure it would get much deeper the further they went out. And she was wary of a one-hundred foot. Oh jeez, the lake could be pretty scary when she thought about it. But she just hoped her nerves of steel would come in handy. "Oh wait, I just remembered! The Water dorms are underneath here, so it can't be that deep."
Nell needed no further reasoning as she took Tasmin's hand in both hers. "You wanna try to swim out so we can really practice? I'll even protect you from scary lake monsters!" Of course, it was risky to go out considering Nell could barely grasp doggy paddling, but that never stopped her stupidity before.

she admittedly was the friend that everyone called a mother hen. tasmin was always seen fussing over her friends, constantly asking if their was ever anything she could find for them or assist them with. it was one of her goals to be the best person that the world would allow her to be. visibly looking at nell's undamaged toe brought her peace, her toe wasn't broken which meant that their swimming lesson was good to commence. tasmin nodded in assurance after nell placed her foot back into the water, feeling confident that nell had done herself no harm with the rock. "whenever you break a toe you can come to me immediately! i'll be your transportation in the dire time of a broken toe," tasmin said to her, her face full of laughter as she looked at her and giggled childishly. in the presence of someone like nell tasmin's cheerfulness and affability became more prominent. her hesitance faded, allowing tasmin to easily more enjoy the moments that she was spending with people she cherished.
tasmin was easily lost in the easy spirited atmosphere that being in the presence of nell created. tasmin found that it was effortless to meld herself with this girl and seriously live in the moment with everything that they did. everything was plenty, a lot of their time was spent with one another. she grew curious at nell's devious smile, pressing her forehead against the other girl's, her eyes wide with attention devoted solely on her. "you're an earth girl, plants are you release! that completely makes sense. stress releases are your plants," tasmin said to her excitedly, her comprehension causing her to light up. "your flowers must be gorgeous then, having them be your getaway and all," tasmin mused. her thoughts were taken away to a beautiful garden that would be created purely out of the gentle hands and care of an earth elemental. all of the colorful flowers were devoured immediately by the hungry jaws of the predator known as domino, causing tasmin to take a moment to giggle again. "domino has an appetite for flowers, that all!" thinking about domino made her frown lightly. she still felt shame for leaving him cooped up in the apartment. "i had to leave him at him. i don't think pets are allowed on the grounds. which is such a shame."
it was april, however the warm month shifting into place did not the mean the water warming up too. tasmin ran her hands absently up her arms, goosebumps had formed even though she was only half submerged. nell suggested that she would be more adjusted to the water after her body was revealed to the temperature of the lake. tasmin bobbed her head in agreement saying, "that's just what i'll do!" she blew the air out of her cheeks before deeply inhaling, puffing her cheeks with fresh air before she plunged under the surface of the water. tasmin counted to ten seconds before actually jumpuing out of the water and letting out a yelp because of how frigid the water felt. "i f-feel better!" tasmin figured that if she said it aloud her body would react properly and the words would be justified. her chattering teeth and shaking body were to be disregarded. nell was supposedly doggie paddling around, which didn't seem to be working when she began to cough and flail around in the water. tasmin's panic instantly jumped, ready to grab at her to push her into action. before she could say anything nell spoke out, saying that everything was all right. "i wouldn't advise inhaling any more water. that's not something you do when swimming," tasmin gave as a response, completely sincere with no intentions of achieving sardonic words.
squealing happily, she pulled nell closer to her to wrap her arms around in a loose hug. tasmin grew more affectionate the longer she knew someone and the more she got to have a hold on their personality. she wouldn't have practically pounced on nell if contact discomforted her, thankfully it didn't. tasmin couldn't withhold a giggle when nell shook her head to move the hair from her face, spraying water onto her face and the side of her body. "you were just like domino for a second!" taking a moment to evaluate the lake tasmin grew quiet and peered thoughtfully out at the dark water. "the lake is huge. i would think that at some point it would have to drop so that it got deeper." tasmin never went further into the water then her height, never trusting her swimming abilities to kick in she ever needed them. nell was asking her to venture out in the deeper water, something that instantly sounded dangerous. "all right...let's go..." tasmin, shakily agreed.

THEY SEEM SO VERY TOUGH (it's a lie, it's a lie) THEY SEEM SO VERY SCARED OF US Honestly, Tasmin would be the first girl Nell would go to if she had an injury. She felt comfortable aroud the other girl, to the point where she’d probably forget about any injury she should receive, be it broken toe or bleeding nose. ”My hero!” Nell cooed as she pretended to swoon, dipping back into the water. She erupted into giggles, but there was barely a time when she wasn’t laughing and smiling with Tasmin. It was the kind of friendship where they didn’t have to say anything and they’d find it absolutely hilarious.
When Tas leaned her forehead against Nell's, the latter’s eyes brightened. It always felt great being with Tasmin, like there was nothing wrong with the world and all was well. Just gushing about the flowers they loved so much proved this fact. ”They really are! It’s like that story Sleeping Beauty—now that the snow is all gone, everything is waking up.” She could honestly go on and on about it, and the two could talk for hours about their plants. They were flower girls, treehuggers as everyone called it—and it was great. Nell believed that one day she’d have a huge garden full of colorful flowers—especially tulips—and she’d spend the entire day out in the open air. And she’d have a table and spend afternoons talking with Tasmin, and Domino could run around eating as many flowers as he wants. ”I’m sure yours are just as pretty! I’d love to come over and see them some time,” she said, eyes glimmering. ”Aww, it stinks that you couldn’t bring Domino. Well, I bet he’s enjoying a feast at home right now.” Wrinkling her nose in disappointment, she thought about how antisocial the dog actually was. Well, not antisocial—he simply acted as a guard dog for Tazzy.
They were both moving around, trying their best to keep warm even on such a nice day. Tasmin nodded and agreed that she would follow suit, and Nell grinned goofily as she held her hands in front of her, pulling her arms in as if ready to close in on herself. But as Tasmin submerged herself, Nell decided that moving her arms out would be best and she splashed a bit as the girl popped back up, laughing in giddy excitement. ”There! You did it, Minny!” Even though she was pretty sure that like herself, Tasmin’s body didn’t adjust that quickly. Nell figured she still worried the poor girl even when she assured her that nothing was wrong. She came to the realization that she did that quite a bit. One of these days, Tasmin would have a nervous breakdown because of her. And she spoke so seriously when advising Nell not to breathe in anymore water that after a few moments of holding up a grave face, she couldn’t take it anymore and laughed. ”Right: no more inhaling of the water. Maybe I should have practiced in the bathtub beforehand!” This made her giggle again as she imagined holding her breath and pretending to dog paddle in her tiny bath.
Tasmin’s hug provided some body heat and she felt herself warm up a bit as she held the other girl’s waist, not being able to stop the giggling. And they were both giggling, bouncing around like they usually did. The two were quite dangerous in energy when put together—Academy, beware. At what Nell considered to be a compliment from her friend, her brown eyes grew larger and brightened as the sun reflected off them. ”Really? Oh my god, that’s great! I think I can really get a hold of it now! This is so exciting!” It was truly Nell’s first experience even trying to swim, so having the approval of Tasmin lifted her spirits greatly. She waited as the girl examined the lake for a moment and gave her observation. ”And it probably gets colder, too…” she murmured, considering it.
But then Tasmin gave her agreement and that was all Nell needed to guide her into neck-deep waters. ”I should learn how to tread, too.” Stepping off a little more, she began kicking her arms and legs around to stay afloat. Then, growing a bit exhausted, she ducked underwater, holding her breath and making her way back over to Tas again before pushing herself back up. ”I swam underwater!” she said cheerfully, bouncing again. ”That was my first time! It’s so much easier than dog paddling, but it’s kind of scary since I didn’t open my eyes…” Then in the excitement of finally finding something that she could do, she exclaimed, ”Tas, Tas, wanna race!? Uhh…” Nell looked around her to find a good landmark. ”Finish line is the ledge over there!” She pointed nearby to the cliffs, only a few meters off. Again, she was getting way ahead of herself, but nothing too bad could happen, right?

tasmin dedicated most of her being towards serving as a helpful to everyone. she would assist the person who detested her most if they were in a time of peril. no one could be spared by the wrath of tasmin's benevolence, the list of people that she had given a hand to at the academy had grown to be decently lengthy. whether it was helping someone finish their homework or collecting their books after a nasty spill, tasmin would aid anyone if they gave her a chance. nell was a girl who tasmin had the support to stand behind her, even when there could be an occasion that she would turn her back on her. lord, hopefully that example would never turn into a reality. "i'm only your hero if a i get a cape. a sparkly teal one!" tas gushed out, bobbing her head enthusiastically. a cape would be nice, even if she was seventeen. she didn't have to outgrow all of her childish tendencies. tasmin probably never would.
nell made the gypsy girl want to twirl around in circles until she collapsed with dizziness then switch to singing tunes from her childhood at the top of her lungs. their relationship did branch of into seriousness, tasmin valued that about the bond that formed between them. simplicity and enjoyment though mainly bloomed from the bud that had began as their friendship. plenty of laughs had shared, secrets were more scarce. 'snow white! the princess who slept through all of winter until her prince awoke her with a kiss," tasmin reiterated the story, leaning back and mimicking messy kissing noisy. she sort of resembled a fish with the way her lips puckered in. "yes though! the snow is disappearing with warm weather. which means all of the pretty green came come back." she spoke simply, her eyes lighting up brightly as she pictured fields of colorful blooms that she and domino could prance through. her legs would love to carry her through a lush field that seemed to go on endlessly, domino snapping his teeth with vigor as he loped on by her side. spring was terrific. "i try to give them as much care as switching between school and work allows. half of them are devoured anyway. you could still come over and look though!" it was disappointing but her flower eating dog still slapped a smile on her face.
being in the water with nell was a joy, really. her teeth might have been chattering while her arms started to shake, she could look over the negativeness of the choice of swimming in the frigid lake. tasmin wasn't someone that needed to be worried about, she took care of herself well enough. not many tended to fuss over her, it was her task to fret over everyone else and the foolish things that they did. nell was splashing about, tasmin giddily laughed at her obvious show of excitement. her hands lifted up then dropped down to slap against the water, creating small splashes to join with nell's. "it isn't so bad once you're whole body gets a feel for it!" her teeth chattering had subsided, goosebumps still visible on her skin. nell wouldn't have any reason to look over at her and think that she needed to feel concerned. though it hadn't been the most logical choice to go swimming tasmin was faring well, nell better off but still. "that wouldn't have been a bad idea! if you're bathtub was big enough to let you float around. i don't think so though," tasmin said, scrunching her nose at the feeling of being letdown. "we have the lake though! it's much bigger then any bathtub." the bathtub was safer.
she didn't pull away from her clinging, urging tasmin to hold on tighter to her. nell was tinier than her but body heat could still be felt rolling off of her. flicking her hair from her face tasmin buried her face into nell's wet shoulder. why? she just felt like doing it. with nell an explanation was really needed to justify everything that she did. tasmin was still giggling, her laughs encouraged by nell's laughter. "we should get domino a pool, one big enough that he can swim in. then you would be able to take lessons from the master himself," tasmin murmured into nell's shoulder, nodding her head to brush her nose against the bare skin of her shoulder. pulling away from nell, tasmin straightened herself and poked softly at her stomach. at least she wasn't shaking from the cold. "colder..." she repeated, frowning slightly.
her hand was tightly clenching nell's, suddenly regretting the agreement she mad to plunging in deeper waters. from the waist deep waters tasmin was now softly treading in the water that come up her neck. she tilted her back slightly, thinking it would give her more leverage over the water. "treading is crucial. it's the only way you stay afloat in deep waters," tasmin softly gave her commentary. nell popped underwater, causing tasmin to stiffen instantly and then glue her eyes to the place where she had sunk underwater. having her come back up and beaming with delight was a relief to tasmin. "you didn't swallow any water either!" then nell mentioned a race, rather excitedly too. she was getting carried away, success seeping to deep into her brain. "okay nelly! ready...set...start!" tamsin was off doggy paddling towards the ledge.

THEY SEEM SO VERY TOUGH (it's a lie, it's a lie) THEY SEEM SO VERY SCARED OF US Her eyes brightened at the mention of a cape, imagining Tasmin running round as a superhero. It was enough to make her almost tip over in laughter. Gathering herself, Nell held up a finger stating in a matter-of-fact voice, face completely serious in contrast to Minny’s excited, ”One sparkly teal cape will arrive at your door in five to six business days.” And that would go on Nell’s list of things to buy with her father’s money. She will be sitting at a computer and ordering that cape for Tasmin, and the girl would only find out how serious her friend had been days later when it arrives at her doorstep. But she laughed as if she was joking—and she really was. It was hard to keep her very serious, and even when she was she usually smiled, the expression a permanent fixture on her face. Especially when she was with Tasmin, who was basically an electrical outlet for her, fueling her with energy.
Tasmin exclaimed that it was Snow White, and she pushed ot her lower lip in thought, still wearing a goofy grin even with that. "Hmm...I never actually saw that movie!" She knew it to be a classic Disney film, but her repertoire as of right now was of action, superhero, and black and white movies. "We should rent it sometime and pig out on popcorn and ice cream." She was always up for a slumber party of any sort. Just spending time with Tasmin was a great prospect and sleepover was a great idea. These things were decently knew to Nell, considering she'd never had friends before coming to the Academy, though not by her own choice. She understood Tasmin’s plight in balancing school and a job and life in general. Such were the trials of life on your own, of becoming an adult. ”Well, every doggy needs a healthy diet of dry food and greenery. And that’s the kicker about being Earth—you can grow even more!” Just one of the many reasons Nell loved the element she had been born with. There was so much rebirth, and it was a concept she chose to embrace during this point in her life.
If the two dispayed any more enthusiasm, the lake may have exploded with the energy from the two. Water students would be jealous of the tidal wave effect. But how could Nell resist jumping around and acting like a fool? She nodded, not noticing how bad off Tasmin was right then, thinking that with the submerging she’d eventually grow accostumed. Nell would make sure to keep an eye out to see if she started turning blue—that’s when Nell would decide it to be time to head in and warm up with hot chocolate and—of course—food. "Unfortunately, the bathtub in my studio apartment wouldn't even fit Domino, let alone a hopeful swimmer!" Nell said her voice rising with the absurdity of it. There was no doubt in her mind that it was virtually impossible for a dog of his size to fit in that bathtub. She laughed when Tasmin commented on the fact that the lake was much safer than a bathtub. But you couldn’t drown in a bathtub, let alone Nell’s. ”Much safer. Cleaner too!” She rolled her eyes playfully, wondering just how much litter was in here. Probably not a lot, but there was also possible algae. Either way, Nell found she liked the lake and if she could get this swimming thing down, would like it even more.
It was like a mass of wet brunette hair sticking to her cheek when Tasmin rested her head on her shoulder, from both their heads and it made Nell laugh. Tasmin suggested that they get Domino a pool, and Nell thought it brilliant. ”That’s a great idea!” she cried out as if Tasmin had just discovered the cure for cancer. "We could buy a kiddy pool and use that for practice!" Nell giggled, imagining observing Domino as he swam though it would be rather difficult in such a tiny pool. Though joking, this also sounded like a good idea. If Tasmin ever suggested that swinging from a tree by a rope of licorice was a good idea, Nell would whole-heartedly agree and be the one to go out and purchase a bag of it. Though luckily Tasmin knew better than that, and thankfully Nell only sometimes took a joke seriously for shits and giggles. Like buying a cape. She just wanted to see Tasmin's face upon receiving such a thing.
Tasmin practically cut off her circulation, but Nell didn't mind at all as she guided them into deeper. She simply nodded at her suggestions, eyes busy darting around and going back to Tasmin, her attention surprisingly all on the other girl despite her excited and flighty deameanor. ”I feel like a windmill!” she said as she kiced her legs out and moved her arms. She was overdoing it a bit, considering this was her first time, but she was afraid that if she slowed down she’d sink too much. ”Or a helicopter.” And the girl's encouragement only made Nell even happier and gutsier in her actions. Unfortunately, Nell wasn't too perceptive of others, even when she was so focused in their happiness. She spent so much time worrying about people that she didn’t even think about herself or her own health. Even try to help a drunk Josh home when he was about to cut her. But she didn’t ever ask for help—only with trivial matters such as learning swim for the fun of it—and she didn’t relate her problems as she supposed most people did. Everyone wanted to feel like they could handle things on their own, it was the stubborness of human nature. And she’d be doing everything by herself since the day she was born: taking care of her sister, making sure nothing got infected in the years after leaving on her own to avoid a prison sentence. After depending on yourself for so long, it was hard to rely on anyone else no matter how much you loved them. Like sweet Tasmin who was a sister to her. Even though her happiness was always on the girl's mind, she wasn't a careful in observing as she should have been. Perhaps then she'd have picked up on the other's discomfiture. But Tasmin did so well at shielding her problems, it was difficult to pick up on anything being wrong.
Nell took off after Tasmin gave her countdown, a little late since she hadn't been expecting it. Tasmin had experience over her, and Nell was falling behind a bit, not being able to keep herself afloat well as she tried to lift her head above the water to avoid anymore inhalation. But unfortunately, she wasn't so successful. ”I have to cheat!” she cried out as she gently pushed off from the ground, before scrambling around and finding her footing in slightly shallower water, half-swimming and half-walking over to the ledge she had pointed out. ”Okay, okay, I’m disqualified!” she said, panting lightly from the effort it had taken to swim.
